Eindhoven uniquely blends industrial heritage with contemporary design culture, thanks primarily to the Philips company.

The Netherlands’ fifth-largest city is located near the Belgian border and is one of the most important cities alongside Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Nicknamed the „City of Light”, Eindhoven has become one of the Netherlands’ most dynamic innovation centers. Industrial activity initially focused on textiles and tobacco processing until the Philips light bulb factory was established in 1891. The city suffered significant damage during World War II, which was subsequently repaired.

Sint Catharinakerk

Rising in the heart of the city center, Saint Catherine’s Church is Eindhoven’s most significant religious building and one of its most recognizable symbols. The neo-Gothic style church’s distinctive feature is its approximately 73-meter-high tower, which signals the city center from afar.

The church, consecrated in 1867, was designed by Pierre Cuypers, who was also responsible for creating numerous other Dutch neo-Gothic buildings. The interior space’s imposing vaults, stained glass windows, and richly detailed altar together create a stunning atmosphere. World War II bombings severely damaged the building, but it was carefully restored in the 1950s.

The church not only serves a religious function but also hosts cultural programs. It regularly serves as a venue for organ concerts and classical music performances that take advantage of the space’s excellent acoustics. The area around Catharinaplein is a lively urban square lined with cafés and shops.

Evoluon

Opened in 1966, the Evoluon is one of the most iconic examples of 1960s futuristic architecture worldwide. The Philips company erected this distinctive flying saucer-like building to commemorate its 75th anniversary, which originally operated as a science museum.

Louis Kalff designed the UFO-like structure, which is 77 meters in diameter and supported by steel cables. The spectacular building traces a circle around the central core in the middle and now functions as a conference and exhibition center. The building itself embodies contemporary design and technological optimism.

Although no longer accessible as a museum, it remains one of Eindhoven’s most photographed locations due to its exterior appearance and architectural significance. It’s particularly spectacular at night when colorful lights illuminate the futuristic form.

A popular photo spot as a futuristic building

Stadswandelpark

The city walking park, which serves as the city’s green lung, follows the route of Eindhoven’s historic city walls. At the end of the 19th century, when the medieval fortifications were demolished, this nearly three-kilometer-long, circular green belt was created on the freed-up land.

The park consists of sections with different characters: there are parts decorated with formal English garden elements, wildly romantic natural areas, and freely running grass lawns. In spring, blooming trees and tulip beds, and in summer, shade-providing canopies make it attractive to locals and tourists alike. Several small lakes and watercourses can be found within it, providing habitat for urban bird species.

The Stadswandelpark is not only suitable for relaxation and walking but also serves as a venue for residents’ active recreation. Running paths, playgrounds, and picnic areas can be found throughout the park.

Strijp-S

The rebirth of the former Philips factory area is one of Europe’s most successful industrial revitalization projects. The once-forbidden zone, a massive industrial complex, has now transformed into a creative center where designers, artists, startups, and innovative businesses work together.

The area has extraordinarily preserved its industrial character: the red brick factory buildings, tall chimneys, and steel structures now house galleries, studios, cafés, and apartments. This raw, urban atmosphere is combined with contemporary design and green spaces, creating Eindhoven’s coolest neighborhood.

Life is particularly vibrant on weekends: at the Strijp-S Market creative fair, local designers, vintage traders, and street food vendors offer their wares. With the Area 51 skate park, the MU Hybrid Art House contemporary art gallery, and the Klokgebouw multifunctional building, Strijp-S is a true cultural magnet.

The former factory district is now a cultural center

Genneper Mill

Located in the southern part of the city in the Genneper Park nature reserve, this watermill is one of Eindhoven’s oldest surviving structures. The mill, built in the 17th century and preserved in working condition, is a historical monument that demonstrates traditional grain processing technology.

The water wheel-powered mill regularly grinds flour using traditional methods, so visitors can see centuries-old technology in action. Next to the mill is the miller’s house and a small museum showcasing the past of Brabant rural life. The mill stream and surrounding meadows paint an idyllic picture, especially in spring and summer.

Genneper Park conceals additional natural and historical attractions: ancient oak forests, pastures, and the nearby PreHistorisch Dorp open-air museum village. The area is a popular starting point for hiking and cycling routes.

„Flying Pins”

One of the city’s most amusing works is the giant bowling pin sculpture group on 18 Septemberplein. Created by Dutch artist Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, the work was installed in the urban square in 2000 and has since become one of Eindhoven’s best-known artistic symbols.

Nine gigantic bowling pins lie seemingly chaotically scattered across the square, as if a giant had just rolled a ball among them. Each pin is more than eight meters tall and bright red and white, catching attention from afar. This playful public art perfectly fits Eindhoven’s creative and innovative character.

The sculptures are a popular meeting point, photo location, and excellently exemplify the city’s creative approach to public art. Restaurants and bars line the area around the square, making the area particularly lively in the evening.

Best museums in Eindhoven

Van Abbemuseum

One of the Netherlands’ most significant modern and contemporary art museums has been collecting and exhibiting 20th and 21st-century art since 1936. The institution, created as a legacy from tobacco industrialist Henri van Abbe, possesses a special collection that comprehensively represents the major movements of modernism.

The building partly preserves the original 1930s functionalist style and has also received contemporary architectural additions. The museum houses more than 2,700 artworks, including works by Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, and El Lissitzky. Dutch art is also outstandingly represented: we encounter works by Karel Appel and artists from the CoBrA movement.

The collection’s strength lies in 20th-century avant-garde and contemporary conceptual art. The museum regularly organizes temporary exhibitions for international contemporary artists, often featuring projects that explore social and political themes.

All information can be found here!

Philips Museum

The museum presenting the history of the Philips company group is located in the building where Gerard Philips founded the light bulb factory in 1891. This special location is the heart of Eindhoven’s identity, as the city’s development and Philips’s history are inseparably intertwined.

The museum guides visitors through the company’s more than 130-year history through interactive exhibitions. We learn how a small family business became a global technology giant and how Philips transformed Eindhoven’s cityscape and social structure. The original factory building’s industrial atmosphere provides an authentic experience.

The collection showcases Philips’s most important innovations: from the first light bulbs through radios and televisions to modern medical equipment. A particular highlight is the design section, which presents household appliances designed by famous Dutch designers. We can see vintage radios, cassette recorders, and early CD players.

The museum is particularly interesting for those interested in the history of technology and industrial heritage. The exhibition also shows how Philips influenced Eindhoven’s social life, from worker housing construction to supporting cultural institutions.

All information can be found here!

DAF Museum

The museum presenting the history of Dutch automobile manufacturing focuses on the DAF (Van Doorne’s Automobiel Fabriek) brand, which was Eindhoven’s pride. The company, founded in 1928, started with trucks and then launched its first passenger car in 1958, which featured the revolutionary Variomatic automatic transmission.

More than fifty vehicles can be viewed in the museum, from the first trailers through legendary DAF passenger cars to modern GINAF trucks. The exhibition chronologically presents the company’s development, paying special attention to innovative technical solutions. Working models of the famous patented Variomatic belt transmission are particularly interesting.

The collection also includes rare racing cars with which DAF successfully competed in various rally competitions. Several prototypes and concept cars that never went into series production can be viewed. The museum supplements the exhibition with interactive elements, films, and documents, providing a comprehensive picture of Dutch automotive industry history.

All information can be found here!

PreHistorisch Dorp

The prehistoric village museum located in Genneper Park recreates everyday life from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages. This unique open-air museum uses authentic reconstructions to show how people lived here millennia ago.

The village contains houses, huts, and settlement sections representing multiple eras: we can see Upper Paleolithic tents, Neolithic wooden houses, Bronze Age farmsteads surrounded by fences, Iron Age structures, and medieval clay houses. Every building was constructed with period techniques from original materials, providing a truly authentic picture of ancient architectural methods.

The museum’s special feature is that it’s not a static exhibition space: demonstration programs take place on weekends and during school holidays, where staff in historical costumes demonstrate activities reconstructed based on archaeological experiments. We can see fire-making with ancient methods, stone tool making, leather processing, pottery firing, and prehistoric cooking.

It’s an extremely popular place among families and school groups, where history can be learned interactively. Children can try archery, participate in excavations, or attend craft workshops. The park’s natural environment combined with the nearby mill offers a full day’s program.

All information can be found here!

Eindhoven weather: when is the best time to visit?

Eindhoven’s climate is temperate maritime, resulting in milder winters and cooler summers than continental areas. Precipitation is frequent throughout the year but generally evenly distributed, so there are no distinctly rainy or dry seasons. The city’s weather is typically Dutch: changeable, often overcast, but rarely extreme.

Spring (March–May):

During spring months, the weather gradually warms; at the end of March, the average temperature is around 10-12 degrees, rising to 17-18 degrees by May. This period is often characterized by windy, changeable weather, but the greening parks and flowering gardens make the city particularly attractive. The Stadswandelpark and Genneper Park are most beautiful now, when nature comes back to life.

Summer (June–August):

Summer months are the warmest but remain pleasantly cool: in July and August, the daily average is usually around 20-23 degrees, rarely rising above 30 degrees. Sunny days and occasional showers characterize this period. It’s an ideal time for outdoor programs, festivals, and exploring the city by bicycle.

Autumn (September–November):

Autumn gradually becomes cooler and more overcast; in September it can still be 18-19 degrees, but by November the temperature drops to only 7-8 degrees. Precipitation increases in October and November. Autumn colors in the parks offer a beautiful sight, and it’s also an excellent period for museum visits.

Winter (December–February):

Winter months are cool but rarely freezing: daytime temperature generally ranges between 3-6 degrees. Snowfall is uncommon but does occur, and the city is particularly atmospheric at such times. Days are short and the sky is often overcast.

Best time to travel:

The best time to visit Eindhoven is from late April to late September, when the weather is most pleasant and most outdoor programs are available. May and June are particularly recommended: it’s not too hot yet, but sunny, long days are expected, and the city is full of life. The famous Dutch Design Week is held at the end of August-September, offering a unique experience for design and innovation enthusiasts.

If you want to avoid crowds, April or September is an ideal choice: the weather is pleasant, there are fewer tourists, and museums and galleries can be visited more peacefully. Winter is less recommended, but if you don’t mind cooler, more overcast weather, the city’s cultural offerings are still enjoyable.

Rotterdam, the second largest city in the Netherlands, is known worldwide for its modern architecture and innovative cityscape.

The South Holland city is located on the banks of the Maas River. The most important Dutch city after Amsterdam and Eindhoven. The city’s unique character was shaped by the reconstruction after World War II bombings, when the rebuilt city center was filled with bold, futuristic buildings instead of traditional Dutch architecture. Rotterdam is home to Europe’s largest port, which not only underlines its economic significance but also establishes its cultural diversity.

Rotterdam attractions

Erasmus Bridge (Erasmusbrug)

Rotterdam’s most famous landmark and one of the Netherlands’ most iconic structures. The bridge, opened in 1996, spans the Maas River, connecting Rotterdam’s northern and southern parts. It was named after Erasmus, the Rotterdam-born humanist.

The bridge stands out with its special asymmetric structure, often called a „swan” or „harp” due to its characteristic shape. The central element of the 802-meter-long structure is a 139-meter-high white pylon from which 40 cables support the bridge structure. At night, special LED lighting makes the bridge even more spectacular.

It’s not just a transportation hub but also a symbol of the city’s modern image. The bridge offers a beautiful panorama of Rotterdam’s skyscrapers and the Maas River, making it a popular photography spot for tourists and locals alike.

One of Rotterdam’s landmarks

Port of Rotterdam

Europe’s largest and the world’s third-largest port fundamentally defines the city’s character and economic significance. Its area covers more than 12,000 hectares and handles over 400 million tons of cargo annually.

The port’s history dates back to the 14th century, but its real development began in the 19th-20th centuries. Its strategic location at the mouth of the Rhine and Maas rivers, along with direct access to the North Sea, enabled it to become Europe’s „gateway”. The modern container terminals and oil refineries offer an impressive sight.

For tourists, the Spido boat cruise is particularly interesting, offering insights into the port’s operations. During the tour, you can see massive container ships, cranes, and industrial facilities. The World Port Center building is also visitable, where exhibitions showcase the port’s history and significance.

Euromast Tower

Rotterdam’s tallest building and the best observation point for the city’s panorama. The 185-meter-high tower, inaugurated in 1960, was designed by architect Huig Maaskant and originally built for the Floriade horticultural world exhibition.

The tower’s structure consists of two main parts: the original 101-meter section from 1960, and the „Space Tower” added in 1970, which added another 84 meters to the height. The revolving restaurant at the top operates year-round.

Its specialty is the „Euroscoop”, a transparent cabin lift that rises and falls on the tower’s exterior. On clear days, you can see the city and its surroundings within a 30-kilometer radius. The tower’s base houses a gift shop and exhibition space, and various extreme sports are also organized here, such as rope climbing and abseiling.

Markthal

One of Rotterdam’s newest architectural masterpieces opened in 2014. The building designed by MVRDV architects is simultaneously a covered market, residential building, and cultural center. The structure’s most striking element is the massive arched roof under which the market is located.

Its interior ceiling is the work of Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam, the gigantic artwork titled „Horn of Plenty”, depicting fruits, vegetables, and flowers across 11,000 square meters. This is the largest artwork in the Netherlands and one of the world’s largest indoor murals.

The Markthal houses more than 100 stalls offering fresh food, local specialties, and international delicacies. The building’s ground floor features restaurants and cafes, while the upper floors house apartments and offices.

Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen)

One of Rotterdam’s most famous and unusual architectural creations. Dutch architect Piet Blom designed this 38-unit residential complex in 1984, located near Blaak metro station and the old Laurenskerk.

The building complex’s concept symbolizes each house as a tree and the entire complex as a forest. The houses are cubes rotated 45 degrees, resting on one of their corners. This unusual placement is not only spectacular but also created practical challenges for residents in furniture placement.

One of the cube houses operates as a museum where visitors can glimpse into the unusual living space. The three-story houses have specially geometric windows that create unique lighting effects.

Fenix Food Factory

One of Rotterdam’s newest gastronomic centers in the Katendrecht district, located on the banks of the Maas River. The building was originally a warehouse from the 1920s, renovated and converted into a modern food hall in 2014.

The complex houses more than 20 local producers and food artisans who make their products on-site. Here you’ll find Rotterdam’s only urban brewery, local cheesemakers, chocolate workshops, and unique bakeries. The concept’s essence is that visitors can not only purchase products but also observe their production process.

The building’s rooftop terrace offers stunning views of the Maas River and the city. On weekends, another market operates around the building where additional local producers offer their goods.

Rotterdam Centraal Station

The central station opened in its new form in 2014 and has since become one of Europe’s most modern railway stations. The building jointly designed by Benthem Crouwel, MVSA Architects, and West 8 is Rotterdam’s new city gate, serving approximately 110,000 passengers daily.

The station’s most striking element is the massive steel and glass structure covering 13,000 square meters of floor space. The building’s roof creates a special geometric form reflecting the city’s dynamic character. The station operates on five levels, with two underground levels for metro and regional trains.

The station is not just a transportation hub but also a cultural center. The waiting room regularly hosts exhibitions and cultural events. The Stationsplein around the building is one of Rotterdam’s busiest squares, from which all the city center’s attractions are easily accessible.

Delfshaven

Rotterdam’s only district that survived World War II bombings, thus still maintaining its original, historical character today. This picturesque neighborhood was formed in the 14th century when it served as the port of Delft at the mouth of the Schie River.

The district’s most famous history is linked to 1620 when passengers of the Mayflower ship departed from here toward America. The memory of the Pilgrim Fathers is preserved at the Oude Kerk (Old Church), where they held a farewell service before departure. The church is still visitable today and creates a special atmosphere combining medieval architecture with historical significance.

Today Delfshaven welcomes visitors with atmospheric restaurants, antique shops, and galleries. Among the historical buildings along the Voorhaven is the Dubbelde Palmboom museum, which presents the history of Delfshaven and Rotterdam.

Witte de Withstraat

The heart of Rotterdam’s cultural district, famous for its museums, galleries, and vibrant nightlife. The street was named after Admiral Witte Corneliszoon de With, a Dutch sailor who lived in the 17th century.

Along the street are numerous contemporary art galleries, design shops, and creative workshops. The Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art (now known as Kunstinstituut Melly) is one of the street’s most important cultural institutions, organizing international contemporary art exhibitions. The institution often hosts experimental and provocative artworks.

The street’s nightlife is also legendary. Numerous bars, clubs, and restaurants are located here, serving as meeting places for the local creative community and tourists. Its special atmosphere comes from the harmonious blend of alternative culture and mainstream entertainment. Street festivals and cultural events are regularly held here.

Het Park

Rotterdam’s largest and oldest park opened in 1852 on the northern bank of the Maas River. The 19-hectare area was originally created in English romantic style and has maintained its original character through careful renovations.

The park’s main attractions include the Bismarck monument erected in 1898 and the rose garden consisting of more than 20,000 rose bushes. The park also contains a Japanese garden completed in 1927, which creates a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city with its authentic Japanese-style structures, bridges, and pond.

It’s a popular relaxation spot among locals, especially in summer. The park offers beautiful views of the Euromast tower and the city’s skyscrapers, making it also a popular photography location.

Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum

Rotterdam’s most significant art museum was established in 1849. The museum’s collection spans art history from the Middle Ages to the present and is particularly rich in Dutch and Flemish paintings.

The museum’s foundation was F.J.O. Boijmans’ collection, later supplemented by D.G. van Beuningen’s collection. Among its most valuable pieces are works by Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel, Rembrandt, and Van Gogh. It also has a significant contemporary art collection, including works by Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol, and Roy Lichtenstein.

This is the world’s first fully public museum storage facility where visitors can gain insight into the behind-the-scenes secrets of museum collection management. The 39-meter-high, mirror-surfaced building has become Rotterdam’s new architectural symbol.

Best time to visit in Rotterdam:

Those who read my reports might not be surprised that I often spend just one day in a big city. Yes, I know, you can’t really get to know a place in such a short time, but life is short. 🙂

This time Amsterdam was part of a tour, which I visited on a summer day (June 30, 2022). The day before I was in Brussels, and the day before that in Bruges. I traveled home late in the evening by bus from the Dutch capital, but also ‘popped into’ Prague for half a day.

So, on a Thursday morning, I arrived from the Belgian capital by the Thalys express train. There are many trains daily between the two cities. It takes two hours to travel, and the ticket was just 29 euros when booked in advance.

The train arrived at Central Station, from where it’s just a few minutes’ walk to the immediate downtown.

Before that, I took a ferry across the canal to the opposite side, as the boats operating between the two sides are free. Needless to say, there are a lot of cyclists everywhere.

You can actually explore the downtown in just one day. The distance between Central Station and the Rijksmuseum is 2.5 km. And along the way, you can encounter many sights.

If you want a beautiful view, go to the NEMO Science Museum. There’s a free panoramic terrace on the top with benches and loungers. There’s also a café, a great place for coffee.

Once you start walking, after a while you’ll be immersed in walking along the canals. It’s actually quite fun to wander aimlessly, each street has its own feel.

I also visited the Albert Cuypmarkt, the local main market. On both sides of a long street, there are numerous vendors, food stalls, everything you can find here.

The ‘local City Park’ is Vondelpark. As the weather was nice, there were a lot of people walking, cycling, picnicking. It’s worth coming here to enjoy the fresh air and time.

Vondelpark

For many, Amsterdam’s red-light district comes to mind. Of course, I walked through it during the day as well. There’s surely more life in the evening, during the day a couple of ladies were sitting behind the windows, and the crowd doesn’t swarm this street at that time.

Obviously, there’s much more to Amsterdam, as I didn’t visit Anne Frank’s house, the Rijksmuseum, or the Van Gogh Museum. However, the Dutch lifestyle and the relaxed way of life really appealed to me, it’s a pleasant capital. I definitely recommend it to anyone considering a trip here!

Amsterdam can represent a sense of freedom for everyone, but it’s not just the ambiance that makes a visit worthwhile. I’ll introduce you to the sights of Amsterdam, so if you go there, you won’t miss anything!

Netherlands‘ capital and largest city. Popular among tourists, it has long been considered one of the world’s most livable cities.

Amsterdam is also recommended for families, as it is a very child-friendly city!

The city is famous for its nightlife and festival activities: numerous nightclubs (Melkweg, Paradiso) are among the world’s most famous. It’s one of the world’s most multicultural cities, with at least 177 nationalities represented.

Attractions in Amsterdam

Dam

This is Amsterdam’s main square. Tourists enjoy spending time here, watching various street performances.

The roughly 200m long and 100m wide square is crossed by the historical city center’s main street (Damrak to the north, Rokin to the south).

The square is also the convergence point for the city’s two main shopping streets, Nieuwendijk and the Kalverstraat and Damstraat.

On the east side of the square stands the Nationaal Monument (National Monument).

Access: Trams 1, 2, 4, 5, 13, 14, 17 to Dam stop.

Royal Palace (Koninklijk Paleis)

Formerly a town hall, it’s now used for official receptions by the royal family. It’s located on the western side of Dam Square.

The building, featuring Dutch Classicism, was constructed during the Dutch Golden Age between 1648 and 1665. It was converted into a royal palace in 1808.

Its significant rooms are clad in marble, and higher wall sections are covered with realistically painted wooden paneling. This method was used to create the 36m long and 18m wide council chamber (Raadzaal), one of Europe’s largest such spaces.

The empire-style furniture, dating back to the time of Louis Bonaparte, is impressive. The palace’s rooms are adorned with paintings and sculptures, and several have frescoed ceilings.

All information (entrance fee, opening hours, etc.) can be found here!

Nowadays, it no longer functions as a church but hosts temporary exhibitions and concerts.

Canals

Three concentric canals run through the city, built in the 17th century. The innermost is Herengracht, the middle one is Keizersgracht, and the outer one is Prinsengracht.

A boat tour is a must when visiting! Evening tours are particularly beautiful, with candlelit boats cruising the canals.

Tickets can be purchased online, but it’s also worth checking out the offices around Dam Square or Centraal Station.

In the Netherlands, not only Amsterdam is worth visiting, but the countryside also offers many natural beauties for visitors.

Officially, the Kingdom of the Netherlands is a northwest European country, which also possesses overseas territories in the Caribbean region. It is one of the most densely populated countries in Europe. It is bordered by Germany to the east and Belgium to the south.

Best places in Netherlands

Amsterdam

Many consider the Dutch capital as the land of freedom and cyclists, which is true. I have never seen as many bicycles as here. 😊

The city, crisscrossed with canals, has a great atmosphere. The downtown area is walkable, allowing most of the attractions to be seen this way.

Amsterdam attractions

Keukenhof Garden

Located between Amsterdam and The Hague in Lisse, Keukenhof Castle and its gardens are famous.

This is the world’s largest flower garden, where approximately seven million flower bulbs bloom over 32 hectares each spring. Nearly 100 varieties of tulips can be found.

The garden paths total 15 kilometers, where, alongside the flowers, many sculptures can also be admired.

The park is open annually from the last week of March to mid-May. The most spectacular time is during the tulip bloom in mid-April.

This unique situation dates back to medieval land exchanges and sales. The resolution took a long time, but it was eventually left as is to boost tourism.

Borders are marked with white crosses painted on the asphalt, with NL and B signs on either side. You can even see doors through which this imaginary line passes, making the residents subject to the laws of both countries.
