Nordkette

Bergisel Ski Jump

The hill rising on Innsbruck’s southern edge has been one of the city’s symbols for centuries; once a battlefield of the Tyrolean war of independence, it is today crowned by an iconic work of modern sports architecture.

The current ski jump was designed by Zaha Hadid and opened in 2002, on the site of an earlier jump that had stood there since 1927. The slender concrete tower is 50 meters tall; the viewing terrace can be reached by elevator or by climbing 455 steps, and from there a stunning view opens up not only over the jump itself but over the whole city and the Karwendel mountains.

Ambras Castle

The attraction was dreamed up by multimedia artist André Heller in 1995, for the hundredth anniversary of the Swarovski company. The grass-covered giant’s head guarding the entrance has since become the symbol of the site, and inside it hides around seventeen so-called Chambers of Wonder, each designed in a distinctive style by international artists.

The crystal cloud in the garden, made up of more than eight hundred thousand hand-set crystals, along with André Heller’s hand-shaped labyrinth, are among the most popular photo spots. The site is also home to one of the largest Swarovski stores in the world.

Hall in Tirol

The old town of this small town, a few kilometers east of Innsbruck, gets undeservedly little attention in the shadow of its larger neighbor, even though its medieval streetscape is one of the best preserved in the province.

In the Middle Ages the town grew rich from nearby salt mines, and in the 15th-16th centuries one of the Habsburg Empire’s most important mints operated here, its building now open to visitors as a museum. The Gothic town hall on the main square and the townhouses with their colorful facades bear witness to the town’s former prosperity.

The imposing tower of St. Nicholas parish church is clearly visible from afar, and inside, Gothic and Baroque elements mingle. Craft shops and cozy cafés line the narrow streets, at a much more relaxed pace than in the province’s tourist-packed capital.

Achensee

Enclosed between the Karwendel and Rofan mountain ranges, this turquoise stretch of water is Tyrol’s largest lake and one of the region’s most popular summer excursion spots, often simply called the Sea of Tyrol.

The lake, about 9 kilometers long and 133 meters deep, has exceptionally clear water, in places almost of drinking-water quality, which is why divers and lovers of underwater scenery like to visit. The villages of Pertisau, Maurach and Achenkirch on its shores are popular summer meeting points for sailors, windsurfers and swimmers.

The lake has been served since 1889 by the historic steam-powered Achenseebahn cog railway from Jenbach, which is a nostalgic experience in itself, while regular boat services on the lake help visitors explore further.

Zugspitze

The Tiroler Zugspitzbahn, starting from the valley station in Ehrwald, carries visitors up to the 2,962-meter summit in just ten minutes, bridging a difference in elevation of nearly 1,700 meters. The first cable car on the mountain opened in 1926, and it has operated in its current, modern form since 1991.

On a clear day, the panoramic terrace at the summit offers views of as many as 400 alpine peaks, while the Faszination Zugspitze experience museum presents the history of climbing the mountain. In winter, the Zugspitzplatt glacier is one of Germany’s highest-lying and snowiest ski areas.

Stubai Glacier

Seefeld lies at an elevation of 1,200 meters, which gives it especially reliable snow and sunshine, and the plateau around the town has more than 250 kilometers of marked cross-country ski trails. The place hosted Olympic cross-country skiing and ski jumping events in both 1964 and 1976, and the Nordic Ski World Championships were held here in 2019.

Lindwurm Statue (Lindwurmbrunnen)

The city’s symbol and most photographed artwork is the monumental dragon statue standing opposite the New Square, which commemorates the medieval Klagenfurt legend. According to the 16th-century tale, a dragon once dwelt in the region, keeping the local inhabitants in terror until a brave knight defeated the monster.

The statue was cast in bronze in 1590 based on Ulrich Vogelsang’s creation, originally using the head of an older artwork. The six-meter-high creature rises from the fountain’s central basin with a fearsome gaping mouth, serpentine body, and wings, protected by an iron railing around it.

According to legend, the city’s name also derives from this dragon (Lindwurm) and the ford (Furt) crossing the marshy area. The sculpture group also includes a Hercules statue added to the composition in 1636, with the mythological hero watching the monster.

Neuer Platz

The city’s central and largest square has formed the heart of Klagenfurt since the 18th century, where the pulse of urban life can be felt most strongly. The square’s defining element is the Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus), built around 1650, which still attracts attention with its impressive baroque facade. In the middle section of the square, the three-story Renaissance building with courtyards, the „Haus zur Goldenen Gans” (Golden Goose House), is particularly noteworthy, with its inner courtyard and arcades offering a fairytale-like sight.

Today it’s a pedestrian zone where elegant boutiques, galleries, and traditional cafés await visitors. The Trinity Column at the southern end of the square is an additional baroque ornament to the environment. Cathedral (Domkirche St. Peter und Paul)

The city’s most important sacred monument, a Catholic cathedral converted from a 16th-century Protestant church, received cathedral status in 1787. The church’s true treasure is the interior space, which dazzles with its richly stuccoed ceiling, monumental main altar, and 18th-century frescoes by Daniel Gran. A special feature of the church is that Giuseppe Bonomo painted magnificent ceiling frescoes here in 1725, depicting biblical scenes. The imposing Diocesan Museum (Diözesanmuseum) on the southern side of the building is worth a separate visit for its ecclesiastical art treasures. Provincial Palace (Landhaus)

The impressive Renaissance complex housing Carinthia’s provincial parliament was built between 1574-1594 and is one of Klagenfurt’s most beautiful secular buildings. The palace’s northern facade is particularly impressive with its two-story arcaded courtyard, one of the finest Alpine examples of Italian Renaissance architecture.

The arcades of the inner courtyard rest on Tuscan and Ionic columns, with walls decorated by numerous coats of arms and stucco ornaments. The building’s most important hall is the Great Hall (Grosser Wappensaal), whose ceiling is decorated with 665 Carinthian noble family coats of arms and hosts representative events.

Joseph Ferdinand Fromiller’s ceiling frescoes from the 1740s are the building’s special art treasures, depicting Carinthia’s history in allegorical scenes. The Landhaus is still a functioning government building but can be visited through guided tours. The area in front of the building is particularly enchanting in autumn when the trees bathe the surroundings in golden colors.

City Parish Church Tower (Stadtpfarrturm)

The city’s highest point and one of its most famous attractions is the independent 91-meter-high bell tower next to the cathedral, built between 1592 and 1604. The late Renaissance-style tower was originally constructed as a standalone structure and was never organically connected to the adjacent Holy Church.

From the viewing terrace inside, a 360-degree panorama unfolds before the visitor: on clear days, you can see all the way to the Karawanks mountain range, Wörthersee, and all of the city’s landmarks. Climbing the 265 steps leading to the tower requires some effort, but the view amply rewards it.

In the middle of the tower is the bell chamber called the Silent Towers (Stummen Türme), where seven historic bells can be seen. The onion dome at the top of the tower was added to the building in the 18th century. Europapark

The nearly 22-hectare city park stretching along the shore of Wörthersee is one of the most popular recreational and leisure areas in Klagenfurt. The park features more than 150 models, all faithful replicas at a 1:25 scale of the world’s most famous buildings, monuments, and technical marvels.

Hours can be spent walking among the tiny masterpieces on the approximately 26,000 square meter site: here you can see New York‘s Statue of Liberty, Paris‘ Eiffel Tower, India‘s Taj Mahal, the Sydney Opera House, or Rome‘s St. Peter’s Basilica. The execution of the models is extremely detailed, with hundreds of thousands of tiny elements composing each structure.

The park’s special feature is that every building was made from original materials, and the construction time for individual models could take several years. Minimundus was founded for a charitable purpose: proceeds are still used today to support children with disabilities. Visitors also encounter interactive elements, such as some railway models that actually operate.

Viktring Cistercian Monastery (Stift Viktring)

Located about 6 kilometers southwest of the city, the former Cistercian abbey is one of Carinthia’s most significant medieval monuments, founded in 1142. The monastery church is a monument of European significance due to its Gothic architecture and especially the fresco cycle created around 1400.

The frescoes covering the walls of the church’s sanctuary and nave are considered the site’s most valuable treasure: they rank among the most significant medieval wall paintings in the Alpine region, depicting biblical scenes in exceptionally fine execution. The freshness of the colors and wealth of detail remains impressive even after more than 600 years.

The monastery complex was dissolved by Joseph II in 1786, most of its buildings were demolished, but the church survived and now functions as a parish church. The former monastery building next to it now houses a museum presenting the history of the Cistercian order and the region’s ecclesiastical history. The church can be visited by prior arrangement or during worship services; the sight of the frescoes alone makes the trip worthwhile.

Carinthian Provincial Museum (Landesmuseum Kärnten)

The museum presenting the province’s history, culture, and natural treasures is one of Klagenfurt’s oldest cultural institutions, founded in 1844. The institution’s modern building, renovated in 2020, is located in the historic center and offers exhibition spaces equipped with the most modern museum technology.

The museum’s permanent exhibition presents Carinthia’s history from the Stone Age to the present day: archaeological finds, ethnographic collections, historical documents, and artworks guide visitors through the millennia. Carinthian Museum of Modern Art (Museum Moderner Kunst Kärnten)

An important institution in the city’s cultural life has been operating since 2003 in the historic city center, in a renovated building. The museum houses Carinthia and Southern Austria’s most significant modern and contemporary art collection, numbering more than 3,000 artworks.

The collection focuses on 20th and 21st-century art: paintings, sculptures, graphic works, photographs, and video art pieces can all be found here. Special attention is given to works by Austrian Expressionists and modern-era works by local Carinthian artists. Works by Maria Lassnig, Arnulf Rainer, and other Austrian art luminaries are also included in the collection.

The museum organizes 6-8 temporary exhibitions annually, featuring both international and regional artists. Klagenfurt weather: when is the best time to visit?

Klagenfurt has a temperate continental climate, influenced by both the proximity of the Alps and the presence of Wörthersee. Four distinct seasons alternate in the city, each with special atmosphere and program possibilities. Due to the lake’s proximity, summer temperatures become more pleasant, while in winter, cold air arriving from the mountains determines the weather.

Spring (March–May):

The spring period is variable; snow showers can still occur in March, but by the end of April, temperatures generally settle around 15-18 degrees Celsius. May is already pleasant, often with values above 20 degrees, when nature blooms in full splendor. Precipitation is moderate, and the number of sunny hours gradually increases.

Summer (June–August):

Summer months are warm but not too hot: daytime temperatures generally range between 24-28 degrees Celsius, rarely exceeding 30 degrees. Wörthersee’s water warms up to 26-28 degrees, providing ideal beach weather. In July and August, brief showers and thunderstorms can be expected occasionally, but these generally pass quickly.

Autumn (September–November):

Austria’s 2nd largest city is the capital of Styria, an important transportation hub along the Mura River.

Bear Gorge (Bärenschützklamm)

The gorge near Mixnitz village is located at the foot of Hochlantsch mountain, north of Graz.

Its special feature is that wooden stairs and bridges lead through the entire gorge, so we can explore this wonderful section along a developed route. It’s more than 1,300 meters long, and we need to overcome an elevation difference of about 350 meters. Along the way, there are more than 50 ladders and 110 bridges.

The gorge entrance can be approached from a large, free parking lot. From here, we reach the ticket building after about a 45-minute walk.

While you don’t need to be an athlete, good stamina is definitely recommended. The many stairs are quite tiring, so if you want to complete it, do some stair training beforehand. 🙂

Riegersburg Castle

Between Graz and the Hungarian border, a medieval castle built on volcanic rock rises above a small town.

The castle has been owned by the Prince of Liechtenstein family since 1822. It currently houses museums, permanent and temporary exhibitions, while the princely family lives at the foot of the castle in a modern house.

The castle can be reached on foot, walking up a steep path, or by elevator. Of its 108 rooms, all but 25 can be visited. It’s typically closed in winter.

Three exhibitions can be found in the castle. The most interesting is the witch museum, where they display legally permitted torture devices and execution methods. In the castle museum, we can learn about the castle’s history, while the weapons museum presents 400 years of military history relating to the region.

Stübing Open-Air Folk Museum

One of Europe’s largest open-air museums, located about 20 kilometers north of Graz in the Stübing valley.

The museum displays more than 100 original buildings from the Austrian provinces. We can see the country’s rural architectural heritage from the Middle Ages right up to the 20th century.

The purpose of its establishment was to preserve the characteristics of Austrian folk architecture, showcasing the lifestyle, traditional agricultural techniques, and local crafts. The buildings are also furnished inside, faithfully reflecting the way of life of the particular era and region.

Admont Abbey

Styria’s oldest monastery is located in a rocky valley in Gesäuse National Park.

It was founded in 1074 by Archbishop-Prince Gebhard of Salzburg. For centuries, it was not only a religious center in Upper Styria but also a center of art and science. In the 19th century, the church burned down due to a fire and was rebuilt in Gothic and Romanesque style based on the model of Regensburg Cathedral.

From a cultural perspective, the abbey’s main attraction is its world-famous Baroque library with 80,000 volumes. Its museum exhibition rooms contain medieval manuscripts and early prints, art objects from the Middle Ages to the present, as well as a natural science collection.

Dachstein

One of Austria’s most famous mountain regions, a popular place for hikers, trekkers, and skiers.

It’s famous for its wonderful panorama, which can also be admired from the Skywalk viewing platform located on the glacier. This is often referred to as Europe’s highest viewing platform.

Naturally, winter sports are the most popular. The region’s ski slopes welcome visitors with excellently maintained runs and modern lifts. Skiing and snowboarding are possible on the glacier year-round, which makes this location unique in Europe.

A special attraction is the Ice Palace (Eispalast), where we can explore an artistically designed ice cave with impressive ice sculptures and creations.

Grüner See

The Green Lake lies in the southern part of the Hochschwab mountain range and is famous for its color and wonderful surroundings.

The small lake, sheltered from the wind, doesn’t form waves on the water surface, so you can see the water well even from a low angle. The light-colored limestone visible on the ground among the grass and small amounts of scattered limestone powder contribute to the brightness underwater. This is how the lake becomes sparkling emerald green.

Its water level varies significantly throughout the year. In winter, the lake’s depth is barely a few meters, but in spring, when the snow melts in the surrounding mountains, the water level rises significantly and can reach 10-12 meters.

Lurgrotte Peggau

One of Austria’s largest and most impressive stalactite caves, about 25 kilometers northeast of Graz, near the settlement of Peggau.

The cave was carved out by the Lurbach stream in the limestone rock and has two entrances: one in Peggau and the other in the village of Semriach. It consists of a complex labyrinth and giant chambers, with stalactites that formed over millions of years.

The temperature inside the cave is relatively constant year-round, moving around 8-10 degrees Celsius, so visiting is pleasant at any time. We can also admire the wonderful stalactite formations as part of a guided tour.

Murau

The town is located along the Mura River. It became known for its historical heritage, excellent beers, and wonderful natural environment.

The finest example of medieval monuments is Murau Castle, rising above the town. The Baroque castle is owned by the Schwarzenberg family. A chapel, prison, and period furnishings can be viewed, and classical music concerts are held in the knights’ hall.

Brewing is an integral part of Murau. The town’s famous brewery, Murauer Bier, produces excellent quality beers thanks to its long history and traditions, which we can also taste at local beer tours and tastings.

Schilcher Wine Road

The Schilcher Wine Road is a route offering a special gastronomic experience in western Styria.

The region is particularly known for a unique grape variety, Blauer Wildbacher, from which the famous Schilcher rosé wine is made. The wine’s characteristic is its strong acidity and special flavor profile, which distinguishes it from other rosé wines.

The wine road leads through wonderful landscapes where we can discover small mountain villages, historic wineries, and local winemakers. The route touches numerous wineries and vineyards.

Piber Lipizzaner Stud Farm

The famous stud farm is one of the most important centers for breeding and raising Lipizzaner horses, representing centuries-old traditions and high-level expertise.

The Lipizzaner is an elegant, medium-sized, mostly white horse breed, particularly suitable for carriage driving and classical dressage. It was originally bred in Slovenia, in the settlement of Lipica, from which its name also derives.

The farm’s goal is to maintain and further develop this special horse breed while showing visitors the history, cultural significance, and breeding methods of Lipizzaner horses.

Bad Blumau

The wellness and spa complex was designed by the famous Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser and stands out for its unique architectural style.

Hofkirche

The court church, built between 1553 and 1563, was commissioned by Emperor Ferdinand I with the purpose of providing a worthy resting place for his grandfather, Emperor Maximilian. However, the church ultimately did not become his tomb, as Maximilian’s earthly remains rest in Wiener Neustadt, so the Hofkirche functions more as an empty cenotaph preserving the emperor’s memory.

Its main attraction is the 28 larger-than-life bronze statues guarding Maximilian’s cenotaph, cast based on designs by the era’s most renowned artists, including Albrecht Dürer. These dark bronze figures—including historical rulers, legendary heroes, and Maximilian’s relatives—create a wonderful atmosphere in the church nave and are stunning examples of Renaissance sculpture. Particularly noteworthy are the statues of King Theodoric and King Arthur of Britain.

Another special feature of the church is the Silberne Kapelle, or Silver Chapel, built by Archduke Ferdinand II for his beloved wife, Philippine Welser. The chapel takes its name from inscriptions rather than its material and forms an intimate, touching contrast to the monumentality of the main church.

Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl)

The city’s most famous symbol is a late Gothic balcony built by Emperor Maximilian around 1500 to watch knightly tournaments and city celebrations taking place below. The balcony gets its name from the 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles covering its roof, which glisten blindingly in the sunlight and appear on every Innsbruck postcard.

The facade of the building beneath the balcony is covered with rich fresco decoration depicting important moments from Maximilian’s life, including his two marriages. Today, a museum on the ground floor presents Maximilian’s life and era in an interactive manner.

Helblinghaus

One of the old town’s most beautiful bourgeois houses, originally a late Gothic building, was adorned with spectacular Rococo-style facade decoration in the 18th century. The stucco decoration covering the house’s exterior walls is almost impossibly rich: garlands of flowers, angels, shell motifs, and plant ornaments cover the light green surface, making the building appear like something from a fairy tale.

Its uniqueness lies in the fact that while the house’s interior preserved its Gothic structure, the facade’s 1730s Baroque renovation completely transformed the building’s external appearance. The original Gothic residential house got its name from Anton Christoph Helbling, who owned the building in the 18th century and commissioned the magnificent stucco decoration that still characterizes the house today.

The building is located in the immediate vicinity of the Golden Roof, so visitors usually view both attractions together. The facade’s elaboration and wealth of detail are unparalleled in Innsbruck and an excellent example of how a medieval core house can be combined with the decorative arts of later periods. The Helblinghaus is now a private residence, so it can only be viewed from the outside, but the facade details alone provide sufficient spectacle. It’s worth taking several minutes to examine the mythological figures and symbolic motifs appearing on the walls.

St. James’s Cathedral

The early 18th-century Baroque cathedral is Innsbruck’s most significant religious building, erected on the ruins of a medieval church after the 1717 earthquake. The building was designed by Johann Jakob Herkomer and built in the era’s most modern Baroque style, with rich fresco decoration and stucco work.

The cathedral’s interior is stunning: the ceiling is covered with magnificent frescoes by Cosmas Damian Asam depicting the life and martyrdom of St. James. Above the main altar hangs Lucas Cranach the Elder’s painting „Maria Hilf” (Mary of Succor), the church’s most treasured possession, which Emperor Maximilian also revered. The altar itself is a monumental Baroque creation that draws all attention with its gilding and sculptural decoration.

The cathedral’s special features include two massive bell towers that are defining elements of Innsbruck’s cityscape, as well as the rich interior decoration representing the pinnacle of Baroque art. The old town’s watchtower, built around 1450, originally functioned as part of the town hall while also serving as an observation tower for early detection of fires and approaching enemies. The 51-meter-high Gothic tower symbolized the city’s defense and pride for centuries and remains one of the old town’s most distinctive structures.

To reach the viewing terrace, you must climb 148 steps up the narrow spiral staircase leading to the tower, but the effort is amply rewarded by the view. The weapons collection and knights’ hall are particularly interesting, but what remains most memorable is probably the view from the walls. The panorama over the valley extends all the way to the Karawanks, and on clear days, we can also see the mountains of neighboring Slovenia.

The walking path to the castle takes about twenty minutes, but there’s also an elevator that takes you directly to the castle courtyard. Several hiking trails are accessible in the area, so nature lovers can easily combine a castle visit with a pleasant walk in the forest.

Grossglockner High Alpine Road

This mountain road is one of Europe’s most spectacular Alpine routes, winding for 48 kilometers through the Hohe Tauern National Park.

The road, running at 2,571 meters above sea level, passes through the mountains with thirty-six bends, and at each turn, a new panorama unfolds before us. The road’s destination is Grossglockner, Austria’s highest peak at 3,798 meters.

Along the way, there are several viewpoints where we can stop to photograph the surroundings or simply enjoy the silence of the mountains. The sight of the Pasterze Glacier is particularly memorable, though unfortunately its size has significantly diminished in recent decades. The mountain wildlife is also abundant; we often see marmots, ibex, and various Alpine plants. The road is only passable during summer months, typically from May to October, and it’s advisable to start early to avoid heavier traffic.

Nockberge National Park

This national park is characterized by gentle, rounded mountain peaks and flowering meadows, with a completely different character from the steep Alpine regions. The „Nocks” are special geological formations that stand out with their soft lines and gentle slopes. The park has twenty hiking trails that invite hikes of varying difficulty.

In summer, the mountain meadows are full of wildflowers, and the air is clean and fresh. The Nockalmstrasse, a panoramic road that touches several viewpoints, runs through the park. Along the way, we can stop in small villages where the traditional Alpine way of life still remains. Some of the local shepherd’s huts have been converted into restaurants where we can taste authentic dishes.

Tscheppa Gorge

The narrow gorge is a popular hiking destination. The Tscheppa stream carved out this rock crevice over millennia, and today wooden bridges and stairs lead into its depths. At the gorge’s narrowest point, it’s only a few meters wide, and the rocks rise more than fifty meters high around us.

The 14.4-kilometer road runs through the Hohe Tauern National Park and leads to several dams, which are Austria’s highest-lying reservoirs. At the end of the road, at 1,933 meters altitude, is the Kölnbrein Dam, Austria’s highest dam.

Walking across the dam, a beautiful view opens up over the turquoise reservoir lake and surrounding mountain peaks. The central settlement of the northwestern arm of Lake Constance is famous for its historical heritage, picturesque lakefront, and charming old town.

Its historical center boasts numerous medieval and Renaissance buildings that have preserved their original form well. One of the most important sights is the Sankt Nikolaus Church, built in the Gothic style in the 1300s. Next to the church is the city’s main square, where the famous Rathaus, or city hall, is located, built in 16th-century Renaissance style.

It is also famous for its flower gardens, especially the beautiful green areas of Bodensee Park and Überlingen’s lakeside garden.

Mainau

This small island is the most beautiful part of Lake Constance, which we can also call the Island of Flowers.

The island is owned by the Swedish Bernadotte family, who landscaped and transformed Mainau into a botanical specialty in the 20th century. Its central building is Mainau Castle, dating from the 18th century and still owned by the Bernadotte family. The castle is baroque in style, with an elegant garden and a picturesque chapel.

Its greatest attraction is the wonderful botanical garden, which shows a different face throughout the year. In spring, thousands of tulips cover the park, in summer roses and tropical plants bloom, while in autumn the dahlia festival creates colorful flower fields.

The tropical section is presented in the palm house, where banana trees, orchids, and other exotic plants can be found. One of the most popular attractions is the butterfly house, one of the largest such facilities in Europe, where hundreds of colorful butterflies can be seen in their natural environment.

Konstanz

The largest and one of the most important cities on Lake Constance is located in southwestern Germany, directly on the Swiss border.

Its historical center has preserved its medieval character well, as it did not suffer significant destruction during World War II. The Konstanz Cathedral (Münster Unserer Lieben Frau) was an important ecclesiastical center for centuries and today still welcomes visitors with impressive interiors and an observation tower.

What might make its name familiar is the Council of Constance held between 1414 and 1418, which had a significant impact on European religious and political life. In memory of this, the iconic Imperia statue stands in the harbor, a huge rotating female figure alluding to the corrupt papacy and power games of the time.

Arbon

The Swiss small town’s history goes back more than 2000 years, as it was known as Arbor Felix in Roman times.
