European islands you must visit!

There are many great islands in Europe perfect for holidays or active vacations. Here, I focus mainly on larger islands where you can spend several days actively exploring.

Most beautiful and best european islands

Iceland

You might think I’m starting with one of the coldest and most northern islands. But if you take a closer look at Iceland, you’ll see it’s one of the most beautiful places (and not just within Europe)!

For those who love nature and hiking, Iceland is a perfect choice! It’s worth going for at least a week to tour the island.

Besides numerous waterfalls, glaciers, and volcanoes, be sure to visit a hot spring. Due to volcanic activity, there are many such baths on the island where you can enjoy the benefits of the water in a wonderful setting.

Malta

The island between Sicily and Africa is a blend of European and Arabic styles. It’s an excellent destination if you’re looking for an island in Europe.

As I mentioned, the mix of the two cultures makes Malta unique. Be sure to visit its architectural heritage (the most famous being the former capital, Mdina).

And of course, the beautiful beaches cannot be missed. The Blue Lagoon beach on Comino Island is easily accessible and a must-visit.

Azores

Nature lovers have another bucket list destination with this group of 9 islands. Located in the Atlantic Ocean between Europe and America, these islands are often called the “Hawaii of Europe.”

Thanks to volcanic activity, unique natural formations have developed here. The most famous attractions are the caldera lakes, which have different color shades.

Although all nine islands are beautiful, exploring them is time-consuming. However, Sao Miguel and Terceira islands are must-see!

Tenerife

One of my favorite European islands, where I visited in January 2019. If you love hiking and “extremes”, Tenerife is a perfect choice.

In the center of this volcanic island stands Teide, Spain’s highest peak at 3,718 meters. Reaching the summit is a great experience, and luckily, no mountaineering experience is needed. The weather can change rapidly, but the panoramic view from the top is worth it!

Don’t forget the beaches! The southern part is popular, but the most beautiful beach is in the north. Teresitas beach is often featured in the media for its postcard-worthy scenery.

It’s also worth sailing to Gran Canaria, another beautiful member of the Canary Islands.

Sicily

The southern Italian island is almost a country within a country. Here, the true chaotic Italian world appears, yet it’s a wonderful tourist destination.

The Greek architectural influence is strong here; just visit the cities of Siracusa and Agrigento to see it.

In Sicily, you’ll find Europe’s most famous volcano, Etna. This volcano near Catania is still active today, but it can be observed safely.

If you want a beautiful beach, San Vito lo Capo is your place! It’s often mentioned as one of Europe’s most beautiful beaches for its Caribbean feel.

Greek Islands: but which one?

Here’s where it gets tricky. There are so many Greek islands that picking just one is impossible. Therefore, I’ll suggest a few that could easily contend for the title of Europe’s most beautiful island!

Santorini, I think this is the one most people would name. For those who love romantic places and atmospheres, visiting here is a must at least once!

Zakynthos is the most popular member of the Ionian Sea. Everyone has seen the stunning Navagio Bay, where a rusty smuggler ship rests on fine sand.

However, I would first travel to the largest Greek island, Crete. Not only does it have several beautiful beaches (e.g., Balos, Elafonissi), but you can also explore one of Europe’s longest gorges. And we haven’t even mentioned the historical sites yet.

Menorca

When it comes to the Balearic Islands, many people think of Mallorca and Ibiza first. But I can also confidently recommend Menorca.

The island is known for its characteristic megalithic structures, unique chamber tombs (navetas), T-shaped columns (taulas), and stone walls (talaiots). Its flora and fauna are exceptional, with many species found nowhere else.

Of course, most people travel here for the beaches, and there are plenty of them. Almost everywhere you’ll find a beautiful cove with sandy shores.

For hiking enthusiasts, you can even walk around the entire island. The 185 km Camí de Cavalls trail passes by stunning bays and through villages. So, who’s up for the challenge? 🙂

Madeira

The island of eternal spring is almost always green. This Portuguese island is famous for its levadas, or medieval irrigation channels.

You can take great hikes in the laurel forests and there are many excellent viewpoints of the ocean on the island. Perhaps the São Lourenço Peninsula is the island’s most beautiful area in this regard.

However, those coming to Madeira for its beaches might be a bit disappointed. Almost all the beaches are pebbly, with only one sandy beach.

Sardinia

The Italian island is one of Europe’s most popular islands, where you’ll find beautiful beaches.

I think many have heard of La Pelosa beach, which, with its white sand and turquoise water, would be among the most beautiful even in the Caribbean.

So, if you want to sunbathe on several great beaches, Sardinia is a perfect destination!
