Pilgrims and tourists reach the temple complex via 309 steps on a naga staircase depicting serpents’ bodies, though for convenience, a funicular is also available.

Royal Park Ratchapruek

Southwest of the city, about 10 kilometers away, lies this botanical garden and park, created for the 2006 Royal Flora exhibition held on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of King Bhumibol IX’s reign. The 80-hectare area is now one of Thailand’s most impressive parks. Its name (Ratchapruek) refers to the country’s national flower, the golden shower tree, which is also abundantly found in the area.

The park’s central attraction is the Ho Kham Royal Pavilion, a stunning golden wooden structure built in traditional Lanna architectural style. This pavilion originally served to display Buddha relics at the 2006 event and has since hosted exhibitions about the Thai royal family’s history and cultural heritage.

The garden is arranged in international sections: with contributions from more than 30 countries, thematic gardens have been built showcasing the flora of different continents. The Chinese garden features classic pagodas, the Japanese section zen elements, while the European section stands out with formally trimmed hedges. The orchid pavilion houses more than 2,000 orchid species, representing approximately 1.5 million plants in total. This is one of the largest orchid collections in Southeast Asia.

Bua Thong Waterfall (Sticky Waterfall)

Doi Inthanon National Park

Thailand’s highest point, the 2,565-meter Doi Inthanon peak, lies approximately 90 kilometers southwest of Chiang Mai. In the national park’s territory, tropical rainforests, cloud forests, waterfalls, and terraced rice paddy villages alternate depending on altitude. Around the summit, the temperature can be 10-15 degrees lower than in the valley, and in winter it can even drop below freezing.

The museum is air-conditioned, making it a pleasant refuge from hot afternoon hours. They provide free admission one day a week and regularly organize temporary exhibitions about contemporary artists or special historical topics.

Lanna Folklife Museum

Opened in 2007 in the beautifully restored former courthouse, which stands near Tha Phae Gate. The building itself is an architectural masterpiece: built in the 1920s with a mix of colonial and Lanna style elements, its white walls and red roofing create an elegant contrast. The museum’s aim is to present the daily life, traditions, and beliefs of the Lanna people in an interactive and entertaining way.

In the exhibition rooms, lifelike dioramas bring to life last century’s Chiang Mai street life, markets, religious ceremonies, and craft workshops. Excellent quality displays showcase traditional clothing, jewelry, tools, and household equipment. Upstairs, a separate section deals with rice cultivation and related rituals, which still play a central role in northern Thai culture.

Visitors can try traditional instruments, learn about Thai court etiquette, and discover much about Lanna astrology.

Lanna Traditions Museum

Hidden on the banks of the Ping River is this meticulously restored traditional northern Thai residential complex, consisting of six original wooden houses over 100 years old.

French artist and collector Didier Coupel saved and relocated these buildings from their original locations to the current site in 1996. The individual houses had different functions – bedroom, kitchen, storage – demonstrating the spatial organization of traditional Lanna family life.

The collection contains antique ceramics, carved wood panels, furniture, ritual instruments, and everyday objects that provide insight into the aristocratic Lanna lifestyle. The buildings’ characteristic pillar-supported, elevated structure provided protection from floods and animals, while the steep roofing and ventilated walls adapted to the monsoon climate.

The visitor experience is intimate and personal: the museum accepts small groups by prior appointment, so the owner or expert guides can explain the history of each object in detail. From the terraces, there are beautiful views of the river and surrounding gardens, where traditional medicinal herbs and spices grow.

Arts and Cultural Centre (Chiang Mai City Arts & Cultural Centre)

Opened in 2006 in the historic city hall building, this museum provides a comprehensive picture of Chiang Mai’s history from its foundation to the present day. The building stands next to the Three Kings Monument, which is a symbolic location, as the three kings (Mengrai, Ngam Muang, and Ramkhamhaeng) founded the city in 1296. The classic Lanna-style building elegantly fits into the old city’s character.

The museum works with modern museum education tools: multimedia installations, 3D reconstructions, and interactive displays guide visitors through the city’s history. The collection emphasizes the city’s multicultural character, showing the contribution of Thai, Chinese, Shan, and other ethnic groups to Chiang Mai’s development. Separate rooms deal with urban planning, the history of trade, and religious life.

Particularly impressive is the central hall, where a huge model shows the entire old city with all significant temples and buildings, which helps understand the city’s spatial layout. Visiting the museum is an excellent starting point for exploring the city, as it provides context to later visited places.

Chiang Mai weather: when is the best time to visit?

Chiang Mai has a tropical monsoon climate characterized by three well-distinguishable seasons. Throughout the year, the temperature varies relatively little, generally moving between 15-35 degrees Celsius, but the amount of precipitation and weather conditions differ dramatically according to the seasons. Due to the city’s northern mountainous location, nights can be cooler than in southern Thai cities, especially during the winter months.

Cool season (November–February):

This is the most pleasant period, when daytime temperatures range between 25-30 degrees, and at night can cool down to as low as 15 degrees. Precipitation is minimal, the sky is generally clear, and humidity is low. December and January are particularly popular among tourists, when mountainous areas can measure 5-10 degrees of cold in the mornings.

Hot season (March–May):

During this period, temperatures regularly reach or exceed 35-40 degrees, with April being the hottest month. The air is dry, dust and haze (partly from burning smoke) can impair visibility, especially in March-April, when surrounding areas burn fields. UV radiation is particularly strong, so sun protection is essential.

Rainy season (June–October):

The southwest monsoon period, when most precipitation falls, mainly in the form of short, intense afternoon and evening showers. Temperatures range around 28-32 degrees, but can feel suffocating due to high humidity. September and October are generally the rainiest months. Rain rarely lasts all day, so morning hours are often pleasant for sightseeing.

Best time to travel Chiang Mai:

For most travelers, the period between November and February is ideal for visiting Chiang Mai, when the weather is pleasant, precipitation is minimal, and nature displays lush green or golden hues. December and January are particularly recommended, when temperatures are most pleasant, though this is when most tourists arrive, so accommodation prices are higher and popular locations are more crowded. In February, the weather starts to warm up, but it’s still very suitable for sightseeing and exploring surrounding national parks. Early in the rainy season, in June-July, is also worth visiting for those who want to avoid crowds: the weather isn’t too wet yet, the landscape is fresh green, and accommodations are available at more favorable prices.

Bangkok is the capital and largest city of Thailand. The city center lies on the right bank of the Chao Phraya River, next to the Gulf of Thailand (Gulf of Siam). Its nickname: „Venice of the East”.

It’s relatively new, being just over 200 years old. Bangkok was built out of necessity after the previous capital, Ayutthaya, was destroyed in 1767.

Bangkok attractions

Grand Palace

The palace complex was built by Bangkok’s first king in 1782, and each ruler has since expanded it, resulting in a mixture of various styles. It includes over 95 sacred pagodas, temples, museums, galleries, and the royal pantheon. The complex is surrounded by a white wall.

In addition to the palace, the complex also houses the Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), the royal chapel. The temple’s stupas are gilded, and the roofs are covered in bright orange and green tiles.

Expect crowds. The last time I was there, there were so many people we didn’t even join the queue, as it would have taken an hour…

Chinatown

Like every major city’s Chinatown, markets and eateries dominate here. If you delve deeper, you can find some „interesting” things.

We found ourselves in the middle of a meat market and saw things that were sometimes quite disturbing – literally. 🙂

Lumpini Park

The largest park in Bangkok’s downtown, featuring playgrounds and an artificial lake over 57 hectares. Interestingly, you can encounter monitor lizards, who often don’t bother people.

Additionally, there are more attractions and entertainment options, including King Rama VI’s statue, Bangkok’s first public library, and a music festival.

Jim Thompson House Museum

Jim Thompson was a silk trader whose traditional Thai house is home to a unique art collection. He is credited with reviving the Thai silk industry after World War II.

The museum in the house showcases silk production, has a valuable collection, and a beautiful garden.

Patpong

This red-light district is the center of nightlife. Nowadays, you mostly find the ladies indoors, but they used to almost overrun the streets.

The bars offer quite wild „productions”. The streets constantly entice tourists, often with the lure of a „ping pong show”. If you’re curious, look up what this means in Bangkok. I’ve seen one live, well, it’s interesting… 🙂

But everyone be careful, as almost everyone here specializes in ripping off tourists! Don’t give in to temptation, and feel free to refuse the „kind” invitations!

Bangkok National Museum

If someone wants to visit a museum, this is the place to go. It offers a comprehensive overview of Thailand’s history and cultural peculiarities.

The museum building itself is beautiful, with a pleasant park included.

Thai boxing

When in Thailand, you can include a Thai boxing (muay thai) match in your itinerary. I must admit, I skipped it both times I was there, as this type of sport doesn’t really attract me.

Most matches are held in the Rajadamnern Stadium, with multiple matches per week.

Temples

It’s no surprise that Bangkok and Thailand are full of Buddhist temples. We stumble upon a temple at almost every corner. Here are some of the most interesting ones.

Always make sure to dress appropriately when entering temples! Knees and shoulders should be covered, and clothing shouldn’t be too flashy.

Wat Arun

Located across the Chao Phraya River from the Grand Palace, this temple, „Temple of Dawn”, is perhaps the most famous among tourists. In my personal experience, it’s one of the most beautiful places among Bangkok attractions.

Its standout feature is the central prang (Khmer-style tower), decorated with seashells and porcelain pieces. Steep stairs lead to its two terraces.

Wat Pho

One of Bangkok’s largest and oldest temples, built nearly 200 years ago. It houses many images of Buddha.

It’s most famous for its enormous reclining Buddha statue, which is 43 meters long and 15 meters high.

Wat Traimit

The world’s largest gold Buddha statue is located in the temple’s main hall. Including the base, it’s 4.79 meters tall, weighs 5500 kg, and is made of 18-karat gold.

Wat Saket

Its main attraction is the Golden Mount, built in the 1800s, with a gilded dome rising above the city, offering a nice view of Bangkok.

The golden stupa contains the earthly remains of Buddha.

Markets

As in most Asian countries, you’ll find plenty of markets here. I can safely recommend including a market visit among Bangkok attractions!

Khao San Market

Bangkok’s most famous market, which turns into a nightlife district in the evening. For me, it wasn’t much different from other markets, but the street is worth a walk.

The area has many hotels, making it popular with tourists. There are plenty of eateries, restaurants, bars, and vendors in this part.

Chatuchak Market

A very large market, where I spent hours. You can find almost everything here. I myself was occupied for a few hours.

Expect large crowds, as it’s a popular market. Many consider it one of the world’s largest markets.

Talad Rot Fai Train Night Market Ratchada

As the name suggests, it’s a night market. It opens late afternoon and stays open past midnight. Basically, the same can be said about it as the others: everything is here!

The food is delicious, and if you’re adventurous, you can try fried insects. I tried them in Cambodia a couple of days before, so I skipped them here.

Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market

There used to be many floating markets, as trading often took place on the water. Today, only a few remain, and Khlong Lat Mayom is perhaps the most famous. It’s a bit out of downtown but worth visiting!

The market is located along a canal, with a few vendors still selling from boats, mainly for tourists. You can also take a boat ride through the canals.

Here, you take a step back in time, as it’s not directly in downtown, and poverty is visible. But it’s worth visiting just for the food alone.

Bangkok weather

Bangkok has a tropical climate. Humidity is high most of the year, making the weather often feel oppressive.

The best time to visit is from December to March. Daytime temperatures are around 30 degrees Celsius, and humidity is at its lowest. Rain can occur, but these are usually short showers.

The wettest month is September, but heavy rains are common in the other months of the May-October period.

It has good public safety, and the cost of living is not high, making it ideal for relaxation, excursions, and honeymoons.

As in Bangkok, the tuk-tuk is the main means of transportation in Phuket. Here, you’ll mostly see three-wheeled motorized tuk-tuks.

Phuket attractions

Patong

Patong is the most bustling part of the island. Most hotels are located here, making it a good starting point for exploring attractions.

Bangla Road is the center of this area, bustling with shops, entertainment venues, and restaurants. There are many 18+ bars here, potentially a favorite street for men. 🙂

However, the large crowd means that its beach can be quite dirty. When I was there, I didn’t even want to go into the water because of the litter on the shore. Below, I’ll list several beaches that are much cleaner!

Karon Village

Located south of Patong, it’s the second most popular place on the island. It’s much calmer and more subdued than Patong.

Its long beach features golden sand, providing an ideal setting for a quieter holiday.

Karon View Point

Located south of Karon, along route 4233, this viewpoint offers a beautiful view of the western coastline.

Big Buddha

The 45-meter tall marble Buddha statue is located on a mountain peak between Karon and Chalong.

It offers a dazzling 360° panorama of both the eastern and western coasts. This is why it was built here, to be visible from most places.

It’s worth renting a motorbike and going up through the bamboo forest (there’s a road from Phuket town). You can also hike up from Kata and Karon Village on a jungle trail, which is steep in places.

Admission is free, with donations used for the statue’s upkeep.

Tiger Kingdom

Located not far from Patong, in Kathu, this tiger park is controversial for keeping tigers, but the animals are visibly well cared for.

You can take photos with the tigers, pet the cubs, watch demonstrations, and many other activities are available.

Elephant riding, Elephant tour

There are several places to ride elephants, but it’s important to choose where the animals are well treated.

One of the best elephant riding parks on the island’s eastern side is Phuket Elephant Sanctuary.

At truly good places, interaction with elephants is supervised by trained caretakers. After feeding, you can ride an elephant, with various durations to choose from.

Gibbon Rehabilitation Project

Located near the above-mentioned elephant park, this center was created as a great initiative.

The staff here help illegally kept animals to reintegrate into the wild.

A short walk leads to the Bang Pae waterfall, cascading down a narrow rock corridor.

Dolphin Show Park (Dolphins Bay Nemo Phuket)

A relatively new park, starting with a seal show, followed by a dolphin performance.

The audience sits close to the pool, allowing an up-close view of the amazing show. There’s an opportunity to take photos with the dolphins.

Promthep Cape

The southernmost part of Phuket, with several restaurants and shops catering to tourists. Most people come here to watch the sunset.

A path leads to the tip of the small peninsula, allowing you to stand at the island’s southernmost point.

Aquarium

Located at the southern tip of the island. It’s quite removed from the main attractions and is a typical aquarium, so it’s worth visiting if you have spare time during your vacation.

Wat Chalong

Located north of Chalong, this temple is perhaps the most beautiful among the many in the area, and it’s well worth visiting at least this one! Women need to wear a dress reaching at least to the knees and a shawl covering the shoulders.

Botanical Garden

The plants are organized into thematic gardens, showcasing brilliant flowers. A special feature is the opportunity to touch koi fish during feeding.

Tarzan Adventure Phuket

This adventure park in the southern part of the island offers zip lines, climbing courses, and many other adrenaline-pumping activities.

Phuket Town

It’s not worth spending much time in the island’s central city. It’s best to visit the old town and the lookout points to the north.

Old Phuket Town

The old town area of Phuket is worth a visit. It’s filled with beautiful buildings, temples, and markets offering excellent food at the cheapest prices.

It is characterised by its colourful buildings, which are a mixture of Portuguese and Chinese styles.

Sunday Night Market

On Sunday evenings in the old town, along Thalang Road, vendors set up their stalls.

Most shops on the street open during this time, making it a great Sunday evening program due to the wide selection and atmosphere.

Weekend Night Market (Naka Market)

If you’re in town over the weekend, don’t miss this fantastic market!

A wide selection of fruits, cooked and grilled foods, clothes, and electronics await tourists. Open Saturday and Sunday from 4 PM to 9 PM!

Monkey Hill

Located north of Phuket, along To Chae Road, you can encounter many monkeys on the way up.

They’re reportedly not aggressive, and it’s worth bringing some fruit to feed them. Be careful with your bags, as some monkeys might try to take them from you! 🙂

The road is closed to traffic from 5 PM to 8 PM!

Rang Hill

Located in the northern part of Phuket, this lookout offers views of Phuket’s colorful houses and the coastline beyond.

After seeing the view from Big Buddha, the cityscape might seem less impressive.

Phi Phi Islands: Maya Beach

To the east lie the two main islands, Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh. The former is the only one with accommodation, while the latter can only be visited during the day, in organized groups.

Many tour operators in Phuket organize daily trips to these two beautiful islands. Phi Phi Leh island is home to the famous and one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, Maya Beach. A must-visit for anyone holidaying in Phuket!

The beach was closed for an indefinite period due to environmental damage. It is promised to be opened in the future, but no date is known.

James Bond Island

Named after the protagonist of the film shot here, this island is located north of Phuket.

Characterized by interesting natural formations, beautiful lagoons, and bays, the easiest way to visit is through organized tours.

Its most famous feature is the standing rock pillar, Ko Tapu.

Phuket beaches

There are many excellent beaches, especially on the western side of the island.

From personal experience, I recommend choosing more secluded, lesser-known beaches. They are less crowded and much more beautiful than the well-known, often crowded beaches.

Patong Beach

Patong is the island’s center, so its beach is the most well-known.

As mentioned earlier, it’s not the most beautiful beach, often littered with trash. (When I visited, there was a lot of garbage and the water was murky.)

Karon Beach

Also mentioned earlier, located south of Patong is the beach of Karon Village.

The beach itself is much more beautiful, with golden sand and stunning views, making it a better choice to visit.

The beach has a gentle slope, making it an excellent choice for children.

Kata Beach

Further south from Karon, Kata Village’s beach is even quieter.

The sand here is a bit whiter and less developed. However, it’s worth visiting for a day!

Nai Harn Beach

Near the southernmost point is the beach of Nai Harn neighborhood, a peaceful beach surrounded by trees, offering a rural atmosphere with a touch of hippie vibe.

The bay’s beach has fine golden sand that slopes gently into the water.

Freedom Beach

My personal favorite is this secluded beach a few kilometers from Patong. Accessible by tuk-tuk or boat, many people are unaware of it.

Located in a small bay with white sand, rich marine life, and coconut palms, it’s a wonderful place for relaxation and usually not crowded.

Nai Thon Beach

Located close to the airport, it’s less crowded as it’s away from central areas.

The golden sandy beach is wide and has a gentle slope, making it suitable for children.

Kamala Beach

Located north of Patong is the beach of Kamala settlement.

The approximately 1.5 km long beach has fine sand, and the sea is shallow. It’s a great spot for water sports enthusiasts.

Weather

The climate is tropical monsoon. There’s little variation in temperature throughout the year.

The most pleasant time for travel is from mid-November to February, with very little rainfall and almost constant sunshine. However, sudden showers can occur at any time.

The rainy monsoon season is from May to October, during which the frequent rain and high humidity make it less ideal for holidays.

Bangkok

Thailand’s capital mixes traditional Eastern culture with modern urban life and is famous for its wonderful temples, palaces, and markets.

The city, stretching along the Chao Phraya River, has historical roots dating back to the 18th century, when it became an important commercial center after the fall of Ayutthaya.

Its most beautiful sight is the Grand Palace. The complex was the official residence of the Thai royal family and houses the famous Emerald Buddha Temple.

Among the temples, I would highlight two. Wat Arun, or the Temple of Dawn, is one of Bangkok’s most well-known and spectacular temples, famous for its decorations made of glittering porcelain and unique Khmer-style tower. Wat Pho, also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, is another significant religious site that houses the world’s largest reclining Buddha statue.

Chiang Mai

Located in the northern part of Thailand, close to the Burmese border. Therefore, it’s much more rugged than other parts of Thailand.

Similar to Bangkok, it also has many beautiful temples. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is located on a mountaintop and offers wonderful views, while Wat Chedi Luang preserves the memory of the Lanna kingdom.

The area has numerous elephant sanctuaries providing shelter for rescued elephants. These sanctuaries allow visitors to get up close and personal with the elephants, participating in their feeding and bathing.

Phuket

Located in the Andaman Sea, it’s the country’s largest island and also the name of its center.

It’s one of Thailand’s most visited places, a true tourist paradise with excellent beaches and vibrant nightlife. The island’s most popular beaches include Patong Beach, as well as the nearby Karon and Kata Beach. However, I recommend looking for a more secluded beach, which can be much more enjoyable than the ones mentioned.

A must-visit is the Big Buddha! The 45-meter-tall statue made of white marble, located at the top of Nakkerd Hill, offers spectacular views of the surrounding area and the sea.

And of course, Phuket’s old town should also be visited. In addition to the temples, the Chinese–Portuguese style houses are striking, remnants of the past. And exploring the markets here is also a great activity.

Phuket attractions, beaches

Maya Beach

Mentioned as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, thanks to its stunning location and white sandy beach.

The beach is located in a bay, surrounded by huge rocks. Turning into it by boat is an unforgettable experience! I was there in 2018 and indeed it was one of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever experienced.

Its popularity was cemented by the 2000 film „The Beach” starring Leonardo DiCaprio. However, excessive tourism caused environmental damage, leading Thai authorities to ban its visitation for an indefinite period in 2019 to allow nature to recover.

Ayutthaya

Located not far north of Bangkok, it was Thailand’s former capital.

From the 14th century onwards, it was the center of the Siamese Kingdom for over 400 years until it was destroyed by the Burmese army in 1767. Today, it’s part of UNESCO World Heritage.

Among its attractions, Wat Phra Si Sanphet must be mentioned. The temple on the former royal palace grounds is known for its row of large stupas. Another important site is Wat Mahathat, famous for the Buddha head entwined in tree roots, symbolizing the intertwining of Buddhism and nature.

Maeklong Railway Market

Surely you’ve seen that market where a train passes through. Located in Samut Songkhram city, southwest of Bangkok.

Trains pass through the market several times a day in each direction, during which local vendors with practiced movements quickly lower their awnings, move their goods away from the tracks, and moments after the train has passed, everything is put back in place. Over time, they have learned the size of the train, so often goods and people are just millimeters away.

Lampang

Located in the northern part, this city uniquely preserves traditional Thai culture and architecture, thanks to the well-preserved wooden buildings and ancient temples.

Interestingly, horse-drawn carriages still play an important role in local transportation, giving Lampang a unique atmosphere. Additionally, its ceramics industry is significant, especially the beautifully hand-painted porcelains.

Wat Phra That Lampang Luang is a beautiful Lanna-style Buddhist temple, one of the city’s main attractions, famous for its carved wooden details and decorated stucco work.

Koh Samui

Previously dominated by agriculture and fishing, tourism has now become the mainstay of the island’s economy. Its main attraction is due to its coconut palm-fringed sandy beaches.

The three longest and most developed beaches are Choeng Mon, Chaweng, and Lamai. Here, you can rent surfboards and boats. The smaller beaches are typically like a postcard: clear blue sea, white sandy shores, lush coconut palm plantations.

Chiang Rai

This city near the Burmese-Laotian-Thai tri-border area is becoming increasingly popular due to the region and a famous temple.

The city’s most well-known attraction is Wat Rong Khun, also known as the White Temple. Designed by Chalermchai Kositpipat, often referred to as the Thai Gaudí, the entirely white building is decorated with small glass pieces and rich decorative elements. Reflective mirrors are embedded in the main temple’s plaster.

I would recommend two cultural programs. The Baan Dam Museum, or the Black House, is a unique art collection created by Thai artist Thawan Duchanee. Around the city, you can also get acquainted with the culture and lifestyle of the hill tribe.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

Besides the railway market, this is another extraordinary market.

Located west of Bangkok, on the Damnoen Saduak river and canals, where traders sell fresh produce, local foods, handicrafts, and souvenirs on small boats.

Tourists can roam the market on the shore or by boat, which truly provides a unique experience.

Krabi

Next to Phuket, Krabi is another most-visited location in Southern Thailand. Its two famous beaches are Ao Nang and Railay Beach.

The city is surrounded by high limestone cliffs, which are symbols of Krabi province. The most famous is the twin-peaked Kanab Nam on the riverfront. A 15-minute boat ride from the city takes you to the foot of the cliffs, where stairs lead up to the peak.

Besides the beaches, Wat Tham Sua (Tiger Cave Temple) is a must-visit! It is one of Southern Thailand’s most revered forest temples. Its main hall, where meditation is practiced, is set up inside a cave. A 300 m long staircase leads up to a large Buddha statue on the rock top, offering a great view of the surrounding landscape.

Koh Lanta

The archipelago south of Krabi is an ideal destination for those who like to actively relax.

The main island, Koh Lanta Yai, is famous for its long, golden sandy beaches, such as Long Beach and Kantiang Bay. It is a favorite spot for divers due to the rich marine life around its coral-fringed shores.

The island houses the Mu Ko Lanta National Park, which has extensive rainforests and mangrove forests, and is home to many wildlife species.

Phang Nga Bay

A large bay between Phuket and Krabi, popular for boat trips.

The shallow bay consists of 42 limestone islands, with mangrove forests covering several parts of its shore. Caves have formed in the limestone rocks of several islands, some of which are navigable by boat.

The world took notice of the bay after the release of the James Bond film „The Man with the Golden Gun” in 1974. In the film, Bond flies over the islands, then lands on the island since named after James Bond, where he fights his adversary. The island’s striking mushroom-shaped rock is referred to as James Bond Rock.

Another attraction is Koh Panyi, a village of the sea gypsy nationality, Muslim religion. About 200 years ago, the ancestors of today’s residents settled and built their stilt houses.

Kanchanaburi

This city in Western Thailand is significant both historically and naturally.

Here, the Japanese army forced prisoners and local workers to build a railway line to connect Thailand with Burma. This was called the Death Railway, as many died during its construction.
