Eindhoven uniquely blends industrial heritage with contemporary design culture, thanks primarily to the Philips company.

The Netherlands’ fifth-largest city is located near the Belgian border and is one of the most important cities alongside Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Nicknamed the „City of Light”, Eindhoven has become one of the Netherlands’ most dynamic innovation centers. Industrial activity initially focused on textiles and tobacco processing until the Philips light bulb factory was established in 1891. The city suffered significant damage during World War II, which was subsequently repaired.

Sint Catharinakerk

Rising in the heart of the city center, Saint Catherine’s Church is Eindhoven’s most significant religious building and one of its most recognizable symbols. The neo-Gothic style church’s distinctive feature is its approximately 73-meter-high tower, which signals the city center from afar.

The church, consecrated in 1867, was designed by Pierre Cuypers, who was also responsible for creating numerous other Dutch neo-Gothic buildings. The interior space’s imposing vaults, stained glass windows, and richly detailed altar together create a stunning atmosphere. World War II bombings severely damaged the building, but it was carefully restored in the 1950s.

The church not only serves a religious function but also hosts cultural programs. It regularly serves as a venue for organ concerts and classical music performances that take advantage of the space’s excellent acoustics. The area around Catharinaplein is a lively urban square lined with cafés and shops.

Evoluon

Opened in 1966, the Evoluon is one of the most iconic examples of 1960s futuristic architecture worldwide. The Philips company erected this distinctive flying saucer-like building to commemorate its 75th anniversary, which originally operated as a science museum.

Louis Kalff designed the UFO-like structure, which is 77 meters in diameter and supported by steel cables. The spectacular building traces a circle around the central core in the middle and now functions as a conference and exhibition center. The building itself embodies contemporary design and technological optimism.

Although no longer accessible as a museum, it remains one of Eindhoven’s most photographed locations due to its exterior appearance and architectural significance. It’s particularly spectacular at night when colorful lights illuminate the futuristic form.

A popular photo spot as a futuristic building

Stadswandelpark

The city walking park, which serves as the city’s green lung, follows the route of Eindhoven’s historic city walls. At the end of the 19th century, when the medieval fortifications were demolished, this nearly three-kilometer-long, circular green belt was created on the freed-up land.

The park consists of sections with different characters: there are parts decorated with formal English garden elements, wildly romantic natural areas, and freely running grass lawns. In spring, blooming trees and tulip beds, and in summer, shade-providing canopies make it attractive to locals and tourists alike. Several small lakes and watercourses can be found within it, providing habitat for urban bird species.

The Stadswandelpark is not only suitable for relaxation and walking but also serves as a venue for residents’ active recreation. Running paths, playgrounds, and picnic areas can be found throughout the park.

Strijp-S

The rebirth of the former Philips factory area is one of Europe’s most successful industrial revitalization projects. The once-forbidden zone, a massive industrial complex, has now transformed into a creative center where designers, artists, startups, and innovative businesses work together.

The area has extraordinarily preserved its industrial character: the red brick factory buildings, tall chimneys, and steel structures now house galleries, studios, cafés, and apartments. This raw, urban atmosphere is combined with contemporary design and green spaces, creating Eindhoven’s coolest neighborhood.

Life is particularly vibrant on weekends: at the Strijp-S Market creative fair, local designers, vintage traders, and street food vendors offer their wares. With the Area 51 skate park, the MU Hybrid Art House contemporary art gallery, and the Klokgebouw multifunctional building, Strijp-S is a true cultural magnet.

The former factory district is now a cultural center

Genneper Mill

Located in the southern part of the city in the Genneper Park nature reserve, this watermill is one of Eindhoven’s oldest surviving structures. The mill, built in the 17th century and preserved in working condition, is a historical monument that demonstrates traditional grain processing technology.

The water wheel-powered mill regularly grinds flour using traditional methods, so visitors can see centuries-old technology in action. Next to the mill is the miller’s house and a small museum showcasing the past of Brabant rural life. The mill stream and surrounding meadows paint an idyllic picture, especially in spring and summer.

Genneper Park conceals additional natural and historical attractions: ancient oak forests, pastures, and the nearby PreHistorisch Dorp open-air museum village. The area is a popular starting point for hiking and cycling routes.

„Flying Pins”

One of the city’s most amusing works is the giant bowling pin sculpture group on 18 Septemberplein. Created by Dutch artist Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, the work was installed in the urban square in 2000 and has since become one of Eindhoven’s best-known artistic symbols.

Nine gigantic bowling pins lie seemingly chaotically scattered across the square, as if a giant had just rolled a ball among them. Each pin is more than eight meters tall and bright red and white, catching attention from afar. This playful public art perfectly fits Eindhoven’s creative and innovative character.

The sculptures are a popular meeting point, photo location, and excellently exemplify the city’s creative approach to public art. Restaurants and bars line the area around the square, making the area particularly lively in the evening.

Best museums in Eindhoven

Van Abbemuseum

One of the Netherlands’ most significant modern and contemporary art museums has been collecting and exhibiting 20th and 21st-century art since 1936. The institution, created as a legacy from tobacco industrialist Henri van Abbe, possesses a special collection that comprehensively represents the major movements of modernism.

The building partly preserves the original 1930s functionalist style and has also received contemporary architectural additions. The museum houses more than 2,700 artworks, including works by Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, and El Lissitzky. Dutch art is also outstandingly represented: we encounter works by Karel Appel and artists from the CoBrA movement.

The collection’s strength lies in 20th-century avant-garde and contemporary conceptual art. The museum regularly organizes temporary exhibitions for international contemporary artists, often featuring projects that explore social and political themes.

All information can be found here!

Philips Museum

The museum presenting the history of the Philips company group is located in the building where Gerard Philips founded the light bulb factory in 1891. This special location is the heart of Eindhoven’s identity, as the city’s development and Philips’s history are inseparably intertwined.

The museum guides visitors through the company’s more than 130-year history through interactive exhibitions. We learn how a small family business became a global technology giant and how Philips transformed Eindhoven’s cityscape and social structure. The original factory building’s industrial atmosphere provides an authentic experience.

The collection showcases Philips’s most important innovations: from the first light bulbs through radios and televisions to modern medical equipment. A particular highlight is the design section, which presents household appliances designed by famous Dutch designers. We can see vintage radios, cassette recorders, and early CD players.

The museum is particularly interesting for those interested in the history of technology and industrial heritage. The exhibition also shows how Philips influenced Eindhoven’s social life, from worker housing construction to supporting cultural institutions.

All information can be found here!

DAF Museum

The museum presenting the history of Dutch automobile manufacturing focuses on the DAF (Van Doorne’s Automobiel Fabriek) brand, which was Eindhoven’s pride. The company, founded in 1928, started with trucks and then launched its first passenger car in 1958, which featured the revolutionary Variomatic automatic transmission.

More than fifty vehicles can be viewed in the museum, from the first trailers through legendary DAF passenger cars to modern GINAF trucks. The exhibition chronologically presents the company’s development, paying special attention to innovative technical solutions. Working models of the famous patented Variomatic belt transmission are particularly interesting.

The collection also includes rare racing cars with which DAF successfully competed in various rally competitions. Several prototypes and concept cars that never went into series production can be viewed. The museum supplements the exhibition with interactive elements, films, and documents, providing a comprehensive picture of Dutch automotive industry history.

All information can be found here!

PreHistorisch Dorp

The prehistoric village museum located in Genneper Park recreates everyday life from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages. This unique open-air museum uses authentic reconstructions to show how people lived here millennia ago.

The village contains houses, huts, and settlement sections representing multiple eras: we can see Upper Paleolithic tents, Neolithic wooden houses, Bronze Age farmsteads surrounded by fences, Iron Age structures, and medieval clay houses. Every building was constructed with period techniques from original materials, providing a truly authentic picture of ancient architectural methods.

The museum’s special feature is that it’s not a static exhibition space: demonstration programs take place on weekends and during school holidays, where staff in historical costumes demonstrate activities reconstructed based on archaeological experiments. We can see fire-making with ancient methods, stone tool making, leather processing, pottery firing, and prehistoric cooking.

It’s an extremely popular place among families and school groups, where history can be learned interactively. Children can try archery, participate in excavations, or attend craft workshops. The park’s natural environment combined with the nearby mill offers a full day’s program.

All information can be found here!

Eindhoven weather: when is the best time to visit?

Eindhoven’s climate is temperate maritime, resulting in milder winters and cooler summers than continental areas. Precipitation is frequent throughout the year but generally evenly distributed, so there are no distinctly rainy or dry seasons. The city’s weather is typically Dutch: changeable, often overcast, but rarely extreme.

Spring (March–May):

During spring months, the weather gradually warms; at the end of March, the average temperature is around 10-12 degrees, rising to 17-18 degrees by May. This period is often characterized by windy, changeable weather, but the greening parks and flowering gardens make the city particularly attractive. The Stadswandelpark and Genneper Park are most beautiful now, when nature comes back to life.

Summer (June–August):

Summer months are the warmest but remain pleasantly cool: in July and August, the daily average is usually around 20-23 degrees, rarely rising above 30 degrees. Sunny days and occasional showers characterize this period. It’s an ideal time for outdoor programs, festivals, and exploring the city by bicycle.

Autumn (September–November):

Autumn gradually becomes cooler and more overcast; in September it can still be 18-19 degrees, but by November the temperature drops to only 7-8 degrees. Precipitation increases in October and November. Autumn colors in the parks offer a beautiful sight, and it’s also an excellent period for museum visits.

Winter (December–February):

Winter months are cool but rarely freezing: daytime temperature generally ranges between 3-6 degrees. Snowfall is uncommon but does occur, and the city is particularly atmospheric at such times. Days are short and the sky is often overcast.

Best time to travel:

The best time to visit Eindhoven is from late April to late September, when the weather is most pleasant and most outdoor programs are available. May and June are particularly recommended: it’s not too hot yet, but sunny, long days are expected, and the city is full of life. The famous Dutch Design Week is held at the end of August-September, offering a unique experience for design and innovation enthusiasts.

If you want to avoid crowds, April or September is an ideal choice: the weather is pleasant, there are fewer tourists, and museums and galleries can be visited more peacefully. Winter is less recommended, but if you don’t mind cooler, more overcast weather, the city’s cultural offerings are still enjoyable.

Rotterdam, the second largest city in the Netherlands, is known worldwide for its modern architecture and innovative cityscape.

The South Holland city is located on the banks of the Maas River. The most important Dutch city after Amsterdam and Eindhoven. The city’s unique character was shaped by the reconstruction after World War II bombings, when the rebuilt city center was filled with bold, futuristic buildings instead of traditional Dutch architecture. Rotterdam is home to Europe’s largest port, which not only underlines its economic significance but also establishes its cultural diversity.

Rotterdam attractions

Erasmus Bridge (Erasmusbrug)

Rotterdam’s most famous landmark and one of the Netherlands’ most iconic structures. The bridge, opened in 1996, spans the Maas River, connecting Rotterdam’s northern and southern parts. It was named after Erasmus, the Rotterdam-born humanist.

The bridge stands out with its special asymmetric structure, often called a „swan” or „harp” due to its characteristic shape. The central element of the 802-meter-long structure is a 139-meter-high white pylon from which 40 cables support the bridge structure. At night, special LED lighting makes the bridge even more spectacular.

It’s not just a transportation hub but also a symbol of the city’s modern image. The bridge offers a beautiful panorama of Rotterdam’s skyscrapers and the Maas River, making it a popular photography spot for tourists and locals alike.

One of Rotterdam’s landmarks

Port of Rotterdam

Europe’s largest and the world’s third-largest port fundamentally defines the city’s character and economic significance. Its area covers more than 12,000 hectares and handles over 400 million tons of cargo annually.

The port’s history dates back to the 14th century, but its real development began in the 19th-20th centuries. Its strategic location at the mouth of the Rhine and Maas rivers, along with direct access to the North Sea, enabled it to become Europe’s „gateway”. The modern container terminals and oil refineries offer an impressive sight.

For tourists, the Spido boat cruise is particularly interesting, offering insights into the port’s operations. During the tour, you can see massive container ships, cranes, and industrial facilities. The World Port Center building is also visitable, where exhibitions showcase the port’s history and significance.

Euromast Tower

Rotterdam’s tallest building and the best observation point for the city’s panorama. The 185-meter-high tower, inaugurated in 1960, was designed by architect Huig Maaskant and originally built for the Floriade horticultural world exhibition.

The tower’s structure consists of two main parts: the original 101-meter section from 1960, and the „Space Tower” added in 1970, which added another 84 meters to the height. The revolving restaurant at the top operates year-round.

Its specialty is the „Euroscoop”, a transparent cabin lift that rises and falls on the tower’s exterior. On clear days, you can see the city and its surroundings within a 30-kilometer radius. The tower’s base houses a gift shop and exhibition space, and various extreme sports are also organized here, such as rope climbing and abseiling.

Markthal

One of Rotterdam’s newest architectural masterpieces opened in 2014. The building designed by MVRDV architects is simultaneously a covered market, residential building, and cultural center. The structure’s most striking element is the massive arched roof under which the market is located.

Its interior ceiling is the work of Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam, the gigantic artwork titled „Horn of Plenty”, depicting fruits, vegetables, and flowers across 11,000 square meters. This is the largest artwork in the Netherlands and one of the world’s largest indoor murals.

The Markthal houses more than 100 stalls offering fresh food, local specialties, and international delicacies. The building’s ground floor features restaurants and cafes, while the upper floors house apartments and offices.

Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen)

One of Rotterdam’s most famous and unusual architectural creations. Dutch architect Piet Blom designed this 38-unit residential complex in 1984, located near Blaak metro station and the old Laurenskerk.

The building complex’s concept symbolizes each house as a tree and the entire complex as a forest. The houses are cubes rotated 45 degrees, resting on one of their corners. This unusual placement is not only spectacular but also created practical challenges for residents in furniture placement.

One of the cube houses operates as a museum where visitors can glimpse into the unusual living space. The three-story houses have specially geometric windows that create unique lighting effects.

Fenix Food Factory

One of Rotterdam’s newest gastronomic centers in the Katendrecht district, located on the banks of the Maas River. The building was originally a warehouse from the 1920s, renovated and converted into a modern food hall in 2014.

The complex houses more than 20 local producers and food artisans who make their products on-site. Here you’ll find Rotterdam’s only urban brewery, local cheesemakers, chocolate workshops, and unique bakeries. The concept’s essence is that visitors can not only purchase products but also observe their production process.

The building’s rooftop terrace offers stunning views of the Maas River and the city. On weekends, another market operates around the building where additional local producers offer their goods.

Rotterdam Centraal Station

The central station opened in its new form in 2014 and has since become one of Europe’s most modern railway stations. The building jointly designed by Benthem Crouwel, MVSA Architects, and West 8 is Rotterdam’s new city gate, serving approximately 110,000 passengers daily.

The station’s most striking element is the massive steel and glass structure covering 13,000 square meters of floor space. The building’s roof creates a special geometric form reflecting the city’s dynamic character. The station operates on five levels, with two underground levels for metro and regional trains.

The station is not just a transportation hub but also a cultural center. The waiting room regularly hosts exhibitions and cultural events. The Stationsplein around the building is one of Rotterdam’s busiest squares, from which all the city center’s attractions are easily accessible.

Delfshaven

Rotterdam’s only district that survived World War II bombings, thus still maintaining its original, historical character today. This picturesque neighborhood was formed in the 14th century when it served as the port of Delft at the mouth of the Schie River.

The district’s most famous history is linked to 1620 when passengers of the Mayflower ship departed from here toward America. The memory of the Pilgrim Fathers is preserved at the Oude Kerk (Old Church), where they held a farewell service before departure. The church is still visitable today and creates a special atmosphere combining medieval architecture with historical significance.

Today Delfshaven welcomes visitors with atmospheric restaurants, antique shops, and galleries. Among the historical buildings along the Voorhaven is the Dubbelde Palmboom museum, which presents the history of Delfshaven and Rotterdam.

Witte de Withstraat

The heart of Rotterdam’s cultural district, famous for its museums, galleries, and vibrant nightlife. The street was named after Admiral Witte Corneliszoon de With, a Dutch sailor who lived in the 17th century.

Along the street are numerous contemporary art galleries, design shops, and creative workshops. The Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art (now known as Kunstinstituut Melly) is one of the street’s most important cultural institutions, organizing international contemporary art exhibitions. The institution often hosts experimental and provocative artworks.

The street’s nightlife is also legendary. Numerous bars, clubs, and restaurants are located here, serving as meeting places for the local creative community and tourists. Its special atmosphere comes from the harmonious blend of alternative culture and mainstream entertainment. Street festivals and cultural events are regularly held here.

Het Park

Rotterdam’s largest and oldest park opened in 1852 on the northern bank of the Maas River. The 19-hectare area was originally created in English romantic style and has maintained its original character through careful renovations.

The park’s main attractions include the Bismarck monument erected in 1898 and the rose garden consisting of more than 20,000 rose bushes. The park also contains a Japanese garden completed in 1927, which creates a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city with its authentic Japanese-style structures, bridges, and pond.

It’s a popular relaxation spot among locals, especially in summer. The park offers beautiful views of the Euromast tower and the city’s skyscrapers, making it also a popular photography location.

Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum

Rotterdam’s most significant art museum was established in 1849. The museum’s collection spans art history from the Middle Ages to the present and is particularly rich in Dutch and Flemish paintings.

The museum’s foundation was F.J.O. Boijmans’ collection, later supplemented by D.G. van Beuningen’s collection. Among its most valuable pieces are works by Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel, Rembrandt, and Van Gogh. It also has a significant contemporary art collection, including works by Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol, and Roy Lichtenstein.

Winter months are cool with daytime temperatures between 3-7°C. Snowfall is not frequent, but rain and wind are regular. January and February have the shortest days.

Best time to visit in Rotterdam:

The city’s museums offer unique insights into the world of Flemish art, European printing, fashion, and maritime history. The museum buildings themselves, ranging from medieval houses to modern architectural masterpieces, are attractions in their own right, presenting their collections in authentic environments.

Museum aan de Stroom (MAS)

Antwerp’s largest museum opened in May 2011 in the Eilandje district, on the banks of the Scheldt River.

The building is a stunning 60-meter-high architectural masterpiece made of red sandstone and glass, which is itself a work of art. The museum’s name, „Museum by the River”, refers to its location and Antwerp’s riverine connections.

The Antwerp City Council decided to build the museum in 1998 on Hanzestedenplaats, and the first brick was laid on September 14, 2006. During the project, collections from several former museums, including the Ethnographic Museum and the Maritime Museum, were relocated to the new site. The museum presents Antwerp’s history in a global context, emphasizing the city’s role as an international trading center.

The museum’s collection counts nearly 600,000 pieces, some of which can be viewed in permanent and temporary exhibitions across five floors. The exhibitions cover diverse themes, including trade, maritime history, and Antwerp’s cultural diversity. Visitors can discover the city’s history from prehistoric times to the present day, while enjoying panoramic views of the city, port, and river from the top of the building.

Diamond Museum (DIVA)

One of the world’s most unique institutions, offering an insight into the city’s centuries-old diamond trading and polishing tradition.

Antwerp has been at the centre of the diamond world since the 15th century, so it is no coincidence that it has created a museum that shows visitors how it became the ‘diamond capital’. The museum’s modern exhibition halls cover history, craft traditions and contemporary jewellery design.

Throughout the exhibitions, visitors can learn about the journey of diamonds from the mine to the finished jewel. Step by step, you can follow the processing of the rough gemstone, the development of cutting techniques and the expertise that has made Antwerp’s master craftsmen world famous for generations. There are also special sections on the historical role of diamonds – for example in royal crowns, religious artefacts and famous jewellery – and on the legendary diamond transactions linked to the city.

DIVA will not only showcase the world of diamonds, but also Antwerp’s collection of luxury goods from the 16th and 17th centuries, such as silverware and ornaments. The museum uses modern interactive tools, multimedia presentations and temporary exhibitions to make the visit an unforgettable experience not only for experts but also for the lay visitor.

Antwerp, Belgium’s second-largest city, is known as the home of fashion, contemporary architecture, and famous artists.

Antwerp is located in the heart of the Flemish region, just 45 kilometers north of Brussels. It is not only home to Belgium’s most important port – which is Europe’s second-largest maritime port – but is also known as the center of the world’s diamond trade. The city’s historic center is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, while it also plays a defining role in contemporary architecture and fashion.

The cradle of Flemish painting, where Rubens, Van Dyck, and other masters created their works, still preserves its artistic traditions today. Between the cobbled streets of the old town, baroque palaces, gothic churches, and ultramodern buildings alternate, while modern promenades and historic port areas meet along the banks of the Scheldt River.

Antwerp attractions

Grote Markt

The main square located in Antwerp’s heart is one of the finest examples of Flemish Renaissance architecture in Europe.

The square, developed in the 16th century, is surrounded by magnificent guild houses, each representing a different craft during the city’s golden age. These ornately carved facade buildings now house restaurants, cafés, and souvenir shops.

In the center of the square stands a statue depicting the legendary figure of Silvius Brabo, who according to legend defeated the giant who collected tolls from those crossing the Scheldt River. The bustling life around the statue characterizes the square: tourists, locals, and street performers all make the environment more colorful. The square’s atmosphere becomes especially magical in the evening.

Our Lady’s Cathedral (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal)

Antwerp’s largest and most imposing religious structure was built between 1352 and 1521 in Gothic style.

The 123-meter-high tower is Belgium’s tallest church tower and a visible symbol of the city from afar. The structure is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site and is considered one of Europe’s most beautiful Gothic cathedrals.

The interior of the cathedral houses stunning art treasures, including four original Rubens paintings: „The Descent from the Cross”, „The Crucifixion”, „The Resurrection” and „The Assumption of Mary”. These baroque masterpieces deserve a special trip, as they possess such richness of detail and color splendor that is difficult to find elsewhere.

A special feature of the building is the massive carillon consisting of 47 bells, which entertains visitors with regular concerts. The small streets surrounding the cathedral exude a medieval atmosphere, where antique bookshops and craft workshops line up.

The skyline of Antwerp is defined by

City Hall (Stadhuis)

The Renaissance-style building was completed in 1565 and is one of the most refined examples of Flemish architecture.

Designed by Cornelis Floris de Vriendt, it harmoniously combines Italian Renaissance elements with local traditions. The detailed stone carvings and sculptures on the facade depict Habsburg rulers and allegorical figures.

The interior of the building is as stunning as its exterior: ornately painted ceilings, historical frescoes, and antique furniture adorn the official halls. The city hall still serves active governmental functions today, but certain parts are kept open to the public, allowing us insight into Antwerp’s administrative past.

It was severely damaged during World War II bombing, but meticulous restoration work managed to restore it to its original state. Today it is one of the most photographed buildings on the Grote Markt and also a popular venue for wedding ceremonies.

St. Paul’s Church (Sint-Pauluskerk)

The baroque church built in the 16th century originally belonged to a Dominican monastery.

The building’s specialty is that it combines the Gothic basic structure with baroque decoration, creating a unique architectural hybrid. The church tower is 80 meters high and is visible from afar with its characteristic onion dome.

The church houses one of Antwerp’s richest baroque art collections. The walls are decorated with paintings by Rubens, Van Dyck, and Jacob Jordaens, while the main altar is a magnificent marble work representing the pinnacle of baroque sculpture.

Het Steen

Antwerp’s oldest surviving structure dates from the early 1200s.

This imposing medieval castle originally served to defend the city on the banks of the Scheldt River, later functioning as a prison and then as a warehouse. Today it houses the National Maritime Museum, which presents Belgium’s rich maritime traditions.

The exhibition within the castle walls details the development of Antwerp’s port from the Middle Ages to the present day. Through interactive maps, ship models, and nautical instruments, we can follow how Antwerp became one of Europe’s most important commercial centers. From the museum’s roof terrace, a breathtaking panorama opens to the Scheldt River and the modern port area.

The giant statue in front of the entrance depicts the local legendary figure Lange Wapper. Additionally, the area around the castle is a popular walking area where the meeting of the historic building and the modern city creates a particularly spectacular contrast.

The castle evokes the Middle Ages

Botermarkt

One of Antwerp’s liveliest and most authentic squares, which was also an important center in the Middle Ages.

Today this small, intimate square houses numerous restaurants, cafés, and smaller shops, all of which have preserved their traditional Flemish character. The square’s buildings are typical examples of 16th-17th century Flemish bourgeois houses, with their narrow facades and stepped gables.

The popularity of Botermarkt lies in the fact that it has preserved its authentic, local atmosphere without becoming overly touristy. Here you can find some of the neighborhood’s best traditional Flemish restaurants, where you can taste local specialties such as moule-frites (mussels with french fries) and Flemish beer.

Stadsfeestzaal

Originally opened its doors in 1908 as Antwerp’s most elegant shopping center, based on designs by Louis Delacenserie.

The building was built in art nouveau style, but its specialty is the glass-steel structure, which made it one of the era’s most modern architectural innovations. It was severely damaged during World War II but was completely renovated in 2007.

Today it operates as a luxury shopping center where international brand stores are found alongside local Belgian chocolate and beer shops. The central part of the building is covered with a stunning glass dome through which natural light flows into the multi-level galleries. This light effect becomes particularly spectacular in the afternoon. The restaurant on top of the building offers panoramic views of the city center.

The interior is impressive

Antwerp Central Station

Not only a transportation hub but one of the world’s most beautiful railway stations.

It opened its doors in 1905 based on designs by Louis Delacenserie and was built in eclectic style, combining baroque, art nouveau, and neo-gothic elements. The main hall’s 75-meter-high dome and monumental limestone facade create a true architectural masterpiece.

The interior of the station resembles an opera set: marble columns, gilded decorations, and huge glass surfaces create a grandiose atmosphere. During modern renovations in 2009, additional tracks and an underground level were also created while preserving the original architectural elements.

Works of art can be seen at the railway station

Zaha Hadidplein

The Zaha Hadidplein is an ultramodern district that bears the name of the world-famous Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid.

This area is part of Antwerp’s newest development project, where futuristic buildings and contemporary art installations can be found. The square’s design is an example of 21st-century urban planning that harmoniously fits into the city’s historic fabric.

The central element of Hadid Square is the Port House, the last completed project of Zaha Hadid’s studio, which was completed in 2016. This building „floats” above the historic fire station and with its diamond-shaped structure refers to Antwerp’s diamond industry traditions. The building is particularly spectacular in the evening with LED lighting.

Among the area’s other modern buildings, we find contemporary residential buildings and office complexes, all following principles of sustainable architecture. The square’s walking and cycling paths lead to the Scheldt riverbank, making this district an ideal connection between the historic city center and the modern port district.

Scheldt Riverbank Promenade (Scheldekaaien)

This is a several-kilometer-long promenade on the left bank of the Scheldt River, offering a unique perspective of Antwerp’s port and the industrial scenery of the opposite bank.

The promenade was created in 2017 in place of the old highway and has since become one of the city’s most popular recreational areas. The promenade’s modern design consists of terraced levels situated at different heights.

From here we can observe the huge container ships working in one of Europe’s busiest ports. Information boards along the promenade present the port’s operation and the significance of international trade.

Antwerp ZOO

The Antwerp zoo opened its doors in 1843 and is today one of Europe’s oldest yet most modern zoos.

More than 5,000 animals live on the 10.5-hectare area, including many rare and endangered species. The zoo’s specialty is that it is located directly in the city center, next to Antwerp Central Station, making it easily accessible.

The facility’s 19th-century buildings, such as the Victorian-style elephant house and the artistic bird house, also have architectural value. Sea turtles and flamingos live in the central pond, while the tropical hall dazzles with exotic plants and butterflies.

It is famous for its nature conservation programs and scientific research. The institution actively participates in European breeding programs, particularly in the protection of large mammals such as elephants, giraffes, and Sumatran orangutans.

All information can be found here!

Antwerp weather: when is the best time to visit?

Antwerp has an oceanic climate, which means mild winters and moderate summers. The city’s weather is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, making it less extreme than other parts of Central Europe.

Spring (March-May):

The spring period begins with pleasant temperatures, 8-10°C in March, then reaches 15-18°C by May. Drizzling rain is frequent, but the number of sunny days gradually increases. The city’s parks and historic squares take on their most beautiful form during this time.

Summer (June-August):

During the summer months, temperatures move between 20-25°C, rarely rising above 30°C. This season has the least precipitation, although thunderstorms may occasionally occur. The long summer days allow for riverside walks even after 9 PM.

Autumn (September-November):

The autumn period begins with moderate temperatures (17-20°C in September), then drops to 8-12°C by November. Rainy days become more frequent, but the city’s autumn colors are particularly beautiful on the cobbled streets of the historic quarter.

Winter (December-February):

The winter months are cool, with temperatures between 3-7°C. Snow rarely falls, but drizzling rain and overcast weather are frequent. Despite this, the Christmas market and indoor museums make this a pleasant time for visiting.

Best time to travel to Antwerp:

The most ideal time to visit Antwerp is between May and September. During this period, temperatures are pleasant (18-25°C), precipitation is minimal, and the number of sunny hours is optimal for sightseeing. The period between June and August is particularly recommended when the least rain falls and the long days allow for walks along the riverbank until nine in the evening.

If we want a less crowded tourist season, then late April or early September is an ideal choice, when the weather is still/already favorable, but mass tourism hasn’t yet reached/has already passed its summer level.

Brussels’ transportation system is excellent, befitting a Western capital. All important sights are easily accessible by metro, tram, and bus.

Airports and transportation between the city and airports

Brussels International Airport

Located northeast of the city, next to Zaventem town, this airport serves major airlines.

Train

Multiple trains per hour to Brussels’ three main railway stations (Midi-Zuid, Centraal, Noord), from where you can also reach other Belgian cities. The platform is on Level -1.

The journey to the main station takes 15-20 minutes. Tickets can be purchased online or from ticket vending machines.

All information can be found here.

Airport Line bus

Bus number 12 runs between the airport and Troon metro station daily from morning to evening. It also stops at Schuman metro station (lines 1 and 5). At the airport, it departs from Level 0.

An „Airport2City” ticket is required for travel. You can pay by bank card on the bus for €7.50. A paper ticket from the vending machine costs €8.

All information can be found here.

Charleroi Airport

Charleroi’s airport is located 50 km south of Brussels. Wizzair and Ryanair flights operate here.

Bus

Flibco operates services from the airport. You can reach not only Brussels but also several other cities directly (e.g., Ghent, Bruges).

Buses to Brussels Midi station run 24/7, departing every 20 minutes. The journey takes about 55 minutes.

It’s best to buy tickets online. The ticket is valid for all services on the day of travel, so there’s no problem in case of flight delays.

Price: €19.95

All information (timetable, ticket purchase) can be found here.

Bus and train

From the airport, you can take a TEC bus to Charleroi-Sud railway station, then an Intercity train to Brussels-Midi or Brussels-Centraal stations (both are also metro stations). The bus journey takes 20 minutes, while the train journey is 1 hour. Trains run every 30-60 minutes.

Tickets for both journeys can be purchased together from machines or online.

All information (timetable, ticket purchase) can be found here.

Public transportation in Brussels

Brussels has four metro lines, as well as rapid trams (chrono), trams, and buses that cover the city very well.

Public transportation is free for children under 6 years old!

A single ticket is valid for 1 hour on any STIB/MIVB operated transport, and transfers are allowed.

All information about tickets can be found on the official website here.

Ticket purchase and ticket types prices

There are several options for buying tickets and using public transportation:

Contactless payment with a bank card.

Mobile application: only a few ticket types can be purchased through the STIB-MIVB app.

MOBIB-Basic: a magnetic card that can be loaded with tickets.

Paper-based ticket: can be purchased from vending machines.

Contactless payment

This is the simplest and cheapest method. You can pay with a bank card (or associated mobile phone, smartwatch) with one touch. At metro stations, touch the sensor at the gate; on buses and trams, touch the sensor and wait for the green light to confirm your valid ticket.

One bank card can only be used by one person!

Single ticket price: €2.20.

There’s a daily limit of €8. The system won’t charge more than this. It applies to a calendar day.

Detailed information can be found here.

Brussels has numerous museums due to its rich cultural history. Here are 9 great places to visit!

Best museums in Brussels

Royal Museums of Fine Arts (Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts)

One of Brussels’ most important cultural centers and one of Europe’s largest and most prestigious art museum complexes.

Founded in 1801, it has since amassed a rich collection containing over 20,000 artworks. The museums are divided into four separate institutions, each covering different periods and styles:

Museum of Old Masters: showcases European painting from the 15th to the 18th century, especially Flemish and Dutch masters. Key pieces in the collection include works by Pieter Bruegel, Peter Paul Rubens, and Anthony van Dyck.

Museum of Modern Art focuses on 19th and 20th-century art, with particular emphasis on Belgian artists. The collection includes symbolist works by James Ensor and Fernand Khnopff, as well as pieces by Constant Permeke and Paul Delvaux.

The Magritte Museum focuses on the oeuvre of Belgian surrealist painter René Magritte. It’s one of the world’s largest Magritte collections, showcasing over 200 paintings, drawings, sculptures, and photographs.

The Fin-de-Siècle Museum showcases the period from the late 19th to early 20th century when Brussels became an important center of the art world. Works displayed here include Art Nouveau, decorative arts, and the influence of literature and music on visual arts.

This museum presents the rich past and cultural heritage of Brussels’ history. It’s located on the Grand-Place square, in the elegant Maison du Roi (King’s House) building.

Its main purpose is to showcase Brussels’ historical development from the Middle Ages to the present day. The exhibitions use maps, models, documents, and artifacts to illustrate the city’s architectural changes, economic growth, and cultural flourishing.

One of its most popular sections is the history and costume collection of the famous Manneken Pis statue. This small bronze statue, one of Brussels’ most well-known landmarks, receives special outfits for various celebrations and events. The museum displays hundreds of costumes that Manneken Pis has worn on different occasions.

The museum pays special attention to Brussels’ famous carpet and tapestry-making tradition. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Brussels was world-renowned for these luxury items. Additionally, its rich painting collection captures various periods in the city’s history.

The museum also covers several other topics. The Earth’s Origin and Evolution exhibition showcases our planet’s geological history and the emergence of life. The museum’s collection was originally based on the Belgian royal family’s collection and has continuously expanded over the years with donations, purchases, and instruments acquired through archaeological excavations.

One of the most significant parts of the museum is the collection of historical instruments, featuring instruments from different eras and places. This includes instruments from ancient civilizations such as Egyptian, Greek, and Roman cultures, as well as instruments from the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Ghent was one of the richest cities in Europe during the late Middle Ages, so it’s no wonder we can see numerous wonderful buildings.

After Brussels and Antwerp, Ghent is the third largest city in Belgium by area. The settlement, founded at the confluence of the Scheldt and Lys rivers, is particularly noteworthy for its gastronomy. Famous products include the bagel-like mastel, Leonidas and cuberdon chocolates, babelutten candies, and Tierentyn mustard, which resembles Dijon mustard.

Gravensteen Castle

The „Castle of the Counts” is one of Belgium’s most significant medieval fortifications. The building is an impressive example of medieval castle architecture, with massive walls, towers, and defensive structures.

The castle was built by the Flemish count Philip I in 1180 and was used for centuries as a residence for counts, as well as for administrative and military purposes. Its location was of strategic importance. Between the 14th and 18th centuries, the building served as a prison and later as a textile industry warehouse.

The exhibitions in the castle showcase various medieval weapons, armors, and torture devices. From its highest point, there’s a beautiful panoramic view of the city.

St. Bavo’s Cathedral (Sint-Baafskathedraal)

One of Ghent’s most outstanding attractions is this impressive Gothic-style church.

A smaller church stood here as early as the 10th century, which was expanded in Romanesque style in the 12th century. The building was gradually transformed later, reaching its current imposing form by the 16th century. The cathedral is named after Saint Bavo, the patron saint of Ghent, who was a Flemish nobleman and lived an ascetic life after his conversion.

The church’s most famous artwork is Jan and Hubert van Eyck’s famous 15th-century polyptych, The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb. This altarpiece is one of the most important works of the Flemish Renaissance, known worldwide for its rich details, symbolism, and technical execution. Another famous piece is the Peter Paul painting by Rubens.

Belfry Tower

One of Ghent’s most iconic buildings is a symbol of the city’s medieval wealth and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

The 14th-century tower originally served as a watchtower, from where the population was warned of fire, attacks, or other dangers threatening the city. Built in Flemish Gothic style, it rises high with massive stones, and a dragon-shaped figure can be seen at the top of the tower.

The Belfry’s famous bells played a significant role in the city’s life. The most important bell of the bell tower is the „Klokke Roeland”. These were also rung on festive occasions and are still functioning today. The tower’s current carillon consists of more than 50 bells.

From its top, there’s a great view of the city. You can go up by elevator, but there are various exhibitions about the tower’s history on different levels.

The tower lookout also

City Hall

It’s an outstanding attraction in terms of its exterior, interior, and history.

Construction began in 1519 and continued in several phases until the mid-17th century. Various architectural styles were used during the work, resulting in the city hall’s unique exterior. Many important historical events took place within its walls, including decisions of Flemish counts and the proclamation of city privileges.

It represents two main architectural styles: Gothic and Renaissance. The Gothic wing is particularly ornate, with its impressive facade richly decorated with carved stone statues, lace-like windows, and ornamental elements. The Renaissance wing is simpler and cleaner, reflecting the Flemish Renaissance style.

Among its inner halls, the most prominent is the council chamber, where the city council made decisions for centuries. The room’s decoration is wonderful, with murals and carved wooden ceilings by medieval and Renaissance masters.

Beautiful building inside and out

Korenmarkt Square

The square once functioned as a commercial center and is still one of Ghent’s central meeting places today.

It originally served as a site for grain trade, where local farmers sold their produce. The square has retained its medieval atmosphere, as it’s surrounded by numerous historical buildings and monuments. The most significant are St. Nicholas’ Church and the Market Hall.

The square often hosts various city events, festivals, and cultural events. One such event is the famous Gentse Feesten, which is held annually and is one of Ghent’s largest music and cultural festivals.

St. Nicholas’ Church

One of Ghent’s oldest and most significant churches, perhaps the most beautiful example of the city’s Gothic-style churches.

Its architectural style is associated with Flemish Gothic, featuring high arches, pointed windows, and ornate carvings. The church’s patron saint is St. Nicholas, the patron of merchants and sailors.

Inside, there are numerous artworks dating from the medieval and Renaissance periods. A notable element is the 19th-century organ.

Another important church in Ghent

Veldstraat

Ghent’s busiest shopping street features elegant shops, restaurants, and historical buildings.

The street played a significant role in the city’s economic life, being the main site for the trade of commercial goods as it runs through the center of the city. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the street gradually transformed and became one of the most significant shopping areas.

St. Michael’s Bridge

Due to its architectural beauty, the bridge is also one of the city’s most popular photography spots.

It was built in 1905 to replace older medieval bridges that stood here. The current bridge was constructed in a neo-Gothic style, which fits well with Ghent’s historical cityscape. It’s named after the nearby St. Michael’s Church. An ornate statue of St. Michael can be found on the bridge.

Due to its central location, this is one of the best places to view Ghent’s medieval cityscape.

Graslei Quay

Together with the opposite Korenlei quay, it was one of Ghent’s most important commercial centers, and today it’s popular among locals and tourists alike.

Most of the buildings along the quay were built between the 12th and 17th centuries, in Renaissance and Gothic styles. The most significant is the House of the Grain Weighers, which was the headquarters of the former shippers’ guild and served as an important meeting place for sailors.

Graslei is also an excellent starting point for city sightseeing boat trips. Several boat tours depart from here, offering great photo opportunities of the historical city center.

Graffiti Street

This small street is an officially designated area for graffiti artists, where they can freely paint their creations without it being considered illegal.

It was established on the initiative of Ghent’s city administration to provide a space for graffiti artists. Today, it has become a complete showcase for street art culture.

Brussels is best known as the main headquarters of the European Union (although many of its institutions are located elsewhere), but it’s also a great choice for travel!

It’s the capital of Belgium and Flanders, and the seat of the EU and NATO. Brussels and the entire capital region are officially bilingual, with French and Dutch having equal status.

Brussels attractions

Grand Place (Grote Markt / Grand-Place)

The more than 300-year-old main square is the center of the old town, surrounded by guild houses. One of these is the Broodhuis, the building of the bakers’ guild, now the city museum.

The square is famous for its impressive architectural style, which combines Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical elements. Particularly impressive is the Flower Carpet (Tapis de Fleurs), held every two years, during which beautiful patterns are created on the square using thousands of begonia flowers.

From April to September, there’s also a musical light show that offers a wonderful spectacle.

City Hall (Hotel de Ville)

The most characteristic building on the Grand Place, with its spire visible from many points in the city.

Built in the early 15th century, it’s one of the best examples of Flemish Gothic architecture. Its facade is richly decorated with various Gothic elements such as lace-like stone carvings, statues, and arches.

One of the building’s most striking features is the tall, 96-meter high tower that rises from the central part of the building. At the top of the tower is a statue of the city’s patron saint, Saint Michael.

The interior of the building is also impressive, especially with the decorations of the Great Council Chamber (Salle des États) and the Lesser Council Chamber (Salle du Collège).

King’s House (Maison du Roi)

Also located on the Grand Place, it was built in Neo-Gothic style, and its lace-like facade offers a fairy-tale view.

Originally built in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, it served as the city’s market administration building. The Neo-Gothic transformation took place in the 19th century when it underwent significant renovation and expansion.

Its name is due to the fact that the building once served as the official residence of the Belgian royal family. Today it houses the City Museum (Musée de la ville de Bruxelles).

Grand Place

t’Serclaes Monument

Located on the corner of one of the houses on the Grand Place, this monument is one of the city’s iconic attractions.

Éverard t’Serclaes was a Brussels nobleman known for his heroic deed. In 1356, when Louis, Count of Flanders, tried to capture Brussels, t’Serclaes recaptured the city in a night raid. This secured Brussels’ independence.

The central element of the monument is the bronze statue of Éverard t’Serclaes lying down. The statue is extremely detailed, depicting t’Serclaes in ornate armor and cloak.

Many superstitions and beliefs are associated with the monument. One of the most well-known beliefs is that touching t’Serclaes’ statue brings good luck and fulfills wishes. As a result, certain parts of the statue, especially the arm and head, are shinier from all the touching.

Manneken Pis

One of Brussels’ most famous and beloved attractions. The tiny bronze statue has become a symbol of the Belgian capital.

The statue is only 61 cm tall. The original has been stolen several times, so a copy is on display. The original can be found in the Brussels City Museum.

The statue is often dressed in various costumes. This tradition dates back to the 17th century. It has hundreds of different outfits that it wears on special occasions or national holidays.

There are several legends about its origin. One of the most famous stories is that a little boy saved Brussels from a fire by urinating on the flames. Another story says that a lost boy was found in the city, and this is how they commemorated him when he was finally found.

Mont des Arts

Located on a hill where several great buildings and a beautiful park can be found: Albert I Library, Gallery, and the Protestant Church (Église Protestante de Bruxelles-Musée).

In front of the park rises an equestrian statue of Albert I.

Carillon of the Mont des Arts

This tower is located on the Mont des Arts (Hill of the Arts), where we can see a carillon on its wall.

The carillon consists of 24 bells that play different melodies every hour. These melodies evoke various Belgian historical and cultural events.

A clock is also visible on the wall, surrounded by moving figures. The figures represent Belgian historical personalities and move when the clock strikes.

Royal Palace (Palais Royal/Koninklijk Paleis)

The official residence of the Belgian king and queen, although the family doesn’t live here but in Laeken.

Built in the 18th century, it gained its current form at the end of the 19th century. The site was previously occupied by the ducal palace of Brussels.

The palace’s interior spaces show lavish decoration, with rich gilding, artworks, and elegant furniture. Particularly noteworthy is the Hall of Mirrors, whose ceiling was covered by artist Jan Fabre with tiny beetle shells, creating a stunning green light effect.

Every year from July 22 to early September, except Mondays, the building can be visited for free. The exact closing date can be checked here.

Parc de Bruxelles

It’s worth taking a walk in the large park next to the Royal Palace. There are wide promenades, many statues, and two small ponds in the symmetrically arranged park.

Basilica of the Sacred Heart (Basilique Nationale du Sacré-Cœur à Koekelberg)

This is one of Brussels’ most impressive and well-known religious buildings.

The foundation stone was laid in 1905 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Belgian King Albert I’s reign. However, construction lasted several decades and was only fully completed in 1970, largely funded by donations from the faithful.

Various styles are present in the world’s fifth-largest church. It is 89 meters long, 167 meters wide, and the dome reaches a height of 93 meters.

It’s possible to climb up into the dome, where a circular terrace offers a magnificent view of the city.

Notre-Dame du Sablon (Église catholique Notre-Dame-du-Sablon)

A Gothic cathedral similar to French architecture, a monumental creation and a must-see in Brussels.

Its interior is worth seeing too, with an altar carved from a single block of wood and impressive stained glass windows depicting biblical scenes. These windows create a special light effect in the interior.

St. Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral (Cathedrale St-Michel et Ste-Gudule)

The truncated twin-towered church represents Gothic style, although it was originally built in Romanesque style.

The northern chapel houses some outstanding pieces from the church’s treasury, including an Anglo-Saxon reliquary dated to around 1000, which holds fragments of the Holy Cross.

The Roman style is referenced by the Roman crypt and Roman ruins.

Entrance to the church is free, but visiting the treasury, Roman ruins, and Treasury is paid! All information can be found here!

Atomium

Built for the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair, this structure is also one of the city’s symbols.

The Atomium is a 165 billion times enlarged model of an iron atom, consisting of nine steel spheres, each 18 meters in diameter. The spheres are connected by tubes 3 meters in diameter, and the whole structure is 102 meters high. The building is made of steel and aluminum.

Five of its spheres can be visited, three of which house permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as a panoramic restaurant.

From the top sphere, there’s a breathtaking view of Brussels and the surrounding areas. On a clear day, you can see as far as Antwerp.
