It is one of the most popular destinations in the region, along with Seychelles and Mauritius.

Zanzibar City

The island’s capital is on the western side, where boats from Tanzania’s mainland arrive.

Its famous old town, Stone Town, located along the coast, showcases ancient architecture and masterpieces. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The most notable building is the Old Fort, built by the Arabs in the early 18th century. Inside, there are exhibitions, a café, and a gift shop.

Opposite the fort is Forodhani Gardens, a popular park in the district. While not very large, it offers a variety of local delicacies at many food stalls.

The House of Wonders was the palace of the Sultans of Zanzibar and is now home to the Art Museum.

Many don’t know, but Freddie Mercury was born in Zanzibar. His memory is preserved at the Freddy Mercury Museum in Stone Town, where numerous photos, videos, and personal items are displayed.

Among religious buildings, the Anglican Cathedral is the most beautiful. The interior of the church, especially the altar, is worth admiring.

Zanzibar was one of the region’s largest slave trading centers. This history is commemorated at the Slave Chambers and the adjacent building. Underground slave chambers can also be found.
