Most visitors spend one or two nights in Ranomafana to observe wildlife on both dawn and evening walks. The small town of Ranomafana, located at the park entrance, is also known for its thermal baths, where locals and tourists alike relax in the warm pools. Masoala National Park

Madagascar’s largest protected area and one of the island’s most remote natural wonders is located in the northern part of the country, on the Masoala Peninsula.

Andasibe-Mantadia National Park

One of the most visited and most easily accessible national parks in Madagascar, just 140 kilometres east of the capital.

It consists of two parts: the smaller, more accessible Analamazaotra Reserve and the much larger, wilder Mantadia section. The park’s lower montane rainforests attract ecotourists year-round thanks to their mild climate and rich fauna.

Its greatest stars are the indri lemurs, the largest living lemur species in the world. In the mornings, the indri greet the day with their deep, melodic, far-carrying song. Visitors walking the trails through the park may also encounter many other lemur species, such as the diademed sifaka or the striking black-and-white ruffed lemur. The park is also botanically rich: orchids, pitcher plants, and various ferns enliven the forest.

Local guides available in the nearby villages have an excellent knowledge of the park and can often locate well-hidden chameleons, tenrecs, and nocturnal lemurs during lantern-lit walks. Ambohimanga Royal Hill

Meaning “Blue Hill” in Malagasy, this is the most important and sacred historical site in the country, just 24 kilometres north of the capital.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the hill was the spiritual and political centre of the former Merina Kingdom and remains an active religious pilgrimage site to this day. The small town clustered around the fortified walls is filled with a special, almost intangible sense of reverence and a drift into the past.

At the top of the hill, the palaces, ritual huts, and baths of 18th-century Merina kings and queens have survived in a state close to their original form. The entrance to the seven-gated fortress was sealed each night by enormous stone discs. A single central post supported the entire structure of the palace – an architectural feat unique on the island and throughout the entire Indian Ocean region.

Walking around the fortress, visitors can study the way of life of the Malagasy kingdom up close: the ancient furniture, ritual objects, and paintings paint a vivid picture of everyday life among the Merina aristocracy. From the top of the hill, there is a magnificent view over the green-clad mountains and, in the distance, the rooftops of the capital.

Antananarivo

Affectionately known as “Tana”, Madagascar’s vibrant, hillside capital is a place where the old and new worlds exist side by side.

Spread across the rolling hills of the central Madagascar plateau, the city is home to more than 3 million people. It is visually striking too: white and ochre-toned buildings line the steep mountain streets.

At the heart of the upper city, the Haute-Ville, stands the Rova, the former royal palace fortress, which offers a panoramic view over the entire capital. The Zoma market was once one of the world’s largest open-air markets; today the local grey and orange market halls bustle with traders, spices, handicrafts, and fresh fruit. Ifaty

A sleepy fishing village on the shores of the Mozambique Channel, just 27 kilometres north of Toliara, which has grown into one of the most popular coastal destinations on Madagascar’s southern coast. A few kilometres from the shore lies the Reniala Nature Reserve, where enormous ancient baobab trees form the characteristic landscape of southern Madagascar. The waters around Ifaty are among the best diving networks in the country: the coral reefs conceal sea turtles, grouper, and sea rays. During whale season, from July to September, boat-based whale-watching excursions depart from the shore.

Avenue of the Baobabs

Perhaps Madagascar’s most iconic location, not far from the town of Morondava in the western part of the country.

Centuries-old baobab trees, some reaching 25 to 30 metres in height, line both sides of a dirt road and offer a breathtaking spectacle in the light of the rising or setting sun. These giant, corkscrew-trunked trees are remnants of ancient rainforests, gradually surrounded over the centuries by agricultural land.

Nosy Be

Meaning “Big Island” in Malagasy, Nosy Be is Madagascar’s best-known and most popular beach resort, lying just a few kilometres from the northern tip of the country in the Indian Ocean. The scent of the island’s cultivated ylang-ylang blossoms is noticeable everywhere, which is why it earned the nickname the Island of Flowers.

Among the island’s most famous beaches are Andilana Beach and Ambatoloaka, where white sand and turquoise water await visitors. The nearby smaller islands – Nosy Komba, Nosy Tanikely, and Nosy Sakatia – are all perfect day-trip destinations: their deep blue waters are ideal for diving and snorkelling, turtle and shark watching is organised along the shores, and the jungles are home to the tiny black lemur.

Tsingy de Bemaraha

Madagascar’s most astounding natural spectacle, and one of the world’s most extraordinary limestone formation systems.

Located in the Melaky region in the western part of the country, this UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site is made up of razor-sharp limestone needles, chasms, and dizzying rock formations that combine into a landscape reminiscent of another planet. The word tsingy means “where one cannot walk barefoot” in Malagasy.

The park offers two types of landscape: the Grand Tsingy and the Petit Tsingy, both equally impressive but offering hiking of different levels of difficulty. Hidden in the crevices and valleys between the rocks, enclosed ecosystems have developed, home to endemic plant and animal species, including rare lemurs, chameleons, and birds found nowhere else on Earth. The trails running across zip lines and suspension bridges offer a true adventure hike.

Getting there is an adventure in itself: during the rainy season, the muddy roads are almost impassable, so most visitors come during the dry season, from June to November. Isalo National Park

Madagascar’s “Grand Canyon” lies in the south-central part of the island in the Fianarantsoa region, and is among the country’s most spectacular and most visited parks, thanks to its red erosion-sculpted sandstone cliffs, canyon systems, and natural pools. The unique, almost Martian landscape is revered by the Sakalava people as the home of their ancestors, and numerous rock niches conceal ancient burial sites deep within the sandstone walls.

The park’s pride is its series of natural cold and warm water pools, which tumble through the canyons in beautiful waterfalls and emerald green oases. The Cascade des Nymphes and the Piscine Naturelle are particularly well known: their crystal-clear waters offer a refreshing dip during the heat of the day.

The Door to Hell

When Soviet geologists’ drilling caused the ground to collapse, they ignited the escaping natural gas to prevent toxic gases from spreading. The sight is truly magical at night, when flames rising from the massive crater bathe the desert in orange light. Ashgabat

Turkmenistan’s capital and largest city, located at the foot of the Kopet Dag mountains, on the edge of the desert.

In the 12th century, it was the world’s largest city, with more than 200,000 inhabitants. The ruins cover a vast area of nearly 1,200 hectares and encompass five different urban centers from various historical periods. The Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar is a masterpiece of Seljuk architecture, with its double-walled dome structure that was centuries ahead of its time. Archaeological excavations continuously bring new finds to the surface, revealing Merv’s rich past.

Kunya-Urgench

This ancient city in northern Turkmenistan is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Kunya-Urgench flourished from the 10th to 14th centuries, when it was the capital of the Khwarezm Empire and one of the most significant trading centers on the Silk Road. The Mongol conquest severely damaged it, but its surviving monuments are gems of Islamic architecture. The 62-meter-high Kutlug Timur minaret is Central Asia’s tallest medieval tower.

The Turabek Khanum mausoleum features a stunning mosaic-decorated dome covered with turquoise, blue, and white tiles. Karakum Desert

One of Central Asia’s largest deserts, covering more than 70% of Turkmenistan’s territory, nearly 350,000 square kilometers.

The name Karakum means „black sand,” although it is actually characterized by golden-yellow and reddish-colored dunes. The desert doesn’t consist of simple sand seas but offers varied landscapes: massive sand dunes, saline plains, steppe areas, and oases alternate. The Karakum Canal, one of the world’s longest irrigation canals, crosses it, channeling water from the Amu Darya River.

The desert’s unique wildlife has adapted to extreme conditions. The rare Turkmen wild ass, desert monitor lizard, and numerous snake species live here. Desert vegetation, especially saxaul shrubs, can survive with their deeply penetrating roots. Nomadic shepherd families’ yurts can still be found on the desert’s edge, where we can gain insight into traditional Turkmen lifestyle.

Kopet Dag Mountains

An imposing mountain range running along the Turkmen-Iranian border, creating a dramatic contrast with the desert plains.

The range’s highest point is the 3,139-meter Ayrybaba peak. The name means „Dry Mountains”, referring to the range’s inhospitable, rocky character. The mountains’ northern slopes rise steeply above Ashgabat, often shrouded in fog, while the southern side gradually descends to the Iranian plateau.

The Kopet Dag Nature Reserve has important ecological significance due to its rich flora and fauna. More than 700 plant species are found in the mountains, including many endemic ones. The Central Asian leopard lives here, though rarely seen, as well as mountain goats, argali sheep, and various birds of prey. The range has numerous natural springs and hidden valleys that form oases. According to Turkmen tradition, the mountains conceal numerous ancient fortresses and caves that have provided shelter over millennia.

Turkmenbashi

Turkmenistan’s largest port city on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea, formerly known as Krasnovodsk.

The city is strategically significant for Turkmenistan, as it is the country’s only maritime gateway to the outside world. Registan Square

Built between 1619 and 1636 on the order of Governor Jalangtuš Bahadur, as a counterpart to the Ulugbek Madrasah. The name means „bearing lions”, referring to the unique mosaic image on the building’s facade: two lions or tigers chase a deer while carrying a stylized sun on their backs.

This animal-depicting decoration is extremely unusual in Islamic art, which generally avoids figurative representations. Persian and Turkic influences also appear behind the mosaic images, making the building special. Calligraphic inscriptions and geometric patterns decorate the surfaces on both sides of the entrance gate.

Another distinctive feature of the building is the asymmetric solution of the domes, as the builders tried to symmetrically replicate the structure of the Ulugbek Madrasah, but deviations occurred due to terrain conditions.

Ulugbek Madrasah

Built between 1417 and 1420, it is the oldest building on Registan Square. Founded by Prince Ulugbek, Timur’s grandson, who was not only a ruler but also an outstanding astronomer and mathematician. The institution he created became one of the most significant scientific centers of its time.

The madrasah’s facade is decorated with starry sky motifs, geometric patterns, and arabesques, alluding to Ulugbek’s astronomical interests. Of the building’s four entrances, the main entrance is the most impressive, covered with colorful majolica tiles. The two-story cell rows around the courtyard could accommodate 50-100 students.

Two tall minarets were erected in front of the building, one of which is now damaged, but their original size is still clearly visible. Mathematics, astronomy, theology, and philosophy subjects played a prominent role in education. The building was thoroughly restored in the 20th century and now functions as a museum and cultural space.

Gur-Emir Mausoleum

The resting place of Timur the ruler and his descendants, built between 1403 and 1404. The name means „emir’s tomb” and it became one of Central Asia’s most influential architectural models. The turquoise, ribbed dome is 35 meters high, a landmark of the city visible from afar.

The interior of the mausoleum is breathtaking: the walls are decorated with onyx, marble, and jade, while the ceiling is covered with gilded papier-mâché with muqarnas – honeycomb-like – decoration. Timur’s tomb is made of green jade stone, which according to history came from Genghis Khan’s throne. In reality, the body rests in the underground crypt.

The building’s historical significance is enormous: after Timur’s death in 1405, he was buried here, and later his son, grandson Ulugbek, and other family members were also laid to rest here. Soviet archaeologists opened the crypt in 1941, confirming that Timur was lame. An inscription at the entrance allegedly cursed those who disturb Timur’s rest.

Aksaray Mausoleum

One of the lesser-known but architecturally significant monuments of the Timurid period, built in the second half of the 15th century. The structure was originally part of a larger complex, of which only the mausoleum and some wall remains have survived. The building’s name means „white palace”.

The mausoleum’s dome and facade are decorated with blue and white majolica tiles forming geometric and plant patterns. The interior space is smaller but richly decorated: its walls are covered with mosaics and hand-painted patterns. The architectural style is characteristically Timurid, but early Shaybanid dynasty influences are already perceptible.

The building’s historical role is not entirely clear, but members of a distant branch of Timur’s family were likely buried here. The surrounding area is an archaeological excavation site where new finds are continuously discovered. The mausoleum is less visited than other Samarkand monuments, offering a quiet, authentic experience.

Bibi-Khanym Mosque

One of Central Asia’s largest and most ambitious religious buildings, built by Timur between 1399 and 1404 after his Indian campaign. Tradition says he named it after his favorite wife, Bibi Khanym, though historians believe this is more legend. The building’s dimensions are impressive: the main gate is 35 meters high, the dome’s diameter is 15 meters.

During construction, more than 200 elephants transported building materials from India and Persia. Timur wanted a monumental mosque that would surpass everything he had seen. In the courtyard stands a giant marble holder where the huge Quran was originally placed. Women slide across this holder because belief holds it aids fertility.

This work was only completed in Europe 200 years later with similar accuracy.

The building’s most important part was the massive sextant, partially sunk into the ground. Using this quadrant, they measured the exact length of solar years, differing from modern measurements by only 58 seconds.

Ulugbek died in 1449 on his own son’s orders, and the observatory was destroyed because religious leaders considered astronomy heresy. The building’s ruins were only discovered in 1908 by a Russian archaeologist’s work. Today a museum operates on site, presenting Ulugbek’s scientific achievements.

The cave system counts more than 220 explored caves, of which the Cueva Clara de Empalme, open to the public, is particularly magnificent. The cave chamber, 45 meters high and 65 meters long, is so imposing that an entire cathedral could fit inside it. Million-year-old stalactites hang from the cave’s ceiling, while stalagmites rise from the floor.

The park organizes guided tours where visitors can explore several different caves. The Tres Pueblos cave contains the world’s third-largest underground chamber. The caves are inhabited by special bat species, and visitors can observe these special mammals in their natural habitat. The Barahi Temple in the middle of Phewa Lake is located on a small island that can only be reached by boat. The 10.8-square-kilometer lake is located at an altitude of 2,990 meters in the Mugu district and enchants visitors with its crystal-clear water. Rara National Park surrounding the lake is a protected area that is home to more than 200 bird species, including rare Himalayan species.

A 3-4 day hiking route leads around the lake, offering stunning views of surrounding forests and mountain peaks. There are no permanent settlements in the area, only a few seasonal shepherd huts. The lake’s specialty is that it sometimes changes color depending on sunlight and weather conditions.

Gosaikunda Lake

A sacred lake in the Langtang region that is a destination for Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims.

The lake, located at an altitude of 4,380 meters, is in Langtang National Park and according to Hindu mythology was created by Lord Shiva. Legend says that Shiva drank poison here to save the world, and the lake’s water has had healing powers ever since.

The Gosaikunda trek is a 7-9 day hike that starts from Dhunche village and offers stunning Himalayan panoramas. Along the route, we pass several smaller lakes before reaching the main lake. Every year in August, during the Janai Purnima festival, several thousand pilgrims come here to bathe in the sacred water.

The lake area consists of numerous smaller lakes that together form the Gosaikunda lake system. The area boasts rich flora, including rare Himalayan medicinal plants. During the trek, we pass through rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, and finally reach the lake in the high mountain tundra region, from where there’s a breathtaking view of the Himalayan peaks.
