Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii, is one of the most attractive destinations in the world: it boasts volcanic mountains, turquoise seas, and a rich Polynesian heritage.

The city is located on the southern shore of Oahu island, which belongs to the USA, and uniquely combines a relaxed island atmosphere with modern metropolitan life. Honolulu appeals to travelers interested in history, nature, and gastronomy alike: here on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, elements of Asian, American, and Polynesian culture converge.

Waikiki Beach

Honolulu’s iconic beach has been one of the most famous seaside resorts in the Pacific since the early 1900s. The two-kilometer-long white sandy beach stretches at the foot of the Diamond Head volcanic crater and now welcomes approximately 5–6 million visitors per year.

Its gradually deepening shallow water is ideal for beginner surfers, but it offers the full range of water sports: stand-up paddleboarding, snorkeling, kayaking, and catamaran tours are all available. The world’s very first surf schools were founded here in the early 20th century, making Waikiki the cradle of modern surf culture.

The promenade surrounding the beach, Kalakaua Avenue, is lined with restaurants, bars, and luxury hotels, and enchants visitors in the evening with live music and hula performances.

Diamond Head State Monument

One of Hawaii’s most recognizable natural symbols is this 232-meter extinct volcanic crater, which native Hawaiians named Ka Leahi (the brow of the tuna). The distinctively shaped mountain was named Diamond Head by British sailors in the early 1800s after they found calcite crystals on its slopes, which they mistakenly believed to be diamonds.

The trail leading to the crater rim is 1.6 kilometers long, with approximately 560 meters of elevation gain. Along the way, the hiker passes through military tunnels and old staircases, as a military observation post was established on the summit in the early 1900s, the remains of which are still visible today.

From the summit, a breathtaking 360-degree panorama opens up: from Waikiki beach to the blue Pacific Ocean and the entire southern Oahu plain. It is best to start the hike in the morning, although the view at sunset is equally stunning.

Pearl Harbor National Memorial

One of history’s most memorable sites, where on December 7, 1941, the Japanese Air Force attacked the Americans’ Pacific fleet base, directly triggering the United States’ entry into World War II. The memorial features four different visitor centers presenting the events.

The most iconic site is the USS Arizona Memorial, a white bridge-shaped structure built over the wreck of the attacked battleship. On the battleship, 1,177 sailors lost their lives, the majority of whom still rest beneath the ship’s remains.

On the USS Missouri battleship, also open to visitors, Japan’s unconditional surrender was signed in 1945. The entire Pearl Harbor complex can be explored both by land and by water, and advance online ticket purchase is strongly recommended to avoid long queues.

You can also tour the battleship

Iolani Palace

The only royal palace in the entire United States, built in 1882 on the commission of King Kalakaua. The building was constructed in a unique style known as American Florentine, which combines elements of Tuscan Renaissance and the Victorian era with Hawaiian traditions.

The palace had electric lighting and a telephone as early as the 1880s – electricity was introduced to the White House at the same time, meaning Hawaii was ahead of the presidential residence of the United States. In the former throne room, dining room, and royal bedrooms, visitors can view the original 19th-century furnishings and crown jewels.

In 1895, Queen Liliuokalani was held captive here after US forces overthrew the Kingdom of Hawaii. The palace is at once a symbol of Hawaiian cultural heritage and colonial history.

Chinatown Honolulu

A historic district in the downtown area, settled in the second half of the 19th century by Chinese workers who arrived to work on sugar plantations. The neighborhood burned down in 1886 and again in 1900, then was rebuilt and still retains its original character today.

The Maunakea Street flower market and Kekaulike Market offer fresh tropical fruits, tofu, leafy greens, and live shellfish; it is most lively around 6 in the morning. The streets are filled with the scent of fragrant frangipani, incense smoke, and the aromas of Asian kitchens.

In recent years the neighborhood has undergone significant renovation: galleries, cocktail bars, and fine dining restaurants have opened in the old buildings, making Chinatown today a favorite district of the local creative class and food tourists alike.

Punchbowl Crater

This extinct volcanic tuff cone is located on the edge of downtown Honolulu. It takes its English name from its characteristic bowl-like shape.

It was a sacred place for ancient Hawaiians, but today it is best known as the home of the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. This dignified site is the final resting place of more than 50,000 veterans of the US armed forces, including heroes from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

From the crater rim, a breathtaking panorama opens over Honolulu and the nearby Diamond Head.

Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace

The oldest Catholic church in Hawaii and the center of the local diocese.

The building, consecrated in 1843, is one of the oldest continuously operating cathedrals in the United States. Located in downtown Honolulu, it holds special significance for the faithful as it is where Saint Damien, the Apostle to the Lepers, was ordained a priest in 1864.

The building’s simple, classicist style and walls built from coral limestone reflect the island’s unique architectural heritage. In 2014, Pope Francis elevated it to the rank of „minor basilica”.

Kapiolani Regional Park

Hawaii’s largest urban park was founded in 1877 by King Kalakaua and named in honor of his wife, Queen Kapiolani. The 170-hectare park stretches from Waikiki beach to the foot of Diamond Head.

The park is home to the Honolulu Zoo, whose tropical enclosures feature African elephants, lions, and Hawaiian wildlife birds. The Waikiki Shell outdoor amphitheater hosts all kinds of events, from Hawaii Symphony Orchestra summer concerts to rock concerts.

On weekends, picnickers and kite surfers create a pleasant atmosphere in the park. Around the Kapiolani Bandstand pavilion, free hula performances are held on Sunday mornings.

Ala Moana Beach Park

The park is an artificially reclaimed 50-hectare beachfront park, opened in the 1930s in an area adjacent to Waikiki. The sandy beach has shallow, current-free water, making it especially popular among local families.

A short walk from the beach stands Ala Moana Center, one of the largest shopping centers in the USA on Oahu, where more than 350 shops and restaurants await visitors.

It can be a real treat to go to the beach here

Lyon Arboretum

This 194-hectare botanical garden, founded in 1918 in the upper Manoa Valley, now belongs to the University of Hawaiʻi and collects nearly 5,000 species of tropical plants. The garden’s primary purpose was initially to restore watershed forest in previously destroyed areas.

The collection includes representatives of all native Hawaiian plant species, themed gardens (bamboo grove, ginger garden, bromeliad collection), and rare palm species. Walking along the trails, the sounds of the rainforest – birdsong, wind, dripping water – completely detach you from the urban world.

The Lyon Arboretum is an ideal starting point for the Manoa Falls hike; the garden itself can also be visited free of charge, though a small parking fee is charged. Open Monday through Saturday, closed on Sundays.

Manoa Falls Trail

Just 8 kilometers from Honolulu, this easy 2.5-kilometer trail leads through the jungle-like rainforest of Manoa Valley. At the end of the hike, a 24-meter waterfall awaits visitors, at the base of which a small pool has formed.

The trail passes through bamboo forests, giant ginger plantations, and frangipani groves; after rain, the vegetation is especially beautiful and the waterfall is particularly atmospheric. The valley’s climate is considerably wetter than the coastal areas, so bringing a rain jacket is strongly recommended.

Nearby is the Lyon Arboretum, the botanical garden of the University of Hawaiʻi. The hike and a visit to the arboretum together fill an entire morning.

We can go hiking in the jungle soon 🙂

Nu’uanu Pali Lookout

From this lookout point situated on a 360-meter cliff edge, an unparalleled panorama opens toward the entirely wind-exposed Windward Coast, across the emerald-green Ko’olau Mountains. Due to the strong, constantly blowing wind, tourists wear capes and jackets even in summer.

In 1795, the defenders of Oahu were cornered at the base of the Pali cliff face and suffered defeat at the hands of King Kamehameha I’s army, with many plunging into the depths from the rock. This battle made possible the unification of the Hawaiian islands, making Nu’uanu Pali one of the pivotal sites in Hawaiian history.

Several trails are also accessible along the Pali Highway leading to the lookout, including the Old Pali Road, which winds along the former stone-paved section through the rainforest.

Best museums in Honolulu

Honolulu Museum of Art

One of the largest and most prestigious fine arts museums in the Pacific region, founded in 1927. The original building was constructed in Mediterranean style and has since been expanded with several modern wings, which have preserved the courtyard and garden layout.

The collection includes more than 50,000 works from Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Pacific Island world; it is particularly rich in Japanese painting and East Asian decorative arts. The museum also houses Diego Rivera’s frescoes and James Michener’s renowned Japanese woodblock print collection.

The museum goes beyond its galleries: the café opening onto the inner courtyard and the museum shop are also worth a visit, and the film and performance program offers several hundred cultural events each year.

All information can be found here!

Bishop Museum

Founded in 1889 by Charles Reed Bishop in memory of his wife, Princess Pauahi. Today it houses the world’s largest collection of Hawaiian and Polynesian natural and cultural heritage. The basalt Victorian building complex holds the Hawaiian kingdom’s coronation jewels, stone carvings, and more than 25 million natural history specimens.

The museum’s Hawaii Hall presents Hawaiian lifestyle, mythology, and society, while Polynesian Hall illustrates the cultural diversity of the entire Pacific Island world. A special attraction is the Science Adventure Center’s interactive exhibition, which explores the themes of volcanism and oceanology.

Planetarium shows, the museum garden’s tropical plants, and regular cultural demonstrations (such as traditional Hawaiian dance and crafts) enrich the visitor experience.

All information can be found here!

Hawaii State Art Museum

Operating in the heart of the capital within the Capitol District, this state art museum has been the most important exhibition venue for Hawaiian fine arts since 2002. The Spanish Mission-style building erected in 1928, the No. 1 Capitol District Building, was previously home to the Army YMCA.

The collection contains approximately 5,000 works exclusively by Hawaiian or Hawaii-connected contemporary and modern artists; paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and textile works are all represented. Admission is free, and the annually changing temporary exhibitions always offer something new to discover.

All information can be found here!

Honolulu weather: when is the best time to visit?

Honolulu has a tropical oceanic climate with no marked seasonal changes: the average annual temperature hovers around 26–27 degrees Celsius. The two main seasons of the year are the summer dry season (May–September) and the winter rainy season (October–April), although the number of sunny days remains high even in winter.

Dry Season (May–September):

The hottest months last from July to September, when daytime high temperatures can reach 32–33 °C. The sky is mostly clear, the wind is gentler, and beach conditions are ideal for surfers and swimmers. Rain is rare, although brief tropical showers can occasionally occur.

Rainy Season (October–April):

Temperatures moderate to 23–27 °C, and rain is more frequent but rarely lasts long. Winter is the peak of whale watching season, when humpback whales heading toward Alaska’s southern waters can be spotted off the shores of Oahu. Tourist traffic is lower and hotel prices are more favorable.

Best time to visit to Honolulu:

The best time to visit Honolulu falls in the April–May and September–October months. During these periods, the weather is pleasant with temperatures around 25–28 °C, the beaches are less crowded, prices are more favorable compared to peak season, and you are between the end of the whale watching season (January–March) and before the rainy season begins. For those specifically planning whale watching, January–March is best, while those focused on surfing should note that large waves arrive from November to February on the northern shores (North Shore, Banzai Pipeline).

Maui is one of Hawaii’s most magical islands, full of impressive natural wonders, scenic panoramas, and rich cultural heritage. The island has rightfully earned the nickname „Valley Isle”!

Often called „The Pearl of the Pacific”, Maui is Hawaii’s second-largest island after the Big Island. With its diverse landscapes, volcanic mountains, and breathtaking coastlines, it’s a paradise for nature lovers.

Haleakalā National Park

One of Hawaii’s most impressive natural wonders and one of Maui’s most important attractions.

Rising to an elevation of 3,055 meters, the Haleakalā volcano („House of the Sun”) is located in the eastern part of the island. The crater of this extinct volcano is famous for one of the world’s most spectacular sunrises – many people climb to the summit before dawn to experience this unforgettable sight. The moon-like landscape surrounding the crater, with its reddish-brown color and unique rock formations, creates a stunning contrast with the blue sky.

The park features more than 30 kilometers of hiking trails with varying difficulty levels. The Sliding Sands Trail is the most famous, leading into the interior of the crater where visitors can admire the unique flora up close, including the silversword plant (Argyroxiphium sandwicense) found exclusively here.

During nighttime hours, the park is also a perfect location for astronomical observations, as the environment free from light pollution offers an unparalleled view of the starry sky.

Hāna Highway

This 84-kilometer scenic road section is known as one of Maui’s most iconic attractions, following the northern coastline of the island.

The road leads from Kahului to the town of Hāna and includes more than 600 curves and 59 bridges, many of which are single-lane. Along the road, visitors can find numerous waterfalls, bamboo forests, lava fields, botanical gardens, and hidden bays. The most famous stops include the Waikamoi Forest, the Keanae Peninsula, and the Wailua Falls, all worth a break during the journey.

It’s advisable to allocate at least a full day for this trip to see all the important attractions. Many choose to stay overnight in Hāna to avoid having to return on the same day. Locals often mention the phrase „Hāna mentality”, referring to a slow, relaxed lifestyle – this road shouldn’t be rushed either, as each turn reveals new, impressive sights.

Waiʻānapanapa State Park

This special park is one of Maui’s most unique attractions.

The park’s most famous feature is the black sand beach, Honokalani Black Sand Beach, which gets its color from volcanic rocks. The contrast created by the lush green vegetation surrounding the beach and the crystal-clear blue ocean provides a stunning view. The park also features a natural sea cave and a stone arch, which are popular photography spots.

The park is rich in hiking trails, along which you can see ruins of ancient Hawaiian temples (heiau), lava tubes, and natural rock formations. The name Waiʻānapanapa means „glistening water”, referring to the brightness of waves breaking on the black sand beach.

The area is connected to many Hawaiian legends, the most famous being the story of Princess Kihawahine, who hid in a rock cave due to heartbreak.

Popular part of the Black Sea coast

ʻĪao Valley State Monument

One of Maui’s most important historical and natural attractions, located in the central part of the island.

Among the impressive green mountains of the ʻĪao Valley, we find the ʻĪao Needle, a 370-meter-high volcanic rock tower that has become the symbol of the valley. The lush vegetation surrounding the needle and the crystal-clear ʻĪao Stream create a picturesque environment.

The area is significant not only for its natural beauty but also for its important role in Hawaiian history. In 1790, the legendary Battle of Kepaniwai took place here, when King Kamehameha united the Hawaiian islands. In memory of the battle, the park includes a botanical garden featuring traditional buildings and plants of various Polynesian cultures.

Lahaina

Maui’s former capital, and today one of the island’s most vibrant cultural and historical sites.

Along Front Street, buildings from the 19th century now house galleries, restaurants, and shops.

Perhaps the town’s most iconic attraction is the giant banyan tree in Banyan Tree Square, planted in 1873, which has now expanded to more than 16 trunks and covers more than 8,000 square meters. This tree is one of the largest of its kind in the United States.

Whale-watching tours (between December and May) depart from Lahaina Harbor, as well as ferries to the neighboring islands of Lanai and Molokai. The town is home to several historical sites maintained by the Lahaina Restoration Foundation, including the Baldwin Home Museum and the Hale Paʻi printing museum.

Whale watching tours depart from here

Molokini Crater

This crescent-shaped underwater volcanic crater is located 4 kilometers off the coast of Maui and is one of the best diving sites in the world.

The Molokini Crater is a partially submerged volcanic cone that provides natural protection to the inner lagoon, home to more than 250 fish species. The crystal-clear water allows visibility of up to 45 meters, creating ideal conditions for diving and snorkeling. On the inner side of the crater, we can swim in shallow water, while experienced divers can descend along the steep walls on the outer side.

The island is also a state marine life conservation district and bird sanctuary, where many endangered bird species find refuge. The crater can only be reached through organized tours, which typically depart from the ports of Maʻalaea or Kīhei.

Home to many rare fish species

Waihee Ridge Trail

This impressive hiking trail is located in the western part of Maui and offers one of the most beautiful panoramas of the island.

The moderately difficult, 4-kilometer trail ascends 300 meters to the ridge. After the initial steep section, the path winds along the Waihee Valley, offering constantly changing, breathtaking views of valleys, waterfalls, and the distant ocean. On clear days, the island of Molokai can be seen in the distance.

Along the path, the forest gradually changes, starting from drier, lower sections to the wet, humid forests of the higher regions. The highlight of the hike is the highest point of the ridge, where a 360-degree panorama opens up to the ocean and the West Maui Mountains. It’s advisable to start the hike in the early morning hours before clouds cover the peaks, though one should be prepared for rain as the area is famously wet.

One of the most beautiful views is from here

Pipiwai Trail

This scenic hiking trail is located in the Kīpahulu district of Haleakalā National Park.

During the 6.4-kilometer round trip, visitors pass through various ecosystems, including a bamboo forest where tall bamboo creates a dense canopy and a unique atmosphere. Along the trail, there are several smaller waterfalls and natural pools. The main attraction of the route is the magnificent Waimoku Falls, which marks the end point of the hike.

At the beginning of the trail, the Makahiku Falls offers an impressive sight, then the path continues along a stream where hikers must cross several small bridges. The ascent is gradual, making the hike feasible for most visitors.

Waimoku Falls

The impressive Waimoku Falls is located at the end of the Pipiwai Trail and is considered one of Maui’s most imposing natural attractions.

The 120-meter-high waterfall cascades down a black basalt rock face, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation. The path to the waterfall itself is a magical experience, as visitors pass through bamboo forests, cross bridges over streams, and see smaller waterfalls before reaching the main attractions. The natural pool formed under the waterfall is not suitable for swimming due to the force of the falling water and the rocks.

The best photos can be taken in the morning hours when the sun doesn’t directly illuminate the waterfall and the light is more even. It’s worth noting that the waterfall’s volume can vary significantly depending on the seasons and rainfall.

Hanawi Falls

This picturesque waterfall is located along the famous Hāna Highway.

The waterfall is found at the 32-mile marker and is relatively easy to access as it’s located right next to the road. It actually consists of two separate cascades flowing into a natural pool. The upper waterfall is about 9 meters high, while the lower one is somewhat shorter.

The pool beneath the waterfall is a popular bathing spot, although the water can often be quite cold. The best time to visit is in the morning hours when there are fewer tourists in the area and the light is also more favorable for photography.

Maui Ocean Center

One of the island’s most important attractions provides insight into Hawaii’s rich marine life.

The aquarium complex features more than 60 exhibition spaces, showcasing more than 2,000 fish and marine species living in the waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands. The facility’s pride is the Açores marine habitat, a massive 2.8-million-liter tank where sharks, rays, and other large marine creatures swim. A unique characteristic of the aquarium is that it exclusively exhibits Hawaiian species.

Visitors can learn about coral reef ecosystems through the Living Reef exhibition, then observe Hawaiian green sea turtles in the Turtle Lagoon. The center also features a special 3D projection room.

Napili Bay

This semicircular, golden sand bay is located on Maui’s northwestern coast and is one of the most popular beaches on the island.

The water in Napili Bay is generally calm and crystal clear, making it ideal for snorkeling and swimming. The rocky areas at both ends of the bay are home to colorful tropical fish and turtles.

The Kapalua Coastal Trail at the northern end of the bay is a beautiful path. It follows the coast for several kilometers and offers additional beautiful views of the bay.

Suitable for relaxed beaching

Honolua Bay

The bay is located on the northwestern coast of Maui and is known as one of the island’s premier snorkeling and surfing paradises.

This bay is a marine life conservation area of the state of Hawaii, which means that the aquatic wildlife is particularly rich and diverse. Swimming in the crystal-clear water, we find ourselves in the company of coral reefs, colorful tropical fish, and often sea turtles. The rocky area in the northern part of the bay is a particularly good place for snorkeling, where special rock formations and caves can also be found underwater.

In winter, the bay is a favorite spot for professional surfers, where world-class waves break on the shore. During this time, snorkeling is generally not recommended due to the strength of the waves. The best time to visit is during the summer months when the sea is calmer and ideal for water activities.

Makena Beach

This 1-kilometer-long golden sand beach is often called „Big Beach” and is one of Maui’s most beautiful natural beaches.

It is one of the least developed beaches on the island, which has preserved its natural beauty and wild character. The beach is bordered on one side by Puʻu Ōlaʻi, a 110-meter-high extinct volcanic cone, while the ocean stretches on the other side.

Perhaps the most beautiful beach in Hawaii

Kāʻanapali Beach

This white sand, 5-kilometer-long beach was once the resting place of Maui kings.

Located on the western coast, it offers a stunning view with its crystal-clear water and the Maui Mountains rising in the background. At the northern end of the beach is Black Rock (Puʻu Kekaʻa), a sacred place in Hawaiian culture, believed to be the point where souls cross over to the afterlife. Today, this spot is popular for cliff-diving demonstrations and is an excellent snorkeling location where sea turtles and colorful fish can often be seen.

Along the beach, luxury hotels, shopping centers, and restaurants line up to form the Whalers Village complex. Every evening at sunset, a torch-lighting ceremony is held at Black Rock, where a young Hawaiian man climbs the rock and, after throwing the torch into the water, dives into the sea with a spectacular header.

Maui weather: when is the best time to travel here?

Maui has a tropical climate that provides pleasant, warm weather year-round, although the climate can vary significantly in different parts of the island.

Spring (March-May):

Spring is an ideal time to visit Maui, when the weather is pleasant and tourist traffic is lower. The average temperature ranges between 21-29°C, and the amount of precipitation gradually decreases compared to the winter months. The waters are already warm enough for swimming and water sports, while in the mountains and valleys, the vegetation is particularly green and lush thanks to the winter rains.

Summer (June-September):

Summer in Maui is warm and mostly dry, especially on the western and southern coasts. The average temperature ranges between 23-32°C, but in the high parts of the island, such as the summit of Haleakalā, it can be significantly cooler. In July and August, there is hardly any rain along the coastline, although short showers remain common along Hāna and the northern coast. During the summer months, the ocean is calmer, which is ideal for snorkeling and swimming.

Fall (September-November):

Fall is similar to the spring period, with pleasant temperatures and lower tourist traffic. The average temperature ranges between 22-30°C, and although rainfall begins to increase in November, there are generally still many sunny, dry days. This period offers an excellent opportunity to travel at more favorable prices, while weather conditions are still ideal for most outdoor activities.

Winter (December-February):

Winter in Maui is slightly wetter but still pleasant, with average temperatures between 20-28°C. This is the migration period for humpback whales, when these impressive marine mammals can often be observed along the coast. The southern and western coasts generally remain drier, while showers are more frequent in the northern and eastern parts. Winter is the island’s busiest tourist season, especially around Christmas and New Year, when prices are also higher.

Best time to travel:

The most ideal period for visiting Maui is April-May and September-October, when the weather is pleasant, tourist traffic is lower, and the island’s natural beauties can be enjoyed in their full splendor. For whale watching, the period between December and March is best, while surfers find the biggest waves during the winter months.

Big Island is not only Hawaii’s but also the USA’s largest island, filled with breathtaking natural wonders, volcanoes, waterfalls, and magical beaches.

The „Big Island” or „The Island of Orchids” is the southernmost and largest island of the State of Hawaii in the United States. Along with Oahu, it is the most popular island.

Big Island attractions

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

The park, which is part of the World Heritage, is one of Hawaii’s most exciting and active natural attractions.

There are two active volcanoes in the national park: Kīlauea and Mauna Loa. Kīlauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, continuously shaping the island’s surface. In the park, visitors can observe volcanic activity, steaming fissures, and spectacular lava flows up close if the volcano is in an active period.

The park has more than 150 kilometers of hiking trails that cross various volcanic landscapes. Along the Crater Rim Drive route, there are numerous viewpoints offering breathtaking panoramas over the Halema’uma’u crater.

Mauna Kea

Rising more than 10,000 meters from the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, this mountain is one of the world’s most important astronomical centers.

The summit of Mauna Kea rises 4,207 meters above sea level, making it the highest point in Hawaii. At the top of the mountain is one of the most important observatory complexes, comprising 13 observatories. The extremely clear and pollution-free air, as well as the height above the clouds, create ideal conditions for astronomical observations.

One of the greatest experiences for visitors is stargazing after sunset at the Mauna Kea Visitor Center, located at an elevation of 2,800 meters. Here, they can participate in free telescope demonstrations and enjoy the breathtaking starry sky.

Akaka Falls State Park

Located on the eastern side of the island, the park is home to one of Hawaii’s highest and most spectacular waterfalls.

The Akaka Falls plunges 135 meters down a cliff covered with lush, tropical vegetation. An easily walkable, paved half-kilometer path leads to the waterfall, winding through the rainforest. Along the way, visitors can also admire a smaller waterfall, the 30-meter Kahuna Falls.

The park is characterized by lush vegetation: giant ferns, orchids, bamboo groves, and exotic flowers make the environment even more enchanting. It is especially spectacular in the early morning.

The biggest waterfall on the Big Island

Waipio Valley

One of Hawaii Island’s most sacred and breathtaking natural attractions is located on the northern shore of the Big Island.

The Waipio Valley, also known as the „Valley of Kings”, is about 1.6 kilometers wide and nearly 10 kilometers long, bordered on three sides by steep cliffs over 600 meters high. The valley was once home to thousands of native Hawaiians and served as an important center for spiritual and political life. Today, few people inhabit it, preserving its pristine beauty.

At the bottom of the valley, there are black sand beaches and crystal-clear rivers, while in the background, spectacular waterfalls cascade down vertical cliffs. The most famous among them is Hi’ilawe Falls, one of Hawaii’s highest waterfalls at over 400 meters. The road into the valley is extremely steep, so descending is recommended only by 4×4 vehicle or on foot, but the view from the lookout point is also breathtaking.

A key place in the island’s history

Pu’uhonua O Honaunau Historical Park

This sacred sanctuary is one of the most important monuments of Hawaiian culture and history, located on the western coast of the island.

Also known as the „Place of Refuge”, the area provided protection for centuries to those who broke the laws or were defeated in war. Priests performed ritual purification for those arriving at the sanctuary, after which they could leave as free people. The park features the Royal Grounds, where Hawaiian rulers lived, and the impressive Ki’i statues (tikis) nearly 3 meters tall that guard the sacred area.

The park’s unique atmosphere and historical significance make it a popular attraction. Visitors can gain insight into traditional Hawaiian lifestyle, view restored traditional huts, canoes, and the fish pond. Cultural demonstrations are frequently held at the site, where ancient craft techniques and traditions can be learned.

The main attractions of these sculptures

Nāhuku Lava Tube

One of the most unique formations in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, it is an underground volcanic lava tunnel.

The lava tube formed over more than 500 years when liquid lava flowed underground, gradually creating this cave system. The tunnel wall has a special pattern due to the flow traces of solidified lava and various mineral deposits. The lava stalactites hanging from the ceiling and the petrified memories of lava flows along the walls offer a spectacular sight.

Approximately 180 meters of the cave is visitable, with a pleasant temperature of 16-18 °C. At the entrance of the cave and its surroundings, ferns and native plants flourish, creating a curious contrast with the harsh, volcanic environment inside the cave.

Kīlauea Iki Trail

The hiking trail in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park crosses an extinct volcanic crater.

The former fire-breathing volcano last erupted in 1959, when hot molten rock shot up 580 meters high from its lava lake. Today, during the 6.4-kilometer circular trail, visitors can walk across the bottom of the crater, where the volcanic heat hidden deep in the earth can still be felt. The surface of the cracked lava plain still steams in places.

The path first runs along the rim of the crater, offering an unparalleled view of the caldera, then descends via a steep path to the crater floor.

The crater is still steaming today

ʻImiloa Astronomy Center

The science and cultural center in Hilo uniquely connects Hawaiian culture with modern astronomy.

The name of the institution means „discovery” or „seeking knowledge” which perfectly reflects its mission: to show how astronomy intertwines with the rich cultural heritage of native Hawaiians. The center’s modern planetarium holds impressive presentations about the Hawaiian sky and the Mauna Kea observatories, introducing the latest scientific discoveries in an interactive way.

In the exhibition space, visitors can learn about the Polynesian navigation methods that ancient Hawaiian sailors used to navigate the open ocean with the help of stars. They also present the cosmology of native Hawaiians and how they interpreted celestial phenomena.

James Cook Monument

The monument in Kealakekua Bay commemorates the place where the famous explorer, Captain James Cook, lost his life under tragic circumstances in 1779.

Captain Cook, who first mapped the Hawaiian Islands and named them the „Sandwich Islands” arrived at the shores of Hawaii during his third Pacific journey. Initially, the natives received him as a god, but later a conflict arose in which Captain Cook and several of his sailors were killed. The monument is a white obelisk standing on the shore of the bay and is considered both British and American territory.

The unique feature of the monument is that it can only be accessed by water, either by kayak or organized boat trips. In addition to its historical significance, the site has exceptional natural beauty, offering one of the most beautiful views along the Kona coast.

Hawaii Botanical Garden

Also known as the Garden of Eden, the botanical garden has one of the world’s most extraordinary collections of tropical plants.

The 17-hectare garden is situated on the slopes of the Kilauea volcano, above Onomea Bay, where the volcanic soil and abundant rainfall create ideal conditions for lush vegetation. The garden contains more than 2,000 different plant species, including rare palm varieties, orchids, bromeliads, and a rich collection of local native plants. A special feature of the garden is the world’s largest outdoor orchid collection.

Visitors can explore the garden via a network of walking paths that pass by waterfalls, streams, and viewpoints. One of the most spectacular parts is the Onomea Waterfall, whose rushing sound can be heard far into the dense vegetation.

Mauna Kea Cacao

This special cocoa plantation produces world-class chocolate ingredients thanks to Hawaii’s unique microclimate and volcanic soil.

The mineral-rich composition of the volcanic soil and the precipitation coming from the sea give a unique flavor to the cocoa beans grown here. The plantation managers are committed to sustainable farming and grow their plants using strictly organic methods.

Regular tours are organized for visitors, where they can learn about the entire process of cocoa growing and chocolate making, from plant care through fermentation to handmade chocolate production. The highlight of the tour is, of course, the tasting, where premium chocolates made with different aging and roasting techniques can be sampled. Visitors can also purchase unique, handcrafted chocolate products at the plantation’s small shop.

Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation

One of Hawaii’s most famous and highest coffee plantations is the home of the famous Kona coffee.

The plantation, located on the slopes of the Hualalai volcano at nearly 1,000 meters high, provides ideal conditions for producing exceptional quality coffee. The altitude, volcanic soil, morning sunshine, and afternoon cloud cover all contribute to the distinctive, rich flavor profile of Kona coffee.

Visitors can participate in free tours to learn about the entire coffee production process from bush to cup. At the end of the tour, they can, of course, taste freshly roasted coffee specialties.

Rainbow Falls

The waterfall near Hilo is one of the Big Island’s most beautiful attractions.

The waterfall on the Wailuku River got its name – Waianiwaniwa, which means rainbow in Hawaiian – because rainbows often appear in the spray of the falling water in the sunshine. The waterfall drops 24 meters into a natural pool carved by the river into the volcanic rock. The surrounding area is covered with lush rainforest, which is home to numerous native plant and animal species.

The path to the waterfall is of moderate difficulty and leads through wonderful landscapes. During the hike, we pass through bamboo groves, flowering gingers, and huge banana trees. Although the pool is tantalizingly inviting, swimming is not recommended due to the dangerous current and rocks hidden under the water.

A rainbow forms in the pool

Umauma Falls

This three-tiered waterfall is one of the Big Island’s most spectacular natural attractions.

The water of the Umauma River is carried down by three consecutive, stepped waterfalls over more than 90 meters. The combined view of the waterfalls is breathtaking, especially from the upper viewpoint, from which all three cascades can be admired at once. Natural pools have formed between the cascades, in which – following the park’s rules – swimming is allowed during certain periods.

The Umauma Experience park surrounding the waterfall offers numerous adventure opportunities for visitors. The braver ones can glide over the waterfall using the 9-line zipline system.

Kealakekua Bay

The bay is known not only for its historical significance but is also considered one of Hawaii’s best diving locations.

The crystal-clear water in the horseshoe-shaped bay often has visibility exceeding 30 meters, providing an exceptional opportunity to explore the underwater world. The coral reef not far from the bay’s shore is home to more than 200 fish species, including rare and endemic species. Divers and snorkelers can swim alongside colorful tropical fish, sea turtles, and occasionally even dolphins.

The site can be accessed by kayak, organized boat tours, or via a steep path leading down from the viewpoint above the bay to the shore.

Punaluʻu Beach

One of Hawaii’s most iconic and unique beaches is known for its black sand.

The beach owes its existence to volcanic activity: when hot lava flows into the sea, it fragments into tiny black sand particles due to sudden cooling.

One of its most special attractions is the presence of green sea turtles, known in Hawaiian as honu, which often rest on the black sand.

Hāpuna Beach

This sandy paradise on the western coast of the Big Island regularly appears on the list of America’s most beautiful beaches.

The nearly half-mile-long, wide white sandy beach boasts crystal-clear turquoise water. The shallow coastal waters are ideal for swimming and sunbathing, while the rock walls at both ends of the beach provide excellent snorkeling opportunities.

In winter, the height of the waves can increase significantly, making the beach popular with surfers, but swimming can become dangerous for the inexperienced. In summer and autumn, however, the sea is generally calm, providing perfect conditions for family beach activities.

One of the most beautiful beaches on the island

Papakōlea Beach

The unique green sand beach is among only four beaches in the world where such special colored sand can be found.

The beach gets its green color from the olivine mineral, which is a volcanic crystal. This mineral comes from the crater of the nearby Pu’u Mahana volcano, located at the southern tip of the island. The emerald green shade of the sand is particularly spectacular in sunshine when the crystalline material glitters vividly.

Accessing the beach is adventurous: a nearly five-kilometer hiking trail leads from the South Point parking lot to the seaside. This path can only be traveled on foot or by off-road vehicle, although off-road driving is not officially permitted. The beach forms a crescent-shaped bay surrounded by steep cliffs. Swimming is not recommended here due to strong currents and wave breaks.

‘Anaeho’omalu Beach

Known by locals simply as „A-Bay”, the beach lies in a beautiful bay on the Kohala coast, with a white sandy shoreline lined with palm trees and interspersed with black lava rock segments.

The beach’s specialty is the two ancient fish ponds along the shore, which are remnants of traditional Hawaiian fish farming. These ponds are connected to the sea through underground channels and once provided fresh fish for the ruling elite. Today, walking around the ponds, native water birds and sometimes sea turtles can be observed.

The water here is relatively calm, often ideal for paddleboarding and kayaking. The beach is also famous for its sunsets.

Kaunaoa Beach (Mauna Kea Beach)

This crescent-shaped, white sandy beach is one of the most exclusive and beautiful stretches of the Kohala coast.

The beach was originally designed for guests of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, and even today, a limited number of parking spaces are provided for the public. The gently sloping sandy beach and shallow, turquoise water provide perfect conditions for swimming and sunbathing.

A special feature of the beach is that in the evenings, the hotel turns on lights in the water that attract plankton, making the bay a feeding ground for manta rays. Thus, lucky visitors can observe these graceful giants.

Hawaii Big Island weather: when is the best time to travel here?

The climate of Hawaii’s Big Island is extremely varied, thanks to the different elevations and the size of the island. As many as 8 different microclimates can be experienced within a single day.

Spring (March-May):

The spring period is pleasantly warm, with less rain than during the winter months. The average temperature on the coasts ranges between 21-27°C, while in the mountainous areas, it can be significantly cooler. The sea temperature is pleasant, averaging around 24°C. In April, the Merrie Monarch Festival, the world’s most significant hula competition, attracts visitors.

Summer (June-September):

The summer period is warm and dry, especially on the western, Kona side of the island. The daytime temperature on the beach ranges between 27-32°C, but on high mountains, such as the summit of Mauna Kea, it can drop below freezing at night. Summer is also a time for celebrating Hawaiian culture, with numerous festivals and outdoor events.

Autumn (September-November):

Autumn is a transitional period when the temperature gradually decreases but still remains pleasant. Temperatures of 24-29°C can be expected on the coasts. This period is ideal for hiking and exploring volcanoes, as there are fewer tourists and prices may be more favorable. In October, the Ironman World Championship is held in Kailua-Kona.

Winter (December-February):

Winter is the island’s „rainy season,” especially on the eastern, Hilo side, where significant amounts of precipitation can fall. However, the temperature remains pleasant on the coasts, ranging between 20-26°C. The peaks of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa may occasionally be covered with snow, creating a peculiar contrast with the tropical coastal environment.

Best time to travel:

The most ideal time to visit Hawaii’s Big Island is late spring and early autumn (April-May and September-October), when the weather is pleasant, tourist traffic is lower, and most outdoor activities can be enjoyed without hindrance.

Kauai is Hawaii’s oldest and perhaps most picturesque island, dazzling visitors with its stunning natural wonders and breathtaking landscapes.

Often called „The Garden of Hawaii”, Kauai is the oldest island in the Hawaiian archipelago, home to diverse landscapes and stunning natural attractions. The island is famous for its lush rainforests, breathtaking waterfalls, and dramatic coastlines.

Kauai attractions

Waimea Canyon

Known as the „Grand Canyon of the Pacific”, this canyon is one of Kauai’s most impressive natural sights and one of the world’s most beautiful gorges.

The nearly 14-mile long and more than 3,000-foot deep canyon was formed over millions of years by the erosion of the Waimea River and the enormous rainfall of Mount Wai’ale’ale. Its reddish-orange walls, deep ravines, and terraced structure create an amazing sight. At the bottom of the canyon, crystal-clear streams and smaller waterfalls make the view even more spectacular.

The canyon offers numerous lookout points with breathtaking panoramic views of the valley and surrounding mountains. The most famous is the Waimea Canyon Lookout, but it’s also worth visiting the lookouts near Puu Hinahina and Koke’e Lodge.

Nā Pali Coast

This breathtaking 17-mile stretch of Kauai’s northern shore is one of the world’s most enchanting and steepest coastlines. It can only be accessed by foot, boat, or helicopter.

Its steep, emerald-green cliffs dramatically rise from the turquoise ocean, in places reaching heights of several hundred meters. The vertical cliff faces are interrupted by narrow valleys and hidden beaches. The unique geological formations of the coastline formed over millions of years through the combined effects of volcanic activity and erosion.

In the valleys along the coast, there were once ancient Hawaiian settlements, traces of which – terraced agricultural areas and sacred sites – can still be discovered today. The area has rich biodiversity: it’s home to rare plants, bird species, and marine life.

One of the most adventurous ways to explore the coastline is by boat or kayak tour, during which visitors can discover caves and waterfalls. Dolphins and turtles are often encountered.

Kalalau Trail

One of the world’s most beautiful and also most dangerous hiking routes runs along the Nā Pali Coast, offering breathtaking views.

The 11-mile trail was used by ancient Hawaiians to reach the Kalalau Valley and its isolated beaches. The hike starts at Ke’e Beach and ends at Kalalau Beach, passing through numerous smaller valleys, streams, and steep cliffs. During the journey, hikers pass through various microclimates: from humid rainforests to rocky hillsides to tropical shores.

The difficulty level of the hike is exceptional; in several sections, hikers must navigate narrow, slippery paths and steep cliff faces, with drops of several hundred meters below. The most dangerous part of the route is the section called „Crawler’s Ledge” where the footpath is only a few centimeters wide and runs along the side of the cliff. A permit is required for the full trail, and at least one night must be spent in the wilderness, but the first two miles – leading to Hanakapi’ai Beach – can be hiked without a permit.

Worth a hike

Lihue

The island’s capital and commercial center is located on the eastern shore.

Lihue’s history is tied to the golden age of sugarcane cultivation when the city served as the economic engine of the island. Traces of this heritage can still be discovered at the Grove Farm Homestead Museum, a carefully restored plantation residence.

In the city center is the historic Kauai Museum, which showcases the island’s rich cultural heritage, from ancient Hawaiian civilization to the influences of Polynesian, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, and Portuguese immigrants. The museum’s special collection consists of old photographs, traditional crafts, and artistic creations.

One of its most beautiful attractions is Kalapaki Beach, a crescent-shaped, protected bay ideal for swimming, beginner surfing, and sunbathing.

Wailua Falls

One of the highest and most spectacular natural wonders of eastern Kauai plunges 173 feet into a deep, emerald-green pool.

The waterfall is located along the Wailua River, Kauai’s only navigable river. To approach the waterfall, you must hike a beautiful 2-mile trail that leads through dense rainforest. Along the path, hikers encounter diverse tropical vegetation, birdsong, and seasonal smaller waterways.

When visitors reach the waterfall, an amazing sight awaits them: a huge mass of water crashes with a thunderous roar into the crystal-clear pool, surrounded by lush vegetation and vertical rock walls. The braver visitors can swim in the pool. The waterfall is particularly impressive after rainy periods when the water volume increases, and the cascade can be seen in its full glory.

Opaeka’a Falls

One of Kauai’s most easily accessible and yet most beautiful natural attractions, located along a tributary of the Wailua River.

The name of the waterfall in Hawaiian means „rolling shrimp”, referring to the shrimp that were once abundant in the pool below the waterfall. The nearly 150-foot high waterfall cascades down in two branches over a cliff covered with dense, green vegetation and has abundant water flow year-round. The landscape surrounding the waterfall is impressive: lush mountains, dense forests, and the valley of the Wailua River.

The specialty of the waterfall is that it can be viewed from a comfortable lookout point, easily accessible by car along Kuamoo Road (Highway 580). From the lookout point, there is not only an unparalleled view of the waterfall but also of the Wailua River valley and the distant mountains.

Koke’e State Park

A magical nature reserve in western Kauai, offering numerous hiking trails, breathtaking viewpoints, and a unique ecosystem.

The park, covering more than 10,000 acres, is located adjacent to Waimea Canyon and features diverse habitats: from wet mountain forests to drier plateaus. One of the park’s most special plants is the koa tree, native only to the Hawaiian Islands. Besides the native flora, many rare bird species can be observed here, such as the endangered akikiki or the puaiohi.

At the center of the park is the Koke’e Natural History Museum, which presents the area’s history, geology, and biodiversity through interactive exhibitions.

The park has more than 45 miles of hiking trails of varying difficulty levels: from easy walks to challenging, full-day hikes. The park’s most famous lookout points, Kalalau Lookout and Puu O Kila Lookout, offer magnificent panoramic views of the Nā Pali Coast.

Kalalau Lookout

One of Kauai’s most breathtaking viewpoints offers an incredible panorama from an elevation of 4,000 feet of the Kalalau Valley, the cliffs of the Nā Pali Coast, and the Pacific Ocean.

The lookout is located in Koke’e State Park and is relatively easily accessible by paved road. From the viewpoint, visitors can look into the Kalalau Valley, which was home to ancient Hawaiians and which today can only be accessed on foot or by boat. The steep walls of the valley are covered with dense forest, and when the clouds lift, the ocean undulating at the bottom of the valley provides a breathtaking sight.

Spouting Horn

One of the most spectacular natural wonders of Kauai’s southern coast is a special geyser-like phenomenon that has become one of the most photographed locations on the island.

The phenomenon occurs at a lava rock where waves are forced into an underground lava tube, and due to pressure, can shoot up to 50 feet high through a small opening. The water jet becomes particularly impressive during strong waves and is often accompanied by a characteristic hissing, whistling sound. According to Hawaiian legends, the whistling is the voice of Kaikapu, a mighty lizard that a young warrior, Liko, trapped in this lava tube.

The park developed around the Spouting Horn allows observation of the phenomenon from a safe distance. The area is especially popular at sunset.

Fern Grotto

One of Kauai’s most romantic and mystical locations is a cave-like recess covered with ferns along the Wailua River. It was once accessible only to the Hawaiian royal family.

The natural formation was created by thousands of years of erosion by the river, and its walls are densely covered with various ferns, mosses, and other tropical plants. The cave has special acoustics, which has made it a popular venue for weddings and musical performances for a long time.

The cave can only be reached by water, usually as part of an organized tour. On the boat trip upstream, participants learn about local history, flora and fauna, and Hawaiian culture.

Near the Fern Grotto is also Secret Falls (Uluwehi Falls). It’s accessible after a short kayak trip and hike, leading to a beautiful smaller waterfall and natural pool.

The cave is a popular place

Allerton Garden

Located in southern Kauai, it’s known as one of the world’s most beautiful and unique tropical gardens.

The garden was developed in the 1930s by Robert Allerton and his adopted son, John Gregg Allerton, on a former royal estate. The 200-acre area was carefully designed into „garden rooms” separated by hedges, walls, and natural boundaries. The garden has numerous special spaces: there’s a bamboo forest, tropical fruit orchard, waterfront garden, and an impressive Moreton Bay fig tree avenue.

Perhaps the most famous parts of the garden are the giant fig trees, whose enormous aerial roots give the area an almost otherworldly atmosphere – it’s no coincidence that scenes from „Jurassic Park” were filmed here.

The garden is significant not only from a botanical perspective but also represents artistic value: antique statues, fountains, and carefully designed water features make the visit even more attractive. The garden can only be visited as part of a guided tour, during which visitors learn about the history of the garden, the origin and significance of the plants, and the challenges of design and maintenance.

Hanalei Bay

The crescent-shaped Hanalei Bay is one of the most iconic and picturesque locations on Kauai’s northern coast, characterized by lush, green mountains, crystal-clear water, and golden sand beaches.

The town of Hanalei, situated on the bay’s shore, is a charming, laid-back settlement that has preserved its authentic Hawaiian character. In the historical center of the town is the more than 100-year-old Wai’oli Hui’ia Church, whose distinctive green tower and colorful stained glass windows represent unique architectural value.

The bay’s beach is ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and surfing, especially during the summer months when the sea is calmer. The more adventurous can explore the mouth of the Hanalei River and the coastal mangrove swamps, which are home to rich birdlife, by kayak. The location has appeared in numerous films, including „South Pacific” and „The Perfect Storm”. One of the most beautiful views of the bay can be enjoyed from the Hanalei Lookout, located along Highway 56.

Poipu Beach

Often mentioned as one of Hawaii’s most beautiful and safest beaches, it provides an ideal location for families and water sports enthusiasts alike.

The beach actually encompasses two sandy bays separated by a narrow strip of land, Nukumoi Point. The eastern bay is quieter, has shallower water, and is ideal for families with small children, while the deeper water of the western section offers opportunities for more experienced swimmers and divers. The beach is protected by coral reefs, which reduce the force of the waves while offering excellent opportunities for snorkeling and observing colorful tropical fish.

One of the special features of Poipu Beach is that Hawaiian monk seals are often seen resting on the shore, as well as sea turtles grazing in the shallow water. Snorkeling along the coral reef adjacent to the beach, visitors can observe up to 35 different species of fish, including Hawaii’s state fish, the Humuhumunukunukuapua’a.

Ke’e Beach

The endpoint of Kauai’s northern shore, an idyllic sandy beach section. This is where the land meets the legendary Nā Pali Coast, and where the famous Kalalau Trail begins.

The crescent-shaped bay of the beach is protected from larger waves, making it ideal for swimming and snorkeling during the summer months when the sea is calmer. Underwater, there is an extensive coral reef that is home to colorful tropical fish, turtles, and other marine life.

Ke’e Beach is also culturally significant: nearby is Nāula, an ancient Hawaiian cultural site that once served for the training of priests. Sunset from the beach is a particularly wonderful sight.

Hanakapi’ai Beach

A remote, pristine beach section in northern Kauai that can only be reached on foot via the first section of the Kalalau Trail.

The hike to the beach starts from Ke’e Beach and is about 2 miles long, over terrain of moderate difficulty. The path runs along the stunning Nā Pali Coast, so hikers can enjoy breathtaking views along the way. During the hike, visitors also cross the Hanakapi’ai River, which can swell significantly during the rainy season, sometimes making crossing a challenge.

The special beauty of the beach comes from the surrounding steep, green cliffs and the massive waves arriving at the shore. It’s important to know that due to strong currents and dangerous waves, Hanakapi’ai Beach is not suitable for swimming – several fatal accidents have occurred here. Visiting the beach is more about experiencing the pristine beauty and power of nature.

The impressive Hanakapi’ai Falls is located 2 miles further from the beach. This is a 300-foot high cascade that pours into a crystal-clear pool.

Kauai weather: when is the best time to visit?

Kauai has a tropical climate that provides pleasant temperatures year-round, yet there are significant differences in rainfall between seasons and different areas of the island.

Spring (March-May):

Spring is a pleasant time on Kauai, with moderate temperatures and gradually decreasing precipitation. The average temperature ranges between 72-81°F, and although showers occur, they are generally shorter than during the winter period. April and May are already drier months, ideal for beach activities and hiking. During the spring season, the island’s vegetation is particularly lush and flowering, thanks to the winter rains.

Summer (June-September):

Summer in Kauai is warm and relatively dry, especially in the southern and western areas. The average temperature ranges between 75-86°F, and the amount of rainfall decreases significantly. This period is ideal for beach activities, as the sea is calmer and clearer. During the summer months, showers are also less frequent in the northern part of the island, making this the best time to explore the Nā Pali Coast and the Kalalau Trail.

Fall (September-November):

Fall is one of the most pleasant seasons on Kauai, when temperatures are still summery (73-84°F), but there are fewer tourists. The weather generally remains dry during September and October, but the rainier season may begin in November. This period can be ideal for those who want to avoid crowds but still enjoy good weather. The ocean temperature also remains pleasant, so water sports can still be practiced.

Winter (December-February):

Winter in Kauai means the rainy season, especially in the northern and eastern parts of the island, where Mount Waialeale is one of the rainiest places on Earth. The average temperature ranges between 70-79°F, so it’s still pleasant, but frequent showers may limit outdoor activities. The sea’s waves are also stronger during this period, especially on the northern shore, which is good for surfers but can make beach activities more dangerous.

Best time to travel:

The most ideal time to visit Kauai is the late spring (April-May) and summer (June-September), when the weather is drier and sunnier, ideal for exploring the island’s natural beauties and for water activities. If someone wants to explore the Nā Pali Coast, it’s best to visit during the summer months when the sea is calmer, and the hiking trails are drier.

Oahu is one of Hawaii’s most popular tourist destinations, with famous spots like Honolulu and Waikiki Beach.

Oahu is the third largest island in the USA of Hawaii. The 1,557-square-kilometer island was formed approximately two and a half to three million years ago after a volcanic eruption. Next to Big Island, it is the most popular island.

For those who enjoy bustling activity and don’t mind slightly crowded areas, Oahu is a perfect choice. It has the most well-developed infrastructure of all Hawaiian islands. Excellent beaches and hiking opportunities await visitors.

Oahu attractions

Honolulu

Hawaii’s capital and therefore the most popular vacation spot. Most tourists arrive here.

Its most famous part is Waikiki Beach, which is world-renowned. The beach section itself is only 500 meters long, so it’s often crowded. The beach is lined with luxury hotels, and along Kalakaua Avenue in front, you’ll find shops and luxury stores.

Magic Island Lagoon is a peninsula extending into the sea with a „pool”. Ala Moana Beach’s sandy shore is a great place to relax with beautiful panoramic views.

The Honolulu Museum of Art is located downtown. It houses nearly 50,000 artifacts, about half of which are connected to Asian culture. Of course, you can find Hawaiian artists’ works from the 1700s, as well as 19th-century European artworks (e.g., Van Gogh, Rodin, Monet).

The Iolani Palace is an impressive classical building built in the 19th century as a royal residence. It’s the only royal palace in the US territory and now functions as a museum.

Pearl Harbor

Located in the outskirts of Honolulu, it’s interesting not just for military enthusiasts. It’s a must-see among Oahu attractions!

On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked the military base, destroying two-thirds of the American fleet. This attack resulted in the US entering World War II.

Its biggest attraction is the USS Missouri battleship. The USS Missouri (BB 63) was a legendary battleship of the US Navy, participating in numerous battles during World War II. On September 2, 1945, Japan’s surrender was signed on this ship’s deck. It participated in the Korean War and the 1991 Gulf War. It was retired in 1995 and has been operating as a museum since 1998.

Another main attraction is the USS Arizona National Memorial. Built over the wreckage of the USS Arizona battleship, this memorial commemorates the 1,777 sailors who lost their lives here on December 7, 1941. The massive ship was swallowed by the waves in just nine minutes.

The Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum‘s two hangars display various aircraft, and videos and historical photographs showcase the past.

The USS Bowfin Submarine Museum can be viewed at the visitor center (before the bridge to the island). It patrolled between Indonesia and Japan during World War II and sank 15 merchant ships and a frigate. It has been a state memorial since 1986.

Diamond Head State Monument

This volcanic crater rises at the southeastern part of Honolulu. It offers the best photos of Honolulu and the long beach area.

Known locally as Leahi, it was formed about 300,000 years ago during a volcanic eruption. The crater is nearly 1 kilometer in diameter and 230 meters high. A military base operated here in the 20th century, and its remains are still visible today.

The Diamond Head trail is one of the most popular on Oahu, leading to the crater’s rim. The approximately 1.3 km long route is moderately difficult, so it’s safe to attempt. The views are amazing even during the hike.

The view from the edge of the crater is fantastic

Shangri La Museum (Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design)

This small museum is located at the southeastern foot of Diamond Head, on the beach. It’s worth visiting for those interested in Islamic culture.

The collection consists mainly of ceramic art, particularly tile works and medieval Persian creations. Notable are the works created by Moroccan, Indian, and Iranian artists in the 1930s.

Lyon Arboretum and Manoa Falls

Several hiking trails start into the lush forest area a few kilometers from Honolulu. Among these, the Manoa Falls Trail is perhaps the most beautiful.

You can drive to Lyon Arboretum, where you can see many species of plants and animals. It contains more than 5,000 tropical plants from Hawaii and Polynesia.

From here, about a 1 km walk takes you to Manoa Falls. You can swim in the pool at the bottom of the 150-meter waterfall.

You can also swim in the lake

Hanauma Bay

On the southeastern part of Oahu, this unique natural bay formed in an ancient volcanic crater.

It’s in a beautiful environment and perfect for snorkeling and diving due to its rich marine life. Besides numerous fish species, it’s an important habitat for green sea turtles, which visitors often see.

Since the bay is heavily protected, visitors must attend a short education session before entering. There are no refreshment stands on the beach; you can only shop in the parking lot.

One of Hawaii’s most beautiful bays, perfect for snorkelling and diving

Koko Crater Railway Trailhead

This is a hiking trail where railway ties serve as steps, with most of the track still in place.

During World War II, a military tram operated here, as there were bunkers at the summit. Supplies were transported on this.

Although it’s only 1.2 km long, you need to climb stairs made of 1,050 railway ties, so some endurance is needed! However, the summit offers beautiful panoramic views.

You can walk up on rails

Lanikai Beach

Located in southern Kailua, many consider this Oahu’s most beautiful beach.

This is the beach people come to Hawaii for: azure water and dazzling fine sand. Plus, the wind is lighter here, so waves are smaller than at other Hawaiian beaches.

Lanikai Beach is considered the most beautiful beach

Polynesian Cultural Center

Located in the coastal town of Laie below the northern „tip”, this park was founded by the Mormon church.

The experience center spans over 42 hectares and aims to introduce visitors to the traditions, history, and culture of various Polynesian islands (e.g., Hawaii, Fiji, Tahiti, Samoa, Tonga, and New Zealand).

It consists of seven different „villages”, each showcasing a Polynesian archipelago. One of its best performances is Hā Breath of Life, a Polynesian music and dance show.

Valley of the Temples

A memorial park located near the city of Kāneʻohe at the foot of the Koʻolau Mountains.

Its most famous building is the Byodo Temple complex, a replica of an ancient Japanese Buddhist temple. It’s surrounded by lotus flowers, koi ponds, and beautiful Japanese-style gardens. The temple houses a huge golden Buddha statue sitting in meditation position.

Additionally, the grounds contain statues of Catholic saints, crypts, and mausoleums of notable Hawaiian people.

It’s an extremely challenging hiking trail in an impressive environment, with a total of 4,000 steps leading up to the 850-meter high Puu Keahi a Kahoe peak and winding back to sea level.

Weather

The Hawaiian Islands have a pleasant tropical climate. There are two seasons: the dry season from May to October, and the rainy season from October to April.

The Pacific Ocean has a moderating effect on the islands’ annual average temperature. The winter average temperature is around 22-24°C, while the summer average temperature is usually above 28°C.

Rainfall distribution is affected by the location of the islands’ high mountains and the northeastern direction of the Pacific trade winds. The western and southern sides of the islands are wind-sheltered, with annual rainfall of 500-1000mm. Rain can freely reach the northern and eastern sides, where annual rainfall is 3000-4000mm.
