Berlin’s transportation system is excellent, similar to other Western European cities. The metro network is particularly outstanding, often making it sufficient to rely solely on rail transportation.

Transportation between airports and the city center

There are two airports in Berlin, with the newest one (Brandenburg) opening in 2020. The latter is the largest and Berlin’s main airport.

Tegel Airport was closed at the end of 2020, while Schönefeld now operates as one of the terminals of Brandenburg Airport.

Berlin-Brandenburg Airport

Located 18 km south of Berlin’s center, next to Berlin-Schönefeld Airport.

It has two terminals (T1, T2) and is easily accessible from Berlin’s center in multiple ways.

Berlin public transport tickets are only valid with a „C” zone supplementary ticket.

S-Bahn

S9 and S45 trains (similar to suburban rail) take you to the T1-T2 station.

Transfer options to the metro are available at various stops for both lines.

X7 ExpressBus

Operates 24/7 between Rudow U7 metro station and the T1-T2 stop. Also stops at T5 (Schönefeld).

The fastest way to get in by bus (about 18 minutes travel time from the metro station), as it has no intermediate stops outside the terminals.

Schönefeld Airport (Terminal T5 of Brandenburg Airport)

Schönefeld Airport became Terminal T5 of Brandenburg Airport.

You can travel between T1-T2 and T5 terminals using the S9 and S45 trains.

Berlin public transport tickets are only valid with a „C” zone supplementary ticket.

Airport-Express Schönefeld

RE7, RB14, or RB19 trains can take you to the city center between 4:30 and 23:00.

Transfer options to the metro are available at various stops for all lines.

S-Bahn

S45 and S9 trains also provide access to the city.

Transfer options to the metro are available at various stops for both lines.

Buses

Several bus lines operate to the airport, providing transfers to metro or train in the suburbs.

The best choice is the X7 bus, operating 24/7 to Rudow U7 metro station (with its other terminus at the T1-T2 stop).

Additionally, buses 163, 164, and 171 operate with longer travel times.

You can find all information about transportation between T1, T2, and T5 (Schönefeld) terminals and Berlin here!

Berlin city public transport

Berlin has an excellent public transportation system, with easy access everywhere by metro (U-Bahn), bus, and suburban rail (S-Bahn).

We must highlight bus 100, which covers the main attractions in the city center. It’s worth using this service.

Berlin is divided into three zones (A, B, C), with almost all attractions located in zones A and B. For Brandenburg and Schönefeld airports, an ABC ticket or an AB ticket with a „C” supplement is required.

Tickets

AB tickets (Einzelfahrschein) and ABC tickets are valid for 2 hours with unlimited transfers but cannot be used for return trips.

If you only have an AB ticket, you need a „C” supplement to travel to zone C.

In the AB zone, you can also buy a short-trip ticket (Kurzstrecke) for a maximum of 3 metro or S-Bahn stops, or 6 bus or tram stops.

The 4-trip collective ticket allows 4 trips and is available for AB and ABC zones.

The 4-trip short-trip ticket (4-Fahrten-Karte Kurzstrecke) contains 4 short-trip tickets, valid for a maximum of 3 metro or S-Bahn stops, or 6 bus or tram stops.

Day ticket, weekly pass

AB and ABC day tickets (24-Stunden-karte) are available, valid for 24 hours after validation.

Group day tickets (24-Stunden-Karte Kleingruppen) can be purchased for up to 5 people. Valid for 24 hours after validation.

AB and ABC 7-day passes (7-Tage-Karte) are available, valid until midnight of the 7th day. These allow free travel for up to 3 children aged 6-14 with an adult on holidays, weekends, and weekdays after 8 PM.

Prices can be found collected here!

Ticket prices

For prices, the first price is for those over 14, the second price is for ages 6-14 (except for the last row).

Ticket type

Price (€)

Plus information

Ticket „AB” zone

3.50 / 2.20

valid for 120 minutes

Ticket „ABC” zone

4.40 / 3.20

valid for 120 minutes

Short-trip ticket „AB” zone

2.40 / 1.90

max 3 stops on metro, 6 stops on tram

4-trip collective ticket „AB” zone

10.80 / 6.60

4-trip collective ticket „ABC” zone

15.00 / 10.60

4-trip short-trip ticket „ABC” zone

7.00 / 5.40

max 3 stops on metro, 6 stops on tram

Supplement for „C” zone

2.10 / 1.60

supplement for „AB” zone ticket

24-hour ticket „AB” zone

9.90 / 6.50

7-day passes „AB” zóna

41.50

single price for children over 6 years

Munich’s transport is very well organised, making it very easy to use public transport in the Bavarian capital.

Airport

Munich has one airport (Franz Josef Strauss International Airport) with two terminals, located 30 km north of the city center.

The fastest way to reach the city center is by suburban train: the S1 and S8 lines have separate stops at the airport, departing at about 10-minute intervals. Both stop at Marienplatz and Hauptbahnhof (main station) as well. The journey time is approximately 40 minutes.

The S8 train operates between 4 AM and 1 AM. Exact timetables can be found here (enter „S8” on the Timetable page)!

The city tickets are not valid for these trains, you need an AirportPLUS-Ticket, which can be purchased online, via mobile application, and at ticket machines.

The Lufthansa Express Bus is a direct bus service between the airport and Munich Hauptbahnhof. It runs every 20 minutes every day, with a journey time of about 45 minutes. All information (timetable, ticket prices, etc.) can be found here!

Additionally, the airport can also be reached by Flixbus and regional trains from other cities. All options are summarized here!

Munich City public transport

Munich’s public transport system consists of four types of vehicles: U-Bahn (subway), S-Bahn (suburban train), tram, and bus.

Munich is divided into zones: tourists will mostly need the central city zone, Zone M. (The airport is not included in this zone.)

Ticket types

Travel is free for children under 6 years! Discounted fares apply for ages 6-14.

A single trip ticket (Einzelfahrkarte) is valid for one journey. There is also a „Kurzstrecke,” valid for 1 hour (recommended for city center travel). Tickets bought on trams or buses are valid for that journey only and do not require validation.

The day ticket (Single-Tageskarten) applies to a calendar day. It is valid on the day of validation and until 6 AM the following day.

The group day ticket (Gruppen-Tageskarte) is also valid on the day of validation and until 6 AM the next day. Up to 5 adults can travel with it, but 6-14-year-olds count as half. Ideal for families. (For example, two adults and four 6-14-year-olds can travel together.)

There is also a child day ticket (Kinder-Tageskarte) for 6-14-year-olds. This is worth buying for one adult and one child. It is valid on the day of validation and until 6 AM the following day.

Prices of tickets

Ticket type

Price (€)

Plus information

AirportPLUS-Ticket (city-airport)

15.50

S1 és S8 train

Lufthansa Express Bus (city-airport)

12.00 / 19.30

single / return

Single trip ticket

3.90 / 1.80

adult / 6-14 ages

1 hour ticket (Kurzstrecke)

1.90

Day ticket

9.20 / 3.60

adult / 6-14 ages

Group day ticket

17.80

Child day ticket

3.60

6-14 ages

Ticket purchase

Ticket machines are available at every subway station, offering all types of tickets.

Tickets can also be purchased via the MVV-App, available for iPhone and Android.

Tickets can be purchased from machines located on buses and trams as well.

All information (ticket prices, journey planner, etc.) can be found here!

Tourist passes

There are two good options for those who want to visit multiple paid attractions.

Both options can be combined with free public transport in the city center.

With the Munich Card, you can purchase tickets at discounted prices at listed locations.

The Munich City Pass allows free entry to many places and discounted entry to others.

All information can be found here! (The list of attractions is under the Attractions menu.)

Dresden is an outstanding German city in terms of culture and art. Here I present the eight best museums found here!

The best museums in Dresden

Old Masters Picture Gallery

Located in the Zwinger complex, this museum houses one of the world’s most significant painting collections. It primarily showcases European painting masterpieces from the 15th to 18th centuries.

The foundation of the collection was laid by Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony, which was created for Saxon rulers and aristocracy to express their power. It was opened to the public in 1855.

We can see over 750 paintings originating from various parts of Europe, including works by Italian, Spanish, French, Dutch, and German masters. One of the most famous pieces in the collection is Vermeer’s „Girl with a Pearl Earring”. Other outstanding works include pieces by Rembrandt, Titian, and Albrecht Dürer.

All information can be found here!

Green Vault

Located in the Dresden Castle, this museum reflects the wealth and artistic taste of Saxon electors and kings.

It consists of two parts: the Historisches Grünes Gewölbe (Historic Green Vault) and the Neues Grünes Gewölbe (New Green Vault). In the Historic Green Vault, objects are displayed in restored baroque-style rooms as they were visible in Augustus the Strong’s time. The New Green Vault’s modern exhibition spaces are equipped with the latest technology for proper protection of the objects.

It consists of over 4000 items, including jewelry, goldsmith’s work, precious stones, coins, as well as rare and valuable art pieces. Among the most famous pieces are the „Tears of Aurora” (a group of precious stones), as well as unique furnishings adorned with precious stones. The collection showcases artistic and craft creations from different eras, highlighting the richness of Saxon art and craftsmanship.

All information can be found here!

German Military History Museum

One of Germany’s most important military history institutions.

The museum, opened in 1897, was last significantly renovated in 2011 when a huge steel viewing platform was placed in the middle of the building, designed by famous American architect Daniel Libeskind.

Its collection consists of over 10,000 objects covering the period from the Middle Ages to the present day. The exhibited items include uniforms, weapons, medals, artworks, as well as modern military equipment. The exhibitions are arranged thematically, presenting military conflicts and their social impacts not only in German but also in European and world historical contexts.

All information can be found here!

Porcelain Collection

One of the world’s most important and valuable porcelain collections is located in the Zwinger Palace.

It contains more than 20,000 pieces. It is particularly famous for Meissen porcelain, which was Europe’s first hard-paste porcelain. A significant part of the collection consists of Chinese and Japanese porcelain from the 17th and 18th centuries.

All information can be found here!

Dresden’s architecture and art collections make it one of Germany’s most beautiful cities, offering numerous attractions in this Saxon settlement.

The city is the political center of Saxony, housing the headquarters of the Saxon state parliament and government, as well as numerous state authorities.

The city is often called the „Florence of the Elbe”, originally due to its art collections, Baroque and Mediterranean architecture, and its picturesque and climatically favorable location. It is considered one of Europe’s greenest cities.

Much of the city center as we know it today is reconstructed and rebuilt. This is due to the Allied air forces’ bombing of Dresden, which resulted in the complete destruction of the entire city center.

Dresden attractions

Dresden Castle

One of Germany’s most significant cultural treasures, located in the old town.

The original, much smaller palace was built in the 16th century and burned down in 1701. It was then rebuilt and expanded. Augustus the Strong made the palace his permanent residence, which thereafter became the residence of the Saxon princes. It gained its current Neo-Renaissance exterior in the early 1900s.

The castle houses the Green Vault, which is the treasury of the Saxon royal family. This will be described in more detail below.

The castle also hosts numerous other exhibitions, such as the porcelain exhibition showcasing the famous Meissen porcelain, and the armory displaying a wide range of historical armor and weapons. Additionally, in the Old Masters Picture Gallery, we can see works by Raphael, Rembrandt, and Rubens.

Frauenkirche

One of Dresden’s most significant attractions, also rebuilt.

It was once one of the most beautiful and significant Protestant churches in all of Germany, which was destroyed in World War II. The ruins were left for decades as a memorial to the Second World War. After reconstruction, the consecration took place in 2005.

The church is not only a symbol of Dresden but also of reunified Germany, representing peace and reconciliation.

Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (Hofkirche)

The church’s clock tower and dome on the banks of the Elbe is one of Dresden’s defining sights.

Construction began in 1738 based on plans by Gaetano Chiaveri and was completed in 1751. The church was originally intended as the court church of the Saxon electors and kings, which is reflected in its magnificent execution. During construction, elements of the Rococo style appeared alongside late Baroque features, which can be seen in the rich decoration of the interior.

The church houses a famous organ that often plays during musical events. Classical concerts are regularly held.

Zwinger

One of Dresden’s most famous and spectacular Baroque building complexes, notable not only for its architectural beauty but also for the cultural treasures preserved in its museums.

Built on the orders of Augustus the Strong from 1709 to 1728, it was designed by the Italian Baroque architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann. The building complex served as a place of entertainment for the royal court, where lavish celebrations and garden parties were held.

The complex has a U-shaped layout, with a huge Baroque garden decorated with statues and fountains at its center. The Zwinger’s magnificent facades and decorated pavilions offer a stunning sight. The most significant buildings include the Glockenspielpavillon (Carillon Pavilion), the Wallpavillon (Wall Pavilion), and the Kronentor (Crown Gate).

It is also the headquarters of several museums. One of the most important is the Semper Gallery, which bears the name Old Masters Picture Gallery (Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister). You can read more about this below.

Another important section is the Porzellansammlung (Porcelain Collection), which contains one of the world’s largest and most valuable collections of Meissen porcelain. It also houses the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon (Mathematical-Physical Salon), which displays a wide range of historical scientific instruments, including clocks, globes, and telescopes.

Semper Opera House

A defining venue not only for Germany’s but the world’s opera literature and performing arts life.

It is named after the architect Gottfried Semper, who designed the original building in the 1840s. Above the main entrance stands J. Schilling’s bronze group: a quadriga with Dionysus and Ariadne. In the wall recesses are statues of Shakespeare, Sophocles, Molière, and Euripides, while in front of the entrance stand statues of Goethe and Schiller.

Its interior is considered one of the most beautiful opera houses: the five levels of the auditorium are equipped with elegant boxes, rich decorations, and wonderful ceiling frescoes.

Fürstenzug

The Procession of Princes is one of Dresden’s most famous and beautiful artistic creations. The 102-meter-long ceramic fresco can be seen on the outer wall of the Long Gallery on Augustusstraße.

The work depicts members of the House of Wettin, Saxony’s ruling dynasty, in a horseback procession that spans over 700 years of history, from 1127 to 1904. The creation features a total of 35 Saxon dukes, electors, and kings, surrounded by scholars, artists, and craftsmen, symbolizing the historical and cultural significance of the dynasty.

It was originally created between 1871 and 1876 based on a painting by Wilhelm Walther, but the weather-exposed paintings soon faded. Therefore, between 1904-1907, the fresco was transferred to 23,000 porcelain tiles at the Meissen porcelain manufactory. Thanks to this, we can see it in its original form today.

Brühl’s Terrace

The riverside promenade offers a unique panorama of the river and the city.

The terrace is named after Heinrich von Brühl, a Saxon statesman who lived in the mid-18th century and had a great impact on the development of the area. It originally served as part of the city’s defensive walls in the 1500s but was later transformed and expanded to function as an elegant promenade for the urban elite.

Today it is home to several important buildings, such as the Academic Art University, the Painting Hall, the Albertinum Museum, and the former Wackerbarth Palace.

Kreuzkirche

One of Dresden’s iconic buildings that perfectly symbolizes the city’s history.

The church has been destroyed five times over the centuries and rebuilt five times. In its current form, it can be seen according to the plans of Schmid and Exner. The church burned out in 1945 and was restored by 1955.

The church has a characteristic tower that offers a stunning view of the city.

Großer Garten

Dresden’s largest and one of its most significant public parks, covering an area of approximately 1.8 square kilometers.

The park was created in the 17th century as a hunting park but was later transformed into a public venue. In the central part is the Sommerpalais, an elegant small castle that now functions as a museum and event venue.

There is also a small zoo and a botanical garden.

Best museums in Munich

Deutsches Museum (German Museum)

Located on Museum Island, this is the world’s largest museum of technology.

The museum boasts a collection of about 28,000 items. In the gigantic building, you can trace the development of mining as well as astronomy, and even see the first German submarine, cut open to reveal its inner workings. A main attraction of the museum is a realistically constructed underground mine.

All information can be found here!

Alte Pinakothek (Old Picture Gallery)

Founded in 1836, this picture gallery is housed in a large neoclassical building and contains nearly 900 paintings.

The displayed paintings range from the works of medieval painters (14th century) to the mid-18th century, considered one of the best museums in the world in its field. The collection was established in the 16th and 17th centuries by Bavarian dukes, particularly with works by Albrecht Dürer.

Significant are the works of 15th-16th century German masters, including Stephan Lochner, Hans Memling (who painted the life of the Virgin Mary), Michael Pacher, Martin Schongauer, Hans Holbein, Matthias Grünewald, Albrecht Altdorfer. The collection is rich in Italian and Netherlandish works, including more than 30 paintings each by Tiziano Vecellio, Rembrandt, and Van Dyck.

All information can be found here!

Neue Pinakothek (New Picture Gallery)

Located opposite the Old Picture Gallery, it primarily focuses on 19th-century European fine arts.

It was the first fine arts museum in the world to collect and display contemporary artists’ works. Notable are the works of Munich painters.

Today, the collection of about 6,000 paintings and sculptures spans from the Enlightenment, with works by Goya and Jacques-Louis David, to Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne, covering the late 18th century to the early 20th century. The main artistic movements represented are Classicism, Romanticism, Art Nouveau, and Impressionism.

All information can be found here!

Pinakothek der Moderne

One of Munich’s most significant modern and contemporary art museums, comprising four different museum institutions: Modern Art Collection, International Design Museum, New Collection (Sammlung Moderne Kunst), and Graphic Collection.

The museum’s vast collection spans artworks from the early 20th century to the present day. Included are works by well-known artists such as Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, and Andy Warhol.

The design section features significant works by designers like Eames, Mies van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier.

All information can be found here!

Bayerisches Nationalmuseum (Bavarian National Museum)

One of Germany’s largest art museums, divided into two main groups: art history and ethnographic collections.

The art collection displays artifacts in more than forty rooms, ranging from Late Antiquity and Romanesque art to Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassicism, and Art Nouveau. The museum’s western wing houses the Bollert collection with late medieval sculptures.

The museum is particularly renowned for its collection of carved ivory, goldsmith works, textiles, stained glass, tapestries, and altarpieces.

All information can be found here!

Lenbachhaus

Primarily focuses on 19th and 20th-century arts. The museum is named after Franz von Lenbach, a famous 19th-century German painter, whose neo-baroque home and studio were transformed into a museum.

Its significance is largely due to the „Der Blaue Reiter” expressionist art group. This collection includes works by Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc, August Macke, and Paul Klee, which had a significant impact on modern art.

The museum also features works by 19th-century Munich painters, as well as other modern and contemporary art pieces.

All information can be found here!

BMW Museum

Presents the history of the BMW car manufacturing company over 5000 square meters, with more than 120 exhibits.

The building itself is futuristic, designed by Karl Schwanzer, a professor from Vienna, who also designed the BMW headquarters. The roughly circular base is only 20 meters in diameter, with a flat roof extending about 40 meters.

The museum exhibits include engines, turbines, airplanes, motorcycles, and vehicles, with many real models on display.

All information can be found here!

Bier- und Oktoberfestmuseum (Beer and Oktoberfest Museum)

Since Munich hosts the world’s largest beer festival, naturally, a museum was established for it.

The long history of beer brewing in Munich is showcased, along with its process. There’s also a tavern for thirsty museum visitors.

A separate floor is dedicated to the more than 200-year history of Oktoberfest, with impressive exhibition items waiting for visitors.

Opened in 1930, the museum is divided into three main sections: the Museum of the Ancient Near East, the Museum of Islamic Art, and the Museum of Classical Antiquities.

Its most popular exhibit is the Pergamon Altar, a massive remnant of a Greek temple, but other impressive items include the Ishtar Gate of Babylon and the reconstruction of the Market Gate of Miletus.

The Museum of Islamic Art offers a rich collection of medieval and later Islamic art objects, including carpets, ceramics, and jewelry.

All information can be found here!

The gallery, built in red sandstone and resembling a classical Greek temple resting on a 12-meter pedestal, lacks colonnades on its sides. Since the 1950s, an equestrian statue of Frederick William IV has stood in front of the building.

Many significant paintings by the German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich are exhibited here. The collection also includes works by the Berlin architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, paintings by Karl Blechen, portraits by Philipp Otto Runge and Gottlieb Schick.

The exhibition includes works by French Impressionists Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, and Paul Cezanne.

Bode Museum

The museum, originally opened in 1904 as the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum, suffered extensive damage during World War II and reopened late in 2006. It is the northernmost building on Museum Island, often featured in images.

The museum’s main collections are medieval European sculptures, Byzantine art, and a coin collection. All three thematic collections are of international significance.

Its sixty-six rooms house 1,700 small and large sculptures (in ivory, marble, wood), more than 150 paintings, and 4,000 coins.

All information can be found here!

Berlin is an important European center for politics, media, culture, and science, as well as one of the most visited major cities in Europe.

The capital city of Germany was the most famous location of the Cold War due to the Berlin Wall. After reunification, Berlin maintained its leading role. About one-third of the city’s area is made up of forests, parks, gardens, rivers, canals, and lakes.

Berlin attractions

Brandenburg Gate

One of Germany’s most visited attractions and a symbol of Berlin.

Throughout its more than three-hundred-year history, it has served many different functions: a symbol of peace, war, victory, terror, and above all, war (at the time, the Cold War), and since 1989, a monument to German reunification.

It was here that Ronald Reagan spoke his famous words: „Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.”

Access: U55 metro to Bundestag station; Bus 100 to Reichstag/Bundestag stop.

Holocaust Memorial

Next to the Brandenburg Gate is this park, which aims to remind visitors of the horrors of the Holocaust and the suffering of its victims.

The memorial is located on a 19,000 square meter area covered with 2,711 concrete columns of varying heights and arrangements. The columns stand on undulating terrain with gradually rising stone blocks.

It’s a moving experience to walk through here and go down to the information center at the end, but it’s definitely worth doing! Here you can find photographs, documents, and life stories that provide deeper insight into this dark chapter of history.

Entry is free!

Reichstag

It functioned as the parliament of the German Empire until it was set on fire in 1933, and since 1999 it has once again been home to the German legislature.

Its glass dome is one of Berlin’s top attractions, offering an unforgettable view of the German capital from its viewing platform, and you can even see into the Bundestag’s plenary chamber!

Entry to the dome is free, but online registration is required! All information and registration can be found here!

Checkpoint Charlie

It was the most famous border crossing between East and West Berlin, and this checkpoint became a symbol of the Cold War. Following the erection of the Berlin Wall in 1961, this point was the site of the famous standoff between American and Soviet tanks.

Directly to the right of the wall, in the Mauermuseum (Checkpoint Charlie Museum), you can see some of the most unusual vehicles used for escapes, such as the one-person submarine, and other exhibits documenting what happened during the division.

Access: U6 metro to Kochstrasse/Checkpoint Charlie station.

Berlin Wall Memorial

This remaining piece of the Berlin Wall commemorates the wall that divided Germany and Berlin during the Cold War.

Since 1999, an exhibition and documentation center has been operating, showcasing the former border barrier and informing visitors about the wall, daily life around it, and its fall.

Entry is free!

Access: U8 metro, M10 tram to Bernauer Strasse station.

Berlin Cathedral (Dom)

A Protestant cathedral on the northern part of the Spree River island, known as Museum Island.

The building was constructed between 1894 and 1905 based on designs by architect Julius Raschdorff, during the reign of Emperor Wilhelm II. Built in neo-baroque style, its distinctive green dome is a defining element of the city’s skyline.

The crypt beneath the cathedral serves as the final resting place for numerous significant rulers and family members of the Hohenzollern dynasty. This crypt is one of the largest royal burial sites in Europe.

It is the most significant Protestant church building in Germany. It often hosts concerts as well.

The 98-meter-high dome offers a full panoramic view of the city, worth admiring Berlin from here. You can reach it via 270 steps.

All information can be found here!

Gendarmenmarkt

Located in the historic city center, often referred to as Berlin’s most beautiful square. It got its name from the gendarme regiment (Gens d’Armes) stationed here in 1703.

The square features the French and German Cathedrals, the Schauspielhaus, and a statue of Schiller. But when in the square, don’t just look ahead, look down too! Quotes from famous German figures are engraved on the square’s pavement.

Access: U6 metro to Französische Strasse; U2 metro to Stadtmitte or Hausvogteiplatz station.

The Oberbaum Bridge is a double-deck bridge crossing the Spree River in Berlin and is considered one of the city’s landmarks.

It connects Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg, districts once separated by the wall, making it an important symbol of Berlin’s unity.

Charlottenburg Palace

It’s a bit further from the center, but it’s considered Berlin’s most beautiful palace, so it’s worth a visit. In 1705, King Frederick I asked the builders to make the castle similar to Versailles.

In the center of the palace are the Hohenzollern apartments and the Porcelain Room, whose ceiling is decorated with Chinese and Japanese figures. The palace garden features elements of both French and English styles.

Sony Center

So that Berlin doesn’t miss out on modern style, an open shopping center was built on Potsdamer Platz, connected by a steel structure. In the dark, it lights up in different colors, making it worth visiting at night.

Access: U2 metro, S1, S2 train to Potsdamer Platz station.

Attractions in Munich

Marienplatz

Marienplatz is Munich’s main square, located in the heart of the old town.

Its most beautiful building is the New Town Hall. The neo-Gothic building was constructed by Georg Hauberrisser between 1867 and 1908.

The facade features statues of Bavarian kings, electors, and allegorical figures symbolizing Munich. The facade facing the square is about 100 meters long, and the tower is 85 meters high. The tower houses one of Europe’s largest carillons, featuring over 30 figures on its balcony.

On the eastern side of the square is the striking, white Old Town Hall. Built in the 15th century in Gothic style, it was later remodeled in various styles. It currently houses a toy museum (Spielzeugmuseum).

St. Peter’s Church

Located on a street opening from Marienplatz, this church is built in the Bavarian Romanesque style.

Notable features include the altar of Christ, the protective altar of Mary, and Erasmus Grasser’s Aresinig epitaph. Another curiosity is the jeweled skeleton of Saint Munditia.

The tower also serves as an observation deck, offering a fantastic panorama of the immediate downtown area. All information can be found here!

Our Lady’s Church (Frauenkirche)

Not far from Marienplatz, you’ll find one of Munich’s oldest and largest churches.

Its distinctive features are the two tall towers topped with green domes. The royal crypt, accessible by stairs, contains the tombs of Bavarian rulers from Louis IV to Louis III of the Wittelsbach dynasty in the 20th century.

The most impressive church in Munich

Isar Gate

Approaching from the direction of the Isar River, this is one of the four main gates of the medieval city wall.

It served as a defensive fortress and is the easternmost of Munich’s three remaining Gothic city gates. A museum dedicated to comedian and actor Karl Valentin is currently housed in the building.

Sendling Gate

Located at the southwestern end of the old town, this is another important former city gate.

It acquired its current appearance in 1906, when the previous three-arched wall was replaced with a large archway flanked by two side towers.

Victory Gate (Siegestor)

Originally dedicated to the glory of the Bavarian army, this three-arched gate now serves as a reminder of peace following its post-World War II restoration.

While some find it a bit characterless, it’s worth a visit when on Leopoldstrasse as a southern closure to the street.

It was dedicated to the army, but became a symbol of peace

Munich Residence

The former palace of the Bavarian dukes, electors, and kings is located in the northern part of the old town.

This building complex is Germany’s largest city palace and one of Europe’s largest art museums. It features a mix of architectural styles: Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, and Classicism.

The palace complex surrounds ten courtyards and consists of three major building groups: the Königsbau (or „King’s Building”) facing Max-Joseph Square, the Maximilianische Residenz or Alte Residenz with a façade opening onto Residenzstraße, and the Festsaalbau facing the Hofgarten park.

A significant portion of the palace’s vast interior is occupied by the Residenzmuseum, with 130 rooms open to visitors.

Hofgarten

The garden behind the Munich Residence is a charming park and a popular relaxation spot.

At the center of the garden is the pavilion dedicated to the goddess Diana, from whose eight arches pathways radiate outward. There is also a fountain located here.

The Hofgarten is a popular pedestrian area

The Church of the Theatines

Located next to the Hofburg on Odeonsplatz, this church was built as a result of a vow.

Henrietta Adelaide of Savoy, wife of Elector Ferdinand Maria of Bavaria, made the vow in 1659, wishing to express her gratitude for the birth of the heir to the throne by building a court church. An Italian architect was commissioned, making it the first Italian late Baroque style church built north of the Alps.

It became the burial place for the Wittelsbach Bavarian ruling house, currently housing 47 of its members, including several Bavarian electors and kings, in its crypt.

Englischer Garten

Located to the north of the old town, along the Isar River, this 417-hectare city park is the largest of its kind in Europe, even larger than New York’s Central Park.

Created in 1789 by American Benjamin Thompson, known as Count Rumford, during the reign of Charles Theodore, Elector of Bavaria and the Palatinate, the park’s name „English Garden” refers to its style of layout.

The park houses several decorative buildings, including the Monopteros, a Roman-style circular temple with Ionic capitals, and the so-called Chinese Tower, surrounded by a beer garden.

Maximilianeum

Located along the Isar River, this beautiful building serves as the home of the Bavarian state parliament.

It originally housed a foundation supporting talented students. Severely damaged in World War II, it became the seat of the parliament in 1949.

The Angel of Peace (Friedensengel)

Next to the Luitpold Bridge over the Isar River stands a 38-meter-high Corinthian column, topped by a six-meter statue of the Angel of Peace.

The statue commemorates 25 years of peace following the 1870-71 Franco-Prussian War. The monument features portraits of notable figures, including Emperor William I, Bismarck, and Frederick II.

Golden mosaics in the column’s base hall depict allegories of war and peace, victory, and culture.

Nymphenburg Palace

Located west of the city center, this palace is one of Munich’s most impressive buildings. It was built in the 17th century by Elector Ferdinand Maria of Bavaria as a summer residence for the Wittelsbachs.

The palace complex includes several buildings with the central part open to visitors. A vast park with multiple lakes and connecting canals surrounds it.

One wing houses a carriage and sleigh museum, and there’s a porcelain museum on the upper floor.

Oktoberfest

Munich’s, and perhaps Germany’s, largest event is the Oktoberfest beer festival held in autumn at Theresienwiese.

This event attracts millions from around the world. For this occasion, Munich breweries brew a special beer (Wiesnbier), stronger than usual.

I spent a few hours there and felt the effect of two liters of beer quite well. Attractive ladies serve beer to singing guests on tables in the tents. It’s worth experiencing the atmosphere at least once.

Bavaria Statue

Located on the Theresienwiese grounds, this bronze statue represents Bavaria’s homeland, strength, and glory.

The 8.9-meter-tall figure stands on a 9.6-meter stone base, weighing approximately 87 tons. Created in the 1840s, it’s the first colossal statue made entirely of cast bronze since classical antiquity and is still considered a technological masterpiece.

An internal spiral staircase leads to an observation point in the statue’s head, offering views of Theresienwiese and Munich’s downtown.
This city park hosted the 1972 Summer Olympics, with the venue’s facilities still standing and currently used for events, concerts, and sports activities.

The park’s most famous building is the Olympiastadion, once home to Bayern Munich.

Additionally, it’s worth visiting the 290-meter-tall Olympic Tower for fantastic city views. All information can be found here!

Germany’s top attractions include more than just the big cities. Thanks to its history and its natural beauty, there are plenty of attractions to admire.

Germany is not only one of the leading countries in Europe, but in the world. Its history goes back a long way, symbolising its status as a great power. Many of its buildings and sites are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Its castle and fortress architecture should be highlighted. Its land borders are Denmark to the north, Poland and the Czech Republic to the east, Austria and Switzerland to the south, and France and the Benelux countries to the west.

Berlin

Berlin is a significant European center of politics, media, culture, and science, no wonder the capital is packed with attractions.

The city’s present is defined by its history: the Brandenburg Gate, a section of the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, and the Holocaust Memorial all recall slices of the past.

Culture is also an integral part of the city. There are numerous museums in Berlin, most of which are on the specially designed Museum Island. Besides the „traditional” ones, several focus on the last hundred years, such as the Stasi Museum or the GDR Museum.

Black Forest

Located in southwestern Germany, it’s the country’s most important tourist region and most popular resort area. The Danube River also originates from here.

The name probably makes many think. The mountain range got its name from the dark color of the numerous coniferous trees found here.

There are countless waterfalls, gorges, and hiking trails in this area, making it a perfect spot for those who enjoy active excursions.

Munich

The capital of Bavaria is one of the world’s most livable cities. It’s best known for Oktoberfest and the Bayern Munich football team.

Besides its charming city center, the Nymphenburg Palace attracts tourists. Built in the 17th century in Baroque style, both the building and its park are must-see sights in the city.

The aforementioned Oktoberfest is one of the world’s largest folk festivals, held since 1810. For this occasion, breweries brew special beers, which should be consumed cautiously due to their high alcohol content. After consuming two one-liter beers, I felt quite good. 🙂

Neuschwanstein Castle

Who hasn’t seen this wonderful castle in pictures! The 19th-century Bavarian castle is among the world’s most famous.

The building, located in the southern part of Germany in the municipality of Schwangau on a rock in the Pöllat Gorge, was commissioned by Ludwig II, King of Bavaria, to realize his childhood dreams. Due to his admiration and respect for Richard Wagner, some rooms and decorations in the castle are themed after the characters in Wagner’s operas.

Neuschwanstein inspired the Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland, Los Angeles, and was the basis for the castle in the Cinderella animated film.

Saxon Switzerland National Park

The name might be misleading, as the park is not in Switzerland but on the border with the Czech Republic. It got its name because Swiss painters traveled here and named the region.

Its most famous natural formations are the sandstone table mountains. Among these, the most famous is Bastei, which rises about 200 meters above the Elbe. We can admire the rocks closely from a bridge.

Dresden

The city is often called the Florence of the Elbe, originally due to its art collections, Baroque and Mediterranean architecture, and its picturesque and climatically favorable location.

Dresden is internationally known as a cultural city, with numerous important buildings like the Baroque Zwinger, outstanding museums, and famous orchestras like the Saxon State Orchestra or the Kreuzchor.

Most of the city center we know today is reconstructed and renovated. This is due to the bombing of Dresden, which resulted in the complete destruction of the city center.

In 1434, one of the world’s oldest and most famous Christmas markets, the Dresdener Striezelmarkt, was established here.

Moritzburg Castle

If we’re in Dresden, we must not miss the castle 13 km away. It’s a Baroque hunting lodge built on an artificial island. A beautiful example of medieval castle architecture.

Prince Moritz of Saxony had it built in the 16th century. The castle was continuously beautified, and its park and several surrounding lakes were created in the first half of the 18th century. The main function of the castle was the nobility’s hunting, and we can still admire its splendor today.

There are more than 100 rooms, with a special feature being the leather wallpaper covering about 60 rooms. Both the castle and the park are open to visitors.

Possibly Germany’s most beautiful lake, near the German-Austrian border. Known not only for its beauty but also for the echo that forms on the lake.

Electric boats operate on the lake, docking at two places. One of these is the St. Bartholomew’s Church, named after the saint with a special onion dome, beautifully situated on the lakeshore.

Cologne

Situated along the Rhine, Cologne, with its history spanning over 2000 years, is one of Germany’s oldest cities. This is reflected in the city’s beauty.

The city’s symbol is, of course, the Gothic cathedral, the Cologne Cathedral. A World Heritage site, it was built over a long period, from 1248 to 1880. Its towers are over 150 meters tall, and with its spires, it reaches a height of 157 meters, making it the second tallest church in Germany and the third tallest in the world.

Another distinctive religious building is the Great St. Martin Church. Its unique feature is a tower much taller than usual, significantly increasing the building’s overall height.

Sanssouci Park, Potsdam

Located 40 km west of Berlin, in the city of Potsdam, this was a former Prussian royal palace complex.

The foundation of the palace and the accompanying park was laid down by Frederick the Great in 1744. Compared to contemporary European courts, it is a modest late Baroque or Rococo palace, regarded as a major work of Knobelsdorff, and was completed in two years. This residence and its gardens, often referred to as the „Prussian Versailles” were declared a part of the world’s cultural heritage by UNESCO in 1990.

The palace was smaller during Frederick the Great’s time and was gradually expanded with new parts. This was when the Peace Temple, the Orangery, and the Marly Garden were built in the garden.

If you are in Berlin and have a free day, it’s definitely worth taking a train to visit this place!

The 45-hectare area is almost entirely filled with thousands of flowers, and the flowers in the park are arranged so that their wilting is not noticeable.

Another attraction is the butterfly house. Numerous colorful butterflies flutter in the air. Interestingly, the butterflies are extremely gentle and friendly.

In the old town, numerous monuments can be seen. Among these, the most famous is the old town hall, which stands on a small island, providing a splendid sight. It currently houses a porcelain museum.

Officially known as Marburg an der Lahn, it is located halfway between Frankfurt and Kassel.

A charming town dominated by churches and a castle on a hillside, full of Gothic and Renaissance architectural memories. The preservation of the old monuments is due to the city’s decline between 1600 and 1850.

The counts’ castle was built on a 287-meter high hill and is visible from almost everywhere. It was the first residence of the counts of Hesse. It houses some of the largest Gothic halls in Central Europe in secular (non-ecclesiastical) architecture.

Famous for its medieval churches. Particularly worth mentioning is the Elisabeth Church, Germany’s oldest purely Gothic building and a symbol of the city. Here lies the final resting place of Paul von Hindenburg, the post-World War I president.

The building, which also houses the state parliament, operates as a museum and was previously the seat of the Obotrites (a Western Slavic tribe) for centuries. Among more than 2000 castles and manors in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the castle is considered the most famous and magnificent.

Near the city, on an extension of the Geisberg, stands the castle, most of which was destroyed in the 18th century. It has been gradually renovated since then, but a part is still in ruins. However, the view of the city is magnificent, and the castle is an imposing sight from below.

The castle gained its current form in the 19th century when it was rebuilt by King Frederick William IV of Prussia in an English neo-Gothic and Loire castle style. The last Prussian Crown Prince, William, was the only one to reside here. He and his wife, Crown Princess Cecilia, are still laid to rest here.

Not only its exterior but also its interior spaces are impressive. It has 140 rooms where you can admire golden chandeliers, sculptures, and cathedral-like ceilings.

Rakotzbrücke

This unusual bridge stands near the Polish border, in the vicinity of the town of Gablenz.

Known also as the Devil’s Bridge, it was built by the then-owner of the park, Friedrich Hermann Rötschke. The bridge is made of basalt, and its foundations resemble basalt columns.

The stone bridge spanning over Rakotzsee becomes a true Instagram spot under the right natural conditions. The nearly semi-circular bridge, reflecting on the water surface, appears to form a complete circle. It is forbidden to walk on the bridge, but this is not a big issue since the view from the side is truly spectacular.

Moselle Valley and its two most beautiful sights

The Moselle River, meandering between the Luxembourg border and Koblenz, is one of the most beautiful regions in Germany.

The most beautiful part of this hilly landscape is Cochem Castle (Reichsburg Cochem). In the town of the same name, the Moselle makes a 180-degree turn, where the castle rises above the town. Its interior is very beautiful, but its location and exterior are the real tourist attractions.

Another notable sight not far from the castle is Eltz Castle. Considered one of Germany’s most beautiful castles, it stands almost in its original state, as it was unaffected by any wars. The castle has been in the same family for 800 years, but today it is open to visitors.

Cologne, famous for its cathedral, is one of Germany’s most beautiful and most visited cities, worth stopping by and spending some time in.

The city, situated on the Rhine, dates back to Roman times and, with a history spanning over 2000 years, is one of Germany’s oldest cities. Its university is one of the oldest in Europe. Today, Cologne is the economic, cultural, and historical center of the Rhineland.

In the Middle Ages, it was a major commercial route between Eastern and Western Europe. During the medieval and Renaissance periods, Cologne was a leading member of the Hanseatic League and one of the largest cities north of the Alps.

Cologne Cathedral

Officially known as St. Peter and St. Mary’s Cathedral, it is one of the most significant Christian monuments in the world.

Its towers stand over 150 meters tall, and with its spires, it reaches a height of 157 meters, making it the second tallest church in Germany and the third tallest in the world. Due to its extraordinary ecclesiastical, historical, and artistic significance, the building was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996.

The Gothic structure began construction on August 15, 1248, the feast of the Assumption, according to the designs of the architect Gerhard von Rile, inspired by the Amiens Cathedral.

Its interior has uniquely withstood the ages. The stained glass windows, including the famous Bavarian windows in the south aisle, were donated by King Ludwig I of Bavaria. These depict scenes from the beginnings of Christianity, from Saint John the Baptist to Saint Stephen the Martyr.

One of the most beautiful Gothic churches in the world

Groß St. Martin

Another defining symbol in Cologne’s skyline, alongside the cathedral.

Built in Romanesque style, the church towers over the Rhine. Its triangular apse and massive square tower are visible from afar.

The church was constructed in the 12th century on the site of an earlier Merovingian church. It was severely damaged during World War II but has since been restored.

Hahnentor

One of the most important medieval city gates on the western side of the old town, part of the famous inner city wall.

Built in the 13th century as a key point in the city’s defense system. The gate’s name comes from a supposed rooster sculpture that once stood on one of its towers.

Today, it hosts cultural events and is also the venue for the Christmas market.

The former city gate

Ulrepforte

This gate stands on the southern side of the old town, also serving a defensive purpose.

The 13th-century stone watchtower has served multiple functions over the years, including customs duties. It suffered significant damage during World War II but has since been restored.

Chocolate Museum

Officially the Imhoff-Stollwerck Museum, it showcases the manufacture, history, and culture of chocolate.

Visitors can see objects related to chocolate production, such as the chocolate vending machines that were a novelty at the end of the 19th century. The museum also features special collections, such as gilded porcelain sets in which hot chocolate was served in past centuries.

A special part of the museum is dedicated to demonstrating the process of making chocolates. The museum also includes a gift shop and a confectionery where visitors can buy and taste the delicacies.

All information here!

4711 House

The building hosts a museum that displays the history and production process of cologne water.

Wilhelm Mülhens founded it at the end of the 18th century after a monk gave him the recipe for the miraculous water, known as Aqua Mirabilis. This later became known as Eau de Cologne, which quickly became popular for its unique fragrance composition, featuring citrus and medicinal effects. It is still produced according to the old recipe.

The building received the number 4711 during the French occupation, which later became the brand name. Since then, this number has become synonymous with high-quality cologne.

Schnütgen Museum

The museum primarily exhibits medieval Christian religious art, but its collection spans from antiquity to modern times.

Alexander Schnütgen donated his collection to the city in 1906, and it has been growing ever since. The museum has been housed in the Romanesque church of St. Cäcilien since 1956, which was expanded with new buildings in 2010.

The exhibits include items such as a Romanesque tympanum, large wooden crosses, and early bronze crosses.

Ludwig Museum

The museum emphasizes modern and contemporary art.

It was founded in 1976 by the collector couple Peter and Irene Ludwig, who supported the institution with significant donations. The collection ranges from the 1900s to the present day, including works by famous artists such as Picasso, Warhol, and Lichtenstein.

Cologne Cable Car

Introduced in 1957, it is considered the first cable car over a river in Europe.

The gondola cableway runs over the Rhine River, above the Zoobrücke. The cabin offers a spectacular view of the old town area to the south.

Hohe Strasse

Cologne’s shopping street, where numerous shops and restaurants are located.

This nearly 1 km long street runs north-south, starting from the cathedral up to St. Maria im Capitol basilica.

St. Gereon’s Church

Among the city’s Romanesque-style churches, this one is also noteworthy. Named after St. Gereon, who, according to legend, was a Roman soldier and the city’s first Christian martyr.

It is a prominent example of Cologne Romanesque. Significant parts include the remnants of a late ancient dome sanctuary from the mid-4th century. With the Trier Cathedral and the Basilica of Constantine in Trier, it is one of the oldest still functioning churches in present-day Germany.

Botanical Garden

Officially known as Flora und Botanischer Garten Köln, it is home to over 10,000 plant species.

Founded in the mid-19th century, today it spans a vast area of approximately 11.5 hectares. Visitors can explore plants from various climatic zones, including tropical and subtropical species.

Cologne Zoo

Founded in 1860, it is one of Germany’s oldest zoos, home to more than 700 species.

Notable attractions include the elephant house, the big cat biotope, and the rainforest house, where visitors can get up close with the tropical wildlife.
