First, let’s clarify the spelling: Brugge is the local form, while Bruges is the English version. I’ll stick with the Belgian form.

The city is frequently referred to as „the Venice of the North” because of its numerous canals. Remnants of old fortifications and mills surrounding the old town are located along these canals. Its name likely originates from the Germanic word „Bryggia”, meaning a mooring place or bridge.

Its popularity was further boosted by the film „In Bruges” which featured several famous quotes. This is also where the fairy-tale expression, „are the swans still there?” comes from.

Main Square (Grote Markt)

The main square of Bruges is surrounded by stunning buildings, with a statue of Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck at its center.

Its most notable buildings include the Belfry (which I will introduce below) and the Provinciaal Hof. The latter, now the seat of the West Flanders provincial government, was originally built as a post office in the 19th century.

Belfry and Halle

The medieval belfry is one of the most prominent symbols of Bruges’ main square. It has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.

The belfry was built around 1240 on the market square when Bruges was an important center for the Flemish cloth industry. After a devastating fire in 1280, the tower was largely rebuilt.

The 83-meter-tall structure is accessible by a narrow, steep staircase of 366 steps, offering an excellent view at the top.

The base of the tower is the former market hall, Halle, a rectangular building with an inner courtyard. Accordingly, the belfry is also known as Halletoren (hall tower).

Church of Our Lady (Onze Lieve Vrouw)

Its 116-meter-tall tower is the city’s tallest structure and the world’s third-highest brick tower. Construction began around 1230, with its current form taking shape in the 15th century.

The church houses many art treasures, the most famous being Michelangelo’s „Madonna and Child.” Additionally, the tombs of Charles the Bold, the last Valois Duke of Burgundy, and his daughter, Princess Mary, are located here.

Basilica of the Holy Blood (Basiliek van het Heilig Bloed)

An ancient Catholic church in Bruges, it was granted the status of a minor basilica (basilica minor) in 1923. Tightly integrated with surrounding buildings, including the Bruges City Hall, its ornate entrance may not immediately suggest a church at first glance.

Flanders’ first Count, Baldwin Iron Arm, built a fortress in 862 as a defense against Norman invasions. In its southwestern corner, the Chapel of St. Basil, more commonly known as the Holy Blood Church, was constructed in the 12th century.

It became famous for the Holy Blood relic. This relic is actually a phial, originally made for perfume, containing a piece of cloth believed to be soaked with the blood of Christ.

City Hall (Stadhuis Brugge)

One of Belgium’s oldest buildings, it’s located near the Basilica of the Holy Blood.

Its construction began in 1376 and was completed in 1421. Built in the Late Gothic style, this grand and opulent building is a testament to Bruges’ 14th-century prosperity. The façade features statues of biblical and historical figures, including counts and countesses of Flanders.

The interior is equally stunning, particularly the Gothic Hall on the first floor, where wall paintings depict significant historical events of the city.

Saint Salvator’s Cathedral (Sint-Salvatorskathedraal)

The cathedral of Bruges, dedicated to the Holy Savior and Saint Donatian of Reims.

As the city’s main church, it is one of the few buildings in Bruges that has survived the centuries unscathed. Originally not designed as a cathedral, it was granted this status in 1834.

The interior, measuring 101 meters in length, contains notable furnishings and houses many works of art.

Steenstraat

This street, leading from the main square, takes you to Saint Salvator’s Cathedral.

Not only considered the main street, but it’s also regarded as the most beautiful street in the city. Typical Bruges-style houses along this street host a variety of shops, restaurants, and cafes.

Bonifacius Bridge

Located near the Church of Our Lady, this is Bruges’ most famous bridge.

Despite being built in the 20th century, this narrow stone bridge attracts many tourists and offers the best view of the church.

Saint John’s Hospital (Sint-Jansspitaal)

Situated along the river, this former hospital is Bruges’ oldest building, founded in the 12th century.

Exhibitions of documents and surgical instruments in the former wards depict the hospital’s history. The old pharmacy next to the wards is also preserved.

Dijver Canal

A must-do in Bruges is a boat trip along the city’s canals, with the most picturesque part being the houses along the Dijver section.

The 15th-16th century buildings beautifully line the waterfront, offering a glimpse back into medieval times.

Beguinage (Beginjhof)

This complex of white houses has served as a residence for nuns and religious women since the 13th century.

Worth visiting for its beautiful park with flowers and an exhibition about life in the 17th century. The small church is dedicated to Saint Elizabeth.

Sint-Janshuismolen

Located along the eastern canal of the city, there are four windmills that played an important economic role until the 19th century.

Among them, Sint-Janshuismolen in Kruisvest Park is the most famous. It’s the only one still in its original location, continues to grind flour, and is open to visitors.

Groeninge Museum

Built on the site of the medieval Eekhout Abbey, this museum displays several centuries of Flemish and Belgian painting.

The museum’s highlights include the collection of early Flemish paintings, such as works by Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, and Gerard David. These reflect the rich artistic heritage of 15th and 16th-century Bruges.

In addition, we can see works by a wide range of Renaissance and Baroque masters, as well as paintings from the 18th and 19th-century neoclassical and realist periods.

Memling Museum

Located in the old chapel of Saint John’s Hospital, it is one of Bruges’ smallest but very atmospheric museums.

Six paintings by Hans Memling, a 15th-century painter, are on display. His most beautiful work is the Saint Ursula Shrine, where the artist „narrates” the main events of Ursula’s life.

Gruuthusemuseum

Showcasing Bruges’ centuries-old history in the Gruuthuse ducal palace along the Dijver canal.

The palace was built in the 15th century and was once owned by the wealthy and influential Van der Aa family. You can see the ornate reception rooms, bedrooms, and chapel.

The exhibition includes furniture, bobbin lace, gold and silver objects, weapons, musical instruments, and ceramics. The most famous object in the collection is the painted terracotta bust of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, from 1520. Another outstanding value is the collection of 16th and 17th-century Flemish tapestries.

Arentshuis

Located next to the Groeningemuseum, in the former Arents house, it showcases an impressive collection of works by British artist Frank Brangwyn.

The house itself is wonderful: built in the 18th century, it has preserved part of its original interiors, giving visitors insight into the lifestyle of the era.

The Arentshuis displays numerous paintings, drawings, and engravings, as well as a furniture collection and other artifacts related to Brangwyn’s work and era.

A small museum that presents the history of chocolate through exhibitions.

The museum showcases the journey of chocolate from ancient Mayan and Aztec cultures to the modern European confectionery industry. We can learn how cocoa was used in religious rituals and as currency, and how chocolate became a popular drink and dessert in Europe.

They also offer chocolate tastings, demonstrate praline making, and of course, you can buy from the many types of chocolates.

This small Belgian city is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited! It’s no coincidence that a famous film describes it as a fairy tale.

Often referred to as the Venice of the North, Bruges is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and canal system. One of the best ways to explore the city is by boat, allowing you to see numerous historical buildings and charming bridges.

The historic center, with its impressive medieval buildings and the famous Belfry tower, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and offers many wonders.

The jewel of South Africa, Cape Town is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations, nestled at the foot of a mountain along the coastline.

Queenstown

Located on New Zealand’s South Island, Queenstown is known as the adventure capital of the country. Situated beautifully on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by the Remarkables mountain range, it is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

The city is famous for its thrilling jet boat rides on the Shotover River, racing through canyons. In the winter months, it becomes a hub for skiing and snowboarding.

In addition to active adventures, it’s an excellent place for relaxation. The nearby wine regions, such as Gibbston Valley, are famous for their Pinot Noir wines.

Florence

The heart of Tuscany is known as the cradle of the Renaissance, and its architectural and artistic heritage make it one of the most beautiful cities.

Its symbol is the cathedral, renowned for its massive dome, intricate marble decorations, and impressive interiors, which are integral to Florence’s cityscape. We can admire this from Michelangelo Square, the best viewpoint.

Among its museums, the Uffizi Gallery stands out, showcasing works by Botticelli and Michelangelo. Additionally, the Palazzo Pitti should not be missed, as the palace and gardens reflect the power and taste of the Medici family.

The most charming city on the west coast of the USA, though I believe many would rank it first.

The Golden Gate Bridge is naturally its most famous landmark, offering stunning views of the city, the surrounding bay, and Alcatraz Island, which once housed America’s most notorious prison and now operates as a museum.

In this hilly city, be sure to try the iconic cable car, which connects downtown to the waterfront area, Fisherman’s Wharf. For a truly enjoyable ride, stand on the steps and hold onto the rail!

A must-see photo spot is Lombard Street, one of the world’s steepest and most winding streets, beautifully lined with landscaped gardens.

The capital of the Czech Republic boasts one of Europe’s most beautiful old town areas, filled with Gothic architecture.

Everyone knows the Charles Bridge, Prague’s iconic structure. The bridge is always bustling with local artists, musicians, and street vendors, making the walk a memorable experience.

Overlooking the city is the world’s largest castle complex, which includes St. Vitus Cathedral and the Presidential Palace. The view of the city from here is breathtaking.

I visited in June 2022 and can confirm: it truly is a charming city where you can walk for hours, enjoying the sights and atmosphere.

Brussels

Long overlooked by many as just the „capital of the EU”, Brussels is definitely worth a visit.

While the European Parliament and the Atomium are well-known, Brussels is also home to numerous museums and beautiful buildings.

I enjoyed my time in Brussels; it’s a very charming and beautiful capital city.

Dinant

Located in a valley between Namur and the French border, this picturesque town is a must-see.

Dinant’s attractions include the Collegiate Church of Notre Dame de Dinant and the Citadel above it. The fortress, built in the 11th century, was constructed to control the Meuse Valley. It gained its current form in the 19th century. You can reach the top by 408 steps from the church or by a cable car.

Ghent

Many say that visiting Ghent is a must, in addition to Bruges. Like Bruges, Ghent is also crisscrossed by several canals.

In the Middle Ages, it was one of the largest and wealthiest cities in Northern Europe. Often referred to as the „Florence of the North” for its variety of themed museums, the most famous of which is the Museum voor Schone Kunsten (Museum of Fine Arts) featuring works by Hieronymus Bosch, Jean Fouquet, and other Flemish masters.

The city center is car-free, allowing you to explore the attractions on foot or by bike: St. Bavo’s Cathedral, the Belfry, Gravensteen Castle, and the beautifully designed old Graslei harbor.

Antwerp

The capital of Flanders, Antwerp is an important city in the Benelux region both economically and culturally.

The city is put on the world map by diamonds. Nearly 90% of the world’s diamond trade takes place in Antwerp. But the city boasted great prosperity even in the Middle Ages, which is reflected in its buildings.

Among its rich monuments, the Cathedral of Our Lady stands out as the tallest cathedral in the Low Countries. Another famous building is Het Steen fortress on the banks of the Schelde River, the oldest building in Antwerp.

A key figure in its art history is Rubens. The painter worked here, and a large part of his house, now a museum, was designed by him. This makes it a must-see in Antwerp!

Liège

Situated in the Meuse Valley, Liège is one of the largest industrial and cultural centers of Wallonia.

The mix of various minorities (French, German, Italian) living here has created a unique lifestyle. This is evident in speech: the residents speak a distinctive dialect of Walloon.

Liège is known for its festivals and various events. The most famous is the „Le Quinze Août” celebration held in August, showcasing local traditions.

The city has a vibrant nightlife: the Le Carré district is full of pubs, bars, cafes, and other entertainment venues.

Leuven

Located about 25 km from Brussels, Leuven is perfect for a day trip for those who love charming small towns.

Its most beautiful attraction is the old town hall, located in Grote Markt square. The building, with a Gothic, lace-like facade, features more than 200 statues!

Leuven also has a Hungarian connection: after World War I, the „Old Hungarian Lamentations of Mary” manuscript was brought here. This codex is our first known poetic relic. Additionally, the Collegium Hungaricum has been operating here since 1948.

If you love beer, you might have come across the name Leuven. It’s home to the world’s largest brewing company, where Stella Artois is produced.

Namur

This city was an important military location for a long time, which contributes to its significance in Belgium today. The Parliament of Wallonia is located here.

Its most famous attraction and landmark is the Citadel above the city. This is the country’s largest fortress of its kind. The view is magnificent over the city and the Meuse and Sambre rivers.

Moreover, walking through the charming streets of the old town is worthwhile. The Saint Aubin’s Cathedral, museums, and beautiful houses are must-see attractions.

Baarle-Nassau

This town has been listed among the most beautiful places in the Netherlands. But how can a town be in two countries!?

Well, part of the town belongs to Belgium and another part to the Netherlands. Moreover, there are small Dutch areas within the Belgian territories. The complicated border is the result of medieval treaties, agreements, land swaps, and sales.

The town is not bothered by this situation, especially because of the tourists. There are even houses where the border runs „through”, subjecting the residents to the laws of both countries.

Ypres

Located in the southwestern part of Belgium, near the French border, this city was an important battlefield during World War I.

The Menin Gate memorial commemorates the Commonwealth soldiers who died for the city and in the surrounding battles during the First World War and whose graves are unknown.

In the city center, the 13th-century Cloth Hall is the most imposing. It was one of the largest commercial buildings of the Middle Ages and is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

Ooidonk Castle (Kasteel Ooidonk)

One of Belgium’s most beautiful castles, inhabited by the t’Kint de Roodenbeke family.

A fortress originally stood on the current castle’s site but was later demolished. It was rebuilt in the Renaissance style by an Antwerp merchant. The t’Kint de Roodenbeke family acquired it in 1864.

The castle and park are open to tourists for a limited period.

Oostende

Although Belgium is not famous for its beaches, Oostende’s beach is well-known in Europe.

The city has a sandy coastline along which runs a long promenade. Excellent hotels await tourists, justifying its old nickname „The Queen of Beaches”.

Since there is a direct train line from Brussels through Ghent and Bruges, it’s easy to visit here as part of a pleasant day trip.

Kortrijk

The city in West Flanders is an important historical and cultural site. Here, in 1302, the Battle of the Golden Spurs took place, where the Flemish won against the French.

Its old town hosts the Belfry, a medieval bell tower that is part of UNESCO World Heritage and symbolizes the city’s independence. Another significant building is the late Gothic, early Renaissance-style City Hall on the main square, adorned with statues of the Counts of Flanders.

Kortrijk’s medieval history is also reminded by the Our Lady’s Hospital, as well as the only remaining part of the medieval city walls, the Broel Towers, including a bridge spanning the Lys river.

Tournai

This town near the French border is one of Belgium’s oldest cities.

Its main attraction is the Notre-Dame Cathedral. The Romanesque cathedral, later expanded with Gothic elements, is part of UNESCO World Heritage. It houses one of the most important Christian relics, the sarcophagus of Saint Rocus.

Several significant museums operate here. The most famous is the Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des Beaux-Arts), designed by Victor Horta. It contains significant art collections, ranging from medieval and Renaissance works to modern and contemporary pieces.

It’s also famous for its industrial heritage, particularly the ceramics industry, which flourished in the Middle Ages and still plays an important role in the city’s economy today.

Durbuy

Often referred to as the „smallest city in the world.” It earned this title in 1331 when it had only a few hundred inhabitants, but still retains this designation today.

Its old town’s winding streets, historic buildings, and ancient paved squares bring back the medieval atmosphere, making it popular among tourists.

When here, don’t forget to visit the Topiary Park. This unique garden contains more than 250 sculpted plant figures, which is the largest collection of its kind in Europe.

Hasselt

The capital of the Flemish province of Limburg is known for its friendly atmosphere, rich cultural life, and numerous green spaces.

Its most significant building is the Saint Quentin Cathedral. It is especially famous for its high tower, visible from afar. The cathedral contains the relics of Saint Quentin, to whom the cathedral is dedicated, and who is the patron saint of Hasselt.

It also has Europe’s largest Japanese garden, reflecting Japanese culture and philosophy.

La Roche-en-Ardenne

This small town in the Ardennes is popular among hikers and those who enjoy active relaxation besides its historical landmarks.

The ruins of the medieval castle on the hill above the town are one of the main attractions of La Roche-en-Ardenne. The castle offers a magnificent view of the surroundings.

The town’s history is closely linked to World War II. The War Museum presents the events that took place in the region, with special attention to the battles and the life of the civilian population.

Veurne

In this town near the Belgian coast and the French border, we can see several well-preserved medieval buildings.

The Grote Markt (Great Market) in the town center is one of the main attractions, around which the town’s most important buildings are grouped. Particularly notable is the Saint Walburga Church, an impressive Gothic building, as well as the Town Hall.

Another significant attraction is the Spanish Pavilion, dating from the Spanish rule, and representing a fine example of Flemish Renaissance architecture.
