Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) is Vietnam’s economic and cultural hub, where the French colonial past blends perfectly with modernity. The questions and answers below will help you navigate the most important things to know, whether it’s about visas, transportation, or the best time to travel.

Basic information

Why is it worth visiting Ho Chi Minh City?

Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam’s largest city, where the colonial past and the modern metropolitan experience blend into a unique mix.

Buildings from the French colonial era, such as Notre-Dame Cathedral or the Central Post Office, create a striking contrast with the Bitexco Financial Tower skyscraper. The city’s past is showcased by the War Remnants Museum and the Reunification Palace, while Ben Thanh Market and the bustling streets capture everyday Vietnamese life. The food scene is not to be missed either: from pho soup to fresh spring rolls and famous Vietnamese coffee, Ho Chi Minh City is one of the most exciting culinary destinations in Southeast Asia.

What time zone is Ho Chi Minh City located in?

Ho Chi Minh City is in the Indochina Time zone (ICT, UTC+7). Vietnam does not observe daylight saving time.

When is the best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City?

The dry season, generally between December and April, is considered the best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City, as this is when the chance of sudden downpours is lowest.

During the dry season, daytime temperatures typically range around 28–35°C, and humidity is lower than in the rainy months. This is ideal for sightseeing in the city and for excursions to the surrounding area, such as the Mekong Delta or the Cu Chi Tunnels.

The rainy season lasts roughly from May to November. During this time, short but heavy afternoon showers occur almost every day, usually clearing up within a few hours, after which the sun quickly comes out again. Temperatures remain high year-round, so Ho Chi Minh City can practically be visited at any time, as long as the traveler is prepared for the humid, tropical climate.

How many days should I spend in Ho Chi Minh City?

Generally, 2-3 days are recommended to explore Ho Chi Minh City, if the traveler is only interested in the most important downtown attractions.

In 2-3 days, you can comfortably see the historic downtown area (District 1) with Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Reunification Palace, and Ben Thanh Market, and it’s worth dedicating half a day to the War Remnants Museum and the Chinese quarter (Cho Lon). If a traveler spends 4–5 days in the city, there’s also time for a full-day excursion to the Cu Chi Tunnels or the floating markets of the Mekong Delta, which are a few hours away from downtown by car.

What is the official currency in Ho Chi Minh City?

The official currency of Ho Chi Minh City, and all of Vietnam, is the Vietnamese dong (VND).

For everyday purchases, at markets, and in street restaurants, payment is made almost exclusively in cash, so travelers should always carry enough local currency. Larger hotels, restaurants, and shopping malls generally also accept credit cards, and US dollars are also accepted in cash at some tourist locations, though usually at a less favorable exchange rate.

Here is a currency converter calculator where you can check the current exchange rate!

Do people speak English in Ho Chi Minh City?

Yes, in tourist areas, hotels, restaurants, and travel agencies, you can generally get by in English, but most locals speak only Vietnamese in everyday life.

At markets, smaller street restaurants, and in less touristy areas, staff may know only a few basic English words, or a translation app may be needed to communicate. Learning a few simple Vietnamese phrases can help a lot, for example: xin chào – hello; cảm ơn – thank you; bao nhiêu – how much does it cost?

What type of power outlet is used in Ho Chi Minh City?

Type A and C outlets are most commonly used in Ho Chi Minh City, and some newer hotels may also have Type G sockets.

European two-pin round plugs (Type C) can be inserted into most outlets without an adapter, since many places have universal sockets that accept both types. A travel adapter is nevertheless recommended, since older buildings and more rural accommodations may have only Type A (flat-pin) outlets.

In Ho Chi Minh City, as in all of Vietnam, the mains voltage is 220 volts at 50 Hz, which is very close to the 230 volts used in Europe.

How does internet and SIM card use work in Ho Chi Minh City?

Internet connectivity is generally good in Ho Chi Minh City, and the vast majority of hotels, cafés, and restaurants offer free Wi-Fi.

For continuous mobile internet access, it’s worth buying a local SIM card (Viettel, Mobifone, Vinaphone) or an eSIM, which is available both at the airport and in city shops, offering a large amount of data at an affordable price. An eSIM can even be purchased and activated online before your trip, so mobile internet is ready to use as soon as you arrive.

Is it customary to tip in Ho Chi Minh City?

Tipping is not mandatory in Vietnam, but it is an increasingly common and welcome gesture at tourist restaurants and services.

In restaurants, a tip of 5–10% of the bill is customary if the service charge is not already listed separately. It’s also customary to leave a small tip for drivers, porters, and tour guides if you were satisfied with the service, while tipping is less common at local street restaurants and markets.

Travel and transportation

How do I get from the airport to downtown Ho Chi Minh City?

Ho Chi Minh City’s international airport is Tan Son Nhat (SGN), just 7 kilometers from downtown District 1, so the city center is quickly accessible.

The most convenient option is a car or motorbike taxi booked through the Grab app, which offers a predictable price and a fixed route. Official airport taxis (Vinasun, Mai Linh) are also reliable, but it’s worth insisting on using the meter. The air-conditioned bus route 109 is the cheapest option, serving several points downtown, taking 30–45 minutes depending on traffic.

What is the most convenient way to get around Ho Chi Minh City?

For tourists, a car or motorbike taxi booked through the Grab app is the most convenient and widely used way to get around the city.

Traditional taxis (Vinasun, Mai Linh) are also reliable, especially at night or with luggage. The local bus network is very cheap, but often hard for tourists to navigate. At the end of 2024, the city’s first metro line (Bến Thành–Suối Tiên) opened, gradually playing an increasingly important role in transportation between downtown and the eastern districts. It’s important to know that a huge number of scooters travel through the city, so crossing the street may initially feel unusual: it’s best to cross slowly, at a steady pace, clearly visible against the traffic.

Accommodation and safety

Is Ho Chi Minh City a safe city?

Overall, Ho Chi Minh City is a safe destination for tourists, with a low rate of serious crime.

The most common problems are pickpocketing and bag or phone snatching from motorbikes, especially in bustling markets and busy streets. It’s worth keeping valuables close to your body in a closed bag, and not using your phone in your hand on the side facing the sidewalk.

Which neighborhoods are considered safe?

Among the areas most frequently chosen by visitors as safe are:

District 1 – the historic downtown, where most of the famous sights are located

District 3 – a quieter, charming neighborhood with cafés and restaurants

Thao Dien (Thu Duc City) – a green, elegant expat neighborhood with parks and international restaurants

These areas see significant tourist traffic and a strong police presence.

How safe is it at night?

In tourist areas, such as Bui Vien backpacker street, street life is lively even in the evening, with many restaurants and bars welcoming visitors.

Nevertheless, it’s worth staying on well-lit, busy streets, avoiding dark side streets, and using a Grab car or taxi instead of walking if you need to go further.

Which neighborhood is best to stay in Ho Chi Minh City?

For tourists, District 1, District 3, and the Thao Dien neighborhood are the most popular and convenient areas to stay in Ho Chi Minh City.

District 1 is the historic and touristic heart of the city, home to Notre-Dame Cathedral, Ben Thanh Market, and most of the hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues. If you want to be close to the main sights and do a lot of walking downtown, this is the best choice.

District 3 offers a quieter, more authentic atmosphere, with fewer tourists, charming specialty cafés, and proximity to the War Remnants Museum.

The Thao Dien neighborhood is located on the other side of the Saigon River, offering a greener, quieter environment with international restaurants and cafés, popular mainly among travelers staying longer or traveling with families, though it’s a bit further from downtown.

Health Information

Are vaccinations required for travel to Ho Chi Minh City?

There are no mandatory vaccinations for most tourists traveling to Ho Chi Minh City or Vietnam in general.

However, vaccination against hepatitis A and B, diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus (DTaP), and, for longer or rural trips, typhoid fever, is recommended.

Drinking tap water is not recommended in Ho Chi Minh City. Locals also typically drink bottled or filtered water.

Although the city’s water network is officially treated, contamination can enter the water along the way due to old pipes and storage conditions, which can cause stomach upset in travelers.

Most tourists use tap water for brushing their teeth without any issue, but those with a more sensitive stomach may prefer to use bottled water for this as well.

Is tap water safe to drink in Ho Chi Minh City?

Drinking tap water is not recommended in Ho Chi Minh City. Locals also typically drink bottled or filtered water.

Experiences

What are the must-see attractions in Ho Chi Minh City?

Ho Chi Minh City’s best-known attractions include Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Central Post Office, the Reunification Palace, the War Remnants Museum, and Ben Thanh Market, which showcase the city’s colonial past and turbulent history well.

Notre-Dame Cathedral was built between 1863 and 1880, entirely from materials imported from France. The red-brick basilica, with its two 40-meter towers, stands in the heart of District 1 and is one of the city’s most popular photo spots.

The Central Post Office was built according to designs by Gustave Eiffel between 1886 and 1891. In the spacious, vaulted hall, antique telephones and painted maps decorate the walls, offering a peaceful haven after a long day of sightseeing.

The Reunification Palace, also known as Independence Palace, was once the presidential residence of South Vietnam. In 1975, the Vietnam War symbolically ended here, when a North Vietnamese tank broke through the main gate. Today it’s open to visitors as a museum.

The War Remnants Museum presents the devastation of the Vietnam War and its impact on the civilian population with unflinching honesty, through photographs and original military equipment.

Ben Thanh Market is the bustling heart of the city, where a wealth of fresh food, handicrafts, and street food await visitors. In the evenings, the streets around the market also fill with street vendors.

Outside the city center, it’s worth dedicating a full day to the Cu Chi Tunnels, where you can see the underground tunnel system used by Viet Cong guerrillas, as well as the floating markets of the Mekong Delta, which offer a glimpse into a completely different, rural Vietnam.

What are the most popular foods and drinks in Ho Chi Minh City?

Ho Chi Minh City is famous for its rich and varied cuisine. The best-known local dishes include pho soup, banh mi sandwiches, and com tam, while iced milk coffee is the most popular drink.

Pho is a famous Vietnamese noodle soup, served with beef or chicken, fresh herbs, and rice noodles, and is also commonly eaten for breakfast.

Banh mi is a crispy sandwich born from the meeting of French colonial cuisine and Vietnamese flavors, typically filled with pâté, grilled meat, pickled vegetables, and coriander.

Com tam (broken rice) is a typically southern Vietnamese dish served with grilled pork, fried egg, and pickles, and is especially popular in Ho Chi Minh City.

Goi cuon, or fresh spring rolls, are made with rice paper wrapped around shrimp, pork, fresh vegetables, and vermicelli noodles, served with peanut sauce.

Among the drinks, ca phe sua da stands out, which is iced milk coffee made from strong Vietnamese coffee and condensed milk. Local beer (bia hoi), served fresh and cheap in street beer gardens, is also popular.

What important holidays and festivals are there in Ho Chi Minh City?

Holidays are celebrated year-round in Ho Chi Minh City, but the most important and impactful event is the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, Tet.

Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year) is generally held between late January and February and is the most important family holiday in Vietnam. During this time, the city’s streets are decorated with flowers, lanterns, and festive lights, though many shops and restaurants close for days as locals travel home to their families.

Reunification Day, celebrated on April 30, symbolizes the end of the Vietnam War and the reunification of the country. Military parades and national celebrations take place in the city at this time.

The Mid-Autumn Festival (Tet Trung Thu) takes place around September-October, when colorful lanterns, dragon dances, and the traditional mooncake, banh trung thu, characterize the mood of the streets, especially as a children’s festival.

Hanoi is the captivating capital of Vietnam, where ancient temples and French colonial architecture meet the bustle of open-kitchen narrow streets. The following questions and answers will help you navigate the most important information, whether about safety, transportation, or the best time to visit.

Basic information

What time zone is Hanoi in?

Hanoi is located in the Indochina Time zone (ICT, UTC+7). Vietnam does not observe daylight saving time.

When is the best time to visit Hanoi?

For visiting Hanoi, from October to late April cool, dry season is generally considered the best time to visit. The weather is pleasant, rainfall is low, and conditions are ideal for exploring the city.

The cool season (November–April) is Hanoi’s most pleasant period. Temperatures generally range between 15–25 °C, humidity is relatively low, making it ideal for sightseeing, walks and day trips in the surrounding area.

The hot summer (May–September) brings very hot and humid weather to Hanoi. Temperatures can exceed 35 °C, and heavy tropical downpours are common, mainly in the afternoon and evening. This period is less recommended, though lower prices and fewer tourists may compensate.

One of the most special times in the city is Tet holiday, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year (generally January or February). At this time, Hanoi’s streets are decorated with festive lights and floral ornaments; however, many shops are closed and the city is crowded – it is worth taking this into account when planning your trip.

How many days should you spend in Hanoi?

To explore Hanoi, at least 3–4 days are recommended. The dense streets, numerous historic districts and nearby excursion spots all justify spending this much time.

In 3 days you can generally fit in the most important sights. It is worth strolling around Hoan Kiem Lake, exploring the narrow streets of the Old Quarter, visiting the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, and stopping by the Nội Bà Đống Temple.

The 4–5 day stay allows you to explore the city at a more relaxed pace. There is time for a visit to the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, the Hoa Lo Prison, as well as a day trip to the surroundings, for example to the Ninh Binh region or Ha Long Bay.

What is the official currency in Hanoi?

The official currency of Hanoi is the Vietnamese dong (VND), which is used throughout the country.

Payment in Hanoi is mostly made in cash, especially at markets, street food stalls and smaller shops. ATMs are widely available throughout the city and generally offer the best exchange rates. Credit cards are accepted at larger restaurants, hotels and shopping centres, but should not be relied upon everywhere.

Here is a currency converter calculator where you can check the daily exchange rate!

Do people speak English in Hanoi?

In the tourist areas of Hanoi, especially in the Old Quarter, hotels and popular restaurants, English is generally spoken, but this is not always the case in everyday situations. Learning a few basic Vietnamese phrases can be very helpful.

Most of the younger generation and those working in the tourism sector understand and respond in English. However, at smaller markets, street food stalls or in residential city districts, English proficiency may be limited. In such cases, a translation app can be very useful for written communication.

What type of electrical outlets are used in Hanoi?

Vietnam primarily uses Type A, C and F electrical outlets. Type F matches the European standard, so most European devices can be connected without an adapter; however, modern hotels may also have Type A (flat-pin) sockets, which require an adapter.

The mains voltage in Vietnam is 220 Volts, 50 Hz, which is the same as in Europe so a voltage converter is generally not needed.

How does internet and SIM card usage work in Hanoi?

Internet connectivity in Hanoi is excellent, and free Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, cafés and restaurants. If you need continuous mobile internet, it is worth buying a local SIM card, which is extremely cheap and easy to obtain.

Local SIM cards (e.g., Viettel, Mobifone, Vinaphone) are available at the airport and can be obtained for a few euros with a 30-day unlimited data package. The eSIM option is also becoming increasingly widespread, which can be ordered and activated before leaving home. This is particularly convenient if you want to use mobile internet immediately on the plane or right after landing.

Is tipping customary in Hanoi?

Tipping is not as deeply rooted a tradition in Vietnam as it is in, say, Mexico, but in tourist areas and higher-end restaurants it is increasingly expected and gratefully received.

In restaurants, a tip of 5–10% of the bill is appropriate if you were satisfied with the service. For excursions, tipping is expected.

Travel and transportation

How do I get from the airport to the centre of Hanoi?

Hanoi’s main airport is Noi Bai International Airport (HAN), located approximately 35–45 kilometres from the downtown Old Quarter. Travel time can be 40–75 minutes depending on traffic, so it is worth planning your journey in advance.

Several bus routes operate from the airport to various parts of the city. Very cheap, but you should allow at least one hour of travel time. Tickets can be purchased on the bus from the conductor.

The Grab (Southeast Asia’s leading ride-hailing app) is one of the best options: the price is transparent, no haggling required, and it is safe. A Grab ride from the airport to the city centre costs around 250,000–300,000 dong.

What is the most convenient way to get around Hanoi?

Hanoi’s traffic may seem chaotic at first glance due to the enormous number of motorbikes and the unique traffic rules, but with a little experience travellers can navigate it with ease. For tourists, the ideal combination is Grab, a rented motorbike and walking.

The Grab app is one of the safest and most convenient options: you can order a car or motorbike, the price is shown upfront, and no haggling is required. In the Old Quarter, walking is often the best choice, as in the dense, narrow streets it is frequently faster than travelling by car.

For those who want to explore the city more adventurously, a rented motorbike is an excellent option: it offers flexible travel and the experience itself is a significant part of the adventure. However, it is important to be a confident rider and to follow the traffic rules.

Accommodation and safety

Is Hanoi a safe city?

Hanoi is generally a safe destination for tourists, particularly regarding violent crime. The biggest risks are pickpocketing and bag snatching from motorbikes, but with a little caution these can be easily avoided.

What should you watch out for?

Do not wear expensive jewellery or carry bags visibly on the street. Do not hold your phone openly in your hand on busy streets. Walking alone in unfamiliar districts at night requires caution.

Which neighbourhood is best to stay in Hanoi?

Among the best accommodation neighbourhoods in Hanoi are the Old Quarter, the area around Hoan Kiem Lake, and the Ba Dinh district. These are well located, have numerous attractions, restaurants and cafés, and are safer for tourists.

The Old Quarter is Hanoi’s most bustling and vibrant area: its narrow streets still contain lanes specialised in guild wares, and plenty of hostels, small hotels, restaurants and street food stalls await travellers. Those who truly want to experience the pulse of Hanoi’s daily life should stay here.

The area around Hoan Kiem Lake offers a pleasant middle ground between the bustle of the Old Quarter and the quieter parts of the city. It is close to the most important historical sights, while the lakeside promenade also provides a pleasant place to relax.

The Ba Dinh district is a quieter neighbourhood, home to premium hotels and close to embassies. It is ideal for those seeking a more comfortable, peaceful environment, while the Ho Chi Minh Complex is nearby.

Health information

Are mandatory vaccinations required to travel to Hanoi?

For travel to Hanoi, there is generally no mandatory vaccination required for Hungarian travellers; however, several vaccinations are strongly recommended, especially if you plan to make trips to rural areas.

The recommended vaccinations include hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and a tetanus booster.

Is tap water safe to drink in Hanoi?

Drinking tap water in Hanoi is not recommended. Most locals also use bottled or filtered water for drinking, and travellers are advised to do the same.

The maintenance of tap water and the age of the pipe network vary, which means contaminants may enter the water, potentially causing stomach and digestive complaints. Bottled water should be purchased from a reliable shop – it is also available in most hotels. Most tourists use tap water for brushing their teeth, but bottled water is recommended for this too if you have a sensitive stomach.

Experiences

What are the must-see attractions in Hanoi?

Among Hanoi’s most famous attractions are Hoan Kiem Lake and the Ngoc Son Temple, the street network of the Old Quarter, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the One Pillar Pagoda, the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology and Hoa Lo Prison. These places provide an excellent introduction to Hanoi’s rich history, culture and spirit.

The Hoan Kiem Lake is the soul of Hanoi: at the centre of the legendary lake stands the Ngoc Son Island Temple, connected to the shore by a red bridge. The promenade around the lake is packed with locals and tourists day and night – it is an excellent place to soak up the vibrant everyday life of Hanoi.

The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the surrounding complex (including the former presidential residence, the beautiful park and the One Pillar Pagoda) are a must-visit. To view Ho Chi Minh’s embalmed body in the mausoleum, appropriate dress is required (covered shoulders and knees).

The Hoa Lo Prison, sarcastically nicknamed the “Hanoi Hilton” by Americans during the Vietnam War, now operates as a museum. It is a moving and informative place to visit.

The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology displays the lives of the country’s 54 ethnic groups in stunning detail, with traditional buildings. It is especially recommended for those who want to learn more about Vietnamese culture.

What are the most popular foods and drinks in Hanoi?

Hanoi’s cuisine holds a distinguished place worldwide. The best-known dishes are pho soup, bún chả and bánh mì, while among the most popular drinks you will find bia hơi (beer) and cà phê trứng (egg coffee).

The pho is Vietnam’s national dish: a fragrant rice noodle soup made from beef bone broth, with fresh ginger, herbs and thin slices of beef or chicken. In Hanoi, pho has a slightly different taste from the southern version – it is lighter and contains fewer spices, but is still exceptionally flavourful.

The bánh mì is a delicious Vietnamese sandwich, typically made from a crispy baguette, various meats (such as pork or chicken), fresh vegetables and spicy sauces.

The bún chả is truly Hanoi’s local speciality: grilled pork meatballs and slices served with rice noodles in a tangy dipping sauce, salad and fresh herbs.

The cà phê trứng, the classic Hanoi coffee made with egg yolk cream and sugar. It is well worth trying at the original location, Giang Café!

What are the important holidays and festivals in Hanoi?

Hanoi hosts numerous important holidays and festivals throughout the year. Among the most well-known are the Tet holiday (Vietnamese Lunar New Year), Vietnamese National Day and various Buddhist festivals, which come alive around the pagodas and temples.

The Tet holiday is the Vietnamese lunar New Year, celebrated in early January or February. At this time, the streets are decorated with cherry and peach blossom trees, fireworks fill the air, and the whole city dresses up in a festive mood. However, many shops, restaurants and attractions are closed during Tet week – it is important to keep this in mind when planning.

The Vietnamese National Day (2 September) is Vietnam’s Independence Day, proclaimed by Ho Chi Minh in 1945. Ceremonies are held at Ba Dinh Square, and fireworks go off at various points around the city.

The Trung Thu Moon Festival (in autumn, at the time of the full moon) is primarily aimed at children, but the whole city celebrates: lantern processions, mooncake markets and colourful lanterns fill the streets of the Old Quarter with festive atmosphere.

Hoi An is primarily known for its lanterns lit up at night, its well-preserved old town, and its canals. If you are in Da Nang, be sure to take a trip here!

Hoi An is located on the central coast of Vietnam, in Quảng Nam Province, just 30 kilometers from Da Nang city. It has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1999 and preserves fascinating remnants of the golden age of trade between the 15th and 19th centuries. The harmonious blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, and French architectural styles makes Hoi An one of the country’s most romantic destinations.

Hoi An attractions

Old Town

The narrow streets and yellow-fronted buildings of the Old Town evoke the atmosphere of a centuries-old trading port. From the 15th to the 19th century, Hoi An was one of Southeast Asia’s most significant trading centers, where Chinese, Japanese, Dutch, and Portuguese merchants met.

Walking among more than a thousand protected buildings, visitors can discover old merchant houses, family temples, and assembly halls. The UNESCO World Heritage site is car-free during the day, and in the evening, thousands of lanterns illuminate the streets. Wall murals, bougainvillea flowers, and the riverside atmosphere make Hoi An one of Vietnam’s most photographed cities.

Chinese calligraphy and carved wooden ornaments are often visible on the walls of preserved buildings. The market, craft shops, and tailor workshops in the center of the Old Town keep the city’s traditional crafts alive, particularly the making of silk garments.

Chùa Cầu

The Japanese Covered Bridge or Chùa Cầu is Hoi An’s most famous symbol, built in 1593 by the Japanese community. This iconic structure also appears on the twenty-thousand dong banknote, demonstrating its national significance.

The 18-meter-long covered bridge connects two parts of the Old Town over a small tributary of the Thu Bon River. According to legend, the bridge sits on the body of a mythical monster, Namazu, whose head is in India, body in Japan, and tail in Vietnám – the bridge’s purpose was to restrain the monster’s movements.

A small pagoda stands in the middle of the bridge, originally dedicated to the water god, Tran Vo Bac De, and later converted to honor a Taoist deity. Dog and monkey statues stand at both ends of the bridge, referring to the fact that construction began in the year of the dog and ended in the year of the monkey according to the Chinese calendar.

There is also a legend associated with the bridge

Phuc Kien Chinese Assembly Hall

Built in 1697, this hall served as a meeting place for Chinese merchants from Fujian Province. The complex is dedicated to the sea goddess, Thien Hau Thanh Mau, revered as the patron saint of sailors.

The entrance to the main building is decorated with two huge dragons, symbols of fertility. In the inner sanctuary, beside the statue of the goddess, stand statues of Thuan Phong Nhi, goddess of favorable winds, and Thien Ly Nhan, goddess of distant vision. Huge incense spirals hang from the ceiling, burning for days and spreading a magical fragrance.

The hall’s special features include elaborate wooden ornamentation and ceramic decoration. The well in the center of the courtyard and bonsai trees create a peaceful atmosphere. Visitors can still observe local worshippers coming to pray and make offerings to the gods.

Tan Ky Old House

This nearly 200-year-old building was the home of a wealthy Vietnamese merchant family, inhabited by seven generations.

Built in 1741, the house is a perfect example of the fusion of Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese architectural styles. The elongated building facing two streets follows the traditional layout of merchant houses: front room for business, central courtyard, rear section for living quarters. The house has preserved its original furniture, porcelain collection, and objects documenting the family’s trade.

The ceiling beams are decorated with Chinese and Japanese-style carved joinery, while the walls feature poetic verses in Chinese calligraphy. A unique feature of the house is the three different types of roofs, symbolizing the wealth accumulation of three generations of the family. The carved wooden ornaments on windows and doors depict flower, fruit, and animal motifs, each with special symbolic meaning.

Phung Hung Old House

This nearly 230-year-old building was built around 1780 and is still inhabited by descendants of the Phung Hung family. The ground floor served as a herbal medicine shop, while the family lived upstairs – a typical arrangement for merchant houses of the period.

The two-story, 57-meter-long house rests on 80 hardwood pillars that provided protection against floods. The balcony is one of Hoi An’s most photographed spots, offering an unparalleled view of the Old Town’s bustling streets. Wall paintings and calligraphy immortalize Confucian values and the family’s history.

Inside, traditional Vietnamese furniture, altars, and family relics can be viewed. One of the most interesting details is the ancient well in the center of the courtyard, still used by the family. The red lanterns hanging from the roof and the flower-filled inner courtyard create a particularly atmospheric sight.

Quan Cong Temple

Built in 1653, this sanctuary commemorates General Quan Cong, one of the most famous military leaders in Chinese history and a symbol of loyalty.

Renovated several times over three centuries, it has retained its original Chinese-style architectural characteristics. In the temple’s central building stands a life-size statue of Quan Cong, depicted with a red face and impressive beard. Beside him are smaller replicas of his two companions, General Chau Xuong and Official Quan Binh.

The turtle statue in the courtyard symbolizes long life in Chinese culture. The temple remains an active religious site where Buddhist ceremonies are held and local community gatherings are organized.

Thu Bon River

For centuries, the river was the source of Hoi An’s vitality, connecting the city to the South China Sea and thus to world trade. In the 15th-19th centuries, a bustling port operated along the banks where Japanese, Chinese, and European ships loaded cargo.

Sunset is a particularly magical time when hundreds of lanterns light up in riverside restaurants and houses, casting their reflections on the water. During nighttime tours on traditional wooden-frame boats, tourists can release lanterns onto the water themselves, following a Buddhist tradition symbolizing good fortune and wishes.

Along the riverbank are numerous restaurants and cafés where, alongside local specialties, visitors can taste the French influences from the colonial period. Craft shops, galleries, and tailor workshops line the riverside promenade. The riverside view with the Chùa Cầu bridge and yellow-walled houses is one of Hoi An’s most memorable images.

The river has always been the center of life in Hoi An

Tran Family Temple

Built in 1802, this family sanctuary is home to over two centuries of traditions of the Tran clan.

Following Confucian traditions, the temple is a place of ancestor worship where family descendants gather twice a year, during the lunar new year and the Tet festival. The building’s architecture is simpler than that of the Chinese assembly halls.

The path from the entrance to the main altar symbolically represents the journey to the ancestors. In the interior, tablets line up honoring distinguished family members, with calligraphic wooden plaques preserving their names and merits. The temple still operates, with members of the Tran family regularly performing ceremonies and making offerings.

Night Market

Set up every evening in the heart of the Old Town, the market is one of Hoi An’s liveliest community spaces. Walking along the car-free section of Nguyen Hoang Street under the light of lanterns, visitors find rows of local craft products, food, and souvenir shops.

Among the street vendors are traditional Vietnamese paper lanterns in all sizes and colors, silk garments, embroidered fabrics, and handmade jewelry. The food selection is diverse: fresh spring rolls, bánh mì sandwiches, white rose dumplings (a Hoi An specialty), and cao lầu noodles – all local delicacies.

Museum of History and Culture

The two-story building, constructed in traditional Vietnamese architectural style, is itself historically significant, with its brick walls and carved wooden windows reflecting 19th-century style.

The museum aims to present Hoi An’s more than 2000-year history and archaeological findings from the Sa Huynh culture. The collection includes ceramic vessels, bronze objects, and jewelry from the Champa Kingdom period, testifying to early trade relations.

The exhibits showcase the city’s golden age in the 15th-19th centuries when it was a meeting place for international traders: Chinese porcelain, Japanese ceramics, and European glassware are all on display. The photo and document collection documents the restoration of the Old Town buildings and the process of obtaining UNESCO World Heritage status.

All information can be found here!

Precious Heritage Art Museum

French photographer Réhahn opened this unique gallery in 2017, documenting the culture of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic groups.

The artist spent more than a decade traveling remote mountainous regions to collect portraits and cultural artifacts to preserve disappearing traditions. On the museum’s three floors, more than 100 large-format photographs and several hundred authentic folk art objects can be viewed.

The collection includes traditional textiles, jewelry, musical instruments, and religious objects that the artist collected directly from communities, respecting their cultural significance. Particularly noteworthy is the collection of rare, hand-woven garments and headdresses, some of which are over 100 years old. The exhibition is organized chronologically and geographically, presenting the history and characteristics of each ethnic group in separate sections.

Admission is free!

All information can be found here!

Hoi An weather: when is the best time to visit?

Hoi An has a tropical monsoon climate that can be divided into two main seasons: dry and rainy periods. The average annual temperature ranges between 25-29°C without significant seasonal fluctuations, so warm weather characterizes the city year-round. Humidity is generally high, especially during the rainy season when it can reach 85-90%.

Dry season (February–August):

This period is ideal for beach activities and sightseeing, with little precipitation and more sunny hours. Temperatures range between 28-35°C, with June and July being the hottest months. During the hot summer months, the heat can sometimes be burdensome, but sea breezes and air-conditioned spaces provide relief.

Rainy season (September–January):

Most precipitation concentrates between September and November, when monsoon rains are frequent and occasional typhoons occur. October and November are particularly critical when flooding can occur near the Thu Bon River. December and January are drier but may still have occasional rain.

Best time to travel Hoi An:

The most favorable period to visit Hoi An is between February and April and between August and early September. February through April features pleasant temperatures around 25-30°C, low humidity, and little precipitation – ideal for city tours and visiting nearby Cua Dai or An Bang beaches. During this period, the sea is also pleasant, with temperatures around 24-26°C. Late August and early September are also good choices when the summer heat has subsided but the monsoon peak season has not yet begun.

Hue and its surroundings are home to countless historical monuments, imperial tombs, pagodas, and monasteries, making it an unmissable Vietnamese destination for tourists.

Hue, Vietnam’s former imperial capital, is located in the central part of the country, north of Da Nang. The Nguyen Dynasty ruled here from 1802 to 1945, leaving behind an immense cultural heritage. Hue’s unique atmosphere is born from a blend of past and present: magnificent royal architecture, Buddhist spirituality, and local gastronomy together create the magic that makes this UNESCO World Heritage site worth visiting.

Imperial City

The 19th-century fortification was the political and ceremonial center of the Nguyen Dynasty from 1802 until 1945. The complex covers approximately 520 hectares, surrounded by walls and moats, perfectly reflecting ancient Chinese urban architectural traditions.

The former imperial quarter is divided into several parts: the Citadel is the outer defense line, within which lies the Imperial City, followed by the even more strictly guarded Forbidden Purple City, where only the emperor, his family, and immediate entourage could enter. It suffered severe damage during the 1968 offensive, with only 10 of 160 buildings remaining intact, but continuous restoration work has been ongoing since then.

Visitors enter through the Ngo Mon gate, while the Thai Hoa Palace served as a ceremonial hall where emperors received their subjects. The complex has been part of UNESCO World Heritage since 1993 and is today one of Hue’s most important tourist destinations, where the glory and tragedy of feudal Vietnam comes alive.

Thien Mu Pagoda

The Buddhist sanctuary founded in 1601 is one of Hue’s most iconic symbols, located on the northern bank of the Perfume River atop a hill. According to legends, an elderly woman prophesied that a ruler would build a temple here for the nation’s prosperity.

The pagoda’s most famous structure is the Phuoc Duyen Tower, built in 1844 during Emperor Thieu Tri’s reign. The 21-meter-high, seven-tiered octagonal tower has each level dedicated to a different Buddha, and the building has become Hue’s unofficial symbol. The complex also houses a 2-ton bronze bell cast in 1710.

The pagoda holds political significance as well: in 1963, Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc departed from here to Saigon, where he committed self-immolation in protest of the South Vietnamese government’s anti-Buddhist policies. The car he used to reach the site is still preserved on the pagoda grounds.

Khai Dinh’s Tomb

The imperial mausoleum built between 1920 and 1931 is the last large-scale tomb construction of the Nguyen Dynasty. Emperor Khai Dinh, who ruled from 1916 to 1925, cooperated closely with French colonizers, which made him unpopular among his people.

The tomb complex is the smallest among imperial tombs, occupying only 117 x 48.5 meters, yet it was also the most expensive: construction took 11 years, and to finance the project, taxes were raised by 30%. The mausoleum uniquely blends Eastern and Western stylistic elements – Hindu, Buddhist, Roman, and Gothic architectural motifs intermingle.

The Thien Dinh Palace is the complex’s highlight, where lavish mosaic decorations, glass and porcelain inlays cover the walls and ceiling. The interior space creates a sharp contrast with the gray concrete exterior surfaces. 127 steps lead up the hill to the memorial, surrounded by Vietnam’s largest dragon sculptures. The emperor’s bronze statue, made in France, still stands on the altar, with his earthly remains resting beneath.

The last great tomb of the imperial dynasty

Duc Duc’s Tomb

The memorial to one of the Nguyen Dynasty’s shortest-reigning emperors, who stood at the throne for only three days in 1883. After being deposed, he was forced into exile, and his son, Emperor Thanh Thai, built this worthy resting place for him.

The mausoleum is more modest in design than other dynasty rulers’ tomb complexes, reflecting Duc Duc’s tragic fate and brief reign. The area is quiet and less frequently visited, lending it a special atmosphere – nature has already partially reclaimed this place.

The architectural layout follows the logic of traditional Vietnamese tomb complexes: with a ceremonial courtyard, stele, and the actual burial site. The surrounding vegetation and ivy-covered buildings exude a peculiar melancholic mood, making it a unique highlight among Hue’s imperial cemeteries.

Minh Mang’s Tomb

The second emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty’s mausoleum was built between 1840 and 1843 on the western bank of the Perfume River, on Cam Ke Hill. Minh Mang, who ruled from 1820 to 1840, began designing his final resting place himself, but after his death, his son Emperor Thieu Tri completed the work.

The 18-hectare complex consists of 40 different structures arranged in perfect symmetry, in accordance with Confucian principles and feng shui rules. The Dai Hong Mon triple-arched main gate is the entrance, which was opened only once: when the emperor’s coffin was brought in. The complex is adorned with lakes, bridges, and pavilions, while the central Minh Lau Pavilion consists of three terraces, symbolizing heaven, earth, and water.

The crescent-shaped Tan Nguyen island surrounding the tomb complex and the circularly placed Buu Thanh wall protect the emperor’s actual burial site, where the ruler’s earthly remains were interred. The area harmoniously blends natural and artificial landscapes: pine forests, lotus lakes, and imposing structures together create a breathtaking composition. The mausoleum can rightfully be considered one of the finest examples of Nguyen-era architecture.

Gia Long’s Tomb

The first Nguyen emperor, Gia Long (1802-1820), has his mausoleum located nearly 15 kilometers from Hue’s center, far from civilization, in a secluded valley. The emperor unified Vietnam in 1802, founding the dynasty that ruled until 1945.

The tomb complex covers approximately 67 hectares and is one of the least restored imperial tombs in Hue. This lends it a special authentic character: the jungle is slowly reclaiming the territory, many of the mausoleum’s structures are crumbling, overgrown with vegetation. The site is essentially divided into two parts: on one side rests Gia Long, on the other his first wife, Empress Tu Thuan.

The complex consists of lakes, pavilions, and ceremonial courtyards connected by footpaths. Due to its difficult accessibility and more abandoned nature, this tomb complex is less known among tourists, but for that very reason offers a special experience.

Tu Duc’s Tomb

The mausoleum built between 1864 and 1867 is the most poetic and beloved memorial among Nguyen emperors. Emperor Tu Duc (1848-1883) designed this incomparably beautiful complex himself, which also served as his favorite refuge during his lifetime.

The tomb complex consists of approximately 50 buildings, surrounded by a lake system, pine forests, and pavilions. On the shore of the central Luu Khiem Lake stands the Xung Khiem Pavilion, where the emperor recited poems and played chess with his favorites. The Minh Khiem royal theater is also visible here, with intricate carvings on its columns and sun, moon, and star representations on its ceiling.

The tomb area includes the Bi Dinh Pavilion, which houses Vietnam’s largest stele – weighing 20 tons. Tu Duc wrote his own epitaph on it, candidly acknowledging his mistakes during his reign. An interesting historical mystery surrounds the emperor’s actual burial place: his body was secretly interred, and all servants were executed so no one would know where he truly rests. Today the mausoleum is an empty tomb, but visitors still have an impressive experience in this historical park.

It was Emperor Tu Duc’s favorite place

Truong Tien Bridge

The steel-structured bridge inaugurated in 1899 is one of the most significant structures of the French colonial period in Hue. It was designed by Gustave Eiffel’s architectural firm, which previously became famous for building the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

The 402.6-meter-long and 6-meter-wide bridge consists of six steel arches spanning the Perfume River, connecting Hue’s city center with the northern districts. The structure has been renovated and rebuilt several times over time, especially after the Vietnam War when it suffered significant damage.

The bridge is not only a practical transportation facility but has also become one of the city’s symbols, frequently seen on postcards and tourist materials. At night it is specially illuminated, providing a stunning sight, especially when viewed from the river.

The most famous bridge over the Perfume River

Hue Walking Street (Đường đi bộ Huế)

The pedestrian zone in the city center opened in 2017. The walking street is located on Pham Ngu Lao Street, near Trang Tien Bridge.

The area is liveliest on weekends and holidays, when street performers, musicians, and artists fill the surroundings with life. Restaurants, cafes, and street food stands line the street, where local specialties can be tasted. The walking street is a popular meeting point among young people.

Dong Ba Market

Hue’s largest and oldest market has been operating since 1887 and is an authentic venue for local culture and gastronomy. The market covers 15,600 square meters, between Gia Hoi and Truong Tien bridges, on the northern bank of the Perfume River.

At the center of the three-story building stands a bell tower, surrounded by shops arranged in a U-shape. On the first floor, fresh seafood, dried delicacies, and Hue specialties such as fermented fish sauces are available. On the second floor, handicraft products – ceramics, traditional „nón lá” conical hats, and embroidered áo dài dresses – can be found. On the third floor, clothing and textile goods shops operate.

In the morning, masses of locals flock here for fresh ingredients, while by afternoon tourists take over, seeking souvenirs and local flavors. It’s recommended to arrive after 3 PM when the heat subsides and bargaining is easier. The market offers authentic culinary experiences: bun bo Hue (spicy beef noodle soup), com hen (clam rice), or banh khoai (crispy pancake) can all be tasted here.

Đài Tưởng niệm Chiến Sĩ Trận Vong

The fallen heroes’ memorial commemorates Vietnamese soldiers who fell fighting for their homeland in various wars.

The monument reminds us of Hue’s darker historical side, especially the 1968 offensive, during which one of the city’s most severe battles was fought. Its design is simple: central columns and statues decorate it, symbolizing military sacrifice.

Visiting the monument, we can understand that Hue was not only a site of imperial splendor but also the scene of one of modern Vietnamese history’s most important battles, which left deep marks on the city and its residents’ lives.

Temple of Literature

This Confucian sanctuary is a symbol of respect for Vietnamese education and scholarship. The institution created during the Nguyen Dynasty was part of the imperial academy, where the most outstanding scholars and mandarin officials were honored.

The structure follows traditional Confucian temple architecture: ceremonial courtyards, pavilions, and steles line it. The stone tablets were engraved with the names of scholars who successfully passed imperial examinations and who were guardians of Vietnamese culture.

Bao Vinh

The historic trading village on the Perfume River’s bank is located a few kilometers from Hue. The settlement established in the 17th century played an important role in international trade, especially in business with Chinese and Japanese merchants.

The village still preserves its unique architectural atmosphere: narrow streets, traditional houses, and ancient temples. Bao Vinh’s distinctive feature is that it has remained relatively untouched by modernization, providing an authentic picture of old Vietnamese village life.

The village’s residents practice traditional crafts – pottery, carpentry, and blacksmithing – and visitors can witness these old techniques. It’s an ideal choice for those who want to get away from Hue’s bustling center and gain deeper insight into the local way of life.

Thien An Monastery

The Buddhist monastery occupies a special place in Hue’s religious life. It is home to numerous monks and novices who study, meditate, and preserve Buddhist teachings here.

The monastery’s buildings represent traditional Vietnamese Buddhist architecture, surrounded by beautiful gardens. The monks living on the grounds form a welcoming community, and occasionally visitors also have the opportunity to participate in Buddhist ceremonies or meditation practices.

Hồ Thuỷ Tiên

The mysterious, abandoned amusement park is one of Hue’s most unusual attractions. It opened in 2004, but due to financial problems closed just a few years later, and since then nature has begun reclaiming the area.

The park’s central element is a massive dragon head rising from the waters of Thuy Tien Lake. Inside the structure, an aquarium once operated, but today it’s empty and ruined. The surrounding buildings – the former amphitheater, water slides, and other facilities – all bear signs of decay.

The site has become popular among photographers and adventure seekers, as it offers a unique spectacle. Visitors should be cautious, as the ruined buildings can be dangerous. The place creates an interesting contrast with Hue’s magnificent historical monuments.

Ho Chi Minh Museum

The museum presents the life and legacy of Ho Chi Minh, the founder of modern Vietnam. The president spent 10 years in Hue, where he studied and his political views were formed.

The exhibition contains photographs, documents, and personal items that provide insight into Ho Chi Minh’s life and the Vietnamese independence movement. The museum also displays the tools and writings through which the president communicated with his followers and organized the Viet Minh movement.

During the visit, we can understand Ho Chi Minh’s role in Vietnamese history and how his personality was shaped during the struggle against French colonization. The museum is an interesting complement to Hue’s imperial past, as both the collapse of the feudal world and the birth of the modern nation-state come alive here.

Huong Antique Pottery Museum

The museum presents the history of ceramic production in Hue and surrounding regions. Among the exhibited items are imperial porcelain, everyday dishes, and ritual ceramics, all reflecting the richness of local craftsmanship.

During the Nguyen Dynasty, Hue was famous for its fine porcelain, which was often used in imperial palaces. The museum’s pieces come from different eras, showing the development of styles and techniques.

The exhibition’s special value is that it not only displays finished items but also provides insight into the production process. The tools with which potters worked are visible, as well as ancient kilns used to create these artistic works.

Hue weather: when is the best time to visit?

Hue’s climate is tropical monsoon in character, which can be divided into four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The weather’s peculiarity is that there are significant differences in precipitation amounts and temperature conditions throughout the year.

Spring (January-April):

The most pleasant period in Hue, when average temperatures range around 20-25°C. The air is dry, sunshine is abundant, and rain is minimal, creating ideal conditions for outdoor programs. Nature blooms at this time, and the surroundings of imperial tomb complexes and pagodas are particularly stunning. Between February and April, exploring the city offers the best possible experience.

Summer (May-August):

The hot season, when temperatures can reach 35-40°C. Although precipitation is low, the heat and humidity can be uncomfortable for extended outdoor programs. Clear, blue skies and constant sunshine characterize the summer months. Those who can handle the heat will encounter fewer tourists and get better prices on accommodations.

Autumn (September-October):

The transitional period when the monsoon season begins. Temperatures are still pleasant, around 25-28°C, but rain becomes increasingly frequent. By October, significant precipitation must be expected.

Winter (November-December):

The wettest period, when Hue experiences frequent and prolonged rains. Temperatures range around 18-22°C, but high humidity makes it feel cold. Flooding is also characteristic of this period, which can make transportation difficult. Tourist numbers are low during this time, so prices are lower, but due to weather unpredictability, it’s only recommended for those who don’t mind rain and dampness.

Best time to travel:

The most ideal time to visit Hue is between January and April, when the weather is pleasant, dry, and sunny. During this period, average temperatures range between 20-24°C, which is perfect for sightseeing, visiting imperial tombs, and discovering natural attractions.

Da Nang is one of the most dynamically developing cities in central Vietnam. It is becoming increasingly popular among tourists as it blends traditional and modern culture.

Due to Da Nang’s location, it serves as a perfect starting point for visiting the region’s UNESCO World Heritage sites. The 19th-century French colonization can still be discovered throughout the city today.

Da Nang attractions

Da Nang Cathedral

One of the city’s most iconic religious buildings was constructed during the French colonial period in 1923.

The pink-facade neo-Gothic church, locally known as Rooster Church, is the spiritual center of Da Nang’s Christian community. At the top of the 70-meter-high bell tower sits a rooster-shaped weathervane, which gives the building its distinctive character.

The cathedral’s interior is decorated with impressive stained glass windows and traditional Catholic symbols. In the garden surrounding the church, visitors can admire the statue of the French Virgin Mary and other religious art pieces.

Dragon Bridge

Da Nang’s modern symbol, which opened in 2013 and has since become one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions.

The 666-meter-long bridge spans the Han River and mimics the form of a giant dragon, which is a symbol of luck and strength in Vietnamese culture. The bridge’s specialty is that on Saturday and Sunday evenings at 9:00 PM, the dragon’s head breathes fire and sprays water, providing a spectacular show for spectators. The bridge’s LED lighting creates magical lights over the city in the evening.

The area around the bridge is a popular walking spot with excellent views of the river and the city.

The iconic bridge of Da Nang

Sun World Asia Park

One of Da Nang’s largest and most modern entertainment centers opened its doors in 2014.

The massive amusement park offers more than 20 exciting games and attractions for all age groups, from child-friendly carousels to adrenaline-pumping roller coasters. One of the most unique experiences is the Queen’s Crown Wheel, a 115-meter-high Ferris wheel offering wonderful views of Da Nang and the surrounding mountains. The park is divided into themed zones that evoke the atmosphere of different countries and cultures.

Ngũ Hành Sơn

The group of five limestone and marble mountains is one of Da Nang’s most sacred and mystical locations.

Also known as the „Marble Mountains”, these peaks symbolize the five primordial elements – earth, water, fire, wood, and metal – in Vietnamese philosophy. Each mountain boasts numerous caves, temples, and pagodas that Buddhist monks have developed over centuries. The most famous is Thuy Son, which represents water and contains the most attractions.

One of the most impressive experiences is the Huyen Khong cave, where sunlight filters through ceiling openings creating a mystical atmosphere. From the mountains, a beautiful panorama unfolds of Da Nang city and the sea. The marble carving workshops operating in the area showcase the work of local craftsmen.

There is a church on every mountain

Son Tra Peninsula

A nature reserve located just a few kilometers from Da Nang’s shores, boasting pristine natural beauty.

The peninsula, nicknamed „Monkey Mountain”, is covered with dense tropical rainforest where rare plant and animal species live, including endemic red-faced macaques. From the peak of the 696-meter-high Son Tra mountain, a breathtaking 360-degree panorama opens up to the sea and Da Nang city. The peninsula has several hiking trails offering different difficulty levels of hiking opportunities.

Along the shores of the Son Tra Peninsula, crystal-clear water bays and pristine beaches can be found, providing perfect spots for relaxation and diving. Due to the area’s rich marine life, it’s a popular destination among nature photographers and water sports enthusiasts.

Wonderful views

Linh Ung Pagoda

The impressive Buddhist temple located on the Son Tra Peninsula is one of Da Nang’s most beautiful religious buildings.

The modern pagoda built in 2010 stands at the highest point of the peninsula and is visible from afar due to its massive 67-meter-high Quan Am statue. The white statue depicting the Goddess of Mercy is Vietnam’s largest such creation and is revered as the protector of seafarers. The temple complex is situated among beautiful gardens.

The pagoda’s architecture combines traditional Vietnamese and Buddhist style elements with modern features. The main building boasts ornately carved columns, colorful dragon motifs, and gilded details. The continuously rising fragrance from the bell tower and incense burners in the temple courtyard creates an excellent atmosphere.

Heroic Mother Memorial

The monumental work standing in central Da Nang commemorates the mothers who fought heroically during the Vietnam War.

The memorial unveiled in 2013 was created by sculptor Nguyen Thanh Thu and depicts a mother embracing her son who became a soldier. The 12-meter-high bronze statue is a symbol of the Vietnamese people’s resistance.

The park surrounding the memorial is a popular meeting place for locals, especially in the evenings. Memorial ceremonies and cultural events are regularly held in the area.

My Khe Beach

Da Nang’s world-famous sand beach, which has been ranked among the world’s most beautiful beaches multiple times.

The 20-kilometer-long, wide sandy shore boasts crystal-clear water and fine, white sand. The beach provides ideal conditions for sunbathing, swimming, and various water sports.

My Khe Beach has excellent infrastructure: clean changing rooms, showers, sun loungers, and umbrellas are available for visitors. The beach offers safe swimming opportunities.

The most famous beach in Da Nang

Mân Thái Beach

Another well-known beach in Da Nang that is quieter and less crowded.

Compared to My Khe Beach, this is a more peaceful beach, ideal for those who want to spend their seaside days in a more tranquil environment. There are fewer commercial facilities along the shore, so the original Vietnamese seaside atmosphere is better preserved. The water here is also crystal clear, the sand fine and golden, creating perfect conditions for relaxation.

It’s particularly popular among local fishermen who set out to sea at dawn and return in the afternoon with their fresh catch. Visitors can observe traditional fishing methods and even buy fresh fish directly from the fishermen. Small, family-style restaurants operate around the beach.

Cham Da Nang Museum

One of Vietnam’s most significant museums showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Cham civilization.

The museum preserves more than 400 original Cham artworks, including sculptures, reliefs, and religious objects created between the 5th and 19th centuries. The exhibited pieces originate from the My Son Sanctuary and other Cham archaeological sites, representing irreplaceable treasures of South Asian art history. The collection is particularly rich in Hindu and Buddhist-inspired sculptures.

The museum building itself is of monument value, built in French colonial style. The museum makes historical learning experiential with interactive presentations and audiovisual materials.

Mikazuki Water Park

Da Nang’s newest and most modern water entertainment center, boasting Japanese technology and design elements.

The water park opened in 2018 offers more than 20 different water attractions, from adrenaline-pumping giant slides to family-friendly pools. One of the park’s most unique elements is the artificial wave pool that generates waves of different intensities every hour. A separate water playground is available for children in a safe environment with colorful water games and smaller slides.

The park’s design combines modern Japanese aesthetics with Vietnamese natural elements, creating a unique atmosphere. The water park operates year-round.

Golden Bridge

The viewing bridge is located not far from Da Nang in the Ba Na Hills and is a world-famous structure.

The 150-meter-long pedestrian bridge’s uniqueness lies in the giant stone hand sculptures that support it, as if a giant were lifting it into the air. The bridge is located at 1,400 meters altitude, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

You can reach it by cable car from Ba Na Hills, which is an unforgettable experience in itself. French-style buildings can be found around the bridge, evoking the atmosphere of the colonial era. Due to the bridge’s popularity, there is particularly heavy traffic on weekends and holidays, so it’s worth arriving early to take the best photos.

Hoi An

Located only 30 kilometers from Da Nang, this UNESCO World Heritage city is one of Vietnam’s best-preserved historic settlements.

Nicknamed the „City of Lanterns”, Hoi An is a former trading port city that flourished from the 15th to 19th centuries. The narrow streets of the old town are lined with yellow-walled, traditionally built houses decorated with colorful lanterns and flower-filled balconies. The settlement stretching along the Thu Bon River gets its special atmosphere from ancient temples, timber-framed houses, and French colonial buildings.

Hoi An is famous for its handicraft traditions, especially silk weaving and lantern making. Visitors can participate in craft workshops where they can learn these ancient crafts. In the evenings, the city swims in lantern light, and colorful lanterns float on the river, creating a magical atmosphere.

Hue

Vietnam’s former imperial capital is only two hours from Da Nang and preserves the magnificent heritage of the Nguyen Dynasty.

The city stretching along the banks of the Perfume River was the imperial seat from 1802 to 1945 and boasts historical monuments worthy of this status. The massive imperial citadel complex includes more than 100 buildings, including throne halls, temples, pavilions, and gardens. The UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most complete and impressive examples of Asian court culture.

Hue is not only historically significant but also stands out gastronomically compared to other regions of Vietnam. The refined food culture of the imperial court still lives on in the local cuisine, where visitors can taste bun bo Hue soup and other court specialties. Numerous imperial tombs can be found around the city.

My Son Sanctuary

Located about 70 kilometers from Da Nang, this ancient Cham religious center is one of Vietnam’s most important archaeological sites.

The sanctuary complex, which operated from the 4th to 14th centuries, was the center of Hindu religious life in the Cham kingdom. The temples and towers built of red brick served to worship the god Shiva and represent the most refined examples of Champa architecture. Although the complex suffered significant damage during the Vietnam War, the remaining ruins still provide an impressive sight today.

The Sanctuary consists of about 70 buildings, which archaeologists divide into eight different groups. Each group originates from different periods, so visitors can follow the development of Cham art. The sanctuary is surrounded by dense jungle, which lends a mystical atmosphere to the site.

Da Nang weather: when is the best time to visit?

Da Nang has a tropical monsoon climate, which means warm and humid weather year-round, with distinct dry and rainy seasons.

Dry season (January-August):

The dry period is the most ideal time to visit Da Nang, when there is little precipitation and pleasant temperatures. From January to March, the weather is particularly pleasant, with temperatures around 20-25°C and low humidity. From April to August, the weather gradually warms up, with temperatures expected between 28-35°C. This period is perfect for beaching, sightseeing, and outdoor activities.

Rainy season (September-December):

The rainy season begins in September and lasts until December, when frequent showers and occasional typhoons can occur. The average temperature ranges between 24-28°C, but due to high humidity, the perceived temperature may be higher. October and November have the heaviest rainfall, which can last for days. While this period is less suitable for beaching, nature is at its greenest and freshest during this time.

Best time to travel to Da Nang:

For visiting Da Nang, the dry season, especially between February and July is recommended, when the least precipitation is expected and the weather is most pleasant. The cherry blossom period in March and April creates a particularly wonderful atmosphere in the city.

Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam’s economic center, where both the colonial past and modern present can be found. There are countless impressive attractions while visiting the former Saigon!

Vietnam’s largest city is located in the southern part of the country, on the banks of the Saigon River. Known as Prey Nokor, it was Cambodia’s most important port until the Vietnamese occupied it in the 16th century. Until 1954, it was part of French Indochina, and until 1975, until the end of the Vietnam War, it was the capital of South Vietnam.

Ho Chi Minh City attractions

Notre-Dame Cathedral

One of Vietnam’s most famous and iconic religious buildings is an outstanding architectural memorial of the French colonial period.

The cathedral was built between 1863 and 1880 by French colonizers, entirely from imported materials. The red brick facade, the two 40-meter towers, and the huge rose window were inspired by the Notre-Dame in Paris. What makes this building special is that all construction materials were shipped from France, including the red bricks, which still retain their original color to this day.

The interior of the cathedral is impressive: a high vaulted ceiling, colorful stained glass windows, and a statue of the Virgin Mary welcome visitors. The statue of the Virgin Mary in front of the church allegedly shed tears in 1959, which started a major pilgrimage. The area around the cathedral is still one of the most romantic places in the city and a popular photo location.

Saigon Central Post Office

One of Ho Chi Minh City’s most beautiful colonial buildings still operates in its original function.

The post office, built between 1886 and 1891, was designed by Gustav Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower. Behind the neoclassical facade, a spacious, elegant hall welcomes visitors. The high, vaulted ceiling, classic columns, and painted maps offer an impressive sight. In the center of the building is a portrait of Ho Chi Minh, while the walls are decorated with antique telephone sets and vintage letter scales.

There are also small souvenir shops in the building where visitors can purchase unique, Vietnam-themed memorabilia.

One of the most beautiful post office buildings in the world

Independence Palace

One of the city’s most important historical sites and a defining building in Vietnamese history.

On the site of what is also known as the Reunification Palace, the residence of the French Governor-General once stood. The current palace was completed in 1966 in a modernist style, designed by architect Ngo Viet Thu. The building became a symbol of Vietnam’s war history when North Vietnamese tanks broke through its gates on April 30, 1975, effectively ending the war.

The interior of the palace provides a unique insight into the daily life of the former South Vietnamese president. Visitors can see the presidential office, bedrooms, luxury banquet halls, and the underground bunker system where the communication center operated during the war. The huge garden surrounding the palace is decorated with exotic plants and sculptures.

The Vietnam War ended here

„Book Street”

This charming street is located right next to Notre Dame Cathedral and the Main Post Office. This pedestrian street is a real cultural oasis in the middle of the bustling city, where visitors can immediately escape the noise of motor traffic.

Shaded by leafy trees, the 100-meter-long promenade is lined with bookstores, publishers’ pavilions, and stylish open-air cafes. The location is not only a paradise for book lovers, but also an excellent photo opportunity, thanks to its changing decor that combines modern and vintage elements.

It is worth taking a break here after a sightseeing tour and picking up some special souvenirs, postcards, or English-language books. The peaceful atmosphere and the aroma of fresh Vietnamese coffee provide an unforgettable experience for every traveler.

Saigon Skydeck

One of Ho Chi Minh City’s most modern and spectacular buildings offers a wonderful panorama of the metropolis.

Located on the 49th floor of the Bitexco Financial Tower, the Skydeck is 262 meters high and provides a 360-degree view of the city and the winding Saigon River. The building’s special lotus flower-inspired form is one of the masterpieces of modern Vietnamese architecture. The helicopter landing pad, which encircles the tower as a protruding platform, is a particularly distinctive element of the building.

Next to the observation deck is the World of Heineken experience center, which presents the history of beer brewing, and the entrance fee includes a refreshing drink.

Japan Town

Hidden behind Le Thanh Ton and Thai Van Lung streets is the Japanese quarter known as „Little Tokyo.” This labyrinthine system of alleys transports travelers to a completely different world, creating a sharp contrast to the usual hustle and bustle of the Vietnamese metropolis.

The narrow streets are decorated with red lanterns, illuminated neon signs, and traditional wooden portals, which create a truly magical atmosphere after dark. The area is a gastronomic stronghold: countless authentic ramen bars, sushi restaurants, and smoky izakayas await fans of Asian cuisine.

Exploring the neighborhood is an exciting adventure, where walking among the hidden bars and small shops makes you feel as if you have been transported to Japan for a moment.

Bùi Viện

The undisputed center of Ho Chi Minh City’s nightlife is the main street of the infamous „backpacker district”.

During the day, it is relatively quiet, but after sunset, the area is transformed into a pulsating party zone bathed in neon lights, which is the number one meeting place for tourists and local youth.

On weekends, when traffic is banned, the street becomes one huge open-air entertainment venue. The sidewalks are lined with characteristic low plastic chairs where visitors can enjoy cheap local beers and street food specialties.

Ben Thanh Market

The city’s most famous and iconic market has been the heart of local commercial life for centuries.

The history of the market dates back to the 17th century when it was still a gathering place for informal street vendors. The current building was completed in 1912 in French colonial style and has become one of the most recognizable symbols of the city. The characteristic clock tower above the main entrance is visible from afar.

In the huge covered hall, thousands of merchants offer their goods, from fresh food to handicrafts and all kinds of souvenirs. Bargaining is a fundamental part of the shopping process here.

Cu Chi Tunnels

A historical site about 70 km from Ho Chi Minh City, which is one of the most important memorials of the Vietnam War.

The tunnel system, originally more than 250 kilometers long, was built by Viet Cong guerrillas during the French colonial period and was significantly expanded during the American war. This complex was a real underground city with kitchens, hospitals, weapons depots, and dormitories. The tunnels were so narrow that American soldiers couldn’t fit in, while the smaller Vietnamese fighters could easily move through them.

Visitors today can see part of the tunnels, which have been expanded for tourists but still provide a claustrophobic experience. The complex showcases the traps, weapons, and everyday tools used by the guerrillas. Spectacular demonstrations show how the guerrillas hid and used ingenious methods to resist the overwhelming enemy.

Jade Emperor Pagoda

One of the city’s most beautiful and important Buddhist temples.

The pagoda, built in 1909, was originally erected by the Cantonese Chinese community in honor of the deity Ngoc Hoang. The richly decorated pagoda is a masterpiece of Chinese architecture and art, with its roof adorned with colorful ceramic figures and dragons.

In the main hall, the statue of the Jade Emperor sits enthroned, surrounded by a multitude of Buddhist and Taoist deities. The Hall of Hells is particularly impressive, where meticulously crafted woodcarvings depict the punishments of the afterlife. The small pond in the pagoda’s courtyard is full of turtles, which are symbols of long life in Chinese mythology. Locals often come here to pray and make offerings.

Thien Hau Temple

A gem of Chinese architecture built in honor of the sea goddess Thien Hau in the Cholon Chinese quarter.

The temple was founded in the early 19th century by Cantonese immigrants who gave thanks to the goddess for their safe crossing of the sea. The facade of the building is relatively modest, but the interior is decorated with breathtaking details. The roof structure is adorned with meticulously crafted porcelain figures that tell stories from Chinese mythology. The special feature of the temple is the spiral-shaped incense coils that hang from the ceiling.

On the altar stands the statue of the goddess Thien Hau, with continuously burning incense in front of it. The temple contains numerous woodcarvings, calligraphy, and bronze statues that are masterpieces of Chinese-Vietnamese art. On holidays, especially during the lunar new year, the temple is the scene of colorful and noisy celebrations where lucky visitors can see lion dances and other traditional performances.

Vĩnh Nghiêm Pagoda

Ho Chi Minh City’s largest Buddhist temple is one of the most beautiful examples of traditional Vietnamese architecture.

The pagoda was built between 1964 and 1971, combining local and Japanese architectural styles. The impressive main hall’s roof structure follows the style of traditional Vietnamese pagodas, while the seven-story pagoda tower shows Japanese architectural influences.

A huge Buddha statue welcomes believers and visitors in the main hall. The special feature of the building complex is the wealth of wood carvings that depict Buddhist stories and symbols.

Buu Long Pagoda

One of Ho Chi Minh City’s most picturesque and peaceful Buddhist sanctuaries.

The temple was founded in 1942 but gained its current impressive form during a complete renovation in 2007. The architectural style uniquely combines the characteristics of traditional Vietnamese and Thai Buddhist temples.

The pagoda is located on a hilltop, surrounded by carefully tended gardens and a scenic lake where lotus flowers bloom in the warm months. Climbing the main staircase, visitors are greeted by a monumental, gilded Buddha statue. The special feature of the pagoda complex is the seven-level tower that symbolizes the levels of Buddhist cosmology.

In the main hall, there is a huge white jade Buddha statue, in front of which fresh flowers and incense are constantly fragrant. The walls and ceiling are decorated with meticulously crafted frescoes and carvings depicting Buddha’s life and Buddhist teachings.

Nguyen Hue Walking Street

An elegant boulevard in the heart of the city, which is one of the most popular places in modern Ho Chi Minh City.

The former Charner Boulevard was established during the French colonial period and was converted into a pedestrian zone in 2015. The 670-meter-long and 64-meter-wide boulevard stretches from the Saigon River to City Hall. The promenade is decorated with fountains, carefully maintained green areas, and flower beds.

The street is particularly lively in the evening hours when it is crowded with locals and tourists. Exclusive shops, restaurants, and cafes line the promenade. A special feature of the street is the flower promenade, which is particularly impressive during the New Year (Tet) celebration when it is decorated with thousands of flowers.

Tao Dan Park

One of the city’s largest and most beautiful public parks.

The 10-hectare park was created during the French colonial period and has since been a favorite resting place for city dwellers. The park is home to more than 1,000 different species of trees, including rare and native local plants. A special attraction of the park is the bonsai garden showing miniature Vietnamese landscapes.

Every morning, bird enthusiasts gather in the southeast corner of the park, bringing their caged birds to the „Bird Club”. Cultural events and celebrations are often held in the central area of the park.

War Remnants Museum

A museum presenting the horrors and consequences of the Vietnam War, which is a shocking but important place to visit.

The museum was opened in 1975, originally named the „Documentation Center for American War Crimes” but was later renamed. The building is divided into eight thematic galleries that show different aspects of the war. In the courtyard of the museum, American military vehicles, tanks, and aircraft captured during the war are on display.

In the exhibition halls, shocking photographs, personal items, and documents recall the horrors of the war. Particularly distressing is the section showcasing the effects of chemical weapons, such as Agent Orange, which illustrates the long-term consequences of the war. The „Memories of War” gallery presents the work of war photojournalists – including many fallen journalists.

Ho Chi Minh City Museum

A comprehensive museum presenting the history and culture of the city and all of South Vietnam, housed in the Gia Long Palace.

The neo-baroque style palace, built between 1885 and 1890, originally served as the residence of the French governor and later became the headquarters of the South Vietnamese government. The impressive building itself is historically significant, as it was the site of numerous important events in 20th-century political life. The museum opened to the public in 1978.

The museum’s exhibitions chronologically present the development of the city from ancient times to the present day, with particular emphasis on the revolutionary period. Visitors can see archaeological finds, documents from the colonial period, and memories of revolutionary struggles. Particularly valuable are the exhibitions showcasing the city’s traditional crafts and historical photographs depicting early Saigon. Various sculptures and monuments can be found in the museum’s garden.

Ho Chi Minh City weather: when is the best time to travel here?

Ho Chi Minh City has a tropical monsoon climate characterized by high temperature and humidity throughout the year, with two distinct seasons.

Dry Season (November-April):

The dry season is the most popular tourist period. The temperature ranges between 22-35°C, with lower humidity and minimal precipitation. December and January are particularly pleasant when the temperature is somewhat lower and the air less humid. In February and March, the temperature gradually increases but remains enjoyable. In April, the approaching rainy season can be felt, with temperatures rising above 30°C and increasing humidity.

Rainy Season (May-October):

The rainy season is characterized by high humidity and regular, short but intense showers that generally occur in the afternoon hours. The temperature varies between 25-35°C, but due to the high humidity, it may feel even hotter. Most of the precipitation falls in June and July. The monsoon reaches its peak in September when floods may occur.

Best time to travel:

The most ideal period for visiting Ho Chi Minh City is the dry season (November-April), especially in December and January, when the weather is pleasant, precipitation is minimal, and tourist attractions can be explored under optimal conditions.

Fortunately, many historical and cultural attractions have been preserved.

Hanoi is located in the northern part of the country, close to Halong Bay. From 1954 to 1976, it was the capital of North Vietnam, and from the 11th century until 1802, with minor interruptions, it was the capital of Vietnam.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

One of Hanoi’s most famous and visited sites, it is a significant historical monument for the Vietnamese. The mausoleum houses Ho Chi Minh’s embalmed body in a glass coffin.

Ho Chi Minh was not only an iconic figure of the Vietnamese independence movement but also the unifier of the country and the founder of the socialist state. Construction began two years after his death in 1971 and was completed in 1975. It was built following the model of Lenin’s Mausoleum in Moscow but also reflects Vietnamese traditions.

Entry is free, but visitors must wear respectful attire (covered shoulders and knees) and remain silent inside the building. Photography and videography are strictly prohibited inside the mausoleum.

Ho Chi Minh Museum

The museum showcases Ho Chi Minh’s life, work, and the history of the Vietnamese independence struggle.

It contains numerous personal items associated with Ho Chi Minh, including his clothes, manuscripts, books, and everyday objects. Some parts of the museum also contain symbolic exhibitions that focus not only on historical events but also on the symbolic significance of Ho Chi Minh’s ideas and personality.

Presidential Palace

The government building used for official purposes has symbolic significance in Vietnamese history and Ho Chi Minh’s life.

Built between 1900 and 1906 for the French colonial government, it originally served as the official residence of the Governor of French Indochina. Its color is a vibrant yellow, which is a characteristic feature of French colonial architecture in Vietnam.

Today, it still serves mainly official government purposes. International delegations are received here, and important diplomatic events are held. The interior of the palace is not open to tourists, but the garden and surrounding buildings are.

After independence in 1945, Ho Chi Minh became the country’s first president. Although he was officially supposed to live here, he decided to live in a much more modest wooden house next to a small pond in the garden. This house can be visited, where we can see the objects and furniture used at that time.

Hoan Kiem Lake

Located in the center of Hanoi, it is one of the most popular tourist and cultural attractions, as well as an important community space for the city’s residents.

Its name means „Lake of the Returned Sword”, named after a legend. According to this, in the 15th century, when King Le Loi successfully liberated Vietnam from the rule of the Chinese Ming dynasty, a golden turtle appeared in the lake and reclaimed the magical sword that the king had used for victory. Le Loi returned the sword, and the golden turtle disappeared into the depths of the lake.

The area around the lake is beautifully landscaped with lush vegetation and trees, making for pleasant walking paths.

Thap Rua (Turtle Tower)

This structure was erected on a small island in Hoan Kiem Lake to commemorate the above legend. Its name means Turtle Tower.

It was built at the end of the 19th century during the French colonial period. It was initiated by local authorities and a wealthy official named Nguyen Ngoc Kim. The structure is three stories high and made of characteristic stone.

It is located on the largest island in the lake, but the island is so small that the tower almost completely occupies it. The island cannot be accessed directly, so visitors can only admire it from the lake shore. It is illuminated at night, making the view even more beautiful.

One of Hanoi’s most important religious attractions is located on a small island in the northern part of Hoan Kiem Lake. It is named after its island, which means Jade Mountain.

The temple was originally a sacred place of Buddhist and Taoist faith, dedicated to Van Xuong, the patron saint of Vietnamese sciences, and the famous general Tran Hung Dao, who successfully led Vietnamese forces against the Mongols in the 13th century.

The temple buildings were constructed in traditional Vietnamese style, richly decorated with red and gold motifs. There are several pavilions and shrines where visitors can light candles and place incense.

The temple is connected to the lake shore by a famous red-painted wooden bridge, the Thue Huc Bridge. The bridge’s arched shape and vivid color make it a popular photography spot.

Old Quarter

This part of the city has a history spanning several centuries and is one of the best places to experience Vietnamese culture, history, and everyday life.

The Old Quarter was established as early as the 13th century and was originally the center of the city’s craft guilds. Each street was home to a particular craft, which is why the street names are often associated with trades, such as „Silver Street” (Hang Bac) or „Paper Street” (Hang Ma).

It consists of 36 streets that are narrow, chaotic, and extremely busy. Most of the buildings are traditional, narrow, long houses called „tube houses.” These architectural solutions were developed due to high land prices, and the buildings often serve as homes for multi-generational families. Shops or workshops are often found on the ground floor, while apartments are on the upper floors.

Train Street (Đường Tàu)

One of Hanoi’s most famous and unique attractions is a small street in the Old Quarter where a train runs through.

The railway line runs directly between residential buildings, and the streets are so narrow that when trains pass, people have to press themselves against the walls of buildings. At such times, street vendors quickly pack up their things to allow the train to pass. After the train passes, life returns to normal.

It’s one of the biggest experiences for tourists. There are many pictures and videos on the internet showing the train passing just centimeters away from people who have moved aside or are sitting in cafes.

Bach Ma Temple

Located in the Old Quarter, this building is one of Hanoi’s oldest and most significant temples.

Its name means „White Horse”, which comes from a legend. According to this, the temple was dedicated to the city’s guardian spirit, a white horse that helped King Lý Thái Tổ lay the foundations of the Thang Long Citadel (later Hanoi).

Its architectural style follows traditional Vietnamese forms, richly decorated with carvings and colorful dragon and horse motifs. In the central part of the temple, there is an altar dedicated to the spirit of the white horse.

Thăng Long Imperial Citadel

This over 1000-year-old citadel is one of the most important monuments of Vietnamese history, which was the center of numerous dynasties. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 2010.

It was built in the 7th century but gained its true significance during the Lý dynasty in 1010. At that time, King Lý Thái Tổ named the city Thăng Long and established the capital here. During the French colonial period, part of the fortress was demolished, but the remaining parts are still important historical monuments today.

Its most significant part is the flag tower. The 33-meter high tower is topped with a Vietnamese flag, which is a symbol of national pride. The tower was built in 1812 and survived the destruction of both the French and American wars.

The Kinh Thien Palace was the center of the citadel, where important ceremonies were held. Although the palace no longer stands, the remaining foundations of the site can still be seen today. The impressive Doan Mon Gate was one of the main gates used by the royal family and high-ranking officials. The Cua Bac Gate is the northern gate of the citadel, which is one of the best-preserved gates from the citadel’s original structure.

Temple of Literature

This complex of buildings is one of the symbols of Vietnamese science, education, and Confucian philosophy.

It was founded in 1070 by King Lý Thánh Tông, originally dedicated to Confucius and his disciples to honor the Chinese philosopher and teacher. Six years later, Vietnam’s first university was founded here.

Its architectural style also shows Chinese influences. The temple consists of five separate courtyards. The first courtyard symbolizes peace and harmony. In the third courtyard is the famous Khuê Văn Các, a red-painted pavilion that is a symbol of scientific excellence. In the fifth courtyard is the main temple, where Confucius and his four most important disciples are worshipped. On the altars stands a statue of Confucius.

Located in the western part of the city, it is surrounded by numerous important historical, cultural, and religious sites.

With an area of about 500 hectares, it is Hanoi’s largest lake. Promenades and resting places have been built around the lake, making it an excellent location for walks. From the shore, there is a beautiful view of the city.

Tran Quoc Pagoda

Hanoi’s oldest Buddhist pagoda, located on a small peninsula on the southern shore of West Lake.

The original pagoda was built in the 6th century, but due to a flood, it was moved to its current location in the 17th century. With the support of Vietnamese rulers, it remained one of the centers of Buddhist teachings for a long time. Over the centuries, the pagoda was rebuilt and expanded several times, making it an impressive architectural monument today.

The main building of the pagoda is an 11-story tower made of red brick, standing 15 meters tall. The structure of the building is reminiscent of Buddhist sacred mountains, and each floor contains a Buddha statue. At the top of the tower is a lotus flower symbol. There are several shrines and altars on the grounds dedicated to Buddha and other religious figures.

One Pillar Pagoda

This small Buddhist shrine is famous for its unique architecture, as it is built on a single pillar that resembles a blooming lotus.

According to legend, it was built by Emperor Lý Thái Tông in 1049. The story goes that the emperor had no children, and in a dream, he saw the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara sitting on a lotus, who gave him a son. Soon after, the emperor’s son was born, and in gratitude, the emperor had this pagoda built in the shape of a lotus flower.

The pagoda is a small wooden structure supported by a single stone pillar and is located in the middle of an artificial pond where lotus flowers grow. It has an ornate roof decorated with traditional Vietnamese carvings and Buddha statues. Inside is a statue of the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara.

Hoa Lo Prison Museum

It showcases the dark chapters of the city’s French colonial past and the period of the Vietnam War.

During the colonial period, the prison held political prisoners under terrible conditions. In the 1960s, the North Vietnamese government held American military pilots here. They nicknamed the place „Hanoi Hilton.” One of the most famous prisoners was John McCain, later a United States Senator and presidential candidate.

The museum was opened in 1993. Most of the prison was demolished, but the remaining parts were restored to show its original condition. We can see prison cells, torture instruments, and exhibitions about different periods.

Opera House

The building, which is an impressive legacy of the French colonial era, must be highlighted.

It was built by the French in the early 20th century to provide a place for cultural events and performances for the French community. The Paris Garnier Opera House served as a model.

The building is in neoclassical and baroque style, with its most beautiful part being the staircase. Its interior halls are decorated with ornate gilded carvings, elegant chandeliers, and painted ceilings.

St. Joseph’s Cathedral

Hanoi’s largest Catholic church was built during the French colonial period.

It is a typical example of Gothic architectural style, built mainly on the model of Notre Dame in Paris. The church has colorful stained glass windows, and its two towers are 31 meters high. Its organ is one of the largest in the country.

Vietnam is attracting more and more tourists, thanks in part to its natural beauties. Let’s look at 17 amazing places!

The country, located along the Gulf of Tonkin and boasting a long coastline, has undergone significant development recently, which has also boosted tourism. It is bordered by China to the north, Laos and Cambodia to the west and the Gulf of Vietnam to the east.

Best places in Vietnam

Ha Long Bay

Vietnam’s most famous site is located to the east of Hanoi, about 170 kilometers away. It has been part of UNESCO World Heritage since 1994.

The bay features more than 1900 limestone karsts and islets rising spectacularly from the water, creating a stunning landscape. Most are uninhabited islands or rocks, many of which are several hundred meters tall.

Its name means „Bay of the Descending Dragon”. Legend has it that the bay was formed when a dragon living in the nearby mountains ran to the coast, its tail carving deep furrows in the ground, which were then flooded by the sea after its descent.

Several fishing villages can be found around the bay, where people have lived on the water for generations, dwelling on boats.

Vietnam’s best-known countryside

Da Nang

This central port city is famous for its long, sandy beaches and nearby tourist attractions.

Its modern cityscape is dominated by the Dragon Bridge, which arches over the Han River. It is especially spectacular at night when the bridge is illuminated and „breathes fire” on Saturdays.

Its coastline is continuously sandy, with My Khe Beach being the most famous. It is a well-developed area with many hotels and restaurants.

About 8 km from the city is a unique mountain range. The Marble Mountains (Ngu Hanh Son) consist of five limestone and marble hills. They are famous for their stunning caves, Buddhist sanctuaries, and Hindu temples, as well as the spectacular views from their peaks.

Da Nang attractions, weather

The iconic Dragon Bridge in Da Nang

Golden Bridge

This unique observation deck is located near Da Nang. The bridge is supported by two giant, stone hands, appearing as if they are holding it.

Opened in 2018, it quickly became world-famous for its unique design and the surrounding natural beauty. Approximately 150 meters long and situated 1,400 meters above sea level, it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the landscape below.

The bridge is part of the Ba Na Hills resort, which includes a French-style village, an amusement park, hotels, restaurants, and one of the world’s longest cable car rides.

Two hands hold the observation deck

Ban Gioc Waterfall

Located on the Vietnam-China border, this waterfall is one of the largest and most spectacular natural waterfalls on the Quay Son River in Asia.

Spanning over 200 meters wide and cascading down several levels over 70 meters, the immense power of the water and the contrast with the lush green landscape offer a stunning view. The waterfall is especially powerful during the rainy season when the water flow is at its peak.

It can also be approached by boat, allowing for an up-close admiration.

One of Asia’s most beautiful waterfalls

Ho Chi Minh City

Formerly known as Saigon, it is Vietnam’s largest city, located in the southern part of the country.

The city has a rich historical and cultural heritage, visible in the buildings from the colonial period. Such is the Monument of Heroes, the Notre Dame Cathedral (a full-size replica of Paris’s Notre Dame), and the Central Post Office.

The markets should not be missed, where you can find everything from food to clothes and handicrafts. The most famous among them is the Ben Thanh Market.

The modern face of the city is represented by the Bitexco Financial Tower and other skyscrapers, showcasing Vietnam’s development.

Ho Chi Minh City attractions, weather

Nha Trang

Located in the southeastern part of the country, the city is famous for its crystal-clear waters, long golden sandy beaches, and beautiful coastline. Its beach, Bãi biển Nha Trang, stretches for several kilometers.

On the opposite island is Vinpearl Land, a large amusement park with many games, a water park, and an oceanarium. Interestingly, it can also be reached by cable car from the city.

In addition to these, its historical sites should not be missed! The most beautiful is the Po Nagar Cham Temples, one of the most important remains of the Cham civilization. Built between the 7th and 12th centuries, they were dedicated to the Hindu goddess Po Nagar. Of the four remaining towers, the tallest and most imposing is the Great Tower, adorned with impressive carvings and sculptures.

An increasingly popular part of Vietnam

Hanoi

Vietnam’s capital, located on the banks of the Red River, stands out culturally as well.

A prominent attraction is the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex, which commemorates Vietnam’s national hero, President Ho Chi Minh. The complex includes the president’s home, a museum, and a grand mausoleum where the leader’s mummified body is kept.

Additionally, it houses the National History Museum, the Revolutionary Museum, the National Fine Arts Museum, the Temple of Literature, the One Pillar Pagoda, Hanoi’s Flag Tower, and numerous historical sights.

The iconic location in the city center is Hoan Kiem Lake, a popular meeting place. The Ngoc Son Temple is located on a small island in the lake, accessible by a red-painted bridge.

Hanoi attractions

Phan Thiet

This coastal city, located between Ho Chi Minh City and Nha Trang, became popular mainly for its part named Mui Ne. It was a small fishing village but has now grown into one of Vietnam’s most favored seaside resorts.

Besides the seaside, the Red Sand Dunes are a must-see, where sand surfing is possible, and of course, walking in the fine sand. It’s worth catching the sunrise here.

Another significant attraction is the Fairy Stream, which meanders beside red and white sandstone formations, creating a small gorge. It’s possible to walk in the water barefoot.

Popular holiday destination

Hue

Located in the central part of the country along the Perfume River. It was the capital of Vietnam from 1802 to 1945 during the Nguyen dynasty.

It’s home to the famous Royal Citadel, which was the residence of the Nguyen dynasty rulers and is part of UNESCO World Heritage. The massive, fortified complex includes the Royal Palace and numerous temples, pavilions, and museums.

Within the citadel walls is the Forbidden City, which was the private residence of the imperial family. Though much of it was destroyed during the Vietnam War, restoration work is ongoing.

Another significant attraction of the city is the Thien Mu Pagoda, Vietnam’s tallest pagoda, and an important religious site.

Hue attractions, weather
