Freedom Monument

Central Market

One of Europe’s largest and liveliest covered markets operates in five huge Zeppelin hangars built during World War I.

Riga Radio and TV Tower

Latvian National Opera House

The current three concrete crosses were erected in 1989 after the Soviet period, restoring the city’s symbolic landscape. The original wooden cross group stood here in medieval times, then the Soviet authorities destroyed them with explosives in 1950.

Užupis

In the 1990s, artists and writers began to populate the then-deteriorated district, which has now become Vilnius’s cultural and creative center. The „Užupis Constitution” formulates humorous but thought-provoking principles in 41 points, such as: „Everyone has the right to understand”, „Everyone has the right to understand nothing”.

Lukiškės Prison

One of the most harrowing memorial sites in Vilnius’s history, which operated as a correctional facility from 1904 to 2019. During the Soviet period, political prisoners were also held here, including numerous Lithuanian independence fighters and intellectuals. The prison cells held, for example, human rights activist Viktoras Petkus and other dissidents.

Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights

One of Vilnius’s most harrowing historical museums, operating in the former KGB building. The museum opened in 1992 and documents the crimes of Soviet rule and the resistance of the Lithuanian people.

In the building’s basement is a reconstruction of the contemporary prison cells where political prisoners were held and tortured. The museum presents the history of deportations, when more than 280,000 Lithuanians were transported to Siberia and other Soviet territories.

The museum’s collection includes documents from Soviet secret services, photographs, personal items, and testimonies. Particularly moving is the „Memory Walls” exhibition, which presents the names and faces of victims of political oppression.

On the upper floors of the museum, visitors can follow the history of the Lithuanian independence movement, from the founding of Sąjūdis to the declaration of independence in 1990. National Gallery

Vilnius’s oldest and most significant museum was established in 1933 and is now part of the Lithuanian National Museum. The main building is housed in the 18th-century Tyzenhaus Palace, which is itself an architectural landmark with Baroque and Neoclassical features.

The museum’s collection provides a comprehensive picture of the development of Lithuanian visual arts from the 16th century to the present. Particularly valuable is the 18th-19th century portrait painting collection, as well as works by 20th-century Lithuanian painters, including symbolist works by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis.

Notable is the „Lithuanian Golden Fund” collection, which encompasses the country’s most valuable paintings. Here visitors can see the most outstanding works of Lithuanian romanticism, realism, and modernism, as well as works by contemporary Lithuanian artists.

Vytautas Kasiulis Art Museum

The museum presents the life’s work of the famous Lithuanian-French painter and the 20th-century École de Paris movement. Kasiulis (1918-1995) was born in Vilnius, then worked in Paris and became a recognized member of international artistic life.

Located in Vilnius’s old town, in a 17th-century Baroque building. The permanent exhibition shows Kasiulis’s development from early Lithuanian motifs to Parisian expressionist and abstract works.

The collection contains not only Kasiulis’s works but also works by other members of the Parisian Lithuanian artistic community, as well as works by contemporary French artists. This provides a unique opportunity to understand 20th-century European artistic movements.

Vilnius is a continental climate city where the four seasons are markedly distinct from each other, each with its own charm and characteristics.

Spring (March-May):

Old Town

Tallinn’s heart and one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval city centers has been under UNESCO protection since 1997.

Walking among the cobblestone streets, you can feel as if you’re taking a journey back to the Middle Ages. The 13th-15th century buildings, towered churches, and defensive walls preserve the former glory of Hanseatic cities in their original beauty. The church was named after King Saint Olav, who played a key role in converting Norway to Christianity and was later canonized.

The church’s interior is built in impressive Gothic style, with high vaults and beautiful stained glass windows. The main altar and pulpit are also original medieval works. Town Hall Square

Viru Gate

One of the best-preserved parts of Tallinn’s medieval defense system and one of the city’s most iconic sights.

Built in the 14th century, the gate originally protected the city’s eastern entrance and was one of the main routes for Hanseatic merchants. The gate’s name comes from nearby Viru Street, which has always been an important trade route.

Passing through the gate, visitors enter the heart of Tallinn’s Old Town, where the medieval atmosphere immediately captivates them. Around the towers, remnants of the medieval city wall can still be found, along which we can take pleasant walks. Built in the 15th-16th centuries, the tower’s name comes from the Estonian „kuld” (gold), referring to its protection of the city’s wealthiest part. The tower’s specialty is that its wall thickness reaches four meters in places, showing how seriously defense was taken in the Middle Ages. The tower presents the history of medieval armament and urban planning across multiple levels.

Kadriorg Palace

Tallinn’s most elegant Baroque building was built by Russian Tsar Peter I in honor of his beloved, Empress Catherine.

Built in the 18th century according to plans by Italian architect Niccolò Michetti, the palace is a masterpiece of contemporary European court architecture. The palace’s name means Catherine’s Garden in German, well reflecting the close relationship between the building and the surrounding park. The building’s façade is decorated with rich stucco ornamentation, while the interior spaces are adorned with magnificent frescoes and gilded details.

Today the palace houses the Art Museum of Estonia’s Western art collection, where 16th-20th century European paintings and sculptures can be viewed. The exhibition includes works by Flemish, German, and Russian masters.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

Tallinn’s most imposing Orthodox church is located on Toompea Castle Hill.

Consecrated in 1900 at the end of the 19th century, the cathedral was built during the Russian occupation and was named in honor of Prince Alexander Nevsky, the patron saint of Novgorod. The building was constructed in typical Russian Orthodox style, with five onion-shaped domes and rich gilding. The church’s construction also served as a political message: it symbolized Russian power’s presence in Estonia.

The church’s interior is stunning: gilded iconostasis, magnificent frescoes, and colorful stained glass windows decorate it. Among the architectural details, the rich mosaics and handmade icons, which are works of Russian masters, stand out. Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform

One of Tallinn’s most spectacular panoramic terraces is located on Toompea Castle Hill.

The viewpoint, meaning „behind the court”, got its name from the nearby former courthouse building. Due to the terrace’s special position, it provides a perfect view of Tallinn’s Old Town, modern districts, and the distant sea. During the conversion of the old factory buildings, special attention was paid to preserving the original industrial character while incorporating modern functions. Wooden Houses of Valgevase

One of Tallinn’s most charming old districts, where examples of 19th-20th century Estonian wooden architecture can be found.

Valgevase Street and its surroundings offer visitors a special time journey: the colorful wooden houses, flower-decorated gardens, and quiet streets evoke the atmosphere of old Tallinn. Stroomi Beach

Located on the Baltic Sea shore, the beach attracts bathers during summer months with its wide sandy shore and clean water. The beach’s surroundings are carefully designed: walkways, playgrounds, courts, and picnic areas are available to visitors.

Stroomi Park, stretching behind the beach, offers additional recreational opportunities: bicycle paths, running tracks, and wooded walking trails. In winter, when the sea freezes, the area provides special winter sports opportunities.

Estonian Open Air Museum

In the museum, Estonian folk architecture and traditions come to life.

On the 84-hectare area, more than 70 buildings from different regions of Estonia can be found, presenting 18th-20th century rural life. Complete villages have been reconstructed on the museum grounds with original buildings: peasant houses, windmills, schools, and churches. Each building contains period furniture, tools, and household items that provide an authentic picture of Estonian rural life.

Its specialty is that it’s not just a static exhibition: periodic programs demonstrate traditional craft techniques, hold folk music concerts, and prepare traditional foods. Visitors can try old crafts, become acquainted with Estonian folk costumes and traditions.

Seaplane Harbour Maritime Museum

One of Tallinn’s most modern and interactive museums presents Estonia’s maritime heritage.

The museum is housed in a former seaplane hangar, whose imposing concrete dome is an architectural sight in itself. The exhibition centers around the Soviet submarine named Lembit, through which visitors can walk and experience the conditions of submarine life. Among the museum’s other special equipment is the icebreaker ship Suur Tõll and numerous historical watercraft.

Interactive exhibitions allow visitors to virtually control ships, become acquainted with navigation secrets, and try maritime equipment. The museum pays special attention to the Baltic Sea’s history and ecology. For children, separate playgrounds and educational programs are offered where they can learn about the sea world while having fun. Kumu Art Museum

Estonia’s largest and most significant art museum is a masterpiece of contemporary architecture.

The building designed by Finnish architect Pekka Vapaavuori opened in 2006 and the building itself is a work of art: the modern glass-steel structure harmoniously fits into the natural environment of Kadriorg Park. The museum’s name is an abbreviation of „Kunstimuuseum” and is the most important guardian of Estonia’s artistic heritage.

The collection spans from the 18th century to the present, encompassing Estonian art and showing Baltic German, Russian, and international influences as well. The exhibition chronologically follows the development of Estonian art from Romanticism through the Soviet era to contemporary art. Tallinn has a northern continental climate, which means moderate summers and cold, snowy winters, with the moderating effect of the Baltic Sea’s proximity.

Spring (March-May):

Spring gradually warms up, with average temperatures ranging between 2-15°C. Snow is still frequent in March, but from April it becomes pleasant to walk in the city. In May, the beginning of white nights provides a special experience when the sun sets only for a short time. Precipitation is moderate, and nature’s awakening provides a beautiful sight in the parks.

Summer (June-August):

Summer is pleasant and relatively dry, with average temperatures of 15-25°C. This is the brightest time of the year when, due to white nights, it’s light from 4 AM to 11 PM. Precipitation usually occurs in the form of short showers. It’s an ideal time for sightseeing, outdoor programs, and beach activities.

Autumn (September-November):

Rundāle Palace

The magnificent baroque castle referred to as the „Versailles of Latvia” is located in the southern part of the country, near Bauska. The aristocratic residence built in the 18th century is one of Latvia’s most impressive historical buildings.

The castle was designed by Bartolomeo Rastrelli, the Italian architect of the Russian imperial court, who also created the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. The castle’s 138 rooms preserve stunning gilding, painted ceilings, period furniture, and artistic creations that maintain the once luxurious lifestyle of the Baltic nobility. Its most spectacular rooms are the Golden Room and the White Room, whose richly decorated stucco ceilings and walls represent unique artistic value.

The castle is surrounded by a 10-hectare French-style baroque garden, which with its rose garden, fountains, and geometric design forms an integral part of the castle complex. The rose garden is home to more than 2,400 rose varieties, making it one of the largest such collections in Europe. In summer, the park hosts special musical events and costumed performances that bring 18th-century court life to life.

Jūrmala

Latvia’s most popular seaside resort is just 25 kilometers from Riga.

The nearly 33-kilometer-long white sandy beach and special pine forests create a unique microclimate. The beach is wide with shallow water, making it particularly popular with families.

Jūrmala is actually a chain of smaller settlements that have merged over the years. The most famous part of the city is Majori, where the vibrant pedestrian street, Jomas iela, is located with numerous restaurants, cafes, and shops.

The city is also famous for its characteristic wooden architecture; the carved wooden villas from the 19th and early 20th centuries preserve the style of the elite vacation homes of Tsarist Russia. Gauja National Park

Latvia’s largest and oldest national park is often referred to as „Latvian Switzerland” due to its picturesque river valleys and hills.

The park’s main natural value is the Gauja Valley, which is Latvia’s deepest and most spectacular river valley. Along the winding path of the river, sandstone rocks, caves, and spectacular gorges have formed over the millennia. The Zvārte Rock is one of the most well-known formations. Daugavpils

Latvia’s second-largest city has been ruled by various powers throughout history – Poles, Russians, Swedes – so it has an extremely diverse cultural heritage.

Its most significant architectural monument is the monumental Daugavpils Fortress, built in the 19th century and one of the largest military structures in Eastern Europe. The fortress now functions as a cultural center, housing museums, galleries, and workshops. Its special value is the Mark Rothko Art Center, which commemorates the world-famous expressionist painter, a native of the city, with original works and interactive exhibitions.

The downtown of Daugavpils boasts elegant 19th-century buildings where different architectural styles – classicist, eclectic, Art Nouveau – can be seen. Turaida Castle

The red-brick castle towering in the Gauja River Valley near Sigulda was built in the 13th century to protect the Riga Bishopric. The name „Turaida” means „God’s Garden” in the Livonian language.

The highest point of the medieval castle is the 38-meter main tower, from the top of which a breathtaking panorama opens up to the Gauja Valley and the surrounding forests. The museum exhibition in the castle presents the life of the Livonian knights, medieval warfare, and the history of the castle over the centuries. The Turaida Museum Reserve is located on the castle hill, covering more than 42 hectares, and includes numerous historical buildings, monuments, and archaeological sites.

The Dainu Hill, a sculpture park that represents the world of Latvian folk songs and legends, stretches near the castle. In the center of the park stands the statue of the Rose of Turaida, one of the most well-known figures in Latvian folklore, who has become a symbol of fidelity due to her tragic love story. The medieval wooden church, which is one of Latvia’s oldest wooden architectural monuments and is still a popular wedding venue today, is located on the castle grounds.

Kuldīga

The small town on the banks of the Venta River is one of Latvia’s most charming settlements, where time seems to have stopped in the 17th-18th centuries.

Its main attraction is one of Europe’s widest waterfalls, the Ventas Rumba, which is 249 meters wide, although only 1.8-2 meters high. In summer, it is a special sight when salmon try to jump up the waterfall.

The historical center of the town, with its brick and wooden churches, narrow cobblestone streets, and red-roofed houses, has been preserved as it was built hundreds of years ago. It’s no coincidence that it has served as a filming location for numerous movies.

Slītere National Park

The national park located in the northwestern part of Latvia, on the Kurzeme Peninsula, is one of the most pristine areas of the Baltic Sea coastline.

Its uniqueness is that land, sea, and the Kurzeme Lagoon meet here, encompassing extremely diverse habitats. One of the park’s most unusual natural formations is the „Blue Mountains”, a 20-30 meter high, steep cliff of the former coastline that formed 10,000 years ago.

One of its symbols is the Slītere Lighthouse, built in 1849, which now serves as a lookout tower and museum. It offers a wonderful view of the surrounding forests and the sea.

The Liv Coast, a narrow strip of coast in the northern part of the park, represents a special cultural value: this was the last dwelling place of the ancient Liv people, whose language and culture are an important part of Latvia’s heritage.

Cape Kolka

The northernmost point of Latvia, where the Baltic Sea meets the Gulf of Riga.

The specialty of Cape Kolka is that under certain weather conditions, the meeting of the waters of the two seas is clearly visible, where waters of different colors and temperatures form a boundary line.

Cēsis Castle

One of Latvia’s oldest and best-preserved medieval castles is located in the picturesque town of Cēsis. The fortress built in the 13th century was the headquarters of the Livonian Order and played an important role in the history of the region.

The castle complex consists of two main parts: the ruins of the medieval knights’ house and the newer, 18th-century mansion. Among the ruins of the old castle, the well-preserved castle chapel, the knights’ hall, and the massive defensive tower are particularly interesting. The Cēsis Historical and Art Museum is located in the newer mansion, presenting comprehensive exhibitions on the history of the castle and the region.

Visiting the castle is a special experience, as visitors can explore the dark castle corridors and cellars with traditional candle lamps, as they did in the Middle Ages.

The town of Cēsis itself is a historical gem, with a medieval street structure, St. John’s Church, and a charming marketplace. The city boasts a rich cultural life, especially in summer, when numerous festivals and cultural events attract visitors.

Liepāja

Latvia’s third-largest city is often called „the city of wind”.

One of its most important attractions is the „Karostas” military prison and fortress, which was built during Tsarist Russia and later functioned as a Soviet military base. Today, this „prison museum” offers a special experience for visitors, who can even spend a night in the austere cells.

The pride of the city is the Holy Trinity Cathedral. With its baroque style and monumental organ – which was the largest organ in the world at its time – it offers an impressive sight. In the „Karosta” district, you can find the former Russian-Orthodox St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral, whose golden domes are visible from afar.

The 8-kilometer-long white sandy beach surrounding the city is particularly popular during the summer months, but kiteboard and windsurf enthusiasts visit the windy beach during other times of the year as well.

Rēzekne

The city referred to as the „Heart of Latgale” is an important cultural center of the Latgale region, which is historically, linguistically, and culturally distinct from the rest of Latvia.

The most important symbol of the city is the statue of „Latgale Mary,” also known as „United Latgale” which symbolizes the liberation and reunification of the region. The cityscape is defined by the monumental, red-brick Sacred Heart Cathedral, which is one of the largest Catholic churches in the Baltic States. The Rēzekne Green Synagogue preserves the city’s Jewish heritage, being one of the few synagogues in Latvia that survived World War II.

The Latgale Cultural and Historical Museum provides a comprehensive picture of the region’s rich folk art traditions, ceramics, and folk culture.

Ventspils

One of Latvia’s most important port cities.

One of the pride of the city is Ventspils Castle, which was built in the 13th century for the Livonian Order and now houses the Ventspils Museum. The museum’s interactive exhibitions present the history of the city, maritime trade, and the Baltic-German cultural heritage.
