Andalusia, Spain’s southernmost region is known for its beautiful cities, mosques, bullfights, magnificent horses, and sherry. And of course, for its wonderful beaches, where you can still comfortably swim in the sunshine even in late autumn!

The region, which borders both Gibraltar and Portugal, stretches from the several-thousand-meter peaks of the Sierra Nevada all the way to the sandy beaches of the Costa del Sol.

It’s worth visiting Andalusia even in winter, as there’s a good chance you’ll travel from winter into pleasant spring weather!

Andalusia attractions

Sevilla

The center of Andalusia is a blend of Spanish Mediterranean atmosphere and Moorish architectural style with countless attractions.

Spain’s 4th largest city is home to the world’s largest Gothic cathedral. But the Alcazar is also a must-see, which as a Moorish royal palace symbolizes medieval wealth.

And of course, you must attend a flamenco performance, as this is also an integral part of the Andalusian lifestyle.

Seville attractions

Seville – a place where every part is a true wonder

Malaga

Picasso’s birthplace is the center of the sunny coast and one of the favorite tourist destinations, thanks to its excellent wines, mild climate, and extraordinarily high number of sunny hours.

Malaga also has a palace converted from a Moorish fortress (Alcazaba), which once consisted of more than 100 towers. The city’s other attractions include Europe’s 3rd largest cathedral and a beautiful bullfighting arena.

Malaga can be an excellent starting point for the coastal towns to the south, as well as for the mountainous inland region!

Granada

Besides Córdoba, Granada is a must-visit, especially if you’re staying in Malaga. Its city center is one of the most beautiful medieval legacies.

Among its historic buildings, the Alhambra fortress and palace is one of the country’s most important monuments, which UNESCO declared a World Heritage Site in 1984, together with the garden known as Generalife and the Albaicín neighborhood.

The Granada Cathedral is considered Spain’s first Renaissance church. In the Royal Chapel belonging to the cathedral, you can find the tombs of the Catholic Monarchs: Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon, as well as Queen Joanna I ‘the Mad’ of Castile and King Philip I ‘the Handsome’ of Castile.

Costa del Sol

The most famous of Andalusia’s four coastal sections. Its name means sunny coast, referring to the fact that the sun shines an average of 320 days a year. It’s not called Europe’s California for nothing.

Spain’s and thus Europe’s southernmost point, separated from Africa by a strait only 14 km wide at La Línea and Gibraltar.

Several popular holiday destinations can be found along the coast, the most famous being Marbella. There are also several wonderful towns near Malaga, such as Torremolinos, Fuengirola, and Benalmádena.

Ronda

According to many, Spain’s most beautifully situated settlement is this city perched 750 meters high.

Its beauty comes from two massive rock sections and the connecting New Bridge. The sight of houses built on the rocks and the bridge has made the city of Ronda unique.

Several architectural styles can be discovered in its architecture, as several ethnic groups ruled the region. This can be seen in the houses on the narrow streets and alleys.

Here too, you shouldn’t miss visiting the bullfighting arena (one of Spain’s oldest) and the Moorish palace.

Cádiz

Located in the southwestern part of Andalusia on a peninsula jutting into the Bay of Cádiz on the Atlantic Ocean coast.

Its old town preserves Andalusian traditions, which are reflected in narrow streets leading to small squares.

The city founded by the Phoenicians was an important port city even in ancient times, which still forms an integral part of Cádiz today. This is why about 160 watchtowers were built in and around the city over the centuries.

The city’s most popular part is the San Sebastian fortress and the nearby golden sandy beach, La Caleta.

Córdoba

The city at the foot of Sierra Morena was one of the world’s largest cities in the 10th century, making it a cultural and economic stronghold.

The city is also called the city of three cultures, as it represents a blend of Jewish, Christian, and Arab influences. Its city center is wonderful, which is why it’s part of the UNESCO World Heritage. It’s full of small, narrow cobblestone streets, beautiful squares, and characteristic inner courtyards (patios).

One of its most beautiful parts is the Puente Romano de Córdoba, the Roman bridge, from which there is a magnificent view of the city. Another unmissable attraction is the Mezquita, the former Moorish mosque converted into a cathedral. Its interior is made unique by 850 columns built from marble, jasper, and granite.

Córdoba attractions, museums, weather

Caminito del Rey

This stunning footpath carved into the cliffs is located north of Málaga.

Originally built for hydroelectric workers in the early 20th century, it was long known as „the most dangerous path in the world” after its condition deteriorated to the point where it became life-threatening.

It was renovated and made safe in 2015 and has since become a popular tourist attraction, offering dramatic views of the Guadalhorce River canyon. Bridges, walkways, and sections carved into the rock alternate along the approximately 8 km long trail.

Zahara de la Sierra

This charming little village is located in the heart of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park.

It sits atop a rock, and the ruins of a medieval Moorish castle dominate the panorama. The village is surrounded by an artificial lake, the Embalse de Zahara-El Gastor, whose turquoise waters contrast with the white houses and green landscape.

Its narrow cobbled streets, charming squares and magnificent views make it a popular destination.

Setenil de las Bodegas

This unique Andalusian village is famous for its houses built directly into the cliffs along the river.

The gorge carved by the Rio Trejo creates a special atmosphere, with the rock walls serving as a natural roof over some streets and buildings. This unique architectural solution, „houses under the rocks”, makes Setenil an unforgettable experience.

The village is also known for its delicious cuisine, especially its pork specialties.

Antequera

This historic town in the heart of the province of Málaga has a rich heritage.

It is known for its dolmens, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and offer a fascinating glimpse into prehistoric times. The town has a Moorish fortress, the Alcazaba, which offers panoramic views of the countryside, as well as several Renaissance and Baroque churches.

Due to its strategic location, Antequera is also known as the „heart of Andalusia” as it lies halfway between the main Andalusian cities.

Gibraltar

Although it doesn’t belong to Spain, the city-state is a must during an Andalusian trip! Gibraltar is essentially a 425 m high, 1250 m wide limestone cliff, the Rock of Gibraltar.

The British-controlled city is a perfect blend of English and Spanish-Andalusian style and atmosphere.

Even entering the city-state is quite interesting. You have to walk or drive across an airport runway to enter the city. When a plane arrives, we get a red signal with a barrier.

If you’re in Gibraltar, it’s definitely worth seeing the 400-meter-high robust rock, which offers a breathtaking panorama. You can also reach it by cable car.

Colomares Castle

And finally, a building located in the town of Benalmádena.

The extremely unique castle-like structure was built at the end of the 20th century by Dr. Esteban Martín and his two assistants in memory of Christopher Columbus and the Age of Discovery.

It combines elements of many styles, such as Byzantine, Roman, Gothic, and Mudéjar, creating a truly unique building. The view of the beach is also very beautiful, so it’s definitely worth visiting!

Córdoba is one of Spain’s most significant historical cities, where traces of Roman and Arab rule are still felt today.

The city was once the seat of a caliphate, when in the 10th century it was considered one of the largest and most advanced cities in the Western world. Andalusia’s third-largest city after Seville and Málaga.

The Great Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba (Mezquita-Catedral)

One of the world’s most unique sacred buildings, it remarkably combines Islamic and Christian architecture. Founded in 784, the mosque offers a stunning visual experience with its 856 red-and-white striped columns and horseshoe arches. The massive prayer hall’s forest-like space creates an unparalleled atmosphere, where columns stand in endless rows.

The building’s history mirrors the city’s history: originally a Roman temple, then a Visigothic temple stood on the site before Emir Abd ar-Rahman I converted it into a mosque. After the Reconquista in 1236, Christians took it over, and in the 16th century they built a Renaissance-style cathedral in the middle of the mosque. This unusual combination makes the structure unique.

The mihrab, the prayer niche facing Mecca, boasts unparalleled mosaic decoration created by Byzantine masters from gold and glass. The UNESCO World Heritage Site attracts several million visitors every year.

Palace of the Christian Monarchs (Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos)

This impressive fortress-palace was built in 1328 by order of King Alfonso XIII and served as the Andalusian residence of Christian rulers. Within these walls, Isabella V and Ferdinand II decided in 1486 to support Christopher Columbus’s expedition. The palace was a protected complex with four corner towers, surrounded by Moorish-style gardens.

The building’s inner courtyards and halls are adorned with beautiful tile decorations, mosaics, and fountains that evoke Moorish architectural traditions. The Baths are particularly noteworthy with Roman and Arab bath remains. The walls and towers offer unparalleled views of the city and the Guadalquivir River.

The greatest treasure, however, is the garden spread across terraces with palm trees, orange groves, and pools. The water surfaces and vegetation arranged along visual axes are perfect examples of Moorish garden architecture. The evening light show makes the place particularly spectacular.

Your garden is perhaps even more beautiful

Barrio Judío

Home to the medieval Jewish community, today it’s Córdoba’s most enchanting neighborhood, where history can be felt in every corner. During its golden age from the 10th-14th centuries, one of Europe’s largest and most influential Jewish communities lived here. The philosopher Maimonides was also born here in 1135, whose statue stands in Tiberiades Square.

Walking through the narrow, winding streets among whitewashed houses, we experience the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. The walls of buildings are decorated with flowerpots, which are particularly colorful in spring. Calleja de las Flores (Alley of the Flowers) is one of the most photographed locations, from where the mosque tower is also visible among the flowers.

At the heart of the quarter is the Synagogue, built in 1315, one of Spain’s three synagogues surviving from the Middle Ages. The small but beautiful interior space features stucco decorations that are mixtures of Hebrew inscriptions and geometric patterns.

The small street is the most beautiful part of the neighborhood

Roman Bridge (Puente Romano)

The bridge spanning the Guadalquivir River was built in the 1st century during the reign of Augustus Caesar and was the city’s only bridge for nearly two thousand years. The 247-meter-long structure originally boasted a 17-arch design, of which 16 have survived. The panorama is particularly spectacular when viewed from the Mezquita.

In the middle of the bridge stands the statue of Archangel Saint Raphael, Córdoba’s patron saint, who according to legend saved the city from the plague. Crossing the bridge, we reach the Calahorra Tower, which originally served the city’s defense and now houses a museum. At the southern end of the bridge is also the building of a Moorish-era water mill.

At dusk, the view is most spectacular, when the bridge and the mosque-cathedral rising in the background create a stunning picture. Today the bridge is only open to pedestrians, making it an excellent spot for peaceful walks and photography.

Torre de la Calahorra

The fortress tower standing at the southern end of the Roman Bridge was built in the 12th century to protect the city from attacks from the south. As a characteristic example of Moorish architecture, it was a strategically important defensive point. The tower’s structure, with its cruciform floor plan and massive walls, performed a perfect defensive function.

Today the tower houses the Living Museum of Three Cultures, which presents the coexistence of Córdoba’s Roman, Jewish, and Islamic traditions using multimedia tools. The exhibition pays particular attention to the period when the city was the capital of the caliphate and functioned as a center of religious tolerance. Through interactive demonstrations, we can learn about everyday life in medieval Córdoba.

From the tower’s upper level, there’s a stunning panorama of the Roman Bridge, the Mezquita, and the historic city center. It’s especially recommended to visit at sunset.

Palacio de Viana

This 15th-century aristocratic palace is famous for its twelve beautiful courtyards (patios), each designed in a different style and atmosphere. The Viana family residence was an inhabited building until 1980, when it was converted into a museum. The building complex covers 6,500 square meters and is one of Córdoba’s finest examples of Andalusian palace architecture.

Each patio has a unique character: there’s the Naranjos patio filled with orange trees, the Jardín patio decorated with Mediterranean plants, or the Archivo patio with geometric patterns. The careful arrangement of fountains, pottery, and flowers is visible everywhere. Visiting the patios is a true Andalusian experience, where the splashing of water, the scent of flowers, and cool shade make the atmosphere perfect.

Inside the palace is a richly furnished museum displaying the aristocratic family’s furniture, paintings, carpets, and porcelain collection. The library preserves more than 7,000 volumes. Every detail of aristocratic life comes alive in the magnificent halls.

Medina Azahara

The brilliant capital of the Córdoba Caliphate, a palace city built by Abd ar-Rahman III between 936-940, located on the western edge of the city, about 8 kilometers away. Named after the caliph’s favorite wife, Azahara, the city once housed 10,000 people, was built on three terraces on the hillside, and competed with Baghdad and Constantinople in its luxury and beauty.

The city stood for barely 70 years before Berber troops plundered and destroyed it in 1010. For centuries it fell into oblivion, its ruins were reused as building materials. Archaeological excavations began in the 20th century, continuously revealing new details of the former splendor.

The restored remains of the Great Portico, the Throne Room, and the House of Baghdad give a taste of the city’s former greatness. The richly carved stucco decorations, marble columns, and water basins are still impressive. The museum on site displays excavated finds – statues, coins, ceramic objects – helping to understand the culture of the Umayyad Caliphate. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2018.

Royal Stables (Caballerizas Reales)

King Philip II founded this massive stable complex in 1570 with the aim of creating the purebred Andalusian horse. The building was designed in Renaissance style by Hernán Ruiz II, with huge vaulted halls that can still accommodate 40 horses today. The purpose of the royal stables was not only breeding but also training noble horses.

Today, spectacular horse shows are held in the stables every week, combining the art of classical Spanish riding, dressage elements, and flamenco dance. White and black Andalusian horses perform in traditional costumes in choreography showcasing Spanish equestrian traditions.

In the museum section of the building, we can learn about the history of Spanish equestrian culture, equestrian equipment, and horse breeding traditions. Walking around the surrounding area, horse statues and well-maintained gardens are also visible.

Plaza de la Corredera

Andalusia’s only completely enclosed, square-shaped main square was built in 1683 in Spanish Baroque style, modeled after Madrid’s Plaza Mayor. The brick-colored, four-story buildings embrace the square, beneath whose arcades shops and restaurants line up. The square’s history is full of events: bullfights, public executions, and markets were held here.

Over the past centuries, the square’s function has changed: in the 19th century it operated as a marketplace, then in the 20th century it became a residential neighborhood. The renovation carried out in the 1990s restored its original beauty, and today it has become a favorite meeting place for locals. On Saturday mornings, a flea market also operates here, where antiques and handicraft products are available.

The square’s cafés and tapas bars are particularly lively in the evening, when locals sit on terraces to chat. The central area is open, where concerts and cultural events are often held.

Templo Romano

The remains of the Roman temple in the heart of the city were built in the 1st century during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Only a fragment of the once massive structure remains, but the tall Corinthian columns are still impressive. The temple stood in the Forum Provinciae area, which was the religious and administrative center of the province of Hispania Baetica.

The ruins came to light in the 1950s during the expansion of the city hall, when archaeologists were surprised to discover the massive column remains. Excavations and reconstructions carried out since then have restored ten columns, which were parts of the original 32-column building.

The current cityscape presents an oddly beautiful contrast of the modern Ayuntamiento building and the ancient ruins. The temple is particularly imposing when illuminated at night. The area is freely accessible and an excellent site for understanding Córdoba’s Roman past.

The Baroque-style monastery founded in the 16th century fulfilled its original function as a monastery for the Mercedarian monks.

The central patio of the imposing building complex is surrounded by a two-story arcade decorated with huge white marble columns, considered one of Andalusia’s most beautiful inner courtyards. In the 19th century, after the dissolution of religious orders, it functioned as a prison, then in the late 20th century it regained its original beauty through comprehensive renovation.

Today it’s the administrative seat of Córdoba Province, housing the offices of the Diputación Provincial. Freely accessible on weekdays, where fountains, orange groves, and monumental architecture create a magical atmosphere. The palace’s rich stucco decorations and painted ceilings are excellent examples of Baroque art.

Museo Arqueológico de Córdoba

The museum, housed in the Renaissance Páez de Castillejo Palace, has been collecting archaeological treasures from Córdoba and its surroundings since its foundation in 1867.

The building itself has art-historical significance, its inner patio is typical Andalusian style, where the exhibition displays objects thousands of years old. The museum achieved its current form through continuous expansions and renovations.

The collection chronologically presents the region’s history from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages: from the Paleolithic to the Visigothic period. Particularly rich are the Iberian, Roman, and Islamic-era materials, which include bronze statues, mosaics, vessels, and jewelry. The Roman-era sarcophagi and Moorish-era bronze statues are among the most valuable pieces. The Iberian Hall on the museum’s ground floor features a particularly spectacular collection, while Moorish-era objects dominate on the upper floor.

Museum of Fine Arts (Museo de Bellas Artes de Córdoba)

The art museum opened in 1862 in a Renaissance hospital building is one of Andalusia’s oldest art institutions. The former Hospital de la Caridad building has a patio, where the former chapel is now the museum’s most imposing exhibition space. The building’s history is intertwined with Córdoba’s charitable institutions’ past.

The collection focuses on Spanish painting from the 14th century to the present, with special emphasis on Córdoba masters. The works of Julio Romero de Torres, Córdoba’s most famous painter, received a separate room where female nudes and Andalusian-themed works dominate. The museum also preserves works by Murillo, Zurbarán, and Valdés Leal.

Visitors can learn about Baroque religious paintings, Renaissance altarpieces, and 19th-20th century Spanish artists. The sculpture collection features works by Mateo Inurria and other local sculptors.

Museo Julio Romero de Torres

The museum set up in the former home of the Córdoba artist (1874-1930) uniquely presents Romero de Torres’s life work. The museum opened in 1931 includes the originally furnished home where the painter lived and worked.

The collection preserves Romero de Torres’s most significant works, who painted Andalusian female figures, flamenco themes, and Córdoba atmosphere in his unique style. His works – such as „La Chiquita Piconera” or „Naranjas y Limones” – which move between symbolism and realism are iconic pieces of Spanish art. The portraits of the artist’s models convey particularly intense emotions.

Part of the visitor experience is viewing the original studio, where the painter’s palette, personal belongings, and memorabilia are also visible. The museum’s audiovisual presentations help understand Romero de Torres’s artistic world and the cultural environment of early 20th-century Córdoba.

Córdoba weather: when is the best time to travel?

Córdoba has a Mediterranean-continental climate, which means hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. The city is located inland in Andalusia, far from the coast, so temperature fluctuations are greater than in coastal cities. The four seasons of the year are well distinguished, though spring and autumn are particularly pleasant.

Spring (March-May):

The most beautiful time of the year, when nature comes alive and the famous flower festival, Patios de Córdoba, takes place in May. The temperature ranges between 15-25°C, ideal for pleasant walks. The city is at its most colorful then, every patio fills with flowers.

Summer (June-August):

An extremely hot period when the temperature often exceeds 40°C, in July and August it can even reach 45°C. Locals take siestas during midday hours, life only picks up in the evening. Tourist attractions can be visited comfortably in the morning and late afternoon.

Autumn (September-November):

The temperature gradually decreases to 25-15°C, September is still warm, but from October it becomes more pleasant. Some rainy days can be expected, but generally sunny, pleasant weather is characteristic. An excellent alternative to the crowded spring months.

Winter (December-February):

A mild but rainy period with daytime temperatures of 10-15°C. At night it can cool below 5°C. Frost occurs rarely, snow almost never falls. Tourist numbers are low, the city is calmer.

Best time to travel Córdoba:

The most ideal time to visit Córdoba is between April-May and October-November when the temperature is between 20-28°C and sunny days dominate. The May flower festival is a special experience, although the city is more crowded then. Autumn is quieter, with fewer tourists, while offering pleasant temperatures and lower prices.

Only choose summer months if you can handle the heat and plan early morning and evening activities. Winter is an economical choice, but you should expect occasional rain and cooler weather.

Alicante had been on my plans for a long time, and it finally happened last week. However, instead of three days, I could only stay in Spain for two.

The Wizz Air flight departed early in the morning on Friday, January 9th, and I was supposed to return home Monday morning. Unfortunately, a friend’s funeral was scheduled for Monday, which I only found out about on Thursday afternoon. So I quickly looked for a Sunday return flight: although there is a direct Wizz flight that day, the ticket was 140 €, which I won’t pay for travel within Europe. What I booked instead: a morning flight from Alicante to Treviso, then an evening flight to Budapest (both Ryanair), the two together cost 60 €.

Alicante

The plane landed at 10 o’clock with a half-hour delay. Just getting off the plane in the pleasant weather was an experience, as I had left for the airport at home in the morning at -14 degrees. 🙂

Bus C-6 runs between the city center and the airport, departing approximately every 15 minutes. A one-way ticket costs €4.60 and can be purchased from the ticket inspector at the stop. You can also get off at the bus station in the city, otherwise Porta del Mar is the final stop (this is the harbor and beach area).

Since the attractions are quite concentrated, I explored the city’s main sights on foot. First, I wandered around the downtown area. The pedestrian street, Carrer Sant Francesc, is famous for its mushrooms. They’re fun creations that make the otherwise average street atmospheric. The harbor area and the promenade are a typical seaside quarter with wonderful palm trees. The castle rising above the city is most beautifully visible from the harbor.

On the other side of the harbor begins the beach, Playa del Postiguet. This is a few hundred meters of sandy beach where many people were sunbathing in the pleasant 16 degrees (it felt like more when the wind wasn’t blowing). Some even dared to go into the cool water. 🙂

Before heading to the castle, I popped into the MUBAG Museum of Fine Arts. Located next to the cathedral, it displays works across three floors. Admission is free, and it’s absolutely essential for anyone who loves paintings. It’s an exceptionally high-quality museum.

I walked up to Castell de Santa Bàrbara from the El Barrio neighborhood to the southwest, which is the easiest and most beautiful route. Even on the way up, there are wonderful views of the city. The castle itself covers quite a large area with several viewpoints. Admission is free, and there’s a restaurant and two cafés. It’s worth conquering the slopes for the views. 🙂

On the way down, I headed toward the center of the El Barrio neighborhood, where you can stroll through beautiful, flowery alleys. Together with the castle, you can take great photos. There are also several small squares with restaurants and cafés, worth stopping somewhere to enjoy the atmosphere. I really loved this old town area.

I walked over to the other viewpoint, Castell de Sant Ferran, which is located north of the downtown area. This one is less popular, only a few of us were hanging around. I took some photos, but after the Barbera castle, this doesn’t offer anything extra. But since it’s not far from downtown, it’s worth a visit.

I walked down to the harbor area, but on the way I popped into the Museu de les Fogueres. This is an exhibition of a few rooms where you can see funny creations. It’s free, but you can also get through it in a few minutes.

I also checked out the harbor and the promenade in the evening, all lit up, which is perhaps even more beautiful than during the day.

Benidorm

On Saturday, Benidorm and the eastern part of Alicante, San Juan Playa, were on the schedule. The easiest way to get to Benidorm is by suburban train (actually a fast tram). It departs from Luceros station in downtown Alicante and the journey takes about 70 minutes. You can buy tickets from a vending machine, €2.80 for a one-way trip.

From Benidorm train station, it’s about 1.5 km to the old town area and the beach. There were lots of English and American tourists, you can clearly see that the wealthier class stays here. Mirador del Castell is the main viewpoint, a balcony-like section on the beach. You can see well in both directions along the coast and the skyscrapers, and take nice pictures.

From here I headed west on the promenade along Platja de Ponent. There are tons of restaurants and bars, almost all of them were full. Although it was 17 degrees, the brilliant sunshine and the sand made it feel warmer. I took advantage of the good weather, it was nice sitting on the bench in a short-sleeved shirt. 🙂

On the western part of the coast, a mountain peak rises, and from the Tossal de la Cala viewpoint, there’s the most beautiful panorama of the city and the beach. It’s about a 15-minute walk with a steep climb, but the view makes up for everything. I definitely recommend going up there!

From here I walked to Cala Finestrat train station and took the train back to Alicante.

San Juan Playa

This is the eastern part of Alicante, where there’s a several-kilometer-long sandy beach and promenade. The northern section is called Playa de Mutxavista, and I got off at the Carrabiners stop.

I walked all the way to the southern end of the beach, which was about 3 km. I walked partly along the water in the sand, enjoying the pleasant weather and the fine sandy beach. The promenade is less developed, with only a few bars and restaurants. Because of this, there aren’t big crowds either, which is exactly what makes this part atmospheric.

There’s a tram stop on the street parallel to the beach, line 4 goes to Luceros, line 5 to Porta del Mar terminus. The ticket is €1.45 and you can buy it from a vending machine on the tram.

In summary

For anyone who wants to travel to a pleasant place with nice weather in winter, Alicante is the perfect choice! I must say, Spain is a big favorite of mine, especially the coastal cities (Barcelona, Malaga). And the prices are similar to those at home, so you don’t have to dig deep into your wallet. 🙂

The Basque Country is famous not only for its spectacular geographical features but also for its unique language, gastronomy, and strong cultural identity.

The region located in northern Spain, on the coast of the Bay of Biscay, is truly a special region alongside Catalonia. The Basques have their own language, Euskara, which is unrelated to any other European language – this language still lives on in the streets, restaurant menus, and local communities. The region’s gastronomy is world-renowned: it has the highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants per square kilometer, and the pintxo culture (the Basque tapas variant) is a true art form.

The Basque Country consists of three Spanish provinces: Vizcaya (Bizkaia), Guipúzcoa (Gipuzkoa), and Álava (Araba). The landscape is extremely diverse: from the dramatic coastline of the Bay of Biscay to green mountain ranges, everything can be found within a few hours’ drive.

Best places in Basque Country

Bilbao

This large port city has undergone radical renewal in recent decades and has now become a meeting point of modern art and industrial heritage. The city built along the Nervión River once owed its wealth to heavy industry, and today it is experiencing a cultural renaissance. The city is a perfect starting point for exploring the region, while offering enough activities for days on its own.

The opening of the Guggenheim Museum in 1997 radically transformed Bilbao’s image. Frank Gehry’s titanium and glass creation is now the city’s symbol, and the museum building itself is as spectacular as the contemporary art collection it houses. Walking along the riverfront, visitors are greeted by Jeff Koons’ dog made of flowers, „Puppy,” and Louise Bourgeois’ giant spider sculpture, „Maman”.

The old town, Casco Viejo, with its narrow streets and main square called Plaza Nueva, is the perfect place for a pintxo tour. Along the seven original streets – Las Siete Calles – bars line up, where every counter presents local specialties like an artistic exhibition. The Mercado de la Ribera, one of Europe’s largest covered markets, provides insight into the Basques’ relationship with food culture.

Bilbao’s most famous building is the Guggenheim Museum

San Sebastián

The city on the Bay of Biscay coast has been attracting European aristocracy since the Belle Époque and has maintained its elegant atmosphere to this day. La Concha Bay’s crescent-shaped sandy beach is located in the heart of the city, surrounded by Art Nouveau buildings and the green slopes of Mount Urgull. The city’s official name is Donostia in Euskara, and locals use both names equally.

Parte Vieja, the old town, is world-famous for its pintxo bars – it has the most Michelin-starred restaurants per capita in the world. Alongside restaurants named Arzak, Akelarre, and Martin Berasategui, countless small eateries offer dishes made from excellent ingredients. Besides restaurant culture, groups operate their own gastronomic clubs, „txokos” where men cook together.

The old funicular railway to Mount Igueldo leads up to the city’s panoramic viewpoint, from where the entire bay can be seen. During the walk to Monte Urgull, a sculpture park and the Mota Castle await visitors. The promenade along the beach, the paseo, fills with strollers every evening – the evening stroll is an important part of local social life.

Vitoria-Gasteiz

The medieval core of the Basque Country’s capital, built inland on a fertile plain, harmoniously combines history and modern environmental protection.

The city won the title of European Green Capital in 2012 and is still proud to provide the most green space per capita in Spain. The streets of the almond-shaped old town are named after saints, and each street corresponds to a letter of the alphabet.

The Plaza de la Virgen Blanca and the medieval Los Arquillos arcades connect the old town with the 18th-century neoclassical expansion. The Santa María Cathedral can be visited on an interactive tour titled „From Founders to Grandchildren” where visitors can explore the continuously restored building wearing construction helmets. This special program also drew inspiration from Ken Follett’s novel „The Pillars of the Earth”.

Around the city runs a green ring, the „Anillo Verde”, a system of six natural parks connected by walkways and bicycle paths. The Salburua wetlands are particularly rich in wildlife, where herons and otters can be seen. The city’s museums – especially the Fournier Museum dedicated to Basque playing cards – provide unique insights into local culture. In August, the city takes to the streets for the Virgen Blanca festival, when the Celedón puppet symbolically descends from the cathedral tower on an umbrella.

Capital of the Basque Country

Hondarribia

This fortified small town near the French border has beautifully preserved its medieval character, while across the river are Hendaye and the French coast. The winding streets among colorful wooden houses create a wonderful atmosphere. Due to the city’s strategic importance, it functioned as a fortress for centuries, and its walls still stand today.

Calle Mayor and the surrounding streets’ wooden facades offer an unparalleled sight: each house is a different color, and carved balconies adorned with flowers highlight details at every corner. The Parador on Plaza de Armas, a luxury hotel converted from a former royal castle, dominates the city imposingly. The massive tower of the Church of Santa María de la Asunción y del Manzano is visible from afar.

The Marina district, once home to fishermen, shows a completely different character. Small bistros line its narrow streets, offering fresh fish and seafood. From the port, small boats take visitors across the river to Hendaye – this ten-minute trip between two countries is a special experience. In summer, during local festivals, young and old alike parade in Basque traditional dress, and traditional music fills the streets.

Mundaka

One of the world’s most famous surf spots is located in a quiet fishing village where the Guernica estuary meets the Atlantic Ocean.

The wave break from below caused by the river mouth creates a perfect barrel that, as a left-breaking wave, can be up to 400 meters long. World championships often visit here, but the village has maintained its calm, authentic atmosphere.

The houses around the small port are colorful and friendly, where local fishermen take out their boats every morning. The Hermita de Santa Katalina, a small chapel on the hillside, offers a romantic view of the entire estuary and ocean. From here, you can clearly see the waves forming and surfers waiting in line for the perfect wave.

Being part of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, the Mundaka area is rich in wildlife. The estuary is an important resting place for migratory birds, and many species can be observed especially in spring.

Lekeitio

This medieval fishing village has preserved its authentic character and still has an active port. The Gothic tower of St. Peter’s Basilica greets from afar, and the church itself dominates the town’s main square. Colorful houses line up around the port.

Isuntza Beach is located in the heart of the town, and at low tide, you can walk to San Nicolás Island. This small rocky island offers a special sight, and the upward path on the island provides a beautiful view of the town and surrounding coastline. The other beach, Karraspio, is also a popular bathing spot among locals.

Throughout its history, the town has played an important role in regional life several times. The old town hall and palaces testify to past wealth brought by fishing and whaling. In early September, during the St. Anthony festival, a special ceremony takes place: local men try to tear off goose necks from a rope-supported pole above the port while the crowd cheers them on.

Zumaia

This small town is the meeting point of the Flysch cliffs, where geology enthusiasts find world-renowned formations. The layering of coastal rocks tells 60 million years of history and is part of the UNESCO Geopark. The rocks are so regularly layered, as if giant book pages were stacked beside the ocean.

Several scenes from the Game of Thrones series were filmed here, and the dramatic cliff faces of Itzurun Beach are immediately recognizable from the screen. Walking along the beach at low tide, the layers can be seen up close, and with a guide, the geological history truly comes to life. The coastal walk leads toward Deba and offers breathtaking panoramas throughout.

The town houses the Zuloaga Museum, which presents the works of Basque painter Ignacio Zuloaga in a medieval Santiago church. The painter lived in the early 20th century, and his works bring traditional scenes of Basque life to life. The town itself is small but charming, located at the mouth of the Urola River, and is an excellent starting point for exploring the area.

Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve

The area protected by UNESCO in 1984 extends around the estuary of the Oka River, where the meeting of salt and fresh water has created unique wildlife.

On the 22,000-hectare area, marshes, sand dunes, forests, and traditional Basque villages form a unique ecosystem. The reserve stretches between the towns of Mundaka, Gernika, and Bermeo, and shows a different face in every season.

The heart of the reserve is the viewpoint near the Santimamiñe Cave, from where the entire estuary can be seen. In autumn and spring, it serves as a resting place for more than 250 bird species during migration, and bird watchers should choose this period. The hermandad forests – community forests managed collectively for centuries – preserve an ancient Basque tradition in land management.

In the Santimamiñe Cave, 14,000-year-old cave paintings can be seen depicting bison, horses, and goats. Bicycle paths run through the area, and small villages – like Kortezubi or Gautegiz Arteaga – provide insight into rural Basque life.

Aizkorri-Aratz National Park

This mountain range is the backbone of the Basque Country, where the Aizkorri peak at 1,528 meters is the region’s highest point. The limestone mountain range’s rock faces, green pastures, and secret caves are a hiker’s paradise. One branch of the Santiago pilgrimage route also passes through the area, and pilgrims have been visiting the Arantzazu Monastery for centuries.

The Arantzazu Sanctuary, built into the mountainside at 750 meters altitude, creates a surprising contrast with the surrounding nature through its modern architecture. The 20th-century building also contains works by Basque sculptors Jorge Oteiza and Eduardo Chillida. The monastery provides pilgrim accommodation and meals and is a starting point for conquering the surrounding peaks.

The Túnel de San Adrián is a natural cave through which the road has passed for millennia between Gipuzkoa and Álava provinces. Inside the cave, there is also a small chapel, and hikers still use this route today to cross the mountain range. On the park’s territory, other caves can be visited, including the 14-kilometer corridor system of Arrikrutz Cave.

On the plateau pastures, sheep graze, and traditional shepherd huts, „txabolas” are still in use. Griffon vultures have also settled in the park, and with luck, giant birds circling above the rock faces can be observed.

Gorbeia Natural Park

Located on the border of Vizcaya and Álava provinces, its central peak, Gorbeia, is 1,482 meters high. The park is the locals’ favorite weekend excursion destination. The large steel cross standing on the peak, known as the Trinity Cross, is visible from afar and is the park’s symbol.

The area has numerous hiking trails, from family-friendly walks to more serious mountain hikes. The Gujuli Waterfall, which plunges from 100 meters high, is one of the park’s most popular destinations – especially in spring when snowmelt makes the stream more abundant. Walking among the shady paths of ancient beech forests, we feel the atmosphere of Central European forests, while clearings offer wonderful panoramas of the valleys.

The park’s cultural values include ancient stone huts of shepherds, some of which now function as shelters. The center presenting traditional lifestyles is located in Sarria. Local villages like Orozko or Zeberio serve as starting points for hikes and welcome visitors with traditional Basque inns. In the park, we may encounter wild boars, foxes, and if we’re lucky, deer in the early morning hours.

The Sagrada Família, or the Holy Family Church, is Barcelona’s most famous and iconic building. Gaudí’s greatest work is still not complete, but it’s wonderful both inside and out!

One of the most beautiful churches in the world, not just in Spain, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Located in downtown Barcelona, 2.5 km from the main square Placa de Catalunya. It has stops for both metro lines L2 and L5.

History of Sagrada Família

The idea for the church came from a wealthy Barcelona bookseller, José María y Bocabella, who wanted a basilica where both rich and poor could pray. The first stone was laid in 1882.

In 1883, Gaudí was given the task of building the church. He devoted the rest of his life mainly to this work, considering the church his life’s masterpiece. With Gaudí’s involvement, the construction of the originally neo-Gothic planned church took a completely different direction. Gaudí changed the entire building to his own style, except for the existing Crypt. He put tremendous energy into this project during the remaining 43 years of his life, especially in the last 15 years when he focused solely on this.

On November 6, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI elevated the church to the rank of basilica and consecrated it.

Due to the complexity of the plans, construction has proceeded and continues to proceed very slowly, with work still ongoing. When completed, it will be the world’s largest basilica.

Description of Sagrada Família

Several architectural styles can be found. The pre-Gaudí architects planned a neo-Catalan building, which is a type of neo-Gothic style. Gaudí himself continued development in the spirit of modernism. The Passion Facade, in particular, shows modernist features.

Its floor plan is cross-shaped. It has five naves, with the main nave pointing south and measuring 90 meters from the apse to the northern end, with a width of 45 meters. A colonnade surrounds almost the entire church. It contains a chapel dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

Inside, there are many complex patterns, such as spiral towers reminiscent of sandcastles, topped with geometric shapes inspired by cubism.

Studying nature, Gaudí saw that many natural forms are approximately ruled surfaces. In the church, we can observe combinations of these, especially in the interior space and attic.

Towers

Gaudí designed the church with 18 towers, of which 12 are dedicated to the apostles, 4 to the evangelists, and the remaining two towers represent the veneration of Jesus and the Virgin Mary.

The basilica’s main tower is the Jesus Tower, which according to plans will rise above all others. It will be raised above the crossing and, at 170 meters tall, will be higher than the current tallest church spire, the tower of Ulm Cathedral. This height was chosen to be visible from afar.

Facades

The Nativity Facade opens to the east and is part of the World Heritage site. It depicts Jesus’s birth in rich detail and evokes classical Catalan architecture.

The Passion Facade is located on the western side. It’s a less ornate facade characterized by simplicity, clarity, transparency, and large shapes.

The Glory Facade was planned for the southern side but hasn’t been started yet. According to plans, it will have 21 columns and two chapels.

Interior

The interior height is very substantial: the side naves are 30 meters high, while the main and transept naves are 45 meters. The vault is supported by stone columns representing trees, which branch out at the top and merge into the ceiling.

The apse (semicircular section with the altar) contains seven chapels, which were made for joy and mourning. Here, the windows are decorated with natural motifs.

Crypt

Located under the apse, it’s in neo-Gothic style. Its floor plan is nearly circular, with an approximate area of 120 square meters, with seven chapels in a semicircle on its side. Opposite are three main chapels, each flanked by an additional chapel on both sides.

Mass is celebrated in the central chapel. To the right is the chapel of Our Lady of Montserrat, the patron saint of Catalonia, and the Jesus Chapel with Josep Maria Bocabella i Verdaguers’ tomb. On the other side are the chapel of sacraments and the chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, where Antoni Gaudí rests.

The transportation in Madrid is excellent, similar to Barcelona. You can easily reach important places, almost exclusively by using the metro. Here you’ll find everything about public transportation!

Airport and city center transportation

The Barajas Airport (Aeropuerto de Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez) is located in the northeastern part of Madrid, from where it’s easy to get into the city center.

It has four terminals, but terminals 1, 2, and 3 can be accessed from one location. So essentially, there are two main areas to exit the airport.

Metro

Line 8 stops at both main areas (T1-T2-T3 and T4 terminals). In the city center, the final stop is Nuevos Ministerios station, where you can transfer to other metro lines (6 and 10).

Public transportation tickets and passes are valid (the airport belongs to „A” zone), but an additional ticket, Billete Suplemento Aeropuerto, is required (3 €). The tourist ticket (Abono Transporte Turístico) is an exception, with which you can travel without an additional ticket.

The ticket price is 4.50-5 € depending on the number of stations (this includes the supplementary ticket). The ticket machine will ask for the destination and calculate the price.

You can find metro prices here!

Buses

Several buses can take you to the city center, connecting to transfer points.

Bus 203 (Exprés Aeropuerto)

Runs from T1, T2, and T4 terminals to Atocha Station.

Travel time is only 30-35 minutes, and it operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Tickets can be purchased on the bus and public transportation passes are not valid.

Ticket price is 5 €.

Bus 101

Runs from T1, T2, T3 terminals to Canillejas stop, where you can transfer to Line 5 metro.

Tickets can be purchased on the bus, public transportation passes are valid (except metro tickets).

Ticket price is 1.50 €.

Bus 200

Runs from all four terminals to Avenida de América stop, where you can transfer to metro lines 4, 6, 7, and 9.

Tickets can be purchased on the bus, public transportation passes are valid (except metro tickets).

Ticket price is 1.50 €.

You can find all information about these buses here!

Public transportation in Madrid city

Madrid’s transportation is eerily similar to Barcelona’s. The numerous metro lines cover the city, allowing you to reach almost every important location.

Madrid’s transportation system is divided into urban („A” zone) and suburban areas. What interests us, tourists, is that the main attractions are located in the „A” zone.

Public transportation is free for children under 4 years old!

Multi Card

Transportation can only be used with a Multi Card. This is a magnetic card that can be purchased from an automatic machine and must be loaded with tickets or passes. There’s a one-time issuance fee of 2.5 €.

To validate, the magnetic card must be touched to the sensor at the metro entrance and on the bus.

Bus ticket (Billete EMT)

This exists only for buses and can be purchased from the bus driver.

Ticket price is 1.50 €.

Metro ticket (Billete Metro)

As the name suggests, it can only be used on the metro. Valid only for one trip on the day of purchase.

The metro ticket price depends on the number of stations! The ticket machine will ask for the destination and calculate the price. This is valid within Madrid’s boundaries („A” zone), outside of which a uniform price ticket is required (Billete Combinado).

Ticket price is between 1.50-2 € depending on the number of stations.

Collective ticket (Metrobús 10 trips)

This means 10 tickets valid for both bus and metro. For the metro, the number of stations within the „A” zone doesn’t matter. Can be used by multiple people.

The collective ticket price is 12.20 € (station number is irrelevant).

Day passes / Tourist ticket (Abono Transporte Turístico)

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7-day passes can be purchased, providing unlimited travel in the purchased zone. If you only want to see attractions within the city, the „A” zone tourist ticket is sufficient.

Each pass is valid for calendar days, meaning it’s valid until midnight on the last day of the period!

With this pass, no additional ticket is needed for the airport metro!

Passes for children under 11 years old are half-price!

Prices:

1 day: 8.40 €

2 days: 14.20 €

3 days: 18.40 €

4 days: 22.60 €

5 days: 26.80 €

7 days: 35.40 €

Madrid transportation in maps

You can find maps of the public transportation network and lines on this website, which are downloadable!

Bilbao, as the center of the Basque Country, is one of Spain’s most unique locations. The dialect, culture, and almost everything else makes it an exciting city.

The city is considered by the Basques as their national capital. The city was founded in 1300 by Don Diego López de Haro, Count of Vizcaya. Its strong industrialisation in the 19th and 20th centuries made it the second most industrialised region in Spain, after Barcelona.

Bilbao attractions

Old Town (Casco Viejo)

The historical center of the city is located on the right bank of the Nerbioi River. This is the most authentic and charming part of the city.

Its most famous part is the renowned Siete Calles (Seven Streets), which form the original medieval core of the city. These narrow, cobblestone streets are full of small shops, local bars, and restaurants where you can taste Basque pintxos.

Cosy streets and squares

Santiago Cathedral

The most important religious building in Bilbao is located in the old town.

Construction began at the end of the 14th century and was completed in the 15th century. It originally served as a pilgrim church and was built in honor of Saint James the Apostle (Santiago in Spanish), who is the namesake of the famous Spanish pilgrimage route.

Its architectural style is mainly Gothic, but it also contains Neo-Gothic and Renaissance elements, which are the results of transformations over the centuries. The cathedral includes several smaller chapels, each dedicated to different patron saints.

San Antón Church and Bridge

They are considered historical symbols of Bilbao, as both appear on the city’s coat of arms.

It was named after Saint Anthony the Abbot, who is the patron saint of healing and the poor. The church’s façade and tower are striking examples of Gothic style. Its interior is impressive, with high arches and a richly decorated altar. Besides the main altar, there are several smaller chapels, each dedicated to different patron saints.

The San Antón Bridge spans the Nerbioi River next to the church. It was built in the 14th century and was one of the city’s first stone bridges. It was originally made of wood and later converted to stone.

Zubizuri Bridge

One of Bilbao’s most iconic modern architectural creations is a tourist attraction.

The futuristic pedestrian bridge has a unique, curved structure. Its walking surface is made of glass and receives beautiful illumination at night.

Futuristic bridge

La Ribera Market

One of Europe’s largest covered markets is located in the old town.

An open-air market existed here already in medieval times, which was transformed into an impressive art deco style covered building in 1929. At one time, the Guinness Book of Records recognized it as Europe’s largest covered market (with its area of 10,000 m²).

Naturally, many Basque products are available. One of the market’s most popular sections is where you can taste the famous Basque pintxos (the local version of tapas), fresh seafood, meats, and wines.

Doña Casilda Iturrizar Park

One of Bilbao’s most beautiful and largest green spaces is a favorite relaxation spot for locals.

The park was named after Doña Casilda Iturrizar, a Bilbao philanthropist who left her fortune for community purposes and played a major role in the park’s creation.

One of its most beautiful features is the small artificial lake. Nearby is an aviary that was once home to rare bird species. The park is full of impressive fountains, as well as numerous sculptures and monuments. One of the most famous fountains is the Fuente del Perro.

Mount Artxanda

One of Bilbao’s best viewpoints, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the surrounding green hills.

Getting to the mountain itself is a great experience. The Funicular de Artxanda quickly takes you up and rewards you with wonderful views. At the summit, there are parks, walking paths, sports fields, and rest areas.

At the top of the mountain, there is a huge metal screw-shaped monument (La Huella) that commemorates the victims of the Spanish Civil War.

Great views of the town and surrounding area

Basque Museum (Museo Vasco)

Located in the old town, the museum focuses on Basque history, traditions, and ethnography.

The building itself is historically significant: it is housed in a 17th-century Renaissance monastery, the former Jesuit monastery. The museum was founded in 1921.

Its main theme is the history and origin of the Basque people: archaeological findings and historical documents help understand the roots of Basque culture. The exhibitions showcase the Basques’ famous maritime past, whaling, and sea trade.

The museum’s famous symbol is the Mikeldi idol. This is a mysterious prehistoric stone sculpture depicting a bull or wild boar. It is one of the most well-known Basque archaeological finds. Another significant attraction is the huge relief map of the Basque Country, which details the region’s geography.

All information can be found here!

Guggenheim Museum

The museum is one of the most famous cultural attractions not only in the Basque Country but in all of Spain.

It is famous for its unique, futuristic architecture and modern art exhibitions. The museum’s undulating, curved forms stand on the banks of the Nervión River and create an effect as if the building itself were moving. The titanium cladding reflects varying shades depending on the lighting conditions.

It showcases modern and contemporary artworks by world-famous artists such as Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Yayoi Kusama, Anselm Kiefer, Richard Serra. The latter’s work, „The Matter of Time” is one of the most famous artworks in the museum, a monumental spatial installation consisting of huge steel spirals.

At the museum’s entrance stands a massive 12-meter-high flower sculpture in the shape of a dog. The creation called Puppy changes seasonally as it is covered with living flowers. The 9-meter-high bronze spider next to the building is one of the most iconic contemporary artworks, symbolizing motherhood and creation.

I stayed in Malaga from Saturday to Tuesday, but took a day trip to Granada. This is where the famous Alhambra fortress complex is located, which is one of Spain’s most important historical monuments.

The cheapest solution is to travel with the Alsa bus company. There are several direct services running daily in both directions, and tickets can be booked online at a reasonable price (return ticket was 26 euros). The journey takes 1 hour and 45 minutes.

In Granada, bus number 33 goes from the bus station through the city center, which is worth taking. You need to buy tickets from the driver, and card payment is accepted.

The Puerta de Elvira was the first sight, which is a medieval gate. From here, a good uphill climb leads to the city’s iconic quarter, the Albayzin. The white houses and narrow streets create a wonderful atmosphere; it was a great experience to walk around. Plus, there’s a viewpoint offering a great view of the Alhambra.

From here, I walked up to the fortress (there’s also a good walking path up from the northern side). Make sure to buy your ticket online. I bought the full-price ticket, which gives access to the Alhambra fortress, the Nasrid Palace, and the Generalife gardens. You need to select a specific time slot, which is for entering the palace. You can only enter at this time, while the other two areas can be visited anytime during the day.

I arrived around 11:45 and went to the Generalife gardens first. It’s a very beautiful, well-maintained park with lots of plants and orange trees. And there’s a great view of the fortress and the Albayzin quarter.

I had a 1 PM time slot for the Nasrid Palace. The entry process is quick and precise; there’s no point queuing up much earlier. The palace interior is incredibly beautiful. It’s clear that the rulers who lived here really valued grandeur. Beautifully carved, painted halls, and wonderful open spaces. It’s very similar to the Alcazar in Seville. There are similarly beautiful sections there too.

It took about 45 minutes to walk through, and then I went to the fortress section. Here, the panorama from the towers is the main attraction. From the first tower, you can see Albayzin. The second one is higher up, offering views of Granada’s city center and northern part. The 3rd is the highest and provides the most beautiful view. It’s almost a 360-degree panorama with an excellent view of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. This is Spain’s highest mountain, which was snow-capped. It was strange being in just a t-shirt and sweater while seeing snowy peaks not far away.

I spent more than 3 hours at the Alhambra, and I feel I fully enjoyed the whole complex. I walked down to the city center and had lunch at a riverside bistro.

The old town itself isn’t too exciting. Its central part features the huge cathedral, but besides that, the streets are average. I didn’t spend too much time here, so I walked to the bus station. On the way, I passed by the city’s bullfighting arena, but couldn’t go inside.

Overall, Granada is very beautiful, especially because of the Alhambra and the Albayzin quarter. These give the city its true character. Don’t skip these two parts if you’re visiting Malaga!

I already had a ticket to Malaga in January 2024, but unfortunately, the trip was canceled due to a death. So when I saw a round-trip ticket for 58 € in early December, there was no question about booking it.

Departure Saturday morning, return Tuesday noon, so I had nearly 3 days available. Saturday and Sunday were spent in Malaga, Monday in Granada, about which I wrote separately.

Saturday

The plane landed around 11, and the easiest way to get to the city center from the airport is by train (line C-1). It takes 11 minutes to reach the Central-Alameda terminal, which is practically downtown. The easiest payment method is contactless card payment. You need to tap your bank card at the sensor on the entry gate, then do the same at the exit gate at the terminal. The railway company deducts the amount later.

First, I dropped off my backpack and coat at a luggage storage. It only costs €2.5 per day, which is nothing. You can book it online.

I walked around downtown, it was a pleasant 19 degrees, perfect for enjoying the sunshine. The center of the old town is the cathedral, which is truly magnificent from the outside. I also checked out the Mercado Central de Atarazanas market, where you can buy all kinds of food: befitting a coastal city, there’s lots of seafood available. It’s worth wandering aimlessly through the small streets, there are many cafes and restaurants here.

At 14:00, I checked into my accommodation, then went back downtown. First, I walked up to the Gibralfaro castle that dominates Malaga’s skyline. It’s not an easy walk, the well-maintained road keeps climbing. However, the view gets more beautiful as you go up, so it’s worth walking (you can also take a bus up). The entrance fee is €3.5, which can be purchased on-site or online. (There’s a €5.5 combined ticket that includes entry to the Alcazaba.) You can walk all around the castle walls. The views are spectacular in every direction, definitely walk the full circuit!

I went down the same walking path and walked to the La Malagueta beach area. The beach seemed a bit characterless to me, though a beach doesn’t really show its true face in January. However, I managed to photograph a group of parrots up close. 🙂

The city’s main museum, the Museo de Málaga, is in a large building. There are two main themes: an art section and an archaeological section. You can see many wonderful paintings, it’s definitely worth visiting. Especially since entry is free for EU citizens!

Sunday

Since this day promised brilliant sunshine and 22 degrees, I visited the famous beaches south of Malaga: Benalmádena and Torremolinos.

But first, I went to Colomares Castle on the hillside. Although it’s not a large building, it’s beautifully executed. It’s worth traveling up here, and the view of the coastal area is also very beautiful.

From there, I took a bus to the beach, where I walked along the seafront promenade and enjoyed the sunny weather. I started from the central part of Benalmádena, at the bay called Puerta Marina. You can see many yachts, and there are numerous bars and restaurants along the promenade.

I walked towards Torremolinos, with several free toilets along the promenade. Many people were sunbathing on the beach, and some were even swimming. From a few movements, you could tell the sea wasn’t warm. 🙂

I sunbathed for half an hour while having coffee, then walked to the train station and traveled back to Malaga. Since some attractions are free on Sundays, I took advantage of this opportunity.

First, I went to the Alcazaba, which stands above downtown. This is the fortress below Gibralfaro, which also offers beautiful views of downtown. You don’t have to walk up as much here, you can reach the highest level with an easy 7-8 minute walk. This also includes the Roman amphitheater below, though you can see it perfectly from outside.

View from the Alcazaba

I picked out two museums that are free on Sundays. The Centre Pompidou on the seafront promenade is a modern art museum. The museum area is underground, with a large colored cube marking it on the surface. Well, what can I say, it’s quite an abstract exhibition, or maybe I just can’t appreciate this kind of art enough. I’ll stick to older paintings. 🙂

The other is Carmen Thyssen in one of the old town streets. Here we can mainly see paintings by Spanish artists. There was a Sorolla exhibition at the time, I spent a while admiring the works. If you love art, it’s definitely worth visiting.

Lanzarote is perhaps the least visited island of the Canary Islands. Yet numerous attractions, beaches, and resorts await tourists!

Lanzarote is the easternmost, northernmost, and also the oldest of the seven major islands in the Spanish Canary Islands. Locals often call it Conejera, while others refer to it as the „Island of a Hundred Volcanoes”. Its central landscapes are made diverse by nearly 300 volcanoes.

Lanzarote attractions

Arrecife

Lanzarote’s capital and largest city is located on the eastern coast of the island.

Founded in the 15th century, its significance grew in the 18th century when it became the island’s administrative center. It got its name from the coastal coral reefs („arrecife” means reef in Spanish) that have protected the city for centuries.

Its most important attraction is the San Gabriel Castle (Castillo de San Gabriel). The fortress is located on a small island and was built in the 16th century to defend against pirate attacks. Today, the castle houses the Historical Museum (Museo de Historia de Arrecife), which showcases the island’s past.

Timanfaya National Park

One of Lanzarote’s most iconic natural attractions, covering approximately 51 square kilometers in the western part of the island.

The park features the Montañas del Fuego (Fire Mountains), which offer a spectacular sight with their red, black, and orange hues. The landscape looks like something from another planet.

Near the earth’s surface, temperatures are still extremely high, reaching 400-600°C in some places. An interesting attraction related to this is the El Diablo restaurant, where food is cooked using volcanic heat. Just a few meters below the grill is glowing rock that functions as a natural oven.

To preserve and protect the landscape, the national park can only be visited through organized tours.

Fundación César Manrique

One of Lanzarote’s most important cultural attractions, commemorating the legacy of the island’s most famous native, César Manrique.

Located in the artist’s former home in the town of Tahíche, the house is unique because it was built on volcanic lava bubbles, perfectly integrating with the island’s volcanic landscape.

The museum displays Manrique’s paintings, sculptures, and other artworks. The exhibitions encompass various modern art movements. Below the building are five huge lava bubbles that Manrique transformed into creative spaces. These unique rooms – including a pool, rest areas, and garden terraces – create a futuristic atmosphere.

All information can be found here!

Jameos del Agua

Located in the northern part of the island, this is one of César Manrique’s famous architectural and artistic works.

It’s part of a 6-kilometer-long volcanic tunnel system created by the eruption of the La Corona volcano approximately 4,000 years ago. The term „jameo” in Spanish refers to the open areas created by the collapse of the cave ceiling.

Inside the cave is a crystal-clear saltwater lake fed by seawater. The lake’s special feature is the albino cave crabs (Munidopsis polymorpha) that live here. These tiny, white creatures are found exclusively in this location.

All information can be found here!

Cueva de los Verdes

Part of a several-kilometer-long volcanic tunnel system created by the La Corona volcano’s eruption approximately 4,000 years ago.

The cave was formed when the outer layer of hot lava flowing from the volcano solidified while the inner, still liquid lava continued to flow, leaving behind a cavity. Over time, this tunnel has developed fascinating geological formations and colors.

One of its most unique features is an underground lake that creates an optical illusion. The water surface perfectly reflects the surroundings, creating an interesting atmosphere that often deceives visitors.

Like a lake

Charco de los Clicos

The Green Lagoon, this special lake is located in the southwestern part of the island, near the village of El Golfo.

It’s the remnant of an old volcanic crater that partially connects to the Atlantic Ocean. Ocean waves and volcanic activity together created this unique natural formation. The lake’s vivid green color is due to microscopic algae that thrive in high-salt environments.

Visitors cannot go down to the lakeshore. From the nearby parking lot, a designated path leads to a point offering beautiful views.

Mirador del Río

This viewpoint in the northern part of the island offers magnificent panoramic views of La Graciosa island and the Atlantic Ocean.

The lookout, situated on a 400-meter-high cliff, was designed by César Manrique. Its interior spaces are dominated by Manrique’s style: a meeting of natural forms and minimalist design.

You can drive all the way to the top from Ye village, making it a popular tourist attraction in Lanzarote.

Puerto del Carmen

One of Lanzarote’s most popular tourist centers.

The town has evolved from a traditional fishing village into a modern resort while maintaining its authentic atmosphere. Along La Avenida de las Playas, there are numerous bars, clubs, and restaurants.

Puerto del Carmen’s most famous beach is Playa Grande. It features fine golden sand, crystal-clear water, and excellent infrastructure, perfect for families and those seeking relaxation.

Playa Blanca and Castillo del Aguila

These two towns are the center of the island’s southernmost part, where most tourists arrive.

There are numerous accommodations, restaurants, and a castle here. Several smaller beaches are nearby, and you can take a boat to the opposite Fuerteventura.

Salinas de Janubio

This place preserves salt-making traditions on the island’s southwestern coast, near Yaiza.

Founded in the late 1890s, it has been operating continuously since then. Ocean water is collected in various pools where it slowly evaporates, leaving salt deposits at the bottom. The different pools are painted in various colors. The salt is then collected, cleaned, and sold in various forms, including the famous Fleur de Sel (salt flower).

There’s also a visitor center at the salt pans. Visitors can walk around the pools, observe the salt-making process, and watch local bird life.

La Geria

In this small area, we can see Lanzarote’s traditional wine cultivation.

The wine region’s uniqueness comes from growing grapes in volcanic soil. The area is covered with black volcanic ash, which provides ideal nutrients for the vines. Since rain is rare, the grape-growing techniques used here are unique: small walls and depressions surrounding the vines help preserve rainfall and provide protection against wind.

The most common grape varieties include Malvasia and Listán Negro. You can taste the produced wine in the local cellars.

Located on the outskirts of Gautiza village, this garden showcases numerous cacti.

The park was created in an old quarry, preserving the unique character of the volcanic landscape while implementing modern gardening solutions. The park was designed by famous Canarian architect César Manrique and opened in 1991.

The park features over 1,000 different cactus species from various parts of the world, including Mexico, South America, and Africa. Visitors can see cacti of different shapes and sizes. The garden is arranged on multiple levels, with different sections following various themes.

Castillo de Santa Bárbara

One of Lanzarote’s oldest and most significant fortifications, located at the top of the volcanic Guanapay mountain near the town of Teguise.

Construction began in the 16th century when Lanzarote became a frequent target of pirate attacks. The first parts of the fortress were built by Sancho de Herrera, then ruler of Lanzarote, to provide protection for the island’s inhabitants. Later, in the late 16th century, Italian engineer Leonardo Torriani designed and expanded it. He added the bastions and walls still visible today, which strengthened the castle’s defensive capabilities.

Today it functions as a museum, showcasing Lanzarote’s history, particularly focusing on pirate attacks on the island and its defense strategies. From the top of the fortress, there’s a magnificent panorama of Teguise town, the island’s volcanic landscapes, and the Atlantic Ocean.
