The capital of North Macedonia stretches along the banks of the Vardar River. Construction of the mosque began in 1794, founded by Et’hem Bey, a local Ottoman nobleman. The building is a masterpiece of classical Ottoman mosque architecture, decorated with beautiful calligraphy and plant motifs. The uniqueness of the frescoes and decorative elements inside the mosque lies in their depiction of natural motifs, which is unusual in Islamic art.

During the communist era, the mosque was closed and its use for religious purposes was prohibited. It was reopened for worshippers in 1991, after the restoration of democracy. Today it serves as an active religious center where services are regularly held, and visitors can also gain insight into Islamic culture.

Next to the mosque stands a 35-meter-tall minaret, offering beautiful views of the city.

Tirana Castle

The fortress located in the city’s historic center is Tirana’s oldest built monument and the site of the city’s founding.

The castle was built in the 6th century during the Byzantine Empire, and later held important strategic significance under Ottoman rule. Over the centuries, it was rebuilt and expanded several times, so today architectural elements from different historical periods are mixed in the building complex.

Today, the castle houses several museums and cultural institutions, including archaeological exhibitions and contemporary art galleries. The castle holds special significance in Albanian history, as this is where the first permanent settlement was established, which later became Tirana.

The Pyramid

One of Tirana’s most controversial and interesting buildings, which is a symbol of the communist past.

The building was originally constructed in 1988 as a memorial museum for communist dictator Enver Hoxha, three years after his death. The futuristic pyramid-shaped concrete building was intended to proclaim the glory of the totalitarian regime, but after the regime change, it lost its original function. It stood empty for years and was a constant topic in the city’s development plans.

The building’s fate was surrounded by uncertainty for a long time. Finally, they decided to renovate it and transform it into a new cultural center. According to the plans, it will become a modern technological and educational center that will provide a home for young people’s creative activities.

Today, the Pyramid has become something of an urban legend. Young people often climb to the top of the building to enjoy the city’s panorama from there. The park around the building is a popular meeting place and a venue for graffiti and spontaneous artistic actions. The Pyramid has thus paradoxically become a symbol of freedom, in contrast to its original totalitarian purpose.

Christ’s Resurrection Orthodox Cathedral

Tirana’s largest Orthodox church and one of the Balkans’ most imposing religious buildings, serving as the central sanctuary of the Albanian Orthodox community.

The cathedral was consecrated in 2012, after a planning and construction process that lasted for long decades. The huge dome and soaring towers are visible from afar and are defining elements of Tirana’s modern skyline.

The church’s interior is breathtaking: gilded iconostasis, beautiful frescoes, and huge chandeliers create a devotional atmosphere. Among the decorations following Albanian Orthodox traditions, national motifs have also found their place, showcasing the richness of Albanian Christian heritage. The large image behind the main altar depicts Christ’s resurrection with stunning detail and color splendor.

The cathedral is not only a religious center but also hosts cultural events. Concerts, exhibitions, and community programs are regularly organized here. It is open to visitors.

Tirana Park

The city’s largest park is popular among locals as well.

The park was established in the early 20th century and has been continuously expanded and beautified over the decades. Today it spans several hundred hectares and offers diverse landscapes: huge grassy areas, dense forested sections, lakes, and carefully maintained flower gardens alternate with each other. In the heart of the park is an artificial lake where you can go boating, and walking paths wind around the lake.

The park’s specialty is that it houses numerous smaller cultural and historical monuments. Here you can find, for example, the Martyrs’ Cemetery, where victims of World War II were buried, as well as several statues and monuments that commemorate important events in Albania’s history.

New Bazaar

Tirana’s vibrant commercial center where traditional Albanian marketing meets modern urban life.

The bazaar is located in the southern part of the city and is one of the most important centers of local trade. Here you’ll find one of the largest farmers’ markets, where farmers from surrounding villages come with fresh vegetables, fruits, and local specialties. The bazaar offers the finest Albanian cheeses, homemade meat products, and traditional Albanian sweets.

Around the market, there are numerous traditional restaurants where authentic Albanian dishes are prepared from freshly purchased ingredients. The bazaar is liveliest in the morning, which is the best time to visit.

Ura e Tabakëve

One of Tirana’s most elegant and trendiest neighborhoods.

The name means „Bridge over the tobacco factories” which refers to the neighborhood’s industrial past. The area has recently undergone significant development and has now become one of the city’s most sought-after residential and entertainment districts. Along the wide boulevards, modern residential buildings, office buildings, and shopping centers line up.

The neighborhood is famous for its nightlife and gastronomic offerings. Here you’ll find Tirana’s most exclusive restaurants, bars, and clubs, which are favorite meeting places for local youth and international audiences.

Its specialty is that some of the old industrial buildings have been converted into cultural centers and art galleries, while new buildings represent modern architectural solutions.

National Historical Museum

Albania’s largest and most important museum presents the country’s rich history from prehistoric times to the present day.

The museum building is located on the north side of Skanderbeg Square and is recognizable from afar by the huge mosaic on its facade, which depicts key moments in Albanian history. The artwork titled „The Albanians” is a symbol of national identity and pride, and one of Tirana’s most iconic sights.

The museum’s collection is extremely rich and diverse: Illyrian archaeological finds, medieval manuscripts, Ottoman period artifacts, documents from the national independence movement, and 20th-century historical objects can all be found.

The museum places special emphasis on presenting the communist era as well. This period is presented with critical analysis, which helps understand the formation of modern Albania and the significance of the democratic transition.

Bunk’Art 1 and 2

Tirana’s most unique museums are housed in the underground bunker system of the communist dictatorship.

Bunk’Art 1 is a huge nuclear bunker built for Enver Hoxha and the communist elite, located in the city’s outskirts at the foot of Mount Dajti. The complex built in the 1970s consists of more than 100 rooms and was used until 1991. Today it operates as a museum, showcasing the atmosphere of paranoia and fear that characterized communist Albania.

Bunk’Art 2 is located in the city center and presents the operation of the secret police. (I’ll describe this below.)

Both museums provide shocking insights into one of the darkest periods of Albanian history. The atmosphere of the bunkers and the exhibited materials together provide a powerful experience that helps understand the past.

Secret Police Museum

The museum located in the former building of the communist era’s secret police, the Sigurimi, documents the history of political oppression.

The building itself has historical significance: this is where the regime’s political opponents were held, where interrogations took place, and where the intelligence center operated. The museum’s goal is to show the operation of the totalitarian state and the violations committed against citizens. The exhibition can be viewed in an authentic environment, in the original interrogation rooms and cells.

The museum’s collection encompasses a wide range of documents, photographs, surveillance equipment, and personal objects. Visitors can learn about the Sigurimi’s organizational structure, operating methods, and how it penetrated daily life. Particularly moving are the personal stories of political prisoners and documents of family separations.

Mount Dajti

Tirana’s favorite excursion destination offers stunning panoramas of the capital.

The 1,613-meter-high mountain is located just 25 kilometers from Tirana and is easily accessible by car or the Dajti Express cable car. During the 15-minute cable car ride, wonderful views open up of the city and surrounding mountains, and at the top of the mountain, additional hiking trails and attractions await visitors.

In the mountain’s forested areas, hikers and nature photographers can discover the rich flora and fauna. In winter, you can ski on certain parts of the mountain, while in summer, the cool mountain air provides refuge from urban heat. Several restaurants and cafés operate at the top.

Tirana has a Mediterranean continental climate, which includes warm, dry summers and mild, rainy winters.

Spring (March-May): Spring is pleasantly warm and gradually sunnier. The average temperature ranges between 12-22°C, and precipitation is moderate. April and May are particularly attractive for exploring the city’s green areas.

Summer (June-August): Summer is hot and dry, with average temperatures ranging between 20-30°C. Precipitation is minimal, but occasionally heavy showers can occur. This season is ideal for outdoor programs and exploring Mount Dajti.

Skopje

The capital of North Macedonia boasts a long and varied historical past.

It was an important city of the Ottoman Empire. We can still discover traces of this era in architectural monuments, such as in the old town, where mosques, hammams, and bazaars can be found. In 1963, a devastating earthquake destroyed a significant part of the city. During reconstruction, Skopje received a modern facade.

Its central square is Macedonia Square (Plostad Makedonija), which is surrounded by huge statues and impressive buildings. Here you can find the equestrian statue of Alexander the Great, which is one of North Macedonia’s most recognizable modern symbols.

Lake Ohrid

Located at the Albanian border, this lake is one of the world’s oldest and deepest lakes, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

It is approximately 30 km long and 15 km wide, with its deepest point at 288 meters. Its ecosystem is extremely unique, with numerous plant and animal species that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The most famous of these is the Ohrid trout.

Ohrid

One of North Macedonia’s most beautiful and visited cities is the center of Lake Ohrid’s eastern shore.

The city is often called the „Jerusalem of the Balkans” as it once had 365 churches, one for each day of the year. Due to its historical significance and natural beauty, Ohrid and Lake Ohrid are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

The city’s most famous symbol is the Church of St. John at Kaneo, which sits on a cliff above Lake Ohrid. The Monastery of Saint Clement and Saint Panteleimon was built on the site of ancient Lychnidos and is one of the most important centers of Orthodox Christianity. Mavrovo National Park

North Macedonia’s largest and one of its most beautiful national parks is located in the Bistra Mountains.

Its central feature is Lake Mavrovo. The artificial lake was created by damming the Radika River and is one of the national park’s main attractions. With its crystal-clear water, it’s ideal for fishing and boating.

The Mavrovo ski center within the park is one of the country’s largest ski resorts, suitable for skiing, snowboarding, and other winter sports. It also has many marked hiking trails, making it perfect for hiking.

Bitola

One of North Macedonia’s oldest and most important cities lies near the Greek border.

Its history spans more than 2000 years. In ancient times, it was known as Heraclea Lyncestis, founded by Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. During Ottoman rule (14th century – 1912), Bitola became an important regional center. In the 19th century, the city became known as a cultural and diplomatic center during the Ottoman reform period, hence its nickname „City of Consuls”.

In the city center is the Širok Sokak, or Main Street. The street is lined with beautiful 19th and 20th-century buildings that blend Ottoman and European architectural styles. One of the city’s most important symbols is the Clock Tower (Saat Kula). The Ishak Beg Mosque is one of the largest and most impressive Ottoman mosques.

Kokino Megalithic Observatory

One of North Macedonia’s most unique archaeological sites, often mentioned among the world’s most significant prehistoric astronomical observation sites.

Discovered in 2001, it has since become an important research site for archaeoastronomy. Research suggests the site was established around 1800 BC and was used until the Bronze Age (7th century BC). The observatory was primarily used by local inhabitants for astronomical observations and religious ceremonies.

Through openings cut into the rocks, prehistoric people could precisely determine the timing of summer and winter solstices, as well as autumn and spring equinoxes. Another interesting feature is that they also tracked lunar cycles.

Saint Naum Monastery

One of the country’s most beautiful and important religious and historical sites is located on the southern shore of Lake Ohrid, near the Albanian border.

The monastery was built by Saint Naum, one of the founders of Slavic literacy and Christianity, in 905 AD. He was a disciple of Cyril and Methodius, who created the Glagolitic and Cyrillic scripts. After his death, he was buried in the monastery, and his tomb remains one of the site’s most sacred places.

The monastery’s architectural style follows Orthodox traditions but has undergone numerous modifications over the centuries. Its center is the monastery church, where frescoes depict scenes from Saint Naum’s life and biblical stories.

Markovi Kuli

Marko’s Towers is an excellent attraction for medieval history and hiking enthusiasts.

The ruins are located in the Pelagonia region, near the city of Prilep, atop a steep rock formation at approximately 120-180 meters in height. It offers magnificent views of the surroundings.

The fortress was once under the rule of medieval King Marko, after whom it was named. The fortress was surrounded by thick walls and watchtowers, serving as one of the region’s most impressive defense systems. Although the fortress lost its significance after the Turkish conquest, its ruins still remind us of the region’s turbulent history.

Stobi Archaeological Site

It preserves the remains of one of North Macedonia’s most important and best-preserved ancient cities and is a World Heritage site.

The ancient city of Stobi was a significant center during the Roman, later Byzantine, and early Christian periods. The city was particularly known as a seat of Roman emperors and Christian bishops, and its Christian churches and buildings served as important religious centers for the contemporary Balkans.

Numerous buildings and ornate monuments have been uncovered during excavations. The Roman forum, which was a social and political center, is located in the city center. The Roman-style theater is one of the city’s most impressive monuments. There are several temples dedicated to Roman gods such as Jupiter, Neptune, and Hera.

Treskavec Monastery

One of North Macedonia’s most important religious sites is located in the Bregalnica River valley.

It was built at the end of the 12th century during Byzantine rule. The name probably comes from the Latin word „tres” (three), as there are three rocks surrounding the monastery. It reached its greatest flourishing in the 14th and 15th centuries when it became one of the important religious centers of the local Christian community.

The monastery’s church is dedicated to Saint Mary, with its interior decorated with painted iconostasis and frescoes. Several famous religious figures rest in the sanctuary.

Tara National Park

One of Serbia’s most beautiful natural areas is located in the western part of the country, near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

One of the park’s most iconic sights is the deep Drina Canyon, one of Europe’s deepest and most beautiful river bends. The clear, emerald-green water of the river and the panorama from the Banjska Stena viewpoint offer a spectacular view.

The park has more than 200 km of marked hiking trails. You can also explore Lake Perućac and the Rača Monastery.

Novi Sad

Serbia’s second-largest city and the capital of the autonomous province of Vojvodina. It’s often called the „Serbian Athens” due to its artistic and educational significance.

Studenica Monastery

One of Serbia’s most important religious and historical sites is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The monastery was founded at the end of the 12th century by Stefan Nemanja I, the founder of the medieval Serbian state, who lived here as a monk at the end of his life. Studenica was the family monastery of the Nemanjić dynasty, and several kings, including Stefan Nemanja himself, are buried here.

Its central building is the Church of the Virgin Mary, built at the end of the 12th century. Its white marble facade and Byzantine-style domes represent the pinnacle of Serbian medieval architecture.

Iron Gate Gorge

One of the most spectacular and largest gorges of the Danube, located on the border of Serbia and Romania, where the Carpathians meet the Balkan Mountains.

The gorge is part of Đerdap National Park. It’s divided into four smaller sections: Golubac Gorge, Gospoda Gorge, Kazan Gorge, and Sip Gorge. The Kazan Gorge is the narrowest and most picturesque section, where the Danube winds between rock walls.

Golubac Fortress, a medieval fortress at the entrance to the gorge, is an iconic attraction of the Iron Gate. It’s beautifully restored and offers fantastic views of the river. Other notable attractions include Trajan’s Plaque and the Decebalus Rex rock sculpture.

Niš

Serbia’s third-largest city is located in the southeastern part of the country.

It was an important city of the Roman Empire. Emperor Constantine I, who made Christianity the state religion, was born here. During the Middle Ages, the city was an important fortress for the Byzantine Empire and later for the Serbian Kingdom.

Its main attraction is the Niš Fortress in the center. Built in the 18th century in Ottoman style, it was constructed on the remains of Roman and medieval fortifications. Today the fortress houses parks, museums, and cultural events.

One of its most haunting historical memorials is the Skull Tower (Cele-kula). After the battle of 1809, the Ottomans built a tower from the skulls of Serbian rebels to deter insurgents. The tower now serves as a museum.

Đavolja Varoš

„The Devil’s Town” is one of Serbia’s most unique natural wonders, famous for its incredible geological formations.

The area features 202 natural stone pillars that are 2-15 meters high with diameters ranging from 0.5-3 meters. These pillars support stone blocks of various sizes on their tops, creating a unique and impressive sight.

There are two special springs here with high mineral content. The Devil’s Water (Voda Đavolja) is highly acidic with extremely high mineral content. The Red Spring (Crveno Vrelo) gets its name from the iron in the water, which gives the spring and its surroundings a reddish color.

Šabac

This city on the Sava River near the Bosnian border is an important historical and cultural center.

It became a strategically important fortress in the 15th century. Under Ottoman rule, it became an important military and commercial center. In the early 19th century, during the Serbian uprisings, it played a key role in the independence struggles.

One of its most significant institutions is the Macva Museum. It presents the history of Šabac and the cultural heritage of the Macva region. The permanent exhibitions span from Roman times to the modern era.

Its famous event is the Šabac Fair. This annual fair is one of the largest and most famous in Serbia, attracting tens of thousands of visitors.

Vrnjačka Banja

One of Serbia’s most famous and popular resorts is located at the foot of the Kopaonik Mountains.

Kopaonik National Park

Sunny Beach

Bulgaria’s most famous place, attracting more and more tourists year after year.

The Sunny Beach area refers to the bay between Nessebar and Sveti Vlas. Along the approximately 8 km long, Blue Flag certified beach, there are countless restaurants, hotels, bars, discos, and nightclubs, often referred to as the new Ibiza.

Sozopol

Located not far from Burgas, this settlement, along with Nessebar, is one of the oldest cities in Bulgaria.

It emerged from the Greek city-state of Apollonia and was a thriving trading city from ancient times until the 17th century. It was known as a wine-producing and fishing town and was an important port for the transshipment of grain from Thrace. From ancient times until the first quarter of the 20th century, Sozopol was a predominantly Greek-populated city.

It is characterized by 19th-century Bulgarian-style houses. The old houses built of wood and stone may be included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in the future.

Sofia

Bulgaria’s capital is located in the western part of the country and is considered Europe’s oldest capital.

Tsarevets Fortress

Located in the city of Veliko Tarnovo, it was one of the most significant fortifications as the capital of the medieval Second Bulgarian Empire.

The fortress was built on a high hill, which provided natural protection along with the city below and the Yantra River. It was surrounded by thick stone walls stretching for three kilometers. The walls contained several gates and towers.

Inside the fortress stood the Bulgarian Tsar’s residence, where the imperial government ruled the country. At its top is the former Patriarchal Cathedral, which was the center of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. The cathedral also functioned as the religious center of the empire.

Plovdiv

Bulgaria’s second-largest city is located in the central part of the country, on both banks of the Maritsa River.

The old town, built on hills with renovated pedestrian streets, is famous for its buildings in the so-called Bulgarian Renaissance style. These houses, partly built of wood, are meant to symbolize Bulgarian self-awareness. The colors and protruding balconies are also eye-catching: based on the richness of the interiors, decorations, valuable furniture, carpets, and frescoes, the owners of the houses were wealthy merchants of the 19th century.

Plovdiv’s emblematic monument is the amphitheater and ancient theater, the largest outdoor Roman facility in present-day Bulgaria. Its construction began in the 2nd century during the reign of Emperor Trajan. It’s a masterpiece of Roman architecture.

Rila Monastery

It’s the most popular and considered the holiest shrine of Bulgaria and the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. The monastery in the Rila Mountains is surrounded by picturesque forests.

Its history began in the 10th century when St. John of Rila, the patron saint of Bulgarians, retreated to hermitage in the area, and after his death, his followers founded a monastery. It became a cultural center during the Turkish era. In 1976, it was declared a national historical site, and in 1983, UNESCO added it to the World Heritage List.

The four-story monastery buildings contain about 300 monastic cells. A real specialty is the huge, octagonal kitchen in the northern wing of the monastery, which has a ceiling height of 22 meters.

One of the pride of the museum in the southern wing is the intricately carved 14th-century door of the Hrelja Church, as well as the Raphael Cross. The latter is named after Brother Raphael from the 18th century, who carved about 104 religious scenes and 650 miniature figures on the wooden cross measuring only 81 x 23 cm over 12 years of persistent work.

Varna

Bulgaria’s third-largest city is located on the Black Sea coast. It’s an important tourist destination, commercial and cultural center.

Its most spectacular monument is the Orthodox cathedral, whose predecessor was built in the 15th century and expanded in the 17th century. In Dzharnavara Park, there are also ruins of an ancient basilica.

Varna’s museums are also famous. These include the Varna Archaeological Museum, the aquarium, and the dolphinarium established in 1984, which was the largest in the world when it was built. On the outskirts of the city stands the memorial park of the Battle of Varna.

It’s worth visiting the Euxinograd Palace, 8 km away. The late 19th-century building’s style evokes the atmosphere of French castles. United Bulgaria was proclaimed here in 1885.

Belogradchik Rocks

This wonderful natural formation is located in northwestern Bulgaria, near the town of Belogradchik.

They are about 200 million years old formations consisting of sandstone, conglomerate, and limestone. Over millions of years, erosion and natural forces have created special shapes that have been given names. These include the „Horseman”, the „Monks”, and the „Bear”.

The reddish color of the rocks, their shapes, and the surrounding green forests, as well as the Balkan Mountains in the background, create a wonderful landscape.

Perperikon

The archaeological site is one of the most significant historical monuments in the region.

Perperikon has been inhabited for thousands of years. Its oldest parts date back to the Bronze Age and served as a religious and cultural center for the Thracians.

The excavated structures include ancient palaces, water reservoirs, and a large temple built after the spread of Christianity. Many important objects have been found during excavations, including ceramics, coins, weapons, and other antiquities.

Its most famous part is a large sanctuary carved into a rock, which is the largest such structure in the region. The altar, used by the Thracians for their religious ceremonies, was particularly famous for stories related to prophecies.

Ovech Fortress

The fortress near the town of Provadia has a history spanning more than a millennium. It played an important role for various civilizations as a military and administrative center.

It stands on a rocky plateau surrounded by steep walls. The fortress’s strategic importance stems from its easy defensibility and its view of the surrounding areas, including the Provadia Valley.

The fortress was first used by the Thracians, then later occupied by the Romans, Byzantines, and medieval Bulgarian states. In the 11th century, it became one of the important military centers of the Byzantine Empire. Later, in the 13-14th centuries, it gained new significance during the Second Bulgarian Empire.

One of the most spectacular elements leading to the fortress is a long bridge built on rock and a staircase carved into stone, which was one of its most important entrances.

Prohodna Cave

The cave located in the gorge of the Iskar River is popular among hikers, cavers, and tourists due to its special formations.

The cave got its name from its two large natural openings that create a long, tunnel-like passage, as if we were walking through a „corridor”. One opening is called the Small Entrance, and the other is called the Large Entrance. The total length of the cave is about 262 meters.

Its most famous and special part is two huge natural windows on the cave’s ceiling, which locals call „The Eyes of God”. These holes are positioned as if forming the eyes of a giant face, especially when sunlight filters through them.

Etar

The open-air ethnographic museum aims to showcase Bulgarian folk culture, craftsmanship, and lifestyle, especially from the period of the Bulgarian Revival in the 18th-19th centuries.

There are more than 50 buildings, including residential houses, workshops, and water mills. The buildings follow the 18th-19th century Bulgarian architectural style, characterized by houses made of wood and stone, as well as the rich decorations of the Bulgarian Revival period.

The most popular attractions of the museum are the craft workshops. These faithfully demonstrate the crafts of the era, such as pottery, woodcarving, blacksmithing, weaving, cloth making, silversmithing, and bread baking.

Bansko

One of the country’s most popular winter resorts is located near Pirin National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Its ski center is one of the most modern and well-equipped winter resorts in Southeast Europe. The ski area is over 70 kilometers long in total, with the highest slopes located at an altitude of 2600 meters.

Bansko is not just about skiing, but also has a rich historical past. The city was one of the important centers of culture and economy during the Bulgarian Revival period. It’s famous for traditional Bulgarian folk music and folklore festivals.

Bezbog Lake

This beautifully situated lake is located close to Bansko and is frequently visited by nature lovers, hikers, and photographers.

It’s located at an altitude of about 2240 meters above sea level. A lift starts from the nearby Gotse Delchev shelter, taking visitors to the Bezbog shelter. From here, the lake can be reached by a short walk.

You can walk through narrow alleys within the 25-meter high city walls, where many cafes and restaurants are hidden. And for a fantastic view, take the cable car from the old town to the top of the mountain.

Korčula

Did you know that Marco Polo was born here in 1254? At least according to local lore, though there’s no evidence of this. But this shows it’s not just any Croatian place!

The island, located between Makarska and Dubrovnik, has a center, the town of the same name, that is a must-see! The town is also known as ‘Little Dubrovnik’ due to its similarly stunning old town by the sea.

Especially during summer, you can often see programs organized around the Moreška sword dance. This tradition, with its fast rhythm, is now only visible in this region of the Mediterranean and is a popular attraction.

Zadar

It should be noted that here too, there is a peninsula with a wonderful old town built on it.

Earlier, when mentioning Makarska, I referred to the island of Brač. One of the most beautiful and well-known Croatian beaches is located there.

On the southern part of the island, the “Golden Horn” beach is an iconic image of Croatia. The pebble beach extends in a triangle shape into the sea, offering a magnificent view.

Zagreb

The Croatian capital is conveniently located on the way to the Adriatic Sea, making it a perfect city tour destination!

The Upper Town and Kaptol Hill house Zagreb’s historical memories, where almost all the sights can be found. The most beautiful building is the cathedral, one of the finest Gothic churches in Europe. It has a Hungarian connection, as it was built by King Ladislaus I.

Split

The second largest city in Croatia is one of the centers of the Adriatic. Its historic old town is located within the walls of the former Diocletian’s Palace. The ancient palace, built around 300 AD, was constructed by the Roman Emperor Diocletian, where he lived after his abdication. It has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979.

The city is famous for its seaside promenade, the Riva. The street is filled with shops, restaurants, bars, and beautiful palm trees.

Split is also an important transportation hub. It is the easiest point from which to reach the islands of Hvar and Brac. Many consider that the most beautiful part of the Croatian Adriatic, including Makarska and Dubrovnik, begins south of the city.

Trogir

The town near Split is actually located on a small island between the island of Čiovo and the mainland. Its surroundings feature numerous picturesque bays. The historical city center is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The old town developed within the city walls built between the 13th and 15th centuries. The main parts of its defensive system are the Kamerlengo Fortress and the St. Mark’s Tower. The Kamerlengo Fortress is located in the southwestern part of the island, with St. Mark’s Tower to the south.

In the main square of the town stands the St. Lawrence Cathedral, built in Romanesque-Gothic style. Its main portal, created by Master Radovan in 1240, is the most valuable architectural sculpture in Dalmatia.

Motovun

In Istria, not only the coastlines and coastal towns are the main attractions, but also a town built on a hilltop in the middle of the peninsula.

Above the colorful houses on the hillside, a fortress stands on the top, whose walls were already standing in the 13th century. Their length is 436 meters, and their height varies between 9 and 15 meters.

Travel guides often mention Sarajevo as one of the few cities in the world where a Catholic and Orthodox church, a mosque, and a synagogue can be found within a few hundred meters of each other.

Jahorina

Rich in culture due to its long and varied history, Banja Luka has several museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Bosanska Krajina Museum, and the Ethnographic Museum.

The most famous cultural landmark is the Banski Dvor or the Ban’s Palace. Built in 1930 as a residence for the Bans of the Vrbas Banovina, it now houses the national council.

Tara Canyon

Located on the border between Bosnia and Montenegro, the Tara River has carved a beautiful canyon.

Jajce Waterfall

The waterfall forms at the confluence of the Pliva Lake and the Vrbas River, plunging 30 meters down. Its beauty is such that it inspired Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka to paint it and was even voted one of the world’s 12 most beautiful waterfalls.

Pocitelj

Located south of Mostar on the banks of the Neretva River, Pocitelj is like a living open-air museum.

Its reconstruction, completed in the early 2000s, allows many historical buildings to be seen in their original form. Key attractions include the Ali Pasha Mosque, the Sisman-Ibrahim Pasha Mosque, the Gavran Kapetanovic House, and the Sahat-kula clock tower.

Climbing the towers on the hill is highly recommended for a magnificent view of the buildings and the Neretva River below.

Travnik

Situated between Sarajevo and Banja Luka, Travnik’s history dates back to Roman times.

Its most famous landmark is the medieval castle, which became Bosnia’s most important city during the Ottoman era, earning it the nickname „Vezir City.”

The Šarena or „Colorful Mosque,” one of the country’s most beautiful mosques, is located here, which once housed a bazaar on its ground floor.

Trebinje

This small town in Bosnia’s southernmost tip, close to Dubrovnik, was spared from the ravages of war, preserving its original townscape.

Ostrog Monastery

This Serbian Orthodox church is located between Podgorica and Niksic and is Montenegro’s most popular pilgrimage site and one of the most visited churches in the Balkans.

Built in the 17th century into a cliff by the Bishop of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Saint Basil of Ostrog, it’s where he also died, and his body is still kept in the monastery.

The drive there is beautiful, with great views from the serpentine road, and the road quality is pretty good, making the ascent easy.

Budva

Another tourism stronghold of Montenegro, alongside Kotor. Besides natural beauty, such as islands and picturesque coastlines, Budva is rich in historical memories.

The old town lies on a small peninsula and is a cradle of cultural heritage. Narrow streets intersect with small squares and famous buildings like the Holy Trinity Church, housing the tomb of writer Stjepan Mitrov Ljubisa, and the churches of Sv. Ivan, Sv. Bogorodica, and Sv. Sava.

Gospa od Škrpjela Church

Legend has it that Kotor sailors threw a rock into the sea after each successful voyage as thanks to God, eventually forming this small island.

This legend is celebrated every July 22nd, the feast day of Madonna, the island’s patron saint.

The small museum inside the church is worth a visit to learn about the island’s history.

Long Beach (Velika plaža)

In Montenegro’s south, near the Albanian border, stretches the country’s longest Adriatic beach.

Near Ulcinj town, the coastal strip is about 10 km long. Its advantage is the fine (grey) sandy and shallow shoreline, ideal for families with small children.

The further you go from Ulcinj, the quieter the beach becomes. The farthest part of the beach is near Bojana Island, close to the Albanian border, where tranquility is accompanied by a few restaurants and not much else.

Perast

Though we might be inclined to declare Kotor as the most beautiful town in the Bay of Kotor, Perast could also claim this title!

The aforementioned Church Island and the neighboring Saint George (Sveti Dorde) Island both belong to the town, each an integral part of Perast. I didn’t group the church and the town together because each, individually, is one of Montenegro’s most beautiful places.

Perast is a truly peaceful little town, especially since car traffic is restricted in the summer, allowing pedestrians to leisurely explore the attractions.

Njegos Mausoleum (Lovcen National Park)

It’s rare to find a mausoleum on the highest mountain of a national park. Well, in Montenegro, you can experience this!

Located near Kotor on a mountain peak, it is the burial place of the famous philosopher-poet Petar Petrović-Njegos, a significant figure in Montenegrin history, making it a popular site for locals.

Besides, the panorama from the peak, over 1700 meters high, is a must-see! You can see the Bay of Kotor, reach views into Albania, and allegedly, on a very clear day, even Italy.

Be prepared for a bit of a climb though: nearly 500 steps to reach this breathtaking view.

Skadar Lake (Shkodrai Lake)

The largest lake on the Balkan Peninsula stretches into Albania.

Especially its northern part, near Podgorica, is canyon-like, offering several spots for stunning views. One of the most accessible viewpoints is Pavlova Strana, where the river flowing from the lake resembles the Danube Bend.

The lake is a rich habitat for wildlife, being one of Europe’s richest bird reserves, home to about 270 species, making it a great spot for bird watching.

Lipa Cave

Located not far from the main road between Budva and Podgorica, near the village of Lipa, this cave offers a 2.5 km trek underground, where they even organize music concerts.

The well-developed cave features various sizes and shapes of stalactites and stalagmites, similar to Aggtelek, with excellent guided tours.

Durmitor National Park

A bit off the beaten path, close to the Serbian-Bosnian border, this is considered one of Montenegro’s most beautiful areas!

The Durmitor peak is the country’s highest point (2523 m). The central area of the massif is formed by the Tara, Draga, and Sušica rivers and their deep canyons.

Piva Canyon

At the foot of Dormitor, stretching north-south, lies the Piva River and its dammed lake.

The castle hill, steeply rising on the right bank of the Osum river, is surrounded by outer walls and fortifications from the rule of the Despot of Epirus, Michael I, in the 13th century, which remain in good condition. Once home to over thirty Eastern Orthodox churches, today ten remain in nearly original form.

On the hillside, in the Mangalem district by the Osum river, characteristic white residential houses can be seen, along with the Bachelor’s Mosque. On the other side of the Osum, the picturesque Gorica district features the Cathedral of Saint Spyridon.

Llogara Pass

The pass creates a connection between the Vlorë Bay area and the Albanian Riviera, at an elevation of 1027 meters above sea level.

Along the road, restaurants and panoramic terraces offer views towards the Albanian Riviera. On clear days, Corfu is also visible.

Apollonia

As an important city of ancient Illyria, it’s one of Albania’s most significant archaeological sites.

It was one of the most important cities in the southern part of ancient Illyria between the 7th century BC and the 6th century AD. At its height, the city, along with Epidamnos to the north, played a dominant role in the economic, social, and cultural life of the Illyrian territories for a millennium.

Today, it’s a ruin, including the medieval Monastery of Saint Mary and the Archaeological Museum of Apollonia, which houses a collection of statues, busts, stelae, and weapons unearthed during excavations.

Saranda

Located on the amphitheater-like bay between the Ionian Sea, Cape of Qefali, and the Ksamili Peninsula.

Albania has the highest number of sunny hours per year here, exceeding 2900 hours, making the city and its surroundings increasingly popular among tourists.

The Lëkurësi Castle is situated within the city limits. The hilltop castle ruins feature round towers, beautiful views, and a restaurant.

Ksamil

Located south of Saranda, this village has undergone rapid development recently.

Butrint Archaeological Park

Situated 17 kilometers south of Saranda, it encompasses the ruins of the ancient city of Buthrotum, along with Venetian period buildings.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it stands out not only for its historical and cultural significance but also for its natural beauty.

Influenced by various civilizations, including the Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines, notable remains include the amphitheater, Roman baths, medieval basilica, and the famous Lion Gate.

Blue Eye Spring

This popular tourist attraction’s clear, blue water emerges from a pool more than fifty meters deep.

The force of the water is such that in the center of the spring, it rises 10-15 cm. If a stone is thrown into the center, it does not sink immediately but drifts to the side before sinking.

The spring’s surroundings are a protected area, with oak and sycamore trees, among about twenty other springs.

Durrës

Located on the Adriatic Sea plain, opposite the Italian port cities of Brindisi and Bari.

The city’s several kilometers long sandy beach has been discovered by tourists, so there’s a lot of activity in Durrës during the summer. Its proximity to Tirana makes it a popular holiday destination for locals as well.

The biggest attraction is the 2nd-century Roman amphitheater, discovered entirely by accident in the 20th century. The amphitheater has been partially excavated, revealing an ornately mosaicked chapel underneath the spectator stands in its entirety.

Theth National Park

Spanning 2,630 hectares, this national park is located in the geographical region of the Shala Valley, between the eastern and western ridges of the Albanian Alps in the northwest.

Its natural treasures, including continuous hornbeam-oak forests and beech forests, caves, waterfalls, glacial lakes, and the Grunasi canyon, make it a favorite destination for mountain tourism and hiking in Albania.

The central area of Theth and its parts, Fushë-Theth and Gjeçaj, offer accommodations, restaurants, and excellent sports opportunities for visitors.

Shkodra

One of the oldest and most important cities in northern Albania, surrounded by Lake Skadar and several 1,500-meter-high mountains.

Its main feature is the Rozafa Castle, dating back to Illyrian times but in its current form is medieval. It has a long history, blending architectural features from various periods, and has been home to numerous conquerors over the centuries. Inspired by a legend that a woman, Rozafa, was walled alive into the castle’s walls to strengthen them.

Also worth visiting are the 18th-century bazaar and the Lead Mosque at the foot of the castle hill, as well as the country’s largest Catholic church, the Saint Stephen’s Cathedral, in the city center.

Dajti Mountain

Located east of Tirana, it is one of the country’s most popular natural attractions as part of the Dajti National Park, making the mountain and its surroundings a popular excursion spot.

Dajti Mountain is also known as „Tirana’s Balcony” because of the spectacular view of the city and surrounding area it offers. The easiest way to reach the mountain’s summit is via the Dajti Ekspres cable car, offering a unique experience even on the way up.

Another attraction is Lake Bovilla, a man-made reservoir initially intended to supply drinking water to the Tirana region but has become a beautiful natural attraction with its surrounding mountains and rich vegetation.

Kruja

Located 20 km from the capital, this small town stands out for its historical significance.

Kruja Castle is a national symbol of the Albanian people: the birthplace and military headquarters of the 15th-century hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, who repelled Ottoman forces for nearly thirty years.

Its historical landmarks include almost entirely walkable medieval castle walls, a 20th-century restored citadel, and a 19th-century bazaar with narrow streets.

Valbona Valley National Park

The 8,000-hectare national park is located in northern Albania, within the steep Valbona River valley, nestled between the eastern highlands of the Albanian Alps. Along with Theth National Park, it is a favorite destination for mountain tourism in Albania.

Its diverse natural environment, valley and hiking trails nestled between monumental mountains, crystal-clear water, and mountain air, along with the valley’s relative isolation from major roads, make it a popular destination.

The most visited spots include the Rragam pine forest, the Vranica beech forest, Lake Xhema, and the Valbona and Shoshan springs, as well as the Dragobia Cave.
