Lanna Traditions Museum

Precious Heritage Art Museum

French photographer Réhahn opened this unique gallery in 2017, documenting the culture of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic groups.

The artist spent more than a decade traveling remote mountainous regions to collect portraits and cultural artifacts to preserve disappearing traditions. On the museum’s three floors, more than 100 large-format photographs and several hundred authentic folk art objects can be viewed.

The collection includes traditional textiles, jewelry, musical instruments, and religious objects that the artist collected directly from communities, respecting their cultural significance. Particularly noteworthy is the collection of rare, hand-woven garments and headdresses, some of which are over 100 years old. The exhibition is organized chronologically and geographically, presenting the history and characteristics of each ethnic group in separate sections.

The 18-hectare complex consists of 40 different structures arranged in perfect symmetry, in accordance with Confucian principles and feng shui rules. The Dai Hong Mon triple-arched main gate is the entrance, which was opened only once: when the emperor’s coffin was brought in. The complex is adorned with lakes, bridges, and pavilions, while the central Minh Lau Pavilion consists of three terraces, symbolizing heaven, earth, and water.

The crescent-shaped Tan Nguyen island surrounding the tomb complex and the circularly placed Buu Thanh wall protect the emperor’s actual burial site, where the ruler’s earthly remains were interred. The area harmoniously blends natural and artificial landscapes: pine forests, lotus lakes, and imposing structures together create a breathtaking composition. Gia Long’s Tomb

The tomb complex covers approximately 67 hectares and is one of the least restored imperial tombs in Hue. This lends it a special authentic character: the jungle is slowly reclaiming the territory, many of the mausoleum’s structures are crumbling, overgrown with vegetation. The site is essentially divided into two parts: on one side rests Gia Long, on the other his first wife, Empress Tu Thuan.

The complex consists of lakes, pavilions, and ceremonial courtyards connected by footpaths. Due to its difficult accessibility and more abandoned nature, this tomb complex is less known among tourists, but for that very reason offers a special experience.

Tu Duc’s Tomb

The mausoleum built between 1864 and 1867 is the most poetic and beloved memorial among Nguyen emperors. Emperor Tu Duc (1848-1883) designed this incomparably beautiful complex himself, which also served as his favorite refuge during his lifetime.

The tomb complex consists of approximately 50 buildings, surrounded by a lake system, pine forests, and pavilions. On the shore of the central Luu Khiem Lake stands the Xung Khiem Pavilion, where the emperor recited poems and played chess with his favorites. The Minh Khiem royal theater is also visible here, with intricate carvings on its columns and sun, moon, and star representations on its ceiling.

The tomb area includes the Bi Dinh Pavilion, which houses Vietnam’s largest stele – weighing 20 tons. Tu Duc wrote his own epitaph on it, candidly acknowledging his mistakes during his reign. An interesting historical mystery surrounds the emperor’s actual burial place: his body was secretly interred, and all servants were executed so no one would know where he truly rests. Truong Tien Bridge

The 402.6-meter-long and 6-meter-wide bridge consists of six steel arches spanning the Perfume River, connecting Hue’s city center with the northern districts. Cham Da Nang Museum

One of Vietnam’s most significant museums showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Cham civilization.

The museum preserves more than 400 original Cham artworks, including sculptures, reliefs, and religious objects created between the 5th and 19th centuries. The exhibited pieces originate from the My Son Sanctuary and other Cham archaeological sites, representing irreplaceable treasures of South Asian art history. The collection is particularly rich in Hindu and Buddhist-inspired sculptures.

The museum building itself is of monument value, built in French colonial style. The museum makes historical learning experiential with interactive presentations and audiovisual materials.

Mikazuki Water Park

Da Nang’s newest and most modern water entertainment center, boasting Japanese technology and design elements.

The water park opened in 2018 offers more than 20 different water attractions, from adrenaline-pumping giant slides to family-friendly pools. One of the park’s most unique elements is the artificial wave pool that generates waves of different intensities every hour. A separate water playground is available for children in a safe environment with colorful water games and smaller slides.

The park’s design combines modern Japanese aesthetics with Vietnamese natural elements, creating a unique atmosphere. The water park operates year-round.

Golden Bridge

The viewing bridge is located not far from Da Nang in the Ba Na Hills and is a world-famous structure.

The 150-meter-long pedestrian bridge’s uniqueness lies in the giant stone hand sculptures that support it, as if a giant were lifting it into the air. The bridge is located at 1,400 meters altitude, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

You can reach it by cable car from Ba Na Hills, which is an unforgettable experience in itself. French-style buildings can be found around the bridge, evoking the atmosphere of the colonial era. Due to the bridge’s popularity, there is particularly heavy traffic on weekends and holidays, so it’s worth arriving early to take the best photos.

Hoi An

Located only 30 kilometers from Da Nang, this UNESCO World Heritage city is one of Vietnam’s best-preserved historic settlements.

Nicknamed the „City of Lanterns”, Hoi An is a former trading port city that flourished from the 15th to 19th centuries. The narrow streets of the old town are lined with yellow-walled, traditionally built houses decorated with colorful lanterns and flower-filled balconies. The settlement stretching along the Thu Bon River gets its special atmosphere from ancient temples, timber-framed houses, and French colonial buildings.

Hoi An is famous for its handicraft traditions, especially silk weaving and lantern making. Visitors can participate in craft workshops where they can learn these ancient crafts. In the evenings, the city swims in lantern light, and colorful lanterns float on the river, creating a magical atmosphere.

Hue

Vietnam’s former imperial capital is only two hours from Da Nang and preserves the magnificent heritage of the Nguyen Dynasty.

The city stretching along the banks of the Perfume River was the imperial seat from 1802 to 1945 and boasts historical monuments worthy of this status. The massive imperial citadel complex includes more than 100 buildings, including throne halls, temples, pavilions, and gardens. The UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most complete and impressive examples of Asian court culture.

Hue is not only historically significant but also stands out gastronomically compared to other regions of Vietnam. The refined food culture of the imperial court still lives on in the local cuisine, where visitors can taste bun bo Hue soup and other court specialties. My Son Sanctuary

Located about 70 kilometers from Da Nang, this ancient Cham religious center is one of Vietnam’s most important archaeological sites.

The sanctuary complex, which operated from the 4th to 14th centuries, was the center of Hindu religious life in the Cham kingdom. The temples and towers built of red brick served to worship the god Shiva and represent the most refined examples of Champa architecture. Although the complex suffered significant damage during the Vietnam War, the remaining ruins still provide an impressive sight today.

The Sanctuary consists of about 70 buildings, which archaeologists divide into eight different groups. Each group originates from different periods, so visitors can follow the development of Cham art. The sanctuary is surrounded by dense jungle, which lends a mystical atmosphere to the site.

Da Nang has a tropical monsoon climate, which means warm and humid weather year-round, with distinct dry and rainy seasons.

Dry season (January-August):

The dry period is the most ideal time to visit Da Nang, when there is little precipitation and pleasant temperatures. From January to March, the weather is particularly pleasant, with temperatures around 20-25°C and low humidity. From April to August, the weather gradually warms up, with temperatures expected between 28-35°C. This period is perfect for beaching, sightseeing, and outdoor activities.

Rainy season (September-December):

The rainy season begins in September and lasts until December, when frequent showers and occasional typhoons can occur. The average temperature ranges between 24-28°C, but due to high humidity, the perceived temperature may be higher. October and November have the heaviest rainfall, which can last for days. While this period is less suitable for beaching, nature is at its greenest and freshest during this time.

The city’s uniqueness lies in its abundance of temples: over 30 Buddhist monasteries and pagodas, with Wat Xieng Thong being the most famous. Built in the 1500s, this temple with its beautiful gold and mosaic decorations is one of Laos’ most beautiful sanctuaries. Another iconic location is Phou Si Hill, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape and sunset.

Kuang Si Waterfall

One of Laos’ most beautiful natural wonders is located south of Luang Prabang.

A three-tiered waterfall complex where crystal-clear water cascades into blue-green limestone pools. At the top level, water falls from a large cliff about 25 meters high, then flows through smaller cascades and pools.

The water’s turquoise color comes from high mineral content and limestone presence, especially visible during the dry season when water is clearer. Several pools are suitable for swimming, making it even more worth visiting.

Vientiane

Laos’ capital sits on the Mekong River bank, near the Thai border.

Its most famous symbol is Pha That Luang, a golden stupa considered Laos’ national symbol. According to Buddhist belief, this stupa contains a piece of Buddha’s bone, making it an especially sacred site.

Another iconic structure is the Patuxai, or Victory Gate, Laos’ version of the Paris Arc de Triomphe. This monument celebrates the country’s independence and offers wonderful city views from its top.

One of Vientiane’s oldest temples is Wat Sisaket, distinguished by thousands of Buddha statues and wall frescos. Wat Ho Phra Keo, a former Buddhist temple now serving as a museum, once housed the country’s most sacred statue, the Emerald Buddha.

This unique and wonderful sculpture park is near Vientiane.

Built in 1958 by Laotian Buddhist monk and mystic Bounleua Suliat, who combined Buddhist and Hindu mythology elements in the sculptures. Contains about 200 sculptures varying greatly in size and form, from tiny details to monumental works.

One of the park’s most spectacular pieces is a huge reclining Buddha statue depicting Buddha’s departure to nirvana. This statue symbolizes peace and enlightenment. Another is the „Hell and Paradise” sculpture. A giant spherical structure where Buddhist cosmology can be explored across three levels.

Vang Vieng

Located in central Laos along the Nam Song River, embraced by large limestone mountains and jungles.

The city is a center for active tourism. Rock climbing, zip-lining, and cave exploration are popular activities. The surrounding countryside has numerous hiking trails leading directly into jungles and mountains.

The area is full of impressive caves, like the easily accessible Tham Chang cave offering beautiful views. Adventure seekers can explore Tham Nam (Water Cave) by sliding through underground passages on inner tubes.

Si Phan Don

A picturesque archipelago in southern Laos on the lower Mekong River, near the Cambodian border. The name means „4000 islands”.

The area’s appearance changes during rainy season when the Mekong’s water level rises, leaving only the largest islands inhabited. The three most famous and popular islands are Don Khong, Don Det, and Don Khon.

Two popular attractions stand out. One major draw is the rare freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins living near the Cambodian border. The other is Khone Phapheng Falls. This is the Mekong River’s largest waterfall by volume, sometimes called „Asia’s Niagara Falls”.

Nong Khiaw

An enchanting small town in northern Laos, situated on the Nam Ou River amid scenic limestone cliffs.

The river is central to town life, used for boating, kayaking, and swimming. Don’t miss the Pha Daeng viewpoint. Though the path is steep, it offers magnificent panoramic views.

Several traditional Laotian villages are found nearby, including Ban Sop Houn and Ban Hat Sao. These villages showcase local crafting techniques, rice farming, and daily life.

Wat Phou

An ancient Khmer temple complex in southern Laos, near the Mekong River.

This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the country’s most important cultural and religious monuments. Originally built as a Hindu sanctuary, it underwent significant expansions during the Angkor Empire in the 10-12th centuries. After the empire’s decline, it became a pilgrimage site.

Similar to Angkor Wat, it’s arranged along an axis with three levels. The main sanctuary sits at the top level, built on a natural rock. It contains an ancient Shiva lingam statue and several Buddha statues.

Tad Fane Waterfall

Laos’ highest waterfall is located in the famous Bolaven Plateau region.

The waterfall is fed by two parallel rivers, Champi and Pak Koot, which plunge together down steep cliff faces, creating its unique appearance.

The surrounding area is excellent for hiking. Marked trails explore nearby forests, offering panoramic views of the waterfall and valley. Exotic plants and local wildlife can be encountered during hikes.

Tad Lo Waterfall

This waterfall complex is famous for its green landscape and coffee plantations.

It actually consists of three separate waterfalls. Tad Hang is the closest and most accessible waterfall, showing spectacular cascades during rainy weather. Tad Lo is the complex’s main waterfall, offering impressive views of water plunging from height. Tad Suong is the highest and most spectacular waterfall, reached by a longer walk.

Several ethnic minority villages, such as Katu or Alak villages, are located near the waterfalls.

Bokeo Nature Reserve

One of northern Laos’ most unique ecological regions located in the Golden Triangle area, near the Thai and Myanmar borders.

Covers about 136,000 hectares. Most of the region is dense, pristine rainforest, among the country’s best-preserved habitats. Its main attraction is the black-cheeked gibbon, believed extinct for decades.

The Gibbon Experience is a popular tourist program. Visitors can stay in tree-top huts and travel across the rainforest on zip lines, observing gibbons in their natural habitat.

Thakhek

A historically and naturally popular city in central Laos.

Thanks to its connection with Thailand, it was an important trade and transportation hub with rich historical background. The city played a significant role during French Indochina and still maintains its colonial architectural style.

The Thakhek Loop is one of the most famous routes around the city. This multi-day tour covering surrounding mountains, caves, and waterfalls is a real adventure for nature lovers. During the tour, visitors traverse beautiful landscapes and experience local villages and culture.

Cambodia is bordered by Thailand to the west and northwest, Laos to the northeast, and Vietnam to the east and southeast. It has a 443-kilometer coastline along the Gulf of Thailand.

Angkor Wat

Located near the city of Siem Reap, it’s one of the world’s most significant temple complexes and a popular attraction in Southeast Asia. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It was built during the reign of King Suryavarman II in the 12th century, with 50,000 workers, 5,000 sculptors, and stonemasons working for thirty years. The ruler was guided by the Hindu-rooted belief that after his death, he could return to the god Vishnu. All external and internal structures refer to symbols of the Hindu religion.

Interestingly, unlike earlier temples, it’s oriented to the west rather than the east. The main gate of the temple faces the sunset of the spring equinox, which is characteristic of mausoleums.

It’s an important national symbol representing the unity of the former Khmer Empire and today’s Cambodian people. The image of the temple appears on many state symbols, including the Cambodian flag, state coat of arms, and banknotes.

Angkor Thom

The ruined city next to Angkor Wat was the last capital of the Khmer Empire. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1992.

The city was built by King Jayavarman VII. The king, who lived at the turn of the 12-13th centuries, was remembered as the Great Builder. This resulted in numerous impressive structures: the Bayon, Ta Prohm, the Elephant Terrace, the Terrace of the Leper King or God Yama, Preah Khan, Prasat Suor Prat, and many smaller shrines.

The walls of the city, bringing to life the vision of earthly paradise, are adorned with five monumental gates. The bridges over the moat continue into roads beyond the gates, leading to the interior of the city and its central Bayon main temple. The temple is surrounded by ornate, covered corridors, from the top of which 49 „face towers” rise high.

Phnom Penh

It’s the capital and largest city of Cambodia. The metropolis, once called the Pearl of Asia, is now a popular destination.

Its most beautiful attraction is the Royal Palace in the center. Built in 1866, it’s still the official residence of the royal family. The palace complex encompasses numerous buildings, including the wonderful Silver Pagoda, named after the more than 5,000 silver tiles covering its floor. It houses several important Buddhist statues, including the famous Emerald Buddha and a gold Buddha statue.

The markets are not to be missed! As I usually say, if you can’t buy it here, it doesn’t exist. Two markets should be highlighted: the Central Market (Psar Thmei) and the Russian Market (Psar Toul Tom Poung) both await visitors with plenty of goods.

The Choeung Ek Memorial Museum presents a terrible period. In the 1970s, the Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot, tortured and murdered many people. This place was created in their memory. Its central element is a stupa with glass walls full of skulls.

Koh Rong

It’s one of Cambodia’s most popular islands in the Gulf of Thailand, located off the southwestern coast. It’s becoming increasingly popular among tourists.

It’s primarily known for its beautiful beaches. We can enjoy the good weather on the fine, white sandy beach stretching for more than 43 kilometers along the island’s coastline. The most famous of these are Long Beach, Sok San Beach, and Koh Toch Beach.

One of Koh Rong’s special natural phenomena is the bioluminescent plankton that can be observed glowing in the water at night. These tiny lights can be best observed in the more secluded parts of the island.

Kampot

The city on the banks of the Preaek Tuek Chhu River in southwestern Cambodia is known for its pepper plantations and colonial buildings.

High-quality pepper has been one of the main products of local agriculture for centuries. Many pepper plantations can be visited around the city, where visitors can learn how it’s grown and processed.

In the downtown area, there are numerous well-preserved or restored French colonial buildings that were erected in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Bokor National Park

Located 40 kilometers west of Kampot city, it’s part of the Bokor Mountain Range, established in the early 20th century.

Its most famous site is the once-thriving Bokor Hill Station, which was a mountaintop resort complex during the French colonial era: a hotel, casino, church, and royal residence. It was abandoned in the 1970s during the Pol Pot regime, and today the remains of a ghostly, abandoned settlement can be visited.

One of the park’s most beautiful natural attractions is the Popokvil Waterfall, which offers a particularly impressive sight during the rainy season when the water thunders down between the rocks.

There’s an old Buddhist pagoda in the park area, Wat Sampov Pram. Its specialty is five large boulders embedded in the rocky environment, reminiscent of a ship. This is where its name comes from. It offers a wonderful view of the surrounding landscape.

Battambang

Cambodia’s second-largest city is located in the northwestern part of the country, along the Sangker River.

One of its main attractions is the well-preserved French colonial buildings. The French architectural style mixes with the local Khmer style, providing a unique sight. Examples include the Governor’s Residence, Wat Damrey Sor temple, and Psar Nath market.

A special tourist attraction is the bamboo train, or Norry. This traditional, improvised railway vehicle consists of a simple bamboo platform and a small engine that runs on a single-track railway line. For tourists, this is a unique experience traveling through the country’s agricultural landscapes, while the device is quickly dismantled and reassembled if another bamboo train comes from the opposite direction.

Phnom Banan

The temple, located about 25 kilometers south of Battambang, sits atop a 400-meter high hill. It’s often called a smaller version of Angkor Wat.

It was built at the end of the 11th century during the reigns of Khmer kings Udayadityavarman I and Jayavarman II. The temple was a Hindu religious sanctuary and was dedicated to the deity Shiva. Its central element consists of five towers arranged around a foundation, forming a lotus flower. Its walls and towers are decorated with carvings depicting Hindu gods, mythological figures, and floral motifs.

Approaching the temple itself is a great challenge: you have to climb 358 steep steps to the top of the hill. However, it’s well worth it, as the view of the surrounding landscape is also wonderful.

Ratanakiri

The province on the border of Vietnam and Laos is famous for its pristine rainforests, beautiful waterfalls, and unique geographical features.

One of its most famous attractions is Yeak Laom crater lake, a volcanic origin lake with crystal clear water. The round, approximately 7000-year-old lake offers a stunning sight, and it’s surrounded by lush jungle, which is perfect for easy hikes. It’s considered a sacred place for local people, with many legends associated with it.

There are several spectacular waterfalls here as well. The most famous is Cha Ong, an 18-meter high cascade. Two others worth mentioning are the Ka Tieng and Kachanh waterfalls, which are also popular.

Preah Vihear

The temple near the Thai border is a UNESCO World Heritage site in northwestern Cambodia.

It played a central role in the religious life of the Khmer empire, as it was one of the main sites for Shiva worship sanctuaries. It was built on a 525-meter high rock on the edge of the Dangrek Mountains, which also gave it strategic importance.

Its architecture is an outstanding example of the classical Khmer style. It consists of five main sanctuaries arranged in a straight line behind each other, gradually rising towards the mountain top. The path from the entrance to the main sanctuary leads through several gates.

Tonle Sap Lake

It’s Cambodia’s largest and one of Southeast Asia’s most important freshwater lakes.

It has a unique water system: the area and water level of the lake change significantly seasonally. During the monsoon season, due to the rising water level of the Mekong River, the Tonle Sap River reverses direction and leads water back into the lake.
