Saxony is one of Germany’s most beautiful states, where magnificent medieval cities and stunning natural landscapes can both be found.

It is bordered to the west by Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt, to the north by Brandenburg, to the east by Poland, and to the south by the Czech Republic and Bavaria. The state has a rich history: it played a decisive role among the German principalities in the Middle Ages, and later gained political and cultural influence through the Saxon Electors and Kings. Today Saxony is particularly significant in the fields of innovation, mechanical engineering, microelectronics, and the automotive industry.

Best places in Saxony

Dresden

The capital of Saxony is often nicknamed the “Florence of the Elbe”, renowned for its breathtaking Baroque and Rococo architecture.

The Frauenkirche was left in ruins after World War II as a memorial, then reconsecrated in 2005. In the fountain-adorned courtyard of the Zwinger Palace, visitors can revel in Baroque splendor, while the world-famous painting collection awaits art lovers with Raphael’s Sistine Madonna.

The Neo-Renaissance façade of the Semperoper opera house is particularly spectacular when lit up at night. Walking along the Elbe promenade, a magnificent view of the river and the opposite bank opens up from the elevated Brühl Terrace. The Old Masters Picture Gallery and the Green Vault treasury are virtually essential stops for every culture enthusiast.

Dresden attractions

Best museums in Dresden

Saxon Switzerland National Park

The dramatic rock formations of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains form a unique landscape, and it is no coincidence that they are called Saxon Switzerland. Nature shaped these monumental sandstone towers over millions of years, and today hiking trails wind between them.

The Bastei Bridge arches 194 meters above the rocks and is perhaps the park’s most iconic sight. From the viewpoints, magnificent views open up over the Elbe valley and the surrounding mountains. Königstein Fortress is among the largest surviving mountain fortresses in Europe, and within its walls fascinating historical exhibitions await visitors.

Countless marked hiking trails can be found throughout the park, ranging from beginner to advanced. The Schrammsteine rock formation is a particularly popular destination among climbers. In spring and summer, wildflowers, and in autumn the golden-yellow and reddish hues of foliage make the landscape especially magical.

The Bastei Bridge is the most famous part of the park

Leipzig

The city of trade and culture has grown over the centuries into one of Europe’s most important commercial centers. The ensemble of buildings around the market square reflects the city’s civic pride and wealth. The city of Bach, Wagner and Mendelssohn still welcomes visitors today with a vibrant cultural life and youthful energy.

The Old Town Hall on the market square was built in the Renaissance style and now operates as a museum. St. Thomas Church is Bach’s former place of work, where the composer served as cantor for 27 years. St. Nicholas Church holds special significance, as this is where the peaceful Monday demonstrations began in 1989, which ultimately led to the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The city’s numerous arcades offer a unique shopping experience. Deep within the Mädler-Passage lies Auerbachs Keller, the wine cellar immortalized in Goethe’s Faust. The Leipzig Panometer presents the city’s past and present through gigantic panoramic images, while the Monument to the Battle of the Nations commemorates the battle of 1813.

The Old Town evokes the Middle Ages

Moritzburg Castle

The Baroque hunting residence of Augustus II, Elector of Saxony, rising from the middle of the water, looks as though it stepped straight out of a fairy-tale backdrop. The four round corner towers and the yellow-and-white façade are perfectly reflected in the surrounding lakes.

Inside the castle, a rich collection of furniture, porcelain, and hunting trophies is on display. The walls are adorned with special leather wallcoverings unique throughout Europe. The feather paneling of the Feather Room is an unparalleled work of art.

The park also contains the small Pheasant Castle, which hosts special exhibitions. The Moritzburg Festival regularly features classical music concerts and cultural events.

A beautiful castle in a beautiful setting

Meissen

At the foot of a hillside rising from the banks of the Elbe lies this small town with a medieval atmosphere, world-famous for its white gold: Meissen porcelain. The narrow alleyways, colorful houses, and cobblestone streets offer a true journey back in time. This settlement in the heart of a wine region is known not only for its porcelain but also for its excellent wines.

The ensemble of Meissen Castle and Cathedral rises above the city, and within its medieval walls a thousand years of history come to life. The cathedral is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, its interior breathtaking. From the castle, a magnificent view opens up over the city and the Elbe valley.

The Meissen Porcelain Manufactory has been operating since 1710 and was Europe’s first center of porcelain production. At the manufactory, visitors can gain insight into the secrets of the craft and admire master works. Numerous wineries in the town offer tastings where guests can discover the distinctive flavors of local Elbe Valley wines.

The city is dominated by the cathedral and the castle

Chemnitz

The former capital of Saxon industry has been experiencing a cultural renaissance in recent years. The city combines its modern face in a unique way with its industrial heritage and natural treasures. After decades as Karl-Marx-Stadt, Chemnitz is today a dynamically developing, reinventing city.

The city’s special attraction is a 291-million-year-old petrified forest, which showcases geological history. The trees of the primeval forest were preserved under volcanic ash and can today be admired in the Tietz Museum. The Kaßberg district is Germany’s largest contiguous Art Nouveau architectural complex, where strolling feels like stepping into a world from the past.

The city’s industrial heritage is visible in the old factory buildings, which have today been transformed into cultural centers. Modern Chemnitz, meanwhile, is all about contemporary art and innovation. The nearby Rabenstein Castle and the Baroque garden of Lichtenwalde Palace are excellent excursion destinations in the area.

The statue of Uncle Károly is still standing 🙂

Görlitz

This town on the German-Polish border has one of the best-preserved historic old towns in Germany. The war almost entirely bypassed it, so more than 4,000 listed buildings from various periods have survived.

On the Upper Market Square, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque buildings stand side by side. From the two towers of St. Peter and Paul Church, an unparalleled view opens up over the city and the surrounding landscape. Among the buildings of the Untermarkt, or Lower Market Square, the Late Gothic Town Hall and the Renaissance-style patrician houses stand out.

The Neisse River flows through the city, and crossing the bridge, visitors find themselves immediately in Poland, in Zgorzelec. Görlitz has become a popular filming location, with countless Hollywood productions choosing it as a backdrop. The Silesian Museum presents the region’s rich history and cultural heritage.

The war spared it, so the old atmosphere still prevails

Freiberg

Silver provided centuries of flourishing mining for this special town. The underground world is still visitable today and offers an exciting journey into the past. The wealth accumulated through mining is still visible in the city’s architecture and cultural treasures.

Freiberg Cathedral is one of the richest Late Gothic churches in Germany. Its unique pulpit, the Tulip Pulpit, is an unparalleled work of sculpture. The church’s organ was built by Gottfried Silbermann, whose organs are famous worldwide. The portal known as the Golden Gate immortalizes mining symbols and the city’s prosperity in carved stone.

In the underground mines, visitors can explore the old mine passages equipped with helmets and lamps. Terra Mineralia is one of the largest mineral collections in the world, where more than 3,500 minerals and gemstones can be seen. The city is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historical significance.

Silver mining brought prosperity to the region

Zwickau

In the birthplace of Robert Schumann, the traditions of Romantic music and automobile manufacturing intertwine in a unique way. The historic old town has retained its medieval and Renaissance character while the industrial past also remains present. The city’s cultural life is still vibrant today, with numerous festivals and events.

St. Mary’s Cathedral is a Late Gothic masterpiece, its towers visible from afar. The Schumann House Museum offers insight into the composer’s life and era. Around the Hauptmarkt, or Main Square, magnificent civic buildings stand as testimony to the city’s former wealth.

The August Horch Museum presents the history of automobile manufacturing, including the legendary story of the Trabant. The Priesterhäuser, or Priests’ Houses, are the best-preserved medieval residential complex in Germany.

It was the center of Trabant production

Bautzen

The cultural center of the Slavic-rooted Sorbian minority gives this small city a unique character. Bilingual signs, special traditions, and Sorbian-language culture are present everywhere. The towers and bastions of the old town built on the heights are visible from afar, and it is rightfully called the city of towers.

Much of the city walls still stand, and the promenade leads through the historic fortifications. The Reichenturm, or Rich Tower, leans slightly, and upon reaching its summit, the full panorama of the city and surrounding landscape unfolds. The peculiarity of St. Peter’s Cathedral is that it simultaneously serves both Catholic and Protestant communities.

At the Sorbian Museum, visitors can learn about the history and culture of this small people. At Easter, painted eggs and equestrian processions following Sorbian traditions can be seen. The Alte Wasserkunst, the old water tower, now functions as a museum and observation tower.

The center of a lesser-known minority

Bad Muskau Park

The landscape garden extending on both sides of the German-Polish border is the largest English-style park in Central Europe. The creation of Prince Pückler is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and represents the pinnacle of landscape and garden architecture. The park connects two countries, spanning rivers, streams, bridges, and lakes.

Across the 830-hectare area of Muskau Park, varied natural scenes alternate with one another. Vast meadows, dense forests, well-tended horticultural masterpieces, and romantic viewpoints make up this unique world. The park was designed to show a different face each season: in spring the blossoming, in summer the fresh green, in autumn the cavalcade of colors, and in winter the silence of snow-covered trees enchants the visitor.

Walking between the New Castle (of which only the ruins are visible) and the Old Castle, the path leads through magnificent bridges, romantic rock formations, and artistic ponds. It is also worth strolling on the Polish side of the park, as the very essence of its cross-border design is the natural connection of the two countries.

Rabenstein Castle

The small castle built on a rocky summit is one of the smallest yet most romantic fortresses in Saxony. The castle walls almost merge with the rock beneath them, as if they had grown directly from the stone. The narrow staircases, tight corridors, and old living quarters faithfully preserve the medieval castle life.

From the castle, magnificent views open up over the surrounding Erzgebirge region. Walking through the walls, every room evokes a different era: the knights’ hall, the chapel, and the kitchens have all retained their original character. In the castle courtyard, on summer evenings, events, jousting tournaments, and medieval markets are regularly held.

In the nearby village of Stein, it is worth visiting the palace with its Baroque park as well. The history of the castle dates back to the 12th century, and within its walls countless legends live on about knights and mysterious underground passages. The hiking trails in the area can be excellently combined with a visit to the castle.

Kriebstein Castle

The castle towering above the Zschopau River is perhaps the most picturesque and romantic fortress in Saxony. The building perched on the rocky summit looks as though it has stepped out of a painting: its towers, bastions, and position above the river offer a fairy-tale spectacle. Thanks to the proximity of the water, a unique microclimate has developed, resulting in distinctive flora.

In the medieval castle, original frescoes, Gothic furnishings, and captivating stories await visitors. The wall paintings of the castle chapel date from the 15th century and represent remarkable artistic value. From the great hall and the towers, breathtaking views open up over the river valley and the forested mountains.

Along the riverbank below the castle, pleasant walking paths lead around the entire fortress. In summer, concerts, medieval events, and jousting games bring the past to life. The area is also a popular destination for cyclists and hikers.

Erzgebirge Region

The Ore Mountains are a low mountain range stretching along the border of Saxony and the Czech Republic, serving as a skiing paradise in winter and a hiking paradise in summer.

The region is famous for its special traditions and craft culture: woodworking, the making of tinware, and the production of Christmas decorations have a centuries-old history. In the villages of the Erzgebirge, the famous wooden arch candles and incense smokers appear in every window at Christmas.

The region was dominated by mining for centuries, and the old mine towers and mining villages are still visible today. The village of Seiffen is the center of toy and Christmas decoration production, where visitors can observe the practice of this ancient craft in the workshops. The Schwebebahn aerial tramway in Oberwiesenthal has been carrying skiers to the mountaintop for decades.

The Fichtelberg is Saxony’s highest point at 1,215 meters, and in winter it welcomes sports enthusiasts with excellent ski slopes. The Toy Museum in Seiffen has an impressive collection of wooden toys, while the hiking trails in the area are wonderful in every season. In December, the entire region radiates an almost magical atmosphere with its Christmas markets and traditional celebrations.

Frankfurt am Main is famous for its skyscrapers, which house European financial institutions’ headquarters, while its old town radiates medieval atmosphere.

Located in the state of Hesse of Germany, it is known worldwide as the country’s financial center. Frankfurt, situated in the heart of the Rhine region, is also the birthplace of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, giving the city special literary significance alongside its cultural richness, museums, and musical traditions.

Römerberg Square

The historic center is the city’s most photographed and best-known location.

Medieval-atmosphere reconstructed half-timbered houses line the square, which were rebuilt after World War II based on original plans. The square’s name has been in use since the 15th century, when Roman emperor coronation ceremonies were held here.

The area is covered with hexagonal paving stones, with the historic Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen (Fountain of Justice) standing in the center, inaugurated in 1543. The statue of Justitia on top of the fountain is a symbol of Frankfurt’s free imperial city status. Among the buildings surrounding the square is the famous Zur Goldenen Waage house, one of the most beautiful half-timbered structures.

For centuries, it served as a venue for markets and celebrations, and today the world-famous Frankfurt Christmas market is held here at Christmas time. The square’s atmosphere becomes particularly magical in the evening, when the illumination of historic buildings creates a romantic mood.

Römer City Hall

It has served as Frankfurt’s historic city hall for more than 600 years and is the most imposing building on Römerberg Square.

The building complex was originally three medieval merchant houses, which the city purchased in 1405 to serve as city hall. The characteristic stepped facade and three towers are an outstanding example of Frankfurt architecture.

The building’s most famous room is the Kaisersaal (Imperial Hall), where a total of 10 Roman emperors and 42 German kings held coronation banquets between 1612 and 1792. The hall’s walls are decorated with portraits of 52 German emperors and kings, 19 of which are original paintings. Today, the hall still hosts representative events and can be visited by tourists.

The Römer’s specialty is its iconic balcony, from which the German national football team and Eintracht Frankfurt players celebrated their victories. The building’s ground floor houses the wedding hall, where civil marriages still take place today, while the basement contains remains of medieval wine cellars.

Frankfurt Cathedral (Kaiserdom St. Bartholomäus)

Frankfurt’s most significant religious building was built in Gothic style in the 14th-15th centuries.

Although it was never a bishop’s cathedral, it is still called a cathedral because Roman-German kings were elected here between 1356 and 1792, and 10 emperor coronations were held within it. The building’s 95-meter tower was the city’s highest point for centuries.

Construction of the cathedral began around 1250, but it only achieved its current form in the 15th century. Inside the church is the famous Marienschnitzaltar (Mary Altar) from 1434, as well as Hans Backoffen’s masterpiece, the Kreuztragung relief from 1509.

The church was severely damaged during World War II, but reconstruction successfully restored its original beauty. The staircase leading to the cathedral tower has 328 steps, and from the top, there is an unparalleled panorama of the city and the Main River.

Several emperors were crowned here

St. Paul’s Church (Paulskirche)

One of Frankfurt’s most important historic buildings, known worldwide as the cradle of German democracy.

The classicist church built between 1789 and 1833 is unique in German church architecture with its circular floor plan and dome. The building’s most important historical moment was 1848-49, when the first freely elected German parliament, the Frankfurt National Assembly, convened here.

The church no longer serves religious purposes but has been converted into a national memorial site. Inside, an exhibition presents the development of German democratic traditions and the events of the 1848 revolution. The walls are decorated with frescoes and memorial plaques depicting the history of German unity and freedom. The building’s specialty is the circular interior space, which provided ideal acoustic conditions for the sitting parliament.

Old Opera (Alte Oper)

Frankfurt’s most elegant cultural building, which opened in 1880 modeled after Berlin’s Staatsoper.

The opera house built in Italian Renaissance style bears the inscription „Dem Wahren, Schönen, Guten” (To the True, Beautiful, Good) on its facade, expressing commitment to the arts. The building was designed by Richard Lucae.

The building was severely damaged during World War II and only reopened in 1981, now as a concert and congress center. Today, the world’s leading symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, and soloists perform here. The building has excellent acoustics, and its three different-sized halls enable a varied program offering.

Its specialty is the magnificent neo-Renaissance interior, decorated with golden ornaments and frescoes. The main hall can accommodate 2,450 people, while the smaller Mozart Hall hosts chamber music programs. The square in front of the building is often the venue for outdoor concerts and cultural events, with particularly lively cultural life in summer.

Today it functions as a cultural center

Main Tower

The Main Tower is Frankfurt’s second tallest skyscraper at 200 meters high and the only tower in the city with an observation deck open to visitors.

The glass-steel structure completed in 1999 houses the headquarters of Commerzbank and Helaba Bank, but its 56th floor features a public observation deck for tourists. The building was designed by Norman Foster and Arata Isozaki.

From the tower, there is a 360-degree panorama of Frankfurt’s city center, the Main River, and in good visibility conditions, you can see as far as the Taunus Mountains. The view is particularly stunning at sunset. In the evening, special LED lighting makes the tower visible, making it a defining element of Frankfurt’s nightscape.

Hauptwache

One of Frankfurt’s most famous squares and meeting points, located in the heart of the city center.

It gets its name from the baroque-style building standing here, which was built around 1730 as a guard center and later used as a prison and military building. Today it houses a café, offering a unique blend of historical atmosphere and modern city life.

The Hauptwache area is one of Frankfurt’s busiest transportation hubs: it houses one of the city’s largest metro and S-Bahn stations, connecting different city districts and the airport.

The old house among the new buildings is interesting

Zeil Shopping Street

Frankfurt’s main street and one of Germany’s most densely visited shopping streets, attracting approximately 13 million shoppers annually.

The 1.2-kilometer-long pedestrian zone runs from Hauptwache Square to Konstablerwache and is considered the city’s commercial heart. The street’s name refers to the area adjacent to the medieval city wall, where the city’s defense system once ran.

Along the Zeil is the MyZeil shopping center with its futuristic glass facade and spiral architecture. The building complex houses more than 100 shops, restaurants, and services.

The street’s specialty is the Katharinenkirche, a 14th-century Gothic church that maintains its historical atmosphere amid the modern shopping crowds. The Zeil area remains lively in the evening, with numerous restaurants, cafés, and entertainment venues operating here.

Iron Bridge (Eiserner Steg)

One of Frankfurt’s most romantic locations is the pedestrian bridge built in 1869, which connects the city center with the Sachsenhausen district across the Main River.

The 170-meter-long iron structure is a masterpiece of 19th-century industrial architecture and one of the city’s most iconic buildings. Originally called Kaiser-Wilhelm-Brücke, but the popular name stuck. Its specialty is the thousands of „love locks” attached by loving couples, which has become a European tradition.

From the middle of the bridge, there is a beautiful view of Frankfurt’s city center and the cathedral, especially at sunset. Besides its historical significance, it also has a practical transportation function: it’s the easiest passage between Römerberg Square and the Sachsenhausen museum district.

There are lots of locks hanging on the side

Palmengarten

Frankfurt’s largest botanical garden opened in 1871 and spans 22 hectares.

The institution, renowned among European botanical gardens, preserves more than 13,000 different plant species, many of which are of tropical and subtropical origin. The garden’s creator was landscape architect Heinrich Siesmayer, who learned the profession from the designer of Vienna’s Schönbrunn garden.

At the heart of the garden is the Tropicarium, an impressive glass palace complex that imitates different climate zones. The Tropicarium consists of several pavilions: it houses the palm house, cactus house, as well as tropical rainforest and desert plant houses. The outdoor sections feature a rose garden, Japanese garden, and medicinal plant garden.

The garden is open year-round but offers its most spectacular experience in spring and summer when outdoor plants are in bloom. In summer, outdoor concerts are held at the stage located in the central part of the garden.

Zoo

Opened in 1858, it is Germany’s second oldest zoo institution. More than 4,500 animals from 450 different species live on the 11-hectare area, including many endangered species.

The institution’s most interesting part is the Exotarium, a three-story building that houses aquatic and terrestrial animals. It contains one of Europe’s largest aquarium collections, where sharks, rays, and numerous tropical fish can be seen. The Crocodile Hall houses Nile crocodiles and giant tortoises, while the Gila Hall presents the world of reptiles and amphibians.

The zoo’s pride is the ape house, where multi-generational families of great apes can be observed in natural environments. The penguin house imitates Antarctic environment, where visitors can observe penguins’ underwater movement through glass-walled tunnels.

Best museums in Frankfurt

Städel Museum

It belongs to Germany’s most significant art museums, which opened in 1815 from banker Johann Friedrich Städel’s foundation donation.

The museum’s collection encompasses 700 years of European painting from the Middle Ages to the present day, including numerous world-class masterpieces. The building itself is a monument: built in 1878 in neo-Renaissance style.

The core of the collection consists of works by German and Flemish old masters, including works by Albrecht Dürer, Hans Holbein, and Lucas Cranach. The museum’s impressionist section is outstanding: it displays paintings by Renoir, Monet, Degas, and Cézanne. The modern collection preserves works by Picasso, Max Beckmann, and Francis Bacon.

The museum’s specialty is the underground contemporary wing opened in 2012, which presents 21st-century art in galleries lit with natural light. The Städel Garden, a garden created on the building’s roof, offers a unique art experience.

All information can be found here!

Goethe House

Frankfurt’s most important literary memorial site, where Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born on August 28, 1749, and spent his childhood and youth.

The four-story bourgeois house at Grosser Hirschgraben 23 is a typical example of an 18th-century Frankfurt patrician residence, which can be visited with the poet’s family’s original furniture and objects.

On the ground floor of the house is the family’s business office and kitchen, where the original tiled stove and old kitchen utensils can be seen. The first floor houses the representative salons, where young Goethe often met with literary and artistic personalities. On the second floor is Goethe’s room, where he wrote parts of „Götz von Berlichingen” and „The Sorrows of Young Werther”.

On the third floor operates a puppet theater, where child Goethe organized his own puppet shows, which later influenced his literary work. The Goethe Museum belonging to the house presents the poet’s life work and era, as well as preserves 18th-19th century paintings and documents.

All information can be found here!

Senckenberg Natural History Museum

Germany’s second largest natural history museum, which opened in 1907 and has one of the world’s most significant paleontological collections.

The museum’s founder was physician and naturalist Johann Christian Senckenberg, who began building his natural science collection in the 18th century. The institution is particularly famous for its dinosaur collection and anthropological section.

Its greatest pride is the dinosaur hall, where original fossils and reconstructions can be seen. It houses a copy of the world’s largest Triceratops skeleton, as well as ichthyosaurus and plesiosaurus remains tens of millions of years old. The section presenting the evolutionary development of mammals particularly details the development history of early humans with a copy of Lucy’s skeleton.

The museum’s geological collection preserves thousands of minerals, meteorite fragments, and semi-precious stones, including one of the largest meteor pieces found on Earth. The biodiversity section presents the wildlife of different continents in lifelike dioramas. In the interactive sections, visitors can personally study fossils and minerals.

All information can be found here!

Historical Museum

The institution presenting the city’s past and present opened its doors in 2017 in completely renovated form on Römerberg Square.

The museum building combines the historical environment with modern architectural solutions: the new wing’s glass-concrete structure contrasts with the medieval urban environment. The institution presents the history of Frankfurt from Roman times to the present day.

Its permanent exhibition titled „Frankfurt einst?” (Frankfurt Once Upon a Time?) processes the city’s development in chronological order. Medieval finds, guild objects, documents from the free imperial city era, and memories of 19th-20th century industrialization can be seen here. A separate section deals with the history of Frankfurt becoming a financial center and the formation of the modern banking sector.

The museum’s specialty is the Schneekugel (snow globe) collection, which consists of several thousand pieces and is the world’s largest such collection.

All information can be found here!

Frankfurt weather: when is the best time to visit?

Frankfurt’s climate is temperate continental, characterized by four seasons and relatively even precipitation distribution. The city lies in the protected valley of the Rhine region, resulting in milder weather conditions compared to other parts of the country.

Spring (March-May):

Spring gradually warms up, with daytime temperatures around 10-15°C expected from mid-March. April-May are often characterized by rainy weather, but nature’s awakening offers particularly beautiful sights in the Palmengarten botanical garden and city parks. This period is ideal for museum visits and city walks.

Summer (June-August):

During summer months, temperatures range between 20-25°C, but values above 30°C are not uncommon. July-August are the warmest, when afternoon downpours are frequent. Summer is an excellent time for outdoor programs, walks along the Main, and city festivals. Outdoor concerts in front of the Alte Oper are particularly popular.

Autumn (September-November):

Autumn often begins with long-lasting, sunny periods in September, when temperatures around 18-22°C can still be expected. October is already cooler, and in November, fog and drizzling rain are frequent. Autumn colors in city parks and the Palmengarten garden are particularly beautiful.

Winter (December-February):

Winter months are cool, with daytime temperatures between 2-8°C. Snow is not very frequent but does occur, especially in January-February. December is particularly atmospheric due to the world-famous Frankfurt Christmas market, which welcomes visitors on Römerberg Square.

Best time to travel:

The most ideal period for visiting Frankfurt is from late April to early October, when the weather is most pleasant and most outdoor programs are available. May-June and September are particularly recommended because temperatures are pleasant (18-23°C), there is less precipitation, and tourist crowds are also smaller. December is also a popular period due to the Christmas market, although the weather can be cool and often rainy. Summer months (July-August), while warm, can sometimes be too hot for sightseeing, plus this is peak season when accommodation prices are also higher.

Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Württemberg, is famous not only for its automotive industry but also for its rich historical heritage and cultural offerings.

Stuttgart has become a significant cultural and economic center over the centuries. The city offers a unique combination: on one hand, it’s the home of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, and on the other hand, it boasts beautiful baroque and renaissance architectural monuments. With more than 600,000 inhabitants, it’s Germany’s sixth-largest city.

New Palace

One of Stuttgart’s most impressive baroque buildings located in the heart of the city’s historic center.

The palace was built between 1746 and 1807 on the orders of Duke Charles Eugene III. The building served as the residence of the Württemberg rulers and today houses the government and parliament of Baden-Württemberg state. The palace facade was created in stunning baroque style with rich decorations and sculptures depicting significant figures from the state’s history.

The palace’s interior spaces received magnificent decoration, including brilliant reception halls adorned with crystal chandeliers and antique furniture. During visits, visitors can explore the representative halls where period paintings and artifacts showcase the life of the Württemberg court. The square in front of the palace is often the venue for cultural events and celebrations, especially during the Christmas market, when the baroque architecture gains an even more magical atmosphere.

The environment around the building is also special: Schlossplatz square lends a European atmosphere to the city center, while the nearby buildings form a harmonious unity with the New Palace. The parks and fountains surrounding the palace provide an excellent place for rest and strolling.

Castle Garden

One of the largest and most beautiful green areas in the heart of Stuttgart, a beloved resting place for both city residents and tourists.

The Schlossgarten spreads over nearly 600 hectares and is divided into three parts: the Lower, Middle, and Upper Gardens. The park’s history dates back to the 18th century when it was designed as a representative garden for the Württemberg dukes. The original baroque design was later transformed into English landscape garden style, which still defines the area’s atmosphere today.

Among the most beautiful parts of the garden are the lakes, around which mill wheels and small bridges make the environment even more romantic. Along the park’s walkways, numerous statues and monuments can be found that pay tribute to significant personalities of Stuttgart and Baden-Württemberg. The area also houses the Opera House and the Planetarium.

Old Palace

One of the oldest and most significant buildings in Stuttgart’s historic center, the most important witness to the city’s medieval past.

The Old Palace was originally built in the 10th century and served as the residence of Württemberg counts and dukes for centuries. The building was rebuilt several times throughout the centuries, so in its current form, renaissance and baroque style elements blend together. The palace’s exterior facade features massive stone walls and towers that still reflect the character of the medieval fortress.

In the palace’s inner courtyard is the famous Dürer fresco, one of the outstanding works of German renaissance art. The building’s historical significance is extraordinary, as many important political decisions that influenced the entire history of Germany were made here. The palace also functions as a museum where visitors can learn about the history of the Württemberg ruling house and local cultural traditions.

Located opposite the New Palace

Königstraße

Stuttgart’s longest pedestrian street stretching from the main railway station to Schlossplatz square.

The 1.2-kilometer-long street was converted to a traffic-free zone in 1977, making Stuttgart one of the first German cities to create such a large-scale pedestrian area. Along Königstraße, numerous department stores, boutiques, cafes, and restaurants can be found.

The street’s architecture presents a varied picture: alongside traditional German urban buildings, modern commercial buildings and office complexes can also be found. Along the street, numerous street artists and performers entertain passersby, lending a European metropolitan atmosphere to the area.

The pedestrian street offers not only shopping opportunities but is also culturally significant. Several historic buildings are located here, including churches and museums that showcase Stuttgart’s rich cultural heritage.

Stiftskirche

Stuttgart’s oldest and most significant religious building, a defining element of the cityscape with its towers.

The church was founded in the 12th century and was continuously expanded and beautified over the centuries. The Gothic-style building’s two towers are visible from far above the city and have become one of Stuttgart’s most recognizable symbols. The church’s interior features stunning Gothic vaulting and colorful stained glass windows that create a special atmosphere during services and concerts.

The building’s historical significance is outstanding, as it contains the burial sites of several Württemberg rulers, including Duke Ulrich, who played a significant role in spreading the Reformation in the region. The museum in the church’s crypt presents Stuttgart’s religious and cultural history, as well as archaeological finds documenting the various phases of the church’s construction.

The environment around Stiftskirche is also special: the church, located between Stiftstraße and the market square, is surrounded by historic buildings that evoke the atmosphere of Stuttgart’s old town. The church regularly hosts classical music concerts and cultural events.

One of the most important churches in the city

TV Tower

Stuttgart’s and the world’s first television tower, which represented a revolutionary architectural solution in the history of television broadcasting.

The Fernsehturm Stuttgart was built in 1955 and stands 216 meters high on one of the hills surrounding the city. The tower’s designer was Fritz Leonhardt, who applied such an innovative solution that later served as an example worldwide for the construction of other television towers. The reinforced concrete structure tower, with its slender, elegant form, is not only functional but also an outstanding creation from an aesthetic standpoint.

The observation deck at the top of the tower offers a breathtaking panorama of Stuttgart city and the surrounding Swabian Hills. On clear days, you can see as far as 40 kilometers to the Black Forest landscape. Below the observation deck, a rotating restaurant also operates where guests can enjoy gourmet food while experiencing a 360-degree view.

Wonderful view from the top

Weissenhofsiedlung

One of the most significant experimental areas of modern architecture, an outstanding example of the progressive architectural movement of the 1920s.

The housing estate was created in 1927 by the Deutscher Werkbund organization as part of the „Housing” exhibition. The world’s most renowned architects participated in the project, including Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius, and Peter Behrens. The goal was to demonstrate how modern, functional, and affordable housing could be designed to meet the needs of the 20th century.

Of the estate’s 21 houses, 11 remain today, two of which are Le Corbusier’s work. These buildings represented revolutionary innovation: flat roofs, large window surfaces, clean lines, and functional floor plans characterized them.

Today the area is a UNESCO World Heritage candidate and functions as a museum. Visitors can learn about the history of modern architecture and gain insight into the development of 20th-century housing culture.

Killesberg

One of Stuttgart’s most popular recreational areas.

It spreads over 50 hectares in the northern part of the city and was developed in 1939 as part of the Reichsgartenschau. The park’s specialty is that it takes advantage of natural topographical conditions by being arranged on terraces, so its stepped design provides varied viewpoints and beautiful panoramas of Stuttgart city. The area contains several special gardens, including a rose garden, rock garden, and a small lake around which pleasant walking paths have been created.

One of the park’s main attractions is the Killesberg Tower, a 40-meter-high observation tower that offers a unique architectural experience with its spiral staircase and modern design. From the top of the tower, a stunning 360-degree panorama unfolds of Stuttgart city and the surrounding landscape. The park also features a narrow-gauge railway that is particularly popular with children and connects different parts of the park.

Killesberg regularly hosts cultural events, concerts, and exhibitions. There is a large outdoor stage in the park area where numerous musical and theatrical performances are held in summer.

Rosensteinpark

Stuttgart’s largest park impresses visitors with both its natural beauty and rich history.

The 100-hectare park was created in the early 19th century when it was designed in English landscape garden style on the orders of King William I of Württemberg. The park’s namesake is Rosenstein Castle, which the king had built in memory of his wife, Catherine, Grand Duchess of Russia. The castle now houses the Stuttgart Natural History Museum and is one of the park’s main attractions with its impressive classicist architecture.

The park contains the Wilhelma Zoo and Botanical Garden, which is one of Europe’s most beautiful zoos. The area’s original layout still reflects 19th-century landscape garden traditions: winding walkways, carefully maintained lawn areas, groves of native tree species, and natural watercourses.

Chinese Garden

A symbol of friendship between Stuttgart and its sister city Changchun, showcasing authentic Chinese garden culture in Europe.

The garden was opened in 1993, and its design followed traditional Chinese architectural and garden design principles. During the project, Chinese specialists worked together with Stuttgart colleagues to create a truly authentic experience. The garden area contains pagodas, traditional Chinese bridges, tea houses, and a carefully maintained bonsai collection, all showcasing different aspects of Chinese culture.

The garden’s philosophical foundation rests on feng shui principles: every element, from the placement of rocks to the flow of water, forms a carefully planned harmony. Visitors can admire traditional Chinese architectural style, colorful roof tiles, finely carved wooden decorations, and examples of calligraphy art. Around the lake in the garden, plants that bloom in different seasons ensure that different beauty unfolds before visitors in every season.

Wilhelma Zoo

One of Europe’s most beautiful and diverse animal parks, functioning simultaneously as a zoo and botanical garden.

The Wilhelma was originally designed as King William I of Württemberg’s summer residence in 1846. The buildings’ exotic architecture, the Moorish arches, mosaics, and decorated columns found everywhere still maintain their special atmosphere today. The zoo’s area is 30 hectares and is home to more than 10,000 animals from around the world, including rare species that are barely visible elsewhere.

One of the zoo’s most special parts is the complex of huge greenhouses where exotic animals live among tropical and subtropical plants. The Amazon greenhouse creates a rainforest atmosphere where visitors can walk among colorful parrots, butterflies, and monkeys. The snake house and aquarium section are also outstanding, where visitors can become acquainted with marine and freshwater wildlife, as well as dangerous and exotic reptiles.

Mercedes-Benz Museum

One of the world’s most modern and impressive automotive museums showcasing the history of the Mercedes-Benz brand and the automotive industry.

The museum was opened in 2006, and its futuristic architecture immediately became one of Stuttgart’s most recognizable symbols. On the museum’s nine floors, 160 vehicles can be found, including the first automobile, the Benz Patent-Motorwagen from 1886, as well as the latest electric and hybrid models.

The exhibition presents not only cars but also the entire history of transportation and technological development. Visitors can learn about the pioneering work of Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler, who laid the foundation for the modern automotive industry. The museum brings history to life with interactive elements, simulations, and audiovisual technology. The Formula 1 cars are particularly impressive, representing Mercedes-Benz’s sports car traditions.

The museum building itself is also a technical marvel: the double spiral system allows visitors to walk around the entire exhibition without having to return on the same path. From the top of the building, there is a beautiful view of Stuttgart city.

Porsche Museum

The museum showcasing the history of the legendary German sports car brand is another pride of Stuttgart’s automotive heritage.

The museum was opened in 2009 in the immediate vicinity of the Porsche factory. The building’s modern, minimalist design perfectly reflects the Porsche brand’s values: elegance, precision, and innovation. The museum area contains more than 80 cars, including the legendary Porsche 356, various versions of the 911 model, and winning cars from Le Mans races.

The exhibition presents the life and work of Ferdinand Porsche, who not only founded the Porsche brand but also designed revolutionary vehicles for other car manufacturers earlier. The museum offers interactive experiences: visitors can drive simulators that try to recreate the driving experience of Porsche sports cars. A separate section is dedicated to Porsche motorsport history, where everything from Formula 1 cars to rally cars can be found.

The Porsche Museum’s specialty is that it’s closely connected to the factory: visitors can also participate in factory tours where they can watch live how the world-famous sports cars are made.

Staatsgalerie

Stuttgart’s most significant art museum boasts an unparalleled collection of classical and modern art.

The museum opened in 1843 and has been continuously expanding since then. The building consists of two parts: the classical 19th-century part and the postmodern wing designed by James Stirling. The collection encompasses the history of European painting and sculpture from the 14th century to the present day, with particular attention to German and Austrian artists.

One of the museum’s greatest prides is its collection of German Expressionism and 20th-century art. Here you can find numerous works by Max Beckmann, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and Emil Nolde, as well as works by Picasso, Matisse, and other international masters. In the classical section, everything from medieval altarpieces through Renaissance portraits to Baroque paintings can be found, representing the great periods of European art history.

Linden Museum

Stuttgart’s ethnological museum, with its presentation of different cultures from around the world, is one of Germany’s most important ethnographic collections.

The museum was founded in 1911 and since then has preserved a collection of objects showcasing the cultures of all continents of the world. The museum is named after Count Karl Graf von Linden, who played a significant role in developing the collection. The exhibitions present the lifestyles, religious customs, art, and traditions of the peoples of Africa, Asia, America, Oceania, and Europe.

One of the most impressive sections is the presentation of American Indian cultures, where original totem poles, traditional clothing, and ritual objects can be seen. The Asian section contains Buddhist and Hindu artistic creations, as well as Japanese samurai armor and swords. The African collection features special tribal masks, carved sculptures, and traditional musical instruments.

Stuttgart weather: when is the best time to visit?

Stuttgart has an oceanic climate that results in mild winters and warm summers, with continental influences.

Spring (March-May):

Spring in Stuttgart brings pleasant and gradually warming weather. The average temperature ranges between 8-18°C, and precipitation is moderate. At the end of April and in May, the city’s parks and gardens bloom, with Rosensteinpark and Killesberg offering particularly beautiful sights. This period is excellent for sightseeing and outdoor programs.

Summer (June-August):

During summer months, Stuttgart has warm and relatively sunny weather. The average temperature ranges between 15-25°C, although it can sometimes rise above 30°C. Precipitation is quite frequent in summer too, but usually appears in the form of short showers. This is the ideal time for outdoor programs, park visits, and exploring the surrounding regions.

Autumn (September-November):

Autumn is one of Stuttgart’s most beautiful seasons. The weather is still pleasant, with average temperatures ranging between 10-20°C in September and October. Precipitation increases, but the autumn foliage makes the city’s parks and surroundings particularly beautiful. November is already cooler but still suitable for sightseeing.

Winter (December-February):

Stuttgart’s winter is mild, with average temperatures ranging between 0-8°C. Snowfall occurs but is not frequent and generally not lasting. The winter months are somewhat rainy, but due to museums and indoor attractions, this period can also be suitable for visiting, especially during the Christmas markets.

Best time to visit:

For visiting Stuttgart, the most ideal period is late spring and early autumn (May-June and September-October), when the weather is pleasant, precipitation levels are lower, and the city’s natural beauty can be best enjoyed.

Bavaria is one of Germany’s most beautiful states, where the Alps, crystal-clear mountain lakes, and medieval towns create a wonderful atmosphere.

Bavaria is Germany’s largest federal state, which attracts visitors from all over the world with its rich historical heritage, natural beauty, and cultural treasures. The region is famous for the castles of the Wittelsbach dynasty, medieval towns, and breathtaking Alpine landscapes.

Munich

Bavaria’s capital and Germany’s third-largest city, which harmoniously combines traditional Bavarian culture with modern metropolitan life.

At the heart of the city lies Marienplatz, boasting masterpieces of medieval and baroque architecture, while the New Town Hall captivates visitors’ attention daily with its glockenspiel. The city’s cultural offerings are unparalleled: world-class museums, including the German Museum and the Pinakothek museum complex, as well as the Bavarian State Opera all reflect Munich’s intellectual wealth.

The Englischer Garten, the city’s green oasis, is larger than New York’s Central Park and features Europe’s only urban surfing spot on the Eisbach river as a special attraction. Due to the proximity of the nearby Alps, Munich is an excellent starting point for mountain hiking and skiing.

Munich is home to Oktoberfest, the world’s largest beer festival, which attracts millions of visitors every year. The city’s beer gardens, especially the Hofbräuhaus and Biergarten am Chinesischen Turm, offer an authentic Bavarian atmosphere.

Neuschwanstein Castle

King Ludwig II of Bavaria’s dream castle near Hohenschwangau, which is one of the world’s most photographed buildings and the inspiration for Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. The 19th-century romantic castle stands on a rocky cliff above the Pollat Gorge, and with its fairy-tale appearance, it attracts more than one million visitors annually.

Construction of the castle began in 1869, but due to King Ludwig II’s death in 1886, it was never completely finished. Of the 200 rooms, only 15 were completed, but their magnificent furnishings and paintings depicting motifs from Wagner’s operas provide a stunning spectacle. The throne room is particularly impressive, with its Byzantine-style mosaic floor and starry sky decorating the ceiling.

Visiting the castle requires advance ticket purchase, and during the 35-minute guided tour, visitors can gain insight into the peculiar world of the „fairy tale king”. The landscape surrounding the castle offers beautiful hiking opportunities, and the most beautiful view of the castle opens from the nearby Marienbrücke bridge. In winter, the snow-covered castle shines in an even more magical atmosphere.

Nuremberg

Bavaria’s second-largest city was one of the most important centers of the Holy Roman Empire and still retains its medieval charm today. The old town surrounded by city walls has remained almost completely intact, and with the Kaiserburg castle at its top, it forms one of Europe’s most beautiful medieval cityscapes.

The city is of outstanding historical significance, as it hosted the imperial diets of the Holy Roman Empire, and later became the site of the Nuremberg Laws and the war crimes trials. The Documentation Center and the Nuremberg Trials Memorial now serve educational and commemorative functions.

Nuremberg is famous for its traditional Christmas market, the Christkindlmarkt, which is one of the oldest and most atmospheric in Europe. The city’s culinary specialties include the famous Nuremberg sausages, Lebkuchen gingerbread, and wines. The craftsmen’s workshops in the narrow streets of the old town still preserve the secrets of traditional crafts today.

Nuremberg attractions

Königssee

Germany’s deepest and clearest lake, located in Berchtesgaden National Park.

The 8-kilometer-long and 1.2-kilometer-wide lake at the foot of the Watzmann mountain range is a remnant of the Ice Age, and due to its crystal-clear water, it is often called the „Bavarian fjord”.

Only environmentally friendly electric boats operate on the lake, which transport visitors to the famous St. Bartholomew’s Chapel. This tradition has continued since 1909 for the protection of nature. During the journey, the boatmen demonstrate the lake’s famous echo: they play trumpets at the steep rock faces, and the sound, reflected multiple times, provides a magical acoustic experience.

The chapel was built in honor of the patron saint of fishermen. The picturesque white building with red onion domes provides an iconic sight against the surrounding Alpine panorama. Numerous hiking trails lead around the lake, including to the Obersee, where a small waterfall can also be found.

Bamberg

The medieval city on the banks of the Regnitz River, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage, is one of Europe’s best-preserved historic city centers. The city was built on seven hills, like Rome, and boasts masterpieces of imperial, ecclesiastical, and civic architecture.

The city’s symbol is Bamberg Cathedral, whose four towers can be seen from far away. The cathedral is famous for the Bamberg Horseman, a 13th-century stone sculpture masterpiece that is one of the finest works of medieval sculpture. The nearby Old Town Hall stands on an artificial island in the middle of the Regnitz River and is one of Bavaria’s most photographed buildings.

It’s famous for its brewing traditions, especially smoked beer (Rauchbier), which has earned the city renown with its unique flavor profile. Numerous traditional breweries and restaurants can be found in the narrow streets of the historic downtown. The city’s „Little Venice” district creates a romantic atmosphere with riverside fishermen’s houses, while from the Michaelsberg monastery, a beautiful panorama opens over the entire city.

The most photographed building in the city

Linderhof Palace

King Ludwig II of Bavaria’s smallest but most intimate castle near Ettal, which was the only one the king managed to complete during his lifetime. The Rococo-style castle was created following the model of French Versailles.

The castle’s interior boasts magnificent Rococo decoration, with the Hall of Mirrors being particularly stunning, where the king played chess and read. The dining room features the so-called „magic table” which rose from the ground serving food so that the king wouldn’t have to meet with servants. The bedroom is covered with gold and blue brocade, and the ceiling paintings depict French King Louis XIV.

Its park is a special work of garden art that combines French formal and English landscape styles. Its greatest attraction is the Venus Grotto, an artificial cave inspired by the first act of Wagner’s opera Tannhäuser. The grotto contains a small lake with colored lighting, and King Ludwig II’s swan-shaped boat once stood here.

Regensburg

The historic city on the banks of the Danube was one of medieval Germany’s richest commercial centers and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city’s almost intact medieval city center boasts more than 1,500 monument buildings.

The city’s symbol is the Stone Bridge (Steinerne Brücke) built in the 12th century, which was the Danube’s only bridge in this region for nearly 900 years. Next to the bridge stands the famous Würstküche, the world’s oldest place that has been serving traditional Regensburg sausages since 1146. The Gothic towers of St. Peter’s Cathedral are 105 meters high and form one of the most beautiful architectural ensembles in the Danube Valley.

Regensburg is also famous for the Domspatzen church music tradition; the cathedral choir looks back on more than a thousand years of history. The Thurn und Taxis ducal palace in the city’s old town now serves as a museum and provides insight into the life of German aristocracy.

Bavarian Forest

Germany’s first national park stretches along the Czech border and is Central Europe’s largest contiguous forested area. The park was established in 1970 and operates on the philosophy of „letting wilderness be wilderness”.

The national park offers an almost pristine natural environment where visitors can discover Central Europe’s native flora and fauna. Wolves, lynx, wildcats, and numerous rare bird species live in the park. The Hans-Eisenmann-Haus visitor center features interactive exhibitions showcasing the park’s natural values, while the Baumwipfelpfad canopy walk leads 1,300 meters among the trees.

Numerous hiking trails can be found within the park area, from easy walks to climbing major mountain peaks. Lusen (1,373 m) and Rachel (1,453 m) are the highest points, from which, in clear weather, one can see far across the Bavarian Forest and Bohemian Forest landscape.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

The medieval town rising above the Tauber River preserves the atmosphere of a 16th-century German small town in almost unchanged form.

The city’s main attraction is the market square and the Gothic St. James Church, which houses Tilman Riemenschneider’s famous wooden sculptures. The town hall is a partly Gothic, partly Renaissance building, from whose tower a beautiful panorama opens over the surrounding Tauber Valley. The Plönlein, the city’s most iconic corner, is one of Germany’s most photographed locations.

Rothenburg is famous for its Christmas atmosphere; the Käthe Wohlfahrt Christmas Museum evokes the magic of Christmas holidays year-round. The city is one of the main stops on the Romantic Road (Romantische Straße) and an unparalleled example of late medieval civic architecture. During the night watchman tour, visitors can explore the illuminated old town led by the city’s night watchman.

Eagle’s Nest

Hitler’s former mountain residence on the Kehlstein mountain at 1,834 meters altitude, which is now operated as a historical memorial site and museum. The building was completed in 1938 for Hitler’s 50th birthday, but the dictator visited it only 14 times in total.

The road leading to the building is itself an engineering marvel: the 6.5-kilometer Kehlsteinstraße serpentine road leads up the mountain with 27 curves, then at the end of a 124-meter-long tunnel, a gold-plated elevator takes visitors to the building. The documentation center objectively presents historical events and the horrors of the Nazi era.

From the Eagle’s Nest, a breathtaking panorama opens over the Berchtesgaden Alps, including the peaks of Untersberg, Watzmann, and Hochkalter. On clear days, one can see as far as Salzburg. The building now operates as a restaurant and museum and is open from May to October. Among the hiking trails, the path leading on foot from the Documentation Center is particularly beautiful.

Tegernsee

The lake lies 50 kilometers south of Munich and is a favorite weekend destination for Munich residents.

The lake’s water warms to 20-24 degrees Celsius in summer, providing excellent swimming opportunities. Numerous sailing and boat rental facilities can be found along its shores, while the surrounding mountains offer excellent hiking opportunities. The nearby Wallberg (1,722 m) features Germany’s longest toboggan run, which operates in both winter and summer.

The Tegernsee area is famous for wellness tourism, with numerous luxury hotels and spas located here. The region’s culinary specialties include local fish, especially yesterday’s trout, as well as fresh Alpine cheeses. The former Benedictine monastery on the lake’s southern shore now operates as a cultural center and brewery, where the famous Tegernseer beer is brewed.

The „City of Three Rivers” at the confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers, near the Austrian border. Due to its unique geographical location and Italian-style baroque architecture, it is often called Bavarian Venice.

The Veste Oberhaus fortress towering above the city dates from the 13th century and now serves as a museum providing insight into the city’s and region’s history. From the fortress terraces, a beautiful view opens over the confluence of the three rivers, where the different colors of the waters are clearly visible: the Danube is grayish, the Inn greenish, and the Ilz has blackish water.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral in the heart of the city boasts the world’s largest church organ, which has 17,974 pipes and 233 registers. The cathedral’s baroque interior is stunning, and the regular organ concerts provide an unforgettable experience.

Herrenchiemsee Palace

King Ludwig II of Bavaria’s castle designed after the model of Versailles stands on the largest island of Chiemsee. The castle is a copy of the French royal residence but was never completely finished because the king died in 1886.

Twenty rooms were completed, but only 10 of these served as living quarters. The most impressive room is the Hall of Mirrors, which is even larger and more magnificent than the original at Versailles. The king’s bedroom is covered with gold brocade, and the ceiling paintings proclaim the glory of French King Louis XIV.

The castle’s park was created following the French model, decorated with geometric shapes and water fountains. However, the park was never completely finished because work was stopped after the king’s death. Next to the castle is a museum that presents Ludwig II’s life and the history of the castle’s construction. From Chiemsee, a beautiful view opens over the surrounding Alpine peaks.

Zugspitze

Germany’s highest mountain at 2,962 meters altitude stands on the Bavarian-Austrian border and is accessible year-round by cogwheel railway or cable car. From the summit, an unparalleled panorama opens over the peaks of the German, Austrian, Swiss, and Italian Alps.

There are three ways to reach the Zugspitze: the Zugspitzbahn cogwheel railway departs from Garmisch-Partenkirchen and arrives at Zugspitzplatt, from where a cable car takes you to the summit. The second option is the Zugspitze cable car departing from Eibsee, which covers the 1,945-meter elevation difference in 10 minutes. The third route is the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn from the Austrian side.

The AlpspiX viewing platform is located at the summit. This consists of two 24-meter-long steel beams that cross each other and hang over a 1,000-meter depth. On clear days, visibility extends up to 200 kilometers, and the Grossglockner, the Dolomites, and even the Swiss Alps are visible. The Zugspitze area is a ski paradise in winter and attracts hikers in summer, and due to the glacier, there is snow year-round.

Eibsee

The emerald-green mountain lake at the foot of the Zugspitze is one of Bavaria’s most beautiful natural attractions. The lake lies at 1,000 meters above sea level, and the snowy peak of the Zugspitze is reflected in its crystal-clear water.

A 7.5-kilometer walking path surrounds the lake, which is about a 2-hour pleasant walk suitable for families. The path leads past various viewpoints from which beautiful photos can be taken of the lake and surrounding mountains. The lake’s water is cold even in summer, usually 16-18 degrees Celsius, but some people still take a dip.

The modern cable car leading to the Zugspitze departs from Eibsee, which is an engineering marvel: it covers almost 2,000 meters of elevation difference through only three pillars. Numerous hiking trails lead around Eibsee into the surrounding mountains, such as the Eibsee-Rundweg and the path leading to Frillensee.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen

The world-famous winter sports center and resort town is located at the foot of the Zugspitze. The city was the venue for the 1936 Winter Olympics and the 2011 Alpine Ski World Championships.

Traditional Bavarian houses stand in the city’s old town, decorated with „Lüftlmalerei” facade painting. These colorful frescoes depict religious or secular scenes and are characteristic elements of Bavarian folk art. The main street, Ludwigstraße, features numerous shops, restaurants, and cafés.

It’s an excellent starting point for Alpine hiking and mountaineering. The Partnach Gorge, Höllentalklamm, and numerous other natural wonders are easily accessible from here. In winter, the city transforms into a ski paradise; the surrounding ski areas, such as Hausberg and Kreuzeck, offer opportunities for skiers of all levels, from beginners to professionals. The city annually hosts the famous New Year’s ski jumping competition.

Partnachklamm

The mountain gorge near Garmisch-Partenkirchen was carved by the Partnach stream into the limestone rocks.

The path through the 699-meter-long and 80-meter-deep gorge is equipped with safe railings and tunnels, allowing visitors to closely admire the rock walls that are more than 100 meters high. From the gorge entrance to the end, there’s about a 20-30 minute walk, and several viewpoints along the way offer opportunities to take beautiful photos.

The Partnachklamm is particularly spectacular in winter, when icicles hanging from the rock walls and frozen waterfalls provide a fairy-tale sight. A small restaurant can also be found at the end of the gorge.

Augsburg

Bavaria’s third-largest city boasts more than 2,000 years of history and is one of Germany’s oldest settlements. The city was founded by the Romans in 15 AD and named after Emperor Augustus.

The city experienced its golden age in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance when the Fugger and Welser merchant families made it Europe’s richest financial center. The Fuggerei is the world’s first social housing estate from 1521, which still operates today and can also be visited as a museum.

The Peace of Augsburg was concluded here in 1555, which ended the religious wars in the Holy Roman Empire. The city boasts numerous beautiful churches, including the St. Ulrich and Afra Basilica and the Romanesque cathedral. The Renaissance town hall building with the Golden Hall (Goldener Saal) is one of Germany’s most beautiful secular interiors.

Wieskirche

The „Church in the Meadow” is a Rococo church built in the mid-18th century in the Pfaffenwinkel region, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Its special story began with a weeping Christ statue around which a pilgrimage site developed.

The church’s exterior is simple, but its interior is one of the pinnacles of European Rococo art. The creation of architects and artists Dominikus and Johann Baptist Zimmermann demonstrates the perfect harmony of stucco work, frescoes, and gold decoration. The ceiling fresco above the main altar bears the title „The Open Gate of Heaven” and depicts Christ’s Second Coming.

Its specialty is the ceiling painting created with trompe-l’oeil technique, which creates the illusion that the church’s ceiling is open and one can look toward the sky. Beautiful Alpine landscape surrounds the pilgrimage church. It regularly hosts classical music concerts as well.

Burghausen

The world’s longest castle complex is located on the banks of the Salzach River, near the Austrian border.

The more than 1,000-meter-long castle dates from the 11th century and was one of the most important fortifications of the Bavarian dukes. It consists of six courtyards, each representing a different historical period. The main castle houses a museum that presents the castle’s and region’s history, as well as medieval weapons and artifacts. From the castle walls, a beautiful view opens over the Salzach Valley and the Austrian landscapes on the opposite side.

Colorful burgher houses line the historic old town of the castle town, reflecting the wealth of medieval merchants. The main square features St. James Church with its Gothic tower, as well as numerous cafés and restaurants.

Lake Constance, situated at the foot of the Alps, is a popular holiday destination thanks to its location, attractions, and excellent infrastructure.

The freshwater lake, located at the border of Austria, Germany, and Switzerland at the northern foot of the Alps, is the third largest lake in Central Europe after Lake Balaton and Lake Geneva. It receives its water mainly from the Rhine, and the water color is light greenish. During snowmelt, the water level often suddenly rises by 2-3 meters. Its maximum depth is 254 m.

Lake Constance attractions

Bregenz

The capital of Vorarlberg, Austria’s westernmost province, is situated in a beautiful natural environment.

The city has a rich historical past dating back to Roman times when it was known as Brigantium. Today it is primarily known as a cultural and tourist center, particularly famous for its summer music event, the Bregenz Festival, with its unique stage built on the water that is known worldwide.

The city can be divided into two main parts: the Old Town and the more modern lakeside district. In the Old Town, you’ll find charming medieval streets and the 13th-century Martinsturm, which is one of the symbols of Vorarlberg. From the tower, there is a magnificent view of Lake Constance and the surrounding mountains.

Lindau

Located in southern Germany, on the border of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Its most unique part is the old town, situated on an island connected to the mainland by a bridge.

Its most famous attraction is the harbor, guarded by a 19th-century lion statue and a lighthouse. This famous entrance is one of the most photogenic locations at Lake Constance. The lighthouse is Bavaria’s only such structure, open to visitors, and offers stunning panoramic views from its top.

The city center is full of medieval buildings, narrow cobblestone streets, and charming squares. The old town hall with its beautiful facade and frescoes is particularly noteworthy.

The iconic building of Lindau

Friedrichshafen

This German city is located in the middle of the northern part of the lake.

It is primarily known as the birthplace of Zeppelin airship travel. For this reason, its most important attraction is the Zeppelin Museum, which presents in detail the history of the famous airships, including the legendary Hindenburg. Through interactive exhibitions and full-scale reconstructions, visitors can get a glimpse into the golden age of airship travel.

The city center is modern but also contains historical elements. One such example is the Schlosskirche, a 17th-century baroque church that is one of Friedrichshafen’s symbols. At the pier, there is an observation tower offering a beautiful panorama of the lake.

The birthplace of Zeppelin

Meersburg

The city’s special atmosphere comes from the unique combination of historical buildings, vineyards, and cultural attractions.

Its most famous landmark is Meersburg Castle (Alte Burg), which is Germany’s oldest inhabited castle. Founded in the 7th century, this fortress has been preserved in impressive condition and provides insight into everyday medieval life. The castle offers a magnificent view of Lake Constance and the Alps.

In the downtown area, there are narrow cobblestone streets and colorful half-timbered houses. It is also an important cultural site, home to the Droste-Hülshoff Museum, which presents the former home of the famous German writer, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff.

The area around Meersburg is an excellent wine-growing region, so viticulture plays a significant role in the city’s life. The lakeside promenade is full of wineries where you can taste the region’s famous wines, especially Riesling.

Great wine-growing countryside

Überlingen

The central settlement of the northwestern arm of Lake Constance is famous for its historical heritage, picturesque lakefront, and charming old town.

Its historical center boasts numerous medieval and Renaissance buildings that have preserved their original form well. One of the most important sights is the Sankt Nikolaus Church, built in the Gothic style in the 1300s. Next to the church is the city’s main square, where the famous Rathaus, or city hall, is located, built in 16th-century Renaissance style.

It is also famous for its flower gardens, especially the beautiful green areas of Bodensee Park and Überlingen’s lakeside garden.

Centre of the north-western part of the lake

Mainau

This small island is the most beautiful part of Lake Constance, which we can also call the Island of Flowers.

The island is owned by the Swedish Bernadotte family, who landscaped and transformed Mainau into a botanical specialty in the 20th century. Its central building is Mainau Castle, dating from the 18th century and still owned by the Bernadotte family. The castle is baroque in style, with an elegant garden and a picturesque chapel.

Its greatest attraction is the wonderful botanical garden, which shows a different face throughout the year. In spring, thousands of tulips cover the park, in summer roses and tropical plants bloom, while in autumn the dahlia festival creates colorful flower fields.

The tropical section is presented in the palm house, where banana trees, orchids, and other exotic plants can be found. One of the most popular attractions is the butterfly house, one of the largest such facilities in Europe, where hundreds of colorful butterflies can be seen in their natural environment.

Actually an island of flowers

Konstanz

The largest and one of the most important cities on Lake Constance is located in southwestern Germany, directly on the Swiss border.

Its historical center has preserved its medieval character well, as it did not suffer significant destruction during World War II. The Konstanz Cathedral (Münster Unserer Lieben Frau) was an important ecclesiastical center for centuries and today still welcomes visitors with impressive interiors and an observation tower.

What might make its name familiar is the Council of Constance held between 1414 and 1418, which had a significant impact on European religious and political life. In memory of this, the iconic Imperia statue stands in the harbor, a huge rotating female figure alluding to the corrupt papacy and power games of the time.

Medieval town

Arbon

The Swiss small town’s history goes back more than 2000 years, as it was known as Arbor Felix in Roman times.

One of the city’s most important attractions is Schloss Arbon, an imposing medieval castle that now functions as a museum, showcasing the region’s history from Roman times to the present day. The Sankt Martin Church in the city is also noteworthy, as its tower offers a magnificent panorama of the lake and the surrounding countryside.

It is also an important city from an industrial perspective, as it was the founding location of the famous Saurer vehicle factory, which once manufactured trucks and buses. The Saurer Museum today presents the industrial heritage of the region, providing insight into the history and technological development of the factory.

Sankt Gallen

This Swiss city, located 11 km away, is the cultural and economic center of the region.

The settlement is best known for its world-famous 8th-century Benedictine abbey, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The abbey library preserves one of the world’s oldest and most valuable book collections, and its impressive baroque hall offers a special sight.

The old town is full of beautifully decorated, painted gabled balconies, which are characteristic architectural elements of Sankt Gallen. The Textile Museum here provides insight into Sankt Gallen’s famous textile industry past, as local lace and embroidery were sought-after products worldwide for centuries.

Conny-Land

Located 15 km from Konstanz, this is Lake Constance’s most popular amusement park.

Attractions at Switzerland’s largest amusement park include the Cobra roller coaster, which has one of Europe’s steepest tracks and a section that starts backward. There are plenty of opportunities for younger visitors as well, such as the Dino Attack interactive experience, which is an exciting dinosaur-themed adventure.

The park’s specialty is that it offers not only amusement park experiences but also animal shows. The most famous of these is the seal and dolphin show. The parrot show is also very popular, where the birds demonstrate impressive tricks.

Nuremberg, as one of Germany’s most important cities, played a significant role in the Middle Ages. As a result, it offers wonderful attractions.

After Munich, it is Bavaria’s second most populous city. Together with the neighboring cities of Fürth and Erlangen, it forms Northern Bavaria’s most important economic and cultural center.

Nuremberg attractions

Nuremberg Imperial Castle (Kaiserburg)

The fortress towering over the city was one of the most important imperial residences of the Holy Roman Empire during the Middle Ages.

The castle was built in the 11th century and was one of the best-protected fortresses in medieval Europe. Due to its strategic location, imperial rulers regularly used it as a residence, and German emperors often held assemblies here.

The castle consists of several parts, including the imperial palace (Kaiserburg), which was a symbol of imperial power. Today, the building houses a museum that showcases medieval life and the history of the castle. The deep well in the castle courtyard, the Tiefer Brunnen, is one of the city’s most interesting historical monuments.

From its grounds, there is a wonderful panoramic view of Nuremberg’s old town. The castle is also an important symbol of German history that survived the devastation of the world wars and remains one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions.

St. Lawrence Church (Lorenzkirche)

One of Nuremberg’s most significant Gothic churches was built in the 13th century. Its impressive facade and two massive towers are visible from afar, making the building an iconic monument of the city.

The interior of the church is also impressive: the wonderful stained glass windows and imposing Gothic vaults captivate visitors. Particularly noteworthy are the „Königskronleuchter” (Royal Chandelier) and the wooden sculpture „Annunciation” created by Veit Stoss, which is a masterpiece of late German Gothic art.

During World War II, the church was severely damaged, but its original beauty was restored during post-war reconstruction. Today, the church is one of Nuremberg’s most important religious and cultural centers, regularly hosting concerts and exhibitions.

St. Sebaldus Church (Sebalduskirche)

One of Nuremberg’s oldest and most significant churches.

Built in the 13th century, the church’s patron saint, St. Sebaldus, is the patron of Nuremberg, and his tomb is one of the building’s most important attractions.

In its style, it combines Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements and is particularly famous for the ornate bronze sarcophagus that houses the earthly remains of St. Sebaldus. The altar and interior frescoes are impressive works of art.

The church suffered significant damage during World War II but was carefully restored. Today, it is one of the city’s most important religious buildings, worth visiting for its artistic value and historical significance.

Hauptmarkt

Nuremberg’s central square has been the center of city life for centuries.

Here you can find the famous „Schöner Brunnen” (Beautiful Fountain), an ornate, Gothic-style stone fountain. According to tradition, you should touch it for good luck.

The square’s most vibrant period is during the Christmas market, the Christkindlesmarkt, which is one of Germany’s most beautiful Advent markets. Traditional Christmas pastries, handicrafts, and mulled wine are sold in the atmospheric stalls.

The Hauptmarkt is also the venue for the local market every day, where you can buy fresh fruits, vegetables, and local specialties. There are numerous historical buildings and cozy cafes around the square, making it worth exploring during a pleasant walk.

The famous Christmas fair is held here

Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche)

The church stands on the Hauptmarkt, making it one of the city’s central attractions. It was built in the 14th century at the command of Emperor Charles IV of the Holy Roman Empire.

One of its most well-known elements is its clock mechanism, which presents a spectacular figurative display at noon daily. During the „Männleinlaufen” mechanism, figures of the imperial electors parade before the emperor, evoking the medieval traditions of the Holy Roman Empire.

Inside the church, there is a wonderful Gothic altar, and the colorful stained glass windows are also impressive. The church suffered serious damage during World War II but was carefully restored.

Albrecht Dürer’s House

Albrecht Dürer, the famous German Renaissance painter and graphic artist, was one of Nuremberg’s most renowned natives. His former home now functions as a museum that presents the artist’s life and work.

The building dates from the 15th century and is one of the most beautiful surviving half-timbered houses in Nuremberg. The interior reconstructs the furnishing style of Dürer’s era, while interactive exhibitions and workshops on the upper floor provide insight into the artist’s working methods.

In the museum, you can learn about Dürer’s famous engravings and paintings, and they also demonstrate contemporary printing techniques. Next to the building stands a statue of Albrecht Dürer, which is one of the city’s most famous monuments.

All information can be found here!

Weißgerbergasse

A wonderful street exuding a medieval atmosphere in Nuremberg’s old town. The street’s name refers to the old tanners (Weißgerber) who worked here in the Middle Ages.

The specialty of the street is the row of colorful, half-timbered houses, many of which have survived in their original condition. These buildings preserve the workshops and residences of medieval craftsmen, allowing visitors to travel back in time for a moment.

Today, Weißgerbergasse is a popular pedestrian street with cozy cafes, restaurants, and small shops. During a pleasant walk, you can enjoy the historical atmosphere and admire the beautiful facades.

There are several timber-framed houses of different colours

Henkersteg and Fleischbrücke

The Henkersteg, or „Hangman’s Bridge” is a 16th-century covered wooden bridge that spans the Pegnitz River. It got its name because the city executioner’s house was nearby, as executioners formed an outcast social group in the Middle Ages.

The bridge offers a picturesque sight and is one of the city’s most photogenic locations. The medieval houses in the area and the riverside environment give the area a special atmosphere.

The Fleischbrücke, or old Butcher’s Bridge, is one of Nuremberg’s most beautiful Renaissance bridges. Built at the end of the 16th century, it is structurally similar to Venice’s Rialto Bridge. With its massive stone arch and elegant design, the bridge is one of the city’s most important architectural monuments.

Henkersteg

Volkspark Dutzendteich

One of Nuremberg’s largest and most beautiful parks is located in the southeastern part of the city.

The central element of the area is Lake Dutzendteich, which was once a natural body of water but has been artificially expanded over the centuries. The park is a popular excursion destination for locals and tourists.

The park hosts numerous events throughout the year. The most famous event is the Nürnberger Volksfest, which is a huge amusement park and beer festival. Visitors can taste traditional Bavarian food and drinks.

The lake and the infamous Nazi headquarters building

Zoo (Tiergarten Nürnberg)

One of Germany’s largest and most beautiful zoos, located in a special natural environment in a forested, hilly area.

The park covers about 65 hectares and is home to more than 300 animal species. Its uniqueness comes from being built on the site of a former quarry, whose natural rocky formations and lush vegetation give the animal park a unique atmosphere.

One of its most famous attractions is the dolphinarium, where visitors can observe bottlenose dolphins up close. Also popular are the huge enclosures for gorillas and orangutans, the seal show, and the penguin colony.

All information can be found here!

German National Museum (Germanisches Nationalmuseum)

The German National Museum contains Germany’s largest cultural and historical collection, showcasing the artistic and scientific heritage of the German-speaking region.

The museum preserves more than 1.3 million objects, including medieval armor, old maps, religious artifacts, and famous paintings. The institution also pays special attention to showcasing German craftsmanship and technological development.

The museum’s exhibitions are interactive, allowing visitors to gain deeper insight into medieval and modern German history. The building itself is historically significant, as it was converted from an old monastery and later expanded with modern wings.

All information can be found here!

Palace of Justice (Justizpalast)

The Palace of Justice is known worldwide for the Nuremberg Trials, which were the venue for holding Nazi war criminals accountable after World War II.

The building was originally built at the beginning of the 20th century and remains one of Nuremberg’s most important legal institutions today. The famous Courtroom 600 hosted the war crimes trials between 1945 and 1946. During the trials, many Nazi leaders were sentenced to death or long prison terms.

Today, part of the building functions as a museum where visitors can learn about the history of the Nuremberg Trials and their legal consequences through interactive exhibitions.

All information can be found here!

Documentation Center (Dokumentationszentrum Reichsparteitagsgelände)

One of Nuremberg’s most important historical sites showcases the activities of the Nazi regime and their consequences.

The building is located in the former Nazi Party Congress Center, which Hitler used for gigantic propaganda rallies. The museum’s interactive exhibitions present in detail the spread of Nazi ideology, the events of World War II, and the horrors of the Holocaust.

The site is particularly shocking as the enormous, unfinished congress building still stands today, reminding us of the darkest period in history. The exhibition aims to serve as a lesson for future generations and promote the preservation of historical memory.

All information can be found here!

Transport Museum (Verkehrsmuseum Nürnberg)

The Deutsche Bahn railway museum is a few minutes’ walk from Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof.

It is one of Germany’s oldest and most important transportation-themed museums. The exhibitions show the development of rail transport from 19th-century steam locomotives to modern high-speed ICE trains. Through spectacular models and original locomotives, we can follow how the travel experience has changed over the past two centuries.

One of the most exciting parts of the museum is the exhibition on the history of rail transport, which begins with the opening of one of the world’s first railway lines. Nuremberg played a special role in this, as the first German steam locomotive, the Adler, put into service in 1835, operated here. An exact replica of the legendary locomotive can also be seen in the museum.

The museum also features an 80 m² H0-scale analog model railway. The model railway, built between 1950 and 1960, is operated by 5000 relays. It does not run continuously but is switched on hourly or half-hourly.

Berlin’s transportation system is excellent, similar to other Western European cities. The metro network is particularly outstanding, often making it sufficient to rely solely on rail transportation.

Transportation between airports and the city center

There are two airports in Berlin, with the newest one (Brandenburg) opening in 2020. The latter is the largest and Berlin’s main airport.

Tegel Airport was closed at the end of 2020, while Schönefeld now operates as one of the terminals of Brandenburg Airport.

Berlin-Brandenburg Airport

Located 18 km south of Berlin’s center, next to Berlin-Schönefeld Airport.

It has two terminals (T1, T2) and is easily accessible from Berlin’s center in multiple ways.

Berlin public transport tickets are only valid with a „C” zone supplementary ticket.

S-Bahn

S9 and S45 trains (similar to suburban rail) take you to the T1-T2 station.

Transfer options to the metro are available at various stops for both lines.

X7 ExpressBus

Operates 24/7 between Rudow U7 metro station and the T1-T2 stop. Also stops at T5 (Schönefeld).

The fastest way to get in by bus (about 18 minutes travel time from the metro station), as it has no intermediate stops outside the terminals.

Schönefeld Airport (Terminal T5 of Brandenburg Airport)

Schönefeld Airport became Terminal T5 of Brandenburg Airport.

You can travel between T1-T2 and T5 terminals using the S9 and S45 trains.

Berlin public transport tickets are only valid with a „C” zone supplementary ticket.

Airport-Express Schönefeld

RE7, RB14, or RB19 trains can take you to the city center between 4:30 and 23:00.

Transfer options to the metro are available at various stops for all lines.

S-Bahn

S45 and S9 trains also provide access to the city.

Transfer options to the metro are available at various stops for both lines.

Buses

Several bus lines operate to the airport, providing transfers to metro or train in the suburbs.

The best choice is the X7 bus, operating 24/7 to Rudow U7 metro station (with its other terminus at the T1-T2 stop).

Additionally, buses 163, 164, and 171 operate with longer travel times.

You can find all information about transportation between T1, T2, and T5 (Schönefeld) terminals and Berlin here!

Berlin city public transport

Berlin has an excellent public transportation system, with easy access everywhere by metro (U-Bahn), bus, and suburban rail (S-Bahn).

We must highlight bus 100, which covers the main attractions in the city center. It’s worth using this service.

Berlin is divided into three zones (A, B, C), with almost all attractions located in zones A and B. For Brandenburg and Schönefeld airports, an ABC ticket or an AB ticket with a „C” supplement is required.

Tickets

AB tickets (Einzelfahrschein) and ABC tickets are valid for 2 hours with unlimited transfers but cannot be used for return trips.

If you only have an AB ticket, you need a „C” supplement to travel to zone C.

In the AB zone, you can also buy a short-trip ticket (Kurzstrecke) for a maximum of 3 metro or S-Bahn stops, or 6 bus or tram stops.

The 4-trip collective ticket allows 4 trips and is available for AB and ABC zones.

The 4-trip short-trip ticket (4-Fahrten-Karte Kurzstrecke) contains 4 short-trip tickets, valid for a maximum of 3 metro or S-Bahn stops, or 6 bus or tram stops.

Day ticket, weekly pass

AB and ABC day tickets (24-Stunden-karte) are available, valid for 24 hours after validation.

Group day tickets (24-Stunden-Karte Kleingruppen) can be purchased for up to 5 people. Valid for 24 hours after validation.

AB and ABC 7-day passes (7-Tage-Karte) are available, valid until midnight of the 7th day. These allow free travel for up to 3 children aged 6-14 with an adult on holidays, weekends, and weekdays after 8 PM.

Prices can be found collected here!

Ticket prices

For prices, the first price is for those over 14, the second price is for ages 6-14 (except for the last row).

Ticket type

Price (€)

Plus information

Ticket „AB” zone

3.50 / 2.20

valid for 120 minutes

Ticket „ABC” zone

4.40 / 3.20

valid for 120 minutes

Short-trip ticket „AB” zone

2.40 / 1.90

max 3 stops on metro, 6 stops on tram

4-trip collective ticket „AB” zone

10.80 / 6.60

4-trip collective ticket „ABC” zone

15.00 / 10.60

4-trip short-trip ticket „ABC” zone

7.00 / 5.40

max 3 stops on metro, 6 stops on tram

Supplement for „C” zone

2.10 / 1.60

supplement for „AB” zone ticket

24-hour ticket „AB” zone

9.90 / 6.50

7-day passes „AB” zóna

41.50

single price for children over 6 years

Munich’s transport is very well organised, making it very easy to use public transport in the Bavarian capital.

Airport

Munich has one airport (Franz Josef Strauss International Airport) with two terminals, located 30 km north of the city center.

The fastest way to reach the city center is by suburban train: the S1 and S8 lines have separate stops at the airport, departing at about 10-minute intervals. Both stop at Marienplatz and Hauptbahnhof (main station) as well. The journey time is approximately 40 minutes.

The S8 train operates between 4 AM and 1 AM. Exact timetables can be found here (enter „S8” on the Timetable page)!

The city tickets are not valid for these trains, you need an AirportPLUS-Ticket, which can be purchased online, via mobile application, and at ticket machines.

The Lufthansa Express Bus is a direct bus service between the airport and Munich Hauptbahnhof. It runs every 20 minutes every day, with a journey time of about 45 minutes. All information (timetable, ticket prices, etc.) can be found here!

Additionally, the airport can also be reached by Flixbus and regional trains from other cities. All options are summarized here!

Munich City public transport

Munich’s public transport system consists of four types of vehicles: U-Bahn (subway), S-Bahn (suburban train), tram, and bus.

Munich is divided into zones: tourists will mostly need the central city zone, Zone M. (The airport is not included in this zone.)

Ticket types

Travel is free for children under 6 years! Discounted fares apply for ages 6-14.

A single trip ticket (Einzelfahrkarte) is valid for one journey. There is also a „Kurzstrecke,” valid for 1 hour (recommended for city center travel). Tickets bought on trams or buses are valid for that journey only and do not require validation.

The day ticket (Single-Tageskarten) applies to a calendar day. It is valid on the day of validation and until 6 AM the following day.

The group day ticket (Gruppen-Tageskarte) is also valid on the day of validation and until 6 AM the next day. Up to 5 adults can travel with it, but 6-14-year-olds count as half. Ideal for families. (For example, two adults and four 6-14-year-olds can travel together.)

There is also a child day ticket (Kinder-Tageskarte) for 6-14-year-olds. This is worth buying for one adult and one child. It is valid on the day of validation and until 6 AM the following day.

Prices of tickets

Ticket type

Price (€)

Plus information

AirportPLUS-Ticket (city-airport)

15.50

S1 és S8 train

Lufthansa Express Bus (city-airport)

12.00 / 19.30

single / return

Single trip ticket

3.90 / 1.80

adult / 6-14 ages

1 hour ticket (Kurzstrecke)

1.90

Day ticket

9.20 / 3.60

adult / 6-14 ages

Group day ticket

17.80

Child day ticket

3.60

6-14 ages

Ticket purchase

Ticket machines are available at every subway station, offering all types of tickets.

Tickets can also be purchased via the MVV-App, available for iPhone and Android.

Tickets can be purchased from machines located on buses and trams as well.

All information (ticket prices, journey planner, etc.) can be found here!

Tourist passes

There are two good options for those who want to visit multiple paid attractions.

Both options can be combined with free public transport in the city center.

With the Munich Card, you can purchase tickets at discounted prices at listed locations.

The Munich City Pass allows free entry to many places and discounted entry to others.

All information can be found here! (The list of attractions is under the Attractions menu.)

Dresden is an outstanding German city in terms of culture and art. Here I present the eight best museums found here!

The best museums in Dresden

Old Masters Picture Gallery

Located in the Zwinger complex, this museum houses one of the world’s most significant painting collections. It primarily showcases European painting masterpieces from the 15th to 18th centuries.

The foundation of the collection was laid by Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony, which was created for Saxon rulers and aristocracy to express their power. It was opened to the public in 1855.

We can see over 750 paintings originating from various parts of Europe, including works by Italian, Spanish, French, Dutch, and German masters. One of the most famous pieces in the collection is Vermeer’s „Girl with a Pearl Earring”. Other outstanding works include pieces by Rembrandt, Titian, and Albrecht Dürer.

All information can be found here!

Green Vault

Located in the Dresden Castle, this museum reflects the wealth and artistic taste of Saxon electors and kings.

It consists of two parts: the Historisches Grünes Gewölbe (Historic Green Vault) and the Neues Grünes Gewölbe (New Green Vault). In the Historic Green Vault, objects are displayed in restored baroque-style rooms as they were visible in Augustus the Strong’s time. The New Green Vault’s modern exhibition spaces are equipped with the latest technology for proper protection of the objects.

It consists of over 4000 items, including jewelry, goldsmith’s work, precious stones, coins, as well as rare and valuable art pieces. Among the most famous pieces are the „Tears of Aurora” (a group of precious stones), as well as unique furnishings adorned with precious stones. The collection showcases artistic and craft creations from different eras, highlighting the richness of Saxon art and craftsmanship.

All information can be found here!

German Military History Museum

One of Germany’s most important military history institutions.

The museum, opened in 1897, was last significantly renovated in 2011 when a huge steel viewing platform was placed in the middle of the building, designed by famous American architect Daniel Libeskind.

Its collection consists of over 10,000 objects covering the period from the Middle Ages to the present day. The exhibited items include uniforms, weapons, medals, artworks, as well as modern military equipment. The exhibitions are arranged thematically, presenting military conflicts and their social impacts not only in German but also in European and world historical contexts.

Dresden’s architecture and art collections make it one of Germany’s most beautiful cities, offering numerous attractions in this Saxon settlement.

The city is the political center of Saxony, housing the headquarters of the Saxon state parliament and government, as well as numerous state authorities.

The city is often called the „Florence of the Elbe”, originally due to its art collections, Baroque and Mediterranean architecture, and its picturesque and climatically favorable location. It is considered one of Europe’s greenest cities.

Much of the city center as we know it today is reconstructed and rebuilt. This is due to the Allied air forces’ bombing of Dresden, which resulted in the complete destruction of the entire city center.

Dresden attractions

Dresden Castle

One of Germany’s most significant cultural treasures, located in the old town.

The original, much smaller palace was built in the 16th century and burned down in 1701. It was then rebuilt and expanded. Augustus the Strong made the palace his permanent residence, which thereafter became the residence of the Saxon princes. It gained its current Neo-Renaissance exterior in the early 1900s.

The castle houses the Green Vault, which is the treasury of the Saxon royal family. This will be described in more detail below.

The castle also hosts numerous other exhibitions, such as the porcelain exhibition showcasing the famous Meissen porcelain, and the armory displaying a wide range of historical armor and weapons. Additionally, in the Old Masters Picture Gallery, we can see works by Raphael, Rembrandt, and Rubens.

Frauenkirche

One of Dresden’s most significant attractions, also rebuilt.

It was once one of the most beautiful and significant Protestant churches in all of Germany, which was destroyed in World War II. The ruins were left for decades as a memorial to the Second World War. After reconstruction, the consecration took place in 2005.

The church is not only a symbol of Dresden but also of reunified Germany, representing peace and reconciliation.

Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (Hofkirche)

The church’s clock tower and dome on the banks of the Elbe is one of Dresden’s defining sights.

Construction began in 1738 based on plans by Gaetano Chiaveri and was completed in 1751. The church was originally intended as the court church of the Saxon electors and kings, which is reflected in its magnificent execution. During construction, elements of the Rococo style appeared alongside late Baroque features, which can be seen in the rich decoration of the interior.

The church houses a famous organ that often plays during musical events. Classical concerts are regularly held.

Zwinger

One of Dresden’s most famous and spectacular Baroque building complexes, notable not only for its architectural beauty but also for the cultural treasures preserved in its museums.

Built on the orders of Augustus the Strong from 1709 to 1728, it was designed by the Italian Baroque architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann. The building complex served as a place of entertainment for the royal court, where lavish celebrations and garden parties were held.

The complex has a U-shaped layout, with a huge Baroque garden decorated with statues and fountains at its center. The Zwinger’s magnificent facades and decorated pavilions offer a stunning sight. The most significant buildings include the Glockenspielpavillon (Carillon Pavilion), the Wallpavillon (Wall Pavilion), and the Kronentor (Crown Gate).

It is also the headquarters of several museums. One of the most important is the Semper Gallery, which bears the name Old Masters Picture Gallery (Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister). You can read more about this below.

Another important section is the Porzellansammlung (Porcelain Collection), which contains one of the world’s largest and most valuable collections of Meissen porcelain. It also houses the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon (Mathematical-Physical Salon), which displays a wide range of historical scientific instruments, including clocks, globes, and telescopes.

Semper Opera House

A defining venue not only for Germany’s but the world’s opera literature and performing arts life.

It is named after the architect Gottfried Semper, who designed the original building in the 1840s. Above the main entrance stands J. Schilling’s bronze group: a quadriga with Dionysus and Ariadne. In the wall recesses are statues of Shakespeare, Sophocles, Molière, and Euripides, while in front of the entrance stand statues of Goethe and Schiller.

Its interior is considered one of the most beautiful opera houses: the five levels of the auditorium are equipped with elegant boxes, rich decorations, and wonderful ceiling frescoes.

Fürstenzug

The Procession of Princes is one of Dresden’s most famous and beautiful artistic creations. The 102-meter-long ceramic fresco can be seen on the outer wall of the Long Gallery on Augustusstraße.

The work depicts members of the House of Wettin, Saxony’s ruling dynasty, in a horseback procession that spans over 700 years of history, from 1127 to 1904. The creation features a total of 35 Saxon dukes, electors, and kings, surrounded by scholars, artists, and craftsmen, symbolizing the historical and cultural significance of the dynasty.

It was originally created between 1871 and 1876 based on a painting by Wilhelm Walther, but the weather-exposed paintings soon faded. Therefore, between 1904-1907, the fresco was transferred to 23,000 porcelain tiles at the Meissen porcelain manufactory. Thanks to this, we can see it in its original form today.

Brühl’s Terrace

The riverside promenade offers a unique panorama of the river and the city.

The terrace is named after Heinrich von Brühl, a Saxon statesman who lived in the mid-18th century and had a great impact on the development of the area. It originally served as part of the city’s defensive walls in the 1500s but was later transformed and expanded to function as an elegant promenade for the urban elite.

Today it is home to several important buildings, such as the Academic Art University, the Painting Hall, the Albertinum Museum, and the former Wackerbarth Palace.

Kreuzkirche

One of Dresden’s iconic buildings that perfectly symbolizes the city’s history.

The church has been destroyed five times over the centuries and rebuilt five times. In its current form, it can be seen according to the plans of Schmid and Exner. The church burned out in 1945 and was restored by 1955.

The church has a characteristic tower that offers a stunning view of the city.

Großer Garten

Dresden’s largest and one of its most significant public parks, covering an area of approximately 1.8 square kilometers.

The park was created in the 17th century as a hunting park but was later transformed into a public venue. In the central part is the Sommerpalais, an elegant small castle that now functions as a museum and event venue.

There is also a small zoo and a botanical garden.
