Sagrada Família (Barcelona)

For me, this is the most beautiful church in the world. It’s a must-see attraction from the inside for anyone visiting Barcelona!

It was designed by the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, who played a role in many of the city’s buildings. Construction began in 1882 and is progressing extremely slowly due to the complexity of the plans. Work is still ongoing, and when completed, it will be the largest basilica in the world.

Its length from the apse to the northern end is 90 meters and it’s 45 meters wide. Its interior height reaches 75 meters. Features of several styles can be found. The architects before Gaudí designed a neo-Catalan building, which is a type of neo-Gothic style. Gaudí himself further developed it in the spirit of modernism.

St. Peter’s Basilica (Vatican)

The largest and most significant church of the Roman Catholic Church, and also the seat of the papacy. The basilica is one of the holiest sites in Christianity and attracts millions of pilgrims and tourists annually.

The original church was built around 324 during the reign of Emperor Constantine I, above the tomb of Saint Peter the Apostle. Construction of the current basilica began in 1506 under Pope Julius II and was completed in 1626 under Pope Urban VIII. Many famous Renaissance and Baroque artists and architects participated in the construction, including Bramante, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Bernini.

St. Peter’s Square is located in front of the basilica, designed by Bernini. The square is surrounded by two semicircular colonnades. Inside, there are numerous artistic creations, including Michelangelo’s Pietà.

Seville Cathedral

One of Spain’s most significant and impressive buildings, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

It is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and the third-largest church in the Christian world. The 15th-century cathedral was built on the site of a former Moorish mosque, some elements of which were incorporated into the new structure.

Its outstanding feature is the 104-meter-high Giralda tower. The cathedral’s bell tower was originally the minaret of the Moorish mosque. On top of it is a 4-meter-high bronze statue, the „Giraldillo”.

St. Paul’s Cathedral (London)

The cathedral of the Anglican Diocese of London and an important symbol of English national identity.

The current cathedral is the fifth on the site; its predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. Construction of the new one began in 1675 based on Sir Christopher Wren’s designs and was completed in 1711.

The cathedral’s most famous feature is the dome. Inside, 30 meters high, is the Whispering Gallery. It’s famous for its special acoustics: a whisper along the wall can be clearly heard on the opposite side of the gallery.

Many famous personalities rest in the crypt, including Admiral Nelson, the Duke of Wellington, and Sir Christopher Wren.

Wat Arun (Bangkok)

One of Bangkok’s most iconic and beautiful Buddhist temples is located on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River, opposite the Royal Palace.

Its name means „Temple of Dawn”, referring to the sight of the first rays of the rising sun glinting off the temple’s decorations. Much of these come from Chinese porcelain plates and cups.

The central pagoda is a Khmer-style tower that symbolizes Mount Meru in Hindu-Buddhist cosmology. At its base are statues depicting mythological creatures and demons. We can climb to different levels of the tower via a steep staircase, offering a wonderful view.

Milan Cathedral

The symbol of Milan is one of the masterpieces of Italian Gothic architecture.

Its construction lasted nearly six centuries, from 1386 until the end of the 19th century. The cathedral is the third-largest Catholic church in the world. From its roof, there’s a beautiful view of the city and the Alps on clear days.

Its exterior is decorated with more than 3,400 statues depicting saints, biblical figures, and mythological creatures. The roof of the church is crowned by 135 stone spires, the highest of which is the 108.5-meter main tower, topped by the famous „Madonnina” statue.

Hagia Sophia (Istanbul)

One of the most outstanding works of Turkish architecture and a symbol of Istanbul.

Originally built as a Christian church in 537 during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, it was the largest church in the world for nearly a thousand years. Under Turkish rule, it was a mosque, then a museum, and since 2020, it has been functioning as a mosque again.

Its two distinctive features are the dome and the minarets. The nearly 56-meter-high dome has 40 windows. The mosque has four minarets that were added to the building during Ottoman rule. Their height and style differ slightly, reflecting the different times of their construction.

Notre-Dame (Paris)

One of the most well-known among the numerous iconic buildings of the French capital.

The cathedral is an outstanding example of French Gothic architecture, particularly famous for its western facade, which features two monumental towers, rich sculptural decoration, and a large rose window.

Many people don’t know that Notre-Dame’s organ is a huge musical treasure. Many consider Notre-Dame’s 113-register, five-manual grand organ to be one of the best instruments in the world.

The reconstruction of the temple, which was severely damaged in the 2019 fire, is fortunately nearing its end, so it will soon reopen its doors to visitors.

Golden Temple (India)

Officially named Harmandir Sahib, the holiest site of the Sikh religion is located in the Indian city of Amritsar.

It got its name from its upper level covered in gold, which was donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the 19th century. The temple is located in the middle of an artificial lake, the Amrit Sarovar, accessed by a long marble bridge. The building’s four entrances symbolize that it’s open to people of all castes, religions, and nationalities.

Part of the complex is a huge community kitchen, the Langar, where free food is served daily to up to 100,000 pilgrims and visitors.

Cologne Cathedral

The construction of this Gothic cathedral lasted for several centuries, from 1248 to 1880. This resulted in a monumental church.

It’s Germany’s largest Gothic church and the world’s third-tallest cathedral, with twin towers reaching 157 meters high. Its interior is also impressive: it has five naves, and the vault of the main nave is 43 meters high.

The cathedral houses numerous artistic treasures, including the Shrine of the Three Kings, one of the most significant goldsmith works of the Middle Ages. The building has 10,000 square meters of stained glass windows, many of which are original, medieval creations. The western facade of the cathedral is particularly impressive, with its richly decorated portals and rose window.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral (New York)

The Big Apple isn’t famous for its churches, but this one definitely stands out!

Located in the heart of Manhattan on Fifth Avenue, opposite the Rockefeller Center. The cathedral is impressive in its size: 123 meters long, 53 meters wide, and the towers reach 100 meters high. The building is made of white marble, creating a contrast with the surrounding skyscrapers.

The building contains 21 altars and 19 bells and can accommodate 2,200 people. It has been the site of many significant events, including the funeral service for President Kennedy’s brother, Robert F. Kennedy, in 1968.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque (Abu Dhabi)

The most impressive building in the capital of the United Arab Emirates is named after the country’s first president, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

The mosque is built of white Greek and Macedonian marble, decorated with gold, semi-precious stones, crystals, and ceramics. The main building is crowned by 82 domes, the largest of which is 85 meters high and 32.8 meters in diameter. It can accommodate up to 40,000 worshippers at once.

The mosque’s courtyard is lined with 1,000 columns, each decorated with intricate floral mosaic patterns. Inside the building is the world’s largest hand-woven carpet, covering an area of 5,700 square meters and weighing 47 tons. A huge chandelier hangs in the main prayer hall, weighing 12 tons and decorated with Swarovski crystals.

Salt Lake Temple (Salt Lake City)

One of the most important buildings of the Mormon Church is located in the capital of Utah.

The temple was built in Neo-Romanesque style, with granite walls up to 2.7 meters thick. The building is 68 meters high and has six towers, the tallest of which is 64 meters, topped with a gilded statue of the Angel Moroni.

Its peculiarity is that – unlike many other religious buildings – only members of the Mormon Church who meet certain church requirements can enter. Nevertheless, it’s definitely worth seeing as it’s an impressive sight from the outside as well.

Senso-ji Temple (Tokyo)

One of the oldest and most famous Buddhist temples, which legend says was founded in 628.

The complex consists of several buildings, including the main hall, a five-story pagoda, and numerous smaller shrines. The main hall houses the temple’s holiest object, the Kannon statue, which is kept hidden from public view.

It’s the site of numerous festivals and celebrations, including the famous Sanja Matsuri in May. The temple is particularly spectacular in spring when the cherry trees are in bloom, and at night when the buildings are illuminated.

New York, Empire State Building

First, let’s mention the „capital of the world” where you can choose from several observation decks.

The building has the city’s highest open-air observation deck, offering a magnificent panorama of the city. The skyscrapers of South Manhattan provide a beautiful sight, and on the other side, Central Park is also breathtaking.

There are two observation points in the building: the 86th floor is the open-air part, while the 102nd floor is enclosed.

Dubai, Burj Khalifa

Dubai is synonymous with luxury and desert skyscrapers, so it is a must to see it from above.

The 160-story tower, narrowing stepwise upwards, with its 828-meter height, is the tallest building in the world.

The enclosed observation deck is on the 124th floor, offering a fantastic view of the city and the sea. I suggest going up just before sunset and waiting for it there. An unforgettable sight!

Singapore, Marina Sands Bay

Singapore is a real curiosity in Asia, as modernity and Asian culture perhaps come together best here.

The Marina Bay Sands has a unique appearance: its three buildings are connected at the top with a boat-shaped part.

At the top, on the 57th floor, there is an observation deck, the Sands Skypark, offering a fantastic view of the city. It’s especially worth going at sunset when the city buildings start to light up.

Kuala Lumpur, Menara KL Tower

In Malaysia’s capital, many would surely go up to the Petronas Twin Towers observation deck. However, I recommend the Menara, as it offers a stunning view of the Petronas Towers (especially when lit up)!

There are two observation decks: an enclosed one (Observation deck) and an open one (Sky deck).

Interestingly, there’s an annual competition to see who can reach the top via the stairs the fastest. You can give it a try!

Paris, Montparnasse Tower

In Paris, many dream of the view from the Eiffel Tower, but I suggest something even better.

This is a 210-meter high, 59-story office building with a glass-walled terrace on top where we can admire Paris.

From the top of the tower, you can see several of Paris’s landmarks, such as the Louvre Museum, the Sacré-Cœur Basilica, and of course, the Eiffel Tower. The view after sunset is also fantastic!

Tokyo, Tokyo Skytree

It’s worth seeing Japan’s capital from above, where the bustling energy is palpable even from here.

With its height of 634 meters, it is the tallest artificial structure in Japan and also the tallest freestanding tower (and the second tallest building) in the world.

There are two levels open to visitors: the Tembo Deck (350 meters) and the Tembo Galleria (450 meters).

Grand Canyon Skywalk

If you’ve seen a picture of the Grand Canyon, you might think it was taken on Mars. A few years ago, I said the same thing to myself while sitting on a cliff, gazing at the endless landscape!

If you want the best view, you should visit the Skywalk!

This is a horseshoe-shaped glass bridge that extends almost 1,220 meters above the canyon. It can be a spine-chilling experience to look down through the glass floor into the depths…

Hong Kong, Victoria Peak

You’ve probably seen photos of Hong Kong’s skyscrapers and harbor from above. That’s the view from Victoria Peak.

At the top of the peak is the Peak Tower, accessible by a mountain railway. Many say that from the 552-meter-high summit, Hong Kong offers one of the most beautiful panoramas of any city.

Perhaps this is the place where it’s a must to come at night, as it provides the best opportunity to photograph the illuminated skyscrapers!

Rio de Janeiro, Christ the Redeemer Statue

Brazil’s most famous statue and symbol offers the city’s most beautiful panorama.

From the statue with outstretched arms, standing on a 710-meter-high mountain, you can truly see why Rio is a bucket-list destination. The skyscrapers of the city in the foreground, and the bay and mountains in the background, create a postcard-worthy experience!

Rio hosts perhaps the most famous carnival in the world!

I think this is the viewpoint where everyone would like to relax and admire the view for a very long time!

From the height of 661 meters in the middle of the island, you can look down at the stunning blue ocean, the visibly large coral reefs, and the luxurious overwater villas.

Reaching the mountain peak is not easy, but the view from the top is worth every drop of sweat!

Louvre (Paris)

Who hasn’t heard of perhaps the world’s most famous museum!? The museum has been open to the public since 1793!

It is home to countless artworks. In addition to its European fine arts collection, it also features Egyptian, Eastern, Islamic, Greek, Etruscan, and Roman exhibits.

The iconic glass pyramid in front of the museum is made of 673 glass panes and stands 21 meters high.

The best museums in Paris

American Museum of Natural History (New York)

Located next to Central Park, this museum houses a collection of approximately 32 million items in its 45 halls, making it one of the world’s largest museums in this field.

Its exhibits on early humans, dinosaurs, and North American Native Americans are very popular, but the museum covers many other areas as well.

I had the opportunity to visit in 2018, and I can confidently recommend it for both children and adults!

Located on the southern side of Tiananmen Square, this is the largest museum in the world. It features traditional Chinese architecture with a pagoda roof and yellow glazed tiles.

Uffizi Gallery (Florence)

Founded in 1581, the museum’s building was designed by the Medici family’s famous architect, Giorgio Vasari. It can be safely said that this is the world’s most famous art gallery.

As its name suggests, it has a significant collection of paintings, but it also possesses invaluable ancient sculptures and a tapestry collection.

Some of the world’s most famous works can be seen here: Leonardo da Vinci’s Annunciation, Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, Michelangelo’s Holy Family, and the Roman Medici Venus statue.

Museum of Latin American Art / Museo de Arte Latinoamericano (Buenos Aires)

One of South America’s most important art museums, with over 400 works (paintings, sculptures, photographs).

You can see great works by famous Argentine artists such as Diego Rivera, Antonio Berni, Xul Solar, Jorge de la Vega, and Pedro Figari.

One of its most valuable pieces is a self-portrait by the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

One of the most visited museums in the world, it is the premier exhibition site for the history of military, civilian, and space aviation.

Prado Museum (Madrid)

The National Museum of Madrid’s gallery is based on the royal collection that opened in 1819.

The most significant part of its collection is Spanish painting (Murillo, Velázquez, Francisco de Goya). Besides paintings and sculptures, you can see over 5,000 drawings, 1,000 coins, medals, and other fine artworks.

Although I am not a big art enthusiast, I spent several hours in the building, as the artworks are so beautiful!

One of the world’s most important and largest collections is displayed across several museums, the most famous part being the Sistine Chapel.

It showcases masterpieces from ancient Near Eastern (Egyptian and Assyrian), Greek-Roman, and Etruscan-Italic art, through early Christian and medieval artworks (3rd-14th centuries) and Renaissance art (15th century) up to the 19th century, but also includes modern art.

The most visited section is the Vatican Gallery, where you can see paintings by Michelangelo and Raphael.

Hermitage Museum (Saint Petersburg)

Russia’s largest and most famous museum, located in the Winter Palace.

Its name derives from the Hermitage, the private retreat built by Empress Catherine the Great, where she housed her first collection.

The museum features Italian Renaissance, Dutch Baroque, and French masterworks. You can see the throne room, the czar’s carriage, ancient sculptures, and European painting gems from the Enlightenment era. Nearly 8,000 Western European paintings adorn the museum walls.

As the country’s political, business, economic, educational and cultural centre, Tokyo has the largest number of corporate headquarters, economic institutions, universities and colleges, museums, theatres, shopping and entertainment facilities in Japan. It has a highly developed public transport system, especially trains and subways.

Tokyo attractions

Imperial Palace

Located in the heart of Tokyo, the palace is situated within a massive park, just a quarter-hour walk from the central railway station.

Surrounded by moats filled with water, which served both defensive purposes and as a firebreak in times when most of the city was made of wooden houses.

A distinct part of the vast park, the „East Garden” is open to the public at specified times, but direct access to the imperial palace grounds is only possible through tours organized and led by the Imperial Household Agency. A maximum of 300 people can enter at a time.

Access: a short walk from Sakuradamon metro station.

Senso-ji Temple

Completed in 645, Senso-ji is Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple, dedicated to Kannon, the goddess of mercy.

Visitors cannot enter the temple itself, but they can pray in the worship hall (Haiden) and light candles.

The temple is surrounded by beautifully aged streets with traditional craft shops and street food vendors, especially artisanal sweets. Nakamise dori, the street behind the Kaminarimon gate, is one of Japan’s oldest.

Not far from the temple is a five-story pagoda built in 942, dedicated to Kannon. Standing over 53 meters tall, it’s equivalent to an 18-story building, with each level symbolizing different elements: earth (base); water (body); fire (ornament); wind (top); and space (jewel).

Access: about 500 meters on foot from the Akasuka metro station.

Meiji Shrine (Meiji Jingu Shrine)

A Shinto shrine in Shibuya, Tokyo, dedicated to the late Emperor Meiji and his consort, Empress Shoken.

It is located within a 700,000 square-meter forest that is home to 365 different tree species and 120,000 trees donated from various regions of Japan when the shrine was established. Today, it’s a popular leisure spot in central Tokyo.

Visitors may be lucky enough to witness a traditional Japanese wedding here.

Access: roughly 800 meters on foot from Kita-sando metro station.

Ueno Park

One of the most visited parks in Tokyo, especially during spring when many cherry trees bloom. It is culturally significant due to three excellent museums (Tokyo National Museum, National Museum of Nature and Science, and National Museum of Western Art) located within.

Also home to a concert hall, Tōshō-gū Shrine, Shinobazu Pond with the Benzaiten Shrine, and Ueno Zoo, it’s a tourist and recreational hotspot for both Japanese residents and foreigners.

Tokyo National Museum

Japan’s largest and oldest museum, and the most visited site in Ueno Park.

From 40,000-year-old Paleolithic stone tools to invaluable artifacts from feudal Japan and modern art, the museum showcases Japan’s rich history.

The museum consists of various buildings, such as the Japanese Gallery, Asian Gallery, Hōryū-ji Treasures Gallery, a research and information center, outdoor exhibitions, and a garden.

Alongside the main building are smaller annexes with exhibits from other significant cultures, especially those intersected by the Silk Road.

Ginza

Known as Japan’s most famous business and entertainment district, Ginza hosts numerous internationally recognized department stores, boutiques, restaurants, and cafes. It’s renowned as one of the world’s largest luxury shopping districts.

The area’s iconic night scene features the massive neon sign of the Fujija building. A notable landmark is the Ginza Wako clock tower.

Every Saturday and Sunday from 12:00-17:00, the main street in Ginza is closed to vehicle traffic for pedestrians to roam freely, known as Hokosza Tengoku or simply Hokoten.

Ginza also houses one of the city’s best kabuki theaters, showcasing traditional Japanese theater with painted actors performing to unique music.

Tokyo Tower

Located in Shiba Park, this radio, telecommunications, and observation tower also houses shops, entertainment venues, and a Shinto shrine. At night, the tower becomes a distinctive feature of Tokyo’s skyline.

Standing at 333 meters, it’s one of the tallest steel structures in the world and the second tallest artificial structure in Japan, inspired by the Eiffel Tower (11 meters taller).

The tower features two observation decks: Main Deck (150 meters) and Top Deck (250 meters).

FootTown, a four-story building at the base, hosts the Guinness World Records Museum Tokyo, displaying life-size figures, photographs, and memorabilia of authenticated records.

A hologram gallery (Gallery Delux) and a trick art gallery are also located in FootTown, showcasing paintings and objects that create optical illusions.

Akihabara

A district in Chiyoda, also known as Akihabara Electric Town.

It’s the cultural center and shopping district for otakus (excessively enthusiastic fans) of computer equipment, video games, anime, and manga.

Popular here are maid cafes, where costumed servers play role-playing games while serving food and drinks.

Tokyo Skytree

Located in the Sumida district, the building opened in 2012 and has since become one of Tokyo’s iconic landmarks.

At 634 meters high, it is the tallest man-made structure in Japan and the world’s tallest freestanding tower (and second tallest building).

It has two observation decks open to the public: Tembo Deck (350 meters) and Tembo Galleria (450 meters). Separate and combined tickets are available for both decks. Both offer visitors a breathtaking panoramic view of Tokyo, and on a clear day, you can even see Mount Fuji.

Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea

Japan couldn’t miss out on the Disneyland story! It was the first park to open outside the United States. Following the Florida Disneyland, it’s the second most-visited amusement park.

Tokyo Disneyland evokes the world of classic Disney stories, similar to the American parks. Here you will find the iconic castle, amusement park rides, and famous characters such as Mickey, Donald, and the Disney princesses.

Tokyo DisneySea is a unique park based on maritime adventures. Its themes include the Arabian world, Mediterranean ports, and even a sinking volcano. The park’s unique visuals and more exciting attractions are especially popular with adults and older children.

Mori Tower

One of Tokyo’s modern and elegant skyscrapers, which is the central element of the Roppongi Hills complex. The 238-meter-high building opened in 2003 and has since become one of the city’s defining landmarks.

The Tokyo City View observation deck is located on the top floor of the tower, offering a breathtaking panorama of Tokyo, especially at sunset or at night. The highest outdoor terrace, the Sky Deck, offers a 360-degree view from a height of 270 meters, and on a clear day, you can even see Mount Fuji.

The Mori Tower houses offices, shops, restaurants, and the renowned Mori Art Museum, which attracts visitors with its contemporary art exhibitions. In front of the building is Maman, a giant spider sculpture.

Yoyogi Koen Park

Adjacent to the Meiji Shrine, this park is one of the largest in Tokyo. It was the site of the 1964 Olympic Village, later demolished and converted into a park.

The park’s centerpiece is a lake and fountain, surrounded by numerous cherry trees. It’s especially worth visiting during the cherry blossom season.

Access: near Yoyogi-kōen metro station.

Shibuya Crossing and subway station

Shibuya’s train and subway station is one of Japan’s busiest transport hubs (the busiest being Shinjuku station).

Above ground, the iconic zebra crossing is unique for allowing pedestrian crossing in all directions simultaneously. Hence, it’s extremely busy, with thousands of people crossing at once.

It’s best viewed from the windows of nearby shops or cafes, offering a fantastic view of the bustling crowd.

Shinjuku

One of Tokyo’s busiest and most diverse districts, Shinjuku offers a unique blend of modern city life, entertainment, business, and green spaces.
