The park’s main attraction is its rich lemur fauna: alongside the golden bamboo lemur, the red-bellied lemur, the greater bamboo lemur, and numerous other species can be observed along carefully maintained trails. More than 115 bird species inhabit the forests, including the endemic ground roller and the blue coua. The botanical diversity is equally impressive: thousands of orchids, moss-covered trees, and ferns make up the park’s vegetation.

Most visitors spend one or two nights in Ranomafana to observe wildlife on both dawn and evening walks. The small town of Ranomafana, located at the park entrance, is also known for its thermal baths, where locals and tourists alike relax in the warm pools. Night hikes are particularly memorable: by torchlight, chameleons and tiny tenrecs emerge from the forest, and the primeval silence is broken only by the chorus of tropical frogs.

Masoala National Park

Madagascar’s largest protected area and one of the island’s most remote natural wonders is located in the northern part of the country, on the Masoala Peninsula.

In addition to its nearly 230,000 hectares of land, it also contains a marine reserve, designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site under the name Rainforests of the Atsinanana. Reaching the park is itself an adventure: the final stretch can usually only be completed by boat or on foot through dense primary forest.

The park’s rainforests are among the most species-rich habitats in Madagascar: more than 10 lemur species live here, including the red ruffed and the black-and-white ruffed lemur, and the park is also the last refuge of the endemic red-breasted coua. The coral reefs of the coastal waters offer extraordinary diving opportunities. Mangrove forests and tropical rainforests meet within just a few kilometres of each other.

Andasibe-Mantadia National Park

One of the most visited and most easily accessible national parks in Madagascar, just 140 kilometres east of the capital.

It consists of two parts: the smaller, more accessible Analamazaotra Reserve and the much larger, wilder Mantadia section. The park’s lower montane rainforests attract ecotourists year-round thanks to their mild climate and rich fauna.

Its greatest stars are the indri lemurs, the largest living lemur species in the world. In the mornings, the indri greet the day with their deep, melodic, far-carrying song. Visitors walking the trails through the park may also encounter many other lemur species, such as the diademed sifaka or the striking black-and-white ruffed lemur. The park is also botanically rich: orchids, pitcher plants, and various ferns enliven the forest.

Local guides available in the nearby villages have an excellent knowledge of the park and can often locate well-hidden chameleons, tenrecs, and nocturnal lemurs during lantern-lit walks. Near Andasibe, a small orchid garden and a tortoise conservation station can also be visited, both particularly recommended for nature enthusiasts.

Ambohimanga Royal Hill

Meaning “Blue Hill” in Malagasy, this is the most important and sacred historical site in the country, just 24 kilometres north of the capital.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the hill was the spiritual and political centre of the former Merina Kingdom and remains an active religious pilgrimage site to this day. The small town clustered around the fortified walls is filled with a special, almost intangible sense of reverence and a drift into the past.

At the top of the hill, the palaces, ritual huts, and baths of 18th-century Merina kings and queens have survived in a state close to their original form. The entrance to the seven-gated fortress was sealed each night by enormous stone discs. A single central post supported the entire structure of the palace – an architectural feat unique on the island and throughout the entire Indian Ocean region.

Walking around the fortress, visitors can study the way of life of the Malagasy kingdom up close: the ancient furniture, ritual objects, and paintings paint a vivid picture of everyday life among the Merina aristocracy. From the top of the hill, there is a magnificent view over the green-clad mountains and, in the distance, the rooftops of the capital.

Antananarivo

Affectionately known as “Tana”, Madagascar’s vibrant, hillside capital is a place where the old and new worlds exist side by side.

Spread across the rolling hills of the central Madagascar plateau, the city is home to more than 3 million people. It is visually striking too: white and ochre-toned buildings line the steep mountain streets.

At the heart of the upper city, the Haute-Ville, stands the Rova, the former royal palace fortress, which offers a panoramic view over the entire capital. The Zoma market was once one of the world’s largest open-air markets; today the local grey and orange market halls bustle with traders, spices, handicrafts, and fresh fruit. The Avenue de l’Indépendance, the city’s main promenade, evokes the style of the old French colonial era.

Tana’s gastronomy is also worth a few days’ exploration: the local romazava and zebu beef rice dishes are best tried in the restaurants of the various neighbourhoods. Ifaty

A sleepy fishing village on the shores of the Mozambique Channel, just 27 kilometres north of Toliara, which has grown into one of the most popular coastal destinations on Madagascar’s southern coast. A few kilometres from the shore lies the Reniala Nature Reserve, where enormous ancient baobab trees form the characteristic landscape of southern Madagascar. The waters around Ifaty are among the best diving networks in the country: the coral reefs conceal sea turtles, grouper, and sea rays. During whale season, from July to September, boat-based whale-watching excursions depart from the shore.

Avenue of the Baobabs

Perhaps Madagascar’s most iconic location, not far from the town of Morondava in the western part of the country.

Centuries-old baobab trees, some reaching 25 to 30 metres in height, line both sides of a dirt road and offer a breathtaking spectacle in the light of the rising or setting sun. These giant, corkscrew-trunked trees are remnants of ancient rainforests, gradually surrounded over the centuries by agricultural land.

Nosy Be

The scent of the island’s cultivated ylang-ylang blossoms is noticeable everywhere, which is why it earned the nickname the Island of Flowers.

Among the island’s most famous beaches are Andilana Beach and Ambatoloaka, where white sand and turquoise water await visitors. The nearby smaller islands – Nosy Komba, Nosy Tanikely, and Nosy Sakatia – are all perfect day-trip destinations: their deep blue waters are ideal for diving and snorkelling, turtle and shark watching is organised along the shores, and the jungles are home to the tiny black lemur.

Tsingy de Bemaraha

Madagascar’s most astounding natural spectacle, and one of the world’s most extraordinary limestone formation systems.

Located in the Melaky region in the western part of the country, this UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site is made up of razor-sharp limestone needles, chasms, and dizzying rock formations that combine into a landscape reminiscent of another planet. The word tsingy means “where one cannot walk barefoot” in Malagasy.

The park offers two types of landscape: the Grand Tsingy and the Petit Tsingy, both equally impressive but offering hiking of different levels of difficulty. Hidden in the crevices and valleys between the rocks, enclosed ecosystems have developed, home to endemic plant and animal species, including rare lemurs, chameleons, and birds found nowhere else on Earth. The trails running across zip lines and suspension bridges offer a true adventure hike.

Getting there is an adventure in itself: during the rainy season, the muddy roads are almost impassable, so most visitors come during the dry season, from June to November. Isalo National Park

Madagascar’s “Grand Canyon” lies in the south-central part of the island in the Fianarantsoa region, and is among the country’s most spectacular and most visited parks, thanks to its red erosion-sculpted sandstone cliffs, canyon systems, and natural pools. The unique, almost Martian landscape is revered by the Sakalava people as the home of their ancestors, and numerous rock niches conceal ancient burial sites deep within the sandstone walls.

The park’s pride is its series of natural cold and warm water pools, which tumble through the canyons in beautiful waterfalls and emerald green oases. The Cascade des Nymphes and the Piscine Naturelle are particularly well known: their crystal-clear waters offer a refreshing dip during the heat of the day.

One of the most memorable activities in Isalo is hiking along the rock arches and the trails of the Canyon des Makis, where the grey-red formations and the blue sky create a picturesque contrast. The small town of Ranohira beside the park serves as a comfortable base camp.

Ile Sainte Marie

Kunya-Urgench

Karakum Desert

The desert doesn’t consist of simple sand seas but offers varied landscapes: massive sand dunes, saline plains, steppe areas, and oases alternate. The Karakum Canal, one of the world’s longest irrigation canals, crosses it, channeling water from the Amu Darya River.

The desert’s unique wildlife has adapted to extreme conditions. The rare Turkmen wild ass, desert monitor lizard, and numerous snake species live here. Desert vegetation, especially saxaul shrubs, can survive with their deeply penetrating roots. Kopet Dag Mountains

The cave ceiling is decorated with impressive stalactite formations, from which water droplets fall into the lake. The lake’s depth exceeds 10 meters in places, so you can both swim and dive in it. According to locals, the sulfurous water has beneficial effects on skin and joints. The cave’s special acoustics and warm, humid air create an atmosphere that is both relaxing and mystical.

Nisa

Located 18 kilometers west of Ashgabat are the ruins of the ancient Parthian capital, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The remains of the Parthian Empire’s first capital date from the 3rd century BC. It is divided into two areas: Old Nisa was the royal fortress and palace complex, while New Nisa was the urban settlement site. In Old Nisa, the famous „Parthian rhytons” were found – wine-bearing vessels with ivory decoration, now displayed in the National Museum.

The ruins still contain remnants of the massive walled fortress, including the foundations of the „Round Hall” and „Square Hall”. These were likely venues for royal celebrations and religious ceremonies. Excavations have uncovered countless treasures: statues, jewelry, weapons, and various household items that demonstrate the high cultural level of Parthian civilization. Yangykala Canyon

Located in northwestern Turkmenistan, near the Caspian Sea, this stunning, colorful rock formation is breathtaking.

Garabogazköl

The lagoon’s name means „black throat”, referring to the fact that it is separated from the Caspian Sea by a narrow strait. The lagoon’s uniqueness lies in the fact that water evaporation is so intense that the salt content is extremely high, exceeding even the Dead Sea’s salt content. Due to evaporation, the lagoon’s water level continuously decreases, leaving massive salt fields behind.

The contrast between white salt crystals and blue-turquoise water creates a special sight. The lagoon’s surroundings also have industrial significance, as one of the world’s largest natural deposits of sodium sulfate is located here. Despite the area’s extreme environment, a few extremely salt-tolerant microorganisms survive in the water. Walking along the lagoon’s shore, we can experience a moon-like, surreal environment.

Turkmenabat

Turkmenistan’s second-largest city on the banks of the Amu Darya River, in the eastern part of the country, near the Uzbek border.

The city, formerly known as Chardzhou, is an important transportation hub and commercial center. The city’s green parks and promenades along the Amu Darya River create a pleasant contrast with the surrounding desert landscape. Near the city is the Repetek Biosphere Reserve, which protects the Karakum Desert’s natural wildlife.

The modern building of Turkmenabat State University and the architecture of the Silk Road Hotel in the city center are also noteworthy. Burana Tower

One of Kyrgyzstan’s most important historical monuments, located about 80 kilometers from Bishkek in the Chuy Valley.

The minaret, built in the 11th century, belonged to the ancient city of Balasagun, which was one of the significant centers of the Karakhanid Empire along the Silk Road. It was originally about 45 meters high, but due to earthquakes, it now rises to about 25 meters.

The tower’s brick decoration and conical shape are fine examples of Central Asian Islamic architecture. In the surrounding archaeological park, balbal stone statues, tombstones, and a small museum can be viewed.

Ala-Archa National Park

Located just 40 kilometers south of the capital, this national park is one of Kyrgyzstan’s most popular natural destinations. The park extends along the northern slopes of the Tien Shan mountains and was named after the wild apple trees found here.

According to legend, the rocks forming seven bulls originated from a tragic love story. A local khan kidnapped a beautiful girl who was also loved by another tribe’s prince. When the prince attacked the khan to retrieve his love, the girl lost her life in the battle, and the blood flowing from her heart became seven streams, from which the rocks rose.

The red rock walls rise 40-50 meters high and are especially spectacular in sunlight. Nearby is another famous rock formation, the Broken Heart, which forms a split rock mass. The area is a popular excursion spot where healing springs also emerge, which locals use to treat rheumatic complaints.

Bokonbayevo

According to legend, Alexander the Great’s soldiers rested here and planted the first walnut trees. While this is not historically proven, the forest’s age is indeed ancient, and genetic research suggests this may be the place from which walnut trees spread to Europe and Asia. Communities living in the forest have been collecting walnuts for centuries, which is an important source of income for them.

The Arslanbob area also includes two wonderful waterfalls. The Big Waterfall cascades down from 80 meters, while the Small Waterfall is 25 meters high but wider and more easily accessible. Morrocoy National Park

Axum

Wonchi

This impressive crater village is located at an altitude of 3,450 meters, making it Ethiopia’s highest volcano.

The volcano, which erupted about 1,000 years ago, left behind an asymmetrical caldera, which is now covered with lush green vegetation. The crater is filled with a large lake with small islands, hot mineral springs, waterfalls, and beautiful valleys and agricultural areas.

One of the islands is home to the Wonchi Cherkos monastery, founded in the 13th century by the Ethiopian saint Tekle Haymanot. The monastery houses the famous Gondor bell, which is said to have belonged to Emperor Fasilides.

Visitors can explore the crater on foot or on horseback with a mandatory guide. The 4-kilometer hike to the lake takes about 45 minutes on foot and half that time on horseback. In 2021, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) named Wonchi the world’s best tourist village.

The 17th-century castle complex uniquely combines African, Arab, Indian, and Baroque architectural elements. The complex’s central building is Fasilides’ Castle, which rises 32 meters high with its three-story tower. The thick stone walls and defensive elements testify that this was not only a palace but also a fortress.

Among the complex’s other buildings are Iyasu’s Palace, Dawit’s Courthouse, and Iyasu’s Library. Each building shows unique stylistic features but harmoniously fits into the complete composition. The castles are connected by gardens, courtyards, and hidden passages.
