Gran Canaria is one of the most popular islands in the Canary Islands, thanks to its natural attractions and abundant entertainment options.

It is the most diverse island, offering everything from deserts to tropical forests and various climatic zones. Despite its name, it is not the largest in the archipelago, ranking third in size after Tenerife and Fuerteventura.

Las Palmas

The capital city is located in the northeast corner of the island. The city’s landscape is dominated by its port, one of the largest in the Atlantic Ocean.

A must-see is the old town area called Vegueta, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2007. By taking the elevator up to the tower of the Santa Ana Cathedral, you can enjoy the panoramic views.

Its largest beach, Playa de Las Canteras, stretches for several kilometers and is lined with bars, restaurants, and hotels.

A significant historical building is the Casa de Colón. This museum primarily honors the life and voyages of Christopher Columbus, particularly the period when the explorer stopped on the island on his way to America.

Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés

Located in the southern part of the island, these two resort towns have now merged and are well-known vacation spots. The area offers many activities for tourists (more details below).

Its approximately 8 km long beach is very popular, making it a favorite holiday destination for young people due to the seaside entertainment venues.

A large sandy area has formed between the town and the beach. The dunes are shaped by the wind, constantly changing their form and position due to the constant breezes. It is especially worth taking a walk at sunset to see this beautiful landscape.

Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria

This resort town is built on two hills, making its beach very sheltered with a pleasant climate. It is the sunniest town in Spain.

Its main attraction is the spacious, well-maintained sandy beach, Playa de Puerto Rico. It is one of the most popular beaches on the island, featuring a marina, restaurants, hotels, and cocktail bars.

Playa de Amadores

Gran Canaria’s iconic beach is located not far from Puerto Rico.

It is a popular destination for both tourists and locals, thanks to its crystal-clear turquoise water and fine white sand.

The beach is about 800 meters long and lies in a curved bay surrounded by high cliffs, protecting it from large waves and strong winds. It is an ideal spot for families, as the calm water provides safe swimming conditions for all ages.

Located northwest of Puerto Rico, at the end of the main road 1, this small town nestles between high cliffs.

Although it has only a small sandy bay, it is a popular holiday spot. It is perfect for those who prefer a quieter vacation.

Agaete

The Agaete Valley is one of the few places in Europe where coffee beans are grown. Besides coffee plantations, the valley also features orange, avocado, and papaya trees, contributing to its natural diversity.

The town is home to the Huerto de las Flores botanical garden, showcasing more than a hundred different tropical and subtropical species.

The Puerto de las Nieves port is popular, where traditional fishing boats dock, and seaside restaurants offer dishes made from freshly caught fish.

Telde

Gran Canaria’s second-largest city is located on the eastern part of the island, about 15 kilometers from the capital. It is an excellent example of traditional Canarian architecture and lifestyle.

Its historical center is the San Juan quarter, with cobblestone streets and beautiful colonial buildings. A notable building is the 16th-century San Juan Bautista Church.

For those interested in learning more about the city’s history and local life, it is worth visiting the Casa-Museo León y Castillo and the Casa Condal museums.

Pico de las Nieves

Gran Canaria’s highest point is 1949 meters high.

A road leads almost to the summit, allowing anyone to enjoy the view from above. However, it is worth checking the weather forecast before setting out, as the weather at the top can be completely different from that at the coast.
