The Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia is the city’s most famous attraction, housing the world-famous Riace Bronzes. Scilla

The town bears the name of the mythological creature known from the Odyssey, where the monster of Greek myths, Scylla, supposedly lived according to legends.

The settlement is divided into two parts: the modern downtown and the Chianalea fishing quarter, which is built directly at the water’s edge. Chianalea is a narrow strip along the coast where houses are built right on the water’s edge, and fishing nets practically hang from the terraces into the sea.

The Castello Ruffo castle towers on top of a rock, offering views of the Strait of Messina. Capo Vaticano

Located south of Tropea, this rocky coastline is famous for its crystal-clear water and cliff-studded shoreline. From the peninsula’s panoramic points, breathtaking views open up of the sea bays and distant volcanic islands. Hidden coves nestle between the area’s white sandy beaches and turquoise water.

The location is particularly popular among divers and snorkelers; colorful fish and sea caves await explorers in the depths. The water’s clarity allows us to see the seabed formations and marine life clearly even at five to ten meters deep. Several dive centers operate along the coast, from which guided tours depart.

Among the beaches, Grotticelle is the most famous, but numerous smaller, hidden coves are also accessible by a short walk or by boat. Some beaches can only be reached on foot or by boat, thus providing a quieter, less crowded environment.

Pizzo

The settlement located in the middle of the Gulf of Sant’Eufemia lies on the slope of a promontory, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The town built on the hillside facing the sea is known not only for the famous tartufo ice cream but also for its historic downtown and atmospheric beach. Colorful houses and narrow alleys create a Mediterranean atmosphere where locals’ daily life unfolds.

The Castello Murat is located in the heart of the town, where Joachim Murat, Napoleon’s brother-in-law and King of Naples, spent his last days before being executed. The small castle now operates as a museum, with exhibitions showcasing Murat’s life and Pizzo’s historical role. From the castle, a beautiful view opens up of the harbor and the sea.

Pizzo’s name has become synonymous with the dessert called tartufo di Pizzo: it’s a hazelnut or pistachio ice cream ball with melted chocolate hidden in the center, then rolled in cocoa powder. This specialty can be found in every ice cream parlor in town, with the most famous including Gelateria Ercole and Bar Dante.

Gerace

The medieval hilltop village is one of Calabria’s most beautiful and oldest towns, towering above the Ionian Sea. The settlement’s labyrinthine streets and ancient stone houses faithfully preserve the past.

The Gerace Cathedral is one of Southern Italy’s largest churches, a mix of Romanesque and Norman architectural styles. The massive church’s interior is decorated with impressive frescoes, and medieval tombstones line between the columns.

The Franciscan church is an architectural masterpiece of contrasts: the apse’s rich decoration sharply contrasts with the nave’s simplicity. Stilo

The picturesque small town lies at the foot of the Sila Mountains, in the valley of the Stilaro River, with rich historical heritage. The town is famous for its medieval architecture, which dates back to Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Norman times.

The Cattolica, a 10th-century Byzantine-style chapel with domes and brick covering, is quite unique. The small church’s perfect proportions and architectural solutions show an unparalleled example of Byzantine art. Inside, valuable frescoes preserve the spiritual heritage of past centuries, reflecting the finesse of Byzantine art.

From the town, hiking trails lead up the mountain, from which views open up of the entire region. Walking along the narrow streets, we pass medieval buildings and small churches.

Le Castella

The settlement’s most famous sight is the Aragonese castle on a peninsula jutting into the sea, dating from the 15th century. The castle now operates as a museum, preserving pieces of local history within its walls.

The castle connects to the mainland through a narrow strip of land, making it easily accessible on foot. From the fortress walls, beautiful views open up of the Ionian Sea and the surrounding coastline. The castle’s historical significance lies in being part of a fortification system that served to defend the coast.

Walking paths, small fish restaurants, and developed beaches line the shore, but the surrounding nature reserve also offers programs, such as bird watching or boat tours in the lagoons. The crystal-clear water of the Capo Rizzuto marine protected area is ideal for diving and snorkeling.

Cosenza

The city is a university center with a vibrant intellectual environment. It lies in the Crati River valley, where mountainous landscape meets Mediterranean culture. Baroque and Renaissance buildings mix in the city; in the old town center stand the San Francesco monastery, the cathedral, and several medieval palaces.

The historic quarter’s narrow streets and atmospheric squares invite strolling, where cafes and small shops line up. The modern city district lies on the opposite bank of the Crati River, full of young people, galleries, bars, and bookstores. The city’s cultural life is lively, with frequent art events and exhibitions.

One of the old town’s highlights on the hill is the Norman-Swabian castle, from whose walls an unparalleled panorama opens up of the surrounding area. Caminia Beach

Located on the Ionian Sea coast, between Catanzaro and Soverato, this hidden gem has not yet appeared on the mass tourism map.

The beach is situated between two imposing rocky-walled bays, creating natural protection from the wind. The shore is sandy, the water crystal-clear and shallow, making it popular among families as well. The location is calm, less developed than the region’s better-known beaches, thus offering an authentic beach experience.

The surrounding rocky formations provide a perfect location for snorkeling, where the seabed’s varied world can unfold before us. From the shore, a short hike leads to the San Gregorio cave, which can be visited both by land and water. Around the cave, a colorful marine world hides underwater.

Roccella Ionica

The town is recognized year after year with a blue flag for the coast’s cleanliness and service quality. A promenade runs along the kilometers-long fine sandy beach, lined with beach clubs, restaurants, and bars.

From the shore, the castle ruins are visible, towering on a rocky ridge above the town. The medieval fortress once played an important defensive role in protecting the coast. Today only part of the walls remain standing, but the view of the beach and distant mountains is worth the climb.

Music festivals and cultural events take place in the town during summer, enlivening the otherwise calm atmosphere. The local market offers fresh seafood and regional products. Olive groves and vineyards spread across the surrounding hillsides.

Praia a Mare

Located in the north, on the Cedar Coast, the settlement shows a special contrast: the meeting of black volcanic sand and brilliant blue sea creates a unique atmosphere.

Dino Island rises directly in front of the coast, Calabria’s largest island, a nature reserve with rich flora and fauna. The island can be reached by boat, which regularly departs from the harbor.

Numerous sea caves cut through the island’s coast, of which the Blue Cave is the most famous. In the cave, sunlight filtering through the underwater gives a dazzling blue color to the water and walls. The Gargiulo Cave opens underwater, accessible only to experienced divers. Other caves, such as the Lion Cave or the Monks’ Cave, can be discovered during tours.

On the mainland, the Madonna della Grotta sanctuary can be visited, built into a cave and considered a pilgrimage site. The town’s waterfront promenade creates a pleasant environment.

Badolato

The settlement consists of two parts: the coastal Marina di Badolato and the hilltop medieval Badolato Borgo, which lies five kilometers from the coast. The upper town was built in 1080, with a Norman castle erected on the hilltop for defensive purposes.

The Borgo counts thirteen churches, of which the Immacolata church is particularly spectacular: it stands at the village’s foot with its blue-gold dome. The settlement is also known as „the village of churches” because it has been an important religious center since medieval times. During Holy Week, special Easter ceremonies take place when hundreds dress in period costumes and reenact Christ’s Passion.

The Palazzo Gallelli noble palace was recently renovated and now operates as an exhibition space and cultural center. From the village, paths lead down to the beach, where long sandy beaches await bathers. In the 1980s, the village almost completely depopulated, but has since been revitalized, with foreign artists and returning families settling again.

Civita

In the heart of Pollino National Park, 450 meters high, this Albanian-origin village was settled in the 15th century by families fleeing from Albania. The Arbëreshë community still preserves its language, rituals, and traditions to this day. The settlement is often called „the eagles’ nest” because it nestles among the rocks.

The village’s most peculiar characteristic is the „Kodra houses” or „talking houses” which show anthropomorphic features: eyes formed by windows, noses by chimneys, mouths by doors draw out the buildings’ faces. These houses evoke the style of Albanian artist Ibrahim Kodra. The chimneys are particularly varied, with each family creating their own unique shape.

Below the village, the Devil’s Bridge arches over the Raganello stream, which according to legend was built by the devil in exchange for a soul. In the valley lies the Raganello Gorge with its limestone cliffs and hiking trails attracting nature lovers. During Greek-Byzantine rite Easter, the village presents special Albanian dances and songs that preserve the memory of the hero Skanderbeg.

Diamante

The town on the Cedar Coast is famous for two things: its murals and the pepper festival. Since 1981, more than two hundred murals have decorated the town center’s buildings, depicting scenes of local life, historical events, and artistic works. The artists came from an international community and transformed the town into an open-air museum.

Every September, the Peperoncino Festival is held, created in honor of Calabrian peppers. The five-day event features food stalls, cooking demonstrations, competitions, music, and cultural programs awaiting visitors. The festival’s creator, Enzo Monaco, also founded the Italian Pepper Academy, which operates in Diamante.

Beaches stretch for eight kilometers along the coast with different characteristics. Sabbia d’Oro has golden sand, while other parts are covered with small pebbles. Nearby is Cirella Island, Calabria’s second-largest island, where unchanged Mediterranean vegetation thrives. On the hill next to the town, the ancient ruins of Cirella are visible, where an ancient theater has also survived.

Santa Severina

Situated on a rocky ridge above the Neto River valley, this medieval settlement looks from afar like a ship built of stone. The Norman-Swabian castle in the village’s heart dates from the 11th century, with a square tower and four cylindrical watchtowers. The castle now houses an Archaeological Museum displaying finds from the area.

The village’s Byzantine roots are preserved by the Baptisterium, Calabria’s only intact Byzantine baptistery chapel. In the round building, 10th-12th century frescoes are visible, reflecting the finesse of Byzantine art. The cathedral was built in the 13th century but has been renovated several times, so today it shines in Baroque style.

In May or June, a medieval festival is held when the village residents wear Norman-era costumes and hold street theater performances. The area is famous for the local orange, the aranciàru variety, a specialty cultivated here for hundreds of years.

Rossano

The town, which today forms part of Corigliano-Rossano, bears the title of „Byzantine capital” in Calabria.

Its most famous treasure is the Codex Purpureus Rossanensis, a 6th-century Greek evangeliary written on purple parchment with gold and silver. The UNESCO World Heritage-listed codex can be viewed in the Diocesan Museum, where modern tactile devices help visitors.

The Santa Maria Achiropita Cathedral contains the miracle-working Virgin Mary fresco of the same name, which according to legend was not painted by human hands. The church’s floor is decorated with valuable mosaics, the interior space adorned with gold and Cypriot stone. At the top of the hill stands the Santa Maria del Patire Abbey, built in 1095 and once one of Southern Italy’s most significant monasteries.

Tourist traffic reaches its peak during two periods. The winter sports season begins in December and ends at the end of March. The summer season from July to September 15th is even more popular. During this time, rock climbers and tourists „invade” the Dolomites, taking advantage of the mountain region’s hiking trails and rocks.

There are two main routes that provide the easiest access: from Innsbruck in the north and from Lake Garda and Verona in the south.

Tre Cime di Lavaredo

The „Three Peaks of Lavaredo” is one of the most famous and iconic natural wonders of the Dolomites.

The three massive rock towers – Cima Piccola, Cima Grande, and Cima Ovest – boldly rise from the surrounding Alpine landscape, their sight breathtaking in every season. The mountains’ special shape attracts hikers, photographers, and nature lovers from all over the world.

The most popular hiking trail in the area is the Tre Cime circuit, which is about 10 kilometers long and can be completed in 3-4 hours. The path is easy to follow, while the peaks show different faces from every side. Along the way, we can rest at Alpine refuges where we can taste local delicacies.

Seceda

Seceda is one of the most breathtaking panoramas in the Dolomites.

After taking the Seceda cable car from the Ortisei valley, we find ourselves on a plateau at 2,519 meters high, from where there’s a 360-degree view of the surrounding peaks. The mountain range’s characteristic light gray limestone towers rise here in a particularly dramatic way above the green pastures.

Seceda’s specialty lies in its varied hiking opportunities. From easy walks to challenging via ferratas for experienced mountaineers, every difficulty level can be found here. The trail leading to Col Raiser peak is particularly popular, as along the way we can admire the wild romantic landscape of Puez-Odle Nature Park from numerous viewpoints.

Alpe di Siusi

Europe’s largest high-altitude pasture, a magical plateau of 57 square kilometers between 1,680-2,350 meters. This unique natural environment harmoniously combines Alpine meadows, traditional Tyrolean wooden houses, and the sight of steeply rising Dolomite peaks.

The pasture’s history goes back centuries, when local farmers drove their animals here in summer. Traditional mountain farms still operate today, where we can taste fresh cheeses and other Tyrolean specialties.

Alpe di Siusi is also known as a hiking paradise, with more than 300 kilometers of marked trails. In winter, it becomes a destination for cross-country skiers and winter hikers, when snow buries the green meadows under a thick blanket. The rock formations called „Witches’ Benches” are particularly popular photo subjects, where nature has carved special sculptures from limestone.

Sella Pass (Passo Sella)

The 2,244-meter-high Sella Pass is one of the busiest crossings in the Dolomites, connecting four valleys: Val Gardena, Val di Fassa, Val Badia, and Livinallongo del Col di Lana valleys. Due to the pass’s central location, it plays a key role in the region’s tourism network.

The Sella Ronda, one of the world’s most famous ski circuits, starts from here. In summer, it’s a paradise for cyclists and motorcyclists, as the serpentine roads offer excellent views of the surrounding peaks.

The pass’s historical significance is not negligible either: it was a strategically important location during World War I, and wartime tactical monuments are still visible today. Among the Sella massif’s Via Ferrata tours is one of the most beautiful, the Piz da Lech trail, which offers an unforgettable experience for intermediate hikers.

Passo Pordoi

The 2,239-meter-high Pordoi Pass rightfully bears the title „Queen of the Dolomites” as it offers the most comprehensive panorama of the mountain range’s peaks.

The cable car from the pass to the top of Sass Pordoi provides direct access to the 2,950-meter „Terrace of the Dolomites”, from where on clear days you can even glimpse the distant Ortler peak. This viewpoint is particularly popular during sunset times.

The geological richness of the pass area is exceptional: here dark volcanic rock meets light Dolomite limestone, creating a special contrast in the landscape. The Pordoi Pass Museum here presents the area’s geological development and World War I events in detail. Next to the museum stands a 52-meter observation tower that provides an even higher perspective.

Sassolungo Group

One of the most recognizable and photographed mountain ranges in the Dolomites, whose 3,181-meter main peak confidently dominates the surrounding landscape.

It consists of five main peaks, of which Sassopiatto (3,026 m) is the most famous alongside Sassolungo. These steep peaks, divided by vertical walls, offer a monumental sight, especially when viewed from Alpe di Siusi.

The mountain group is extremely interesting from a geological perspective: coral reefs from the Triassic period shaped its current form, which explains the characteristic light color and the terraced structure alternating with steep walls. The Sassolungo Via Ferrata is one of the most classic Dolomite hiking routes, offering an unforgettable experience for experienced hikers near the main peak.

Around the mountain group are several refuges, of which Rifugio Sasso Piatto and Rifugio Demetz are particularly popular. Hiking trails from here also lead to the nearby Puez-Odle Nature Park.

Tofane Mountain Group

The group’s three main peaks – Tofana di Rozes (3,225 m), Tofana di Mezzo (3,244 m), and Tofana di Dentro (3,238 m) – tower above Cortina d’Ampezzo.

These massive peaks, divided by steep walls, offer a monumental sight especially when viewed from the south side. The Tofane’s geological structure is exceptionally varied: the alternation of dark gray main dolomite and lighter limestone layers draws a special pattern on the rocks.

During World War I, the Tofane became strategically important, and numerous historical monuments still preserve the events of that time. The Via Ferrata delle Trincee („trenches via ferrata”) offers a unique hiking experience, as it leads through wartime trenches and bunkers. The Lagazuoi tunnel, which Italian soldiers blew under Austrian positions, now operates as a museum and provides insight into the difficulties of mountain warfare.

The Tofane area’s hiking opportunities are extremely varied: from easy family hikes to extreme rock climbing, everything can be found. Rifugio Giussani and Rifugio Dibona are excellent starting points for exploring higher regions, while the Ra Valles ski lift makes the middle altitudes easily accessible.

Marmolada

Also called the „Queen of the Dolomites” as it contains the mountain range’s highest point, the 3,343-meter Punta Penia.

This imposing mountain range differs from other Dolomite peaks not only in size but also in character: a huge glacier covers the summit regions, which is the Dolomites’ only significant glacier. However, the Marmolada glacier is continuously shrinking due to climate change, giving special significance to visiting it.

The massif’s southern wall is the Dolomites’ largest and steepest rock face, rising more than 1,000 meters above the valley. This „Silver Wall” is beloved by rock climbers, where some of the world’s most difficult climbing routes can be found. The Via Ferrata delle Trincee also runs through the World War I front line here, where Italian and Austro-Hungarian troops fought in the icy heights.

The Marmolada cable car system allows visitors to easily reach 3,265 meters altitude, from where a breathtaking panorama opens over the entire Dolomite mountain range. From the peak on clear days, you can even glimpse the Adriatic Sea, while to the north, the peaks of the Tyrolean and Austrian Alps appear.

Villnöss Valley (Val di Funes)

Perhaps the most photographed Alpine landscape in the world, where the small church of St. Magdalena against the backdrop of the Odle mountain group creates an image that has appeared on countless postcards, calendars, and tourist publications.

The valley’s cultural heritage is special: the population still speaks German today and preserves the traditional Tyrolean architectural style. The peasant houses decorated with carved wooden balconies, the onion-domed church towers, and the traditional form of hayricks create an authentic Alpine atmosphere. The farmers living here still cultivate their lands using traditional methods and make their famous cheeses and meat products.

It’s also known as a hiking paradise: the Adolf Munkel Weg starts from here, which is the valley’s most beautiful panorama route. During the hike, we walk through flowering meadows, cross streams, and can continuously admire the changing faces of the Odle group. The Zanser Alm at the upper end of the valley is a particularly popular destination, from where a short hike leads to the heart of Puez-Odle Nature Park.

Fassa Valley (Val di Fassa)

It belongs to the last bastions of Ladin culture, where a significant part of the population still speaks this ancient Romance dialect today.

Canazei, the valley’s central settlement, is one of the most important tourist centers in the Dolomites. From here, cable cars depart to Belvedere and Col Rodella, from where there’s an unparalleled view of the Marmolada and Sella sections. The settlement’s gastronomy uniquely combines Italian, Austrian, and Ladin traditions: in local restaurants, we can taste canederli dumplings, casunziei filled pasta, and special mountain cheeses.

Among the valley’s natural beauties, the proximity of Lake Carezza and the world of flowering meadows under the Catinaccio group stand out. In summer, the color splendor of Alpine roses and mountain orchids provides a dazzling sight.

Rosengarten Group (Catinaccio)

The mountain group boasts one of the most romantic legends of the Dolomites.

According to tradition, the dwarf king Laurin planted his kingdom with roses, which still make the rocks glow red at sunset – this is the „Enrosadira” phenomenon. The rock towers grouped around the 3,004-meter main peak Catinaccio d’Antermoia offer the most beautiful sight especially when viewed from Lake Carezza.

Among the several Via Ferratas around Rosengarten, the Santner and Laurin routes are the most popular, offering unforgettable experiences for intermediate-level hikers. The surrounding rifugios, especially Rifugio Vajolet and Rifugio Re Alberto, are excellent accommodations.

Bletterbach Gorge

Often referred to as „South Tyrol’s Grand Canyon”: the 8-kilometer-long and 400-meter-deep geological wonder reveals 15 million years of Earth’s history.

40 different rock layers can be observed on the gorge walls, including 280-200 million-year-old Permian red sandstone and the famous dinosaur footprints.

During the gorge tour, numerous fossils and rock samples can be studied: marine shells, corals, and plant remains tell of the time when this area still lay under a tropical sea. The hiking trail is equipped with professional explanatory boards that help understand the phenomena seen. The gorge is a protected natural area, so it can only be visited with a guide.

Around Bletterbach is the Geopark museum, which makes the area’s geological specialties even more understandable with interactive exhibitions and 3D models. The gorge can also be visited in winter, when icicles and snow-covered rock walls create a magical winter landscape.

Most beautiful lakes in the Dolomites

Lago di Carezza

Lake Carezza bears the name „Pearl of the Dolomites”: a magical mountain lake 85 meters long and 295 meters wide, lying at 1,534 meters altitude at the foot of the Catinaccio group.

The lake’s water color constantly changes: from turquoise to emerald green, from deep blue to almost black shades, depending on light conditions and seasons. This color play is due to the lake’s special mineral composition and light refraction.

According to Ladin legend, the lake was created when a wizard failed to seduce a water fairy, so in anger he threw his emeralds and pearls into the lake. The walk around the lake can be completed in about 40 minutes and offers numerous photo spots with the peaks of the Latemar mountain group towering in the background.

The forests around the lake are extremely varied: spruces, silver firs, and red pines alternate, among which numerous rare plant and animal species live. The Carezza ski area near the lake provides excellent skiing opportunities in winter, while in summer you can hike around the Latemar group.

Lago di Braies

Commonly known as „Pragser Wildsee”, it is the Dolomites’ largest natural lake and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful sights in the mountain range.

The 31-hectare lake at 1,496 meters altitude perfectly reflects the surrounding Seekofel (2,810 m) and Croda del Becco (2,810 m) peaks in its emerald green water surface. The lake’s special color is due to limestone dissolved in the water and light reflection, which creates different shades on the water surface at different times of day.

The 3.5-kilometer walking path around the lake offers a breathtaking experience in every season: in spring the lakeside meadows are full of wildflowers, in summer the forests provide cool shade, in autumn the colorful foliage of deciduous trees reflects in the water, and in winter the frozen lake and snow-covered surroundings create a fairytale atmosphere. At the southern end of the lake is the Pragser Wildsee Hotel, which was already a favorite resort of the monarchy’s aristocracy at the end of the 19th century.

Baradello Castle

The ruins of the historic fortress towering above Como offer stunning views of the city and lake.

The castle was founded in 1158 by German-Roman Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa after the siege of Como. The fortress’s strategic importance lay in its ability to control the northern part of the lake and surrounding trade routes. The castle served as a fortification for several centuries until it began to deteriorate in the 17th century. Today only its ruins are visible, but these still provide an imposing sight.

The hiking trail leading to the castle winds upward through beautiful natural surroundings and offers unparalleled views of the area along the way. From the top of the fortress, a 360-degree panorama unfolds, encompassing the entire Lake Como, the city, and the surrounding Alps.

Brunate Funicular

One of Como’s most famous attractions has been transporting visitors to the village of Brunate towering above the city since 1894.

The funicular travels along a 1050-meter track and covers a 496-meter elevation difference in seven minutes. The railway’s construction was a significant technical achievement at the end of the 19th century and still works excellently with its original mechanism. The cars have a vintage atmosphere, and during the journey, stunning views open over Como, the lake, and the surrounding countryside.

The journey itself is an experience, as the railway travels on a steep slope through forests and rocky sections. The train also includes two stops along the way. The journey offers a special experience in every season, in winter over snow-white landscapes and in summer through lush green forests.

Brunate Viewpoint

From the famous viewpoint of Brunate village, located 715 meters above Como, a breathtaking panorama opens over the area.

Brunate is often called „Como’s balcony” and this designation perfectly describes this magical place. The view from the village encompasses the entire Lake Como, the city, the Lombard plain, and on clear days even Milan’s skyscrapers.

The village exudes an intimate atmosphere with its small, charming streets and traditional houses. Numerous restaurants and cafes can be found here where visitors can rest and enjoy local specialties. It’s an ideal starting point for various hiking trails leading to the surrounding mountains.

Como weather: when is the best time to visit?

Como has a four-season, temperate continental climate moderated by the proximity of Lake Como.

Spring (March-May):

Spring is pleasantly warm and gradually becomes sunnier. Average temperatures range between 8-20°C, and precipitation is moderate. At the end of April and in May, the city’s parks and gardens bloom, making this one of the most beautiful periods for nature lovers. Pleasant walks can be taken along the lakeshore, and mountain hiking is also ideal at this time.

Summer (June-August):

Summer is warm but not excessively hot, with average temperatures ranging between 18-28°C. Due to the lake’s proximity, humidity can be higher, but mountain breezes moderate the heat. This season is ideal for water sports, boat trips, and outdoor activities. Rainy days are rarer, but heavy summer thunderstorms can occur.

Autumn (September-November):

Autumn is one of Como’s most beautiful seasons when the surrounding mountains dress in colorful foliage. Average temperatures range between 10-22°C, and precipitation gradually increases. October is particularly pleasant, with ideal weather for sightseeing and hiking. The harvest season gives the area a special atmosphere.

Winter (December-February):

Winter is cool but not extremely cold, with average temperatures ranging between 2-10°C. Occasional snowfall occurs, lending a magical atmosphere to the city. Winter is a quieter period in tourism, but it can still be attractive for lovers of Christmas markets and winter sports.

Best time to visit:

Throughout history, Bergamo has been a strategically important city in Northern Italy, which has preserved its unique character thanks to its special geographical location. The city consists of two main parts: Città Alta (upper city) and Città Bassa (lower city). The former is the old town with most of the attractions, while the latter is the modern residential district built in the 20th century.

Bergamo attractions

Upper City (Città Alta)

The most enchanting part of Bergamo is the medieval old town built on a hill, which is one of Europe’s best-preserved historical centers. The architectural style developed under Venetian rule still defines the city’s character today.

Walking through the cobblestone streets, you immediately feel the special atmosphere created by the carefully preserved medieval buildings, narrow alleys, and hidden small squares. Gothic churches, Renaissance palaces, and Baroque facades alternate with each other.

The old town is not a museum, but a living historical center where people still live, traditional shops operate, and authentic restaurants function. The funicolare, the funicular railway, makes it easier to reach the top, which is an experience in itself.

Piazza Vecchia

Many consider Bergamo’s central square one of Italy’s most beautiful main squares.

It has preserved masterpiece examples of Venetian architecture unchanged since the 15th century, surrounded on all sides by buildings of historical significance. The buildings around the square still serve their original functions today.

The Contarini fountain stands in the center of the square, built in the 18th century and serving as a symbol of Venetian rule. The imposing facade of Palazzo della Ragione, the old town hall, dominates the square, while the clock tower chimes every hour.

Bergamo Cathedral (Duomo di Bergamo)

The cathedral founded in 1459 is the center of Bergamo’s religious life and one of the city’s most significant architectural monuments.

The facade received its current form in the 19th century, harmoniously combining neo-Gothic and neoclassical elements. The imposing facade made of white marble is visible from afar.

Its interior is a stunning treasury of art, where Renaissance and Baroque elements meet. The main altar is decorated with paintings by Giovan Battista Moroni, while the chapels along the naves display works by local masters.

The cathedral treasury preserves valuable liturgical objects, including medieval chalices, vestments, and illuminated manuscripts that showcase the rich history of the Bergamo church.

Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore

This stunning Romanesque-Lombard style basilica was built in the 12th century and is one of Bergamo’s most sacred places.

The building’s peculiarity is that it has no main facade – visitors enter through side doors. The exterior walls are decorated with rich carvings and reliefs depicting biblical scenes. The walls are covered with frescoes, including works by Giovan Battista Tiepolo. The church ceiling is dominated by gilded coffered decoration.

The basilica’s historical significance goes beyond its architectural beauty: Gaetano Donizetti, Bergamo’s greatest composer, rests here. The composer’s tomb is a separate pilgrimage site for classical music lovers. The church has excellent acoustics, so concerts are regularly held here, especially featuring Donizetti’s works. During the pilgrimage held on Saint Bartholomew’s Day, the entire city makes a pilgrimage to the basilica.

Cappella Colleoni

The chapel is actually a mausoleum: here rests Bartolomeo Colleoni, the Bergamo captain who served the Venetian Republic.

Created by Giovanni Antonio Amadeo, it perfectly combines Lombard traditions with Tuscan Renaissance innovations. The ensemble of colored marble mosaics, gilded details, and finely carved decorative elements provides a unique spectacle. Colleoni’s equestrian statue is visible in the tympanum above the gate, while the walls are decorated with reliefs of mythological and religious scenes.

The interior of the chapel is also wonderful: colored marble inlays, gilded stuccos, and frescoes cover the walls. The frescoes visible on the ceiling are works of Tiepolo’s school, depicting biblical and mythological scenes.

Rocca di Bergamo

The fortress rising at the city’s highest point was of strategic importance.

The 14th-century castle’s foundations were laid by the Romans, then expanded by the Venetians to its current form. Behind the thick walls and bastions operates a small museum that presents Bergamo’s military history from the Middle Ages to the present: military historical objects, weapons, and armor can be viewed.

The Rocca’s specialty is the breathtaking panorama that opens from the bastions. From here, the entire Po Plain can be seen, and on clear days, even the towers of Milan’s Cathedral are visible. From the western side, the snowy peaks of the Alps are outlined, while to the southeast, the Lombard plain extends to the horizon.

San Vigilio Fortress

The medieval fortification is located even higher than the Rocca.

The fortress was built in the 10th century and served Bergamo’s defense for centuries. From the castle courtyard, a 360-degree panorama unfolds before visitors: the Alpine view extending on the western side is particularly stunning.

The castle houses two museums: the Roman Museum displays archaeological finds from prehistoric times and the Roman era, while the Risorgimento Museum presents documents related to the Italian independence movement.

Gombito Tower

The 12th-century watchtower rising in the old town is one of Bergamo’s most iconic buildings.

The 52-meter-high tower was once the city’s most important defense point, from where the surroundings were watched and signals given in case of danger. The massive stone walls and narrow windows still reveal its original purpose. The view from the top is unique: from here, the old town’s street network, the rooftops of historical buildings, and the distant Alps are best visible.

A small museum operates on the ground floor of the tower, presenting medieval life in Bergamo. Here you can see period weapons, household items, and documents presenting the tower’s history. The small square around the tower, Largo Gombito, is a lively part of the old town.

Porta San Giacomo

One of the most beautiful and imposing gates of the Venetian city wall, built in the 16th century as the city’s western entrance.

The gate’s facade is decorated with the Lion of Saint Mark, which was the symbol of Venetian rule in Bergamo. Its structure is perfectly preserved: the exterior and interior facades, the arched passage, and the guard rooms are all visible in their original form.

From here begins Via San Giacomo, which leads straight to the heart of the city, towards Piazza Vecchia. From the small terrace on top of the gate, there’s a beautiful view of Città Bassa and the distant mountains.

Porta San Lorenzo

The eastern city gate is another important element of the Venetian fortification system, also built in the 16th century.

The gate’s specialty is the double defense system: an outer and inner gate form a unit, with a small courtyard between them. This solution allowed defenders to trap attackers between the two gates in case of enemy intrusion.

The facade of Porta San Lorenzo is simpler than that of the San Giacomo gate, but this very simplicity makes it elegant. The relief above the gate depicts Saint Lawrence, one of the city’s patron saints. From the gate begins Via Porta Dipinta, which is one of Bergamo’s oldest streets and home to numerous historical buildings.

Venetian City Walls (Mura Veneziane)

The 16th-century fortification system is one of Europe’s best-preserved Renaissance city defenses, now part of UNESCO World Heritage.

The 6-kilometer wall erected by the Venetians is a perfect example of medieval military architecture, which not only served defensive purposes but was also a symbol of political power. The city wall is now a popular promenade.

Walking on the walls, we can admire Bergamo’s panorama from different viewpoints: from the city through the surrounding mountains all the way to the distant Alps.

Porta Nuova

Located in the heart of the modern Città Bassa (lower city), this 19th-century gate is a symbol of Bergamo’s modern development.

The gate was built during the city’s modernization, when the lower city was developed and transformed into a modern city by European standards. The elegant lines and harmonious proportions of the gate built from white limestone perfectly fit the atmosphere of the surrounding streets.

The area around Porta Nuova is one of Bergamo’s liveliest parts, where modern shops, restaurants, and cafes line up. Near the gate is the Donizetti Theater, which is the center of the city’s cultural life.

Accademia Carrara

One of Italy’s most significant art collections has been preserving the cultural heritage of Bergamo and Lombardy since the 18th century.

The museum grew from the private collection of its founder, Count Giacomo Carrara. Among the Venetian painters, works by Giovanni Bellini, Francesco di Simone, Andrea Previtali, Palma Vecchio can be seen, among the Bergamo artists Cariani, Evaristo Baschenis, Fra Galgario, while among the Milanese artists Borgognone and Bernardino Luini’s paintings are displayed.

Additionally, works by Fra Angelico, Tiepolo, Pisanello, Canaletto, Van Dyck, Ruysdael, Cranach, and Dürer are also featured. The gallery also contains a rich and valuable drawing collection of more than 2000 pieces, as well as approximately 8000 prints, including Canaletto’s Venice series.

Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art (GAMeC)

The center of Bergamo’s modern artistic life, showcasing the most significant works of 20th-century contemporary Italian art.

GAMeC, with 1500 square meters of exhibition space, is a versatile contemporary art and cultural center located next to the Pinacoteca dell’Accademia Carrara. A 15th-century monastery building was converted into a modern museum, perfectly combining the requirements of historical framework and contemporary functionality.

The gallery provides home to all forms of contemporary art: temporary individual and group exhibitions by international artists, new projects by emerging artists, as well as numerous complementary programs designed for different types of audiences.

Bergamo weather: when is the best time to visit?

Bergamo has a North Italian Alpine climate, showing a mixture of continental and Mediterranean influences.

Spring (March-May):

The city’s special vegetation becomes truly spectacular in spring – everything is lush green, and you can see special trees, shrubs, and flowers that are not always observable elsewhere. Bergamo’s summer is pleasant and moderate, not extremely hot like in the southern Mediterranean areas. Summer is pleasant, not hot, making it ideal for outdoor programs and sightseeing. In February 2024, I traveled to Paris on a Friday, but the return trip was quite expensive. So it was convenient that there was a cheap ticket to Rome on Monday morning, and then from there to Budapest late Tuesday evening. With this, I was able to make up for the missed attractions.

Since I love beautiful churches, I visited 16 churches during the day and a half! However, I’ll only write about those that stand out from the rest! And all of them are free!

Monday

Getting into Rome

The plane landed at Fiumicino airport at noon on Monday, from where I traveled to Roma Termini station on the Leonardo Express. I bought the ticket online at the station, 14 euros one way. It takes 30 minutes to get to the main station, this is the simplest way to enter. The QR code received must be scanned at the entrance gate and then you can board the train. The ticket can be purchased on the Trenitalia website (registration required).

My accommodation was two streets away from Termini, I dropped off my bag and went straight to the city. Since most of the sights are in the city center, I didn’t buy a day ticket, I walked everywhere. True, by Tuesday afternoon I didn’t feel like walking much anymore, but that’s the price if you want to see a lot in a short time. 🙂

Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica

This church, which I have to highlight, was two blocks from my accommodation. There were many tourists along with me, which shows that it’s worth visiting.

In addition to its large size, what stands out is the gilded ceiling and the side row of columns. I also came here in the evening, it’s beautiful when illuminated.

Forum of Augustus and Trajan’s Market

After about a 1 km walk, I arrived opposite the Roman Forum, where this ancient part is located.

Most of it consists of wall and column remains, but the market hall is quite distinguishable. The semicircular part of the building is in particularly good condition.

Victor Emmanuel II Monument

The marble monument can be called Budapest’s Heroes’ Square. In front of the colonnade section, you can see the equestrian statue of King Victor Emmanuel II, who was the first king of united Italy.

Definitely go up the stairs, because both the monument itself and the view are magnificent. You can walk around, so you can also see the Colosseum. You can exit to the western side through the building (there’s a free restroom inside).

Campidoglio

The Capitol, designed by Michelangelo, rises behind the monument. You have to climb up a staircase, but it’s worth it.

In the center of the small square is the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, with two museums on either side. On the opposite side of the square, a small street leads to the right, from where there is a wonderful panorama of the Roman Forum.

Teatro di Marcello

I continued walking towards the Tiber, and along the main road we come across a „mini Colosseum”. The ancient theater can only be viewed from the outside, but it’s a very atmospheric place, as are the surrounding streets.

Fontana delle Tartarughe

Rome is also abundant in fountains, but of course everyone looks at the Trevi Fountain. Yet there are also some very cute small fountains. Like this one. I love little gems like this.

Largo di Torre Argentina

I stumbled upon this square on my way to Piazza Navona. Here too we can see ancient ruins, in fact I moved on after a short stop.

Sant’Andrea della Valle Basilica

A heavy shower arrived almost instantly, so I reached the church just in time (it was planned anyway).

Its interior is very beautiful, characterized by a huge dome and wonderful frescoes. Honestly, I’m not very religious, but such a church really fills one with energy.

Piazza Navona

Rome’s most beautiful square – in my opinion – where three very beautiful fountains stand. No wonder there were so many people. Needless to say, here too a church is the other defining building. However, it was not possible to enter this one.

Fortunately, it was no longer raining here, in fact the weather was starting to clear.

San Luigi dei Francesi

I discovered this on my way to the Pantheon. This is France’s national church, with Caravaggio paintings inside. Don’t miss it!

Pantheon

In 2022, it was still free, but now you have to buy a ticket. This wouldn’t have been a problem, but the crowd was. The line was terribly long, people were admitted to the church in sections.

Although I would have liked to see it from the inside, I didn’t feel like waiting, so I walked around it and moved on.

Column of Marcus Aurelius

I emerged on the square on my way to the Trevi Fountain, in the middle of which rises the tall, ornate column.

On the square, there is also a government building and a small fountain. I managed to take a very nice picture here:

Trevi Fountain

I don’t think I need to write much here. The crowd was huge now, just like two years ago. Everyone wants to take a photo up close, some even climb onto the monument. I don’t understand what they’re thinking…

Walking towards the accommodation, there is also a fountain in the middle of the junction in front of the Termini station. The sunset and the clouds together provided such a sight, as if it were a painting:

Luggage storage

Since I didn’t want to carry my bag all day, I looked for a storage place online. BagLocker is two streets away from Termini, open from 7 am to 11 pm. You need to book online in advance, and you also need to provide a four-digit code. In the confirmation email, there will be a link that, when clicked, opens the box (and the code is also needed). Within the booked period, we can open it with the link as many times as we want.

There are boxes of various sizes, the smallest was more than enough for my backpack and coat. It was 9 euros, which was well worth it to be able to leave it in a safe place.

Colosseum

Obviously this is the most well-known, although it’s not my „1st place”.

You have to book tickets online, there are 10-minute time slots. I booked for 10:10 on Tuesday, and I got in line a few minutes before. The ticket shows where the entrance is. Despite the huge crowd, I got in quite quickly. You can walk halfway around the lower level and completely around the upper level. For the closed sections, you need a Full Experience ticket, which is a bit more expensive.

What they built in ancient times is impressive. Its size can truly be seen from the inside. Of course, I didn’t expect much more, I spent about 40 minutes inside.

The ticket is also valid for the Roman Forum, and together the two are definitely worth the price! You can enter there from the time booked for the Colosseum until 24 hours later.

Santi Giovanni e Paolo Basilica

Before the Roman Forum, I popped into this church. Its specialty is that the interior is illuminated with decorated chandeliers. However, they don’t burn constantly, the light switch works with 5 euros.

Someone just put in money before me, so I could admire the church like this for a while. But it would have been well worth it if I had had to pay for it. I think this comes across in the pictures too.

Roman Forum

As I mentioned, the ticket is valid together with the Colosseum. Since they are next to each other, I entered through the entrance closest to the arena (Via di S. Gregorio, 30). Since there is no specific time here, there is no large crowd, I got in almost immediately.

It’s worth following the route posted at the entrance. First it leads on the side towards the Circus Maximus, then comes the viewpoint to the large area. From here, the view to the lower part is the most beautiful. You have to go down the stairs to this plaza, which was once one of Rome’s main centers.

Trastevere

I walked over to the other side of the Tiber, which is an atmospheric neighborhood. There are many restaurants and cafes, and you can take very nice walks on the narrow little streets.

St. Peter’s Square

There is always a large crowd in the square, and now was no exception. Since touring the Vatican requires a lot of time, I didn’t plan for this.

Castel Sant’Angelo

Since I had an appointment at Villa Borghese, unfortunately I couldn’t go in, I just walked around the outside. Good pictures can be taken from the bridge in front of it. (There is a restroom on the left side when facing the castle.)

Piazza del Popolo

There are usually many amateur performing artists on one of Rome’s central squares. There was a pianist, a singer, and a guitarist too. That’s why I rested here for 10 minutes, enjoying the atmosphere a bit.

One striking feature of the square is the two domed churches next to each other. I’ve never seen anything like it, as if they made a copy. 🙂

Villa Borghese

A large park in the immediate vicinity of the city center. Actually, it’s an average green area, with some statues, fountains, buildings.

Borghese Gallery

In the Borghese park, in the villa of the same name, is the famous collection. A week before, tickets were only available for the latest time slot (17:45-19:00), which is a few euros cheaper than normal.

For me, this took the prize, no wonder I was looking forward to this the most! Wonderful rooms, the ceiling frescoes and the decorated walls would be worth the visit on their own. But you can see many works by famous artists: Tiziano, Caravaggio, Rubens, Raffaelo.

There are two floors, one with only paintings, the other with sculptures in addition to that. Among the latter, Bernini’s works must be highlighted.

Out to the airport

The Wizz Air flight to Hungary, Budapest departed at 22:55 from Fiumicino airport. I also went out from Termini on the Leonardo Express, bought the ticket online a few hours before. Here too, you have to scan the QR code at the entrance gate and then you can go to the train. Compared to Italians, everything goes very smoothly and the train is punctual. 🙂

Sardinia attractions

Cagliari

The capital of Sardinia was built on the coast in the southern part of the island. It has a rich historical past dating back to the Nuragic culture, and its cityscape has been influenced by Phoenician, Roman, Pisan, and Spanish conquests.

The modern part of the city stretches along the coast, while the old part of the city, Castello, was founded on top of high hills, offering a breathtaking view of the surrounding areas and the sea. The walls and towers of the Castello district, such as the Elephant Tower and the San Pancrazio Tower, still stand and are important tourist attractions.

There are several renowned museums in the city. The most famous is the National Archaeological Museum, which displays the island’s prehistory and remains from the Roman era.

Cagliari attractions

Castelsardo

Located in the northern part of Sardinia, the town sits on a high rock and offers a wonderful view of the Gulf of Asinara. It was founded in the 12th century by the Genoese Doria family and has preserved its medieval character with winding streets and narrow alleys.

Its most significant attraction is the Castello dei Doria, a well-preserved fortress. Today it houses the Mediterranean Weaving and Spinning Museum (Museo dell’Intreccio Mediterraneo), showcasing the region’s traditional craft techniques, especially basket weaving.

Alghero

Located on the northwestern coast of Sardinia. The city is a unique blend of Italian and Catalan cultures, thanks to the historical Catalan conquest.

The general opinion about its old town is that its buildings are very similar to the structures of Catalan medieval architecture. Locals often refer to Alghero as „Barceloneta” (little Barcelona). Its most characteristic building is the cathedral, which clearly bears the features of the Catalan Gothic style.

Neptune’s Caves

The cave system near Alghero is one of the most popular natural attractions on the island.

There are two ways to reach the caves: by sea via boat or from the mainland, where a steep staircase, the Escala del Cabirol (Goat’s Staircase), leads down to its entrance through more than 650 steps.

Inside, there are huge halls and wonderful stalactite formations, including bright stalactites and giant stalagmites. The most famous section is the „Music Room”, known for its special acoustics. One of the most beautiful parts of the cave is the lake, whose crystal-clear water reflects the decorations on the ceiling and walls of the cave.

Olbia

Located in the northeastern part of the island, this settlement is an important port city and tourism center.

Olbia’s history dates back to Phoenician times, and it was later an important Roman port. There are numerous archaeological sites in the city, including the remains of the famous Roman-era bridge and the ancient San Simplicio Basilica. The imposing early Christian church is one of Sardinia’s most important Romanesque buildings.

The area has several wonderful beaches that attract tourists. Among these, the Costa Smeralda resort stands out with two popular beaches, Liscia Ruja and Capriccioli.

Bosa

This medieval town is famous for its colorful houses lined along the Temo riverbank and the well-preserved Malaspina Castle.

The castle stands on a hilltop and was built in the 12th century. It bears the name of the Malaspina family, who ruled this area for a long time and played an important role in local history. The castle offers a wonderful view of the Temo River, the town, and the surrounding landscape. Today it functions as a museum, showcasing the region’s history and culture.

Sassari

Sardinia’s second-largest city is located in the northwestern part of the island. The city has been under various rules, so its historical and cultural heritage is significant.

The „Corso Vittorio Emanuele” is the main street of the medieval city, surrounded by interesting buildings of different ages, which are typical examples of the Catalan-Gothic style (for example, the baroque church of Sant’ Andrea). It is known for its „palazzo”, neoclassical squares such as Piazza d’Italia, and the Teatro Civico.

The gastronomy should also be highlighted. Typical foods of the city are various types of snails (locally called „ciogga”), as well as the Sardinian specialty, favata, made with cabbage, broad beans, and sausage. Another local dish is the roasted meat called „ziminu”.

The most beautiful beaches in Sardinia

La Pelosa

Located in the northwestern tip of Sardinia, near Stintino. It is one of the most popular and most photographed beaches in Italy.

Famous for its fine, white sand and crystal-clear, turquoise water that extends shallowly into the sea. It’s also an ideal beach for families with children.

It’s worth visiting the nearby 16th-century Torre della Pelosa watchtower, as well as the opposing Isola Piana island and the more distant Asinara National Park.

La Cinta

Located near the town of San Teodoro in the northeastern part, it’s also a popular beach.

This long, curved beach is famous for its fine, white sand and crystal-clear, shallow turquoise water. The San Teodoro lagoon rising behind it and the distant mountains, which are home to many bird species, including flamingos, are spectacular.

Porto Giunco

Located in Villasimius, in the southeastern corner of Sardinia.

On the southern part of the white sandy beach rises the Torre di Porto Giunco, an old watchtower that offers a great view of the surroundings.

The path to the beach itself is an experience, as it passes by the lagoon where pink flamingos are often seen.

Poetto

Cagliari’s main beach has a wide sandy stretch and excellent infrastructure.

The approximately 8 km-long beach connects Cagliari with Quartu Sant’Elena. Its promenade is full of cafes, bars, and restaurants.

It’s very popular among water sports enthusiasts. The clean, shallow water is ideal for families, especially those arriving with small children.

Spiaggia di Is Arutas

The beach is famous for its „rice grain” sand, which is actually made up of tiny, shiny quartz crystals. Its colorful shades – from white to pink and green – offer a wonderful sight.

The beach is quite secluded, and access is not easy. That’s why there’s no crowd here; it’s a perfect place for a peaceful rest.

Spiaggia de La Sciumara

Located in a bay in the northern part of the island, next to the village of Palau.

The several hundred meters long sandy-pebbly beach has crystal-clear and shallow water, so it can be safely recommended for children as well. It’s easily accessible on foot from the village.

Cala Brandinchi

The beach is located in a small bay, also known as „Sardinia’s little Tahiti”.

With the white sandy beach and the surrounding landscape, it really feels like you’re not in Italy.

Spiaggia di Punta Molentis

It got its name from a local pack animal, the molentis (donkey), which was once used by miners working in the surrounding areas.

An imposing rocky section rises next to the beach and, together with the turquoise, crystal-clear sea water, provides a great sight.

Although it’s a popular destination during the summer months, it’s not so crowded due to its relatively isolated location. It can be a good choice for those who don’t like crowds.

Castello di San Michele

One of Cagliari’s most significant medieval buildings rises on a hilltop.

The castle, built in the 12th century, was owned by the famous Spanish Carroz family from the 14th century. During this period, it served both as a fortress and noble residence. The castle is a massive, rectangular structure bordered by three towers. It’s a typical example of medieval fortifications with thick stone walls.

Today, it functions as a cultural and artistic center. Numerous temporary exhibitions, concerts, and events are held here. From the castle grounds and terrace, there is a breathtaking view of Cagliari, the Molentargius salt lakes, and the surrounding hills.

Cathedral (Cattedrale di Cagliari)

One of Sardinia’s most important religious and historical buildings is located in the historic Castello district.

It was built in the 13th century in Pisan style and became the episcopal seat of Sardinia in 1258. The cathedral’s facade bears the characteristics of Romanesque and Pisan styles. Made from carved stone, its detailed decoration is impressive, especially the geometric patterns and meticulously crafted carvings.

The interior is richly decorated with Baroque elements, including frescoes, gilded ornaments, and marble inlays. The main altar is particularly noteworthy, made in the 18th century from finely worked marble. Beneath the cathedral is a richly decorated crypt where the remains of many Sardinian martyrs are kept.

Bastione di Saint Remy

This historically important structure is located not far from the cathedral.

It was built in the late 1890s and early 1900s to connect the Castello district with the lower-lying Marina and Villanova districts. It was named after a viceroy who served in Sardinia, Baron de Saint-Remy. Originally used for military defense, it later took on a representative role and became a venue for important social events.

Built in classical and neoclassical style, it’s made of white and yellowish limestone, a material characteristic of Sardinia. The monumental triumphal arch is the central element, providing an elegant passage to the upper terrace. From the terrace, which is popular with both locals and tourists, there is a wonderful view of the city, the port, and the nearby Poetto beach.

Elephant Tower (Torre dell’Elefante)

Another important historical building in the Castello district.

The tower was erected in 1307 under the direction of Giovanni Capula, a famous Sardinian architect. It was built by the Republic of Pisa for defensive purposes to protect Cagliari from Aragonese invasions. Standing nearly 30 meters tall, it offers an impressive view of the city and the sea.

The tower gets its name from a small elephant statue on one of its sides. Despite its small size, the stone-carved figure has important symbolic significance.

Roman Amphitheater (Anfiteatro Romano di Cagliari)

One of Sardinia’s most important ancient monuments is located in the western part of the city, on the Buon Cammino hill.

It was built in the 2nd century AD when Cagliari flourished as an important city of the Roman Empire. Various events were held in the arena, including gladiator fights. The arena is oval-shaped, and the curved structure of the stands was made with the precision characteristic of Roman architecture.

In the Middle Ages, the site was used as a quarry, so a significant part of the original structure was destroyed. Thanks to excavations in the 19th and 20th centuries, it has been preserved for posterity.

Tuvixeddu Necropolis

One of Cagliari’s most unique sites is considered one of Europe’s largest surviving ancient necropolises.

It originally served as a burial place for the Carthaginians (Punics). The tombs were carved into rocks, and many were adorned with rich decorations and paintings. The Romans expanded it, adding their own burial customs and tomb structures.

There are hundreds of rock-carved tombs. Some of the tombs consist of larger chambers where the dead were placed with ceremonial objects and gifts.

Basilica of San Saturnino

One of the most significant monuments of early Christianity in Sardinia, dedicated to the city’s patron saint, Saint Saturninus.

Saturninus, a young Christian martyr, suffered martyrdom in Cagliari in the 3rd or 4th century. The basilica was built over his grave, which was considered a pilgrimage site by early Christians. In the Middle Ages, the basilica was an important center of local church life, but it fell into ruins in the 11th century. It was completely restored in the 20th century.

The architecture of the basilica shows a unique blend of early Christian and Byzantine styles. Inside, there are separate chapels where relics and religious artifacts are kept.

Sardinian Archaeological Museum (Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Cagliari)

Sardinia’s most important museum showcases the island’s thousands of years of history and archaeological treasures.

The museum’s exhibitions present Sardinia’s history in chronological order from prehistory to the Middle Ages:

• Nuragic culture (1800-500 BC): famous bronze statues depicting warriors, animals, and mythological figures can be viewed here. The exhibition showcases the island’s iconic stone structures, the nuraghi, which are impressive examples of Bronze Age civilization.
• Punic and Carthaginian period (8th-3rd century BC): the grave goods display rich Punic-era objects, including ceramics, jewelry, and sculptures.
• Roman period (3rd century BC – 5th century AD): Roman-era mosaics reflect the island’s wealth and Roman integration. Special items, such as accessories from Roman baths and statues, show everyday Roman culture.
• Byzantine and medieval Sardinia: relics of Byzantine Christianity, such as Christian icons and religious objects, are also found in the collection.

San Benedetto Market

Considered Cagliari’s famous and largest market, it’s one of the best places in the city to buy authentic Sardinian foods and products.

The market is particularly famous for its wide selection of fresh fish and seafood. Visitors can buy numerous local fish, crabs, shellfish, and other seafood, such as the famous bottarga (dried fish roe). Sardinian sweets, such as sebadas (cheese and honey-filled pastry) and amaretti (almond cookies), can also be found.

Monte Urpinu Park

One of Cagliari’s largest and most beautiful parks is located near the center.

One of the park’s biggest attractions is the breathtaking view of the Gulf of Cagliari and the surrounding landscape. It’s worth visiting for this reason.

Spiaggia del Poetto

Cagliari’s famous beach is one of the city’s most popular resorts and one of Sardinia’s most iconic beaches.

The 8-kilometer-long sandy beach is located in the southern part of the city, right near the city center, making it easily accessible. There are numerous restaurants, cafes, and bars alongside the beach.

„Devil’s Saddle” (Sella del Diavolo)

The famous natural formation is located near Cagliari, on the southern coast of the city.

The huge rock rises above the sea and offers a spectacular panorama of the surrounding landscape, including Cagliari, Poetto Beach, and the Gulf of Cagliari. It’s easily accessible on foot, and numerous hiking trails lead up to the rock.

It got its name from a local legend. According to the story, the devil sat on the rock on a horse, and its shape formed a rider’s saddle.

The history of the Royal Palace of Caserta

The palace was commissioned by King Charles III of Spain (who was also King of Naples and Sicily) in the mid-18th century. The king wanted the palace to compete with Europe’s largest royal residences, such as the Palace of Versailles, and to be worthy of the power and wealth of the Bourbon dynasty.

Construction began in 1752 under the direction of architect Luigi Vanvitelli, who was one of the most significant figures in Italian Baroque architecture. Although the palace was never completely finished during Vanvitelli’s lifetime, the work was continued thanks to his son, Carlo Vanvitelli.

Architecture and interior spaces

The Caserta Palace is impressive with its grandiose dimensions: 247 meters long, 5 stories high, and featuring more than 1,200 rooms, 34 staircases, and 1,742 windows. The interior is richly decorated: frescoes, statues, marble columns, and inlaid floors make the rooms exceptional.

• Throne Room: The central part of the palace is the ornate Throne Room, adorned with gilded decorations, wonderful frescoes, and enormous chandeliers. This room served as the venue for royal ceremonies and receptions.
• Chapel: The palace’s imposing royal chapel is reminiscent of the Versailles chapel and boasts fine Baroque decorations. Royal weddings and religious ceremonies were held here.
• Theater: The palace also includes a smaller theater designed for performances by the Bourbon court. The theater has wonderful acoustics and an elegant interior.

The Palace Park and Gardens

The park of the Caserta Palace is also impressive, extending in a seemingly endless axis behind the palace, covering about 120 hectares. The garden is decorated with fountains, artificial lakes, waterfalls, and statues that harmoniously blend with the surrounding hills.

The palace’s famous English garden was commissioned by King Ferdinand III’s wife, Maria Carolina. This English-style garden is enriched with exotic plants, artificial lakes, and romantic pavilions.

One of the central elements of the palace park is the huge waterfall located at the end of a long canal. Along the water’s path, fountains depict mythological scenes, such as the story of Diana and Actaeon.

The role of the Caserta Palace in history

The palace was one of the most important residences of the Bourbon dynasty and became the venue for numerous historical events. During World War II, the building was used as headquarters by the Allied forces, and the agreement on the surrender of German forces in Italy was signed here in 1945.

It is not only a special attraction for history and architecture enthusiasts but may also be familiar to film fans. It has been the filming location for numerous famous movies; for example, some scenes from Spaceballs and Star Wars were filmed here. I always say that there are two opinions about Naples. Either you like it or you can’t reconcile with the „chaos” in the city. I belong to the first group; I was captivated by the Neapolitan atmosphere during my first visit. In many places it’s littered, motorcyclists and drivers come from almost everywhere, constantly honking, but this is part of the city.

Friday

We traveled with the Wizz Air flight departing at 2 PM. From the airport, we took the Alibus to Garibaldi Square, from where our accommodation was a few hundred meters away. You can buy tickets for the Alibus in the airport arrival hall, but it’s also possible on the bus. It costs 5 euros.

In the evening, we planned a dinner and a short walk in the city center. Being Friday, there was a lot of hustle and bustle, Via Duomo and the surrounding streets were full. There are many small restaurants and street food stalls here; we sat down in a small pizzeria.

The image of the Napoli football team and, of course, Maradona can be seen at every turn on the streets. This is an integral part of the city.

Saturday

This day was about Naples’ downtown. Originally, the Amalfi Coast was in the plan, but since one day would have been too rushed, I postponed it for another occasion.

We went to the Archaeological Museum in the morning. On the way, we briefly visited Porta Capuana and Palazzo dello Spagnolo for a photo.

Entry to the museum was free for ladies on Women’s Day, so we took advantage of the fact that one of us saved 20 euros. 🙂 If I had to recommend one museum, I would definitely suggest this one. There are numerous wonderful ancient relics: statues, paintings, mosaics, various objects. We enjoyed every part of it.

From here, it’s not far to the castle rising above the city, which you can easily reach by funicular. We went up with the one departing from the Montesanto station. The ticket costs 1.30 euros, and there’s a great view of the surroundings.

The panorama of the city center from the castle forecourt is beautiful, but the real view is from the castle wall. The entrance fee is 5 euros and it’s well worth it. You can see all parts of Naples from here. Plus, Vesuvius and the islands of Ischia and Procida are also in the view. You can also go to the top by elevator, and there’s a café up there.

From the castle, we descended to the Spanish Quarter (Quartieri Spagnoli) via a winding staircase on the eastern side. Going uphill requires quite a bit of climbing, so if you don’t like climbing many stairs, definitely take the funicular up.

The Spanish Quarter is considered the most authentic Neapolitan area. Narrow streets, clothes hanging between houses, and a street corner dedicated to Maradona (Murale Diego Armando Maradona). There was a large crowd, with many restaurants and shops. We had a late lunch here.

In the southeastern part of the quarter stands the Galleria Umberto I, a covered domed hall. There is almost the same in Milan (Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II). It’s full of shops, an elegant hall.

Towards the seafront, we reach the central square of Naples. On Piazza del Plebiscito, there are two notable buildings: the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola and the Royal Palace (Palazzo Reale di Napoli).

We walked further along the main coastal road and immediately reached the castle. There are major construction works around Castel Nuovo, so photo opportunities are limited. But the view of the castle is impressive nonetheless.

It was starting to get dark, and there was one more sight left. We visited the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta on Via Duomo. Mass was just in progress, and we listened to it for a few minutes. It’s a very beautiful church with a huge interior space and frescoes.

Sunday

Since they forecast great weather for this day, we scheduled Pompeii and the Vesuvius tour for this day.

We bought tickets for Pompeii online on Thursday. You only need to select the day, and you can enter anytime within the entry period.

We went to Vesuvius by public transportation; several buses run daily from the Pompeii railway station to the highest parking lot (bus number 808). Tickets can be purchased on the bus or at the railway station. It’s worth buying a return ticket at the station, which costs 2.30 euros each way, compared to 3.30 euros on the bus.

Even from the way up, there’s a wonderful view of Naples. The bus reached the top in 45 minutes; we were up there at 9:20 AM. From the highest parking lot, you can reach the crater with a leisurely walk in about 20 minutes. You can walk around about half of it, and there are three snack bars along the way. The crater itself is a huge hole, but the greatest experience is that we can say we walked on a volcano’s caldera. 🙂

Going down, we easily caught the 11 o’clock bus, so by noon we were already sitting in a restaurant in Pompeii.

After lunch, we entered the „ruins city” of Pompeii through the entrance opposite the railway station. Next to the entrance, there’s a free luggage storage outside. You select an appropriate sized compartment, and the machine gives you a receipt with the code needed to open it.

The archaeological area is very large; you should devote at least 3-4 hours to it. We explored most parts, spending more than 3 hours. It’s advisable to choose a direction and proceed accordingly. Inside, there’s one café and toilets in several places.

You can take very beautiful pictures since on one side there’s Vesuvius, and on the other side, the high mountains of the Apennines rise. If you’re in Naples, don’t miss this place!

Monday

This day was left for the return journey, as the Wizz Air plane departed at 11:45 AM.

Around 9, we walked to the Centrale train station; the Alibus departs from the front entrance. Tickets can be purchased on the bus, exclusively by credit card. (Supposedly, you can also buy them at the train station, but I can’t say where.)
