This animal-depicting decoration is extremely unusual in Islamic art, which generally avoids figurative representations. Persian and Turkic influences also appear behind the mosaic images, making the building special. Calligraphic inscriptions and geometric patterns decorate the surfaces on both sides of the entrance gate.

Another distinctive feature of the building is the asymmetric solution of the domes, as the builders tried to symmetrically replicate the structure of the Ulugbek Madrasah, but deviations occurred due to terrain conditions.

Ulugbek Madrasah

The interior of the mausoleum is breathtaking: the walls are decorated with onyx, marble, and jade, while the ceiling is covered with gilded papier-mâché with muqarnas – honeycomb-like – decoration. Timur’s tomb is made of green jade stone, which according to history came from Genghis Khan’s throne. In reality, the body rests in the underground crypt.

The building’s historical significance is enormous: after Timur’s death in 1405, he was buried here, and later his son, grandson Ulugbek, and other family members were also laid to rest here. Soviet archaeologists opened the crypt in 1941, confirming that Timur was lame. An inscription at the entrance allegedly cursed those who disturb Timur’s rest.

Aksaray Mausoleum

One of the lesser-known but architecturally significant monuments of the Timurid period, built in the second half of the 15th century. The structure was originally part of a larger complex, of which only the mausoleum and some wall remains have survived. The building’s name means „white palace”.

The mausoleum’s dome and facade are decorated with blue and white majolica tiles forming geometric and plant patterns. Bibi-Khanym Mosque

One of Central Asia’s largest and most ambitious religious buildings, built by Timur between 1399 and 1404 after his Indian campaign. Historical Samarkand was one of the papermaking centers along the Silk Road, from where this Chinese-origin technique spread further to the Muslim world and later to Europe. The workshop opened in 2001 on the initiative of the Zaraut-Say family.

Visitors can follow the traditional papermaking process: from processing mulberry bark through soaking, grinding, and filtering the fibers to drying and smoothing. The entire process is done by hand using centuries-old methods. The paper quality is excellent, thick and durable, used for calligraphy and fine art work.

The workshop also houses a small museum displaying old documents, a collection of paper samples, and historical papermaking tools. Visitors can try papermaking and purchase handmade paper sheets, journals, and art albums. Products range from small gift items to serious artistic materials.

Museo de Arte Precolombino

One of Cusco’s most elegant museums, housed in a beautiful colonial palace next to Plaza de las Nazarenas.

Opened in 2002, it presents the finest pieces of Peruvian pre-Columbian art in chronological order, from 1250 BC to Spanish conquest. The building itself represents artistic value: the 16th-century Casa Cabrera palace with its beautiful inner courtyards and uncovered Inca wall remains.

The museum’s 11 rooms contain more than 450 artifacts representing the gold, silver, ceramic, and textile art of ancient Peruvian cultures. The collection’s specialty is that it excels not in quantity but quality: every single exhibited item is a masterpiece representing the pinnacle of pre-Columbian art. The Moche culture’s realistic portrait vessels and Nazca ceramic geometric decorations deserve special attention.

One of the most impressive sections is the goldsmith collection, showing how gold became not a store of value but a religious and power symbol in Andean cultures. The museum uses modern exhibition technology: every object receives separate lighting, and detailed explanations aid understanding. The museum restaurant offers excellent international and Peruvian cuisine in beautiful surroundings.

Cusco Regional History Museum

The museum is located in the Garcilazo de la Vega house, which was once Inca Huascar’s palace.

It presents the history of Cusco region from pre-Inca times to modern times, with special emphasis on the colonial period and independence wars. The building itself has historical significance: Garcilaso de la Vega, the famous Inca-Spanish historian, was born here.

The museum boasts a rich painting collection featuring works of the Cusco school. This 16th-18th century artistic movement uniquely combined Spanish Baroque style with Andean motifs. The paintings show angels in Inca noble dress, and European religious scenes take place in Andean landscapes. Works by Diego Quispe Tito and Marcos Zapata are particularly valuable.

Another specialty is the collection of colonial furniture and objects, showing the lifestyle of Spanish nobility in Cusco. The museum preserves original writings and personal items of the revolutionary Tupac Amaru, who led an uprising against Spanish rule in 1780. Among the exhibitions are important documents and maps of the city’s history.

Puka Pukara

The „Red Fortress” is located 7 kilometers from Cusco city, at 3,700 meters above sea level.

This stunning Inca structure was built in the 15th century and presumably served as a military outpost and defense point for the Tambomachay bath complex. It got its name from the reddish rock from which it was built, which takes on particularly spectacular colors at sunset.

The complex consists of terraces, chambers, aqueducts, and storage places, all masterpieces of functional Inca architecture. The fortress is located on three levels and stands in a strategic location: from here there is an excellent view of the valley and all nearby Inca sites. Most of the walls still stand, and the precise fittings and water drainage system elements are clearly visible.

Archaeologists believe that Puka Pukara served not only military purposes but was also a site for religious ceremonies. The complex contains structures that could have served astronomical observations. Beautiful hiking trails start from the site to the surrounding mountains, and it is especially popular at sunrise and sunset when the stones glow in fiery red.

Tambomachay

The „Inca Bath” is one of Cusco’s most mystical and beautiful archaeological sites, just 8 kilometers from the city center.

This 15th-century structure was a sanctuary dedicated to water worship, where Inca nobility performed religious purification ceremonies. The complex’s name means „resting place” in Quechua, indicating that Inca rulers frequently stayed here.

Tambomachay’s main feature is the complex water system that still works today: mountain spring water flows down through decorated stone channels and pools on multiple levels. The water flows in three separate streams, and local legend says each spring has different healing powers. Inca engineers designed the system with such precision that it has never dried up over the centuries.

The sanctuary consists of three terraces supported by monumental stone walls. The top level contains the main temple, the middle has ceremonial pools, and the bottom has ritual baths. The stonework is so fine that the walls feel smooth to touch. The area around Tambomachay remains a sacred place for local shamans, who hold water purification ceremonies here.

Pisac

One of the Sacred Valley’s most beautiful sites, 33 kilometers east of Cusco.

The town consists of two parts: modern Pisac in the valley, famous for its colorful market, and the Inca ruins on the mountaintop, which is one of Peru’s most impressive archaeological complexes. Inca Pisac was a strategically important fortress that dominated the eastern entrance to the Sacred Valley.

The archaeological park includes more than 600 terraces carved into the steep mountainside, still providing a stunning sight today. The terraces were supplied with water by a complex irrigation system, and remains of water reservoirs and channels are still visible. At the complex’s highest point stands the Intihuatana, the „Sun Binder”, a ritual stone used for astronomical observations that still works accurately today.

Modern Pisac town is famous for its traditional market, which opens on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. Here, Quechua families from surrounding villages sell their grown vegetables, fruits, and traditional handicrafts. The market is a paradise of colorful fabrics, alpaca wool products, and ceramics decorated with ancient Inca symbols. Local restaurants serve traditional Andean dishes, including the famous roasted guinea pig.

Moray

One of the Sacred Valley’s most mystical sites, located about 50 kilometers northwest of Cusco.

This special Inca facility is a terrace system of concentric circles that looks like a giant natural amphitheater. The largest of the three main „circuses” is 30 meters deep, and each level creates a different microclimate due to altitude differences.

Archaeologists believe Moray was the Inca empire’s agricultural experimental station, where different plants were tested under various climatic conditions. Between the top and bottom terraces, there can be up to a 15°C temperature difference, allowing simultaneous cultivation of tropical and temperate zone plants. This was a revolutionary agricultural innovation that contributed to the Inca empire’s food self-sufficiency.

The site’s uniqueness comes from each terrace containing different types of soil brought from different regions. Recent research shows that ancestors of more than 3,000 potato varieties can be found here, proving that Moray indeed functioned as an agricultural gene bank. Visitors can still perceive the climate differences between different levels, and the panorama is stunning: the pattern of perfect circles provides a unique sight.

Chinchero

The magical village lies 28 kilometers from Cusco at 3,762 meters altitude, combining Inca heritage with traditional Andean lifestyle.

The colonial temple in the village center rests on Inca foundations, and its walls are covered with frescoes decorated with beautiful flower motifs and religious scenes. The market next to the temple opens on Sundays, where locals still practice barter trade as their ancestors did centuries ago.

Chinchero’s specialty is textile art: local Quechua women still create their colorful fabrics using traditional Inca techniques. In the weaving workshop in the village center, ancient procedures can be viewed: making natural dyes from cochineal insects, plants, and minerals, spinning thread from alpaca and llama wool, and hand-weaving complex patterns. These techniques are unchangingly passed down from mother to daughter.

The village surroundings are encircled with Inca terraces still used for potato and corn cultivation. Among archaeological sites, the royal palace ruins stand out, where legend says Inca Tupac’s summer residence stood. From Chinchero’s viewpoints, a wonderful panorama opens over the Sacred Valley and surrounding snow-capped peaks, including the Salkantay and Veronica mountains.

Cusco weather: when is the best time to travel?

Cusco is located 3,400 meters above sea level, so its climate differs significantly from typical tropical weather. The city has a subtropical mountain climate, where temperature remains relatively constant throughout the year, but there is a significant difference between rainy and dry seasons.

Dry season (May-September):

This period is ideal for travel, when there is barely any precipitation and days are sunny and pleasant. Daytime temperature ranges between 18-22°C, but at night it can drop below 0°C. The sky is clear, providing excellent photography conditions.

Rainy season (November-March):

During this period, afternoon showers and thunderstorms are frequent, but mornings are usually sunny. Temperature is slightly higher, 20-24°C during the day, 5-8°C at night. The landscape is greener and more flourishing, but excursions are weather-dependent.

Transition periods (April, October):

During these months, changeable weather is characteristic, with less rain but variable conditions.

Best time to travel:

The most ideal time to visit Cusco is between May and September, especially from June to August. During this period, precipitation is minimal, sunshine duration is maximum, and temperature is also pleasant. This is peak season, so it’s worth booking accommodations in advance. Kyoto attractions

Fushimi Inari Taisha

One of Kyoto’s most iconic shrines is located at the foot of a mountain. It is dedicated to Inari, the deity of rice, fertility, and wealth.

The shrine’s most famous attraction is the thousands of bright red torii gates that form a winding path up the mountainside. The gates were donated by businesses and individuals, with their names and the date of donation engraved on the sides of the gates.

The area features numerous smaller shrines, statues, and stone lanterns, as well as fox statues, which are considered Inari’s messengers. The path to the mountain top is about 4 kilometers long, and the entire hike takes approximately 2-3 hours. Many people only walk up to the first rest area, which already offers a beautiful view of the city.

Kinkaku-ji

One of Japan’s most beautiful and famous temples, also called the Golden Pavilion due to its walls covered with gold leaf.

The temple, originally built in 1397, was used as a villa by shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and after his death, it was converted into a Zen Buddhist temple. The building combines three different architectural styles: the first floor features palace architecture, the second floor reflects the style of samurai residences, while the upper floor was built in the form of a Zen Buddhist temple. The pavilion is topped with a golden phoenix statue, which symbolizes resurrection and rebirth.

Around the temple is a beautiful Japanese garden designed to offer spectacular views in every season. The gold-plated building reflected in the central pond is one of the most photographed sights in all of Japan. Small islands rise from the pond’s water, symbolizing longevity and immortality.

To-ji Temple

One of Kyoto’s oldest and most important Buddhist temples was founded in 796 when the city was still the capital of Japan.

On the temple grounds stands Japan’s tallest five-story pagoda, reaching 55 meters in height and dominating the skyline from afar. The pagoda’s five levels symbolize the five elements: earth, water, fire, wind, and ether. Inside the building are Buddha statues and paintings depicting Buddhist teachings and stories.

The To-ji temple complex also includes the Kodo (Lecture Hall) and the Kondo (Main Hall), which house valuable Buddha statues. In the garden surrounding the temple is the Kobo-ike pond, where water lilies bloom during the summer months. On the 21st of each month, a traditional market called Kobo-san is held on the temple grounds, where antiques, crafts, and local food specialties can be purchased.

Kyoto Tower

A symbol of modern Kyoto, this 131-meter-high tower offers splendid views of the city.

The tower was built in 1964, the year of the Tokyo Olympics, and has since become one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. The slender, white structure is topped with a red observation dome that resembles a traditional Japanese candle. The tower’s design took into account the city’s historical character, with the steel frame weighing only 800 tons, compared to other towers of similar size.

The observation deck offers a 360-degree panorama of the entire city, and on clear days, you can see all the way to the distant mountains. The tower houses a restaurant, gift shop, and a small museum showcasing the city’s history. A shopping center and a popular bathhouse are located at the base of the tower, making the facility attractive to visitors throughout the day.

Nishiki Market

Kyoto’s gastronomic paradise, often called the „kitchen of the city”, has a history of more than 400 years.

In this covered shopping street, nearly 400 meters long, more than 100 small shops and stalls line up side by side, offering fresh ingredients, traditional Kyoto food specialties, and handcrafted products.

The market’s specialty is that many vendors offer samples of their products, allowing visitors to taste local specialties such as tsukemono (pickles), yuba (tofu skin), or special sweets.

Kiyomizu-dera

This World Heritage site is one of Kyoto’s most spectacular Buddhist temples, built into a hillside and offering unparalleled views of the city.

Founded in 778, the temple’s name means „pure water temple”, referring to the nearby waterfall whose water is considered sacred. The temple’s main building features a huge wooden terrace that extends 13 meters from the hillside, built without using a single nail.

The temple grounds contain numerous subsidiary shrines, including the Jishu Shrine, dedicated to the goddess of love and marriage. Here, there are also two „love stones” placed 18 meters apart – according to legend, those who can walk from one stone to the other with their eyes closed will be lucky in love.

Yasaka Shrine

Located in the heart of Kyoto’s historic Gion district, this more than 1300-year-old Shinto shrine becomes the center of the city especially during the famous Gion Matsuri festival.

The shrine’s main entrance is marked by an impressive red torii gate and two guardian lion statues. The main hall is unique in that it houses three shrines at once: for Susanoo, the god of storms and the sea; his wife, Kushinadahime; and their child, Yahashira-no-mikoto. Believers say these deities protect visitors from illness and misfortune.

The shrine grounds include numerous smaller shrines, pavilions, and a stage where traditional dances and musical performances are held. It offers an especially beautiful sight in the evening when hundreds of lanterns around the shrine create a magical atmosphere.

The shrine is open to visitors 24 hours a day, year-round. It often serves as a starting point for exploring the surrounding Gion district, where traditional geisha culture still thrives.

Gion District

Kyoto’s most distinctive traditional district preserves the atmosphere of old Japan and geisha culture to this day.

It developed in the Middle Ages near the Yasaka Shrine to serve pilgrims coming to the shrine. Today, it is famous for its meticulously preserved machiya-style wooden houses lined along narrow, cobblestone streets. Its most famous part is Hanamikoji Street, where numerous ochaya (teahouses) and okiya (geisha houses) can be found, with characteristic wooden lattice windows and traditional lanterns.

The district offers a particularly impressive sight in evening illumination. Here, one can still see kimono-clad maiko (geisha apprentices) and geiko (geishas) hurrying from one event to another.

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove

This forest, located in western Kyoto at the foot of Mount Arashiyama, is one of Japan’s most enchanting natural attractions.

The bamboo grove path winds among tall, straight bamboos that grow densely next to each other. Due to the natural light effects and atmosphere, the grove is a favorite location not only for tourists but also for filmmakers and photographers.

Several other attractions are nearby, such as the Tenryu-ji temple and its beautiful garden, or the picturesque Togetsukyo Bridge spanning the Katsura River. The Arashiyama district is especially popular in spring during cherry blossom season and in autumn.

Kyoto Gyoen National Garden

The Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, a vast green area in the heart of the city, served as a protective buffer zone for the Imperial Palace for centuries.

The special feature of this 65-hectare park is that it has preserved many elements of traditional Japanese garden architecture. The garden contains about 50,000 trees, including cherry trees, maple trees, and pine trees, which continuously show new faces with the changing seasons.

The Kyoto Imperial Palace is located within the garden. The park is bordered by several gates and crossed by numerous walking paths. Cherry blossom season (sakura) and autumn foliage (momiji) are especially popular periods for visitors.

Kyoto Imperial Palace

This impressive complex was the official residence of Japanese emperors for centuries before the capital was relocated to Tokyo in the late 19th century.

The palace grounds cover approximately 1.3 square kilometers, surrounded by walls and accessible through several gates. The main palace building, the Shishinden Imperial Audience Hall, is particularly impressive, built in traditional Japanese architectural style. Here is also the Takamikura throne, where imperial enthronement ceremonies were held. The rest of the building complex includes the imperial family’s private residence (Seiryo-den), the empress’s quarters (Ko-gosho), and several administrative buildings.

The garden surrounding the palace is carefully maintained and is home to numerous rare plant and tree species. Today, the palace grounds are open to visitors, and regular guided tours provide insight into the daily life of the imperial family and the rich history of the complex.

Nijo Castle

This monumental fortress is a symbol of shogunate power, built in 1603 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. In 1867, the last shogun announced the return of his power to the emperor in this castle, marking the beginning of modern Japan.

The castle grounds are surrounded by two concentric moats and massive stone walls, excellent examples of feudal Japanese defensive architecture. The central building of the complex is Ninomaru Palace, consisting of five separate interconnected buildings. It is famous for its „nightingale floor”, specially designed floorboards that make a sound similar to bird chirping under visitors’ steps, thus warning the residents of intruders.

The palace’s interior is richly decorated with paintings of tigers, leopards, and other noble animals against golden backgrounds, symbolizing the shogun’s power. The garden surrounding the castle is a masterpiece of Japanese garden design, combining various styles and featuring a large pond with islands.

Philosopher’s Path

This picturesque walkway runs between the Ginkaku-ji and Nanzen-ji temples. It got its name because the famous Japanese philosopher Nishida Kitaro regularly walked here while contemplating.

About 500 cherry trees line the path, which offers a beautiful sight in spring during cherry blossom season. The walkway runs along a canal at the foot of the Higashiyama mountains, with a total length of about two kilometers.

There are numerous small shrines, teahouses, and cafes along the route. The Honen-in temple is a particularly popular stopping point, known for its beautiful moss garden and peaceful atmosphere despite its small size.

Ginkaku-ji

This Zen Buddhist temple, officially called Jisho-ji, was an important center of culture and arts during the Muromachi period.

The main building, known as the Silver Pavilion, actually never received the silver covering that was originally planned. The building consists of two levels: the lower level bears the characteristics of traditional Japanese architecture, while the upper level follows the style of Zen Buddhist temples. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that while its exterior appears simple, its interior spaces are richly decorated and house numerous valuable works of art.

The temple garden is one of the masterpieces of Japanese garden design, created by Soami, the renowned artist and garden designer. It has two special elements: the Ginsadan (Silver Sand Terrace), a carefully raked sand mound symbolizing moonlight, and the Kogetsudai (Moon-Viewing Platform), a smaller sand mound that is a miniature replica of Mount Fuji.

Heian Jingu Shrine

This impressive Shinto shrine was built in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Kyoto’s founding.

The shrine’s architectural style recalls the imperial palace of the Heian period, though built at two-thirds of its size. The main entrance is marked by a huge torii gate, one of the largest such structures in Japan, standing 24 meters tall with its vermilion color standing out from afar. The shrine’s main building complex consists of four halls that follow the layout of the imperial palace, with the offering hall (Haiden) and inner shrine (Honden) at its center.

One of its most famous parts is the garden, which consists of four different style sections, each designed according to a specific season. The eastern garden is famous for its cherry blossoms in spring, the southern garden for its irises in summer, the western garden for its lotuses in autumn, and the northern garden for its snow-covered landscape in winter.

Daigo-ji Temple

This Buddhist temple complex, part of the World Heritage, is located in the southeastern part of Kyoto and boasts a history of more than 1200 years.

The temple’s five-story pagoda is Kyoto’s oldest wooden structure, built in 951, and miraculously survived the wars and fires that afflicted the city over the centuries. It houses the so-called Godai Rinju Mandala, one of the most important works of Buddhist art and a treasure of Japanese cultural heritage.

Each level of the pagoda symbolizes a Buddhist element, and its interior spaces house valuable Buddha statues and paintings. The temple complex is divided into two main parts: the lower Shimo-Daigo and the upper Kami-Daigo areas, connected by a mountain path.

It is particularly famous for its beautiful garden, built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of the greatest Japanese warlords of the 16th century. The Sanboin garden was designed to show a different face in each season.

Kurama Village

This picturesque mountain village is located in northern Kyoto at the foot of Mount Kurama. It attracts visitors with its wonderful natural environment, ancient shrines, and famous thermal bath.

Its most famous attraction is Kurama-dera, a Buddhist temple with a history of more than 1200 years. The path to the temple leads up the mountainside via steep stairs, passing several smaller shrines along the way.

From the uppermost part of the temple complex, there is a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. A special feature of Kurama-dera is the shrine of the Sōnten deity, built to honor the deity of love, light, and energy.

Another attraction of Kurama is the famous thermal bath, Kurama Onsen, where visitors can relax in outdoor and indoor pools. Near the village is also the Kibune Shrine, built on the bank of a crystal-clear mountain stream. It is famous for its „water divinations”. These prophecies written on pieces of paper only become visible when the paper is immersed in the shrine’s sacred water.

Samurai Ninja Museum

This special interactive museum takes visitors into the world of legendary Japanese warriors, the samurai and ninjas.

The museum displays numerous original and reconstructed weapons, armor, and martial arts equipment from medieval Japan. Visitors can learn about the history, lifestyle, martial arts techniques, and philosophy of samurai and ninjas. Particularly interesting are the secret ninja tools, such as disguised weapons and special movement equipment.

One of its most popular programs is the live demonstration held several times a day, where trained martial artists showcase elements of samurai swordsmanship and ninja combat techniques. Visitors can handle various types of swords, and the braver ones can even put on traditional costumes.

Kyoto weather: when is the best time to visit?

Kyoto has a temperate climate with four distinct seasons, each giving the city a unique atmosphere.

Spring (March-May):

Spring in Kyoto is a magical period when cherry trees bloom, especially in early April. The average temperature ranges between 10-20°C, and the amount of precipitation gradually increases. The cherry blossom (sakura) period is extremely popular with tourists, so it’s advisable to book accommodation in advance.

Summer (June-September):

Summer is hot and humid, with average temperatures between 25-35°C, and the high humidity can make it feel even hotter. The rainy season (tsuyu) lasts from mid-June to mid-July, when frequent showers can be expected. August is especially hot and humid, but many traditional festivals, including the famous Gion Matsuri, are held during this time.

Autumn (September-November):

Autumn is perhaps the most pleasant season in Kyoto. The weather gradually cools, with average temperatures between 15-25°C, and the amount of precipitation decreases. In mid-November, the foliage of maple trees and ginkgos display spectacular red, orange, and gold colors (momiji), making this period the second most popular tourist season.

Osaka Castle

One of Japan’s most famous and significant historical monuments.

The castle, originally built in 1583, was erected by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of the country’s most important military commanders and political leaders, with the aim of unifying the country. It has been destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout history; its current form was completed in the 20th century, with a modern structure and museum function.

The impressive five-story main building stands on a high stone foundation surrounded by wide moats and massive stone walls. The interior exhibitions display historical documents, weapons, and armor from the Toyotomi era, while the top floor offers breathtaking views of Osaka. The castle surroundings are also special: in spring, the park becomes a magnificent sight with thousands of cherry trees in bloom.

The park around the castle is a popular resting place for both locals and tourists. There are lakes, walking paths, and picnic areas, as well as the Nishinomaru Garden, which is an excellent location for hanami, the tradition of cherry blossom viewing.

Shitennō-ji

The oldest Buddhist temple in Osaka and one of Japan’s most important religious sites.

The temple was founded in 593 by Prince Shōtoku, who played a key role in spreading Buddhism in Japan. Over the centuries, the temple has been rebuilt multiple times, but always following the original layout and style.

The temple consists of a large complex with the pagoda, the main hall (Kondō), and the lecture hall (Kōdō) at its center. The pagoda has five levels and is traditionally a symbol of Buddhism. The inner sanctuary houses a Buddha statue venerated by Prince Shōtoku, while important historical documents and artworks are kept in the surrounding buildings.

Gardens and ponds can be found in the temple grounds. The Gokuraku garden is particularly attractive to visitors as a traditional Japanese garden.

Sumiyoshi Taisha

One of Osaka’s oldest Shinto shrines, dedicated to the Sumiyoshi deities who are the protectors of sailors and travelers.

The building’s uniqueness lies in its traditional Japanese shrine architecture style (Sumiyoshi-zukuri), which has not been influenced by other external factors. One of its most iconic parts is the Taiko-bashi, a red arched bridge that spans the pond at the entrance. The bridge symbolizes purification and entry into the sacred place.

The first day of the new year (Hatsumōde) and the Sumiyoshi Matsuri are particularly popular events. Umeda Sky Building

One of Osaka’s most modern and spectacular architectural wonders.

The skyscraper consisting of two towers was built in 1993, and they are connected by a spectacular floating bridge on the 39th floor. Due to its uniqueness and futuristic design, it has become one of the city’s most iconic attractions.

The Floating Garden Observatory is located on the upper floors and offers a stunning 360-degree panorama of Osaka, especially at sunset and at night when the city lights shine in all their glory. The observatory terrace is open-air.

Tsūtenkaku Tower

The original tower was built in 1912, modeled after the Eiffel Tower in Paris, but it was destroyed during World War II. The current 103-meter-high tower was rebuilt in 1956.

Also known as Kaiyukan, it is one of Japan’s largest and most spectacular marine life centers.

The aquarium’s specialty is showcasing the Pacific Ocean’s ecosystem in huge, impressive water tanks. The most famous attraction is the central tank, where a giant whale shark swims above visitors’ heads.

Mount Eden (Maungawhau)

The 196-meter-high extinct volcanic cone is the city’s highest natural point, offering a stunning panorama of the entire area. Its name in Maori means „mountain covered with whau trees”. The volcanic cone was once the site of a Maori pā, a fortified settlement where the local iwi (tribe) lived.

At the top of the mountain is a huge 50-meter deep crater, which locals consider a sacred place, so walking into it is not allowed. The walk to the lookout is relatively easy and can be completed in 10-15 minutes.

Rangitoto Island

Auckland’s youngest volcanic island, formed approximately 600 years ago as a result of a massive eruption.

The island is located directly in front of the harbor, and its iconic, regular volcanic cone is visible from many points in the city. Today it is a nature reserve, a favorite destination for hikers and nature lovers.

The island can be reached by ferry from downtown Auckland. The most popular activity is the Rangitoto Summit Track, a hike to the summit that takes about an hour to complete. Along the way, black lava fields, native forests, and breathtaking lookout points make the experience unforgettable. From the 259-meter high summit, there is a 360-degree panorama.

One of the island’s specialties is that it is home to New Zealand’s largest pōhutukawa forest. These spectacular red-flowered trees are also known as „New Zealand’s Christmas trees”.

Waiheke Island

The most well-known way to reach the peak is the Peak Tram, a historic funicular railway that has been transporting passengers up the steep hillside since 1888, providing a unique experience. The tram ascends at a 27-degree angle.

At the top is the Sky Terrace 428 viewpoint, from where the city panorama unfolds. The view is particularly beautiful at night, and it is featured in many Hong Kong photos.

Temple Street Night Market

One of Hong Kong’s most famous and busiest night markets, located in the bustling Yau Ma Tei neighborhood of Kowloon.

There is a wide variety of goods to browse and, of course, bargaining is a must! In addition, there are numerous dining options along the market, with smaller restaurants and eateries lining the streets.

Ladies’ Market

The market in the Mong Kok district originally gained fame for its women’s clothing and accessories, but it has grown to offer much more.

The market’s name can be misleading, as you can find not only items catered to women, but almost everything: clothes, bags, shoes, jewelry, watches, toys, electronics, and various souvenirs.

Avenue of Stars

The iconic waterfront promenade is the „Hong Kong’s Hollywood Walk of Fame”.

We can see the statues and handprints of many celebrities, such as Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Anita Mui, who have contributed to the global fame of Hong Kong films. The bronze statue of Bruce Lee is particularly popular.

The promenade is located along the harbor, offering magnificent views of Victoria Harbor and the modern skyscrapers of Hong Kong Island. The sight is most beautiful at night.

Kowloon Park

One of Hong Kong’s largest and most popular parks, spanning 13 hectares.

One of its most popular attractions is the aviary, which is home to numerous local and exotic bird species. The rose garden is one of the most beautiful parts of the park, with a variety of rose species that are particularly impressive in the spring.

1881 Heritage

This historically significant attraction in the Tsim Sha Tsui district uniquely blends the city’s past with the world of modern luxury.

The building complex was once the headquarters of the Marine Police, serving as a police and port security center for nearly a century from 1881. The renovated building ensemble is now one of Hong Kong’s most important cultural monuments and tourist attractions.

At its center is the Time Ball Tower, which once provided time signals to sailors, aiding in their navigation.

Kowloon Walled City Park

The historic park in the Kowloon district was once the site of the notorious Kowloon Walled City.

This district was previously known as the world’s most densely populated area, representing a chaotic, self-governing „city within a city” that was not regulated by either the British or Chinese government. It was demolished in 1993, and this peaceful park was then created.

It is designed in the traditional Chinese garden style of the Qing Dynasty, with beautiful pavilions, waterfalls, lakes, rock gardens, and winding paths.

At the center of the park is a museum that showcases the history of the Walled City through old photos, artifacts, and interactive exhibits. Some original architectural elements of the former city, such as the south gate and the old government office building, have been preserved.

Wan Chai

The district on Hong Kong Island is diverse, with a mix of modern skyscrapers and office buildings, traditional markets, historic buildings, and a vibrant nightlife.

The central location is the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC), which is a hub for the business world. The distinctive building stands on the harbor front, and its glass and steel structure is an iconic element of the city’s modern image.

In terms of history, the Blue House stands out. The residential building, built in the 1920s, is one of the last remaining historic residential buildings in Hong Kong and now functions as a cultural heritage center. In addition, it’s worth visiting the Wan Chai Market, where you can sample local delicacies.

Star Ferry

One of Hong Kong’s oldest and most popular modes of transportation, connecting Hong Kong Island to the Kowloon district across Victoria Harbor since 1888.

It not only provides a quick crossing from one side of the harbor to the other, but also offers stunning views of Hong Kong’s famous skyscrapers, especially at night.

The ferries have retained their classic appearance: green and white paint, wooden floors, and traditional design, evoking the atmosphere of the past. The crossings are frequent, and it only takes a few minutes to reach the other side.

Man Mo Temple

One of Hong Kong’s oldest and most significant Taoist temples, built in 1847, and a special part of its cultural heritage.

It was built in honor of two deities, Man (the god of literature and knowledge) and Mo (the god of war). It is characterized by beautiful traditional Chinese architecture: the building is adorned with ornate, colorful ceramic decorations, carved columns, and intricate patterns.

Its interior is filled with incense spirals hanging from the ceiling, providing a unique visual experience. The temple is often visited by students who seek the help of the Man deity for their studies and exams.

Tian Tan Buddha

One of Hong Kong’s most famous and impressive religious symbols, located on Lantau Island.

The bronze statue of the Big Buddha is 34 meters high and weighs 250 tons, making it one of the world’s largest outdoor, seated Buddha statues. Completed in 1993, the statue is a symbol of peace, faith, and harmony. Visitors must climb 268 steps to reach it.

The statue’s base is the Tian Tan, or the Temple of Heaven, which resembles the famous temple in Beijing, paying homage to Chinese religious and architectural traditions.

Hong Kong Disneyland

As the name suggests, it offers a variety of programs for visitors.

The entertainment complex is located in the eastern part of Lantau Island, in a beautiful setting between the sea and the mountains. The park area consists of five themed areas:

• Main Street, U.S.A.: From the park entrance, visitors can stroll through the atmosphere of an American small town, where they can encounter classic Disney characters, as well as shops and restaurants.

San Francisco attractions

Golden Gate Bridge

Of course, the iconic bridge is first on the list of San Francisco attractions!

It’s the USA’s second-longest suspension bridge at 2.7 km in length, spanning the strait between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay.

Construction began on January 5, 1933, and it opened to pedestrian traffic on May 27, 1937. For 27 years, until the completion of New York’s Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, it was the world’s longest suspension bridge.

It’s definitely worth walking back and forth across the bridge, stopping to admire the city views and the many sailboats. I recommend waiting for sunset here – the illuminated bridge is even more beautiful than during the day.

For an even better view, head up to the hillside at the northern end (Battery Spencer). Many choose this spot for its spectacular panorama.

At the foot of the bridge, there’s a visitor center showing the bridge’s history through pictures and featuring a gift shop.

Cable Car

You can’t leave San Francisco without riding one of the Cable Cars!

The car is moved by a cable running in the tracks, and an operator can control the speed with a lever. There are three lines: Powell/Hyde Cable Car, Powell/Mason Cable Car, and California Cable Car.

Here you can enjoy that classic American movie feeling of riding while holding onto the handle in the doorway. It’s allowed here, and I really enjoyed it. But be careful as the car can pick up speed – it’s quite an experience!

Lombard Street

A famous section of Lombard Street ends at one of the Cable Car stops. Cars can drive down the winding section at low speeds.

It was redesigned in 1922 to make it safer for traffic due to its steepness. Eight sharp hairpin turns were built in, bordered by carefully maintained flower beds and plants.

If you’re driving in the city, don’t miss this! There’s often a line at the top of people waiting to try the sometimes right-angled turns. But if you’re on foot, walking down is also a great experience.

Coit Tower

The tower is located on a hilltop at the eastern end of Lombard Street. The 64-meter tall white concrete tower is a classic example of art deco style.

One of its attractions is the murals inside, created in the 1930s as part of the New Deal program. These were done in social realism style, depicting working-class daily life and the hardships experienced during the Great Depression.

The tower has a glass-windowed observation deck at the top, offering beautiful views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island, among others.

Chinatown

You might not expect it, but San Francisco has the largest Chinese community outside of Asia.

North of Union Square is the Dragon Gate, the symbolic entrance to the neighborhood.

Walking along Grant Avenue in this hilly district, you truly feel transported to a mini China. A series of shops and restaurants await tourists.

Transamerica Pyramid

San Francisco’s most distinctive skyscraper is located in the city’s financial district.

The building was completed in 1972 and stood out for its unique pyramid shape. The 260-meter tall tower was long the city’s tallest building. Originally the Transamerica Corporation headquarters, although the company has since moved to other buildings, the building’s name remains.

It’s not open to the public inside, but a visitor center near the Embarcadero Center showcases the skyscraper’s history and significance.

Alcatraz

The famous prison island has been the setting for numerous films. The notorious gangster Al Capone served his sentence here.

It’s one of the USA’s most visited sites, where the most dangerous criminals were held until 1963. Allegedly, no one ever escaped from here.

On the island, you can enter the cells, dining hall, and isolation units, and walk around the island. It’s worth spending several hours here.

You can reach the island by ferry from Fisherman’s Wharf. The ticket includes both ferry and entrance fees. Definitely buy tickets online and in advance – often weeks or months ahead!

Fisherman’s Wharf

One of San Francisco’s most popular and well-known tourist districts is the harbor area.

It was originally a center for fishermen and sailors, particularly Italian immigrants who lived off fishing for Dungeness crab and other seafood in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The waterfront has numerous restaurants, bars, and shops. It’s paradise for seafood lovers. The crab soup in sourdough bread is particularly famous.

Pier 39

There’s a small shopping area set up at the harbor, but that’s not the main attraction here.

Many sea lions rest at the pier, which you can photograph undisturbed from the designated terrace. It’s interesting to see the mass of animals sunbathing just meters away.

Alamo Square

The square and its surroundings are a delightful spot in the city.

Its unique atmosphere comes from the surrounding historical Victorian buildings that represent the architectural style of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The most famous of these are the Painted Ladies. These vibrantly colored, ornate buildings have become symbols of the city.

Located on a hill, it offers wonderful views of the city center. It’s a popular resting place for both locals and tourists.

Twin Peaks

You can reach San Francisco’s best viewpoint via a winding road. Definitely go up here – the panorama of the city and the Golden Gate Bridge is fantastic.

Unfortunately, you can’t get up by public transport, but you’ll need to walk a few hundred meters up the hillside.

Golden Gate Park

While it doesn’t come close in size, I would compare it to New York’s Central Park in atmosphere and layout.

The east-west park not only has lakes, walking paths, and playgrounds but also houses the California Academy of Sciences and the de Young Museum.

Another well-known section is the botanical garden. The garden is divided into different regions, making you feel like you’re not even in a big city.

Palace of Fine Arts

We jump back to ancient times a bit in this park.

The palace, originally built in 1915, was created as part of the Panama-Pacific International Exhibition celebrating San Francisco’s rebuilding after the 1906 earthquake and fire. It was built in classical ancient Roman and Greek architectural style, with massive Doric columns and an impressive dome.

A small park has been developed, where a small lake and promenade give the area a great atmosphere.

The most populous municipality in the USA, the third most populous in the supercontinent of America. The city has five major boroughs, with Manhattan being the central part. Naturally, most of New York’s attractions are concentrated here, and therefore I’ll divide these according to the borough’s official division into three parts: Lower, Midtown, and Upper Manhattan.

Lower Manhattan

Statue of Liberty

America’s symbol representing freedom and democracy. Few people know that the statue was a gift from the French in 1886 for the centennial of independence.

The 93-meter-tall bronze statue stands at the mouth of the Hudson River on Liberty Island. The interior is accessible, and the view from the crown’s observation deck is fantastic. The museum on the second floor of the pedestal showcases the statue’s history.

After the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack, it was closed to visitors for a long time, but since 2009 it has been open again, although the daily number of visitors is limited.

Staten Island Ferry

If we don’t want to (or couldn’t) go to the island, there’s an excellent view of the statue from the nearby Staten Island Ferry. Be prepared to „fight” for a spot as many people use it.

How to get to the ferry terminals: Take subway line 1 to South Ferry station; R, W trains to Whitehall St South station.

Battery Park

This park is located at the southern tip between skyscrapers and the bay. Here you’ll find the former fortress, Castle Clinton.

The park itself is average; the large crowds are due to the ferries heading to the Statue of Liberty.

Wall Street and the Charging Bull

Who doesn’t know this is the center of financial life! It’s actually not just one street but a district of the financial sector. Wall Street is a side street where the world’s largest stock exchange, the New York Stock Exchange, is located.

On the main street is the famous bull statue (Charging Bull), which is always surrounded by tourists. Why is there a bull at the center of the financial district? Because in the stock market world, the bull is a symbol of rising prices.

Opposite the New York Stock Exchange building is Federal Hall, where George Washington, the first president, took his oath of office. Entry is free!

The Trinity Church parish church in neo-Gothic style is an interesting sight among the skyscrapers.

World Trade Center – Ground Zero

This site commemorates the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The World Trade Center twin towers were New York’s tallest buildings. A metal basin now stands in their place, with the names of victims inscribed around its perimeter. There’s also a museum next to the memorial.

The One World Observatory is located on floors 100-102 of the adjacent One World Trade Center, offering 360-degree views. (This is one of the three main observation decks.)

Washington Square Arch

Located in Washington Square Park, this arch was modeled after Paris’s Arc de Triomphe. Two statues of George Washington stand on the side facing Fifth Avenue.

Access: Take A, B, C, D, E, F, M trains to West 4 St-Washington Square Station, then walk 500m; R, W trains to 8 Street Station, then walk 500m.

Chinatown

Like every metropolis, there’s a large Chinese community here. Approximately 90,000 to 100,000 people live between Canal Street and East Broadway subway stations. This district is the largest Chinese community outside of Asia. It’s worth visiting to walk around and eat.

Access: Take A, C, E, J, N, Q, R, W, Z and 6 trains to Canal Street station.

SoHo

This neighborhood is primarily known for its galleries, cultural centers, and numerous shops, boutiques, and shopping centers.

It’s characterized by its cast-iron architecture, with the largest concentration of such buildings in the world still existing here today.

Access: Take C, E trains to Spring St station; R, W trains to Prince St station.

Brooklyn Bridge

The world’s first steel cable bridge connects Brooklyn to Manhattan. The bridge has two levels, with the upper level reserved for pedestrians and cyclists.

It’s worth walking across from the Brooklyn side during daylight and sunset, then admiring Manhattan’s illuminated skyscrapers.

Access: On Brooklyn side, take A, C trains to High Street-Brooklyn Bridge station; on Manhattan side, take 4, 5, 6 trains to Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall station.

Midtown Manhattan

Broadway

The famous theater district is located between 40th and 54th Streets, on the city’s oldest north-south avenue.

The world knows it primarily as the center of American theater life, a cultural hub that attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists annually.

Times Square

Times Square is located at the intersection of 46th-47th Streets and Broadway.

The flashing lights and advertisements provide an impressive sight – definitely visit after dark! On New Year’s Eve, this is where they drop the iconic, huge crystal ball.

Although we might say it’s just a square, it’s still one of the best New York attractions. Just sit in the square at night and feel the atmosphere of the world’s most famous intersection.

Empire State Building

One of the city’s most famous buildings got its name from New York state’s nickname (Empire State). On holidays, its top glows in colored lights, attracting even larger crowds.

The building features the city’s highest open observation deck, offering magnificent panoramic views of the city. The South Manhattan skyscrapers provide an especially beautiful view. The 86th floor is the open section, while the 102nd floor is enclosed.

Flatiron Building

Located at the intersection of 23rd Street, Fifth Avenue, and Broadway. The building got its name from the triangular plot it was built on, which resembles an old-style iron.

It offers an interesting sight – sit on the chairs at the edge of Madison Square Park opposite and enjoy the panorama!

Access: Take R, W trains to 23 Street station.

Grand Central Terminal

Perhaps the world’s most famous railway station, which is the largest in the world by number of platforms.

However, it’s most famous for its main concourse, with frescoes depicting zodiac signs on the ceiling. It’s a popular film shooting location.

Access: Take 4, 5, 6, 7 trains to Grand Central-42 Street station.

Chrysler Building

The distinctive Art Deco skyscraper is 319 meters tall and was commissioned by Walter P. Chrysler.

After its completion in 1930, it held the title of „world’s tallest building” for eleven months and remains the world’s tallest brick building, although it has an internal steel frame.

Car-related symbols were used as decorative elements (such as a car radiator cap), which appear on the setback friezes at the tower’s base and other parts of the building.

Access: 200 meters walk from Grand Central Terminal.

Rockefeller Center

A complex of 19 towers named after John D. Rockefeller Jr., who built it in 1931.

It houses perhaps the world’s most famous ice rink, „The Rink at Rockefeller Center,” in front of which stands the famous Prometheus statue. This is also where they set up the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, whose lights are lit by New York City’s mayor in a televised ceremony.

The building’s top features the Top of the Rock observatory, which some say offers the best view (of the three main observatories). This is because it provides a broader view of the southern area and the famous Empire State Building is in the foreground.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral

New York City’s largest and most famous Roman Catholic church is located on Fifth Avenue, opposite Rockefeller Center.

The cathedral is an iconic example of American Neo-Gothic architecture and opened its doors to worshippers in 1879. The building was designed by James Renwick Jr., who drew inspiration from French and English Gothic churches.

Its impressive architectural elements include the tall, soaring twin towers that rise over 100 meters high. The intricately detailed facade is adorned with beautiful rose windows and carved stone elements. The interior space is enormous and can accommodate up to 3,000 people at once.

Madame Tussauds

I think everyone knows that this wax museum displays life-size wax figures of famous people. After London, this is the most popular one in the world.

It showcases more than 200 lifelike wax figures: historical figures, politicians, athletes, pop culture icons. Who wouldn’t want to meet Brad Pitt, Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, or Dwayne „The Rock” Johnson!?

Various themed exhibitions are also on display, such as Marvel Super Heroes and Ghostbusters. Additionally, there are several 4D cinemas here.

UN Headquarters

The United Nations headquarters stands on the east side, along the East River.

The High Line

This is a 2.3 km elevated walkway that runs from the intersection of West 14th Street and Gansevoort Street to West 34th Street.

The West Side Line elevated railway used to run here, and some tracks are still visible today. It’s worth walking along it; at the northern end, there’s a great view of the Hudson River and Jersey.

Between 15th and 16th Streets is Chelsea Market, home to numerous artisanal products and market food stalls.

Access: Southern end – take A, C, E trains to 14 Street station, then walk 600m; Northern end – take 7 train to 34 Street-Hudson Yards station, then walk 300m.

Central Park

The world’s most famous park extends lengthwise through Manhattan’s territory. It separates the upper and middle sections. It has been a location for many films and is popular with both locals and tourists. Playgrounds, sports fields, lakes, large grassy areas, and an ice rink in winter serve for recreation.

Although it’s about 5 km to walk between its two endpoints, it’s still worth spending time and energy as there are attractions in every section.

It’s easily accessible from almost every side, with 9 subway stations located around the park’s edges.

The Central Park Zoo is in the southeastern part. It’s not large, but it’s known for its location and the Madagascar Penguins animated series.

Further north is The Mall and Literary Park walkway, which is a true horticultural gem. The American elms here are among the last specimens in North America, making it a popular walking spot due to their appearance.

The walkway leads to the most famous spot, the Bethesda Terrace and Fountain area. This appears in most films shot here.

You can go boating on The Lake. East of the lake stands the famous Alice in Wonderland statue.

The Reservoir occupies most of the central area. You’ll see many runners and joggers here.

In the eastern part of the northern section, it’s worth seeing the Conservatory Garden. This resembles a botanical garden with well-maintained plants.

Roosevelt Island Tramway

An aerial tram runs between Roosevelt Island and the corner of 2nd Avenue/E 60 Street, which can be used with public transportation tickets and passes.

It’s worth starting from the island, as it offers excellent views of Manhattan.

Upper Manhattan

Harlem

Anyone who’s heard of this neighborhood has probably heard of it in a negative context. It’s worth visiting not for the attractions but for the atmosphere. Just be careful not to wander here at night.

I walked along 125th Street; there were many vendors, some quite „pushy” with tourists. Don’t let yourself be pressured, politely decline their offers.

However, there is one specific place to visit: a church service, known from films for its dancing and music (gospel). Several churches welcome visitors; schedule it for a Sunday morning! Important note: don’t be afraid, the locals are very kind and friendly.

The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine

It has an interesting history: construction began in the late 19th century but is still not completely finished. However, when completed, it will be the world’s largest cathedral. It functions not only as a church but also houses a theater and school.

Sydney Opera House

The first thing everyone thinks of about the city is the iconic building of the Opera House. In 2007, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The design was inspired by Sydney’s huge yacht harbor and the sails often seen there. The opera house was designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon and inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II on October 20, 1973.

This opera house has the world’s largest stage curtain, and the organ in the concert hall is the world’s largest mechanical organ.

However, there are not only theatrical performances: five more halls are available for other events. The building also houses a cinema and a restaurant.

Sydney Harbour Bridge

Australia’s most famous bridge, spanning over Sydney Harbour, connecting the city center with the area called North Shore.

The structure, with its impressive dimensions and distinctive arched shape, is not only an iconic attraction of the city but also one of the world’s largest steel arch bridges. It is suitable for road, rail, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic. It is approximately 1,149 meters long, and its arch is 134 meters high above the water surface.

Its tourist popularity is not just because of this. The bridge offers a very good view of the harbor, the Opera House, and the zoo.

Sydney Tower

The 305-meter-high tower is the tallest building in the city and Australia.

At the top of the tower is an observation deck, which is about 250 meters high. From here, there is a 360-degree panorama of Sydney and the surrounding landscape. One part of the tower is a revolving restaurant, the 360 Bar and Dining.

The Rocks

The area of historical streets lying in the shadow of the Sydney Harbour Bridge is the oldest quarter of the city.

It has existed since the founding of Sydney and is a key site in Australian colonial history. The original name of the quarter refers to the rocky soil that characterizes the area. In the 19th century, the area became an industrial center where shipyards, warehouses, and shops operated.

There are several popular galleries here, many old Sydney pubs, and many elegant restaurants with views of the harbor. It regularly hosts various cultural events and festivals, such as Vivid Sydney.

Hyde Park

Sydney’s largest and oldest park spans 16 hectares in the center.

It was originally colonial land where the city’s first residents, soldiers, and settlers lived. The park was named after Hyde Park in London. Due to its beauty and historical significance, it is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike.

It also houses the war heroes and veterans memorial, ANZAC, and the beautiful St. Mary’s Cathedral stands on its eastern side.

The Intersection Paddington

In the Paddington district, Oxford Street is the street of elegant shops and boutiques.

The street is very atmospheric, with many famous shops located in colorful buildings.

Queen Victoria Building

The beautiful building now functions as a shopping center.

It was built in 1898 in neo-Romanesque style at the end of the Victorian era to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s reign. Originally a market and exhibition hall, it served various functions over the years, including city council offices and a library. In the late 1980s, it was converted into a shopping center.

The central part of the building features a huge copper-covered dome 20 meters in diameter, which is an impressive sight from the outside. Its mosaic-covered floors and colorful stained glass windows are also outstanding.

Two of its clocks are particularly interesting. The Royal Clock shows scenes from Queen Victoria’s life and reign every hour. The Great Australian Clock depicts 33 scenes from Australian history, and a mechanical figure goes through each scene.

Taronga Zoo

Thanks in part to its wonderful location, the over 100-year-old zoo is an unmissable program in Sydney.

Its name comes from the local indigenous language, meaning „beautiful view”. This perfectly describes the zoo’s location on the shores of Sydney Harbour.

The zoo is divided into 8 regions over 28 hectares. It is home to more than 4,000 animals and showcases more than 350 different species. The zoo houses local Australian animals as well as exotic species from all over the world.

A special program at the zoo, Roar and Snore, is an overnight camping opportunity on the zoo grounds. Visitors can participate in a guided night tour, getting to know the nocturnal animals, and then wake up to the view of Sydney Harbour the next morning.

It is easily accessible from downtown Sydney: the most popular route is the ferry from Circular Quay, which arrives directly at the zoo entrance.

The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney

Australia’s oldest botanical garden is located next to the ferry terminal, with many beautiful exotic plants.

It was founded in 1816 by Governor Lachlan Macquarie for agricultural research purposes, to study and cultivate various plant species. Over the years, the garden has continuously expanded and is now considered one of the world’s most significant botanical gardens.

It has several themed sections, such as The Sydney Fernery, Palm House, South African Garden, and Cactaceae Garden.

Darling Harbour

The waterfront area used to be an industrial dock, but today it has become one of the city’s favorite relaxation spots.

There are many cafes, bars, and restaurants in this area, making it a must-visit among Sydney’s attractions. It also hosts many large-scale events. The two opposite sides are connected by a pedestrian bridge, the Pyrmont Bridge.

The Chinese Garden of Friendship is a quiet resting place with small waterfalls and beautiful plants. It’s definitely worth spending some time here!

The Maritime Museum and the Aquarium are also located in this area.

Bondi Beach

Sydney’s most popular beach area, where you can also enjoy the view on a 6 km Coogee coastal walk. The beach is about one kilometer long and serves as a constant tourist attraction.

The golden sandy beach is also a surfers’ paradise, but of course, those who want to swim can also find suitable beach sections.

Hanoi is located in the northern part of the country, close to Halong Bay. From 1954 to 1976, it was the capital of North Vietnam, and from the 11th century until 1802, with minor interruptions, it was the capital of Vietnam.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

One of Hanoi’s most famous and visited sites, it is a significant historical monument for the Vietnamese. The mausoleum houses Ho Chi Minh’s embalmed body in a glass coffin.

Ho Chi Minh was not only an iconic figure of the Vietnamese independence movement but also the unifier of the country and the founder of the socialist state. Construction began two years after his death in 1971 and was completed in 1975. It was built following the model of Lenin’s Mausoleum in Moscow but also reflects Vietnamese traditions.

Entry is free, but visitors must wear respectful attire (covered shoulders and knees) and remain silent inside the building. Photography and videography are strictly prohibited inside the mausoleum.

Ho Chi Minh Museum

The museum showcases Ho Chi Minh’s life, work, and the history of the Vietnamese independence struggle.

It contains numerous personal items associated with Ho Chi Minh, including his clothes, manuscripts, books, and everyday objects. Some parts of the museum also contain symbolic exhibitions that focus not only on historical events but also on the symbolic significance of Ho Chi Minh’s ideas and personality.

Presidential Palace

The government building used for official purposes has symbolic significance in Vietnamese history and Ho Chi Minh’s life.

Built between 1900 and 1906 for the French colonial government, it originally served as the official residence of the Governor of French Indochina. Its color is a vibrant yellow, which is a characteristic feature of French colonial architecture in Vietnam.

Today, it still serves mainly official government purposes. International delegations are received here, and important diplomatic events are held. The interior of the palace is not open to tourists, but the garden and surrounding buildings are.

After independence in 1945, Ho Chi Minh became the country’s first president. Although he was officially supposed to live here, he decided to live in a much more modest wooden house next to a small pond in the garden. This house can be visited, where we can see the objects and furniture used at that time.

The garden surrounding the palace is full of various plants and trees from different parts of Vietnam. The garden is a pleasant place for a walk.

Hoan Kiem Lake

Located in the center of Hanoi, it is one of the most popular tourist and cultural attractions, as well as an important community space for the city’s residents.

Its name means „Lake of the Returned Sword”, named after a legend. According to this, in the 15th century, when King Le Loi successfully liberated Vietnam from the rule of the Chinese Ming dynasty, a golden turtle appeared in the lake and reclaimed the magical sword that the king had used for victory. Le Loi returned the sword, and the golden turtle disappeared into the depths of the lake.

The area around the lake is beautifully landscaped with lush vegetation and trees, making for pleasant walking paths.

Thap Rua (Turtle Tower)

This structure was erected on a small island in Hoan Kiem Lake to commemorate the above legend. Its name means Turtle Tower.

It was built at the end of the 19th century during the French colonial period. It was initiated by local authorities and a wealthy official named Nguyen Ngoc Kim. The structure is three stories high and made of characteristic stone.

It is located on the largest island in the lake, but the island is so small that the tower almost completely occupies it. The island cannot be accessed directly, so visitors can only admire it from the lake shore. It is illuminated at night, making the view even more beautiful.

Ngoc Son Temple

One of Hanoi’s most important religious attractions is located on a small island in the northern part of Hoan Kiem Lake. It is named after its island, which means Jade Mountain.

The temple was originally a sacred place of Buddhist and Taoist faith, dedicated to Van Xuong, the patron saint of Vietnamese sciences, and the famous general Tran Hung Dao, who successfully led Vietnamese forces against the Mongols in the 13th century.

The temple buildings were constructed in traditional Vietnamese style, richly decorated with red and gold motifs. There are several pavilions and shrines where visitors can light candles and place incense.

The temple is connected to the lake shore by a famous red-painted wooden bridge, the Thue Huc Bridge. The bridge’s arched shape and vivid color make it a popular photography spot.

Old Quarter

This part of the city has a history spanning several centuries and is one of the best places to experience Vietnamese culture, history, and everyday life.

The Old Quarter was established as early as the 13th century and was originally the center of the city’s craft guilds. Each street was home to a particular craft, which is why the street names are often associated with trades, such as „Silver Street” (Hang Bac) or „Paper Street” (Hang Ma).

It consists of 36 streets that are narrow, chaotic, and extremely busy. Most of the buildings are traditional, narrow, long houses called „tube houses.” These architectural solutions were developed due to high land prices, and the buildings often serve as homes for multi-generational families. Shops or workshops are often found on the ground floor, while apartments are on the upper floors.

Train Street (Đường Tàu)

One of Hanoi’s most famous and unique attractions is a small street in the Old Quarter where a train runs through.

The railway line runs directly between residential buildings, and the streets are so narrow that when trains pass, people have to press themselves against the walls of buildings. At such times, street vendors quickly pack up their things to allow the train to pass. After the train passes, life returns to normal.

Bach Ma Temple

Located in the Old Quarter, this building is one of Hanoi’s oldest and most significant temples.

Its name means „White Horse”, which comes from a legend. According to this, the temple was dedicated to the city’s guardian spirit, a white horse that helped King Lý Thái Tổ lay the foundations of the Thang Long Citadel (later Hanoi).

Its architectural style follows traditional Vietnamese forms, richly decorated with carvings and colorful dragon and horse motifs. In the central part of the temple, there is an altar dedicated to the spirit of the white horse.

Thăng Long Imperial Citadel

This over 1000-year-old citadel is one of the most important monuments of Vietnamese history, which was the center of numerous dynasties. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 2010.

It was built in the 7th century but gained its true significance during the Lý dynasty in 1010. At that time, King Lý Thái Tổ named the city Thăng Long and established the capital here. During the French colonial period, part of the fortress was demolished, but the remaining parts are still important historical monuments today.

Its most significant part is the flag tower. The 33-meter high tower is topped with a Vietnamese flag, which is a symbol of national pride. The tower was built in 1812 and survived the destruction of both the French and American wars.

The Kinh Thien Palace was the center of the citadel, where important ceremonies were held. Although the palace no longer stands, the remaining foundations of the site can still be seen today. The impressive Doan Mon Gate was one of the main gates used by the royal family and high-ranking officials. The Cua Bac Gate is the northern gate of the citadel, which is one of the best-preserved gates from the citadel’s original structure.

Temple of Literature

This complex of buildings is one of the symbols of Vietnamese science, education, and Confucian philosophy.

It was founded in 1070 by King Lý Thánh Tông, originally dedicated to Confucius and his disciples to honor the Chinese philosopher and teacher. Six years later, Vietnam’s first university was founded here.

Its architectural style also shows Chinese influences. The temple consists of five separate courtyards. The first courtyard symbolizes peace and harmony. In the third courtyard is the famous Khuê Văn Các, a red-painted pavilion that is a symbol of scientific excellence. In the fifth courtyard is the main temple, where Confucius and his four most important disciples are worshipped. On the altars stands a statue of Confucius.

West Lake (Tây Hồ)

Located in the western part of the city, it is surrounded by numerous important historical, cultural, and religious sites.

With an area of about 500 hectares, it is Hanoi’s largest lake. Promenades and resting places have been built around the lake, making it an excellent location for walks. From the shore, there is a beautiful view of the city.

Tran Quoc Pagoda

Hanoi’s oldest Buddhist pagoda, located on a small peninsula on the southern shore of West Lake.

The original pagoda was built in the 6th century, but due to a flood, it was moved to its current location in the 17th century. With the support of Vietnamese rulers, it remained one of the centers of Buddhist teachings for a long time. Over the centuries, the pagoda was rebuilt and expanded several times, making it an impressive architectural monument today.

The main building of the pagoda is an 11-story tower made of red brick, standing 15 meters tall. The structure of the building is reminiscent of Buddhist sacred mountains, and each floor contains a Buddha statue. At the top of the tower is a lotus flower symbol. There are several shrines and altars on the grounds dedicated to Buddha and other religious figures.

One Pillar Pagoda

This small Buddhist shrine is famous for its unique architecture, as it is built on a single pillar that resembles a blooming lotus.

According to legend, it was built by Emperor Lý Thái Tông in 1049. The story goes that the emperor had no children, and in a dream, he saw the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara sitting on a lotus, who gave him a son. Soon after, the emperor’s son was born, and in gratitude, the emperor had this pagoda built in the shape of a lotus flower.

The pagoda is a small wooden structure supported by a single stone pillar and is located in the middle of an artificial pond where lotus flowers grow. It has an ornate roof decorated with traditional Vietnamese carvings and Buddha statues. Inside is a statue of the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara.

Hoa Lo Prison Museum

It showcases the dark chapters of the city’s French colonial past and the period of the Vietnam War.

During the colonial period, the prison held political prisoners under terrible conditions. In the 1960s, the North Vietnamese government held American military pilots here. They nicknamed the place „Hanoi Hilton.” One of the most famous prisoners was John McCain, later a United States Senator and presidential candidate.

The museum was opened in 1993. Most of the prison was demolished, but the remaining parts were restored to show its original condition. We can see prison cells, torture instruments, and exhibitions about different periods.

Opera House

The building, which is an impressive legacy of the French colonial era, must be highlighted.

It was built by the French in the early 20th century to provide a place for cultural events and performances for the French community. The Paris Garnier Opera House served as a model.

The building is in neoclassical and baroque style, with its most beautiful part being the staircase. Its interior halls are decorated with ornate gilded carvings, elegant chandeliers, and painted ceilings.

St. Joseph’s Cathedral

Hanoi’s largest Catholic church was built during the French colonial period.

It is a typical example of Gothic architectural style, built mainly on the model of Notre Dame in Paris. The church has colorful stained glass windows, and its two towers are 31 meters high. Its organ is one of the largest in the country.
