Arles

The city at the Rhône delta attracts visitors with its Roman heritage and connection to Van Gogh. The meeting of antiquity and modern times characterizes this place, where both the amphitheater and the medieval old town define its character. The city’s atmosphere inspired Van Gogh to create his most famous paintings.

The Roman amphitheater is still in use today: in summer, we can attend bullfights and concerts. The ruins of the ancient theater are also visitable, where marble columns and statue fragments hint at its former splendor.

Throughout the city streets, signs indicating the locations of Van Gogh’s paintings guide us. The Foundation Van Gogh honors the painter’s memory with temporary exhibitions. The wild landscape of the nearby Camargue, with horses, bulls, and flamingos, completes the experience. Valensole Plateau

The vast lavender fields turn the landscape purple in summer. The plateau is one of Provence’s most characteristic regions, where the rows of fragrant plants stretch for kilometers.

The sporadically standing farmhouses and solitary trees among the fields create a perfect composition. During the lavender harvest, the air is filled with the aroma of the fragrant plant. In the National Park area, we can observe bird life from observation towers, where hundreds of species live or migrate through. Thousands of flamingos can be seen on the shores of shallow lakes, where the salty water nourishes them.

The gardians – local cowboys – herd the black bulls on horseback according to traditional customs. Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a seaside settlement, is the region’s center, where its Roman church is considered a pilgrimage site. Toulon

The Glanum Roman archaeological site is located near the town, where remains of temples, baths, and residential houses can be seen. The triumphal arch and mausoleum have survived in particularly good condition.

Orange

The village’s most striking feature is the chain stretched between two cliff faces, from which a golden star hangs. According to legend, a knight placed it there as a vow upon his return from the Crusades.

The Gros Horloge, or Great Clock, is a 14th-century astronomical clock that keeps time above an ornately carved archway. Passing under the clockwork, one arrives directly at the cathedral, which became world-famous thanks to Monet’s paintings. The cathedral’s facade shows different faces in various lights, just as the painter immortalized it.

The downtown streets are lined with half-timbered houses that radiate a cheerful atmosphere with their colorful beams. In the center of Place du Vieux-Marché, the old market square, stands the simple monument where Joan of Arc died at the stake.

Omaha Beach

On this sandy beach on June 6, 1944, during D-Day, American troops landed, and it became the site of one of the most severe battles.

Arromanches-les-Bains

This small seaside town holds a special place in history, thanks to the events after D-Day. After the landing, the Allies built a temporary port here that enabled the massive transfer of troops and equipment.

Walking along the shore, the gigantic concrete blocks still stand in the sea like some futuristic art installation. These Phoenix ship wrecks once formed parts of the artificial harbor and could transport 9,000 tons of goods daily through them. The maritime undertaking was an engineering marvel of its time.

The 360-degree circular panorama room brings the landing events to life with a modern presentation. From the hilltop, there’s a beautiful view of the sea and historical monuments. In the small town, there are also several good restaurants where local seafood and Normandy cheeses can be tasted.

Giverny

In this small village in the Seine Valley, Claude Monet lived and worked for more than four decades.

The painter’s house and garden now operate as a museum, and thousands make pilgrimages here every year to see the place that inspired so many famous works. The pink plastered house and beautiful gardens have perfectly preserved the atmosphere in which the master worked.

The garden is divided into two main parts: the flower courtyard and the famous water garden. In the flower garden, colors change according to seasons, with tulips in spring, roses and daffodils decorating the paths in summer. Monet designed the garden himself so he would always have something to paint, and he chose plants for pictorial harmony.

Caen

William the Conqueror’s birthplace is Normandy’s dynamically developing urban center.

World War II devastation severely affected it, yet it managed to preserve its historical treasures and cultural significance. The city is a perfect starting point for discovering the Normandy landing sites, while its own attractions are worth an extended stay.

The medieval castle’s imposing walls still stand in the heart of the city, which William the Conqueror had built around 1060. Within the castle walls, two museums operate, presenting Normandy’s history and art. The nearby Abbaye aux Hommes, the men’s abbey, is also William’s foundation, and the conqueror’s resting place is located here.

The Mémorial de Caen, the peace museum, presents the history of 20th-century wars with a modern approach. The work depicts William the Conqueror’s conquest of England in 1066 in 58 scenes, providing special insight into medieval life and warfare. Visitors can admire this exceptional historical document in a specially built museum, which was created with astonishing detail.

The Notre-Dame Cathedral was built in the 11th century, combining Gothic and Romanesque style elements. The interior space is monumental, the stained glass windows create a beautiful play of light. Near the town is also the British war cemetery, which is the resting place of more than 4,000 fallen soldiers, with a beautifully maintained garden and monument.

Honfleur

The port city at the Seine estuary has long been a favorite of artists, who were attracted by the special light and picturesque harbor.

Around the Vieux Bassin, the old harbor, colorful tall houses line up, whose reflection on the water provides a truly photogenic sight. The city has preserved its authentic atmosphere, and today is still characterized by vibrant artistic life in streets full of galleries.

Le Havre

The rebuilt port city’s modern appearance may be initially surprising, but it quickly reveals its unique beauty.

World War II bombings almost completely destroyed the city, which was then rebuilt from concrete based on architect Auguste Perret’s plans. UNESCO declared this special urban planning experiment a World Heritage site in 2005.

The Saint Joseph Church’s 107-meter-high tower signals the city from afar, with more than 12,000 stained glass windows inside. Besides modern architecture, the harbor’s pulsating life characterizes the city, which is France’s second-largest sea gateway. The long sandy beach and promenade offer a great location for a pleasant afternoon walk.

MuMa, the modern art museum, has a stunning impressionist collection. Alongside works by Monet, Renoir and other masters, contemporary artists’ works are also featured. Deauville

The pearl of the Normandy Riviera attracts visitors with its elegant atmosphere and wide sandy beach.

It became a popular resort in the 19th century when the Parisian aristocracy discovered this seaside town. Today it still retains its distinguished character with beautiful villas, luxury hotels and the famous boardwalk promenade, along which colorful umbrellas mark different beach sections.

Les Planches, the wooden-built seaside promenade, boasts Hollywood-style decorated cabins. Each cabin bears the name of an American film star who participated in the city’s famous film festival. On the wide beach, riders practice, which provides a special sight, as Deauville is also known as a horse racing center.

In August, the city is particularly lively when the film festival and horse races simultaneously attract an international audience, but even in quieter periods it’s pleasant to walk around the harbor or on the beach.

Fécamp

The fishing town nestled in white cliffs is a special mix of maritime traditions and religious heritage, giving it a unique character. Fishing boats still work in the harbor today, and the taste of fresh fish can be felt in every restaurant.

The Benedictine Palace building was built in neo-Gothic style, and the famous herbal liqueur is made here. Visitors can learn about the liqueur’s more than 500-year history and the secrets of its preparation, for which allegedly 27 different plants are used. The building’s museum also preserves a valuable art collection.

The Sainte-Trinité church, also known as the Abbey church, is an impressively sized structure in the heart of the city. According to legend, a vessel containing Christ’s blood washed up here, making the city a pilgrimage site. Suisse Normande

The name is somewhat misleading, as it’s not in Switzerland but in the heart of Normandy.

The area stretching in the Orne river valley reminds one of Alpine landscape with its rocky gorges and green hills, hence its name. It’s a paradise for nature lovers and those seeking active relaxation, where numerous hiking trails and water sports opportunities await visitors.

The Roche d’Oëtre viewpoint rises 118 meters above the valley, from where an amazing panorama unfolds before us. The sight of the river winding between cliff faces and wooded hills is wonderful. Rock climbing, kayaking and paragliding are also popular in the area.

Small villages like Clécy or Pont-d’Ouilly are excellent starting points for exploration. In autumn, the hillsides offer colorful forest views, while in spring flowering apple trees cover the landscape.

Lisieux

The small town became one of the Catholic world’s significant pilgrimage sites, thanks to Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. The Carmelite nun’s short life and spiritual legacy inspired millions worldwide.

The Sainte-Thérèse Basilica is a monumental structure that was consecrated in 1954 and is the second-largest church in France. The dome’s height is 95 meters, the interior space is decorated with mosaics and stained glass windows. From the basilica there’s a beautiful view toward the Normandy hills. In the crypt, chapels from several countries can be found, showing the international nature of Thérèse’s cult.

Côte d’Albâtre

The alabaster coast name perfectly describes this special coastal section, where white limestone cliffs rise above the sea.

This more than 120-kilometer section stretches between Étretat and Dieppe, which became world-famous with its dramatic cliff formations and natural arches. The contrast of white walls with the blue sea and green grassy plateaus provides a picturesque sight.

At Étretat are the most famous rock formations, the Aiguille, or needle-shaped rock, and natural stone arches. It was a favorite painting spot of Monet and other impressionists, and today is still a photographers’ paradise. Along the coast, smaller fishing villages like Yport or Veules-les-Roses offer an intimate atmosphere. Barfleur

This tiny fishing village is located at Normandy’s easternmost tip and has preserved its authentic maritime character. The village was once a significant port; William the Conqueror departed from here toward England, and in the Middle Ages it played an important commercial role.

Walking among the granite houses, we feel as if time has stopped. Seaside restaurants offer fresh oysters and fish, which are prepared directly from local catches. Lobster is a special delicacy here, which is definitely worth tasting.

The nearby Gatteville-le-Phare lighthouse is France’s second-tallest tower at 75 meters. After climbing 365 steps, an unparalleled view opens to the English Channel and the surrounding countryside.

Parc Naturel Régional des Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin

The Cotentin Peninsula’s marshlands offer a unique natural experience in Normandy.

Évreux

The seat of Eure department is located between the Seine and continental Normandy and often falls off tourists’ itineraries. Yet the city’s historic center is worth visiting, especially because of its stunning cathedral. The city rebuilt after World War II destruction combines modern and historical elements, creating an interesting contrast.

The Notre-Dame Cathedral is a special treasure of the city, which combines Gothic and Renaissance style elements. Some of the stained glass windows date from the 13th century and create a wonderful play of light inside the church. The carved stonework and traces of different construction periods are clearly visible on the building.

One of Europe’s most difficult and beautiful long-distance hiking trails, crossing Corsica from northeast to southwest. The 180-kilometer-long route can be completed in 15-16 days and leads across the island’s highest peaks. The trail has existed since 1972 and has since become one of the world’s most challenging hiking trails.

The route is divided into two main sections: the northern part (between Calenzana and Vizzavona) is considered more difficult, with steep rocky sections and difficult terrain. The southern part (between Vizzavona and Conca) is somewhat easier but still requires serious physical preparation. During the hike, a 2,700-meter altitude difference must be overcome, and the highest point is the 2,225-meter Breche de Capitello.

Along the route, there are 16 refuges (mountain huts). During the GR20 crossing, hikers can discover Corsica’s wildest landscapes: granite rocks, mountain lakes, ancient forests, and alpine meadows. The hike offers wonderful views of the Mediterranean Sea and the island’s most beautiful landscapes.

Scandola Nature Reserve

The UNESCO World Heritage site on Corsica’s western coast has been a protected area since 1975. This is France’s first combined marine and terrestrial protected area, covering 1,669 hectares of marine and 919 hectares of terrestrial territory.

Scandola can only be approached by sea, with boats departing from the ports of Porto, Ajaccio, or Calvi. The nature reserve is home to numerous rare plant and animal species, including cormorants, peregrine falcons, and Mediterranean seals. Spelunca Valley

The valley is one of Corsica’s most romantic landscapes, stretching between Porto and Evisa. Its name derives from the Corsican word „spilonca” meaning cave, referring to the area’s numerous natural caves. The valley was carved by the Porto River over millennia into the granite rocks, creating special formations.

Filitosa Prehistoric Site

Corsica’s most important prehistoric archaeological site, testifying to 8,000 years of human presence. The site is located near Propriano Bay and belongs to Europe’s most significant megalithic monuments. The first discoveries were made in 1946, and continuous archaeological research has been conducted here since then.

The site’s most special pieces are the „statue-menhir” stone sculptures, created between 3300 and 1200 BC. These granite statues depict human figures with weapons and faces, outstanding creations of Bronze Age Corsican culture. More than 70 statue remains have been found on the site, including complete figures and fragments.

The Filitosa museum presents a rich collection from prehistoric Corsican life: pottery fragments, weapons, jewelry, and everyday objects. Walking in the site’s park, visitors can view the menhirs and ancient settlement remains.

Palombaggia Beach

Rondinara Beach

A perfectly semicircular bay on the island’s southeastern coast, one of the most picturesque beaches on the island.

Located between Bonifacio and Porto-Vecchio, in a naturally protected bay surrounded by high cliffs. The beach is covered with fine white sand. The water here is particularly clear and warm, as the protected bay shape shields it from large waves and currents.

This engineering marvel is 240 km long and starts from Toulouse, where it meets the Garonne River at the Canal de Brienne. The promenade and bicycle path along the canal are ideal for those seeking relaxation. There is also the possibility to rent small boats to explore the picturesque sections and locks of the canal.

It is an important part of Toulouse’s cultural heritage and remains a functioning waterway to this day.

La Daurade District and Quay

The district is one of the most attractive parts of Toulouse’s historical center, located on the right bank of the Garonne River.

It gets its name from the former La Daurade Benedictine monastery, in whose place the Notre-Dame de la Daurade Basilica now stands, where the statue of the city’s patron saint, the Black Madonna, is located.

The special atmosphere of the quay is created by the 18th-century facades and the view opening to the river. In summer, this is one of Toulouse’s favorite resting places. The quay occasionally hosts outdoor concerts and events, especially during summer festivals.

In the narrow streets of the district, there are numerous art galleries, fashionable boutiques, and cozy restaurants. La Daurade market is famous for fresh local products and gastronomic specialties. Tourist boats on the river also depart from the quay.

Dôme de La Grave

One of Toulouse’s most iconic buildings, located on the left bank of the Garonne River, and recognizable from a distance by its dome.

The history of the building complex dates back to the 12th century when it served as a shelter for pilgrims and the poor. The current dome was built in the 18th century and houses a chapel dedicated to Saint Joseph. Over the centuries, the building functioned as a hospital and later as a psychiatric institution.

The area has undergone significant renovation in recent years and has been transformed into a cultural center: new public spaces, promenades, and cultural venues have been created. From the building and the surrounding park, there is a breathtaking view of the river and the city.

Thanks to its southern location, Toulouse has a climate that combines Mediterranean and oceanic influences, resulting in long, warm summers and mild winters. The city’s climate is pleasant for tourists for most of the year.

Spring (March-May):

Spring in Toulouse brings gradually warming weather, with pleasant temperatures between 10-20°C. The city’s parks and gardens are in bloom during this time, especially the Japanese garden and botanical gardens offer an impressive sight. Spring rains generally come in the form of short showers but rarely disrupt sightseeing.

Summer (June-August):

In the summer months, Toulouse’s weather is hot and sunny, with temperatures often reaching 30°C. The long summer days and evening festivals, outdoor events make this period particularly attractive to visitors. The banks of the Garonne River and the city parks provide a pleasant refuge from the heat.

Autumn (September-November):

Autumn brings mild weather with temperatures between 15-25°C. With a decrease in the number of tourists, this period may be ideal for a more peaceful exploration of the city. The autumn colors offer a picturesque view, especially in the city’s parks and along the Canal du Midi. The harvest season offers numerous gastronomic events and wine tastings in the region.

Winter (December-February):

Winter in Toulouse is relatively mild, with temperatures rarely dropping below freezing, generally ranging between 5-10°C. Although this period is more rainy, the city is dressed in Christmas decorations, and numerous festive events await visitors. The rich program offerings of museums and cultural institutions make the winter period attractive as well.

Best time to travel

The most ideal time to visit Toulouse is spring (April-June) and early autumn (September-October), when the weather is pleasant, precipitation is moderate, and the city’s natural and cultural values can be best enjoyed.

It is France’s second-largest city and largest port, and Europe’s fifth-largest port. Its history dates back to ancient times, founded by the Greeks around 600 BC.

Marseille attractions

Notre-Dame de la Garde

Marseille’s most famous and most visited attraction, located at the city’s highest point on a 150-meter-high hill.

The basilica, consecrated in 1864, was built in neo-Byzantine style with its characteristic golden statue of the Virgin Mary, which watches over the city and sailors like a guardian angel. Locals affectionately call it „La Bonne Mère” (The Good Mother). The church’s rich decorations, colorful mosaics, and impressive frescoes provide an unparalleled sight.

From the viewing terrace, there is a breathtaking panorama of Marseille, the Vieux-Port, the surrounding mountains, and the Mediterranean Sea.

Vieux-Port

The port is Marseille’s center, where you can always see numerous yachts and boats.

It has played an important role since the Greek founding and was the center of the city’s maritime trade for centuries. Today, it’s a popular meeting place for locals and tourists, full of bars, restaurants, and fish markets. The morning fish market is particularly popular, where local fishermen offer their fresh catch.

Boats depart from the port to nearby attractions, such as the Château d’If fortress and the magnificent rocks of the Calanques.

Fort Saint-Jean

One of Marseille’s iconic historical attractions rises at the northern entrance of the Vieux-Port.

The fort was built during the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King, in 1660, partly to protect the port and partly to control the local population, who had frequently rebelled against royal power. The fort served as a military facility for centuries and later also functioned as a prison, especially during the French Revolution.

Today, it has been completely renovated and is one of the city’s most popular tourist destinations. Visitors can explore the fort’s old bastions, towers, and enjoy views of the port, city, and Mediterranean Sea.

The fort has become part of the MUCEM cultural center, connected by a modern pedestrian bridge.

MUCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations)

Built as part of Fort Saint-Jean, this museum is one of the most important city institutions.

Its exhibitions are extremely diverse, exploring the region’s history, culture, social and religious traditions. Its themes include agriculture, maritime life, religions, and the daily life of Mediterranean civilizations.

The museum consists of two main buildings. The modern J4 building, designed by architect Rudy Ricciotti, is famous for its perforated concrete facade. The other part is the historic Fort Saint-Jean, connected to the modern building by a pedestrian bridge.

Fort Saint-Nicolas

Marseille’s most imposing fortress is located on the southern side of the Vieux-Port, directly opposite Fort Saint-Jean.

The fort was built in 1660 on the orders of Louis XIV, based on the plans of Marquis de Clerville. Interestingly, the fort’s cannons were also aimed at the city, signifying the presence and power of royal authority.

Fort Saint-Nicolas consists of two parts: the upper fort (Haute Forteresse), which is the main military facility, and the lower part (Basse Forteresse), located in the immediate vicinity of the port. The fort’s thick walls and massive bastions are masterpieces of classical French military architecture.

In the 19th century, the fort also served as a prison, and its military significance decreased over time. Today it’s protected as a monument, although only partially open to the public. From the top of the fort, there are stunning views of Marseille, the Vieux-Port, and the Mediterranean Sea.

Palais du Pharo

This elegant historical building is located at the southern tip of the port entrance.

The palace was built by Emperor Napoleon III in 1858 for Empress Eugénie, although she never used it as a residence. It was later donated to the city and has since been used for various purposes. Today it’s an important conference and event center, but tourists also enjoy visiting the building and park.

The surrounding park, the Jardin du Pharo, offers pleasant relaxation. From here, there are magnificent views of the Vieux-Port, Fort Saint-Jean, and Château d’If island.

Rue de la République

One of Marseille’s most important boulevards, connecting the historic center with the modern Joliette district.

It was created in the second half of the 19th century as part of Napoleon III’s urban planning project, which aimed to make Marseille similar to modern European cities of the era. The street’s design resembles Baron Haussmann’s Parisian boulevards: wide, straight, lined with tall-facade, symmetrically built houses.

Porte d’Aix

Marseille’s triumphal arch stands at the beginning of the road leading to Aix-en-Provence, hence its name.

The monument was originally built on Napoleon’s orders to commemorate the French army’s victories. Construction began in 1825 but was finally completed during the Bourbon Restoration in 1839. The arch was designed by Michel-Robert Penchaud, who created the monument in the neoclassical style of the period.

The arch’s richly decorated carvings and reliefs depict historical events and figures that proclaim France’s glorious victories. The facades feature mythological scenes and allegorical figures.

La Panier

Marseille’s oldest quarter is located on a hill north of the Vieux-Port. Its name, „The Basket” comes from the markets that operated here in the past.

Its narrow, winding streets, cobblestone alleys, and colorful houses exude a unique Mediterranean atmosphere. The quarter is full of charming cafes, local craft shops, and galleries. Street art decorating the walls is also characteristic.

It contains several iconic buildings, including the Vieille Charité, a 17th-century baroque building that now houses museums and a cultural center. Also located here is the Place des Moulins, a square once filled with mills that was the center of the city’s economic life.

Cathédrale de la Major

The city’s other most significant church stands at the edge of the Le Panier quarter.

The original Romanesque cathedral stood here in the 12th century, but in the 19th century, it was replaced by a larger, more representative building to reflect Marseille’s maritime and commercial importance. Construction of the new cathedral began in 1852 and took nearly 40 years.

With its impressive dimensions, it’s one of the world’s largest cathedrals: 142 meters long, with domes reaching 70 meters in height. The building’s facade is decorated with white and green limestone stripes, while its interior is dominated by rich mosaics, marble inlays, and huge arches.

Palais Longchamp

The palace in Longchamp Park stands out not only for its architectural beauty but also for its historical and cultural significance.

Opened in 1869, the palace was built in honor of the Canal de Marseille aqueduct. This brought water from the Durance River to the city, ending the drinking water shortage. It was designed by Henri-Jacques Espérandieu in neoclassical style. The complex is dominated by a huge, monumental fountain. The fountain’s central figure features three female figures symbolizing the Mediterranean Sea, surrounded by waterfalls and animal sculptures.

The palace’s two wings house significant cultural institutions. One contains the Musée des Beaux-Arts, which showcases masterpieces of 16th-19th century painting, while the other houses the Museum of Natural History, displaying natural science collections.

Parc Borély

One of Marseille’s largest and most beautiful parks is a few minutes’ walk from the Mediterranean coast.

At the center of the park stands the Château Borély, a beautiful neoclassical castle built in 1767 by Joseph Borély, a wealthy Marseille merchant. The castle is now home to the Museum of Decorative Arts, Faience, and Fashion, famous for its decorative art and ceramic collections.

Several garden types can be discovered: the formal, geometric French garden, the romantic, irregular English garden, and the peaceful and exotic Japanese garden.

La Friche la Belle de Mai

This cultural center was developed on the site of a former tobacco factory in the city’s Belle de Mai quarter.

The industrial building complex was transformed to serve multiple functions: exhibition spaces, theaters, concert venues, rehearsal rooms, art studios, and coworking offices.

The building’s roof terrace, Le Toit-Terrasse, is particularly popular with visitors. This huge outdoor space offers fantastic views of Marseille.

Unité d’Habitation

One of Marseille’s most iconic buildings became world-famous as a masterpiece of modern architecture.

Designed by legendary Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, it was built between 1947 and 1952. This building perfectly embodies the architect’s modernist urban planning principles, which aimed to create functional, self-sustaining residential communities.

The building is 17 stories high and nearly 165 meters long, placed on a concrete frame that allows the building’s lower level to be freely accessible. The house contains 337 residential units. It’s actually not just a residential building but a mini-settlement.

Château d’If

The fortress located just a few kilometers from the city on If island is popular due to its literary significance.

Built in 1524 on the orders of King Francis I, the fortification originally served to protect the city, but due to its strategic location, it was soon converted into a prison.

It became world-famous as the fictional prison of Edmond Dantès in „The Count of Monte Cristo”. Although Dumas’s story is purely fiction, the novel’s success has attracted thousands of tourists since the 19th century.

Musée d’Histoire de Marseille

The city’s most important and one of its largest museums is located in the Vieux-Port quarter.

The museum presents the city’s 2,600-year history, from Marseille’s founding to the present day. Its collection is extremely diverse, with more than 4,000 exhibited items including archaeological findings, artifacts, maps, and multimedia presentations. Among the most important attractions is the remains of an ancient Greek ship, considered one of the world’s best-preserved ancient vessels.

A highlight of the museum is the Jardin des Vestiges, an outdoor archaeological area that preserves the remains of the port and city walls of ancient Massalia (today’s Marseille).

The bus departs from the airport’s south gate H and west gate D.

Paris transportation is based on the metro and RER suburban trains, which densely cover the city and its immediate surroundings.

Paris is divided into five zones (city center is zone 1). Almost all attractions are within zone 1.

Single ticket (T+)

Valid within the Île-de-France region on buses, trams, metro, and the Montmartre funicular, regardless of zones.

For RER, it’s only valid within zone 1.

The single-ticket system is a bit complicated because transfers are allowed, but not always! I’ll try to explain it simply:

• On metro, RER, from metro to RER, and from RER to metro, it’s valid for unlimited transfers within 90 minutes;
• From tram to tram, tram to bus, bus to bus, and bus to tram, it’s valid for unlimited transfers within 90 minutes;
• Transfers from bus/tram to metro/RER and vice versa are not possible!

France’s 5th largest city is located on the Mediterranean coast, halfway between Marseille and Genoa. Along with Cannes and Monaco, it’s one of the most popular European destinations.

Nice attractions

Promenade des Anglais

Nice’s most famous attraction, featured in most pictures of the city.

It means „English Promenade,” referring to its original construction for English tourists who visited the city in winter. The nearly 7 km long promenade is lined with palm trees and numerous elegant hotels, restaurants, and cafes.

It’s one of the city’s central meeting places, where beachgoers, relaxers, and joggers can enjoy themselves. It’s also the venue for several famous festivals, including the Nice Carnival.

Castle Hill (Colline du Château)

The 92-meter high hill is located in the eastern part of the city center, offering breathtaking views of the city, the port, and the Mediterranean Sea.

Although the castle no longer stands, there’s a beautiful park at the top of the hill, which is a popular resting place for locals and tourists alike. The park features an impressive waterfall, which is particularly spectacular on summer evenings when it’s illuminated.

It can be approached on foot from several directions, but there’s also an elevator from the seaside.

Old Town (Vieux Nice)

This charming neighborhood is located at the western foot of Castle Hill. The historic district, with its narrow, winding streets and brightly colored houses, evokes medieval Nice.

One of its main parts is Cours Saleya, a market filled with flowers and local products. Here you can taste local specialties like socca or pissaladière.

The small streets are full of shops, restaurants, and cafes, making it an unmissable part of the city.

Nice Cathedral (Sainte-Réparate de Nice)

The dominant building of the Old Town. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Reparata, Nice’s patron saint, who was a young Palestinian martyr.

The Baroque-style church was built in the 17th century and consecrated in 1699. Its impressive dome and bell tower are recognizable from afar in the Old Town skyline. It has ten chapels, each dedicated to different saints.

The organ, built in 1868, has excellent acoustics and regularly hosts concerts. The building’s floor is decorated with geometric patterns of black and white stones, which is a characteristic element of the Ligurian Baroque style.

Place Masséna

This square is one of Nice’s most important and spectacular public spaces.

The square is named after Marshal André Masséna, a native of Nice and one of Napoleon’s most excellent generals. Its distinctive black and white checkered stone paving creates an optical illusion.

The buildings around the square, with their red facades and green shutters, represent a typical Nice style. In the center is the Fountain of the Sun (Fontaine du Soleil), with a bronze statue of the Greek god Apollo rising in its center.

Place Garibaldi

The other most important square is named after Giuseppe Garibaldi, the hero of Italian unity, who was born in Nice.

The square was built in the 18th century and is a characteristic example of Piedmontese Baroque architecture. Its central part is adorned with an impressive statue of Garibaldi, erected in 1891.

The buildings on the square form a harmonious overall picture with their uniform yellowish-ochre facades and symmetrical arrangement. On the ground floor, there are arcades under which terraces of restaurants and cafes can be found.

Port Lympia

Nice’s port is located near Castle Hill, surrounded by beautiful colorful buildings and many boats.

Notre-Dame de Nice

This Neo-Gothic style building is located in the city center on Avenue Jean-Médecin.

Construction of the church began in 1864 and was completed in 1868, designed by architects Louis Lenormand and Charles Lenormand. Its external appearance strongly resembles the Notre-Dame in Paris, although smaller in size.

Its facade is adorned with two 65-meter high towers, between which is a large rose window. The interior of the church is impressive, with its colorful stained glass windows and carved altars particularly noteworthy. It houses one of the largest organs in France.

Saint Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral (Saint-Nicolas de Nice)

The church is the largest Orthodox church in Western Europe, located in the Cimier district of the city.

Construction of the building began in 1912 with the support of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and was consecrated in 1912. The church was designed by Russian architect Mikhail Preobrazhensky, who based it on the style of the Kremlin churches in Moscow.

The cathedral’s characteristic onion domes and colorful exterior make it immediately recognizable. It has six domes, of which the central one is the largest, and each is crowned with a gilded cross. Its interior is essentially Byzantine in style, rich with frescoes, icons, and mosaics.

Phoenix Park

This seven-hectare park is located in the western part of the city, near the airport.

The central element of the park is a huge, 25-meter high greenhouse, the „Green Diamond” (Diamant Vert), which is home to more than 2,500 plant species. It’s one of the largest greenhouses in Europe, showcasing tropical and subtropical plants.

The park features numerous themed gardens, including Mediterranean, African, and Asian plants. The park is also home to various animal species, including flamingos, parrots, and reptiles.

Matisse Museum

One of Nice’s most famous museums, showcasing the work of Henri Matisse, one of the most significant artists of the 20th century.

The institution is housed in a beautiful 17th-century Genoese villa, the Villa des Arènes. This area was particularly dear to Matisse, who spent the last years of his life in Nice.

The museum’s collection provides a comprehensive view of Matisse’s artistic career, from early works to the last creations. The exhibited objects include paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, and the artist’s famous paper cut-outs. It also showcases Matisse’s creative process, often displaying different versions or preliminary studies of a work side by side.

Marc Chagall Museum

Opened in 1973, the museum houses the world’s largest collection of Chagall’s works.

Its most famous work is the „Biblical Message” series, consisting of 17 large paintings depicting Old Testament stories. The museum also showcases many other Chagall works, including paintings, graphics, and stained glass window designs.

Panorama du Mont-Boron

Nice’s panorama can be best admired from here.

Mont Boron hill rises east of the city, most easily reached by bus 33. There’s a viewpoint with a few benches, offering a wonderful view not only of the city but also of the surrounding mountains and the sea.

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

The palace is located near Nice, in the town of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, but it’s worth visiting.

The building was commissioned by Baroness Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild between 1905 and 1912. The villa was built in Italian Renaissance style and is surrounded by nine themed gardens, each representing a different style. These include French, Spanish, Japanese, and exotic gardens.

It houses a rich collection that includes paintings, sculptures, porcelains, and antique furniture. The villa’s furnishings span from the 15th to the 19th century.

One of its most unique features is the musical fountain located in front of the main entrance. At specific times, the water display starts with classical music accompaniment.
