Funchal is situated on the southern coast of the island in a natural bay, and with approximately 110,000 inhabitants, it is home to half of Madeira’s population. Monte Palace Tropical Garden

It situated on Monte Hill above Funchal, is one of the most visited natural attractions on the entire island of Madeira.

The garden’s history dates back to the 18th century, when British consul Charles Murray purchased the estate and created a grand park on it. In the 19th century, the palace-like residence of Monte Palace – which for a time operated as a hotel – opened to the public as a tropical garden from the 1980s onwards.

The multi-level, terraced garden conceals a wealth of exotic plants, laurel trees, ferns, water lilies, as well as picturesque waterfalls and ponds. A particularly striking sight is the large panels made from azulejo (Portuguese glazed tiles), several metres high, depicting the island’s history and legends. The garden also houses a privately owned mineral collection, regarded as one of the largest of its kind in the world.

Jardim Botânico

The gardens on the slopes of the Quinta do Bom Sucesso estate cover more than 80,000 square meters and, thanks to their rich collection of plants, showcase exotic species from many parts of the world.

Teleferico da Madeira

The gondola lift departing near the old town is one of Funchal’s most popular activities, which almost every visitor makes a point of experiencing. The 3,200-metre cable car rises to an altitude of 560 metres above sea level, reaching Monte Hill in just 15 minutes. The specially designed gondolas offer a 360-degree panorama of the city, the Atlantic Ocean, and the volcanic highlands.

The cable car has two lines in Funchal: one departs from the seafront promenade and goes to the Monte Palace gardens, while the other continues from there to the Botanical Garden. The views are particularly stunning in the morning and late afternoon.

The cable car ride is a tourist experience in itself, but those visiting Monte Hill should also stop at the Nossa Senhora do Monte church – the resting place of Charles IV, the last King of Hungary, who was beatified by Pope John Paul II.

Nossa Senhora do Monte Church

The Our Lady of Monte Basilica (Nossa Senhora do Monte), rising on Monte Hill, is one of the most important pilgrimage sites on Madeira. The white, twin-towered baroque-style church was consecrated in 1818 on the site of an earlier 15th-century chapel, of which legend has it that one of the first discoverers of Madeira first caught sight of a child living on the island.

The church holds a particularly deep Hungarian connection: here lies Charles IV, the last ruler of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, who lived in exile on Madeira after his abdication and died in Funchal in 1922. Pope John Paul II beatified him in 2004, and his statue and image appear on numerous Madeiran devotional objects. The steps leading to the church offer a splendid view of the city and the bay.

Also on Monte Hill, near the basilica is the Quinta do Monte villa, which was once the home of Charles IV and today operates as an elegant hotel. The pilgrimage site and its Hungarian connections make this a particularly special visit, best reached by the Teleferico cable car.

Mercado dos Lavradores

Built in 1940, the farmers’ market is one of Funchal’s most iconic gathering places. The art déco-style building’s facade is adorned with traditional azulejo tiles, while inside, a market that engages all the senses awaits visitors, showcasing Madeiran flavours, aromas, and colours.

The market offers a wide variety of the island’s exotic fruits – papaya, passion fruit, banana, pineapple – as well as local vegetables. It is worth arriving early, as fresh produce sells out by noon and the market quiets down significantly.

Zona Velha

Funchal’s old town, the Zona Velha, was once a simple fishing quarter, but has since become one of the city’s most atmospheric and most frequently visited districts.

One of the quarter’s distinctive features is the Arte de Portas Abertas project: the doors of several hundred residential buildings in the district are decorated with works by local and international artists. This initiative, which can also be considered an open-air gallery, began in the early 2010s and has since become a postcard-worthy decoration of the Zona Velha.

At the eastern end of the district stands the São Tiago Fortress (Forte de São Tiago), built in 1614 to protect the harbour. With its yellow facade and ocean-facing bastions, it remains a defining element of the skyline today, and its walls host temporary exhibitions. The seafront promenade leads from here to the more modern part of the city, offering fine views of the harbour and anchored ships along the way.

Sé Cathedral

The Sé Cathedral, located in the heart of Funchal on an elegant pedestrian street, is the island’s most significant Late Gothic building, whose construction began in 1493 and was completed in 1508.

Behind the plain, whitewashed exterior lies a monumental interior: the ceiling presents rows of coffered panels carved from local cedar and ivory, reflecting the Iberian Moorish (Mudéjar) influence.

The cathedral’s 55-metre tower is clad in Sevillian azulejo tiles – a motif that is virtually unique in Portugal. In front of the building stands a statue of Pope John Paul II, erected to commemorate his 1991 visit to Madeira. The interior’s high altar is framed by a 16th-century polyptych in the Portuguese-Flemish Late Gothic style – an outstanding work of religious art.

Palácio de São Lourenço

The São Lourenço Palace, situated on Funchal’s seafront promenade, is the island’s first fortress, constructed between 1529 and 1540, shortly after the Portuguese colonisation of the island. The building served not only as a military stronghold but also as the seat of Portuguese colonial administration; today it houses the representation of the Autonomous Region of Madeira and a military museum.

The palace’s collection of decorative arts is outstanding: the former state rooms display 16th–20th century furniture, Flemish tapestries, portraits of European nobility, and relics of the Portuguese Crown. The inner courtyard, the red-brick facade, and the bastions overlooking the Atlantic Ocean together create a remarkable image.

A visit is recommended for all those interested in Portuguese and Madeiran history, or in Iberian Baroque and Renaissance courtly culture. With its viewing terrace overlooking Funchal Bay and its carefully restored rooms, it is one of the capital’s most impressive heritage sites.

Colégio Church

The church in the city centre (Igreja do Colégio) was built by the Jesuits in the early 17th century, as part of a college and boarding school established by the religious order.

Until the 19th century, it was the largest building in Funchal, and with its facade on the cusp of Mannerist and Baroque styles, and its richly decorated interior, it is considered one of the best-preserved churches of its era and style.

The exterior facade, adorned with white-and-black basalt carvings, creates a distinctive contrast. Inside, the gilded wood carvings (talha dourada), painted tile surfaces, and inlaid flooring all evoke the pinnacle achievements of 17th–18th century Iberian Baroque. In 2008, the church also received a magnificent organ, inaugurated by Dutch organist Tom Koopman.

Santa Catarina Park

Funchal’s largest and best-maintained public park, Parque de Santa Catarina, is located near the seafront promenade and the western part of the city. The 36,000-square-metre green space offers flower beds, fountains, a small lake, and pleasant walking paths for relaxation; from the park’s hilly terrain, there is a fine view of Funchal Bay.

A particularly notable feature of the park for Hungarian visitors is the statue of Queen Elizabeth (Sissi) standing beside the Quinta Vigia villa. Empress Elizabeth of Austria and Queen of Hungary visited Madeira twice – in 1860 and in 1894–1895 – spending several months on the island in total. During her first visit, she stayed at the Quinta Vigia villa itself; her memorial statue has been placed on the nearby park promenade.

Between March and September it is open until the evening, and is a regular venue for festivals, cultural events, and open-air concerts. The Quinta Vigia villa today serves as the residence of the President of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

Best museums in Funchal

CR7 Museum

The museum, opened near the harbour on Avenida Sá Carneiro, was inaugurated on 15 December 2013, close to the birthplace of Madeiran football star Cristiano Ronaldo.

The museum was created at Ronaldo’s own initiative, so that Funchal would host the venue where the highlights of his career, his trophies, and personal memorabilia are on display.

The 400-square-metre exhibition space features more than 150 individual and team trophies: among them the five Ballon d’Or awards (2008, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017), four Golden Boots, and medals from league and cup victories with the national team and club teams. Interactive displays, photographs, videos, and a wax figure complete the exhibition. In front of the museum stands a bronze statue depicting the player, created by Madeiran sculptor Ricardo Velosa.

Blandy’s Wine Lodge

The museum on Avenida Arriaga is the most representative venue for the history of Madeiran wine.

The wine cellars, converted from the São Francisco convent, have been in operation since the 17th century, and the Madeiran wines stored here are among the world’s most renowned. The Blandy family, a British wine-trading dynasty, has managed the winery since the 19th century, and it remains one of the region’s defining economic and cultural institutions.

The vast cellars filled with oak barrels offer a walkable exhibition: visitors can learn about Madeira wine’s unique canteiro ageing process, in which the barrels spend their years not in a cellar but in warm attic spaces, undergoing slow oxidative maturation. The collection includes vintages of over a hundred years – a rarity on the world wine market.

Madeira Story Centre

Opened in 2005 with the aim of presenting Madeira’s history from the island’s 15-million-year geological past right up to contemporary cultural life. The museum is housed in a renovated 17th-century merchant’s house, which is itself a valuable piece of architectural heritage.

The exhibition takes visitors chronologically and thematically through the island’s volcanic origins, the era of Portuguese colonisation, the rise of the sugar cane and wine industries, the emergence of 19th-century British and aristocratic tourism, and on to the identity of modern Madeira.

Funchal weather: when is the best time to visit?

The climate of Funchal – and of Madeira more broadly – is classified as a Mediterranean oceanic climate, shaped by the balancing influence of the Gulf Stream. The island is not without reason called the “Island of Eternal Spring”: there are no extreme heatwaves and no harsh winters, the annual average temperature ranges between 18–22°C, and only two distinct seasons can be distinguished – a warmer, drier summer half-year and a rainier, cooler winter period.

Winter (December–February):

Temperature: 14–19°C. More rainfall, with January being the rainiest month. Fewer tourists, lower prices. Christmas and New Year have a special atmosphere, with fireworks.

Spring (March–May):

Temperature: 17–22°C. Gradually less rain, lush green landscape, abundant flowers. April–May: the time of the Funchal Flower Festival, the ideal period for most tourists.

Summer (June–September):

The generally best time to visit Funchal is April–May and September–October. Gjógv

Vestmanna Bird Cliffs

The cliffs running along the western coast are a true paradise for bird lovers. On a boat tour, you can see bird colonies nesting on the high cliff walls up close, where thousands live together. The tour also takes the boat into caves and narrow passages if weather permits.

Masses of puffins, guillemots, and kittiwakes populate the cliffs. The birds’ screeching and the crashing waves create a unique sound concert. The vertical cliff walls rise to heights of several hundred meters, where cascading waterfalls and green vegetation form a colorful mosaic.

Saksun

This fairytale village sits in a natural amphitheater surrounded by high mountains.

Mykines Island

At 880 meters high, the Faroe Islands’ highest point is every hiker’s dream. The route to the summit on Eysturoy island contains sections of varying difficulty, but well-marked paths help climbers. On clear days, most of the islands are visible from the peak, and you can even see Iceland.

During the hike, you experience every element of the Faroese landscape: pastures, rocky sections, streams, and waterfalls. Vegetation gradually becomes sparse as you ascend. Rising fog often creates a magical atmosphere on the mountainside.

Routes to the summit start from different villages, but the most popular starts from Gjógv. In summer, the days are long, so you can even start the hike in late afternoon.

Drangarnir

These two monumental sea stacks rise out of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Vágar Island.

The larger one is about 80 meters high, while the smaller one is 60 meters high. A natural stone bridge spans between the two stacks, creating a unique sight. A difficult hiking trail leads to the cliffs from the village of Sørvágur, which is recommended for experienced hikers.

Propriano

The popular resort town on Corsica’s southwestern coast is located on the shores of Valinco Bay.

The town was originally a small fishing village but is now one of Corsica’s most developed tourist centers. Its modern harbor in the center accommodates several hundred yachts and fishing boats. The town’s beaches, especially Plage de Propriano, attract bathers with fine sand and crystal-clear water.

The area around Propriano is rich in archaeological sites, including the nearby prehistoric site of Filitosa. Excursions depart from the town to the Sartenais region and the Cap Corse Peninsula. Corte

The historic city located in the heart of Corsica, among the mountains, was the island’s former capital. Maui Ocean Center

One of the island’s most important attractions provides insight into Hawaii’s rich marine life.

The aquarium complex features more than 60 exhibition spaces, showcasing more than 2,000 fish and marine species living in the waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands. The facility’s pride is the Açores marine habitat, a massive 2.8-million-liter tank where sharks, rays, and other large marine creatures swim. A unique characteristic of the aquarium is that it exclusively exhibits Hawaiian species.

Visitors can learn about coral reef ecosystems through the Living Reef exhibition, then observe Hawaiian green sea turtles in the Turtle Lagoon. The center also features a special 3D projection room.

Makena Beach

This 1-kilometer-long golden sand beach is often called „Big Beach” and is one of Maui’s most beautiful natural beaches.

Priests performed ritual purification for those arriving at the sanctuary, after which they could leave as free people. The park features the Royal Grounds, where Hawaiian rulers lived, and the impressive Ki’i statues (tikis) nearly 3 meters tall that guard the sacred area.

Nāhuku Lava Tube

The lava tube formed over more than 500 years when liquid lava flowed underground, gradually creating this cave system. The tunnel wall has a special pattern due to the flow traces of solidified lava and various mineral deposits. The lava stalactites hanging from the ceiling and the petrified memories of lava flows along the walls offer a spectacular sight.

Approximately 180 meters of the cave is visitable, with a pleasant temperature of 16-18 °C. At the entrance of the cave and its surroundings, ferns and native plants flourish, creating a curious contrast with the harsh, volcanic environment inside the cave.

Kīlauea Iki Trail

The hiking trail in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park crosses an extinct volcanic crater.

The former fire-breathing volcano last erupted in 1959, when hot molten rock shot up 580 meters high from its lava lake. Today, during the 6.4-kilometer circular trail, visitors can walk across the bottom of the crater, where the volcanic heat hidden deep in the earth can still be felt. ʻImiloa Astronomy Center

The name of the institution means „discovery” or „seeking knowledge” which perfectly reflects its mission: to show how astronomy intertwines with the rich cultural heritage of native Hawaiians. The center’s modern planetarium holds impressive presentations about the Hawaiian sky and the Mauna Kea observatories, introducing the latest scientific discoveries in an interactive way.

In the exhibition space, visitors can learn about the Polynesian navigation methods that ancient Hawaiian sailors used to navigate the open ocean with the help of stars. They also present the cosmology of native Hawaiians and how they interpreted celestial phenomena.

James Cook Monument

The monument in Kealakekua Bay commemorates the place where the famous explorer, Captain James Cook, lost his life under tragic circumstances in 1779.

Initially, the natives received him as a god, but later a conflict arose in which Captain Cook and several of his sailors were killed. Hawaii Botanical Garden

The 17-hectare garden is situated on the slopes of the Kilauea volcano, above Onomea Bay, where the volcanic soil and abundant rainfall create ideal conditions for lush vegetation. The garden contains more than 2,000 different plant species, including rare palm varieties, orchids, bromeliads, and a rich collection of local native plants. A special feature of the garden is the world’s largest outdoor orchid collection.

Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation

One of Hawaii’s most famous and highest coffee plantations is the home of the famous Kona coffee.

The plantation, located on the slopes of the Hualalai volcano at nearly 1,000 meters high, provides ideal conditions for producing exceptional quality coffee. The altitude, volcanic soil, morning sunshine, and afternoon cloud cover all contribute to the distinctive, rich flavor profile of Kona coffee.

Rainbow Falls

The waterfall near Hilo is one of the Big Island’s most beautiful attractions.

The waterfall on the Wailuku River got its name – Waianiwaniwa, which means rainbow in Hawaiian – because rainbows often appear in the spray of the falling water in the sunshine. The waterfall drops 24 meters into a natural pool carved by the river into the volcanic rock. The surrounding area is covered with lush rainforest, which is home to numerous native plant and animal species.

The path to the waterfall is of moderate difficulty and leads through wonderful landscapes. During the hike, we pass through bamboo groves, flowering gingers, and huge banana trees. Although the pool is tantalizingly inviting, swimming is not recommended due to the dangerous current and rocks hidden under the water.

Umauma Falls

This three-tiered waterfall is one of the Big Island’s most spectacular natural attractions.

The water of the Umauma River is carried down by three consecutive, stepped waterfalls over more than 90 meters. The combined view of the waterfalls is breathtaking, especially from the upper viewpoint, from which all three cascades can be admired at once. Natural pools have formed between the cascades, in which – following the park’s rules – swimming is allowed during certain periods.

The Umauma Experience park surrounding the waterfall offers numerous adventure opportunities for visitors. The braver ones can glide over the waterfall using the 9-line zipline system.

Kealakekua Bay

The bay is known not only for its historical significance but is also considered one of Hawaii’s best diving locations.

The crystal-clear water in the horseshoe-shaped bay often has visibility exceeding 30 meters, providing an exceptional opportunity to explore the underwater world. The coral reef not far from the bay’s shore is home to more than 200 fish species, including rare and endemic species. Divers and snorkelers can swim alongside colorful tropical fish, sea turtles, and occasionally even dolphins.

The site can be accessed by kayak, organized boat tours, or via a steep path leading down from the viewpoint above the bay to the shore.

Punaluʻu Beach

One of Hawaii’s most iconic and unique beaches is known for its black sand.

The beach owes its existence to volcanic activity: when hot lava flows into the sea, it fragments into tiny black sand particles due to sudden cooling.

Hāpuna Beach

Papakōlea Beach

The unique green sand beach is among only four beaches in the world where such special colored sand can be found.

The beach gets its green color from the olivine mineral, which is a volcanic crystal. This mineral comes from the crater of the nearby Pu’u Mahana volcano, located at the southern tip of the island. The emerald green shade of the sand is particularly spectacular in sunshine when the crystalline material glitters vividly.

Accessing the beach is adventurous: a nearly five-kilometer hiking trail leads from the South Point parking lot to the seaside. This path can only be traveled on foot or by off-road vehicle, although off-road driving is not officially permitted. The beach forms a crescent-shaped bay surrounded by steep cliffs. Swimming is not recommended here due to strong currents and wave breaks.

‘Anaeho’omalu Beach

Known by locals simply as „A-Bay”, the beach lies in a beautiful bay on the Kohala coast, with a white sandy shoreline lined with palm trees and interspersed with black lava rock segments.

The beach’s specialty is the two ancient fish ponds along the shore, which are remnants of traditional Hawaiian fish farming. These ponds are connected to the sea through underground channels and once provided fresh fish for the ruling elite. Today, walking around the ponds, native water birds and sometimes sea turtles can be observed.

The water here is relatively calm, often ideal for paddleboarding and kayaking. The beach is also famous for its sunsets.

Kaunaoa Beach (Mauna Kea Beach)

Waimea Canyon

Known as the „Grand Canyon of the Pacific”, this canyon is one of Kauai’s most impressive natural sights and one of the world’s most beautiful gorges.

The nearly 14-mile long and more than 3,000-foot deep canyon was formed over millions of years by the erosion of the Waimea River and the enormous rainfall of Mount Wai’ale’ale. Its reddish-orange walls, deep ravines, and terraced structure create an amazing sight. At the bottom of the canyon, crystal-clear streams and smaller waterfalls make the view even more spectacular.

The canyon offers numerous lookout points with breathtaking panoramic views of the valley and surrounding mountains. The most famous is the Waimea Canyon Lookout, but it’s also worth visiting the lookouts near Puu Hinahina and Koke’e Lodge.

Nā Pali Coast

This breathtaking 17-mile stretch of Kauai’s northern shore is one of the world’s most enchanting and steepest coastlines. It can only be accessed by foot, boat, or helicopter.

Its steep, emerald-green cliffs dramatically rise from the turquoise ocean, in places reaching heights of several hundred meters. The vertical cliff faces are interrupted by narrow valleys and hidden beaches. The unique geological formations of the coastline formed over millions of years through the combined effects of volcanic activity and erosion.

In the valleys along the coast, there were once ancient Hawaiian settlements, traces of which – terraced agricultural areas and sacred sites – can still be discovered today. The area has rich biodiversity: it’s home to rare plants, bird species, and marine life.

One of the most adventurous ways to explore the coastline is by boat or kayak tour, during which visitors can discover caves and waterfalls. Dolphins and turtles are often encountered.

Kalalau Trail

One of the world’s most beautiful and also most dangerous hiking routes runs along the Nā Pali Coast, offering breathtaking views.

The 11-mile trail was used by ancient Hawaiians to reach the Kalalau Valley and its isolated beaches. The hike starts at Ke’e Beach and ends at Kalalau Beach, passing through numerous smaller valleys, streams, and steep cliffs. During the journey, hikers pass through various microclimates: from humid rainforests to rocky hillsides to tropical shores.

The difficulty level of the hike is exceptional; in several sections, hikers must navigate narrow, slippery paths and steep cliff faces, with drops of several hundred meters below. The most dangerous part of the route is the section called „Crawler’s Ledge” where the footpath is only a few centimeters wide and runs along the side of the cliff. A permit is required for the full trail, and at least one night must be spent in the wilderness, but the first two miles – leading to Hanakapi’ai Beach – can be hiked without a permit.

Lihue

The island’s capital and commercial center is located on the eastern shore.

Lihue’s history is tied to the golden age of sugarcane cultivation when the city served as the economic engine of the island. Traces of this heritage can still be discovered at the Grove Farm Homestead Museum, a carefully restored plantation residence.

In the city center is the historic Kauai Museum, which showcases the island’s rich cultural heritage, from ancient Hawaiian civilization to the influences of Polynesian, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, and Portuguese immigrants. The museum’s special collection consists of old photographs, traditional crafts, and artistic creations.

One of its most beautiful attractions is Kalapaki Beach, a crescent-shaped, protected bay ideal for swimming, beginner surfing, and sunbathing.

Wailua Falls

One of the highest and most spectacular natural wonders of eastern Kauai plunges 173 feet into a deep, emerald-green pool.

The waterfall is located along the Wailua River, Kauai’s only navigable river. To approach the waterfall, you must hike a beautiful 2-mile trail that leads through dense rainforest. Along the path, hikers encounter diverse tropical vegetation, birdsong, and seasonal smaller waterways.

When visitors reach the waterfall, an amazing sight awaits them: a huge mass of water crashes with a thunderous roar into the crystal-clear pool, surrounded by lush vegetation and vertical rock walls. The braver visitors can swim in the pool. The waterfall is particularly impressive after rainy periods when the water volume increases, and the cascade can be seen in its full glory.

Opaeka’a Falls

One of Kauai’s most easily accessible and yet most beautiful natural attractions, located along a tributary of the Wailua River.

The name of the waterfall in Hawaiian means „rolling shrimp”, referring to the shrimp that were once abundant in the pool below the waterfall. The nearly 150-foot high waterfall cascades down in two branches over a cliff covered with dense, green vegetation and has abundant water flow year-round. The landscape surrounding the waterfall is impressive: lush mountains, dense forests, and the valley of the Wailua River.

The specialty of the waterfall is that it can be viewed from a comfortable lookout point, easily accessible by car along Kuamoo Road (Highway 580). From the lookout point, there is not only an unparalleled view of the waterfall but also of the Wailua River valley and the distant mountains.

Koke’e State Park

A magical nature reserve in western Kauai, offering numerous hiking trails, breathtaking viewpoints, and a unique ecosystem.

The park, covering more than 10,000 acres, is located adjacent to Waimea Canyon and features diverse habitats: from wet mountain forests to drier plateaus. One of the park’s most special plants is the koa tree, native only to the Hawaiian Islands. Besides the native flora, many rare bird species can be observed here, such as the endangered akikiki or the puaiohi.

At the center of the park is the Koke’e Natural History Museum, which presents the area’s history, geology, and biodiversity through interactive exhibitions.

The park has more than 45 miles of hiking trails of varying difficulty levels: from easy walks to challenging, full-day hikes. The park’s most famous lookout points, Kalalau Lookout and Puu O Kila Lookout, offer magnificent panoramic views of the Nā Pali Coast.

Kalalau Lookout

One of Kauai’s most breathtaking viewpoints offers an incredible panorama from an elevation of 4,000 feet of the Kalalau Valley, the cliffs of the Nā Pali Coast, and the Pacific Ocean.

The lookout is located in Koke’e State Park and is relatively easily accessible by paved road. From the viewpoint, visitors can look into the Kalalau Valley, which was home to ancient Hawaiians and which today can only be accessed on foot or by boat. The steep walls of the valley are covered with dense forest, and when the clouds lift, the ocean undulating at the bottom of the valley provides a breathtaking sight.

Spouting Horn

One of the most spectacular natural wonders of Kauai’s southern coast is a special geyser-like phenomenon that has become one of the most photographed locations on the island.

The phenomenon occurs at a lava rock where waves are forced into an underground lava tube, and due to pressure, can shoot up to 50 feet high through a small opening. The water jet becomes particularly impressive during strong waves and is often accompanied by a characteristic hissing, whistling sound. According to Hawaiian legends, the whistling is the voice of Kaikapu, a mighty lizard that a young warrior, Liko, trapped in this lava tube.

The park developed around the Spouting Horn allows observation of the phenomenon from a safe distance. The area is especially popular at sunset.

Fern Grotto

One of Kauai’s most romantic and mystical locations is a cave-like recess covered with ferns along the Wailua River. It was once accessible only to the Hawaiian royal family.

The natural formation was created by thousands of years of erosion by the river, and its walls are densely covered with various ferns, mosses, and other tropical plants. The cave has special acoustics, which has made it a popular venue for weddings and musical performances for a long time.

The cave can only be reached by water, usually as part of an organized tour. On the boat trip upstream, participants learn about local history, flora and fauna, and Hawaiian culture.

Near the Fern Grotto is also Secret Falls (Uluwehi Falls). It’s accessible after a short kayak trip and hike, leading to a beautiful smaller waterfall and natural pool.

Allerton Garden

Located in southern Kauai, it’s known as one of the world’s most beautiful and unique tropical gardens.

The garden was developed in the 1930s by Robert Allerton and his adopted son, John Gregg Allerton, on a former royal estate. The 200-acre area was carefully designed into „garden rooms” separated by hedges, walls, and natural boundaries. The garden has numerous special spaces: there’s a bamboo forest, tropical fruit orchard, waterfront garden, and an impressive Moreton Bay fig tree avenue.

Perhaps the most famous parts of the garden are the giant fig trees, whose enormous aerial roots give the area an almost otherworldly atmosphere – it’s no coincidence that scenes from „Jurassic Park” were filmed here.

The garden is significant not only from a botanical perspective but also represents artistic value: antique statues, fountains, and carefully designed water features make the visit even more attractive. The garden can only be visited as part of a guided tour, during which visitors learn about the history of the garden, the origin and significance of the plants, and the challenges of design and maintenance.

Hanalei Bay

The crescent-shaped Hanalei Bay is one of the most iconic and picturesque locations on Kauai’s northern coast, characterized by lush, green mountains, crystal-clear water, and golden sand beaches.

The town of Hanalei, situated on the bay’s shore, is a charming, laid-back settlement that has preserved its authentic Hawaiian character. Poipu Beach

The beach actually encompasses two sandy bays separated by a narrow strip of land, Nukumoi Point. The eastern bay is quieter, has shallower water, and is ideal for families with small children, while the deeper water of the western section offers opportunities for more experienced swimmers and divers. The beach is protected by coral reefs, which reduce the force of the waves while offering excellent opportunities for snorkeling and observing colorful tropical fish.

One of the special features of Poipu Beach is that Hawaiian monk seals are often seen resting on the shore, as well as sea turtles grazing in the shallow water. Ke’e Beach
