Samaria Gorge (Crete)

When thinking of Crete, I believe everyone thinks of the beautiful beaches, such as Balos or Elafonissi. We wouldn’t even think that Europe’s longest gorge valley is located here!

The gorge lies on the western part of the island, running north-south for 16 km. Its starting point is on the northern side, at the Omalos plateau, from where we can descend to the seashore, to Agia Roumeli.

A stone-stepped tourist path leads down into the valley, offering an unparalleled view of the lower section.

From Agia Roumeli, you can only travel to the neighboring village by boat, and from there it’s possible to continue by bus.

Teide (Tenerife)

It’s worth traveling to the most famous member of the Canary Islands by touring around Tenerife.

In January 2019, I managed to accomplish this „tour around”, during which I climbed the volcanic Mount Teide that dominates the island, together with three companions.

We can climb the 3,718-meter Teide from a parking lot located at about 2,200 meters altitude. Actually, we can walk up on a designated path, only the altitude-related air change can cause problems.

We spent one night at the Altavista refuge hut located at 3,200 meters altitude, and started early in the morning from there to the summit. Well, we did struggle with headaches for two days.

A cable car also goes up near the summit, so we can return to the endpoint near the parking lot using it on the way down.

Wicklow Way Trail (Ireland)

Not far south from the Irish capital, Dublin, lies Wicklow Mountain, through which the tourist trail passes. It’s not called Ireland’s garden without reason.

The Wicklow Way starts from the southern part of Dublin and ends at the settlement of Clonegal. Its length is 127 km and you need to overcome 3,200 meters of elevation gain.

Ireland’s largest waterfall is also found here. The Powerscourt Waterfall is 121 meters high, and although we can only see the lower half, it’s still very beautiful.

Corfu Trail (Corfu)

Corfu’s main tourist trail leads through the island in a north-south direction for 220 km.

From the huge beaches and juniper plantations in the southern part of the island, through the olive groves in the central part, to the northern karst plateau and gorges, the Corfu Trail touches many beautiful places.

Throughout the hiking trail, a yellow diamond-shaped marking helps hikers, and it’s worth walking at least a small section of it. The Corfu Trail has become one of Greece’s most popular tourist trails.

Camí de Cavalls (Menorca)

For those who love hiking, the island is also an excellent location. You can walk around Menorca completely along the coast.

The 185 km Camí de Cavalls hiking route passes along wonderful bays and through settlements. The path is marked with red and white stripes, and helpful signs are placed in many locations.

The hiking trail is divided into 20 sections, each between 5 and 14 km long. The route’s starting point is the capital, Mahón.

On part of the route, we often encounter cyclists and even horseback riders.

Path of the Gods (Amalfi Coast)

The Amalfi Coast area south of Naples is itself a wonder due to its settlements built into the cliff face.

Here we find the tourist path called Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) between Nocelle and Bomerano, which is only 7.8 km long. But needless to say, what wonderful views we’ll enjoy if we complete this pleasant hiking trail.

You must travel very carefully, as often only a small path leads along the cliff face.

Attractions around Naples

GR20 (Corsica)

Well, this requires somewhat tougher fitness. The famous hiking trail cuts through Corsica between Calenzana and Conca, roughly in a north-south direction.

Its length is about 180 km, with a total elevation difference to overcome of about 10,000 meters. So that’s quite a lot of elevation to conquer!

GR is the abbreviation for Grande Randonnée, meaning „great hike”. It’s considered one of Europe’s most difficult but most beautiful mountain hiking routes.

The hike is basically divided into two parts: the northern part is the more difficult section, as the path is steeper and rockier here.

Trolltunga (Norway)

Saved for last is perhaps the most iconic point of northern Europe, the protruding rock seen by many.

Trolltunga is about 26 km long, which also belongs to the more difficult hiking trails. You need to overcome about 900 meters of elevation during the hike.

At the end of the hiking trail, that rock tongue awaits, which will guaranteed provide a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Just looking at the picture is enough to understand this!

Dubrovnik

The old town of Dubrovnik, called the pearl of the Adriatic Sea, is perhaps Europe’s most beautiful coastal fortress.

The 13th-century city walls, which embrace the historic core for 1940 meters, still stand in complete integrity today. The white limestone buildings and red tile roofs create a breathtaking contrast with the crystal-clear blue sea.

The city became famous not only as the filming location for Game of Thrones, but also for its rich cultural heritage: Renaissance palaces, Gothic churches, and Baroque buildings form a harmonious unity. The walk along the city walls offers the most beautiful panorama of the surrounding islands and the endless sea.

Bruges

The old town of Bruges, bearing the title „Venice of the North”, is one of the pinnacles of medieval architecture.

The 12th-15th century buildings still stand in their unchanged form along the canals. The 83-meter Belfry tower rising on the Grote Markt square is a UNESCO World Heritage site, from which there is a stunning view of the city’s red roofs.

A boat trip on the canals is the perfect way to discover the city. Bruges was the center of medieval craftsmanship, and this tradition lives on today in working lace-making workshops and chocolate shops.

Fez

One of Morocco’s most popular destinations is the world’s largest car-free old town, a thousand-year-old labyrinth.

Walking through the narrow streets and dead ends of the 9th-century medina is a real adventure tour. It’s easy to get lost among the 9000 streets and alleys, but that’s exactly the charm of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Bou Inania Madrasa is an architectural masterpiece representing the pinnacle of Moroccan art: the carved plaster, colorful mosaics, and cedar wood ceilings have enchanted visitors for centuries. The Chouara Tannery leather dyeing workshop has remained faithful to ancient techniques, where hand-dyed leathers create a colorful mosaic.

Krakow

The center of this city in southern Poland is one of Europe’s most beautiful.

The Main Market Square (Główny Rynek) is Europe’s largest medieval marketplace, where the 14th-century Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) still serves as a functioning market hall. The two asymmetrical towers of St. Mary’s Church provide a distinctive sight, while Wawel Castle, rising on the banks of the Vistula River, was the former center of the Polish kingdom.

Krakow remained almost untouched during the wars, so its authentic medieval and Renaissance buildings can still be seen in their original splendor today. The Jewish quarter, Kazimierz, is a special atmospheric part of the city, where synagogues and traditional restaurants preserve the rich cultural heritage.

Kyoto

Kyoto’s old town is the heart of Japanese culture, where traditions more than a thousand years old live on in the midst of the modern age.

The wooden houses and geisha training schools of the Gion district preserve the secrets of the classical Japanese way of life. The thousand red torii gates of Fushimi Inari Shrine create a picturesque path on the mountainside, while the wooden structure of Kiyomizu-dera Temple creates perfect harmony with nature.

A visit to this settlement near Osaka is definitely mandatory if you’re in the area!

Prague

Prague is the „city of a hundred spires” where Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture provide perfect examples.

The Charles Bridge, a 14th-century architectural masterpiece, not only spans the Vltava River but also connects the two parts of the city: the Castle District and the Old Town. The Castle complex, with St. Vitus Cathedral and the Royal Palace, is one of Europe’s most imposing castle ensembles. On the Old Town Square, the Týn Church and the Orloj, the famous astronomical clock, provide a performance every hour.

It’s one of my favorite cities: it’s worth wandering aimlessly in the old town and discovering the famous Czech beer halls! 🙂

Zanzibar City

The old town of Zanzibar City, Stone Town, is a unique blend of African, Arab, Persian, and Indian cultures.

In the 19th-century palaces, which were once the sultans’ residences, you can still feel the wealth of the golden age of the spice trade. The carved doors and balconies of the buildings rising on narrow streets are masterpieces of Omani and Indian architecture. The sultan’s bath, the Hamam, and Freddie Mercury’s house (the Queen singer’s birthplace) are special attractions.

The city’s unique position in the heart of the Indian Ocean created a special cultural blend that cannot be experienced anywhere else in the world.

Bern

For Switzerland’s most beautiful old town district, you need to travel to the capital.

In the city built in the bend of the Aare River, you’ll find 15th-century buildings, covered arcades, and colorful fountains. The Zytglogge, the 13th-century clock tower, is the city’s symbol, whose astronomical clock still amazes visitors with its precise operation.

The Münster, the late Gothic cathedral’s tower, is Switzerland’s tallest church tower, from which the snowy peaks of the Bernese Alps are visible. Bern’s old town is not just a political center, but one of the main venues of Swiss culture.

Tallinn

Its old town is the best-preserved medieval city in the Baltic region, where 13th-15th century buildings still stand in their original form.

The castle rising on Toompea Hill and the Hermann Tower watch over the city. The city walls, which are 1.9 kilometers long, are still walkable today, and from there you have an unparalleled view of the Baltic Sea and the city’s red roofs.

Tallinn’s old town is particularly magical in winter, when the snow-covered streets and medieval buildings are illuminated by the lights of the Christmas market.

Jerusalem

Jerusalem’s old town is one of humanity’s holiest places, where the sacred sites of three world religions – Judaism, Christianity, and Islam – meet.

The Old City, surrounded by 16th-century Ottoman city walls, is divided into four quarters: the Jewish, Christian, Armenian, and Muslim quarters. The Western Wall, Judaism’s holiest site, where pilgrims arrive from around the world to pray. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where according to Christian tradition Jesus’s tomb is located, is Christianity’s most important pilgrimage site.

The old town is not just a historical site, but a living spiritual center.

Tbilisi

The most beautiful old town of the Caucasus is found here, where European and Asian influences create a unique combination.

The traditional Georgian houses along the narrow streets of Stari Tbilisi (Old Town), with balconies and carved wooden decorations, represent a unique architectural style. The Sioni Cathedral and Metekhi Church are masterpieces of Georgian Orthodox architecture.

Tbilisi’s old town is interesting not only from an architectural perspective, but is also the center of Georgian gastronomy: khachapuri, khinkali, and famous Georgian wines can be tasted here in their most authentic form.

Cartagena

In the old town of Cartagena, located on the Caribbean coast in northern Colombia, Spanish colonial architecture blends with the magic of tropical atmosphere.

The 16th-century city walls still stand in complete integrity today. The colorful colonial buildings, with flower-decorated balconies and garlands, create a wonderful sight. In the Plaza de los Coches and Plaza de Armas squares, Afro-Caribbean culture and Spanish heritage meet: salsa music, the colorful clothes of fruit vendors, and the diverse world of handicraft goods.

Cartagena’s old town is important not only for its historical significance, but also because it was the inspiration for Gabriel García Márquez’s novel „One Hundred Years of Solitude”.

Dresden

Dresden is also called the Florence of the Elbe because of its wonderful architectural heritage.

Although it was severely damaged during World War II, it now shines again in its former glory thanks to reconstruction work. The Frauenkirche, a masterpiece of Saxon Baroque architecture, is the city’s symbol, whose dome can be seen from far away. The Semperoper, the world-famous opera house, and the Zwinger Palace, the Baroque residence of the Saxon electors, are the city’s cultural centers.

Many consider it one of Germany’s most beautiful cities because of its old town and atmosphere.

Ávila

Ávila’s old town is the best-preserved fortress of medieval Spain, completely surrounded by city walls built in the 11th-12th centuries.

The 2.5-kilometer-long city wall with 88 towers and 9 gates is an unparalleled monument to medieval military architecture. The granite city walls, which are 3 meters thick in some places, are still walkable today, and from there you have a stunning view of the Castilian plateau. The cathedral, which is also part of the city wall, is a unique architectural solution in medieval Europe.

It’s particularly spectacular in winter, when snow covers the granite buildings and enhances the medieval atmosphere.

Havana

The old town, La Habana Vieja, is the richest collection of Latin American colonial architecture.

In the 16th-18th century palaces around the Plaza de Armas, museums and galleries now operate, showcasing different periods of Cuban history. The Malecón, the 8-kilometer-long seaside promenade, is a favorite meeting place for Havanans and visitors.

Havana’s old town is not only architecturally significant, but is also the heart of Cuban culture, where memories of the Spanish colonial past, Afro-Caribbean traditions, and the socialist period create a unique cultural mosaic.

Plitvice Waterfalls

One of Croatia’s most famous and spectacular natural wonders, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979.

The waterfall system consists of 16 lakes and more than 90 waterfalls that formed in the Korana River’s catchment area. The lakes and waterfalls are almost transparently clear, with emerald green and turquoise blue colors. The park has well-built paths and wooden bridges, with several routes to choose from.

At the end of the tour, you can see the largest waterfall, Veliki slap. At 78 meters high, it offers a stunning sight, especially during spring and autumn when the water flow is particularly abundant.

Iguazu Falls

One of the world’s largest and most spectacular waterfall systems is located on the border of Argentina and Brazil, at the confluence of the Paraná and Iguazu rivers.

It’s not a single waterfall, but consists of more than 275 separate falls and cascades over a 2.7 km stretch, varying in height and width. Its highest and most iconic part is the Devil’s Throat (Garganta del Diablo), which is a U-shaped waterfall 82 meters high and 150 meters wide.

On the Argentine side, paths and bridges in Iguazu National Park lead directly to the top of the falls. On the Brazilian side, in Iguaçu National Park, you can admire the panorama of the waterfall system.

Chamarel

One of Mauritius’s most famous natural attractions is located near the famous Chamarel Earth.

The waterfall is about 83 meters high and cascades down a steep basalt rock wall. It is fed by the St. Denis and Viande Salée rivers, which flow through a lush tropical rainforest. Its surroundings have unique biodiversity, including rare and endemic species such as the pink pigeon.

It can be admired from several locations. The most popular viewpoints offer breathtaking panoramas from the top of the waterfall and from locations near its base.

Niagara Falls

Located on the US–Canada border, this is one of the world’s most famous waterfalls.

It consists of three main parts: the Horseshoe, American, and Bridal Veil Falls. The largest is the Horseshoe Falls, located in Canada. It is approximately 790 meters wide, 57 meters high, and carries 90% of the Niagara River’s water.

The most popular activity is the Maid of the Mist boat trip. This takes you right to the middle of the horseshoe section, where the cascading water mass provides a monumental sight.

Gocta Falls

The uniqueness of this waterfall in Peru is that it remained unknown for centuries and was only discovered recently.

Located in the Andes near the Amazon, it is surrounded by a beautiful tropical rainforest. At 771 meters high, with a free fall of 540 meters, it is the world’s tenth highest waterfall and one of South America’s highest-dropping waterfalls. Gocta falls in two stages, first a smaller drop followed by a larger one.

It remained unknown to the outside world for a long time. Although indigenous people had known about the waterfall for centuries, locals kept it hidden from tourists. In 2005, a German researcher, Stefan Ziemendorff, discovered the waterfall based on local accounts, making it known worldwide.

Goðafoss

Iceland has many waterfalls, but this one stands out even with its name: it means „waterfall of the gods”.

About 12 meters high, while not towering, its semicircular shape and powerful water flow make it extremely spectacular. Located among volcanic landscapes, the rocks rising in the background provide a unique sight.

It’s easily accessible from Route 1, which has made it one of Iceland’s most popular waterfalls.

Huangguoshu Waterfall

One of China’s most famous and largest waterfalls, also known as the „Golden Fruit Tree Waterfall”.

At 78 meters high and 101 meters wide, it is one of Asia’s widest waterfalls. Fed by the Baishui River, which carved its bed between volcanic rocks, it offers a stunning sight. One of its greatest attractions is that visitors can walk directly behind the waterfall through a natural cave.

The waterfall is an integral part of China’s cultural and literary heritage. Many poets and painters have immortalized it in their works, making it one of the inspirations for Chinese landscape painting and poetry.

Vøringsfossen

It has become a symbol of the Norwegian fjord region and attracts tens of thousands of tourists annually with its stunning beauty and location.

At 182 meters high, with a free fall of 145 meters, the waterfall plunges between the rocks of Måbødalen Valley, famous for its steep canyons and scenic views.

A steel bridge spans above the waterfall, offering excellent views of the water and landscape. Marked walking paths also lead to various points of the waterfall, allowing closer observation.

Kegon Falls

Located near Nikko city in Japan, it is ranked among the country’s „three most beautiful waterfalls”.

Created by the overflow of Lake Chuzenji, it cascades down a steep basalt wall. The 97-meter-high waterfall offers amazing views, and a special elevator takes visitors to its base for an even more beautiful perspective.

It has been an inspiration for Japanese art and poetry for centuries. Its name, „Kegon” is connected to Buddhist teachings.

Yosemite Falls

It’s not only an iconic attraction of Yosemite National Park but also of the USA.

At 739 meters high, it is divided into three sections. Upper Yosemite Falls is 435 meters high, the largest section. The middle section consists of several smaller falls, totaling 206 meters. Lower Yosemite Falls is 98 meters high and easily accessible to visitors.

Yosemite Falls is fed by snowmelt from the Sierra Nevada mountains. The water flow is seasonal: most intense during spring snowmelt, while by late summer the waterfall might completely dry up.

Ban Gioc-Detian Falls

Located on the Vietnam-China border, this attraction is the world’s fourth-largest border waterfall.

Its total width reaches 200 meters and consists of multiple cascading sections. The waterfall is surrounded by lush green vegetation, rice fields, and fairy-tale limestone mountains. Tourists can approach it by bamboo rafts, which provides a unique experience.

During the rainy season (May to September), the waterfall is most spectacular when the water flow significantly increases.

Victoria Falls

One of the world’s largest waterfalls forms the natural border between Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Its dimensions are impressive: total height of 108 meters, width of 1,708 meters, making it one of the world’s widest continuous waterfalls. It’s unique in that it forms a complete river cascade that dumps an enormous amount of water into a narrow gorge.

It was discovered for the Western world in 1855 by Scottish explorer David Livingstone, who named it after British Queen Victoria.

Historic District of Quebec

One of Canada’s most significant historical areas preserves the memories of the French colonial era.

The city, founded in the early 17th century, is unique as it’s the only one on the continent with intact preserved walls. UNESCO added it to the World Heritage List in 1985, as Quebec is a unique example of French colonial urban planning and European colonization in North America.

The city is famous for its distinctive structure between Upper Town and Lower Town, and the iconic Château Frontenac hotel that dominates the city’s skyline. Other important attractions include Place Royale, the Citadel, and the picturesque cobblestone streets that have preserved their historical atmosphere.

Viñales Valley

Located in western Cuba’s Pinar del Río province, it’s known as one of the world’s most beautiful agricultural-cultural landscapes.

The valley is dotted with dramatic limestone formations called mogotes and fertile tobacco plantations. The region is the center of traditional tobacco cultivation, which provides the raw material for famous Cuban cigars.

UNESCO added it to the World Heritage List in 1999, as the valley has been using traditional agricultural methods for centuries that form an organic unity with the environment. Additionally, the area is rich in geological, paleontological, and archaeological values.

One of the USA’s most recognizable symbols is located on Liberty Island in New York.

The statue was gifted to the American people by France in 1886 for the centennial of American independence, symbolizing liberty, democracy, and the struggle against oppression.

The impressive 93-meter-tall copper statue was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, while Gustave Eiffel’s engineering work ensured the stability of the internal structure. UNESCO added it to the World Heritage List in 1984, as the statue is one of the world’s most significant cultural monuments.

One of the statue’s most recognizable elements is the torch holding the flame, symbolizing hope. The site offers breathtaking views of Manhattan.

Historic Center of Mexico City and Xochimilco

Two outstanding cultural and historical sites in Mexico’s capital.

The historic center was built on the site of the former Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan. It’s filled with architectural treasures from the colonial period, such as the Metropolitan Cathedral and the archaeological remains of Templo Mayor.

Xochimilco, in southern Mexico City, is famous for its canal network and floating gardens (chinampas), which preserve the heritage of Aztec agricultural innovation.

UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1987, as the two areas showcase a unique blend of Aztec civilization, Spanish colonial architecture, and urban development.

Colonial City of Santo Domingo

Located in the Dominican Republic’s capital, the Colonial City of Santo Domingo is the New World’s first European settlement, founded in 1498. It was the first Spanish colonial center in the Americas and home to the first cathedral, fortress, and government palace.

UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1988, as the city’s layout and buildings are exceptional examples of colonial urban planning that other American cities later followed. The Calle Las Damas (Ladies’ Street) and the Alcázar de Colón, Diego Columbus’s former residence, are among the city’s most famous attractions.

Tikal National Park

This Guatemalan park is one of the most important archaeological sites of the Maya civilization and one of the world’s oldest and largest cities.

The ancient city’s remains are located in the middle of dense rainforest, impressively showcasing Maya culture’s architecture, art, and religious life. It was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1979, as it uniquely combines cultural and natural heritage. The park has rich biodiversity and is home to numerous rare plant and animal species.

Tikal’s famous structures include the impressive Jaguar Temple and the Temple of the Two-Headed Snake, offering wonderful views of the jungle.

Yellowstone National Park

The United States’ and the world’s first national park, which is one of the most well-known.

Established in 1872, it spans across Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho states. The park is famous for its stunning natural phenomena, particularly its geothermal activity, such as one of the world’s most famous geysers, Old Faithful, and the scenic Grand Prismatic Spring hot spring.

Honduras‘ Copán was one of the ancient Maya civilization’s most important cultural and political centers.

Copán’s most notable attractions include the Hieroglyphic Stairway, which contains the longest known text of Maya history. Also notable is the Great Acropolis, which encompasses elite residential and sacred sites.

Historically, it’s important because many escaped slaves used this area in the 18th-19th centuries to hide from pursuing authorities. The rocks, caves, and hidden bays at the top of the mountain and surrounding area provided them with ideal shelter.

Robben Island

Located in South Africa, about 7 km off the coast of Cape Town in the Atlantic Ocean.

It’s one of the world’s most famous political and historical sites. Over centuries, it served various purposes, including as a prison, military base, and leper colony. During apartheid, the island became a notorious prison where political prisoners were held, including Nelson Mandela, who spent 18 years here.

The island now operates as a museum and is an important site for conveying knowledge about apartheid history and the struggle for freedom and equality.

Archaeological Site of Carthage

Near Tunisia’s capital, Tunis, you can see the remains of one of antiquity’s most significant cities.

Founded by the Phoenicians around 814 BCE, it became a significant power center, especially during the Punic Wars when it became Rome’s greatest rival. It was destroyed in 146 BCE during the Third Punic War when the Romans conquered and demolished the city. It was later rebuilt and became one of Roman Africa’s most important cities.

The Great Wall of China

China’s symbol is one of the world’s most famous architectural wonders.

Its construction took place over more than two thousand years, from the 7th century BC until the Ming Dynasty. One of Cambodia’s most significant historical and cultural sites served as the center of the Khmer Empire.

The park covers more than 400 square kilometers and contains numerous temples, palaces, reservoirs, and other architectural wonders. It was once the center of one of Southeast Asia’s most developed cities. The site is unique in that it combines elements of Hinduism and Buddhism, as the empire’s religious center alternated between the two belief systems.

Petra

Lumbini

The small town in southern Nepal is a sacred site of Buddhism. According to tradition, this is where Gautama Siddhartha, or Buddha, was born in 623 BC.

The central site is the Maya Devi Temple, which commemorates Buddha’s mother, Maya Devi. The Ashoka Pillar marks Buddha’s exact birthplace. The artifact from 249 BC is one of the most important memorials of the Mauryan Empire.

Its uniqueness also lies in its diversity: many countries, including China, Japan, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka, have built their own monasteries and monuments here.

Built during the late Neolithic and Bronze Age, approximately 3000-2000 BC. The stacked stone blocks (megaliths) and surrounding ditch systems reflect engineering and architectural knowledge that was ahead of its time in early human development.

It was most likely built for ritual purposes and may have been used for religious ceremonies or community events for thousands of years.

Alhambra, Generalife and Albayzín

The entire Spanish city of Granada is a wonderful site. The Andalusian city is an outstanding example of the meeting of Islamic and Christian cultures, medieval architecture, and impressive artistic creations integrated into the landscape.

The Alhambra is a Moorish fortress and palace complex built by the last Islamic dynasty, the Nasrids, in the 13th and 14th centuries. The palaces’ beautiful geometric decorations, delicate carved plasterwork, wonderful tile work, and impressive gardening elements are the finest examples of Islamic art and architecture.

The Generalife is the Alhambra’s summer palace. The building and its gardens are masterpieces of Moorish garden art. The Albayzín is Granada’s historic quarter. This neighborhood has preserved its medieval Islamic urban structure, with narrow, winding streets, white-washed houses, and buildings with interior courtyards.

Palace and Park of Versailles

One of France’s most famous cultural and historical monuments was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.

This architectural and garden art creation is a symbol of French absolutism and embodies 17th and 18th-century European royal splendor and power. The palace became the center of the French monarchy under Louis XIV, the „Sun King”.

Its park was designed by André Le Nôtre and is considered one of the masterpieces of French classical garden art. The symmetrical layout, carefully trimmed hedges, fountains, statues, and geometric flower beds make the vast park magnificent.

It’s one of the world’s most beautiful castles, which is also evident in the fact that many European kings had Versailles-style palaces built. Examples include Schönbrunn in Vienna, Sanssouci in Potsdam, or the Esterházy Castle in Fertőd.

Historic Center of Edinburgh

Encompassing Scotland’s capital’s Old Town and New Town, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995.

The iconic Edinburgh Castle stands at the center of the Old Town, rising on a volcanic rock. The castle is significant both strategically and historically, as it was the residence and defensive center of Scotland’s rulers.

The Royal Mile, starting from the castle, is the city’s most famous street. It connects the castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the British royal family’s official Scottish residence. Additionally, there are numerous historical buildings and museums.

Edinburgh is one of my favorite cities. Although the main attractions can be visited in one day, it has a special atmosphere. Together with Glasgow, it makes for an excellent few days’ trip.

This is the only World Heritage site that enjoys World Heritage status in its entirety, as its cultural, religious, and historical significance extends far beyond its borders.

Its main building is St. Peter’s Basilica, considered one of the world’s largest and most important Christian churches. This architectural masterpiece is credited to Michelangelo, Bramante, and Bernini.

Another significant part is the Sistine Chapel. Through Michelangelo’s ceiling frescoes and the famous „Last Judgment” painting, it’s one of the world’s most famous artistic treasures. This is where papal conclaves are held.

Historic Center of Salzburg

The city’s Baroque architecture, rich musical heritage, and picturesque setting elevate it among the world’s most valuable historical sites.

The Hohensalzburg Fortress, towering over the city, is one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval fortifications. Salzburg’s architectural character is defined by 17th and 18th-century Baroque style, visible on many churches and palaces: the Mirabell Palace is an excellent example of the latter.

And of course, we can’t leave out Mozart! The city still preserves the memory of the genius composer: both his birthplace and residence operate as museums.

Old Town of Dubrovnik

Located in southern Croatia, the city is also known as the „Pearl of the Adriatic”, with one of the world’s most beautiful centers.

In the Middle Ages, Dubrovnik was an important trading center and independent city-state, the center of the Republic of Ragusa. Many historical buildings, including the Rector’s Palace, Sponza Palace, and Franciscan Monastery, indicate medieval wealth.

The city walls, built between the 13th and 16th centuries and nearly two kilometers long, are Dubrovnik’s most iconic feature. Walking along the walls offers wonderful views of the Old Town, sea, and mountains.

It was added to the World Heritage List in 1978 as one of the outstanding sites of Polish and European history and culture.

Kraków was Poland’s capital for centuries and the center of royal court, religious, and academic life. The city’s historical part includes the Old Town, Wawel Hill, and the Kazimierz quarter.

The Old Town’s center is the huge Main Square, one of Europe’s largest medieval squares. The square features the famous Cloth Hall, St. Mary’s Basilica, and the Town Hall Tower. Not far away is Wawel Hill and the royal castle, offering beautiful views of the Vistula River.

The Belgian town is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe.

It boasts numerous architectural masterpieces, including the famous Belfort bell tower, the Basilica of the Holy Blood, and the Beguinage (Begijnhof). Additionally, its artistic heritage is significant, as reflected in its numerous museums and galleries.

Bruges is often called the „Venice of the North” due to its canal system, which not only aided the city’s transportation but is also a defining part of its cityscape. Boat trips allow us to see the most important buildings.

Auschwitz Concentration Camp

I don’t think this needs much introduction. The former extermination camp near Krakow is one of the world’s most haunting sites.

The place honors the memory of the victims by preserving the physical evidence of the concentration camps’ horrors. The remains of former barracks, gas chambers, and crematoria demonstrate the terrible atrocities that occurred here during World War II.

Rila Monastery

Bulgaria’s largest and most significant Orthodox monastery was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983.

The monastery was founded in the 10th century by St. John, one of the most well-known saints of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. The building was a center of Bulgarian Christianity and Balkan Orthodoxy, particularly during the Middle Ages and the Bulgarian National Revival period.

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin at the monastery’s center, famous for its beautiful frescoes, is a stunning example of Orthodox art. The wooden Rila Tower and the monastery’s colorful, vaulted courtyard are also unique.

Mont-Saint-Michel

The abbey in Normandy, France, stands out primarily due to its location.

Built on a rocky outcrop, it is a stunning example of Gothic architecture. The abbey was consecrated to the Archangel Michael, whose appearance allegedly inspired its construction. It has been a famous pilgrimage site since the Middle Ages.

Its immediate surroundings are also a unique natural site, characterized by one of the world’s largest tidal ranges. The dynamics of the tides constantly change the landscape, sometimes cutting the island off from the mainland, other times making it accessible by foot.

One of Italy’s cultural and artistic centers is known as the birthplace of the Renaissance.

Florence played a key role in launching the European Renaissance in the 14th and 15th centuries. The city was home to famous artists, scientists, and architects such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Dante, and Botticelli.

Its city center contains numerous world-famous buildings, including the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral (with Brunelleschi’s famous dome), Giotto’s Bell Tower, and the Basilica of Santa Croce. Its most beautiful bridge, the Ponte Vecchio, is world-renowned.

Art is preserved in two famous museums: the Uffizi Gallery and the Accademia Gallery. Their collections include some of the world’s most famous artworks, including Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and Michelangelo’s David.

Þingvellir National Park

One of Iceland’s most famous and important historical, cultural, and natural sites has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2004.

The park’s special significance lies in it being the founding site of the Icelandic parliament. The Alþingi was established here in 930, where people gathered annually for legislation, justice, and important political decisions.

The park is one of the world’s most observable tectonic boundaries, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates drift apart by a few millimeters each year. The Almannagjá gorge is one of the most spectacular examples of the fault line between the tectonic plates.

One of Spain’s most important historical cities was the capital of the Spanish kingdom in the Middle Ages.

This diversity is visible in the buildings, where Mudéjar, Gothic, and Renaissance styles blend.

Its most famous building is the cathedral, one of Spain’s most impressive Gothic cathedrals. Another defining feature of the city’s skyline is the Alcázar fortress, located at the highest point of the old town.

In terms of art, its famous resident El Greco, one of the greatest painters of the Spanish Renaissance, must be mentioned. Many of his works can still be viewed in the city, such as The Burial of Count Orgaz in the Church of Santo Tomé.

The French city famous for its wines was officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007 as the „Port of the Moon”.

Its center is one of the best-preserved classical cities in Europe. The elegant boulevards, impressive squares, and harmonious buildings, such as the Place de la Bourse (Stock Exchange Square) or the Grand Théâtre, are outstanding examples of 18th-century urban planning.

Bordeaux is a symbol of French winemaking and has played a central role in wine culture development for centuries. Not surprisingly, there is a famous wine museum (Cité du Vin) in the city.

This site is particularly outstanding as one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities.

Tallinn was an important trading center during the Hanseatic League, and its wealth is still reflected in its buildings today. The city walls, towers, and gates, such as the famous Viru Gate, were parts of the medieval city’s defense system that still stand today.

The Old Town’s architecture includes Gothic, Romanesque, and Renaissance styles. St. Olaf’s Church and Toompea Castle are among the city’s most iconic buildings. Medieval craftsmen’s houses and workshops can still be seen today, and traditional techniques are still practiced in many places.

Budapest

We can’t leave out our capital city, where the Banks of the Danube, the Buda Castle Quarter, and Andrássy Avenue with its historical surroundings are on the list.

The Castle Quarter and the Danube define Budapest’s skyline. It’s one of the city’s most visited areas, particularly thanks to its well-preserved heritage. It includes Buda Castle, the Fisherman’s Bastion, Matthias Church, the National Széchényi Library, and the Sándor Palace, the residence of the President of Hungary.

Andrássy Avenue, along with the Millennium Underground Railway beneath it and Heroes’ Square at its end, was added to the list together.

Plitvice Lakes National Park

One of Croatia’s most famous natural treasures is among the world’s most beautiful waterfalls.

It consists of 16 lakes connected by natural travertine dam systems. The lakes are arranged in a terraced formation at different levels. The park contains numerous waterfalls, including the famous Great Waterfall (Veliki slap), which is the highest at 78 meters.

I can confirm that it deserves its place on the list. It takes several hours to walk through the entire area, and you can see increasingly beautiful waterfalls.

Old City of Bern

The center of Switzerland’s capital has been preserved in a special condition, reflecting medieval urban planning practices.

Founded in 1191, the city’s structure has barely changed since medieval times. Bern’s Old City is made special by its arcades (approximately 6 km in length), unique sandstone buildings, and colorful fountains.

The city’s most outstanding architectural creation is the Cathedral of St. Vincent, Switzerland’s largest Gothic church. Another significant monument is the Zytglogge or Clock Tower. It was once part of the city gate, and its 15th-century astronomical clock still works today.

Meteora Monasteries

One of Greece’s most famous historical and religious sites has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1988.

The word „meteora” means „suspended in air”, which perfectly describes these monasteries’ unique location. The buildings stand on steep sandstone rock peaks 300-600 meters high, shaped by natural erosion over millions of years.

Monastery construction began in the 14th century, with only six operating today. Their construction was an extraordinary achievement at the time: building materials were transported to the rock peaks using rope nets and pulleys.

Suomenlinna Fortress

A massive maritime fortress system in Helsinki, added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991.

The fortress was built by the Swedes in the 18th century, and due to its strategic importance, it played a key role in the military history of the Nordic region for a long time. The goal was to protect Sweden’s eastern borders against Russian expansion.

Today, Suomenlinna is a popular tourist destination, cultural center, and residential area where more than 800 people live. The fortress can be reached by boat from Helsinki, and it features numerous museums, restaurants, and green spaces, making it one of the most attractive places in the capital.

The most beautiful churches in the world

Sagrada Família (Barcelona)

For me, this is the most beautiful church in the world. It’s a must-see attraction from the inside for anyone visiting Barcelona!

It was designed by the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, who played a role in many of the city’s buildings. Construction began in 1882 and is progressing extremely slowly due to the complexity of the plans. Work is still ongoing, and when completed, it will be the largest basilica in the world.

Its length from the apse to the northern end is 90 meters and it’s 45 meters wide. Its interior height reaches 75 meters. Features of several styles can be found. The architects before Gaudí designed a neo-Catalan building, which is a type of neo-Gothic style. Gaudí himself further developed it in the spirit of modernism.

St. Peter’s Basilica (Vatican)

The largest and most significant church of the Roman Catholic Church, and also the seat of the papacy. The basilica is one of the holiest sites in Christianity and attracts millions of pilgrims and tourists annually.

The original church was built around 324 during the reign of Emperor Constantine I, above the tomb of Saint Peter the Apostle. Construction of the current basilica began in 1506 under Pope Julius II and was completed in 1626 under Pope Urban VIII. Many famous Renaissance and Baroque artists and architects participated in the construction, including Bramante, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Bernini.

St. Peter’s Square is located in front of the basilica, designed by Bernini. The square is surrounded by two semicircular colonnades. Inside, there are numerous artistic creations, including Michelangelo’s Pietà.

Seville Cathedral

One of Spain’s most significant and impressive buildings, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

It is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and the third-largest church in the Christian world. The 15th-century cathedral was built on the site of a former Moorish mosque, some elements of which were incorporated into the new structure.

Its outstanding feature is the 104-meter-high Giralda tower. The cathedral’s bell tower was originally the minaret of the Moorish mosque. On top of it is a 4-meter-high bronze statue, the „Giraldillo”.

St. Paul’s Cathedral (London)

The cathedral of the Anglican Diocese of London and an important symbol of English national identity.

The current cathedral is the fifth on the site; its predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. Construction of the new one began in 1675 based on Sir Christopher Wren’s designs and was completed in 1711.

The cathedral’s most famous feature is the dome. Inside, 30 meters high, is the Whispering Gallery. It’s famous for its special acoustics: a whisper along the wall can be clearly heard on the opposite side of the gallery.

Many famous personalities rest in the crypt, including Admiral Nelson, the Duke of Wellington, and Sir Christopher Wren.

Wat Arun (Bangkok)

One of Bangkok’s most iconic and beautiful Buddhist temples is located on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River, opposite the Royal Palace.

Its name means „Temple of Dawn”, referring to the sight of the first rays of the rising sun glinting off the temple’s decorations. Much of these come from Chinese porcelain plates and cups.

The central pagoda is a Khmer-style tower that symbolizes Mount Meru in Hindu-Buddhist cosmology. At its base are statues depicting mythological creatures and demons. We can climb to different levels of the tower via a steep staircase, offering a wonderful view.

Milan Cathedral

The symbol of Milan is one of the masterpieces of Italian Gothic architecture.

Its construction lasted nearly six centuries, from 1386 until the end of the 19th century. The cathedral is the third-largest Catholic church in the world. From its roof, there’s a beautiful view of the city and the Alps on clear days.

Its exterior is decorated with more than 3,400 statues depicting saints, biblical figures, and mythological creatures. The roof of the church is crowned by 135 stone spires, the highest of which is the 108.5-meter main tower, topped by the famous „Madonnina” statue.

Hagia Sophia (Istanbul)

One of the most outstanding works of Turkish architecture and a symbol of Istanbul.

Originally built as a Christian church in 537 during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, it was the largest church in the world for nearly a thousand years. Under Turkish rule, it was a mosque, then a museum, and since 2020, it has been functioning as a mosque again.

Its two distinctive features are the dome and the minarets. The nearly 56-meter-high dome has 40 windows. The mosque has four minarets that were added to the building during Ottoman rule. Their height and style differ slightly, reflecting the different times of their construction.

Notre-Dame (Paris)

One of the most well-known among the numerous iconic buildings of the French capital.

The cathedral is an outstanding example of French Gothic architecture, particularly famous for its western facade, which features two monumental towers, rich sculptural decoration, and a large rose window.

Many people don’t know that Notre-Dame’s organ is a huge musical treasure. Many consider Notre-Dame’s 113-register, five-manual grand organ to be one of the best instruments in the world.

The reconstruction of the temple, which was severely damaged in the 2019 fire, is fortunately nearing its end, so it will soon reopen its doors to visitors.

Golden Temple (India)

Officially named Harmandir Sahib, the holiest site of the Sikh religion is located in the Indian city of Amritsar.

It got its name from its upper level covered in gold, which was donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the 19th century. The temple is located in the middle of an artificial lake, the Amrit Sarovar, accessed by a long marble bridge. The building’s four entrances symbolize that it’s open to people of all castes, religions, and nationalities.

Part of the complex is a huge community kitchen, the Langar, where free food is served daily to up to 100,000 pilgrims and visitors.

Cologne Cathedral

The construction of this Gothic cathedral lasted for several centuries, from 1248 to 1880. This resulted in a monumental church.

It’s Germany’s largest Gothic church and the world’s third-tallest cathedral, with twin towers reaching 157 meters high. Its interior is also impressive: it has five naves, and the vault of the main nave is 43 meters high.

The cathedral houses numerous artistic treasures, including the Shrine of the Three Kings, one of the most significant goldsmith works of the Middle Ages. The building has 10,000 square meters of stained glass windows, many of which are original, medieval creations. The western facade of the cathedral is particularly impressive, with its richly decorated portals and rose window.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral (New York)

The Big Apple isn’t famous for its churches, but this one definitely stands out!

Located in the heart of Manhattan on Fifth Avenue, opposite the Rockefeller Center. The cathedral is impressive in its size: 123 meters long, 53 meters wide, and the towers reach 100 meters high. The building is made of white marble, creating a contrast with the surrounding skyscrapers.

The building contains 21 altars and 19 bells and can accommodate 2,200 people. It has been the site of many significant events, including the funeral service for President Kennedy’s brother, Robert F. Kennedy, in 1968.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque (Abu Dhabi)

The most impressive building in the capital of the United Arab Emirates is named after the country’s first president, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

The mosque is built of white Greek and Macedonian marble, decorated with gold, semi-precious stones, crystals, and ceramics. The main building is crowned by 82 domes, the largest of which is 85 meters high and 32.8 meters in diameter. It can accommodate up to 40,000 worshippers at once.

The mosque’s courtyard is lined with 1,000 columns, each decorated with intricate floral mosaic patterns. Inside the building is the world’s largest hand-woven carpet, covering an area of 5,700 square meters and weighing 47 tons. A huge chandelier hangs in the main prayer hall, weighing 12 tons and decorated with Swarovski crystals.

Salt Lake Temple (Salt Lake City)

One of the most important buildings of the Mormon Church is located in the capital of Utah.

The temple was built in Neo-Romanesque style, with granite walls up to 2.7 meters thick. The building is 68 meters high and has six towers, the tallest of which is 64 meters, topped with a gilded statue of the Angel Moroni.

Its peculiarity is that – unlike many other religious buildings – only members of the Mormon Church who meet certain church requirements can enter. Nevertheless, it’s definitely worth seeing as it’s an impressive sight from the outside as well.

Senso-ji Temple (Tokyo)

One of the oldest and most famous Buddhist temples, which legend says was founded in 628.

The complex consists of several buildings, including the main hall, a five-story pagoda, and numerous smaller shrines. The main hall houses the temple’s holiest object, the Kannon statue, which is kept hidden from public view.

It’s the site of numerous festivals and celebrations, including the famous Sanja Matsuri in May. The temple is particularly spectacular in spring when the cherry trees are in bloom, and at night when the buildings are illuminated.

The most beautiful castles in Scotland

Dunrobin Castle

Located north of Inverness on the east coast, in Golspie.

Its first mention dates back to 1401 as the residence of the Earls of Sutherland. Over the centuries, it has been expanded and remodeled multiple times. Its current L-shaped complex emerged in the 17th century.

The magnificent French garden, modeled after Versailles, was created in the mid-19th century by Charles Barry, the architect of the Westminster Parliament.

Drummond Castle

The castle is most famous for its garden, known as „the best example of terraced gardens in Scotland”. It is situated on a part of the rocky ridge known as Gask Ridge.

The castle consists of a tower house built at the end of the 15th century and a villa built in the 17th century, both of which were remodeled in Victorian times.

The garden was created in 1630 and rebuilt in the 19th century.

Balmoral Castle

Located along the River Dee, in the area known as Royal Deeside, within Cairngorms National Park.

The estate was purchased in 1852 by Queen Victoria and her consort, Prince Albert, and remains the favorite summer residence of the royal family to this day.

The prince immediately began planning the expansion of the castle and the construction of a new, larger castle suitable for the royal family. The new castle, built about 100 meters from the old one, was completed in 1856. The old building was then demolished.

Today, it is open to visitors continuously from April to July, until the beginning of the queen’s annual visit. Of the interior spaces, only the ballroom is open to the public.

Glamis Castle

One of the easternmost castles in Scotland. This building is the residence of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne.

The castle has been the property of the Lyon clan since the 14th century, but it only gained its current form in the 17th century. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, the mother of Queen Elizabeth II, spent her childhood here.

The castle is known as one of the most haunted places in the world. It is said to contain a walled-in monster within its walls. According to legend, it was a deformed child of the residing family, who was kept confined within the castle walls all his life and then walled in after death.

Culzean Castle

Near the town of Maybole, on Scotland’s Ayrshire coast, the castle is built atop a cliff. Previously inhabited by Scottish nobles, the Earls of Ailsa from the Kennedy clan.

The L-shaped Culzean Castle was built at the end of the 18th century for David Kennedy, the 10th Earl of Cassilis. It also has a beautiful 500-hectare park.

Its main attraction is the oval staircase with a glass roof in the center of the building and the semi-circular, sea-facing salon that opens from it.

One of its rooms was made available to General Dwight Eisenhower during World War II, which now houses an exhibition about his life.

The castle’s image adorns the back of the five-pound note.

Inveraray Castle

Located in western Scotland on the shores of Loch Fyne, it has been owned since the 17th century by the Duke of Argyll, head of the Campbell clan. It is also referred to as one of Scotland’s most beautiful castles.

There has been a ducal residence on the site since the 15th century, but the current baroque-gothic castle was built in the 17th century and reached its final form at the end of the 19th century.

Its most famous part is the armory, which is 21 meters high. The displayed weapons showcase the history of Scotland and the Campbell clan.

Kilchurn Castle

Located not far north of Inveraray Castle, at the northern tip of Loch Awe, it is a popular photography site due to its location and surroundings.

First built in the mid-15th century by the Campbell clan, who expanded the castle and their domain over the next 150 years. It was then transformed into a fortress, and by the end of the 1700s, the site was abandoned.

Dunvegan Castle

Scotland’s oldest continuously inhabited castle, which is the ancestral home of the famous MacLeods.

One of its features is the Fairy Flag, an ancient family heirloom. When unfurled, it helps the family thrice: its magic repels enemies, staves off famine, and brings fertility.

The 14th-century castle has exhibitions, and outside, a large garden offers a beautiful view of the sea, from where seal-watching trips are also organized.

Kelburn Castle

Located 35 km west of Glasgow near the seaside town of Fairlie, this colorful castle has been owned by the Boyle family since its construction in the 18th century.

The reason I say colorful is that in 2007, the owner decided to paint the walls in colors at the suggestion of his children. Various patterns and fairy-tale figures were thus painted on the walls.

Unfortunately, the office dealing with monuments only temporarily authorized this, so it’s uncertain how long the castle can be seen in this form.

Stirling Castle

Located in the city of Stirling, this castle is one of the largest and most architecturally and historically significant in Scotland.

The castle’s foundation was built in the 14th century, but the main buildings are from the 15th and 16th centuries. Several Scottish kings and queens were crowned within its walls.

In the southern part of the upper courtyard is the palace block. Its construction was started by James IV but is actually associated with James V. It features both Renaissance and late Gothic architecture. It is considered one of the most impressive Scottish buildings.

Eilean Donan Castle

The castle is built on an island in Loch Duich in the western part of the Scottish Highlands.

It serves as the headquarters of the Scottish MacRae clan. The name literally means „Island of Donan” and is named after a 6th-century hermit.

The castle was built in 1220 by King Alexander II of Scotland and was completely destroyed by an English fleet in 1719. It was rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century.

Today, the castle houses a museum. One of its interesting features is that its former kitchen is set up with characteristic sounds to create the impression that food is being prepared for the lord.

The castle can only be approached on foot, via a stone bridge.

Urquhart Castle

The castle is located next to Loch Ness, along the A82 main road, between Fort William and Inverness.

It was one of medieval Scotland’s largest strongholds. Unfortunately, it is quite dilapidated, but still impressive as it majestically sprawls atop a hill.

The walled part of the castle resembles a horizontal figure eight, oriented northeast to southwest. Although no upper level remains intact, the positions of the supporting beams can be seen in the stone walls, illustrating the construction methods of the time.

The visitor center features an exhibition about the castle’s history, including several medieval relics.

Dunnottar Castle

A ruined, medieval fortress situated on a steep, rocky promontory on the northeastern coastline of Scotland.

While the current castle ruins date back to the 15th and 16th centuries, a fortification existed here in the early medieval period. The ruins rise about 50 meters above sea level.

Dunnottar played a significant strategic role in Scottish history from the Middle Ages until the Enlightenment. Its location allowed for monitoring ships heading towards North Scotland and controlling land traffic.

The castle can be accessed via two footpaths. One is an 800-meter, partially steep footpath, equipped with some newly built stairs, connecting it to a car park along the coastal road (which joins the A92 main road). The other is a 3-kilometer tourist path originating from behind the harbor in Stonehaven, heading south along the cliff top to the castle. This path is quite narrow and steep in places but offers beautiful sea views.

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle, an ancient fortress, sits atop a volcanic rock peak. It’s located at the upper end of the famous Royal Mile street in the western part of Edinburgh’s old town.

A royal castle has stood here since the 12th century, participating in numerous historical conflicts as one of the most important strongholds of the Kingdom of Scotland.

Most of the current buildings date from after the 16th century, with the notable exception of St. Margaret’s Chapel. This is Edinburgh’s oldest surviving building, constructed in the early 12th century.

Other notable structures include the royal palace and the 15th-century Great Hall. The castle also houses the Scottish National War Memorial and the National War Museum of Scotland.

It is the annual venue for the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a military band festival that has become a symbol of Edinburgh and indeed all of Scotland.
