Orly Airport

Metro 14

The metro line runs north-south through Parisopn, providing direct access to the city centre.

A separate ticket is required (Ticket aéroport Orly), public transport tickets and passes are not valid!

Orlyval and RER B

The Orlyval metro runs to Anthony station, where you can change to the RER B (which takes you directly to the city centre).

Public transport tickets and season tickets are not valid on the Orlyval line!

Bus and RER C

At the airport, follow the „Paris by train” sign to reach a bus called Go C Paris, which takes you to the Pont de Rungis RER station. From there, the RER C train takes you to the city center, connecting to several metro stops.

The RER ticket is valid for metro transfers within the metro area. Public transportation tickets and passes are not valid!

Orlybus

The bus departs from the airport’s south gate H and west gate D.

It runs to Denfert-Rochereau metro station, where there are transfer options to metro lines 4 and 6. Travel time 25-30 minutes.

Take the T7 tram to Vilejuif-Louis Aragon metro station, where you can transfer to metro line 7. Single ticket is required.

Beauvais Airport

Bus A02 connects to Paris Saint-Denis University station, where you can transfer to metro line 13.

Paris public transportation

Paris transportation is based on the metro and RER suburban trains, which densely cover the city and its immediate surroundings.

Paris is divided into five zones (city center is zone 1). Almost all attractions are within zone 1.

Transportation is free for children under 4 years old!

On mobile, you can buy tickets online in the Bonjour RATP app.

Single ticket (T+)

Valid within the Île-de-France region on buses, trams, metro, and the Montmartre funicular, regardless of zones.

For RER, it’s only valid within zone 1.

The single-ticket system is a bit complicated because transfers are allowed, but not always! I’ll try to explain it simply:

• On metro, RER, from metro to RER, and from RER to metro, it’s valid for unlimited transfers within 90 minutes;
• From tram to tram, tram to bus, bus to bus, and bus to tram, it’s valid for unlimited transfers within 90 minutes;
• Transfers from bus/tram to metro/RER and vice versa are not possible!
• Transfers are not possible on night buses!

Day Pass (Navigo Jour)

Available only as one-day version, valid for calendar day (00:00-23:59).

The Bateaux-Mourches company’s boat departs from Pont de Alma. Free for children under 4, discounted for ages 4-13. All information can be found here!

The most beautiful churches in the world

Sagrada Família (Barcelona)

For me, this is the most beautiful church in the world. It’s a must-see attraction from the inside for anyone visiting Barcelona!

It was designed by the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, who played a role in many of the city’s buildings. Construction began in 1882 and is progressing extremely slowly due to the complexity of the plans. Work is still ongoing, and when completed, it will be the largest basilica in the world.

Its length from the apse to the northern end is 90 meters and it’s 45 meters wide. Its interior height reaches 75 meters. Features of several styles can be found. The architects before Gaudí designed a neo-Catalan building, which is a type of neo-Gothic style. Gaudí himself further developed it in the spirit of modernism.

St. Peter’s Basilica (Vatican)

The largest and most significant church of the Roman Catholic Church, and also the seat of the papacy. The basilica is one of the holiest sites in Christianity and attracts millions of pilgrims and tourists annually.

The original church was built around 324 during the reign of Emperor Constantine I, above the tomb of Saint Peter the Apostle. Construction of the current basilica began in 1506 under Pope Julius II and was completed in 1626 under Pope Urban VIII. Many famous Renaissance and Baroque artists and architects participated in the construction, including Bramante, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Bernini.

St. Peter’s Square is located in front of the basilica, designed by Bernini. The square is surrounded by two semicircular colonnades. Inside, there are numerous artistic creations, including Michelangelo’s Pietà.

Seville Cathedral

One of Spain’s most significant and impressive buildings, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

It is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and the third-largest church in the Christian world. The 15th-century cathedral was built on the site of a former Moorish mosque, some elements of which were incorporated into the new structure.

Its outstanding feature is the 104-meter-high Giralda tower. The cathedral’s bell tower was originally the minaret of the Moorish mosque. On top of it is a 4-meter-high bronze statue, the „Giraldillo”.

St. Paul’s Cathedral (London)

The cathedral of the Anglican Diocese of London and an important symbol of English national identity.

The current cathedral is the fifth on the site; its predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. Construction of the new one began in 1675 based on Sir Christopher Wren’s designs and was completed in 1711.

The cathedral’s most famous feature is the dome. Inside, 30 meters high, is the Whispering Gallery. It’s famous for its special acoustics: a whisper along the wall can be clearly heard on the opposite side of the gallery.

Many famous personalities rest in the crypt, including Admiral Nelson, the Duke of Wellington, and Sir Christopher Wren.

Wat Arun (Bangkok)

One of Bangkok’s most iconic and beautiful Buddhist temples is located on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River, opposite the Royal Palace.

Its name means „Temple of Dawn”, referring to the sight of the first rays of the rising sun glinting off the temple’s decorations. Much of these come from Chinese porcelain plates and cups.

The central pagoda is a Khmer-style tower that symbolizes Mount Meru in Hindu-Buddhist cosmology. At its base are statues depicting mythological creatures and demons. We can climb to different levels of the tower via a steep staircase, offering a wonderful view.

Milan Cathedral

The symbol of Milan is one of the masterpieces of Italian Gothic architecture.

Its construction lasted nearly six centuries, from 1386 until the end of the 19th century. The cathedral is the third-largest Catholic church in the world. From its roof, there’s a beautiful view of the city and the Alps on clear days.

Its exterior is decorated with more than 3,400 statues depicting saints, biblical figures, and mythological creatures. The roof of the church is crowned by 135 stone spires, the highest of which is the 108.5-meter main tower, topped by the famous „Madonnina” statue.

Hagia Sophia (Istanbul)

One of the most outstanding works of Turkish architecture and a symbol of Istanbul.

Originally built as a Christian church in 537 during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, it was the largest church in the world for nearly a thousand years. Under Turkish rule, it was a mosque, then a museum, and since 2020, it has been functioning as a mosque again.

Its two distinctive features are the dome and the minarets. The nearly 56-meter-high dome has 40 windows. The mosque has four minarets that were added to the building during Ottoman rule. Their height and style differ slightly, reflecting the different times of their construction.

Notre-Dame (Paris)

One of the most well-known among the numerous iconic buildings of the French capital.

The cathedral is an outstanding example of French Gothic architecture, particularly famous for its western facade, which features two monumental towers, rich sculptural decoration, and a large rose window.

Many people don’t know that Notre-Dame’s organ is a huge musical treasure. Many consider Notre-Dame’s 113-register, five-manual grand organ to be one of the best instruments in the world.

The reconstruction of the temple, which was severely damaged in the 2019 fire, is fortunately nearing its end, so it will soon reopen its doors to visitors.

Golden Temple (India)

Officially named Harmandir Sahib, the holiest site of the Sikh religion is located in the Indian city of Amritsar.

It got its name from its upper level covered in gold, which was donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the 19th century. The temple is located in the middle of an artificial lake, the Amrit Sarovar, accessed by a long marble bridge. The building’s four entrances symbolize that it’s open to people of all castes, religions, and nationalities.

Part of the complex is a huge community kitchen, the Langar, where free food is served daily to up to 100,000 pilgrims and visitors.

Cologne Cathedral

The construction of this Gothic cathedral lasted for several centuries, from 1248 to 1880. This resulted in a monumental church.

It’s Germany’s largest Gothic church and the world’s third-tallest cathedral, with twin towers reaching 157 meters high. Its interior is also impressive: it has five naves, and the vault of the main nave is 43 meters high.

The cathedral houses numerous artistic treasures, including the Shrine of the Three Kings, one of the most significant goldsmith works of the Middle Ages. The building has 10,000 square meters of stained glass windows, many of which are original, medieval creations. The western facade of the cathedral is particularly impressive, with its richly decorated portals and rose window.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral (New York)

The Big Apple isn’t famous for its churches, but this one definitely stands out!

Located in the heart of Manhattan on Fifth Avenue, opposite the Rockefeller Center. The cathedral is impressive in its size: 123 meters long, 53 meters wide, and the towers reach 100 meters high. The building is made of white marble, creating a contrast with the surrounding skyscrapers.

The building contains 21 altars and 19 bells and can accommodate 2,200 people. It has been the site of many significant events, including the funeral service for President Kennedy’s brother, Robert F. Kennedy, in 1968.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque (Abu Dhabi)

The most impressive building in the capital of the United Arab Emirates is named after the country’s first president, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

The mosque is built of white Greek and Macedonian marble, decorated with gold, semi-precious stones, crystals, and ceramics. The main building is crowned by 82 domes, the largest of which is 85 meters high and 32.8 meters in diameter. It can accommodate up to 40,000 worshippers at once.

The mosque’s courtyard is lined with 1,000 columns, each decorated with intricate floral mosaic patterns. Inside the building is the world’s largest hand-woven carpet, covering an area of 5,700 square meters and weighing 47 tons. A huge chandelier hangs in the main prayer hall, weighing 12 tons and decorated with Swarovski crystals.

Salt Lake Temple (Salt Lake City)

One of the most important buildings of the Mormon Church is located in the capital of Utah.

The temple was built in Neo-Romanesque style, with granite walls up to 2.7 meters thick. The building is 68 meters high and has six towers, the tallest of which is 64 meters, topped with a gilded statue of the Angel Moroni.

Its peculiarity is that – unlike many other religious buildings – only members of the Mormon Church who meet certain church requirements can enter. Nevertheless, it’s definitely worth seeing as it’s an impressive sight from the outside as well.

Senso-ji Temple (Tokyo)

One of the oldest and most famous Buddhist temples, which legend says was founded in 628.

The complex consists of several buildings, including the main hall, a five-story pagoda, and numerous smaller shrines. The main hall houses the temple’s holiest object, the Kannon statue, which is kept hidden from public view.

It’s the site of numerous festivals and celebrations, including the famous Sanja Matsuri in May. The temple is particularly spectacular in spring when the cherry trees are in bloom, and at night when the buildings are illuminated.

Louvre (Paris)

Who hasn’t heard of perhaps the world’s most famous museum!? The museum has been open to the public since 1793!

It is home to countless artworks. In addition to its European fine arts collection, it also features Egyptian, Eastern, Islamic, Greek, Etruscan, and Roman exhibits.

The iconic glass pyramid in front of the museum is made of 673 glass panes and stands 21 meters high.

American Museum of Natural History (New York)

Located next to Central Park, this museum houses a collection of approximately 32 million items in its 45 halls, making it one of the world’s largest museums in this field.

Its exhibits on early humans, dinosaurs, and North American Native Americans are very popular, but the museum covers many other areas as well.

I had the opportunity to visit in 2018, and I can confidently recommend it for both children and adults!

Located on the southern side of Tiananmen Square, this is the largest museum in the world. It features traditional Chinese architecture with a pagoda roof and yellow glazed tiles.

The collections and exhibitions showcase Chinese history and culture with an extensive collection of artifacts.

Japan’s largest and oldest museum focuses on Japanese art and the art of Asia along the Silk Road.

It showcases a wide range of items from the country’s history, from a 40,000-year-old prehistoric chipped stone to invaluable cultural treasures of feudal Japan, and modern art creations.

Uffizi Gallery (Florence)

Founded in 1581, the museum’s building was designed by the Medici family’s famous architect, Giorgio Vasari. It can be safely said that this is the world’s most famous art gallery.

As its name suggests, it has a significant collection of paintings, but it also possesses invaluable ancient sculptures and a tapestry collection.

Some of the world’s most famous works can be seen here: Leonardo da Vinci’s Annunciation, Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, Michelangelo’s Holy Family, and the Roman Medici Venus statue.

Museum of Latin American Art / Museo de Arte Latinoamericano (Buenos Aires)

One of South America’s most important art museums, with over 400 works (paintings, sculptures, photographs).

You can see great works by famous Argentine artists such as Diego Rivera, Antonio Berni, Xul Solar, Jorge de la Vega, and Pedro Figari.

One of its most valuable pieces is a self-portrait by the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

National Air and Space Museum (Washington)

One of the most visited museums in the world, it is the premier exhibition site for the history of military, civilian, and space aviation.

It features many significant artifacts and items that were pivotal in aviation and space exploration. These include the Wright brothers’ first airplane, the lunar module, the Apollo 11 command module, and the Air France Concorde supersonic aircraft.

Prado Museum (Madrid)

The National Museum of Madrid’s gallery is based on the royal collection that opened in 1819.

The most significant part of its collection is Spanish painting (Murillo, Velázquez, Francisco de Goya). Besides paintings and sculptures, you can see over 5,000 drawings, 1,000 coins, medals, and other fine artworks.

Although I am not a big art enthusiast, I spent several hours in the building, as the artworks are so beautiful!

One of the world’s most important and largest collections is displayed across several museums, the most famous part being the Sistine Chapel.

It showcases masterpieces from ancient Near Eastern (Egyptian and Assyrian), Greek-Roman, and Etruscan-Italic art, through early Christian and medieval artworks (3rd-14th centuries) and Renaissance art (15th century) up to the 19th century, but also includes modern art.

The most visited section is the Vatican Gallery, where you can see paintings by Michelangelo and Raphael.

Russia’s largest and most famous museum, located in the Winter Palace.

Its name derives from the Hermitage, the private retreat built by Empress Catherine the Great, where she housed her first collection.

The museum features Italian Renaissance, Dutch Baroque, and French masterworks. You can see the throne room, the czar’s carriage, ancient sculptures, and European painting gems from the Enlightenment era. Nearly 8,000 Western European paintings adorn the museum walls.

This small Belgian city is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited! It’s no coincidence that a famous film describes it as a fairy tale.

Often referred to as the Venice of the North, Bruges is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and canal system. One of the best ways to explore the city is by boat, allowing you to see numerous historical buildings and charming bridges.

The historic center, with its impressive medieval buildings and the famous Belfry tower, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and offers many wonders.

Kyoto

One of Japan’s most magical cities, Kyoto is famous for its stunning temples, traditional teahouses, and well-preserved historic districts.

Cape Town

The jewel of South Africa, Cape Town is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations, nestled at the foot of a mountain along the coastline.

Table Mountain is one of the most iconic natural attractions in Cape Town. Visitors can reach the summit by cable car or on foot, enjoying breathtaking views of the city and the Atlantic Ocean.

Another significant attraction is the V&A Waterfront, a beautiful harbor area with restaurants, shops, and hotels, home to Africa’s largest contemporary art museum.

From Portugal, I didn’t choose Lisbon, although it’s a city with a great atmosphere, but Porto appealed to me more.

The city center is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with stunning sights and narrow cobblestone streets. The Ribeira district is particularly worth exploring, with many shops, restaurants, and cafés.

Another main tourist attraction in Porto is the port wine cellars, located across the Douro River in Vila Nova de Gaia. It’s a great experience to sit down with a glass of wine and enjoy the view of the Dom Luís I Bridge and the surrounding area.

Queenstown

Located on New Zealand’s South Island, Queenstown is known as the adventure capital of the country. Situated beautifully on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by the Remarkables mountain range, it is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

The city is famous for its thrilling jet boat rides on the Shotover River, racing through canyons. In the winter months, it becomes a hub for skiing and snowboarding.

In addition to active adventures, it’s an excellent place for relaxation. The nearby wine regions, such as Gibbston Valley, are famous for their Pinot Noir wines.

The heart of Tuscany is known as the cradle of the Renaissance, and its architectural and artistic heritage make it one of the most beautiful cities.

Its symbol is the cathedral, renowned for its massive dome, intricate marble decorations, and impressive interiors, which are integral to Florence’s cityscape. We can admire this from Michelangelo Square, the best viewpoint.

Among its museums, the Uffizi Gallery stands out, showcasing works by Botticelli and Michelangelo. Additionally, the Palazzo Pitti should not be missed, as the palace and gardens reflect the power and taste of the Medici family.

San Francisco

The most charming city on the west coast of the USA, though I believe many would rank it first.

The Golden Gate Bridge is naturally its most famous landmark, offering stunning views of the city, the surrounding bay, and Alcatraz Island, which once housed America’s most notorious prison and now operates as a museum.

In this hilly city, be sure to try the iconic cable car, which connects downtown to the waterfront area, Fisherman’s Wharf. For a truly enjoyable ride, stand on the steps and hold onto the rail!

A must-see photo spot is Lombard Street, one of the world’s steepest and most winding streets, beautifully lined with landscaped gardens.

Prague

The capital of the Czech Republic boasts one of Europe’s most beautiful old town areas, filled with Gothic architecture.

Everyone knows the Charles Bridge, Prague’s iconic structure. The bridge is always bustling with local artists, musicians, and street vendors, making the walk a memorable experience.

Overlooking the city is the world’s largest castle complex, which includes St. Vitus Cathedral and the Presidential Palace. The view of the city from here is breathtaking.

And of course, a visit to a pub or brewery is a must! Czech beers are widely recognized for their quality, and you can sample them in many small pubs.

Located on the western coast of British Columbia, Canada, Vancouver is one of the most popular North American cities for both nature lovers and city dwellers. The city is famous for its mountainous backdrop and multicultural community.

Vancouver also places a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability, leading in green initiatives and technologies. Its goal is to become the world’s greenest city by 2050. Even today, it is considered one of the most livable places in the world.

Nestled at the foot of the beautiful Atlas Mountains, Marrakesh is renowned for its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning architecture.

One of Morocco’s iconic cities, it is also known as the Red City due to the distinctive terracotta color of its walls. Its center is Jemaa el-Fnaa square, home to one of Africa’s largest and most famous markets.

Scotland’s capital is often underrated on lists because it’s not a large city.

Yet, it remains a personal favorite! Besides its beautiful buildings, it has a unique atmosphere that can’t be described – you have to visit to feel it!

The old town best preserves its medieval character, especially along the famous Royal Mile, which stretches from the Palace of Holyroodhouse to the castle. The street is filled with historical buildings, churches, and museums.

Tourist data also shows that it is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Just think of the castle, which alone holds numerous attractions. The view of the city and the Parliament is also fantastic!

Additionally, Budapest is famous for its baths. Many thermal baths await tourists, with the Széchenyi, Rudas, and Gellért baths standing out.

Needless to say, an endless list of castles could be mentioned. And of course, there are some that didn’t make the list, though they certainly deserve a spot. But choices had to be made…

Neuschwanstein Castle

Perched on a rock ledge above Alpsee and Pöllat Gorge, this castle is Germany’s most photographed building and one of the top tourist destinations.

Located in the southern part of the country, it was built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria to realize his childhood dreams. Admiration for Richard Wagner led him to decorate some rooms and fixtures with characters from the composer’s operas.

The castle’s design was inspired by medieval knightly castles. Its fairy-tale appearance also inspired Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella castles.

Château de Chambord

Built in the 16th century in France’s Loire Valley, this castle mixes Renaissance artistry with traditional medieval French architecture, making it one of the most beautiful French castles. Chambord is the largest of the Loire Valley castles.

It served both representative and residential purposes along with several other castles. Its dimensions are impressive: the north facade is 156 meters long, and the side facade is 117 meters. The castle contains 426 rooms, 282 fireplaces, 77 staircases, and 800 sculpted columns.

Its double helix staircase in the main building is considered an architectural masterpiece, twining upward through three floors.

The castle is surrounded by a 5250-hectare (about 1000 hectares accessible to the public) deer park.

Hearst Castle

While the USA is not known for its castles, this one is worth mentioning. Located halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, on a hill 8 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean.

The complex was built by American media mogul William Randolph Hearst in the early 20th century and served as his residence. The entire complex covers more than 8300 m². The largest house, Casa Grande, has about 115 rooms over four floors.

The buildings blend numerous architectural styles. The main building is largely inspired by the 16th-century Spanish cathedral (Iglesia de Santa Maria la Mayor, Ronda). Here, Hearst displayed part of his rich art collection.

Windsor Castle

The world’s largest castle still in use, dating from the time of William the Conqueror. The castle covers approximately 45,000 m².

It is one of the most important residences for the British royal family. Most kings and queens of England and the United Kingdom have had an influence on the castle’s construction and development. Over the centuries, it has been expanded with vast halls and grand apartments.

It covers 52,609 square meters, combining the characteristics of a fortress, a palace, and a town. It primarily exhibits Georgian and Victorian styles but shows Gothic features in a modern setting.

Its most famous part is St George’s Chapel, the chosen burial site for the British royal family and the venue for numerous royal weddings.

Alhambra

A Moorish fortress and palace in Granada, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984.

The complex includes parts created by Moors and Christians: the Alcazaba, the Nasrid Palaces, and the Generalife are the work of Arabs, while the Palace of Charles V and the Church of St. Mary were built by Christian Spaniards.

Alhambra’s intricate decorations, delicate carved plasterwork, and richly tiled surfaces are exceptionally beautiful. This complex is a standout example of Islamic art.

Himeji Castle

Japan’s – and arguably the world’s – most beautiful and strongest fortress castle. Known as the White Heron due to its brilliant white walls seen from afar, it was among the first Japanese sites to be included in the World Heritage list in 1993.

This 17th-century building is an excellent example of the development of Japanese castle architecture and defense technologies. Its main keep, which appears five-storied from the outside but has seven stories inside, is connected to three other towers, surrounded by three outer courtyards.

Schönbrunn Palace

Not only one of Vienna’s but also one of Austria’s most famous historical monuments and tourist attractions.

This Baroque-style palace was built in the 1700s and became the summer residence of the Habsburg rulers during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa.

The palace has over 1400 rooms, richly decorated interiors, and historic furnishings. It blends Baroque, Rococo, and Biedermeier styles, creating a harmonious ensemble.

Its park is dominated by the French formal garden style, integrated with natural landscape elements. Attractions include the Neptune Fountain, the famous maze, and the Rose Garden, which showcases hundreds of rose varieties. Versailles Palace

Located in Istanbul, it served as the administrative center of the Ottoman Empire between 1465 and 1853.

Royal Palace of Caserta

Formerly the residence of the Bourbon kings of Naples, located near Naples in Caserta.

It was the largest European construction of the 18th century. With its grandeur, dimensions, and associated gardens, it is one of the most grand and largest royal palaces in Europe.

Its interiors are a mix of Baroque and Rococo styles. The building contains 1200 rooms and 56 staircases. The facade features three entrance halls, with 243 windows. The most distinguished interior part is the Appartamento Reale, the royal apartment, which is richly decorated with frescoes, gilded adornments, and refined stucco.

The garden is also spectacular, stretching for several kilometers with waterfalls, fountains, and meticulously maintained vegetation. The Great Waterfall at the end of the garden starts at the highest point of the park and descends towards the palace, providing a breathtaking view.

Mysore Palace

Located in the city of Mysore, India, this palace is one of the grandest and most visited royal palaces in the country. The building, rich in complex forms, is a prime example of Indo-Saracenic architecture, which mixes Muslim and Rajput styles with Gothic decorations. It features finely curved arches, domes, projecting bay windows, and columns ranging from Hindu to Byzantine styles.

Balmoral Castle

This estate in Scotland was purchased by Queen Victoria and her spouse, Prince Albert, and remains a favorite summer residence of the royal family.

Though referred to as a castle, it appears and functions more like a Victorian-era, neo-Gothic inspired, Scottish baronial style country house. The seven-story tower is inspired by medieval defensive tower houses, while the corner towers evoke 16th-century French chateau architecture. Additional Scottish baronial features at Balmoral include stepped gables, dormer windows, and a crenellated porte-cochère.

The castle’s significance is highlighted by its appearance on the reverse side of the Royal Bank of Scotland’s £100 note and as the place where Queen Elizabeth II passed away in 2022.

Magdalena Palace

This iconic building in Santander, northern Spain, was used as a royal summer residence in the 20th century.

The vast palace, stretching nearly 90 meters in an east-west direction, faces south and is located on the highest point of the Magdalena Peninsula, from which it gets its name.

The palace blends elements of Neo-Renaissance and English styles.

Potala Palace

Perched atop the rocky Red Hill west of Lhasa city, at an elevation of 3,630 meters, stands this massive complex.

It once served as the seat of the Tibetan government and residence of the country’s leader, the Dalai Lama. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage site in 1994, describing it as „simultaneously a fortress, temple, monastery, and school, the epicenter of political and religious life in the region, and a splendid example of Tibetan art at its most sophisticated”.

The 13-story structure is approximately 118 meters high, covering an area of 130,000 square meters, and reportedly consists of exactly 999 rooms.

Today, Potala Palace serves as a museum and pilgrimage site. Its labyrinthine rooms and sanctuaries are connected by numerous doors, corridors, and staircases. Its halls and long galleries are adorned with brilliant wall paintings and colorful silk embroideries of Tibetan Buddhist art, along with nearly two hundred thousand sculptures.

Back in November, I found a Wizz Air flight from Budapest to Paris for 7500 HUF, which conveniently flies to Orly Airport. However, the return flight on Monday was quite expensive, so instead, I traveled to Rome that day, not home. 🙂

Friday

Getting to the city from Orly

The plane landed at Orly at 12:30 PM, which is located in the southern part of the city. There is a direct bus to the city center (Orlybus), which is not covered by public transport tickets and day passes. However, the T7 tram can be taken with a single journey ticket (€2.15), and you can transfer to Metro Line 7 at Villejuif-Louis Aragon station. Follow the T7 signs at the airport.

Ticket machines are available everywhere, and it’s worth getting the Paris Visit Card. This card allows unlimited travel. Zones 1-3 are sufficient (I stayed in the suburbs, and it was enough to get there). I bought a 3-day pass for €30.90 (1, 2, 3, and 5-day passes are available).

Day passes must always be validated: at the gate for the metro and in the validator machine on buses and trams. It’s important to note that the day pass is valid for the calendar day, with the first validation on the first day.

The name, as well as the start and end dates, should theoretically be written on the day pass. I didn’t write them, and the inspector didn’t mind.

The regular ticket (called t+) costs €2.15 and is valid for 90 minutes (just like in Budapest). However, here, only the following transfers are allowed: from bus to bus, bus to tram, tram to tram, and tram to bus. Transfers to the metro are not allowed.

Luggage storage

I didn’t want to carry my backpack until evening, so I left it at the luggage storage at the Gare d’Est train station, which is quite cheap. It’s located on the -1 level next to the Paul bakery, and there is a security service.

It’s open from 7:30 AM to 10:30 PM. There are three locker sizes: small (€5.50), medium (€7.50), and large (€9.50). I chose the small one, but it still had a large capacity. Close the door, turn the lock, insert the coins into the machine, and you’re done. The receipt will contain all the information. It only works with coins, but there is a change machine where you can get coins for banknotes. To open the locker, insert the receipt into the slot, and the door will open.

Supposedly, there are luggage storage facilities at other train stations as well (Gare de Lyon, Gare du Nord, Gare Montparnasse), but I can’t confirm this. Gare d’Est is quite central and served by several metro lines, making it suitable for luggage storage.

Sacré Coeur Basilica

I traveled here by metro, and after a short walk, the impressive basilica stood before me on the hilltop. Entry is free, so definitely go inside! I walked up, but there’s also a funicular.

A mass had just started, making the beautiful interior even more sublime. The size is truly immense, especially the dome.

Facing the basilica, there is a clean restroom to the right, which costs €2 to use.

Place du Tertre

A few hundred meters away is a small square and a few streets with many cafes, restaurants, and shops. It’s a very charming area worth a stroll.

Place de la Concorde

This is a large square where the Champs-Élysées begins, one of the city’s central squares.

In the middle stands a large obelisk, and on the north side is the beautiful Hôtel de la Marine. The square was under renovation, but it’s a good starting point for a nice walk.

Champs-Élysées

I probably don’t need to say much about this. The wide avenue is one of the most famous streets in the world. There are many elegant shops here, including the Louis Vuitton and Dior buildings, which are noticeable from afar.

I would highlight two palaces. The Grand Palais was closed for renovation, but entry to the opposite Petite Palais was free. It’s an art museum with a smaller exhibition that could be visited. However, the interior of the building was also worth seeing.

Arc de Triomphe

The Arc de Triomphe marks the northwestern end of the Champs-Élysées. It’s only when you see it in person that you truly grasp its immense size.

The traffic around it is always heavy, making it difficult to get a good photo. The best shot I got was from the opposite side, so it’s worth crossing to the road opposite the Champs-Élysées (there is also an underpass, which is easier).

You can also use the underpass to reach the monument itself. Here, you can buy a ticket to the observation deck at the top. I didn’t go up because it was raining a bit, and the weather wasn’t good for the view.

Eiffel Tower

I know many people prioritize going up to the observation deck, but I didn’t feel the need. Instead, I went to Montparnasse on Sunday, from where you can see the tower.

I walked from the Arc de Triomphe, and it was quite exciting to get closer and closer to the tower. Then, from the banks of the Seine, you can take great pictures, and I even caught a rainbow. Its size is indeed massive, and I wasn’t disappointed.

I decided to wait until it got dark. I sat in the Champ-de-Mars park for a bit, and suddenly the tower lit up. I highly recommend experiencing this sight.

I had planned just this for the day, so I took the metro to get my bag and then headed to my accommodation.

Saturday

Rain was forecasted for the afternoon early in the week, so I strategically planned to visit the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay museums in the afternoon. In the morning, I visited a few places despite the cloudy weather.

Panthéon

One of the metro stops leading to the city was not far away, so I started my morning here. Unfortunately, there were two large tents in front of the building, so you couldn’t see it clearly from the front, but its immense size was still evident.

And since I was here, it was also worth visiting the Église Saint-Étienne-du-Mont church behind the Panthéon. Its beautiful portal and decorations are extraordinary.

Jardin du Luxembourg

One of Paris’s most important parks is at the end of the road leading to the Panthéon.

It’s a large, spacious park with many statues, the Luxembourg Palace, and a fountain in front of it. I spent some time here; there are many chairs, some reclined for better relaxation.

Église Saint-Sulpice

This church is a few blocks away from the park and is the second-largest church in Paris. It also appeared in the movie „The Da Vinci Code.”

Entrance is free, so of course, I went in to see it from the inside.

Musée d’Orsay

I had a ticket for noon, and the entry process took just a minute. Definitely buy tickets online in advance because the line for on-site ticket purchase was very long!

I left my coat in the free cloakroom and set off to explore the museum. You immediately enter the section you see in many pictures. It’s a great experience to stand there and realize you’re in such an important museum!

There are several levels, organized by styles and periods. It’s worth visiting here before the Louvre because, after the culture shock, you might not be as enthusiastic. 🙂

Louvre

I bought my ticket on Wednesday for 3 PM, and it’s almost mandatory to purchase in advance. I didn’t see any on-site ticket sales, which is no surprise given the constant high demand.

There are two entrances. One is at the famous glass pyramid, where there was a huge line. It started raining just then, so the visitors got pretty wet. In bad weather, don’t join this line!

I was savvy and went to the other entrance, which is under the Louvre. If you face the building, it’s on the left side, at the gate that opens onto the street. There’s a small mall here, so at least the weather is pleasant. Entry was pretty quick; I was inside in about 15 minutes.

There is a free luggage storage area on level -1. After closing the locker, you enter a four-digit code, which you use to open it. Remember the locker number and especially the code.

Then I started exploring. I could write pages, but I think it’s unnecessary. The sheer number of works is incredible, and if you want to thoroughly explore it, you need to dedicate a day. Honestly, by the third hour, I was tired: combined with the Musée d’Orsay, it’s a massive culture shock in one day. 🙂

Most people, of course, are at the Mona Lisa (Room 711). I find it a bit puzzling why it’s the biggest attraction. There are countless other works that are much more beautiful. But to each their own…

It’s worth having a system for your visit: for example, start in one direction and explore one floor, then move up and back. Sometimes you don’t know where you are. 🙂

Sunday

Notre-Dame

The famous cathedral, which was damaged by fire a few years ago, is soon to be completed.

I started this day with a visit there. The construction is still significant, so you can only clearly see and photograph the upper part. Honestly, there’s nothing particularly special about it from the outside, but because of its name, it’s a must-visit.

Louvre from the outside

Walking along the Seine, I crossed the Pont des Arts bridge to the inner courtyard of the Louvre. This time it wasn’t raining, so I was able to take good photos.

Jardin des Tuileries

You can walk from the Louvre to the Place de la Concorde through this park. There’s nothing extraordinary about it; it’s a pleasant resting place, but nothing more.

Colonne Vendôme

A few streets from the park stands a square with a Roman-style column topped with a statue of Napoleon. The square is surrounded by elegant buildings, including the Ritz Hotel.

Église de la Madeleine

Seeing pictures of this church immediately reminded me of my trip to Athens. From the outside, it resembles an ancient Greek temple.

Since entry is free, I naturally went in. I caught the end of a mass, with a beautiful choir singing, so I stayed until the end. I hadn’t attended a French mass before, so I can check that off my list. 🙂

Place de la Bastille

I took the metro to this square, where the famous fortress once stood. You might remember from history class that the Storming of the Bastille was one of the main events in French history. Today, only a monument, the July Column, in the middle of the square, commemorates it.

Les Invalides

From the square, I took bus 69 here, now in rainy weather. It was supposed to rain for half an hour, and when I arrived, it stopped just in time. The building is a large, castle-like complex, with a main courtyard and some parts you can explore.

Entry to the Dome des Invalides is free, and there is a smaller exhibition of military artifacts on the upper floor.

Napoleon’s tomb is here, in a mausoleum, where the famous leader rests in a large sarcophagus. I didn’t go in because I was pressed for time.

Centre Pompidou

In my opinion, one of the world’s most interesting-looking art complexes. At first glance, I would have thought it was some kind of factory if I didn’t know what it was. 🙂

Hôtel de Ville

This is the city hall, a beautiful building. With the Olympics taking place in Paris this year, this is also advertised in the pictures.

Montparnasse Tower

I took metro line 4 to the Montparnasse-Bienvenüe station. There are few signs indicating where the entrance is, so it took me 10 minutes to find it. If you exit from the train station, the tower is right in front. The entrance is on the left side.

After a security check, it takes a minute by elevator to reach the 56th floor. This is a closed observation area with a café and a gift shop. You need to go up one flight of stairs to the open terrace on the 59th floor.

I bought my ticket online for 5:30 PM because sunset was at 6:00, so I could see Paris in both daylight and darkness. I stayed up for more than an hour, and it was wonderful to witness the Eiffel Tower starting to light up. It’s worth buying the ticket for sunset.

Monday

My flight from Orly to Rome departed at 9:35 AM, so I left my accommodation at 6:30 AM. I took the T7 tram to get there.

At Orly, you no longer need to remove electronic devices and liquids from your bag; the new X-ray machine can check them as is.

The capital of France is located on the banks of the Seine River. Paris has played a significant role over two millennia and continues to be one of the world’s leading economic and cultural centers, among the four most important cities globally.

Eiffel Tower

Naturally, this is the first thing that comes to everyone’s mind about Paris! The tower standing on the banks of the Seine is one of the world’s most famous landmarks.

It is named after Gustave Eiffel, the engineer who owned the designing company. It was built for the 1889 World’s Fair and was the tallest structure in the world until 1930. The tower’s total height is 324 meters, with the tower itself being 300 meters tall, topped with a 24-meter television antenna.

It’s worth waiting for sunset in the nearby Champ de Mars, when they start to light it up. A great experience!

The tower has several levels, with the 3rd level being the highest (276 meters high), which can be reached by a lift from the 2nd level.

Champs-Élysées

It’s definitely worth walking along Paris’s famous avenue, where you can encounter numerous world-famous brands. The road runs between Place de la Concorde and the Arc de Triomphe.

Access: the metro line 1 runs underneath the avenue, with Charles de Gaulle-Étoile and Concorde as the two endpoints.

Arc de Triomphe

The Triumphal Arch stands at the western end of the Champs-Élysées, another iconic structure of Paris.

Napoleon ordered the building to proclaim the glory of the French army. Since the emperor was a fan of ancient Rome, it was modeled on the similar monument of Roman ruler Titus. It was not completed until Napoleon’s fall, finishing in 1836.

The Arc de Triomphe bears numerous inscriptions, partly commemorating about 158 locations of Napoleonic battles and, in accordance with the emperor’s last will, all 660 generals of the era. Beneath the arch is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where an eternal flame burns.

Its top serves as an observation deck. Free for EU citizens under 26! All information here!

Place de la Concorde

One of Paris’s main hubs, from where the Champs-Élysées starts.

It was once the scene of revolutionary bloodshed. Today, the American embassy and the Crillon luxury hotel are located here, offering a splendid view towards the Arc de Triomphe.

The square’s defining element is the column erected by King Louis Philippe of France. It is the counterpart of the obelisk standing in front of the Luxor Temple, donated to France by the Egyptian viceroy, Mohammed Ali, in 1829.

Next to the obelisk stand two fountains – symbols of river and sea navigation –, and statues of France’s eight leading cities surround them.

Access: by metro lines 1, 8, 12 to the Concorde stop.

Grand Palais

The Grand Palais is one of the most significant buildings on the Champs-Élysées, notable even from the outside.

It was built for the 1900 World’s Fair as a monumental symbol of art and technology. Its architectural style is characteristic of the Beaux-Arts movement, blending modern architectural and artistic trends of the time with classical elements.

Its magnificent façade, huge glass roof, and elegant wrought iron structures make it particularly remarkable. The large glass dome above the main entrance and the fine decorative elements reflect the spirit of the Belle Époque era.

The building is divided into three main sections: the Palais de la Découverte (Discovery Palace), the Grand Exhibition Hall, and the National Galleries, which host various art and science exhibitions.

Petit Palais

The Petit Palais is opposite the Grand Palais, in many ways, its smaller counterpart.

It was also built for the 1900 World’s Fair to showcase arts and crafts. Today, it houses the Paris Fine Arts Museum (Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris).

Its collection is extensive, ranging from antiquity to the end of the 19th century, including paintings, sculptures, art objects, and graphics. It features French and European masterpieces, as well as masterpieces of ancient and medieval art.

Notre-Dame

Paris’s most famous Gothic cathedral rises with its large size and beautiful decoration on one of the small islands in the Seine.

The cathedral is a masterpiece of early Gothic architecture. Its foundation stone was laid by Pope Alexander III in 1163, and construction continued until 1345. Napoleon I was crowned emperor here in 1804.

Notre-Dame is built of stone, with the cross-vaulted solution typical of large Gothic medieval churches. Its three richly decorated portals and the equally ornate stained glass windows are significant decorations of the cathedral. The great rose windows made of multi-colored glass are also important elements. Many consider its 113-register, five-manual organ to be one of the best instruments in the world.

The building was severely damaged in a fire on April 15, 2019. After years of work, it will be open again in December 2024!

Sainte-Chapelle

Located a few hundred meters from Notre-Dame, its tower is visible from afar. The 13th-century Gothic chapel is a popular tourist attraction for its interior.

The single-nave chapel is famous for two peculiarities. One is the two-level solution, a rare example in medieval church architecture. The other is the upper chapel’s large rose window and 15 huge, stained-glass panels, depicting Old Testament scenes, events from the life of Christ, Saint Helena, Saint Louis, and the Apocalypse.

Sacré Coeur

North of the city center, the imposing basilica stands on the city’s highest hill.

The building was erected in memory of those who fell in the war against the Prussians, and the location is no coincidence (Montmartre means „Martyrs’ Hill”).

The church has five domes, and its interior is covered with marble and mosaics. The building is 85 meters wide, 35 meters long, the dome is 55 meters high and 16 meters wide. The highest point of the dome is 83 meters. Bronze statues of Joan of Arc and Saint Louis stand on either side of the main entrance.

Access: by metro line 2 to Anvers, line 12 to Abbesses. If you want to avoid stairs, a funicular operates to the square in front of the basilica.

Les Invalides

Not far from the Eiffel Tower, this complex contains monuments and museums related to France’s military history.

One of the most important parts is the Dôme des Invalides. The double church on the complex’s main axis was the venue for masses held for former soldiers.

Napoleon is buried under the dome. His sarcophagus, as well as his characteristic hat and coat, can be viewed for an entrance fee.

Panthéon

A building similar to the Roman Pantheon, it serves as the resting place for famous French individuals.

Originally intended as a church by King Louis XV, in honor of Paris’s patron saint, Saint Genevieve, it became the burial place for France’s greats from 1885. It houses the remains of Rousseau, Victor Hugo, Voltaire, among others.

Architecturally, it combines the colonnades of the Louvre and the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London with Gothic structural solutions. The hall of Corinthian columns closely resembles the similar structural unit of the Roman Pantheon.

Opera

The Palais Garnier has been operational since 1875, a neobaroque building that can accommodate 2200 spectators.

At the entrance of the theater, between the columns, bronze busts of famous composers (e.g., Mozart, Rossini, Auber, Beethoven) can be seen.

Access: by metro lines 3, 7, 8 to the Opera stop.

Madeleine Church

This church receives less attention, but it is worth seeing both inside and out.

Napoleon had it built after the Battle of Jena in 1806, but it was only completed in 1842. It shows the influence of the Maison Carrée in Nîmes, southern France, and even the Theseion in Athens, built during the time of Pericles.

Its bronze door is adorned with bas-reliefs depicting the Ten Commandments. Notable in the richly decorated marble and gold interior is the dome fresco, and valuable sculptures can also be seen.

Access: by metro lines 8, 12, 14 to Madeleine stop.

Colonne Vendôme

This column is a monument to the glory of the Napoleonic wars, especially commemorating the victory at Austerlitz in 1805.

It is 44 meters high, and bronze melted from cannons captured during the Battle of Austerlitz was used for its construction. At one time, a statue of Napoleon, dressed as a Roman deity, stood at the top of the column.

It was modeled after the ancient Column of Trajan and is covered in spiral bas-reliefs depicting important events from Napoleon’s campaigns.

The square is surrounded by elegant buildings, including famous brand stores and the Ministry of Justice.

Access: 450 meters on foot from the Opera.

City Hall (Hôtel de Ville)

The central building of Parisian administration, definitely worth a visit.

Built in the 16th century but reconstructed in the 19th century after a fire. It’s a stunning example of the neo-Renaissance architectural style, with a richly decorated façade adorned with statues and bas-reliefs, paying tribute to historical figures of Paris and significant events in France.

The interior is also uniquely rich in decorations, including frescoes, carvings, and spectacular stained glass windows.

It is open to the public on a limited basis, with access possible during certain exhibitions and open days.

Access: by metro lines 1, 11 to Hôtel de Ville stop.

Statue of Liberty

This is a small-scale replica of the original Statue of Liberty in New York.

The 11.5-meter-tall statue is located on the southwestern tip of the Allée des Cygnes, an artificial embankment island in the Seine, not far from the Eiffel Tower. It is oriented so that its face looks towards New York.

Access: by metro line 10 to Charles Michels stop, then 550 meters on foot.

Moulin Rouge

The famous cabaret inspired two films of the same name and still hosts performances today (though quite expensive). Many famous singers and stars have performed on its stage.

Access: by metro line 2 to Blanche stop; line 12 to Pigalle stop and then 200 meters.

Jardin du Luxembourg

One of Paris’s most popular and largest parks, great for walking and relaxing.

It spans over 25 hectares and combines different styles: English, French classical, and natural. It is adorned with numerous statues, fountains, and flower beds, including the famous Medici Fountain. The park features a large artificial pond, the Grand Bassin.

On its northern side stands the Luxembourg Palace, today the seat of the French Senate.

Access: by metro lines 4, 10 to Odéon stop, then 300 meters on foot; RER B train to Luxembourg stop.

Attractions near Paris

Disneyland

If traveling with children, this is an unmissable attraction among the sights of Paris! Many accounts describe the indescribable experience for children meeting Mickey Mouse or seeing the pink castle.

Eurodisney consists of two parts. One park is Disneyland Park, more suitable for younger children. The other is Walt Disney Studio Park, where older children can also enjoy themselves. Additionally, there’s Disneyland Villages, where shops and restaurants await visitors.

For children, especially the younger ones, Disneyland Park will be of most interest as it brings to life the characters and buildings of the fairy tale world. It is divided into five areas and has a total of 39 attractions! The iconic pink Sleeping Beauty Castle is located in this park.

Access:

• Get off at Marne-la-Vallée/Chessy station, from there it’s a 2-minute walk to the entrance. From downtown Paris, it’s a 35-minute trip by the RER A suburban train;
• From Charles-de-Gaulle airport, Disneyland is very easily accessible by TGV, only a 9-minute journey.

Versailles

Although about 17 km west of the center, its famous palace and park are definitely worth the visit. It played an important governmental role but has long functioned as a museum.

Its most famous room is the Hall of Mirrors (Galerie des Glaces), which is open to visitors. The Grand Trianon is also located here, where the treaty that significantly reduced Hungary’s territory was signed on June 4, 1920.

• By RER C to Versailles Château Rive Gauche terminal station (in zone 4);
• or by bus 171 to Chateau de Versailles terminal station (starting from Pont de Sévres metro station on the city side).

Louvre

What better place to start than with one of the most renowned museums!

One of Paris’s most famous public buildings, it’s world-renowned both for its architecture and the museum it houses. It’s been the largest exhibition space in the French capital since 1793.

In the 20th century, a glass pyramid made of steel, aluminum, and glass, standing 21.65 m tall with a side length of 35.4 m and consisting of more than 660 glass panels, was erected in the square bounded by the Louvre building. This remains an iconic part of the museum to this day.

Its collection includes more than 35,000 artworks from prehistory to the 19th century, showcasing humanity’s cultural and artistic evolution from various parts of the world. Its most famous piece is Leonardo da Vinci’s „Mona Lisa” which is the museum’s most visited piece.

There are two entrances: at the glass pyramid above and below at a small plaza (Carrousel). In bad weather, the latter is preferable.

Purchase tickets online in advance due to high interest at all times. You can buy them for a specific time, but once inside, you can stay as long as you like.

Musée d’Orsay

Another famous museum in Paris, specializing in the art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Located on the banks of the Seine, not far from the Louvre, it was built for the world exhibition in 1900 as the Orsay train station, which was converted in the 1980s. The large central hall under a glass roof, once the arrival and departure site for trains, has now become the museum’s main exhibition space.

Centre Pompidou

The building is interesting from the outside, appearing at first glance to be a factory. But in fact, it’s a very important art center.

Its exterior is industrial design, where structural elements such as pipes, stairs, and structural frames are located, marked with color coding for different functions.

French President George Pompidou initiated the creation of a cultural institution that presents all forms of modern art. The museum is home to modern and contemporary art from the early 20th century.

The collection includes paintings, sculptures, photographs, films, and other visual arts. Notable artists such as Picasso, Kandinsky, Matisse, Duchamp, and Pollock are featured, along with digital art and multimedia creations.

Musée Rodin

The Rodin Museum, dedicated to the work and life of the renowned French sculptor Auguste Rodin.

In 1916, the artist himself offered his entire art collection to the French state on the condition that an institution be created to display his works. This opened in 1919, after Rodin’s death. Almost all of his important sculptures and more than 7000 drawings can be seen, as well as ancient artworks collected by the artist.

It’s located in a beautiful 18th-century rococo-style mansion, the Hôtel Biron. Rodin used the building and its accompanying garden as his own studio and home in his final years. Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac

The museum near the Eiffel Tower showcases the art and culture of non-European civilizations.

It is named after Jacques Chirac, the former President of France, who was a great supporter of the project and committed to promoting cultural diversity and non-European arts.

Musée de l’Orangerie

The museum located next to the Place de la Concorde primarily houses a collection of early 20th-century impressionist and post-impressionist art.
