Fiumicino Airport

Leonardo Express train

Runs from early morning to late evening to Termini railway station.

Tickets can be purchased from Trenitalia vending machines or at tobacco shops in the train station. After validation before boarding, you can travel for 90 minutes.

The price for a one-way ticket is €14. Free for children under 4. Children aged 4-12 can travel free with an adult holding a ticket!

FR1 train

Runs from early morning to late evening, with metro connections at Ostiense, Tuscolana, and Tiburtina stops.

Tickets can be purchased online, from Trenitalia vending machines or at tobacco shops in the train station. After validation before boarding, you can travel for 90 minutes.

The price for a one-way ticket is €8. Free for children under 4. Children aged 4-12 can travel free with an adult holding a ticket!

Transfer buses

All buses run to the central railway station in the city center, Termini.

At Termini, the departure point is on the right side of the street facing the station. There’s also a ticket office here, but tickets can also be purchased online.

Night transportation

Cotral buses run between the airport and Tiburtina metro station. Follow the Regional Bus Station sign at the airport.

Bus 520

Runs to Cinecittà metro station (Line A), from where you can reach the city center by metro.

Public transport tickets and passes are valid!

Bus 720

Runs to Laurentina metro station (Line B), from where you can reach the city center by metro. It has a longer journey time than bus 520, recommended for those heading to the southern part of Rome.

Rome city public transportation

Tickets and passes must be validated when entering the metro area, and when boarding trams and buses. When leaving the metro, you must also insert the ticket or pass in the appropriate place.

For passes, the device prints the time when it becomes valid on first use.

Public transportation is free for children under 10, except for airport and transfer services!

Single ticket (BIT)

Valid for 100 minutes from validation, transfers are allowed within this time. You can also transfer on the metro, but only as long as you don’t leave the metro area (similar to Budapest).

Price: 1.50 €

Group ticket (MULTI-BIT)

A single card that allows you to travel 2, 3, 5 or 10 times up to 100 minutes from the date of validation. When the 100-minute period expires, the card must be revalidated, which starts the next 100-minute period.

The price is the same as the corresponding number of tickets, so no discount is included. This is worth buying if you are making fewer trips and do not need to buy a separate ticket.

Daily and weekly passes

24, 48, 72-hour and weekly passes are available, allowing unlimited travel by metro, bus, and tram from first validation.

The weekly ticket (CIS) is valid for 7 calendar days, with the first day being the day of validation.

The most beautiful churches in the world

Sagrada Família (Barcelona)

For me, this is the most beautiful church in the world. It’s a must-see attraction from the inside for anyone visiting Barcelona!

It was designed by the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, who played a role in many of the city’s buildings. Construction began in 1882 and is progressing extremely slowly due to the complexity of the plans. Work is still ongoing, and when completed, it will be the largest basilica in the world.

Its length from the apse to the northern end is 90 meters and it’s 45 meters wide. Its interior height reaches 75 meters. Features of several styles can be found. The architects before Gaudí designed a neo-Catalan building, which is a type of neo-Gothic style. Gaudí himself further developed it in the spirit of modernism.

St. Peter’s Basilica (Vatican)

The largest and most significant church of the Roman Catholic Church, and also the seat of the papacy. The basilica is one of the holiest sites in Christianity and attracts millions of pilgrims and tourists annually.

The original church was built around 324 during the reign of Emperor Constantine I, above the tomb of Saint Peter the Apostle. Construction of the current basilica began in 1506 under Pope Julius II and was completed in 1626 under Pope Urban VIII. Many famous Renaissance and Baroque artists and architects participated in the construction, including Bramante, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Bernini.

St. Peter’s Square is located in front of the basilica, designed by Bernini. The square is surrounded by two semicircular colonnades. Inside, there are numerous artistic creations, including Michelangelo’s Pietà.

Seville Cathedral

One of Spain’s most significant and impressive buildings, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

It is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and the third-largest church in the Christian world. The 15th-century cathedral was built on the site of a former Moorish mosque, some elements of which were incorporated into the new structure.

Its outstanding feature is the 104-meter-high Giralda tower. The cathedral’s bell tower was originally the minaret of the Moorish mosque. On top of it is a 4-meter-high bronze statue, the „Giraldillo”.

St. Paul’s Cathedral (London)

The cathedral of the Anglican Diocese of London and an important symbol of English national identity.

The current cathedral is the fifth on the site; its predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. Construction of the new one began in 1675 based on Sir Christopher Wren’s designs and was completed in 1711.

The cathedral’s most famous feature is the dome. Inside, 30 meters high, is the Whispering Gallery. It’s famous for its special acoustics: a whisper along the wall can be clearly heard on the opposite side of the gallery.

Many famous personalities rest in the crypt, including Admiral Nelson, the Duke of Wellington, and Sir Christopher Wren.

Wat Arun (Bangkok)

One of Bangkok’s most iconic and beautiful Buddhist temples is located on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River, opposite the Royal Palace.

Its name means „Temple of Dawn”, referring to the sight of the first rays of the rising sun glinting off the temple’s decorations. Much of these come from Chinese porcelain plates and cups.

The central pagoda is a Khmer-style tower that symbolizes Mount Meru in Hindu-Buddhist cosmology. At its base are statues depicting mythological creatures and demons. We can climb to different levels of the tower via a steep staircase, offering a wonderful view.

Milan Cathedral

The symbol of Milan is one of the masterpieces of Italian Gothic architecture.

Its construction lasted nearly six centuries, from 1386 until the end of the 19th century. The cathedral is the third-largest Catholic church in the world. From its roof, there’s a beautiful view of the city and the Alps on clear days.

Its exterior is decorated with more than 3,400 statues depicting saints, biblical figures, and mythological creatures. The roof of the church is crowned by 135 stone spires, the highest of which is the 108.5-meter main tower, topped by the famous „Madonnina” statue.

Hagia Sophia (Istanbul)

One of the most outstanding works of Turkish architecture and a symbol of Istanbul.

Originally built as a Christian church in 537 during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, it was the largest church in the world for nearly a thousand years. Under Turkish rule, it was a mosque, then a museum, and since 2020, it has been functioning as a mosque again.

Its two distinctive features are the dome and the minarets. The nearly 56-meter-high dome has 40 windows. The mosque has four minarets that were added to the building during Ottoman rule. Their height and style differ slightly, reflecting the different times of their construction.

Notre-Dame (Paris)

One of the most well-known among the numerous iconic buildings of the French capital.

The cathedral is an outstanding example of French Gothic architecture, particularly famous for its western facade, which features two monumental towers, rich sculptural decoration, and a large rose window.

Many people don’t know that Notre-Dame’s organ is a huge musical treasure. Many consider Notre-Dame’s 113-register, five-manual grand organ to be one of the best instruments in the world.

The reconstruction of the temple, which was severely damaged in the 2019 fire, is fortunately nearing its end, so it will soon reopen its doors to visitors.

Golden Temple (India)

Officially named Harmandir Sahib, the holiest site of the Sikh religion is located in the Indian city of Amritsar.

It got its name from its upper level covered in gold, which was donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the 19th century. The temple is located in the middle of an artificial lake, the Amrit Sarovar, accessed by a long marble bridge. The building’s four entrances symbolize that it’s open to people of all castes, religions, and nationalities.

Part of the complex is a huge community kitchen, the Langar, where free food is served daily to up to 100,000 pilgrims and visitors.

Cologne Cathedral

The construction of this Gothic cathedral lasted for several centuries, from 1248 to 1880. This resulted in a monumental church.

It’s Germany’s largest Gothic church and the world’s third-tallest cathedral, with twin towers reaching 157 meters high. Its interior is also impressive: it has five naves, and the vault of the main nave is 43 meters high.

The cathedral houses numerous artistic treasures, including the Shrine of the Three Kings, one of the most significant goldsmith works of the Middle Ages. The building has 10,000 square meters of stained glass windows, many of which are original, medieval creations. The western facade of the cathedral is particularly impressive, with its richly decorated portals and rose window.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral (New York)

The Big Apple isn’t famous for its churches, but this one definitely stands out!

Located in the heart of Manhattan on Fifth Avenue, opposite the Rockefeller Center. The cathedral is impressive in its size: 123 meters long, 53 meters wide, and the towers reach 100 meters high. The building is made of white marble, creating a contrast with the surrounding skyscrapers.

The building contains 21 altars and 19 bells and can accommodate 2,200 people. It has been the site of many significant events, including the funeral service for President Kennedy’s brother, Robert F. Kennedy, in 1968.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque (Abu Dhabi)

The most impressive building in the capital of the United Arab Emirates is named after the country’s first president, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

The mosque is built of white Greek and Macedonian marble, decorated with gold, semi-precious stones, crystals, and ceramics. The main building is crowned by 82 domes, the largest of which is 85 meters high and 32.8 meters in diameter. It can accommodate up to 40,000 worshippers at once.

The mosque’s courtyard is lined with 1,000 columns, each decorated with intricate floral mosaic patterns. Inside the building is the world’s largest hand-woven carpet, covering an area of 5,700 square meters and weighing 47 tons. A huge chandelier hangs in the main prayer hall, weighing 12 tons and decorated with Swarovski crystals.

Salt Lake Temple (Salt Lake City)

One of the most important buildings of the Mormon Church is located in the capital of Utah.

The temple was built in Neo-Romanesque style, with granite walls up to 2.7 meters thick. The building is 68 meters high and has six towers, the tallest of which is 64 meters, topped with a gilded statue of the Angel Moroni.

Its peculiarity is that – unlike many other religious buildings – only members of the Mormon Church who meet certain church requirements can enter. Nevertheless, it’s definitely worth seeing as it’s an impressive sight from the outside as well.

Senso-ji Temple (Tokyo)

One of the oldest and most famous Buddhist temples, which legend says was founded in 628.

The complex consists of several buildings, including the main hall, a five-story pagoda, and numerous smaller shrines. The main hall houses the temple’s holiest object, the Kannon statue, which is kept hidden from public view.

It’s the site of numerous festivals and celebrations, including the famous Sanja Matsuri in May. The temple is particularly spectacular in spring when the cherry trees are in bloom, and at night when the buildings are illuminated.

Bruges

This small Belgian city is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited! It’s no coincidence that a famous film describes it as a fairy tale.

Often referred to as the Venice of the North, Bruges is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and canal system. One of the best ways to explore the city is by boat, allowing you to see numerous historical buildings and charming bridges.

The historic center, with its impressive medieval buildings and the famous Belfry tower, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and offers many wonders.

Kyoto

One of Japan’s most magical cities, Kyoto is famous for its stunning temples, traditional teahouses, and well-preserved historic districts.

Among these, the Kinkaku-ji, or Golden Pavilion, stands out with its gleaming gold-leaf temple set in the middle of a pond. Another notable temple is Kiyomizu-dera, which features a waterfall and breathtaking views.

Cape Town

The jewel of South Africa, Cape Town is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations, nestled at the foot of a mountain along the coastline.

Table Mountain is one of the most iconic natural attractions in Cape Town. Visitors can reach the summit by cable car or on foot, enjoying breathtaking views of the city and the Atlantic Ocean.

Another significant attraction is the V&A Waterfront, a beautiful harbor area with restaurants, shops, and hotels, home to Africa’s largest contemporary art museum.

From Portugal, I didn’t choose Lisbon, although it’s a city with a great atmosphere, but Porto appealed to me more.

The city center is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with stunning sights and narrow cobblestone streets. The Ribeira district is particularly worth exploring, with many shops, restaurants, and cafés.

Another main tourist attraction in Porto is the port wine cellars, located across the Douro River in Vila Nova de Gaia. It’s a great experience to sit down with a glass of wine and enjoy the view of the Dom Luís I Bridge and the surrounding area.

Queenstown

Located on New Zealand’s South Island, Queenstown is known as the adventure capital of the country. Situated beautifully on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by the Remarkables mountain range, it is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

The city is famous for its thrilling jet boat rides on the Shotover River, racing through canyons. In the winter months, it becomes a hub for skiing and snowboarding.

In addition to active adventures, it’s an excellent place for relaxation. The nearby wine regions, such as Gibbston Valley, are famous for their Pinot Noir wines.

Florence

The heart of Tuscany is known as the cradle of the Renaissance, and its architectural and artistic heritage make it one of the most beautiful cities.

Its symbol is the cathedral, renowned for its massive dome, intricate marble decorations, and impressive interiors, which are integral to Florence’s cityscape. We can admire this from Michelangelo Square, the best viewpoint.

Among its museums, the Uffizi Gallery stands out, showcasing works by Botticelli and Michelangelo. Additionally, the Palazzo Pitti should not be missed, as the palace and gardens reflect the power and taste of the Medici family.

San Francisco

The most charming city on the west coast of the USA, though I believe many would rank it first.

The Golden Gate Bridge is naturally its most famous landmark, offering stunning views of the city, the surrounding bay, and Alcatraz Island, which once housed America’s most notorious prison and now operates as a museum.

In this hilly city, be sure to try the iconic cable car, which connects downtown to the waterfront area, Fisherman’s Wharf. For a truly enjoyable ride, stand on the steps and hold onto the rail!

A must-see photo spot is Lombard Street, one of the world’s steepest and most winding streets, beautifully lined with landscaped gardens.

Prague

The capital of the Czech Republic boasts one of Europe’s most beautiful old town areas, filled with Gothic architecture.

Everyone knows the Charles Bridge, Prague’s iconic structure. The bridge is always bustling with local artists, musicians, and street vendors, making the walk a memorable experience.

Overlooking the city is the world’s largest castle complex, which includes St. Vitus Cathedral and the Presidential Palace. The view of the city from here is breathtaking.

And of course, a visit to a pub or brewery is a must! Czech beers are widely recognized for their quality, and you can sample them in many small pubs.

It has become one of my favorite places; it’s a spectacular city in every aspect. Singapore places great emphasis on eco-conscious living, resulting in numerous green spaces.

Located on the western coast of British Columbia, Canada, Vancouver is one of the most popular North American cities for both nature lovers and city dwellers. The city is famous for its mountainous backdrop and multicultural community.

Vancouver also places a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability, leading in green initiatives and technologies. Its goal is to become the world’s greenest city by 2050. Even today, it is considered one of the most livable places in the world.

Nestled at the foot of the beautiful Atlas Mountains, Marrakesh is renowned for its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning architecture.

One of Morocco’s iconic cities, it is also known as the Red City due to the distinctive terracotta color of its walls. Its center is Jemaa el-Fnaa square, home to one of Africa’s largest and most famous markets.

The city is also known for its historical landmarks, such as the Koutoubia Mosque, the tallest building in the city and its symbol.

Scotland’s capital is often underrated on lists because it’s not a large city.

Yet, it remains a personal favorite! Besides its beautiful buildings, it has a unique atmosphere that can’t be described – you have to visit to feel it!

The old town best preserves its medieval character, especially along the famous Royal Mile, which stretches from the Palace of Holyroodhouse to the castle. The street is filled with historical buildings, churches, and museums.

Edinburgh’s vibrant cultural life is driven by its year-round festivals, notably the Edinburgh Festival in August and the Fringe, the world’s largest international arts festival.

Hungary’s capital isn’t on this list just because I live in this country. 🙂

Tourist data also shows that it is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Just think of the castle, which alone holds numerous attractions. The view of the city and the Parliament is also fantastic!

Additionally, Budapest is famous for its baths. Many thermal baths await tourists, with the Széchenyi, Rudas, and Gellért baths standing out.

The capital of Italy was the centre of the former Roman Empire. Its extensive historical center is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Its museums and monuments are among the 50 most visited tourist destinations in the world.

Colosseum

One of the world’s most famous buildings, primarily a venue for gladiator battles, but other performances were also held here.

Construction began in 72 AD under Emperor Vespasian at the southeastern end of the Forum Romanum. It was originally called the Flavian Amphitheater. It got its current name in the Middle Ages, presumably from a nearby statue of the colossus associated with Nero.

It has an elliptical floor plan, 188 meters long, 156 meters wide, and 48.5 meters high, made of limestone, tuff, and brick. It was designed to accommodate 50-75 thousand people smoothly.

The basic ticket (named: 24h – Colosseo, Foro Romano, Palatino) is valid for 24 hours from first use (entry) and during this time also grants entry to the Forum Romanum. At the Colosseum, this ticket does not allow access to the arena and the underground part (this is possible with the Full Experience ticket)!

Forum Romanum

Adjacent to the Colosseum, this vast area was the main public square of ancient Rome, serving as a commercial and political hub.

Many building remains stand, such as the Temple of Romulus, the Arch of Titus, and the Temple of Julius Caesar. There were temples to several gods here, including those of Saturn, Janus, and Concordia at the foot of the Capitolium, and the Temple of Vesta at the foot of the Palatine.

It’s worth spending a few hours to explore the entire area. I recommend entering on the eastern side at the Portale Vignola – Ingresso Colle Palatino and starting left. This way, you will see the most beautiful part of the Forum Romanum from above.

Trevi Fountain

Rome’s most famous and globally known fountain. Legend has it that those who throw a coin into it will surely return to Rome. It is the city’s largest fountain.

It was renovated a few years ago and now offers even more stunning views in the evening lighting. No wonder it is one of the biggest tourist attractions among Rome’s sights.

Unfortunately, in recent times, several tourists thought it would be „fun” to enter the water. Definitely do not do this; serious fines are involved, besides being quite tasteless!

Spanish Steps

The 138 steps leading to the Trinitá dei Monti church are a favorite spot for both locals and tourists. It gets its name from the nearby Spanish Embassy.

At its base, you find one of the city’s most interesting fountains, the Fontana di Barcacci, created by Gianlorenzo Bernini.

Sitting on the steps is prohibited, and police constantly monitor the area and will intervene if someone tries to sit down!

Pantheon

One of the most significant creations of ancient architecture, the Pantheon still stands largely in its original form in the center of Rome.

In modern times, the term has become synonymous with grand buildings that serve as the burial places for distinguished personalities. Such pantheons have been constructed in numerous cities around the world. Among others, it is the resting place of Raphael, King Victor Emmanuel II, and King Umberto I of Italy.

Victor Emmanuel II Monument

Located in one of Rome’s busiest squares, this monument is considered an important national symbol of the country.

In front of the columns stands the equestrian statue of King Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of unified Italy and a key figure in the formation of national unity.

The monument is architecturally and artistically significant, measuring 135 meters wide and 70 meters high, reaching up to 81 meters high with its towering sculptures.

In front of the massive monument, similar to Budapest, lies the tomb of the unknown soldier, flanked by a fountain on each side.

An elevator allows visitors to ascend to the top of the monument, offering a magnificent view of the city.

Capitoline Hill

Next to the monument rises one of the seven hills of Rome, known in Italian as the Campidoglio. The square was constructed based on the designs of Michelangelo.

Today, the square houses the Palazzo dei Conservatori (where the statue of Rome’s founders, Romulus and Remus, can be seen), the Palazzo Senatori, and the Palazzo Nuovo.

Piazza del Popolo

Not far from the Spanish Steps, this historic square features a beautiful fountain and Rome’s second oldest obelisk at its center.

The square is bordered by three churches, the most notable being the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, renowned for its Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces, including two paintings by Caravaggio. The other two churches, Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto, are known as the „twin churches” due to their similar exteriors.

At the northern end of the square is the aforementioned Porta del Popolo, which was originally part of Rome’s city walls and renovated in the 16th century by Pope Sixtus V.

Castel Sant’Angelo

Located along the banks of the Tiber River, it can be approached via the Ponte Sant’Angelo bridge.

Originally built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian and his family, the structure was transformed into a fortress in the Middle Ages and played a crucial role in the city’s defense. It later served as a prison and barracks.

The base is a square supporting the distinctive cylindrical structure containing four chambers. Atop the building stands the famous Angel statue.

Since 1933, it has operated as a museum. Visitors can explore the ancient spiral ramp, the imperial burial chambers, a collection of weapons, and an exhibit detailing the building’s history.

Trastevere

This neighborhood on the right bank of the Tiber River offers a true taste of Italian life.

While there aren’t many attractions, it’s worth visiting for the atmosphere alone. Strolling through its narrow streets filled with numerous restaurants and cafes is a delightful experience.

Isola Tiberina

The Tiber Island, located between Trastevere and the central part of the city, may be small but is worth walking across via the Ponte Fabricio and Cestio bridges.

It’s a great outing, especially when transitioning from the city center to the Trastevere neighborhood.

Theatre of Marcellus

This building is one of the earliest surviving examples of Roman stone theaters and even inspired the design of the later Colosseum.

It was completed in 13 BC during the reign of Emperor Augustus and named after his nephew Marcus Claudius Marcellus, who died young as an imperial heir.

It could accommodate about 15,000 spectators and was a major venue for Rome’s significant dramatic performances. Its features include a semi-circular, multi-tiered arena built from finely crafted travertine stone. Over the centuries, the theater significantly deteriorated and was repurposed during the medieval period into residential buildings and a fortress.

Piazza Navona

Perhaps the most beautiful square in Rome, Piazza Navona is always bustling, lined with spectacular buildings.

Originally built on the site of Domitian’s stadium, it was transformed in the 17th century into the Baroque masterpiece it remains today.

The most famous of its three exquisite fountains is the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, designed by Bernini in 1651, which features four giant statues representing the four major rivers of the world (Nile, Ganges, Danube, Rio de la Plata) topped with a grand obelisk.

The other two important fountains are the Fountain of Neptune (Fontana del Nettuno) and the Moor Fountain (Fontana del Moro), both elaborate Baroque creations.

Numerous historic buildings surround the square, among which the Church of Sant’Agnese in Agone stands out.

Column of Marcus Aurelius

Situated in Piazza Colonna, this column is one of Rome’s finest, notable for its intricate reliefs and rich historical depictions.

Erected around AD 180 in honor of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, it features a spiraling relief, similar to Trajan’s Column, depicting Marcus Aurelius’ military campaigns against the Germanic peoples and Sarmatians.

Originally, a statue of Marcus Aurelius topped the column, but it was lost over time. In the 16th century, Pope Sixtus V replaced it with a statue of Saint Paul.

Villa Borghese

Rome’s best-known park is a favorite relaxation spot for locals.

It features lakes, summer palaces, fountains, and a zoo, making it a perfect place for a stroll in pleasant surroundings. It is named after Scipione Borghese, a cardinal.

Baths of Caracalla

These are the ruins of one of the grandest and most significant Roman bath complexes, located not far from the Colosseum.

They were inaugurated in 216 AD during Emperor Caracalla’s reign and operated until 537 AD. At its peak, the facility was very popular, attracting an average of 8,000 people daily. More than just a place for bathing, it served as a cultural center where visitors could engage in sports, read in libraries, and participate in various leisure activities.

Thorough excavations in the last century have largely restored its former layout. The complex’s roof was made of intricate vaulted structures, which still impress today.

Lateran Basilica (Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano)

Officially known as the Cathedral of Saint John Lateran, it is the oldest and highest-ranking among Rome’s four major papal basilicas, often called „the mother and head of all churches in the city”.

Built during the reign of Emperor Constantine in the 4th century, it has undergone multiple renovations and rebuildings over the centuries, particularly suffering significant damage from earthquakes and fires. Each reconstruction made it more ornate and monumental. It assumed its current form in 1735.

The basilica boasts a vast interior with five aisles, divided by impressive columns and arches. At the end of the central aisle is the apse, adorned with 13th-century mosaics.

Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore

This is the largest Roman Catholic church in Rome named after the Virgin Mary and one of the papal major basilicas outside the Vatican City.

The church and its surroundings are considered one of Rome’s most significant artistic and urban architectural complexes. Inside, the Renaissance coffered flat ceiling stands out, richly adorned with gilding.

Vatican City

The headquarters of the Catholic Church, where the Pope serves as the head of state. It is the smallest independent state in the world by area, completely surrounded by Rome. Its territory is enclosed by walls, except for the section facing St. Peter’s Square.

St. Peter’s Square and Basilica

The Basilica is perhaps the most famous church in the world.

At the center of the square stands an obelisk brought from Egypt by Emperor Nero. Several fountains can also be found within the square.

An interesting feature is the „optical view” of the square, which allows the basilica’s dome to prominently stand out from its surroundings.

Entry to the square is free, but there is a fee to enter the dome. You can ascend to the dome via stairs or a combination of elevator and stairs. All information can be found here!

Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel

The collection of the Roman Catholic Church includes Greek and Etruscan works as well. Two paths are designated for viewing, a shorter and a longer one.

At the end of the museums, visitors reach the Sistine Chapel, the site of the papal conclave. The ceiling features Michelangelo’s world-famous frescoes.

The castle park is also stunning. Along the central avenue, there is a series of fountains and pools, fed by an artificially created waterfall cascading down the side of the Briano hill.

Their origin has an interesting story: a count once decreed that houses should be easily dismantled and rebuilt to avoid a tax on homes. When tax collectors came, the houses were taken down and then rebuilt after they left.

Florence

I previously mentioned Florence as the center of Tuscany, but it also deserves its own spot among the most beautiful places in Italy!

Often referred to as the cradle of the Renaissance, the city was greatly influenced by the Medici family. Its historical center is rightfully part of UNESCO’s World Heritage.

Among Florence’s famous buildings are the Ponte Vecchio and the cathedral, but the city is most renowned for Michelangelo’s statue of David.

Sicily

Much like Naples, Sicily, though rich in attractions, captures tourists with its atmosphere.

Its capital, Palermo, is a chaotic yet wonderful city. Strolling through the city, you’ll almost always find a market where you shouldn’t miss the seafood dishes.

Bologna

The capital of the Emilia-Romagna region boasts a rich history and an impressive cultural heritage.

Gradara

Not far from Rimini, this picturesque small town is dominated by a very impressive castle.

The castle rising above the town (Rocca di Gradara) is one of the best-preserved and most spectacular medieval fortresses in Italy, and within its walls lies a small village.

Inside the castle, you can explore rooms furnished with medieval furniture, a chapel decorated with frescoes, and the armory. Walking along the castle walls, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the surrounding area.

They have also played an important role in culture. According to legend, one episode of Dante’s Divine Comedy takes place here, where the tragic love story of Paolo and Francesca comes to an end. This story further increased the fame of Gradara and its castle.

Tropea

Located in the Italian „boot” in the Calabria region, this city is known for its magnificent beaches.

Tropea’s Old Town, known as the „Coast of the Gods”, is worth visiting not just for its narrow beaches. The old town is built on a 40-meter-high limestone cliff, offering fantastic views of the Gulf of Saint Euphemia.

On the beach, a Benedictine monastery, Santa Maria dell’Isola, stands alone on a limestone rock.

But don’t just stop here; the area has many small yet beautiful beaches waiting to be discovered. Feel free to explore them!

Turin

Unfortunately, Turin tends to be overshadowed by Rome, Milan, and Naples, despite being one of Northern Italy’s most significant cities.

The cultural richness of Turin is evident from the fact that it has the most museums in the country. Notably, it hosts four national museums, including the Museo del Risorgimento with the memorial room of Lajos Kossuth.

Located at the foot of the Alps and along the Po River, Turin’s iconic building is the Mole Antonelliana. Standing 167.5 meters tall, its dome lights up at night with the numbers of the Fibonacci sequence. It also houses the National Museum of Cinema.

Another main feature is the over 18 km of arcades, of which 12 km are interconnected. The first arcades were built in the Middle Ages, but the existing ones started in the 17th century.

Seceda

The Dolomites, the Italian part of the Alps, are home to numerous stunning locations.

The 2519-meter-tall Seceda is one of the most well-known peaks, easily accessible. A cable car runs to the base of this peak near Bolzano, from where it’s an easy walk to the top, even for children. The view from there is unparalleled.

Matera

The city’s highlight is the Sassi di Matera, a complex of historical cave dwellings that make up the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993 and the European Capital of Culture in 2019.

The cityscape, particularly the Piazza Duomo built on the city’s highest point, is visible from almost everywhere.

People lived in the mentioned cave dwellings without electricity and water until the 1950s. Today, they are uninhabited and open for visitors, known as the country’s largest open-air museum.

And while in Venice, don’t miss the town of Burano on a nearby island!

Its main attraction is the brightly colored houses. Since the island’s heyday, the local government has regulated the colors that houses can be painted, resulting in streets adorned with a variety of pastel hues.

Burano is also famous for its lace-making. The Lace-making School established in 1872 showcases this craft.

Ostuni

If you’re visiting Alberobello, it’s worth making a trip to the nearby town of Ostuni.

Built atop a hill, this town is famous for its whitewashed houses. Honestly, it reminded me of Santorini when I saw the pictures.

The old town, surrounded by a wall, is charming to walk through, with its white houses and narrow alleys and streets. It’s aptly nicknamed „La Città Bianca” or The White City.

Sirmione

While Lake Garda as a whole deserves its own post, the town of Sirmione on its southern shore is particularly noteworthy.

The narrow but long peninsula has been a popular resort since Roman times, thanks to its stunning location. The famous ancient Roman poet, Catullus, had a villa here.

You enter the town through a castle, which offers a spectacular panoramic view from its walls.

With its narrow streets and colorful houses, Sirmione is not only one of the most beautiful spots on Lake Garda but also in Italy!

Trieste

One of the most unique cities in Italy, Trier is located on the Adriatic coast, on the border with Slovenia.
