This unique lake creates an optical illusion, as if floating above the sea. In reality, it sits about 30 meters above sea level, but from the right angle, it appears to hover high above the waves. The attraction on Vágar island is easily accessible via a hiking trail.

During the hike, you follow a simple path suitable even for beginner hikers. The landscape is varied: pastures, rocky sections, and unparalleled viewpoints alternate. Reaching the lake shore, you’ll understand why this place became famous worldwide.

The nearby Trælanípa cliff wall looks down on the ocean from a stunning height. Many combine the lake hike with visiting the cliffs, so you can see both natural wonders in one trip. The wind can be very strong here, so it’s worth approaching the cliff edge carefully.

Gjógv

In the north, on Eysturoy island, lies this charming little village, which takes its name from a natural gorge in the cliffs. The gorge also serves as the village harbor, where fishing boats are protected from the open sea waves.

The village counts only a few dozen residents, but the hospitality here is enormous. Colorful houses line the hillside, their grass-covered roofs harmoniously blending into the landscape.

The area’s hiking trails offer excellent opportunities to explore the wildness of the island’s northern part. Summer is especially recommended for visiting, when the days are long and nature blooms in all its glory.

Kalsoy Island and Kallur Lighthouse

The island’s nickname is „the flute” – and not without reason, as its long and narrow shape resembles this instrument. The island, accessible through tunnels, hides four tiny villages where practically only sheep and birds roam. The lighthouse standing at the island’s northern tip is one of the most visited places in the Faroe Islands.

The hike to Kallur Lighthouse is moderately difficult, but the view is worth every step. Along the path, countless bird species nest in summer, including puffins. From the lighthouse, you’re greeted by views of endless ocean and green mountains in every direction.

You can reach the island by ferry, which is an experience in itself. During the journey, you can get close to the high cliffs and observe marine life. In stormy weather, the ferry service may be canceled, so it’s worth checking the weather and schedule in advance.

Vestmanna Bird Cliffs

The cliffs running along the western coast are a true paradise for bird lovers. On a boat tour, you can see bird colonies nesting on the high cliff walls up close, where thousands live together. The tour also takes the boat into caves and narrow passages if weather permits.

Masses of puffins, guillemots, and kittiwakes populate the cliffs. The birds’ screeching and the crashing waves create a unique sound concert. The vertical cliff walls rise to heights of several hundred meters, where cascading waterfalls and green vegetation form a colorful mosaic.

The tour is most interesting in spring and early summer when the birds hatch their chicks. The boat captains know the best spots precisely and gladly share local stories.

Saksun

This fairytale village sits in a natural amphitheater surrounded by high mountains.

The lagoon at the valley bottom changes its character with the tides, sometimes a lake, sometimes a muddy area. The village consists of just a few houses, but every building is beautifully preserved. The road leading to the village is an adventure in itself, narrow and winding, but offering beautiful views.

The old Dúvugarðar wooden house functions as a museum, showcasing traditional Faroese life. The grass roofs and traditional black-painted wooden walls perfectly illustrate how people lived here generations ago.

Mykines Island

The westernmost island is one of the Faroe Islands’ most iconic places, where nature still reigns. The island can only be reached by ferry, and during stormy periods, travel becomes impossible for days. Only a few permanent residents live on the island, but tourists and researchers arrive in summer.

The puffin colonies are the island’s main attractions, especially on the small island of Mykineshólmur, accessible by a footbridge. From June to August, thousands nest here, entertaining visitors with their colorful beaks and comical movements. Bird watching here is an unforgettable experience.

Kirkjubøur

Slættaratindur

At 880 meters high, the Faroe Islands’ highest point is every hiker’s dream. The route to the summit on Eysturoy island contains sections of varying difficulty, but well-marked paths help climbers. On clear days, most of the islands are visible from the peak, and you can even see Iceland.

During the hike, you experience every element of the Faroese landscape: pastures, rocky sections, streams, and waterfalls. Vegetation gradually becomes sparse as you ascend. Rising fog often creates a magical atmosphere on the mountainside.

Routes to the summit start from different villages, but the most popular starts from Gjógv. In summer, the days are long, so you can even start the hike in late afternoon.

Drangarnir

These two monumental sea stacks rise out of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Vágar Island.

The larger one is about 80 meters high, while the smaller one is 60 meters high. A natural stone bridge spans between the two stacks, creating a unique sight. A difficult hiking trail leads to the cliffs from the village of Sørvágur, which is recommended for experienced hikers.

Tourist traffic reaches its peak during two periods. The winter sports season begins in December and ends at the end of March. The summer season from July to September 15th is even more popular. During this time, rock climbers and tourists „invade” the Dolomites, taking advantage of the mountain region’s hiking trails and rocks.

After taking the Seceda cable car from the Ortisei valley, we find ourselves on a plateau at 2,519 meters high, from where there’s a 360-degree view of the surrounding peaks. The mountain range’s characteristic light gray limestone towers rise here in a particularly dramatic way above the green pastures.

Seceda’s specialty lies in its varied hiking opportunities. From easy walks to challenging via ferratas for experienced mountaineers, every difficulty level can be found here. The trail leading to Col Raiser peak is particularly popular, as along the way we can admire the wild romantic landscape of Puez-Odle Nature Park from numerous viewpoints.

Alpe di Siusi

Europe’s largest high-altitude pasture, a magical plateau of 57 square kilometers between 1,680-2,350 meters. This unique natural environment harmoniously combines Alpine meadows, traditional Tyrolean wooden houses, and the sight of steeply rising Dolomite peaks.

The pasture’s history goes back centuries, when local farmers drove their animals here in summer. Traditional mountain farms still operate today, where we can taste fresh cheeses and other Tyrolean specialties.

Alpe di Siusi is also known as a hiking paradise, with more than 300 kilometers of marked trails. In winter, it becomes a destination for cross-country skiers and winter hikers, when snow buries the green meadows under a thick blanket. The rock formations called „Witches’ Benches” are particularly popular photo subjects, where nature has carved special sculptures from limestone.

Sella Pass (Passo Sella)

The 2,244-meter-high Sella Pass is one of the busiest crossings in the Dolomites, connecting four valleys: Val Gardena, Val di Fassa, Val Badia, and Livinallongo del Col di Lana valleys. Due to the pass’s central location, it plays a key role in the region’s tourism network.

The Sella Ronda, one of the world’s most famous ski circuits, starts from here. In summer, it’s a paradise for cyclists and motorcyclists, as the serpentine roads offer excellent views of the surrounding peaks.

The pass’s historical significance is not negligible either: it was a strategically important location during World War I, and wartime tactical monuments are still visible today. Passo Pordoi

The 2,239-meter-high Pordoi Pass rightfully bears the title „Queen of the Dolomites” as it offers the most comprehensive panorama of the mountain range’s peaks.

The cable car from the pass to the top of Sass Pordoi provides direct access to the 2,950-meter „Terrace of the Dolomites”, from where on clear days you can even glimpse the distant Ortler peak. This viewpoint is particularly popular during sunset times.

The geological richness of the pass area is exceptional: here dark volcanic rock meets light Dolomite limestone, creating a special contrast in the landscape. The Pordoi Pass Museum here presents the area’s geological development and World War I events in detail. Next to the museum stands a 52-meter observation tower that provides an even higher perspective.

Sassolungo Group

One of the most recognizable and photographed mountain ranges in the Dolomites, whose 3,181-meter main peak confidently dominates the surrounding landscape.

It consists of five main peaks, of which Sassopiatto (3,026 m) is the most famous alongside Sassolungo. These steep peaks, divided by vertical walls, offer a monumental sight, especially when viewed from Alpe di Siusi.

The mountain group is extremely interesting from a geological perspective: coral reefs from the Triassic period shaped its current form, which explains the characteristic light color and the terraced structure alternating with steep walls. The Sassolungo Via Ferrata is one of the most classic Dolomite hiking routes, offering an unforgettable experience for experienced hikers near the main peak.

Around the mountain group are several refuges, of which Rifugio Sasso Piatto and Rifugio Demetz are particularly popular. Hiking trails from here also lead to the nearby Puez-Odle Nature Park.

Tofane Mountain Group

The group’s three main peaks – Tofana di Rozes (3,225 m), Tofana di Mezzo (3,244 m), and Tofana di Dentro (3,238 m) – tower above Cortina d’Ampezzo.

These massive peaks, divided by steep walls, offer a monumental sight especially when viewed from the south side. The Tofane’s geological structure is exceptionally varied: the alternation of dark gray main dolomite and lighter limestone layers draws a special pattern on the rocks.

During World War I, the Tofane became strategically important, and numerous historical monuments still preserve the events of that time. The Via Ferrata delle Trincee („trenches via ferrata”) offers a unique hiking experience, as it leads through wartime trenches and bunkers. The Lagazuoi tunnel, which Italian soldiers blew under Austrian positions, now operates as a museum and provides insight into the difficulties of mountain warfare.

The Tofane area’s hiking opportunities are extremely varied: from easy family hikes to extreme rock climbing, everything can be found. Rifugio Giussani and Rifugio Dibona are excellent starting points for exploring higher regions, while the Ra Valles ski lift makes the middle altitudes easily accessible.

Marmolada

Also called the „Queen of the Dolomites” as it contains the mountain range’s highest point, the 3,343-meter Punta Penia.

This imposing mountain range differs from other Dolomite peaks not only in size but also in character: a huge glacier covers the summit regions, which is the Dolomites’ only significant glacier. However, the Marmolada glacier is continuously shrinking due to climate change, giving special significance to visiting it.

The massif’s southern wall is the Dolomites’ largest and steepest rock face, rising more than 1,000 meters above the valley. This „Silver Wall” is beloved by rock climbers, where some of the world’s most difficult climbing routes can be found. The Via Ferrata delle Trincee also runs through the World War I front line here, where Italian and Austro-Hungarian troops fought in the icy heights.

The Marmolada cable car system allows visitors to easily reach 3,265 meters altitude, from where a breathtaking panorama opens over the entire Dolomite mountain range. From the peak on clear days, you can even glimpse the Adriatic Sea, while to the north, the peaks of the Tyrolean and Austrian Alps appear.

Villnöss Valley (Val di Funes)

Perhaps the most photographed Alpine landscape in the world, where the small church of St. Magdalena against the backdrop of the Odle mountain group creates an image that has appeared on countless postcards, calendars, and tourist publications.

The valley’s cultural heritage is special: the population still speaks German today and preserves the traditional Tyrolean architectural style. The peasant houses decorated with carved wooden balconies, the onion-domed church towers, and the traditional form of hayricks create an authentic Alpine atmosphere. The farmers living here still cultivate their lands using traditional methods and make their famous cheeses and meat products.

It’s also known as a hiking paradise: the Adolf Munkel Weg starts from here, which is the valley’s most beautiful panorama route. During the hike, we walk through flowering meadows, cross streams, and can continuously admire the changing faces of the Odle group. The Zanser Alm at the upper end of the valley is a particularly popular destination, from where a short hike leads to the heart of Puez-Odle Nature Park.

Fassa Valley (Val di Fassa)

It belongs to the last bastions of Ladin culture, where a significant part of the population still speaks this ancient Romance dialect today.

Canazei, the valley’s central settlement, is one of the most important tourist centers in the Dolomites. From here, cable cars depart to Belvedere and Col Rodella, from where there’s an unparalleled view of the Marmolada and Sella sections. The settlement’s gastronomy uniquely combines Italian, Austrian, and Ladin traditions: in local restaurants, we can taste canederli dumplings, casunziei filled pasta, and special mountain cheeses.

Among the valley’s natural beauties, the proximity of Lake Carezza and the world of flowering meadows under the Catinaccio group stand out. In summer, the color splendor of Alpine roses and mountain orchids provides a dazzling sight.

Rosengarten Group (Catinaccio)

The mountain group boasts one of the most romantic legends of the Dolomites.

According to tradition, the dwarf king Laurin planted his kingdom with roses, which still make the rocks glow red at sunset – this is the „Enrosadira” phenomenon. The rock towers grouped around the 3,004-meter main peak Catinaccio d’Antermoia offer the most beautiful sight especially when viewed from Lake Carezza.

Among the several Via Ferratas around Rosengarten, the Santner and Laurin routes are the most popular, offering unforgettable experiences for intermediate-level hikers. The surrounding rifugios, especially Rifugio Vajolet and Rifugio Re Alberto, are excellent accommodations.

Bletterbach Gorge

Often referred to as „South Tyrol’s Grand Canyon”: the 8-kilometer-long and 400-meter-deep geological wonder reveals 15 million years of Earth’s history.

40 different rock layers can be observed on the gorge walls, including 280-200 million-year-old Permian red sandstone and the famous dinosaur footprints.

During the gorge tour, numerous fossils and rock samples can be studied: marine shells, corals, and plant remains tell of the time when this area still lay under a tropical sea. The hiking trail is equipped with professional explanatory boards that help understand the phenomena seen. The gorge is a protected natural area, so it can only be visited with a guide.

Around Bletterbach is the Geopark museum, which makes the area’s geological specialties even more understandable with interactive exhibitions and 3D models. The gorge can also be visited in winter, when icicles and snow-covered rock walls create a magical winter landscape.

Most beautiful lakes in the Dolomites

Lago di Carezza

Lake Carezza bears the name „Pearl of the Dolomites”: a magical mountain lake 85 meters long and 295 meters wide, lying at 1,534 meters altitude at the foot of the Catinaccio group.

The lake’s water color constantly changes: from turquoise to emerald green, from deep blue to almost black shades, depending on light conditions and seasons. This color play is due to the lake’s special mineral composition and light refraction.

According to Ladin legend, the lake was created when a wizard failed to seduce a water fairy, so in anger he threw his emeralds and pearls into the lake. The walk around the lake can be completed in about 40 minutes and offers numerous photo spots with the peaks of the Latemar mountain group towering in the background.

The forests around the lake are extremely varied: spruces, silver firs, and red pines alternate, among which numerous rare plant and animal species live. The Carezza ski area near the lake provides excellent skiing opportunities in winter, while in summer you can hike around the Latemar group.

Lago di Braies

Commonly known as „Pragser Wildsee”, it is the Dolomites’ largest natural lake and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful sights in the mountain range.

The 31-hectare lake at 1,496 meters altitude perfectly reflects the surrounding Seekofel (2,810 m) and Croda del Becco (2,810 m) peaks in its emerald green water surface. The lake’s special color is due to limestone dissolved in the water and light reflection, which creates different shades on the water surface at different times of day.

The 3.5-kilometer walking path around the lake offers a breathtaking experience in every season: in spring the lakeside meadows are full of wildflowers, in summer the forests provide cool shade, in autumn the colorful foliage of deciduous trees reflects in the water, and in winter the frozen lake and snow-covered surroundings create a fairytale atmosphere. At the southern end of the lake is the Pragser Wildsee Hotel, which was already a favorite resort of the monarchy’s aristocracy at the end of the 19th century.

Several hiking trails start from around the lake toward the surrounding peaks: the Dürrenstein viewpoint can be reached with a 2.5-hour hike, while experienced hikers can undertake climbing Seekofel. Boating is also available at the lake, though this can only be used during summer months.

Lago di Misurina

Lake Misurina lies at 1,754 meters altitude and is rightfully called the „Mirror of the Dolomites” as the surrounding peaks are perfectly reflected in its crystal-clear water: the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the Cristallo group, and the rock towers of Cadini di Misurina.

The 15-hectare lake is of natural origin, and its special microclimate is considered healing: the allergology institute has been receiving patients suffering from respiratory diseases for decades.

The 2.6-kilometer walking path around the lake is an easy, family-friendly hike, during which we can admire the panorama of the surrounding mountains. The Grand Hotel Misurina on the northern shore of the lake has historical significance: several famous personalities stayed here, and the hotel itself is part of the lake’s romantic atmosphere. In winter it freezes completely and is also suitable for ice skating.

Lago di Sorapis

Lake Sorapis is perhaps the most uniquely colored lake in the Dolomites: its water is intense turquoise blue, creating an almost surreal effect among the gray rocks.

The lake’s special color is due to rock flour suspended in the water, which comes from the erosive activity of surrounding glaciers. Despite the lake’s small size, it is deep, and the water temperature remains very low even in summer.

The lake at 1,923 meters altitude lies at the foot of the Sorapis group and can only be reached on foot during an approximately 3-hour hike from Misurina. The hiking trail initially passes through forested areas, then leads to increasingly rocky terrain before reaching the lake’s wild romantic environment.

Access to the lake is made difficult by the fact that the last section of the route is equipped with safety ropes, so basic mountaineering experience is required. During the hike, there’s an unparalleled view of the Cristallo group and the distant Tre Cime di Lavaredo peaks. The Sorapis lake area is particularly popular among nature photographers.

Most beautiful settlements in the Dolomites

Bolzano

The capital of South Tyrol serves as the gateway to the Dolomites, where Austrian and Italian cultures blend.

The city’s special beauty comes from being located at the confluence of three valleys: the Adige, Isarco, and Talvera valleys embrace it, while the outlines of peaks are already visible in the distance. The city’s cable car, the Funivia, quickly takes you up to the Renon plateau, from where there’s a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding mountains.

Its main attraction is the Ötzi Museum, where the 5,300-year-old ice mummy and his complete equipment can be seen, representing one of the most important archaeological finds of human civilization. Ortisei (St. Ulrich)

The capital of the Gardena Valley considers itself one of the most important centers of Ladin culture, where trilingual daily life in German, Italian, and Ladin is still a living tradition. The settlement’s special charm comes from being located in a narrow valley basin, surrounded by the breathtaking panorama of Seceda, Rasciesa, and Alpe di Siusi.

The city is world-famous for its wood carving tradition, which has been practiced here since the 17th century. The works of Gardena Valley wood carvers can be found all over the world, especially among religious-themed sculptures. In Ortisei’s pedestrian street, numerous wood carving workshops and galleries can be found, where you can buy these unique creations directly from the masters.

The Seceda cable car starts directly from the center and takes you up to one of the most beautiful viewpoints in just a few minutes. In winter, Ortisei is part of the Dolomiti Superski area, and in summer it’s the starting point for numerous hiking trails.

San Candido (Innichen)

Located at the eastern end of the Pusteria Valley, it is rightfully considered one of the most authentic settlements in the Dolomites, where the atmosphere of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy can still be felt today.

The city is in a unique geographical position: it simultaneously serves as a passage to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo World Heritage site and as a gateway toward the Austrian border. San Candido’s special beauty is given by the surrounding mountains: from the north the Haunold, and from the south the famous Drei Zinnen (Tre Cime) peaks border it.

Its main attraction is the Collegiate Church from the 12th century, which is one of South Tyrol’s most significant Romanesque churches. The church’s specialty is the 13th-century fresco cycle depicting the life of Christ, which is one of Europe’s most intact medieval painting monuments.

San Candido is an excellent starting point for discovering the surrounding natural wonders. Near the city is the Wildbad Innichen wellness center, which attracts visitors with its natural hot springs. Selva di Val Gardena (Wolkenstein)

Located as the uppermost settlement of the Gardena Valley, directly at the foot of the Sella massif and Sassolungo, making it one of the most spectacular locations in the Dolomites.

The village’s special beauty comes from being almost completely surrounded by the Dolomite peaks that are part of the World Heritage, with breathtaking mountain panoramas in every direction. Selva is the highest of the three settlements in Val Gardena, making it particularly attractive for skiers in winter.

The difficulty level of the hike is exceptional; in several sections, hikers must navigate narrow, slippery paths and steep cliff faces, with drops of several hundred meters below. The most dangerous part of the route is the section called „Crawler’s Ledge” where the footpath is only a few centimeters wide and runs along the side of the cliff. A permit is required for the full trail, and at least one night must be spent in the wilderness, but the first two miles – leading to Hanakapi’ai Beach – can be hiked without a permit.

Jameos del Agua

Located in the northern part of the island, this is one of César Manrique’s famous architectural and artistic works.

It’s part of a 6-kilometer-long volcanic tunnel system created by the eruption of the La Corona volcano approximately 4,000 years ago. The term „jameo” in Spanish refers to the open areas created by the collapse of the cave ceiling.

Inside the cave is a crystal-clear saltwater lake fed by seawater. The lake’s special feature is the albino cave crabs (Munidopsis polymorpha) that live here. These tiny, white creatures are found exclusively in this location.

Cueva de los Verdes

Part of a several-kilometer-long volcanic tunnel system created by the La Corona volcano’s eruption approximately 4,000 years ago.

The cave was formed when the outer layer of hot lava flowing from the volcano solidified while the inner, still liquid lava continued to flow, leaving behind a cavity. Over time, this tunnel has developed fascinating geological formations and colors.

One of its most unique features is an underground lake that creates an optical illusion. The water surface perfectly reflects the surroundings, creating an interesting atmosphere that often deceives visitors.

Charco de los Clicos

The Green Lagoon, this special lake is located in the southwestern part of the island, near the village of El Golfo.

It’s the remnant of an old volcanic crater that partially connects to the Atlantic Ocean. Ocean waves and volcanic activity together created this unique natural formation. The lake’s vivid green color is due to microscopic algae that thrive in high-salt environments.

Visitors cannot go down to the lakeshore. From the nearby parking lot, a designated path leads to a point offering beautiful views.

Mirador del Río

La Geria

In this small area, we can see Lanzarote’s traditional wine cultivation.

The wine region’s uniqueness comes from growing grapes in volcanic soil. The area is covered with black volcanic ash, which provides ideal nutrients for the vines. Castillo de Santa Bárbara

One of Lanzarote’s oldest and most significant fortifications, located at the top of the volcanic Guanapay mountain near the town of Teguise.

Construction began in the 16th century when Lanzarote became a frequent target of pirate attacks. The first parts of the fortress were built by Sancho de Herrera, then ruler of Lanzarote, to provide protection for the island’s inhabitants. Its biggest attraction is the USS Missouri battleship. The USS Missouri (BB 63) was a legendary battleship of the US Navy, participating in numerous battles during World War II. On September 2, 1945, Japan’s surrender was signed on this ship’s deck. It participated in the Korean War and the 1991 Gulf War. It was retired in 1995 and has been operating as a museum since 1998.

Another main attraction is the USS Arizona National Memorial. Built over the wreckage of the USS Arizona battleship, this memorial commemorates the 1,777 sailors who lost their lives here on December 7, 1941. The massive ship was swallowed by the waves in just nine minutes.

The Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum‘s two hangars display various aircraft, and videos and historical photographs showcase the past.

The USS Bowfin Submarine Museum can be viewed at the visitor center (before the bridge to the island). It patrolled between Indonesia and Japan during World War II and sank 15 merchant ships and a frigate. It has been a state memorial since 1986.

Diamond Head State Monument

This volcanic crater rises at the southeastern part of Honolulu. It offers the best photos of Honolulu and the long beach area.

Known locally as Leahi, it was formed about 300,000 years ago during a volcanic eruption. The crater is nearly 1 kilometer in diameter and 230 meters high. A military base operated here in the 20th century, and its remains are still visible today.

The Diamond Head trail is one of the most popular on Oahu, leading to the crater’s rim. The approximately 1.3 km long route is moderately difficult, so it’s safe to attempt. The views are amazing even during the hike.

Shangri La Museum (Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design)

This small museum is located at the southeastern foot of Diamond Head, on the beach. It’s worth visiting for those interested in Islamic culture.

The collection consists mainly of ceramic art, particularly tile works and medieval Persian creations. Notable are the works created by Moroccan, Indian, and Iranian artists in the 1930s.

Lyon Arboretum and Manoa Falls

Several hiking trails start into the lush forest area a few kilometers from Honolulu. Among these, the Manoa Falls Trail is perhaps the most beautiful.

You can drive to Lyon Arboretum, where you can see many species of plants and animals. It contains more than 5,000 tropical plants from Hawaii and Polynesia.

From here, about a 1 km walk takes you to Manoa Falls. You can swim in the pool at the bottom of the 150-meter waterfall.

Hanauma Bay

On the southeastern part of Oahu, this unique natural bay formed in an ancient volcanic crater.

It’s in a beautiful environment and perfect for snorkeling and diving due to its rich marine life. Besides numerous fish species, it’s an important habitat for green sea turtles, which visitors often see.

Since the bay is heavily protected, visitors must attend a short education session before entering. There are no refreshment stands on the beach; you can only shop in the parking lot.

Koko Crater Railway Trailhead

This is a hiking trail where railway ties serve as steps, with most of the track still in place.

During World War II, a military tram operated here, as there were bunkers at the summit. Supplies were transported on this.

Although it’s only 1.2 km long, you need to climb stairs made of 1,050 railway ties, so some endurance is needed! However, the summit offers beautiful panoramic views.

Lanikai Beach

Located in southern Kailua, many consider this Oahu’s most beautiful beach.

This is the beach people come to Hawaii for: azure water and dazzling fine sand. Plus, the wind is lighter here, so waves are smaller than at other Hawaiian beaches.

Polynesian Cultural Center

Located in the coastal town of Laie below the northern „tip”, this park was founded by the Mormon church.

The experience center spans over 42 hectares and aims to introduce visitors to the traditions, history, and culture of various Polynesian islands (e.g., Hawaii, Fiji, Tahiti, Samoa, Tonga, and New Zealand).

It consists of seven different „villages”, each showcasing a Polynesian archipelago. One of its best performances is Hā Breath of Life, a Polynesian music and dance show.

Valley of the Temples

A memorial park located near the city of Kāneʻohe at the foot of the Koʻolau Mountains.

Its most famous building is the Byodo Temple complex, a replica of an ancient Japanese Buddhist temple. It’s surrounded by lotus flowers, koi ponds, and beautiful Japanese-style gardens. The temple houses a huge golden Buddha statue sitting in meditation position.

Additionally, the grounds contain statues of Catholic saints, crypts, and mausoleums of notable Hawaiian people.

Waimea Valley Park

This beautiful park is located on the border of Pupukea settlement.

It features a very beautiful hiking trail, rich, varied landscape, and tropical vegetation. More than 5,000 plant species can be seen, including rare and native Hawaiian plants.

After about a 1.5 km walk, you can take a dip in a small pond with a small waterfall.

One of the park’s biggest attractions is Waimea Falls, which is about 14 meters high. The path leading here is well-maintained, requiring a pleasant 1.5-kilometer walk. There’s a natural pool at the foot of the waterfall where swimming is allowed.

Waimea Bay

This is one of Oahu’s most popular beaches, especially among surfers.

Known for its huge winter waves, it attracts professional surfers from around the world. Waves can reach 10-15 meters during this time.

In summer, however, its calm, clear water is ideal for swimming and diving.

Ha’ikū Stairs

Also known as the Stairway to Heaven, it’s a legendary high-altitude hiking trail. It runs across Oahu’s Ko’olau mountain range for a total of 3,922 steps.

The „Haiku” in its name doesn’t refer to the Japanese poetry form but to the area it crosses, known as „Haʻikū” after the Kahili flower that blooms here.

It’s an extremely challenging hiking trail in an impressive environment, with a total of 4,000 steps leading up to the 850-meter high Puu Keahi a Kahoe peak and winding back to sea level.

Unfortunately, using the trail is prohibited, with hefty fines for caught hikers.

Kualoa Ranch

Located on Oahu’s eastern shore, it’s one of the most popular tourist destinations.

It’s most famous for being a filming location for numerous Hollywood movies and TV series. Episodes of Jurassic Park, Godzilla, Jumanji, and Hawaii Five-0 were filmed here. Ranch visitors often encounter celebrities during filming.

The ranch offers numerous recreational activities: horseback riding, off-road tours, aerial tours, and zip lines.

Weather

The Hawaiian Islands have a pleasant tropical climate. There are two seasons: the dry season from May to October, and the rainy season from October to April.

The Pacific Ocean has a moderating effect on the islands’ annual average temperature. The winter average temperature is around 22-24°C, while the summer average temperature is usually above 28°C.

Rainfall distribution is affected by the location of the islands’ high mountains and the northeastern direction of the Pacific trade winds. The western and southern sides of the islands are wind-sheltered, with annual rainfall of 500-1000mm. Rain can freely reach the northern and eastern sides, where annual rainfall is 3000-4000mm.

The island is one of Spain’s main tourist destinations and the site of one of the world’s largest carnivals. Distant travelers are fascinated by the island’s duality: the massive, dark mountains and sandy beaches. Together with neighbouring Gran Canaria, it is one of the most popular Spanish destinations.

Tenerife attractions

Teide

Tenerife’s largest natural attraction is this 3,718-meter-high mountain, visible from almost everywhere as it sits in the center of the island. Although it’s an active volcano, it last erupted in 1909.

The Earth’s 3rd largest volcano can be approached on foot and by cable car (with a bit of walking), but a permit is required. The Teleférico del Teide cable car starts from an altitude of 2,356 meters and goes up to 3,555 meters.

The highest parking lot below the peak (about 2,200 meters high) can be reached by main road from both north and south. From here, you can hike up to the Altavista refuge. The altitude and the sulfurous smell from the volcano make climbing difficult, so make sure you’re in good physical condition before attempting it!

Puerto de la Cruz

What makes this city worth choosing is its typical Spanish atmosphere. It’s also a good starting point for climbing Teide, with a beautiful winding road leading to the base of the mountain.

Although it’s a well-developed resort town, its architecture, culture, and food have retained the Tenerife style. All this is reflected in the palm-lined seafront promenade, shopping streets, and old churches.

Its most famous attraction is Loro Parque, a world-renowned zoo and amusement park, especially known for its parrot collection.

Another popular site is Lago Martiánez, a unique, man-made lagoon complex designed by the famous Spanish architect César Manrique. Here, swimming pools, palm trees, and decorations made of volcanic rock create a unique environment on the beach.

El Sauzal

This small town is located between Puerto de la Cruz and the northern airport, along the main road, and it’s definitely worth stopping!

The town is also known as a continuous viewpoint, as there’s a beautiful panorama from almost everywhere.

Icod de los Vinos

This small town is home to the world’s largest dragon tree, which only grows on a few tropical islands. This specimen is over 500 years old.

It’s worth taking a short walk in the town; the Plaza de La Pila is considered the most beautiful square on the island.

The world’s largest volcanic cave, the Cave of the Winds (Cueva del Viento), is also located here. Underground labyrinth passages on three levels form it, where visitors can admire the cave’s geomorphological beauty. According to speleologists, at 18 kilometers long, it’s one of the largest in the world. Tickets and opening hours can be found here.

Garachico

It’s worth stopping in this village between Puerto de la Cruz and Masca.

The village was destroyed by a volcano in 1706, creating interesting pools on the shore that were occupied by water. The rocks between the pools have been paved, so you can walk among them.

Los Gigantes

One of Tenerife’s spectacular natural wonders is located on the west coast.

The impressive cliffs, from which the city gets its name, are 500-800 meters high and descend steeply into the Atlantic Ocean.

The city has a small, volcanic sand beach called Playa de los Guios. Due to the proximity of the cliffs, the beach is particularly protected from larger waves.

Masca

The former pirate village nestles among the steep rocks of the Teno Mountains and is a must-see attraction.

The village was once a secluded, hard-to-reach mountain settlement; an asphalt road was only built to it in the 1970s. Thus, it has preserved the old style quite well.

It’s interesting not only because of the village itself but also because of the road leading there! A steep serpentine road with many turns leads there, and two cars can barely fit side by side. Because of this, I recommend taking a bus from Santiago del Teide so you can enjoy the scenery all the way.

From the village, an approximately 8 km hiking trail leads through a gorge to the seaside. It’s a difficult hike and there’s a fee. You can book a time slot online here.

Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos

These two neighboring cities in the south are the island’s holiday center. It’s a real resort area with many hotels, apartments, and entertainment options.

Its best beach is Playa de Las Vistas, with promenades lined with all kinds of shops and restaurants.

If you want a passive holiday, this is the place to come, as there are several excursion options in the area that you can do with children as well.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The capital of Tenerife is extremely charming, and it’s worth taking a look around if you’re in the northern part!

However, it’s best known for its carnival, which is the world’s 2nd largest such event after Rio. The street parade is the main element of the carnival, during which the city’s population pours into the streets and celebrates in carnival costumes with music and dance.

Take a walk on Rambla de Santa Cruz street, which with its huge trees, seating areas, cafes, and shops is a favorite of both locals and tourists.

Next to the Rambla is the city’s bullfighting arena. Since bullfights were banned years ago, the arena is now mainly used for concerts and other performances.

Playa de las Teresitas

The most beautiful beach in the northern part is located a few kilometers from the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

It’s a golden sand beach, as the shore was filled with Saharan sand back in the 1970s. The bay is surrounded by mountains, so the view from the water is fantastic. On a clear day, you can see Teide in the distance.

The beach is protected by an artificial reef, so the water is usually calm and wave-free, which is ideal for young children. Palm trees and tropical plants line the beach, giving you a Caribbean feel.

The most beautiful view of the beach is from the road running along the hillside (Mirador Las Teresitas). If you’re driving, definitely go up here because the view is wonderful.

Anaga National Park

When I was in the southern part and checked out of my accommodation, the receptionist insisted that I shouldn’t miss Anaga in the northern part. This is a large forested area with huge laurel forests and valleys cut through it.

I can only recommend that you drive from the capital or San Andres (from Teresitas beach) to the Cruz del Carmen visitor center, from where you can take short and long hikes to the surrounding areas. You won’t be disappointed by the sometimes eerie hiking trails among the laurel trees!

Turning off Route 12 towards Benijo, we find several beaches on the coast, but be prepared for colder water than in the south and more frequent winds. However, we’re greeted with a great view from below.

Beaches in Bali

If you’re looking for dazzling white sandy beaches, Bali might not be the place. Many beaches here have black volcanic sand. However, neighboring islands like the Gili Islands offer more picturesque beaches, accessible by a short boat ride.

Tidal changes are significant in Bali, affecting the beach’s appearance.

Kuta

It is the most famous beach area, known more for its nightlife and restaurants than the beach itself. It’s also a surfer’s paradise due to large waves.

Legian Beach

North of Kuta, it is similar but slightly quieter.

Seminyak Beach

Further north, Seminyak is well-developed with a wide, shallow shoreline and the quietest among Kuta’s beaches.

Sanur

On the opposite side of Kuta, Sanur offers calmer waters, shallower beaches, and a 5 km bike path.

Nusa Dua

In the south, it is known for its golden sand and upscale resorts but lacks authentic Balinese ambiance.

Pantai Samuh

Near Nusa Dua, it is also well-developed with restaurants, water sports, and bars.

Jimbaran Beach

South of the airport, it is popular for its long, wide, and beautiful shoreline lined with hotels and restaurants.

Suluban Beach

Near Uluwatu Temple, it offers stunning views from atop a cliff, accessed via a long staircase, making it less crowded.

Lovina Beach

On the northern coast, it stands out for dolphin-watching tours.

Remember, Bali’s climate makes its beaches unique, with black sand and varying tidal conditions, offering a different beach experience than typical white-sand beaches.

Rice terraces

You might have seen pictures of massive, step-like rice fields. In Bali, you can see these in real life, as many locals live off rice farming.

Jatiluwih

The largest and most picturesque rice terrace, a World Heritage site. Especially if you go after the rain, when the water stays on the steps of the „terrace”, offering a spectacular view.

Tegallalang

Another famous rice terrace is Tegallalang, where you can walk among the terraces and watch the rice farmers at work, enhanced by the beauty of palm trees.

Temples

Bali is home to thousands of temples.

Tanah Lot

This rock temple is one of the most famous, revered as one of the holiest by Balinese people.

Situated on a small rock, it’s only accessible during low tide, surrounded by water during high tide. Built in the 17th century, it’s dedicated to Baruna, the sea god.

Uluwatu

Another significant rock temple, located on the southern part of the island atop a high cliff.

Those not practicing the local religion are not permitted inside, but it’s still worth visiting, especially for its breathtaking sunset views.

Taman Ayun

The Royal Family Temple is renowned for its unique location on a small island-like area surrounded by a moat.

It consists of three courtyards, a rarity in the world. The architecture is a fascinating mix of Balinese and Chinese styles.

Ulun Danu

Located in the north on the shores of Lake Beratan, this temple is dedicated to the water goddess, Danu.

It’s also a pilgrimage site for Indonesian couples seeking fertility blessings. During high tide, it becomes inaccessible, surrounded by the lake’s water, making boat rides around the temple popular.

Besakih Temple

In the northeastern part, at the foot of Mount Agung, lies Bali’s largest temple complex, the Besakih Temple. It comprises three main and 19 secondary temples, accessible via winding paths.

Pura Lempuyang Temple

One of Bali’s most iconic, requiring a climb of nearly 1700 steps to the top of Seraya Mountain.

The complex includes seven temples, offering stunning views of Mount Agung. Its famous gateway is often referred to as the „gateway to heaven”.

Goa Gajah

Known as the Elephant Cave Temple, it’s unique for its carved elephant head above the entrance.

The cave is man-made, and legends say if you listen closely, you might hear the voice of the goddess Shiva. Worth trying, but don’t keep high hopes.

Waterfalls

The „jungle” environment of Bali is home to numerous waterfalls, making it hard to choose the most beautiful.

Tegenungan

One of the most touristy waterfalls, located near the southern part of Bali, making it very popular. At the top of the waterfall, sitting on the rocks, you can dangle your feet for a fantastic view.

Kroya

At Kroya waterfall, you can actually slide down! The waterfall isn’t big, but the water cascades down a slide-like section, allowing for a fun descent.

Gitgit

Located in the north, near the Ulun Danu temple, a short walk is required to see this waterfall curtain.

Sekumpul

A name familiar to many, Sekumpul is close to Gitgit, and within a few hundred meters, you can find many smaller waterfalls.

It’s worth taking a stroll to see a few of them! Nearby is the Fiji rice terrace, a must-see for many visitors.

Banyumula

Located north of Lake Buyan, easily accessible by car, followed by about a 10-minute walk to reach this beautiful waterfall. You can swim in its crystal-clear waters.

Kanto Lampo

Close to the south, near Ubud, Kanto Lampo is a great option for those not visiting the northern part of Bali. You can stand in the middle of the waterfall and enjoy the cascading water.

Cepung Waterfall

Located between Ubud and Lake Batur, best visited in the morning when sunlight breaking into the cave creates a magnificent sight.

Next to Denpasar, Ubud is the second most important town.

Located in the heart of Bali, surrounded by jungle-covered hills, it’s the island’s most atmospheric place, a cultural and artistic hub, and a center for traditional crafts. The local market is a must-visit.

Gedong Arca Purbakala

For those interested in museums and archeology, this museum is filled with stone and bronze age jewelry and artifacts.

Its most interesting items are over 50 various-sized sarcophagi, estimated to be about 1200 years old.

Monkey Forest

Near Ubud, home to numerous macaques. The monkeys are accustomed to humans, so don’t be surprised if they snatch food from your hand.

Tirta Gangga

The royal water palace is fed by sacred water (tirta) from surrounding hills.

Not only the pools and fountains but also the experience of walking on water (via stepping stones) is unique.

Penglipuran

An ancient village preserving centuries-old architectural traditions. Most buildings are made of bamboo, showcasing its diverse use.

Visitors can glimpse into the daily life of locals, and are often invited to eat at their homes!

Batur Volcano

For hiking enthusiasts, Batur offers an exciting trek. The highest point of the crater is 1,717 meters, offering fantastic views.

On clear days, you can even see Mount Rinjani on neighboring Lombok Island.

Handara Gate

Located between Lake Bratan and Lake Buyan, this gateway of a golf club is one of the most photographed sites on the island. It’s a must-visit on a northern tour, especially if self-organized.

Diving and snorkeling

US Liberty Wreck Ship

In the northeast, near Tulamben, this WWII shipwreck is a prime diving site. Damaged in the war, it was pushed into the sea by the 1963 eruption of Mount Agung. The unique marine life here is due to the grey volcanic sand. Estimates suggest 1,400 species live in this small bay.

Japanese Shipwreck

Located in Banyuning village, this wreck is accessible for snorkelers due to its shallow location. The beauty lies not in the wreck itself but in the stunning corals that have grown over it.

Padang Bai

A well-known diving spot on the eastern coast, also a departure point for boats to Lombok.

Nusa Lembongan

East of Denpasar, this island is accessible by daily boats from Sanur in just half an hour. You can quickly tour the island by scooter or motorbike.

Lembongan Beach

The central part of the island, featuring a developed white sandy beach. Great for diving and snorkeling.

Dream Beach

Located in the south, it offers unbeatable views and is an ideal spot to watch the sunset.

Mangrove Bay

A quiet beach bordered by a mangrove forest. Nearby stalls offer refreshing coconut water.

Local specialty: Kopi Luwak

One of the world’s most expensive coffees. Kopi Luwak is strong, but its production makes it unique.

A civet cat living in trees loves coffee cherries and eats only the finest. The cherries pass through its digestive system, undergoing chemical processes. These are then collected from the feces, cleaned, and processed like regular coffee.

Reportedly, those who drink a cup of luwak coffee will feel energized for hours. Worth a try!

Weather in Bali

Bali has a monsoon climate with two seasons: the dry season from June to November and the rainy season from December to May.

During the dry season, expect little rainfall, warm, dry, sunny weather, and pleasant breezes, although winds may strengthen in July and August.

The rainy season brings more precipitation, particularly in the highlands. However, even during the rainy season, the southern part of the island – where most hotels are located – receives less rainfall.

Anse Intendance

Located in the southern part of Mahé, many consider it the most beautiful beach on the island. It features white sand and stunning turquoise water.

One drawback is that there is no reef, often resulting in strong waves. It is easily accessible by car, with available parking.

Grand Anse

Situated on the southwest coast of Mahé, it is only accessible after about a 15-minute walk. The beach has fine sand and is excellent for snorkeling as there are no currents.

Anse Royale

The most beautiful beach on Mahé Island, featuring granite rocks, white sand, and palm trees. The water is very pleasant and shallow.

Baie Lazare

An easily accessible beach on Mahé, located right next to the main road.

The water is shallow, making it unsuitable for swimming and snorkeling, but the white sandy beach is excellent for relaxation.

Anse Volbert (Côte D’Or Beach)

One of the most popular beaches on Praslin. Unlike the others, it has several hotels and restaurants.

Anse Lazio

Located in the northeast of Praslin Island, many consider it the most beautiful beach in the world.

It is in a bay, with beautiful granite rocks emerging from the sand on the northern side. The water colors are stunning, and palm trees lean over the water. The sand is white and very pleasant.

It is worth waiting for the sunset as Anse Lazio is perhaps most beautiful at this time.

Anse Georgette

Not far from Anse Lazio, found in a small bay. Many consider it even more beautiful than Anse Lazio. The view of the beach from above is stunning.

Be cautious as the water deepens quickly. The sea is wavier here as there is no reef, which might be the only downside. The sand is very fine and dazzlingly white.

Access is a bit challenging as the route goes through the Lemuria Resort. Prior registration is required, but entry is free. Register at the reception, and from there, it’s about a 20-minute walk to the beach.

Anse Source D’Argent

Located on La Digue Island, it is one of the most photographed beaches in the world. Massive granite rocks rise from the white sand, shaped by the forces of nature. The water is shallow due to the reef.

The beach is part of the L’Union Estate Park, and an entrance fee is required, but the view is well worth it!

Grande Anse

One of the most beautiful white sandy beaches on La Digue Island. Be prepared for often strong waves.

Huge granite rocks at both ends of the bay make the beach picturesque.

Petite Anse

A beautiful beach located a 10-minute walk from Grande Anse. To reach it, you must cross large rocks and vegetation via a small trodden path.

The view during the walk is fantastic, with white sand and turquoise water awaiting those who walk here.

Anse Marron

This small beach is located at the southern tip of La Digue. It is challenging to reach, often requiring a route over granite rocks from Grand Anse.

Mahé attractions

Victoria

The capital of Seychelles, with a population of about 25,000, is among the smallest capitals in the world. Due to its short history, there are few attractions.

One of the most famous landmarks is the clock tower, erected in 1903, modeled after London’s Big Ben.

The Arul Mihu Navasakthi Vinayagar is a beautiful Hindu temple, the only one of its kind in the country.

Be sure to visit the Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market! Although it’s not a large market and you may encounter some unusual smells, it’s an authentic place. You can buy fish, fruits, clothes, coconut products, and even handmade crafts.

The Botanical Garden is located 1 km from the clock tower. Its most famous plant is the coco de mer palm. There are also some giant tortoises in the garden.

Beau Vallon

Just a few kilometers west of the capital is one of the popular holiday destinations. The mountains in the background make the scenery even more beautiful.

It has a lovely white sandy beach where water sports and even a diving school are available. It’s an ideal place for families, as the water is shallow and free of rocks.

Domaine de Val des Prés

A village showcasing Creole life and crafts. You can get acquainted with local architectural styles, arts, and craftsmanship.

There are also spectacular shops, and you can buy products from local artisans.

Tea Factory

This manufactory, located in a very picturesque area, demonstrates tea cultivation and processing in Seychelles. It offers one of the island’s most beautiful panoramas.

Kot Ma-Ya Exotic Flower Garden

A paradise for plant lovers. Besides more than two hundred species of tropical plants and orchids, the garden also houses tortoises, frogs, geckos, and rabbits.

Jardin Du Roi Spice Garden

The garden features numerous plants and fruits, such as vanilla, cinnamon, and pineapple. You can see the spices in their growing form. There is a beautiful view of Anse Royale from here.

Kreolfleurage Parfums

This small laboratory is located in the northern tip of the island. It is the only perfume manufactory in the Indian Ocean region.

They use local oils and essences to create unique perfumes, which are available for purchase.

Morne Seychellois National Park

The largest national park in Seychelles. The highest point is also here, with Morne Seychellois at 905 meters.

There are several hiking trails.

The Trois Freres Peak Trail is the most popular. It’s only 800 meters long with a 200-meter elevation gain, but along the way, you will encounter exotic spices and stunning panoramas.

The Dans Gallas Nature Trail is longer, at 2 km with a 310-meter elevation gain. This trail offers a beautiful view of Beau Vallon Bay. It’s easily accessible from Victoria.

In the northwestern part of the park, along the coast, is the Anse Major Nature Trail. After about 2.5 km, you reach a beautiful beach, Anse Major. Due to its access route, it’s a quiet beach.

Bazar Labrin

A musical and dance-filled Creole celebration held every Wednesday in Beau Vallon. You can taste many local specialties: Creole coconut cake, carrot cake, octopus curry, and grilled fish.

Praslin Island attractions

Vallée De Mai National Park

This is the only place where the endangered Coco de Mer palm can be found in such abundance (there are over 4,000 specimens). The sea coconut is a symbol of the Seychelles. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and an entrance fee is required.

This palm produces the world’s largest seed, with the fruit of the several hundred-year-old trees weighing up to 18 kilograms. Additionally, many animal species can be found here, such as the Seychelles bulbul.

There are three hiking trails in the national park. Along the way, informational signs provide descriptions of important species.

Cousin Island

Located 2 km west of Praslin Island, this small island has been a nature reserve for over 50 years. It can only be visited with local tour operators.

It is home to rare species such as the hawksbill turtle, Seychelles magpie-robin, Seychelles warbler, and more.

Curieuse Island

This island is just 1 km from Praslin.

Its most famous attraction is the tortoise farm. Here, tortoises live freely and are well cared for. They are very gentle and can be fed and petted.

The most beautiful beach is Anse St. Jose, a long, wide shore that is also an excellent snorkeling spot.

Near this beach is the Doctor’s House, which was once a leper colony. A museum about the history of the disease and the doctor who studied leprosy operates in this house.

La Digue attractions

L’Union Estate

An information center and park, formerly a coconut plantation, which can be visited for a fee.

It demonstrates the process of making coconut oil. Additionally, there is a huge 750-million-year-old granite rock shaped by the forces of nature into various forms.

Nid d’Aigle

The highest point on the island, at 333 meters. It offers a very beautiful view of the island.

Weather

The annual average temperature is 27°C, with 80% humidity. Due to tropical rains, the annual precipitation is 2300 mm (in Hungary, it is 500-900 mm).

From April to October, the southeast trade winds provide cooler and drier weather.

The milder northwest monsoon system reaches the Seychelles around Christmas, bringing precipitation and causing downpours. Showers and thunderstorms can occur on any day of the year.

Despite being small islands in the vast Indian Ocean, numerous microclimates have developed. This diversity makes the climate of the Seychelles unique – it may rain on one beach, be sunny on another, and fog may descend on the mountains.

Galápagos Islands overview

Located near the Equator in the Pacific Ocean, the Galápagos Islands consist of 14 larger islands, 6 smaller ones, and over a hundred rocks.

Formed by volcanic and tectonic forces, the islands have diverse ecosystems, and each island differs from the others.

Known as a living museum of evolution, the islands are home to endemic species found nowhere else.

Charles Darwin studied the islands’ wildlife for several weeks, and in his honor, a small island in the northwestern part of the archipelago is named after him.

Situated west of South America, the islands legally belong to Ecuador. The capital is Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristóbal Island. Galápagos is part of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites.

It’s important to know that upon arrival at the airport, a fee of $100 is required for entering the national park, payable in cash.

The number of visitors is limited per island, and inter-island boat travel is also restricted to prevent overcrowding and excessive stress on the wildlife.

Only two airlines operate flights to the islands from Quito and Guayaquil. Unfortunately, prices are higher due to the monopoly. Travel by boat is possible but takes several days.

The best time to visit is between December and May, when there’s plenty of sunshine and the sea temperature is suitable for swimming. Besides the natural attractions, the most famous animal species include:

• Galápagos giant tortoises or elephant tortoises;
• Darwin’s finches;
• Galápagos fur seals;
• Blue-footed boobies;
• Iguanas.

Visiting is an exceptional experience as the animals are not very afraid of humans, allowing for close observation. Reports often mention, for example, iguanas casually wandering around people’s feet.

A few of the Islands

San Cristóbal

La Loberia beach, just south of the capital, is an accessible observation spot for giant tortoises and sea lions.

Another popular beach is Playa Punta Carola, near Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the capital of the Galápagos province.

Santa Cruz

Puerto Ayora, a port city in the south, is the hub, and the Charles Darwin Research Station nearby showcases the archipelago’s wildlife. Sea iguanas and sea lions can also be seen on the city’s beaches.

Isabela

One of the most beautiful islands, formed by six volcanoes.

Its center, the quaint Puerto Villamil in the south, has a long, sandy beach frequented by iguanas. Near the town is the Arnaldo Tupiza giant tortoise sanctuary, housing hundreds of tortoises.

A short hike takes visitors to the Wall of Tears, a reminder that the islands served as a penal colony before 1960.

The nearby active Sierra Negra volcano offers hikes to its crater. Cerro Brujo’s white sandy beach is a haven for blue-footed boobies.

Rabida

A small island south of Isla Santiago, famous for its red beaches, resulting from the oxidation of iron-rich lava and washed-out sea coral sediments.

Bartolomé

East of Santiago Island, it features the iconic Pinnacle Rock. The small island offers beautiful sandy beaches and a short walk to its highest point, offering stunning views.

Genovesa

Home to Darwin Bay and Arcturus crater lake, and also a spot to observe the red-footed booby.

Floreana

Known for green sea turtles and a popular spot for animal observation. Devil’s Crown is an excellent snorkeling site.

Scotland is the second largest part of the United Kingdom, located north of England. It has been part of Great Britain since 1707. Its history and natural features make it a unique country for visitors.

Best natural places, cities in Scotland

Edinburgh

Referred to as the „Athens of the North” the vibrant cultural life of the Scottish capital makes it an excellent choice for a few days’ visit.

If visiting in August, you can experience the Edinburgh Festival and The Fringe, the world’s largest arts festival.

Its most famous landmark is Edinburgh Castle, perched on a hill above the Old Town. Here, you’ll find the Scottish National War Museum and the coronation jewels.

To reach the castle, you’ll walk the renowned Royal Mile, flanked by fantastic historic buildings like St. Giles Cathedral.

At the other end of the Royal Mile is the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official residence of the Scottish Queen. When the Queen is not in residence, its historical apartments are open for viewing.

Edinburgh attractions

Glasgow

Scotland’s largest city is situated on the banks of the River Clyde. Just 80 km from Edinburgh, it’s a must-visit.

The city’s Celtic name translates to „green place”, hinting at the roughly 70 parks and green spaces in Glasgow.

One of its most famous buildings is the nearly 1000-year-old St. Mungo Cathedral. Nearby, you can explore the Necropolis, a Victorian cemetery with nearly 3500 memorials, including graves and mausoleums of the wealthy and leaders of that era.

In the West End, you’ll find the Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Scotland’s most visited attraction.

The botanical garden features a huge Victorian cast-iron greenhouse with a vast array of plants from around the world.

Glasgow attractions

St. Andrews

A small town on Scotland’s eastern coast (in Fife county), renowned for its tradition-rich university and as the birthplace of golf.

Here lies the unique St Andrews Links golf facility. In 1754, one of the first golf clubs, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, was established. The famous clubhouse is adjacent to the Old Course, one of the world’s most famous golf courses.

Outside the town are the ruins of the cathedral, built between the 13th and 16th centuries and destroyed during the Reformation by followers of John Knox. It’s presumed that relics of Apostle Andrew were placed here, leading to the incorporation of the St. Andrew’s Cross in the Scottish flag.

Glencoe Valley

A volcanic valley on the Scottish Highlands, a popular destination for hikers.

Tall peaks, misty valleys, and numerous streams make this landscape breathtaking. In summer, it’s a haven for hikers and climbers, while in winter, it attracts winter sports enthusiasts.

Also known as the „Valley of Tears” referencing the historical event of the 1692 Glencoe Massacre (where English soldiers killed 38 people).

Glenfinnan Viaduct

One of the most famous railway bridges in the world, popularized by the Harry Potter films.

This is where the scenes were shot where the Hogwarts Express passes through the landscape. This bridge has now become a cult attraction among fans, attracting thousands of tourists each year.

The viaduct consists of 21 arches, each 15 meters wide. The total length of the bridge is 380 meters, and it arches about 30 meters high over the Glenfinnan valley.

Cairngorms National Park

The United Kingdom’s largest national park, dominated by the Cairngorms mountain range.

Its central part is the Glenmore Forest Park, which also serves as a visitor center. Located on the shores of Loch Morlich, it’s an ideal starting point for a hike. From here, you can also reach the uppermost car park, where you can hike to the highest mountain peaks.

A visit to the Highland Wildlife Park is a must, where you can see various animal species, including tigers, wolves, and polar bears, living freely in a beautiful forested and hilly environment.

Don’t miss stopping in the charming town of Aviemore! From there, you can travel by steam train or taste excellent beers at the local brewery.

Aberdeen

Scotland’s third-largest city, it’s also the center of the northeastern region.

It boasts a long, sandy coastline, making it popular among tourists. These beaches extend north of the city for several kilometers.

The city also offers plenty of cultural attractions. The most popular is the Aberdeen Art Gallery, showcasing Victorian, Scottish, and 20th-century British paintings. Another notable institution is the Maritime Museum, which presents centuries of history with the North Sea.

Melrose Abbey

Located in the town of Melrose, its name symbolizes a combination of ‘mell’ (mason’s hammer) and ‘rose’ (a symbol of the Virgin Mary), to whom the Cistercians dedicated the abbey.

The abbey was founded by the Cistercian order under the command of King David I of Scotland in the early 12th century. It’s one of Britain’s most beautiful abbey ruins. Here lies the heart of King Robert I of Scotland.

Nearby are the Roman-era Trimontium fort and Dryburgh Abbey.

Mousa Broch

Part of the Shetland Islands, northeast of the mainland, Mousa Island hosts the best-preserved ancient building.

The double-walled tower (broch) is 12 meters high and 15 meters in diameter, likely built around 100 BC. The original staircase is still visible inside.

Loch Ness

Scotland’s most famous and second-largest lake, known primarily for the mythical monster said to inhabit it.

The legend has circulated for centuries, with the first known mention in Saint Columba’s legend from 565 AD.

In 1934, a photo depicting a long-necked monster emerging from the water was taken. Although later revealed as a hoax, the fame has since made the lake a popular attraction.

On its western side is Urquhart Castle, one of Scotland’s largest fortresses.

Lerwick

If you’re in the Shetland Islands, the region’s center is a must-visit! Those who have seen the crime series „Shetland” will recognize the town. 🙂

It’s home to one of the most famous festivals, Up Helly Aa. Costumed participants parade with torches, culminating in burning a Viking-like ship.

Isle of Skye

Located in the northwest of Scotland within the Hebrides archipelago, it’s considered one of the most beautiful areas.

The small island, with steep mountain ranges, cliffs plunging into the sea, and deep inlets, is rich in natural beauty.

Inhabited since the Mesolithic era, it has a history of Viking rule and was owned by the MacLeod and MacDonald clans.

The ancestral home of the MacLeod family, Dunvegan Castle, is also here.

Orkney Islands

A group of about 70 islands (around 20 inhabited), located 16 kilometers north of the Scottish mainland’s Caithness. The main island is called Mainland (Pomona).

For those who love stunning natural attractions, the coastal areas are a must-visit. The towering cliffs provide breathtaking scenery.

On the main island is the „Heart of Neolithic Orkney” part of the World Heritage Site. This group includes a large burial chamber (Maes Howe), two stone circles (the Stones of Stenness and the Ring of Brodgar), and the Skara Brae settlement.

The Ring of Brodgar, located on Bodgar Headland, predates Stonehenge and ancient Egyptian architectural wonders by thousands of years. Millennia ago, the Orkney Islands were the center of Britain.

Anstruther

This picturesque little fishing town is situated on the coast of the Firth of Forth.

The settlement is filled with beautiful, well-maintained old buildings, among which stands out the centuries-old St. Adrian’s Church. One of its most popular attractions is the Scottish Fisheries Museum, which presents the history of Scottish fishing through detailed exhibitions.

The town hosts numerous cultural and music events throughout the year, including the famous Anstruther Harbour Festival, which celebrates local traditions and the community with music, dances, and boat races.
