National Museum of Anthropology (Museo Nacional de Antropología)

Templo Mayor Museum

Located next to the ruins of Templo Mayor in Mexico City’s main square, it presents artifacts from the Aztec civilization’s rich cultural, religious, and social life.

Templo Mayor was one of the most important temples of the Aztec empire. It was dedicated to the gods of war and rain, Huitzilopochtli and Tlaloc, and played a central role in Aztec religious life. It was discovered in 1978.

One of the most outstanding finds is the Coyolxauhqui Stone, a relief of an Aztec goddess, Coyolxauhqui, sister of Huitzilopochtli. According to Aztec mythology, Huitzilopochtli threw Coyolxauhqui from the top of the temple, and this depiction shows the myth in exceptional detail.

The museum is a symbolic site of Mexican art and culture.

Frida Kahlo Museum

Anahuacalli Museum

One of Mexico City’s most unique cultural institutions, which owes its existence to the vision of Diego Rivera, the famous Mexican painter.

The museum is located in the Xochimilco district and takes its name from the Aztec word „Anahuac” which means „land between the waters”. The building itself is a work of art that harmoniously combines pre-Hispanic Mexican architectural elements with modern design solutions.

Rivera began construction in 1942 to create a home for his pre-Hispanic art collection. During the museum’s design, he worked with volcanic stone and basalt, following the architectural traditions of Aztec and Mayan temples. The building’s pyramid-shaped, massive structure provides an imposing sight. After Rivera’s death, the institution came under the care of the Diego Rivera Anahuacalli Museum Foundation, which opened its doors to the general public in 1964.

The museum houses more than 60,000 pre-Hispanic artifacts, including works by Aztec, Maya, Olmec, and Zapotec civilizations. Franz Mayer Museum

Zócalo (Plaza de la Constitución)

One of Mexico’s most important and largest squares which is the part of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

It was an important meeting place during the Aztec era, and the main square of ancient Tenochtitlan stood at this location. Following the Spanish conquest, the square was transformed and is now the center of Mexico’s political, cultural, and religious life.

Famous buildings on the square include the Metropolitan Cathedral, the National Palace, and the Templo Mayor.

Metropolitan Cathedral

Latin America’s largest and oldest cathedral stands on the Zócalo square.

Its construction took nearly three centuries, from 1573 to 1813, resulting in a blend of different architectural styles — baroque, renaissance, and neoclassical. The cathedral was built on the ruins of Aztec Tenochtitlan, symbolizing Christianity’s victory over the ancient religion. The site was chosen by Hernán Cortés to be the most important church in the new colonial capital.

Four huge bell towers adorn the building, containing a total of 25 bells. One of the cathedral’s most impressive features is the „Altar de los Reyes” altar, which serves as the main altar. Made of pure gold, it offers an impressive sight with its rich detail.

National Palace

One of the country’s most important government buildings, located on the Zócalo square.

Originally serving as the residence of Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés, it later became the colonial government’s headquarters. After Mexican independence, the building was taken over by the Mexican government.

The building’s red tezontle (volcanic stone) covering and ornate facade give the palace a special character. Its balcony is where the Mexican president commemorates the independence struggle every September 15th, on the eve of Independence Day.

The palace’s inner courtyard features a series of famous murals painted by Diego Rivera between 1929 and 1951. These frescoes depict Mexico’s history, from ancient Aztec civilizations through Spanish conquest and colonial period to the independence struggles.

Templo Mayor

Also located on the Zócalo square, it was the main temple of the ancient Aztec city of Tenochtitlan.

The structure represented the Aztec empire’s religious and political center. It was dedicated to two gods: Huitzilopochtli (god of sun and war) and Tlaloc (god of rain and fertility). At the top of the temple were separate shrines where priests performed sacrifices, including animal sacrifices and even human sacrifices.

The ruins were accidentally discovered in 1978. Excavations revealed the temple’s foundations and numerous artifacts. The museum next to the ruins displays thousands of finds, including ceremonial objects, stone sculptures, carvings, and the famous Coyolxauhqui stone artifact depicting a female figure worshipped as a moon deity.

El Ángel de la Independencia

„The Angel of Independence” is one of Mexico City’s most famous monuments commemorating the heroes of the Mexican War of Independence.

The monument was inaugurated in 1910, marking the 100th anniversary of Miguel Hidalgo and the Mexican independence movement. The monument’s base contains the remains of several Mexican independence leaders, including Miguel Hidalgo, José María Morelos, and other heroes.

Monumento a la Revolución

Chapultepec Castle

Between 1864 and 1867, the castle was home to Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico and his wife Charlotte. Over the years, it served various functions: military academy, royal palace, government center, and finally a museum.

Today, the castle houses the National Museum of History (Museo Nacional de Historia), showcasing Mexico’s history from pre-Columbian times through independence struggles to the revolution.

Altar a la Patria

„The Altar to the Homeland” is located in Chapultepec Park, where one of the final battles of the Mexican-American War took place.

Basilica of Guadalupe

One of the world’s most famous churches and most visited Marian shrines.

It was built on Tepeyac Hill, where according to Catholic believers, the Virgin Mary, known as Our Lady of Guadalupe, appeared to Juan Diego in 1531. The current building opened in 1976, but next to it stands a centuries-old church that was previously the Guadalupe basilica.

The old basilica, built from gray stone and reddish tezontle, has three naves covered by fifteen vaults, with the highest in the middle where the dome rests on pendentives. The new building houses Mexico’s most valuable religious relic, Juan Diego’s tilma with the image of Mary.

Coyoacán

A historic district in southern Mexico City famous for its artistic, cultural, and bohemian atmosphere.

One of the oldest districts founded by Spanish conquistadors, it has preserved its colonial character. It’s full of cafes, art galleries, and antique shops.

Its main square, Plaza Hidalgo and Jardín Centenario, regularly hosts festivals, musical performances, and craft fairs. In the center is the famous coyote fountain, which refers to the meaning of Coyoacán: „place of coyotes”.

Interestingly, the streets are perpendicular in the American style, and the northeast-southwest streets are numbered.

Playa del Carmen has many kilometers of coastline. The sea is a beautiful azure blue, and the sandy beach is fine.

The most popular part is Calle Quinta Avenida, a very long pedestrian street. Here you can find everything: shops, cafes, restaurants, bars. It is worth spending time here in the evening; it is very atmospheric.

In the southern part of the city, there is a gated area called Playacar. Within this area, there are hotels of many famous hotel chains.

Tulum

Located in the southern part of the Maya Riviera, it is also an ancient Maya ruin city. Unlike other Maya cities, Tulum was built directly on the coast. In the 16th century, during the Spanish conquest, it was an important commercial and religious center.

The buildings of the ruin city are located in Tulum National Park, which stands on the coast. Its beauty is also enhanced by the stunning sandy beach that begins beneath the ruins.

The highest building in the ruin city is El Castillo, the Castle. There are three other temple buildings: the Temple of the Descending God (Templo del Dios Descendente), the Temple of the Frescoes (Templo de las Pinturas), and the Temple of the Wind God (Templo del Dios del Viento).

I have already mentioned the white sandy beach. The beach is in a fantastic setting due to the ruins. The beach begins with Playa Ruinas beneath the ruins, followed by the most beautiful Tulum Beach and Playa Paraiso.

There is also a part where many hotels are located. In the Zona Hotelera in Tulum, numerous excellent hotels stretch for several kilometers.

Chichén Itzá

Although not located on the coast, it is 200 km from Cancún and is one of the main tourist attractions.

The Maya city, built around 500 AD, was occupied by the Toltecs fleeing eastward from Tula in the 10th century. The military leaders of the two peoples, who formed an alliance, made it the capital of the Maya-Toltec empire.

Chichén Itzá is a meeting point of Maya and Toltec cultures and arts. Its unique architectural ruins have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988 and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World since 2007.

Its most famous and impressive building is El Castillo, the „Castle”. This pyramid temple was built around 987 by the Toltec king. The massive square stone temple, oriented precisely north-south-east-west, is divided into nine terraces and stands 55 meters tall. Each side has 91 steps – a total of 365 – leading up to the sanctuary at the top.

The pyramid temple’s special feature is revealed during the spring and autumn equinoxes: the shadows cast by the rising and setting sun create the image of a serpent crawling out of the temple. The head and tail were carved in stone at the base and top of the pyramid.

Other interesting buildings in the ruin city include the Temple of the Warriors, the Temple of the High Priests, El Caracol (the „snail”), the ball game court, and the Sacrifice Well.

Cobá

Also located away from the coast, it is 50 km from Tulum.

In the Classic Period, between 200 and 800 AD, it was one of the largest cities in the entire Maya world until its great rival, Chichén Itzá, took over the leadership role in the region.

Only a small portion of Cobá’s more than 6,500 structures has been fully excavated. The three most important building groups are Cobá, Nohoch Mul, and the Group of Paintings.

This area is home to one of the tallest structures in the entire Maya world, the 42-meter-high Nohoch Mul pyramid. It is worth climbing to the top for a fantastic view of the forested landscape.

Xel-Há Park

This huge adventure park is located near Tulum.

The entrance fee is not cheap, but it includes almost everything: multi-course all-inclusive meals, bike use, unlimited use of all attractions, towels, luggage storage, and bio sunscreen.

Activities include a 30-meter-high winding slide, swimming with dolphins, snorkeling, cliff jumping, zip-lining, and swimming in a mangrove forest.

Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve

This huge park is located south of Tulum and is definitely worth a day visit.

Among four types of mangrove forests, there is a true water labyrinth with an extraordinary bird population. You can see six-meter crocodiles, nests of pink pelicans, 600-kilogram manatees, massive turtles, and dolphin families in the open sea.

There are more than 20 archaeological sites in the area, including Muyil, the ruins of an ancient Maya trade center.

Cozumel

This island is located „opposite” the Maya Riviera, and many cruise ships dock here. The sandy beaches and Maya cultural relics attract most tourists to the island.

It is reachable from Playa del Carmen by a 45-minute boat ride, with several daily departures from morning to evening.

Its most famous attraction is San Gervasio, a Maya archaeological site. Today, six main building groups are connected by sacbés (Maya roads).

The Chankanaab lagoon in the southern part of the island, connected to the sea through an underground tunnel, is interesting for its wildlife: marine animals in the lagoon and the region’s vegetation in the adjacent botanical garden can be studied.

Isla Mujeres

This island stretches 8 km in length but is less than 1 km wide, located just a few kilometers from the city of Cancún.

Many people visit the island for its warm climate and sandy, palm-lined beaches. Playa Norte, located at the northern end, was selected as one of the world’s top 25 beaches by TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice in 2013.

In the south, Garrafón Park offers excellent views of the island and the sea from its heights, and there are opportunities for kayaking, diving, as well as hiking and biking.

Animal-loving tourists often visit the Tortugranja facility, a center for sea turtles that serves both tourist and scientific observation purposes. There is also a dolphinarium on the island where visitors can swim with dolphins.

Many are also drawn to the ruins of the Muncada hacienda. According to legend, a pirate named Mundaca built a house for his love, but the woman did not reciprocate his feelings. The house has been in ruins ever since.

Holbox

60 km north-west of Cancún is this island, which is not yet a „tourist destination”. Around the island, you can easily spot sharks.

There is only one small town on the western part of the island. There are no paved roads anywhere, only sandy paths and tracks.

The town is also accessible by bike or golf cart.

Many say that it is more authentic than the island of Mujeres because of the few tourists.

Cenote

This is a naturally formed well-like karst formation, of which there are many on the Yucatán Peninsula.

Cenotes usually have a roughly circular opening, and the water collected at the bottom is often very clear underground water. They are suitable for swimming.

The most famous cenote is Cenote X’toloc in Chichen Itzá. However, there are also several cenote parks near the coast.

Weather

The Yucatán Peninsula has two seasons, a dry season and a rainy season. The dry season spans from November to May, and the rainy season lasts from May to November.

Therefore, the Maya Riviera is a perfect holiday destination during the winter months.

In winter, daytime temperatures range from 26-28 degrees Celsius, and the sea temperature is 25-26 degrees Celsius.

The hurricane season lasts from August to early November, so it is advisable not to travel during this period!

Oaxaca de Juárez

The city and its surroundings have a lot of historical heritage, being one of the significant destinations in Mexico’s southwest.

Nearby Monte Albán, as one of the oldest cities in Mesoamerica, served as the social and political center of the Zapotec elite for a long time. It was built on an artificially flattened hill about 1940 meters above sea level, offering a wonderful view from the ruins.

An interesting event is the Night of the Radishes. Every year on December 23, artworks made of radishes, flowers, and corn husks are displayed.

The city is also famous for its gastronomy. Highlights include local cheeses, mole (a special Mexican sauce), and tlayudas (large, crispy tortillas). The most extreme, however, is chapulines, which are fried grasshoppers. Don’t miss out! 🙂

Mezcal is produced in the area. This distilled spirit is made from the fermentation and distillation of the common agave native to Mexico. It is usually drunk neat, with a strong, smoky flavor.

Chichen Itza

The most famous architectural ruin complex of the Mayan civilization has been part of UNESCO’s cultural World Heritage since 1988 and one of the new seven wonders of the world since 2007.

The Toltecs introduced the worship of Kukulkan – the feathered serpent god, their war customs, and the ritual of human sacrifice, marks of which the city still bears today.

Guadalajara

Mexico’s 2nd largest city, also known as the Pearl of the West, is the birthplace of mariachi music and is famous for tequila, as well as charreada (Mexican rodeo) traditions.

One of the country’s oldest cities, it is rich in old buildings. Its most important monument is the cathedral located on the main road, Avenida Alcalde. The Rotonda de los Hombres Ilustres is the mausoleum of the city’s renowned men, politicians, writers, artists.

Sumidero Canyon

A natural wonder in the southern state of Chiapas, Mexico, is a long, steep-walled river valley that is several hundred meters deep in places, reaching up to 1200 meters.

The Grijalva River has carved out the canyon over a span of 20 km. Numerous caves can be found on the valley’s steep walls, including the Cave of Colors and the Cave of Silence, as well as a famous waterfall named the Christmas Tree due to its shape.

Tulum

Mérida

The cultural and economic center of the Yucatán Peninsula, where a unique mix of Mayan culture and Spanish traditions can be observed.

Home to one of Mexico’s oldest cathedrals, built in the 16th century and an excellent example of Spanish colonial architecture. Paseo de Montejo Avenue is reminiscent of the Champs-Elysées, lined with numerous imposing buildings, elegant hotels, and shops.

Bacalar Lake

A very long but narrow lake on the southern part of the Yucatán Peninsula.

Holbox

Palenque

The city and the surrounding national park have been part of UNESCO’s cultural world heritage since 1987.

The Mayan ruin city became a religious center in the 7th century and flourished during the reign of King Kin Pakal. Its significance is underscored by the discovery among the ruins of the ceremonial center of some of the most important works of Mayan art and the longest text record of Mayan writing to date.

The most beautiful part is the Palace built on a terrace 10 meters high, 100 meters long, and 75 meters wide. The most striking part of this labyrinthine complex is the square-based four-story, 15-meter-high tower.

San Miguel de Allende

Together with the nearby Sanctuary of Jesus Nazareno de Atotonilco, its richly monumented old town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. It is also listed among the Pueblo Mágico, which includes towns of outstanding tourist value.

The town has numerous old monuments, mainly from the 18th century. The Church of Saint Michael the Archangel became famous because Miguel Hidalgo, the hero of independence, was active there as a priest.

Tepoztlán

Teotihuacan

The city’s center is the more than one kilometer long main road, the Avenue of the Dead. The Aztecs believed that the smaller, flat platforms lining the road concealed tombs, but archaeologists believe these structures served purely ceremonial purposes.

Its iconic buildings include the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon, and the Citadel at the end of the main street. Anyone visiting the capital should definitely make a trip here!

Las Coloradas

This small fishing village on the northern part of the Yucatán Peninsula became known for its unique pink salt lakes.

These lakes are actually salt evaporation ponds, and their pink color is attributed to the microorganisms living in the salt-rich waters, especially a type of algae.

Isla Partida and Isla Espíritu Santo
