The university’s famous students included luminaries such as historian Ibn Khaldun and Jewish philosopher Maimonides.

The mosque complex is impressively large, capable of accommodating more than 22,000 worshippers, making it one of Africa’s largest mosques. The building is a beautiful example of Moorish architecture, made unique by colorful mosaics, carved plaster, and cedar wood decorations. The marble columns of the central courtyard and intricate geometric patterns are particularly stunning.

Although non-Muslims cannot enter the interior of the mosque, the architectural masterpiece can still be admired through the entrance gates and courtyard. The library preserves more than 4,000 valuable manuscripts, including rarities that have guarded the treasures of Islamic scholarship for centuries.

Chouara Tannery

The more than thousand-year-old tannery is one of Fez’s most iconic sights, where the ancient traditions of leather processing are still practiced in their original form.

The sight of colorful vats and pools offers an unforgettable experience, especially when viewed from the surrounding terraces, from which the entire complex can be overlooked. Leather made using traditional methods is world-renowned for its quality.

Tannery workers work daily in pools filled with solutions of various colors, where they clean, soften, and dye the hides. Natural dyes give the leather vibrant red, yellow, blue, and green colors. The work is extremely difficult and harmful to health, yet many families continue this craft for generations.

Around the tannery, numerous leather goods shops can be found, where visitors can purchase locally made bags, shoes, belts, and other leather goods. When observing the work, it’s advisable to hold mint tea or rosemary under your nose, as the tanning process emits a strong odor.

Bou Inania Madrasa

Considered the architectural pinnacle of the Marinid dynasty and one of Fez’s most beautiful religious buildings.

Built in the 14th century, this madrasa also functioned as a mosque, which was unusual among contemporary educational institutions. Every square centimeter of the two-story building rising around the central courtyard is decorated with beautifully carved stucco ornaments, colorful zellige mosaics, and fine cedar wood carvings. The mihrab, the niche indicating the direction of prayer, is particularly stunning.

The former student rooms can still be visited today, where young people studying religious sciences lived in small cells. From the building’s roof, there’s a beautiful view of Fez’s old city and the surrounding mountains. Today it operates as a museum, providing insight into the world of medieval Islamic education.

Al Attarine Madrasa

Built in the 14th century, this madrasa was located in the perfume and spice merchants’ quarter, from which it got its name.

The building is one of the most refined examples of Marinid architecture, characterized by meticulous attention to detail. The arcades around the central courtyard are decorated with beautifully carved cedar wood beams, while the walls are covered with colorful mosaics and calligraphic inscriptions. The small windows of the student rooms on the upper level frame the courtyard, where young people once lived and studied religious sciences.

Blue Gate (Bab Bou Jeloud)

This city gate connects Fez’s new city district (Fes el-Jdid) with the old city (Fes el-Bali) and is one of the city’s most photographed attractions.

Built in 1913, the gate is a creation of the French colonial period but follows traditional Moroccan architectural style. The gate’s inner side is decorated with blue mosaics, while the outer side is green, symbolizing the colors of the city and Islam.

Jnan Sbil Garden

Its specialty is that the entire production process takes place on-site, from clay preparation to final firing and painting. The masters demonstrate how the famous zellige mosaics are made, which are world-renowned for their unique colors and shapes.

The workshop’s store offers a wide selection of locally made ceramic objects, plates, vases, and decorative elements. In addition to shopping, visitors can often participate in short workshops to make ceramics, where they can try this ancient craft with their own hands.

Dar Batha Museum

Housed in a palace built at the end of the 19th century, this museum is home to one of Morocco’s most significant ethnographic and decorative arts collections.

The former royal residence is a beautiful example of traditional Moroccan palace architecture, where a harmonious blend of Andalusian and Moroccan style elements was realized. The columned hall around the central courtyard, carved plaster ornaments, and colorful mosaics all represent the peaks of Moroccan decorative arts.

The museum’s rich collection showcases the diversity of Moroccan craft traditions: here you can find famous Fez ceramics, traditional textiles, wooden carved objects, and metalwork. Nejjarine Museum

Located in a beautifully restored 18th-century caravanserai building, this museum houses a collection dedicated to the traditional art of woodworking.

The building itself is an excellent example of traditional Moroccan commercial architecture, where merchants and their camels once rested during long journeys. The museum’s four levels chronologically present the development and techniques of Moroccan woodworking.

The collection includes traditional tools, furniture, musical instruments, and architectural elements, all testifying to the craft of processing cedar and other noble wood species. Among the exhibited pieces are famous Fez musical drums, Quran stands, and traditional doors.

From the museum’s roof terrace, there’s a stunning view of the medina’s rooftops and surrounding minarets. During the visit, guests can learn about different wood carving techniques, the meaning of geometric patterns, and the social role of woodworking in Moroccan culture.

Fez weather: when is the best time to visit?

Fez has a continental Mediterranean climate, featuring hot, dry summers and mild, occasionally rainy winters. The city’s 400-meter elevation above sea level moderates summer heat but can be cooler in winter than the coastal areas.

Spring (March-May):

Spring is a pleasant weather season when average temperatures range between 15-25°C. Days become increasingly warmer while nights may still remain cool. At the end of March and in April, rainy days may occasionally still occur, but by May the weather stabilizes. This is one of the most ideal periods for sightseeing.

Summer (June-September):

Summer is hot and dry, with average temperatures ranging between 25-40°C. Particularly in July and August, temperatures often exceed 40°C, making sightseeing difficult. Precipitation is minimal, nights are generally more pleasant, but even then temperatures remain above 20°C.

Autumn (September-November):

Autumn is an excellent choice for visiting, when average temperatures range between 20-30°C. September is still warm but bearable, while October and November offer ideal conditions for sightseeing. Precipitation begins to increase, but there are still few rainy days.

Winter (December-February):

Djemaa el-Fna Square

Bahia Palace

One of Morocco’s most impressive palaces, its name „Bahia” means „beauty” or „brilliance”.

Built in the 19th century, it was constructed by Si Moussa, the grand vizier at the time, to impress the country’s leaders. Later, his son Bou Ahmed expanded and made it even more luxurious.

The palace represents a perfect combination of Arabic, Islamic, and Moroccan architectural styles. The complex includes multiple pavilions, courtyards, gardens, and interior rooms decorated with intricate tile patterns, carved wooden details, and painted ceilings.

One of the building’s most spectacular parts is the central courtyard, featuring palm trees, fountains, and paved marble stones. The interior spaces are extremely rich, covered with mosaic tiles, plasterwork, and painted ceilings.

Majorelle Garden

This garden with its exotic plant collection was made famous by notable personalities.

French painter Jacques Majorelle moved to Marrakesh in 1919, where he later built this oasis. The painter used a special blue color, the famous „Majorelle Blue”, on buildings and decorative elements, which became the garden’s trademark. After his death, the garden fell into decline until Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé discovered it, restored it, and opened it to the public.

It includes about 300 species, including various cacti, palm trees, bamboo, and other tropical plants. In the center of the garden is a small cobalt blue villa house that currently houses a Berber art museum. This building preserves the memory of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé.

Saadian Tombs

These are the burial places of the Saadi dynasty rulers. They stood forgotten and abandoned for centuries but have become one of the city’s most famous attractions today.

During the dynasty’s rule, Marrakesh flourished and became the country’s religious and cultural center. The tombs are located in a hidden garden within the kasbah (fortress) area. They are arranged around a beautiful, ornate courtyard surrounded by a special structure decorated with marble columns and mosaics.

The most important tomb belongs to Sultan Ahmed al-Mansur, who was one of the greatest and most famous rulers of the Saadi dynasty. His tomb is the most magnificent and extremely richly decorated.

Ben Youssef Madrasa

This medieval religious school was built at the end of the 14th century and operated as the largest religious school in Marrakesh for over 400 years.

Built during the Marinid dynasty, it was a center for Islamic religious studies. The madrasa was named after the famous Sultan Youssef ibn Tashfin, who founded the Almoravid dynasty and had a significant impact on the city.

It was built around a large courtyard. Its walls are decorated with beautiful arabesque patterns, with green, blue, gold, and white tiles standing out. The ceilings and wooden carvings are particularly beautiful.

El Badi Palace

Once the city’s most impressive and richest palace, it now stands in ruins.

Construction of the palace began in 1578, and it served as the official residence of the Saadi rulers for a significant time. It was famous for its rich decorations, marble, gilded details, beautiful gardens and fountains, and the work of the best artists and craftsmen. In the 17th century, under the rule of the Alaouite dynasty, the palace was abandoned.

Even in its ruined state, it’s worth visiting. We can admire the surviving elements, such as the huge fountain, special mosaics, ornate columns, and the walls surrounding the space.

Menara Gardens

The vast area covered with olive trees offers a wonderful panorama of the Atlas Mountains in the background.

Its central element is the huge square pool surrounded by olive tree groves. The pool provides a reflective water surface that offers a magical sight, especially at sunset.

At one end of the pool is a beautiful pavilion with a green tiled roof, representing Moroccan architectural style. Locals refer to this as the Menara pavilion, and it’s an iconic part of the garden.

Almoravid Qubba

One of the city’s oldest surviving architectural monuments dates from the Almoravid dynasty period.

It was a ritual building originally used for religious purposes, probably belonging to a mosque and serving as a purification room for believers.

Both the exterior and interior of the building feature some of the finest examples of Islamic art, including intricate arabesque patterns, geometric tile and plaster decorations, and calligraphy.

Marrakech Museum

One of Marrakesh’s most interesting cultural sites showcases Moroccan art, history, and culture.

Located in the 19th-century Dar Menebhi Palace, which was the residence of a wealthy local leader, Mehdi Menebhi’s family. Its most impressive part is the central courtyard, decorated with a huge chandelier.

Marrakech

Situated at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, Marrakech is Morocco’s fourth largest city. Known as the „Red City”, it is one of the country’s most visited tourist destinations.

The city hosts numerous markets employing thousands in pottery, copperware, leather, and other crafts. It is home to Morocco and all of Africa’s largest traditional market, Jemaa el-Fna.

The market’s landscape includes the Koutoubia Mosque. Built during the Almohad dynasty, it is especially famous for its tall minaret, which at nearly 70 meters tall, is the city’s highest point.

Marrakesh attractions

Aït Benhaddou

This fortified village (ksar) lies along the Ounila River and once controlled the Marrakesh-Timbuktu caravan route. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1987.

The village mainly consists of houses built using the traditional pisé (rammed earth) technique, situated on a steep hillside. The kasbahs’ labyrinthine streets and narrow alleys have remained unchanged for centuries.

The surrounding landscape is also breathtaking, with dry riverbeds, palm groves, and the distant Atlas Mountains making for a great destination. The village allows for an exploration of traditional Berber architectural styles and Moroccan rural life.

Thanks to its atmosphere, it has often served as a filming location for famous movies and TV shows such as Gladiator and Game of Thrones.

Rabat

The historical attractions of Morocco’s capital are part of UNESCO World Heritage.

Among its attractions is the Oudayas Kasbah, a fortified quarter built in the 12th century. It still retains its medieval ambiance with narrow, winding streets, whitewashed and blue-painted houses, and its distinctive Arab-Andalusian architecture.

The Hassan Tower is one of the most emblematic monuments. It began construction in the 12th century as part of a massive mosque, but was never completed.

The city also hosts the Royal Palace, the main residence of Morocco’s royal family. Though the palace itself is not open to visitors, the surrounding areas and gates are definitely worth a visit.

Fez

For centuries the country’s spiritual, cultural, and religious center, it was the capital of the kingdom until 1912.

The city is divided into three parts: Fès el-Bali, the ancient medina; Fès el-Jdid, where the royal palace is located; and Ville Nouvelle, built during French colonial times.

Chefchaouen

Located in the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco.

It became known for its blue-painted streets and houses, earning it the nickname „The Blue City”. The blue color is said to ward off summer heat as well as having spiritual significance, evoking the color of the sky.

The city has significant religious heritage: about 20 mosques and prayer halls, 11 zaouïas (buildings linked to the Sufis), and many mausoleums, earning it the name of the Holy City.

Another major attraction is the kasbah, a fortified area. Today it serves as a museum where the city and the region’s history can be explored.

Tangier

Located at the southern entrance of the Mediterranean Sea, the city’s position makes it a significant place. It’s becoming increasingly popular due to its famous casino and lively nightlife.

Its center is the bustling Grand Socco market, where life goes on day and night. On the opposite side stands the Sidi Bou Abid Mosque, with its faience-decorated minaret.

Next to the Grand Socco starts the old city, dominated by the kasbah (fortress). This includes the Dar-el-Makhzen, the sultan’s palace. Its residential quarters have been turned into a Moroccan art museum, featuring art objects from different regions of the country.

Walking along the palm-lined promenade of Avenue d’Espagne, close to the seafront, its restaurants, hotel cafes, and international life evoke the atmosphere of Nice.

Erg Chebbi

In the southeastern part of Morocco, one can see some of the Sahara’s most spectacular dunes.

The massive, orange sand dunes can reach up to 150 meters in height. The colors of the dunes change continuously throughout the day, from the golden light of dawn to the deep orange of sunset.

Located near Merzouga, a small Berber village, it often serves as a starting point for desert tours. The dunes can be explored in various ways: by camel, by four-wheel drive, or even on foot.

Meknes

One of Morocco’s four royal cities. Often referred to as the country’s „forgotten” royal city because it is less known than Marrakech, Fès, or Rabat, it thus does not experience the same crowds as the other three cities.

Meknes reached its height in the 17th century when Sultan Moulay Ismail made it the capital and embarked on massive construction projects. The most spectacular example is the vast Heri es-Souani, the sultan’s stables and granaries, which could accommodate up to 12,000 horses at a time.

The Moulay Ismail mausoleum, the sultan’s resting place, is also popular among tourists. Although the burial site is only open to Muslims, the mausoleum’s courtyards are open to everyone.

The magnificent Bab Mansour gate, the entrance to Meknes, is considered Morocco’s most beautiful gate, with its ornate tiles and arched design.

Todra Valley

The valley is famous for the Todra Gorge, a stunning section of the Todra River surrounded by over 300-meter-high cliffs. At its narrowest points, the distance between the cliffs is 10 meters.

It is a favored location not just for hikers and nature enthusiasts, but also for rock climbers. The cliffs offer routes of various difficulty levels, attracting adventurers from around the world.

Casablanca

The country’s largest city and economic center brilliantly combines modernism with traditional Moroccan culture.

Its most beautiful attraction is the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest buildings of its kind in the world. It is one of the few mosques in Morocco open to non-Muslim visitors. A wonderful architectural masterpiece: its minaret is the tallest in the world, at over 200 meters. Its significance is underscored by the use of materials such as marble, gold, and onyx in its construction.

Among its modern parts, the Maârif district and Anfa stand out, where elegant shops, cafes, and restaurants can be found.

Naturally, its coastline must also be mentioned. Along the shore runs the Corniche promenade, a popular spot for both locals and tourists.

Essaouira

The ancient city located on the Atlantic Ocean coast is said to have been founded in 814 BC, according to legends. Its other name is Szavíra.

In the 18th century, a French architect, Théodore Cornut, designed a military port and a small town here on the orders of one of the sultans. The sultan highly praised the architect, giving the new city the name as-Szavíra, which literally means well-designed.

Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, a mix of Moroccan and European architectural styles. Many consider it the most beautiful medina in Morocco. A fortified city wall surrounds this part, which is one of the city’s main attractions.

In the sixties and seventies, it was also discovered by hippies. After the memorable visit of Jimi Hendrix, many came from Western Europe and the United States. Its impact is still felt and seen in the city today.

Dades Valley

Located in the Atlas Mountains, it’s also called the Valley of Roses.

The valley is a canyon formed by the Dades River, which carves its winding path through rocky landscapes and steep cliffs.

Its most well-known attraction is the rock formation known as Monkey Fingers, as well as numerous canyons and gorges, including the famous Dades Gorge. Tetouan

Besides the royal palace, it is famous for about 130 sacred buildings and monuments in the old town. The medina’s character was shaped in the 16th century by Andalusian Moors who fled here and immigrant Jews.

Volubilis

This is a partially excavated Roman site near Meknès. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1997.

Originally a Carthaginian settlement, it was ruled by the Romans for centuries, then occupied by Berber tribes at the end of the 3rd century. The Idrisid dynasty, which founded Morocco, started from here in the 8th century. By the 11th century, the city was deserted and fell into ruin.

Archaeological excavations began in the mid-19th century, and it has since become a tourist attraction. The bustling commercial life of the city is evident from the identification of more than 120 business premises, from bakeries to bronze workshops.

About half of it has been excavated so far, primarily the city center and the Roman main street, and the most important public buildings have been reconstructed. The most significant part is the Arch of Caracalla, erected in honor of the Roman emperor and his mother.

Agadir

The city on the oceanfront has recently become a popular holiday destination.

It was almost completely destroyed by a severe earthquake in 1960, so modern architecture reflects most of today’s Agadir, differing from Morocco’s other cities rich in traditions. This has turned it into a developed tourist center.

Its biggest attraction is the long, sandy beach, which often appears in pictures. The city’s climate is pleasant all year round, with a high number of sunny hours and moderate temperatures, making Agadir an ideal holiday destination.
