We usually only talk about the most popular Greek islands and beaches. However, there are many islands that are just as wonderful as Santorini or Zakynthos. Now I’ll introduce 16 lesser-known Greek islands that are worth visiting!

16 lesser-known Greek islands

Symi

It’s a member of the Dodecanese Greek island group, located 40 km from Rhodes. It lies in the immediate vicinity of the Turkish coast, with the shortest distance being 8 km.

Its 58.1 km² surface is mostly covered by barren mountains. Its coastline is winding, with several excellent natural harbors.

The must-see attraction on the island is the Panormitis Monastery of Saint Michael the Archangel. The monastery houses an icon of Saint Michael the Archangel, patron saint of islands and sailors, so it’s no coincidence that sailors from all over the world make pilgrimages here.

Its capital, Symi town, is Greece’s most impressive harbor. From here, 375 steps lead up to the old town, where you can wander through alleys between houses and cafes.

The island is most easily reached by boat from Rhodes. For those vacationing in Rhodes, it makes a perfect day trip.

Naxos

The largest member of the Cyclades island group, in the central part of the Aegean Sea between Santorini and Mykonos.

This is the greenest Cycladic island. Its highest point is Mount Zas (1008 meters), where according to legend Zeus was raised in a cave.

It was the center of the ancient Cycladic civilization. This is evident in the remains of historical buildings: the Temple of Demeter, the Colossus of Dionysus, or the iconic landmark of the capital, the Portara, which was erected in honor of the god Apollo.

Of course, there’s no shortage of excellent beaches on Naxos. Paralia Mikri Vigla or Paralia Agios Prokopios welcome visitors with golden fine sandy beaches.

Don’t miss tasting kitron, an alcoholic drink made from the lemon-like citron.

The gate erected in honour of the god Apollo

Folegandros

A small island in the Aegean Sea, the southwestern member of the Cyclades island group. Its population is only around 700. It lies northwest of Santorini, about 35 km away, making it worth visiting during a vacation there.

Its area is small, only 32 km², with a length of 7 km. There are three inhabited settlements on the island. The landscape is extremely varied, with many rock walls and a large cave.

The capital itself, Chora, is built on the edge of a ravine. When visiting, be sure to go up the serpentine road to the Panagia church, which offers a wonderful view.

Folegandros is not yet an island of mass tourism, which is why its true value lies in its pristine landscape, excellent beaches, and clear blue sea water.

Rocky landscape characterises the island

Delos

This small island is located in the middle of the circle formed by the Cyclades island group, 2.5 km west of Mykonos. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990. It doesn’t have outstanding beaches; Delos is ideal for lovers of ancient monuments.

It was regarded as a sacred place even before Greek mythology placed the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis here. As a cultic site, Delos gained an importance that its natural resources would never have made possible.

There are several myths about the island’s origin. According to some, Poseidon created the island with a strike of his trident, then Apollo stretched out the island with threads. According to another legend, the island broke off from Sicily or fell here from the sky.

The significance of the island comes from the cult of Apollo, who was born on this island along with his twin sister Artemis.

Ancient structures are also prominent on Delos. Greece’s largest excavation site, a garden of ruins, is located here. Apollo’s temple is very popular among Greeks, as well as the Terrace of the Lions, where several stone lion statues stand.

An island rich in ancient monuments

Paxos

Also known as Paxí, it’s located 11 kilometers from Corfu and 20 kilometers from the city of Parga. It’s only 10 kilometers long and 4 kilometers wide.

It’s also called the island of endless olive groves. Its western part, unlike the eastern part, is full of caves and sharp rocks.

Legend has it that it was once part of Corfu. Poseidon (god of the sea) was looking for a quiet place to live with his beloved Amphitrite. For this reason, he detached the southernmost part of the huge trident, thus creating Paxos.

Paxos’ capital, Gaios, is situated in a naturally spectacular location on the eastern side of the island: two verdant islands rise from the sea opposite the settlement.

Paxos has wonderful beaches

Samos

Located in the eastern part of the Aegean Sea, right near the Turkish coast. It’s famous for its lush, green landscapes, as it’s one of the most fertile islands in the Mediterranean region, where olive trees, vineyards, and pine forests cover the hillsides.

Its significant settlement is Pythagoreio, named after the famous ancient mathematician Pythagoras, who was born here. Near the city is the impressive Eupalinos Tunnel, one of the engineering wonders of ancient times, and the Heraion, an ancient temple built in honor of the goddess Hera, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Samos is also famous for its special wines, especially the sweet Muscat wine, which has been recognized worldwide for centuries. The island’s beaches are also excellent, such as Kokkari, Lemonakia, or Tsamadou, where crystal clear water and picturesque surroundings await visitors.

Famous wine-growing island

Ikaria

The island near the Turkish coast derives its name from the mythology that Icarus, son of Daedalus, fell into the sea at its shores.

The island is famous for „long life”: statistics show that the proportion of people over 90 is much higher than in Europe.

The island is quite „long” compared to the other islands listed: the two opposite points are accessible by a 55 km car journey.

Although it has wonderful beaches, it’s recommended for those who like to immerse themselves in the „rural” Greek style and like to visit secluded, quiet places.

Andros

The northernmost and one of the greenest islands of the Cyclades island group, located in the Aegean Sea, about a two-hour ferry ride from Athens.

The island’s capital is Chora, which exudes a special atmosphere with its elegant neoclassical buildings, museums, and picturesque streets. Here you’ll find the famous Goulandris Museum of Contemporary Art, which showcases significant Greek and international works.

Andros’ natural beauty is impressive. Numerous streams, valleys, and waterfalls can be found here, such as the Pithara waterfalls, often called „the oasis of Andros”.

The beaches are also diverse. Golden Sand Beach with its fine sandy shore is ideal for relaxation. The Tis Grias to Pidima, or „The Old Woman’s Jump” beach is popular among visitors due to its special rock formation.

Natural attractions abound

Skyros

The easternmost and largest island of the Sporades island group in the Aegean Sea.

The southern part of the island is mountainous, barren, rocky, and uninhabited, while the northern part’s surface is covered in many places by lush vegetation and pine forest.

It has two popular places: Linaria, where the ferries arrive, and Skyros town on the eastern side. The latter is almost mandatory to visit, with the city center being the castle standing on the mountain peak.

Skyros is famous for its small-sized horses bred here, as well as its furniture carving technique.

Patmos

A small Greek island in the southern part of the Aegean Sea, belonging to the Dodecanese island group.

Although relatively small in size, its historical and religious significance is enormous, as this is where the Apostle John wrote the Book of Revelation, which is why the island is often referred to as „the holy island.” The most important attraction is the Cave of St. John, located at the place where, according to tradition, the apostle received his visions. Above the cave stands the Monastery of Saint John, established in the 11th century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The island’s main settlement is Chora, which radiates a true Greek atmosphere with its picturesque white houses, narrow cobblestone streets, and traditional tavernas. Another important port town is Skala, where most visitors arrive and which is considered the island’s tourism center.

Its religious significance is great

Gavdos

Located 36 km south of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea. It’s the southernmost island of Greece and all of Europe. A chair marks the southernmost point on the island.

We can safely say that this is where one finds peace. Its population is about 100 people, with only about 30 living in the island’s seat, Kastrin.

Rumor has it that this was the island where the nymph Calypso held Odysseus captive as he was returning home from the Trojan War.

It has three outstandingly beautiful beaches, all on the northern part: Sarakiniko, Potamos, and Agios Ioannis.

The island can be reached by boats departing from the southern part of Crete.

Amorgos

Located in the Aegean Sea, a member of the Cyclades island group, about 25 km southeast of Naxos.

It’s an elongated island, with steep rocks rising in its southeastern part, while its southwestern side is dotted with charming small beaches. Due to its remote location, it’s excellently suited for peaceful relaxation.

Its most beautiful attraction is Panagia Hozoviotissa, which is almost „glued” to a rock. Standing beside the large rock walls, one can enjoy a wonderful view of the sea.

Luc Besson filmed „The Big Blue” with Jean Reno on Amorgos.

Perfect for a relaxing holiday

Milos

A member of the Cyclades island group, between Santorini and the Peloponnese Peninsula.

It’s famous for the armless Aphrodite statue, which was discovered near the island, in the sea, in 1820. The statue is exhibited at the Louvre in Paris.

The island was formed as a result of volcanic activity. One of Greece’s 4 active volcanoes is located in the middle of Milos.

Perhaps you may be familiar with its most famous beach, Sarakiniko. It’s a popular photographic subject, as its rocky shore looks like we’re on the Moon.

Syros

Located in the Aegean Sea, a member of the Cyclades island group. It lies about 35 km west of Mykonos, close to the Greek mainland. Therefore, it’s among the easily accessible lesser-known islands.

The island had its heyday in the first half of the 19th century. The island’s capital, Ermoupolis, was a rich, bustling port in the era of the first steamships, almost taking over Delos’ ancient role.

Traces of ancient Greek history can also be discovered here. We find several excellent buildings in the downtown of the capital, Ermoupoli. The Archaeological Museum also showcases the island’s historical monuments.

And of course, Syros island is also good in terms of beaches. Especially in the southern part of the island, there are secluded, wonderful beaches.

Chios

Located in the North Aegean Islands region, not far from the Turkish coast. It’s sometimes written as Khíos. It’s Greece’s 5th largest island.

The famous plant of Chios is the Chios mastic tree, which only exudes resin here. Its resin (mastic) is used to flavor Greek mastiha, and in Turkey, it’s used to make the chewy ice cream called dondurma.

There’s also historical significance to the resin. In the 14th century, it was a colony of the state of Genoa, when castles were built to store the resin. These castles are now attractions of the island.

These castles were also villages. The most beautiful such settlement is Mesta, which stands almost entirely in its old splendor.

The Nea Moni monastery from the 11th century is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, along with the monasteries of Daphni and Hosios Loukas.

Among its beaches, Mavra Volia stands out, offering a wonderful sight with its large black pebbles.

Hydra

Also known as Idra, it’s one of the Saronic Islands. It’s separated from the Peloponnese Peninsula by the narrow Gulf of Hydra.

In ancient times, it was called Hydrea, which means water and refers to the springs found on the island.

Interestingly, transportation is carried out by donkeys and water taxis, as motor vehicles, except for garbage trucks, are prohibited on the island. However, the inhabited area is relatively small, so most people simply walk.

The island’s main settlement is the port town of Hydra on the northern coast, which is crescent-shaped, with restaurants and shops in the middle. Steep streets lead upward in all directions from here to the hillside. At the two ends of the crescent stand forts with cannons, which once protected the harbor. Characteristic windmills can be seen from afar at the left end of the crescent.

For the most beautiful view, visit the Prophitis Ilias monastery standing on a mountain peak, which can be reached from the capital.

Zakynthos is one of the best known and most popular Greek islands, with wonderful beaches and attractions.

Zakynthos Island is located in the Ionian Sea, in western Greece, west of the Peloponnese peninsula coast. Thanks to its natural beauty and picturesque capital, the Venetians called it the Flower of the East. It was named after Zakynthos, the son of Dardanus in Greek mythology.

It’s worth renting a motorcycle or car, which makes it easy to explore Zakynthos.

Only buses operate on the island, all departing from the capital. From there, you can reach most places. Keep in mind that there are only a few services per day, and barely any on weekends. Information about bus transportation can be found here!

Zakynthos attractions

Zakinthos (Zante)

Unlike the centers of other islands, the capital of the island doesn’t offer many attractions. Many buildings were damaged in the 1953 earthquake, but fortunately, the rebuilding was done in the old Venetian style.

It’s worth visiting the Byzantine Museum in the center, where works by El Greco are displayed.

At the entrance to the harbor is the Orthodox Church of Agios Dionysios, where the patron saint of Zakynthos is buried.

Beautiful setting in the capital

Laganas

Zakynthos’ tourist center, dominated by nightlife. There are numerous accommodations, bars, and restaurants within a few kilometers.

It doesn’t have much Greek character; it’s typically chosen by those looking to party!

The island’s most popular beach is also here. Laganas Beach is 9 km long, with brown sand, and its water is shallow and deepens slowly. This makes it ideal for families with children. Additionally, there are many sports opportunities here.

Best known part of Zakynthos Laganas

Kalamaki

Located east of the airport, this area is quieter and more peaceful than Laganas, but you can still find entertainment venues here.

The aforementioned Laganas Beach extends all the way here, so you can also relax on the sandy beach in this area.

Agios Sostis

This settlement is located west of Laganas. It’s also a popular tourist spot with a whole row of taverns and bars.

Don’t miss Cameo Island! You can reach it on foot via a small wooden bridge, the Agios Sostis Bridge. On the way, you can see many marine animals due to the rocky seabed. It’s actually a small elevation, but the view of the bay is beautiful. Locals call it the disco island, as a disco awaits tourists in the evenings.

The bridge and the small disco island

Marathonisi Island

From the port of Agios Sostis, you can reach Turtle Island by boat. A special feature is the glass-bottom boats, allowing you to see the aquatic wildlife along the way.

The biggest attraction is the loggerhead sea turtle (caretta caretta), which lays its eggs in this area. Of course, the island also has a sandy beach.

The island is famous for its turtles

Vassilikos Peninsula

Located in the southeastern part of the island, this peninsula has several excellent beaches.

Its most famous beach is Gerakas, which is about 1 km long with sand. Its water deepens slowly, so you can walk quite far out, from where there’s a great view of Laganas Bay.

Many also like Dafni, Porto Roma, and Banana Beach.

Here is the Sea Turtle and Wildlife information center, which was established to protect turtles.

Gerakas coastline is visited by many

Tsilivi

Traveling northwest from the capital, you’ll find this settlement. Its sandy beach is a popular coastal area, surrounded by many bars and taverns.

On the edge of the town is Tsilivi Water Park, where adults can also have a good time thanks to long slides. Don’t expect too many slides, but it can be included as a one-day program. Information can be found here!

Alykanas

North of Tsilivi, we find this charming settlement, next to Alykes. It has become one of Zakynthos’ most popular holiday destinations, situated among hills and olive groves.

Alykanas Beach, together with Alykes Beach, forms a long sandy beach, which is one of the island’s cleanest and most beautiful beaches. It’s also popular among water sports enthusiasts.

Navagio Bay

If you haven’t heard this name, you’ve certainly seen it! It’s not only one of the leading attractions in Zakynthos but also one of the most famous locations in the entire country!

It was originally called St. George’s Bay. The iconic shipwreck stands in the bay, which is protected by high white limestone cliffs behind and on two sides.

The combination of white cliffs and blue water gives the bay its wonderful, postcard-like panorama.

It got its current name because on October 2, 1980, the cargo ship Panagotis had an accident here due to bad weather and technical failure. According to some rumors, the ship was smuggling cigarettes and ran aground while fleeing from the Greek Coast Guard. That’s why the place is also called Smuggler’s Cove. Whether this is actually true, we don’t know, it might just be a marketing ploy.

You can reach the top of the high cliffs above the bay by car, from where there’s an excellent view of the bay and the beach area. Presumably, everyone has seen this in pictures before; it’s one of the most photographed places.

In 2018, the rock section behind the ship collapsed. In 2023, authorities banned boats from docking!

One of the most beautiful Greek beaches

Blue Caves

These caves are located at the northern tip of the island, where excursionists are taken by boats.

Over the centuries, the sea has carved out many smaller and larger caves in the limestone rocks, where sunlight enters through small openings and paints the water a beautiful turquoise blue. That’s why they’re called blue caves.

The sun hitting the caves „creates” a beautiful colour

Keri Caves

Similar to the Blue Caves, this formation is located at the southern tip of Zakynthos, on the Keri Peninsula.

They can only be accessed by boat and are a main attraction in many organized excursions. It’s a perfect location for swimming and diving.

Xigia Caves

On the eastern shore, there’s a small beach here where sulfur seeps from the caves into the sea. Because of this, the water has beneficial effects on joint ailments, but you have to endure the slightly pungent smell.

It’s not in a developed area, but you can find a few taverns and accommodations on the section above the beach.

Porto Limnionas Beach

This quiet beach is located on the western shore, so you don’t have to expect crowds.

It has a rocky shore, but an inlet bay gives it a fantastic atmosphere. Above the entrance to the bay, there’s a single restaurant with a great view.

Porto Roxa Beach

Located not far south from Limnionas Beach, it’s a similarly rocky, cliffy beach. There are several restaurants and bars here.

There’s only one spot for jumping, making it a very good little beach section for those seeking a bit of adventure. Additionally, the underwater wildlife is fantastic in this area.

Exo Chora

The attraction of this small village near the western coast is an old olive tree.

There’s a legend that the tree is already 2000 years old. This isn’t proven, but the olive tree still bears fruit. If we’re in the area, it’s definitely worth stopping for a picture!

Anafonitria Monastery

There are numerous monasteries on Zakynthos, of which Anafonitria is the most famous.

The story of the monastery’s construction is full of mystery. It was founded in the 15th century when a local resident accidentally discovered an icon in the rocks that emitted a faint light. The light shone and re-ignited, and to the surprised residents, it seemed as if the icon was screaming (hence the name, as „Anafonitria” means „screaming”). A small chapel was built on the site, then a monastery.

During the strong earthquake of 1953, when almost every building on the island collapsed, this monastery was not damaged at all, which further strengthened people’s belief in the miracle.

At the entrance to the church, there’s a bastion with a bell tower. The three-nave monastery with a wooden roof is a wonderful building.

Many people have heard of this wonderful Greek island, but unfortunately, they don’t know much about it. Yet Thassos, with its coastline, beaches, and natural values, is definitely one of Greece’s most beautiful places! It inspires anyone to visit at least once.

About Thassos

Thassos is Greece’s northernmost island, located in the Aegean Sea. Nearly circular in shape, it’s just 22 km long and 25 km wide. Although it can get hot in the summer, the island remains very green throughout the season, earning it the title of the greenest Greek island (It is also the name given to Corfu).

Those looking for partying or Greek cultural monuments should not come here! This is an island of tranquility, offering beautiful beaches and natural attractions. Those who have visited often say that Thassos is a small but exciting island!

The island’s natural diversity is well represented by its highest peak, Ypsarion, standing at 1204 meters, offering stunning views. The main road runs along the coast, providing access to the island’s interior via a higher-level road. Since circumnavigating the island is about 100 km, it’s worth renting a car for a few days from a local rental to explore everything.

The island’s capital is Limenas, also known as Thassos Town, located in the north, where most tourists arrive.

Thassos attractions

Limenas

The capital city has a great atmosphere. Its old harbor area offers a typical Greek vibe with cobbled streets full of gift shops and restaurants.

The city is filled with ancient relics, which can be viewed for free. Its main attraction is the Archaeological Museum of Thassos, considered one of the most important regional museums in Greece, showcasing centuries of creations.

On the outskirts of the city is an ancient theatre. The auditorium faces the sea, so not only the building itself but also the view is fantastic.

The city’s northeastern part has a beach. The 300-meter-long sandy-pebbly beach offers sunbed and umbrella rentals.

The capital has a typical Greek atmosphere

Limenaria

The most significant place in the south, it’s a good starting point for nearby attractions and beaches. It offers many accommodations, tavernas, and shops for tourists.

Potos

A few km from Limenaria, Potos is similarly developed.

The town almost entirely spans a beach, lined with many cafes and restaurants. It’s very atmospheric to sit out in the evening and enjoy the Thassos lifestyle.

Theologos

If you want to visit a place that’s not on the coast, go to Theologos! It was once the island’s capital.

It’s not rich in attractions, but the narrow streets, the kindness of the locals, and the view compensate for the journey!

Take a walk in the old capital

Panagia

This picturesque village is located in the northeast of the island.

Whitewashed houses built over centuries, winding streets and colourful balconies decorated with flowers make this village a delight. There are also beautiful natural attractions in the area, such as waterfalls and olive groves. In the olive oil museum you can see how olive oil is made and used.

Ypsario

If you’re seeking breathtaking views, head to the 1204-meter-high peak!

Good stamina is required, as the hiking trail starts from the village of Potamia, situated at 60 meters above sea level. The path is quite steep, but thankfully marked with red dots to guide hikers.

The view from the top over the island, including Golden Beach and Skala Potamia Beach, is fantastic. The hike takes about 7-8 hours to complete!

Beaches in Thassos

Despite its small size, Thassos has numerous beaches, some of which are hidden gems. Many reports suggest that veering off the main road often leads to fantastic beach spots. Here, I’ll introduce the most famous ones!

Makryammos

This beach is said to resemble those of the Caribbean. Located southeast of the capital, this resort village is a popular holiday spot.

Although the beach is pay-to-enter, the view compensates for it. The water is clean, turquoise, and shallow, surrounded by pine trees and rocks.

Giola Lagoon

Near the village of Astris in the south, Giola is a bit off the beaten path, but it’s perhaps Thassos’s most beautiful attraction. Inaccessible by car, it’s about 700 meters from the main road.

Its beauty lies in the rock-carved lagoon, which is not only visually stunning but also has warmer water than the sea. The water is crystal clear.

However, be cautious and avoid jumping off the rocks, as underwater stones can cause injuries.

Aliki Beach

Located in a picturesque bay in the south, this beach has a sandy-pebbly shoreline and offers an amazing experience.

Climbing up a trail to the ruins of an ancient marble quarry, you’re greeted with breathtaking views.

Paradise Beach

On the east side, near the village of Kinira, lies one of the most popular beaches.

Its name comes from its tropical character, with fine sandy shores and water hues of green and blue, reminiscent of an exotic beach.

Saliara Beach (Marble Beach)

5 km southeast of the capital, Marble Beach is one of Thassos’s most famous beaches. A similar beach, Porto Vathi Beach, is accessible 500 meters further. Both are reached via a dirt road, which is not in the best condition.

Both are unique for their white marble pebbles covering the shore. The beach has a café and offers sunbed and umbrella rentals.

The beach is covered in white marble

Golden Beach

Located between the villages of Chrisi Akti and Chrisi Ammoudia on the east side, the beach is known for its golden sands (Chrisi means gold).

As they are resort villages, this is a well-developed area compared to the rest of the island.

Skala Potamia Beach

South of Chrisi Akti, you’ll find the island’s largest beach.

The sandy shore is enhanced by the scenic backdrop, including Thassos’s highest peak. Naturally, the beach is well-developed, making it perfect for families.

Psili Ammos Beach

Easily accessible, just 5 km from Potos village along the main road.

The beach has fine sand and is well-developed. It’s a popular spot, especially recommended for young beachgoers.

The Greek island off the Turkish coast is also popular with Hungarians. Not only can you relax and enjoy the beach, but Rhodes also offers a remarkable experience in terms of attractions!

Rhodes is located in the Aegean Sea, near the southwestern coast of Anatolia. It’s the fourth-largest Greek island (after Crete, Euboea, and Lesbos) and the largest of the Dodecanese island group.

Its coastline stretches over 200 km, with grey sandy and pebbly beaches on the west coast and sandy coves in front of limestone cliffs on the east coast.

Rhodes attractions

Rhodes City

Located in the northeastern tip of the island, the old town is exceptionally well-preserved and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. Regardless of where you’re staying on the island, visiting the old town is a must.

City Walls

The medieval city walls stretch about 4 km, averaging 12 meters in thickness.

Multiple gates lead into the old town, with the Amboise Gate, built in 1512 under Grand Master Emery D’Amboise, being particularly notable.

Palace of the Grand Master

The most famous building in the old town, originally built in the 14th century by Hélion de Villeneuve, the then Grand Master of the Knights of St. John. Successive Grand Masters expanded and beautified it.

The palace took its current form during the 1930-39 restoration under the governance of Mario de Vecchi. Italian architects used medieval blueprints, though they interpreted them quite freely. After Greece regained the island from Italy in 1948, the palace was converted into a museum. The upper floors are preserved in their Italian reconstruction state, while the ground floor hosts an extensive exhibition covering Rhodes’ 2400-year history.

Street of the Knights (Odos Ippoton)

Running east-west, this six-meter-wide street is bridged by buildings in two places. Its western end is at the Palace of the Grand Master.

Originally built by the Knights Hospitaller, it includes the inns of different linguistic communities, such as Provençal, Catalan, and Castilian.

The street’s northern side features the French Inn, adorned with the coats of arms of Grand Masters Pierre d’Aubusson and Philippe de Villiers de L’Isle-Adam, while the southern side boasts Prince Djem’s House.

The eastern end of the street is home to the Rhodes Archaeological Museum, housed in the former hospital.

Clock Tower

For a great view of the city, head to this tower. The entrance fee includes a free drink at the tower’s café.

Acropolis

The ancient city’s acropolis is about 2 km southwest of Rhodes City, on Monte Smith hill.

Here you’ll find remnants of the temples of Zeus and Athena, the Apollo temple, and the ancient theater and stadium.

Mandraki Harbor

Not the harbor itself, but the three medieval windmills located there are worth a visit. A small fort named St. Nicholas stands at the harbor’s end. Though small, it’s worth a look.

Two deer statues stand at the harbor’s end, speculated to be where the Colossus of Rhodes once stood.

Ialysos (Trianda)

The second-largest city, located between the capital and the airport.

It boasts beautiful beaches, numerous entertainment venues, restaurants, and shops, making it a true tourist paradise.

Filerimos

Ialysos has a long history, evidenced by the ruins on nearby Filerimos Hill.

The most famous attraction here is the monastery, founded in the 15th century by the Knights of Saint John in Gothic style.

Walking along a tree-lined path, you’ll see stations of the cross leading to a large white cross at the top. It’s also an excellent viewpoint with fantastic views, and due to its proximity to the airport, you can watch planes landing and taking off.

Faliraki

Primarily recommended for young people due to its numerous entertainment options. It has a beautiful sandy beach lined with many tavernas, bars, and restaurants.

WaterPark

Located north of the city (Ammoudes), the WaterPark features slides of various steepness, a wave pool, water bubbles, and a paddling pool for the little ones. The view from the slides to the sea is stunning.

Note that free buses run from Rhodes City’s Mandraki port, and there are also buses from the southern part of the island.

All information can be found here!

AquaWorld

A small aquarium in the center of Faliraki, showcasing various marine creatures.

Visitors have the opportunity to touch baby sharks, rays, and fish.

Anthony Quinn Bay

Named after the popular American actor Anthony Quinn, this bay lies south of Faliraki. The pebbly-rocky beach is quite small, hence it can be crowded during peak season. The water gets deep quickly.

Lindos

Perhaps the most beautiful town in Rhodes, known for its white houses and significant archaeological sites.

The town’s Acropolis comprises several buildings. The Athena Lindia temple dominated the site in ancient times, reaching its final form around 300 BC.

Visible structures on the Acropolis include the Doric temple of Athena Lindia, the Church of St. John, the Propylaea stairway, the ruins of a Roman temple, and a Hellenic stoa (colonnade).

A steep climb leads to the summit, but the breathtaking views of the sea and town are worth the effort.

Tsampika

Near the resort of Kolympia to the south, this beach is one of the most beautiful on the island.

The small bay’s beach is fine sandy and shallow, making it perfect for children.

The view from the top of the main road to a hilltop with a church and a TV antenna is magnificent.

Looks wonderful from above

Kameiros

Located on the northwestern side, on the hillside, this city was founded around 1100 BC and was one of the three most significant cities of Rhodes. Often referred to as the „Pompeii of Rhodes”.

Above the ancient city stood an acropolis, with recognizable remains including the temple complex dedicated to Athena, a colonnade, and a large water reservoir.

The remains of the agora and the main street lined with columns are visible, along with the foundations of ancient houses.

Many valuable artifacts were discovered during excavations, most of which are displayed in the British Museum in London.

Kritinia Castle

Near the coastal village of Kamiros Skala, these medieval castle ruins offer an experience that may be short but worth it for the stunning panoramic sea views.

Monolithos Castle

Built by the Hospitallers in 1480 under Grand Master Pierre d’ Aubusson, this fortress stands atop a high hill, protecting maritime trade routes.

The steep rocky path to the top is worth the effort for the breathtaking view. Opposite the castle, you can see the small island of Stroggylo.

A small church and a restaurant are also on the route up.

Valley of the Butterflies

Home to the stripeless tree nymph butterflies, attracted to the storax trees’ resin, they gather here in hundreds of thousands during their breeding season from June to late September.

When resting, their dark brown and cream wings blend in, but in flight, they reveal red, black, brown, and white colors.

Seven Springs (Epta Piges)

Located near Kolympia, this pleasant excursion site is fed by seven streams, though in summer, water flows from only a few. The water from the springs is channeled through a 200-meter tunnel to a lake, which the more adventurous can walk through.

Near the parking area of the springs is a restaurant and a small church.

Prasonisi

The southernmost point of the island, where the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas meet. A small isthmus, sometimes flooded, turns it into an island.

Popular with surfers due to the wind. The western side is windier, while the eastern side has calmer waters.

Weather

Rhodes, located on the same latitude as Northern Africa, experiences hot, dry summers typical of the Mediterranean climate. Winters are mild. Spring and autumn are brief.

The majority of the annual rainfall occurs from December to April. The meltémi, a strong north-northwesterly wind, cools the western coasts during most of the summer.

Sea temperatures reach 21°C in June, peaking at an average of 25-26°C in August and remaining around 23°C even in October.

Mykonos is one of the most visited Greek islands, thanks in part to its nightlife. Beyond that, its beautiful beaches also make Mykonos an attractive destination.

Mykonos is part of the Cyclades island group in Greece. Its name is thought to be linked to a local hero, who was a descendant of Apollo.

Although it’s one of the most popular Greek islands, some suggest other islands due to Mykonos’ high prices. If you look at accommodation prices, especially during peak season, they can be quite steep. In terms of value for money, it might not be the best choice.

Mykonos attractions

Mykonos Town

Beside the seaside stands the Paraportiani Church. Completed in the 17th century, this white church complex consists of five interconnected churches.

Particularly noteworthy is the Alefkandra area, also known as Little Venice. Located below the windmills, the buildings here are also along the water’s edge.

For those interested in Mykonos’ culture, the local Archaeological Museum displays pottery, funeral artifacts, and sculptures from prehistoric to Hellenistic times. The Folklore Museum revives local traditions.

Windmills

The iconic Mykonos windmills, located on a hill above Mykonos Town.

There are 16 windmills on the island, seven of which are on this hill. Built by the Venetians in the 16th century for milling flour, they are no longer operational but have been preserved for posterity.

Panagia Tourliani Monastery

Located in the only settlement on Mykonos not by the sea.

Ano Mera hosts the restored 16th-century Panagia Tourliani Monastery, home to sacred icons and paintings within its whitewashed walls. The complex is also known for its impressive bell tower and marble fountain.

Armenistis Lighthouse

Situated on the northwest coast of the island atop a hill, the lighthouse offers stunning views of the sea, sunsets, and neighboring islands.

Mykonos beaches

Paradise Beach

One of the most famous beaches on the southern side, where the elegant Tropicana Hotel is also located.

Developed in the 1960s, it has grown increasingly popular due to its fine sand and consistently good atmosphere. Ideal for those who love both partying and beautiful beaches!

Paraga Beach

Just a few hundred meters away from Paradise Beach, this beach can also get crowded during the peak season.

The sandy shore is lined with several taverns, and a small windmill adds to the beach’s charm.

Megali Ammos

Located in the southern part of Mykonos Town, this beach features a sandy-pebbly shoreline.

Be prepared for often windy conditions. The beach and its vicinity are populated with numerous hotels and taverns.

Korfos

Situated about 8 km south of Mykonos Town, in a deeply indented bay.

As it’s also a windy area, it’s a great spot for kitesurfers. The beach is sandy, and the view is quite beautiful.

Ornos

The beach in the southern part of the village is one of the most popular in the immediate area.

Its sandy-pebbly shore sits in a bay, with gradually deepening waters, making it perfect for families with small children.

A large, lively local beach offering water sports, sunbathing, and numerous beach bars and restaurants.

Kalafati Beach

Located in the southeast, this beach is a favorite spot for water sports enthusiasts.

The sandy-pebbly beach is somewhat removed from the more popular spots, often resulting in less crowded conditions.

Fokos Beach

Accessible only by car, this quiet beach is located in the northeastern part of the island.

The sandy shore is situated in a bay and often features large waves.

Ftelias

Just 7 km from Mykonos Town, this beach stretches across about 300 meters in a large bay.

A favored beach, it’s also popular for water sports due to the frequently windy conditions.

Agios Sostis Beach

Corfu, in the north of the Ionian Sea, is also very popular with Hungarians. It is worth not only concentrating on passive relaxation, but also to visit this wonderful Greek island, as its natural beauty is also great.

It is one of the Ionian Islands and the second largest of the group. Together with its smaller islands, Corfu practically forms the edge of the north-western border of Greece. Albania is just a few kilometres off its north-eastern coast.

Corfu attractions

Corfu Town

As the departure point for boats and buses and being just a few kilometers from the airport, Corfu Town truly is the island’s hub. Considered one of Greece’s most beautiful cities, its Esplanade is the city’s most beautiful square with cafes and restaurants.

The Old Fortress, separated from the city by a canal, requires an entry fee but is worth visiting for its magnificence.

The city’s two notable protective bastions include the New Fortress, which offers a beautiful view of Corfu Town, the Old Fortress, and the port.

Considered one of the most beautiful Greek cities

Kanoni

Kanoni, a peninsula south of Corfu Town, is a popular tourist spot. The views heading south from the cafes on the hillside are remarkable.

Vlaherna Monastery is a small white monastery at the tip of the peninsula and is one of the symbols of the island.

From here you can walk across a concrete causeway to the mainland opposite. The attraction is that planes land and take off over the embankment at very low altitude, making for great pictures.

Achilleon – Sissi’s Castle

Located near Gastouri village, about 15 km from the capital, this unique-style building was commissioned by Empress Elisabeth of Austria (known as Sissi) in 1890.

Named Achilleon after her favorite ancient Greek hero, the castle has a beautiful park and a painted portrait of Queen Elisabeth inside.

Franz Joseph had the castle built for Queen Sissi

Kavos

The southernmost town, Kavos, is known for its vibrant nightlife and is perfect for young people. Those seeking a peaceful holiday should avoid this area.

Roda

A pleasant resort in the north with a beautiful sandy beach, Roda is ideal for those who prefer quiet relaxation.

Sidari

A more subdued party center on the northwestern part of the island, Sidari is suitable for both young and older visitors. The Canal d’Amour Beach is a romantic spot where couples can swim together and, according to legend, stay together forever.

The Sidari Water Park offers smaller water slides and various games for children. More information is available on their website.

Kassiopi

A quaint fishing village in the northeast, Kassiopi is overlooked by a castle with stunning views.

This quiet and atmospheric village is home to Kanoni Beach, which, with its white pebbly shore and views of the Albanian coast, offers an unmatched scenic beauty.

Paleokastritsa

One of the island’s most beautiful beaches is here, with stunning coastlines formed by two peninsulas and five bays.

From Theotokos Monastery, perched above the bay, you can enjoy breathtaking views. The monastery complex is located in the center of Paleokastritsa, atop a hill accessible by a paved road. An Aquarium is also located here, with information available online.

Angelokastro, or the Castle of Angels, is not far from the town. Surrounded by the sea on three sides, it can only be accessed via a narrow land bridge and a steep, winding path. The highest point is the Citadel, and a circular tower protects the northern main gate.

One of Corfu’s most beautiful beaches is here

Benitses

Originally a small fishing village, it has now transformed into a typical holiday village. The Kerkyra-Lefkimi main road runs through it along the coast.

It used to be very lively, but it has become more peaceful now.

Pelekas Beach

With its stunning beach, it’s easily accessible by bus from Corfu Town. The Emperor’s Throne lookout point, offering a 360° panoramic view, is located to the north of Pelekas.

Moraitika and Messonghi

These two towns have merged over the years, separated only by a narrow river and a roundabout.

Shops and entertainment venues are primarily found in Moraitika, which is also where most of the nightlife happens. In addition to small taverns and bars, there are numerous entertainment options along the beach.

Halikounas Beach

This nearly 3 km long beach separates the sea from Korission Lake, offering beautiful views of the lake too. At its northern tip, the distance between the sea and the lake is just 50 meters.

Agios Georgios

Located in the south-southwest, this place is ideal for those seeking tranquility and relaxation, as well as for families with children.

The western part includes Issos Beach, known for its sandy, vegetation-free coastline.

Ágios Ionnis Aqualand

Open from mid-May to mid-October. You can reach it from Corfu Town using the number 8 bus.

Find entrance fees and all information on the official website.

Pantokrator Mountain

The 906-meter-high Pantokrator peak, visible from all minor elevations on the island, features a unique pair of buildings: a monastery and a TV tower.

Accessible by car to the summit via a paved road, it offers excellent views.

Weather

Due to its Mediterranean location, temperatures are pleasant throughout the year, even in winter, staying above 10°C. The hottest period is during July and August, the peak season in Corfu.

Most rainfall occurs between October and February, with little precipitation from May to September. Annual weather data can be found here.

What is Kefalonia famous for? Of course, for Myrtos Beach! However, Kefalonia has much more to offer in terms of attractions – the beaches aren’t the only main attractions! Check out what wonderful places you can find on this Greek island!

The largest of the Ionian Islands is located in western Greece. The island is characterized by high mountain ranges, spacious bays, and lush green vegetation.

More and more people from our country are setting out to discover this island, with tourism growing in Kefalonia alongside Corfu and Zakynthos.

Kefalonia attractions

Argostoli

Most of the Venetian-style buildings in the island’s capital were unfortunately destroyed in the 1953 earthquake, but it’s still worth visiting.

During walks in the downtown area, especially around the port, you’ll find numerous bars and tavernas. Its main pedestrian street is Lithostroto, the „stone road”.

The 700-meter-long De Bosset Bridge connects Argostoli with the Drapano area across the bay. The view is already good from the bridge, but the panorama is even more beautiful from the hillside on the other side.

Argostoli Capital of Kefalonia

Lassi

The town adjacent to Argostoli has a more vibrant life – those looking for entertainment should visit here.

Saint George Castle

Located 8 kilometers from the capital Argostoli, near the village of Peratata, where the road leads up to it.

The foundations of the castle were built by the Byzantines in the 12th century, but it only reached its final form four centuries later after several reconstructions. It stands on top of a high, cone-shaped hill, providing protection to the surrounding area from 320 meters high. The thick walls remained impenetrable for a long time.

It offers fantastic views and entry is free!

Drogarati Cave

The island’s only visitable stalactite cave is located 45 meters below the surface.

Many say it’s not more spectacular than Aggtelek Cave, but it’s definitely worth including if you’re in the area.

It has excellent acoustics, and performances are even held in one section, taking advantage of the great sound.

Melissani Cave

This lake cave is located not far from Drogarati Cave. The lake water is salty, mixing fresh water from the mainland with seawater.

During excavations in 1962, oil lamps and plates from the Minoan culture were found, and figures featuring Pan and the nymphs were discovered. That’s why it’s also called the Cave of the Nymphs. Its specific name comes from a particular nymph, Melissanthi.

In the early afternoon, when the sun shines into the cave through the opening above and reflects on the water’s surface, it looks like boats are floating in the air. It’s a magnificent sight!

Assos

This Venetian-style settlement is located in the northern part.

Half an hour’s walk away, on a peninsula, is one of the largest Greek fortifications. The fortress once protected the western coastline.

A steep 2-kilometer footpath leads up to the ruins. The path is stone-paved and continuously rises to the castle ruins at the end. Entry is free. The panorama from the top is extremely spectacular, making it worth the climb.

The beach at the peninsula’s entrance is noteworthy. This wind-protected bay is considered very good, with beautiful views of the fortress from below. The water deepens slowly, and the shore is pebbly.

Assos is also a charming settlement

Fiskardo

This port town is located even further north and survived the 1953 earthquake. Because of this, the old style has been preserved here – it’s worth admiring the buildings and their colors.

Make sure to walk along the seafront promenade lined with houses in various colors! Here you can view boats and yachts from the terraces of numerous restaurants and cafes.

The town’s two lighthouses can be reached by a roughly 1 km walk. From here, there’s a beautiful view of the sea and the opposite island of Ithaca.

Lourdas

A quiet southern settlement of Kefalonia, with a long, fully developed beach nearby.

The island’s highest mountain is nearby, at the foot of which this quiet town lies.

The beach, covered with light-colored pebbles, has water that deepens at a moderate rate and is usually pleasantly warm from early summer.

There are no nightclubs in Lourdas, just a few tavernas and shops – otherwise, it’s just peaceful. This makes it ideal for those seeking a quiet holiday.

Best beaches in Kefalonia

Myrtos Beach

Of course, this is number one among Kefalonia’s attractions! It has been voted the most beautiful Greek beach multiple times. The beach at the foot of two mountains has fantastic panoramic views.

Its special color comes from the limestone making up the cliff face being washed into the sea by rain and waves. That’s why the sea is such a beautiful blue.

The long, wide, white sandy-rocky beach has sunbeds, toilets, changing rooms, and a buffet serving visitors’ needs, yet the landscape still maintains its natural, untouched atmosphere.

Several viewpoints have been built along the main road at the top of the cliff, offering excellent views of the white beach.

Who doesn’t know the iconic beaches of Kefalonia!?

Platia Ammos Beach

Located on the western part of the Paliki peninsula, this beach is similar to Myrtos. The water deepens quickly at the beach at the foot of the mountain, and the shore is pebbly.

As this area is quite undeveloped, there are few people, and it’s quite difficult to access. A steep staircase leads from the parking lot to the beach, which often gets damaged due to minor earth movements. Therefore, caution is needed!

Petani Beach

Many consider this Kefalonia’s most beautiful beach. It has a somewhat Caribbean atmosphere, with crystal-clear water shimmering in all shades of blue.

It’s quite off the main tourist route, so it’s less crowded than Myrtos.

It has a pebbly shore, and you need to be careful as the water deepens quickly. Large waves can often disturb swimming!

Makris Gialos Beach

Located a few kilometers from Argostoli, at the edge of Lassi, this is the area’s most popular beach.

It has wonderful fine sand, gradually deepening water, and clear, transparent water.

It’s very well developed. An excellent choice for both water sports enthusiasts and families.

Gradakia Beach

Located on the shore of Lassi. It’s a very beautiful bathing spot, accessible via high stairs down to the water.

Small sandy beach section with very clear water. It has a gradually deepening shoreline where you can go snorkeling.

Paliostafida Beach

It’s worth visiting this beach, where you can enjoy a sandy, pebbly beach in a small area at the foot of a loess wall.

Emplisi Beach

A few kilometers from Fiskardo, we find this pebbly beach in a bay.

Due to the bay, it’s quite wind-protected, and can get quite crowded during high season. But if you’re in the area, definitely visit!

Skala

This small town in the southeastern tip of the island is known for its beach.

The pebbly beach stretching for several kilometers is well-developed, making relaxation trouble-free. The southern section becomes rocky, where you’ll encounter fewer tourists.

Xi Beach

Also on the Paliki peninsula, this beach lies on its southern part. What makes it popular is the view provided by the red sand and white cliff face. Many compare it to a tennis court color. 🙂

The sand is said to have healing properties, so it’s a common sight to see bathers coating themselves with water-soluble soft clay.

The Acropolis, Athens’ impressive fortress, is not just a simple group of buildings. This cultural heritage is a beautiful artistic and historical treasure that is a must-see when visiting Athens!

The Acropolis is one of the most significant monuments of the ancient Greek world, rising impressively on the heights of ancient Athens. This stunning architectural masterpiece and historical site symbolizes the outstanding culture of ancient Greece and democracy.

It was not only a religious sanctuary but also the pinnacle of ancient Greek art and architecture, decorated with works by famous sculptors and architects.

The Acropolis is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Millions of visitors arrive here every year to admire the legacy of ancient Greek art and culture.

I was here on a Saturday in the autumn of 2023. There was a huge crowd everywhere! Expect a queue at the entrance. Afterwards you’d think everything was ok, but no! There will be another queue before the road to the top, then a trudge up the narrow road. And on the way down, there’s also a long queue, because in some places you can only go slowly in single file. It took me about 40 minutes to get out of the area.
Preferably go in the early morning, as queuing in the heat can be very stressful for many!

You can read a photo report of my trip to Athens here!

History of the Acropolis

Construction work began in the 5th century BC to transform the Acropolis into a citadel after the Persians were defeated by the Athenians led by Pericles in 452 BC. In their victorious mood, the Greeks began massive construction projects. The costs were covered by tribute from the Delian League, which sparked fierce protests in the assembly. The assembly chose Pericles as the leader of the planned construction, manager and supervisor of all work, while Pheidias became the director of artistic execution — Pericles placed the Acropolis at the center of the city’s reconstruction, but only the Propylaea and the Parthenon were completed during his lifetime. The latter’s construction began between 447 and 438 BC.

It remained relatively intact until the end of the 18th century, despite the fact that from the 4th century the Parthenon was used as a Christian church, and from 1458 the Turks used it as a mosque. In 1687, Venice besieged the Turks, and on September 26, General Francesco Morosini’s cannonball hit the powder magazine placed in the Parthenon, causing the stored gunpowder to explode. Three hundred women and children died in the explosion. The explosion blew apart the long sides of the Parthenon, and after the subsequent two-day fire, the building remained in the skeletal state visible today.

At the beginning of the 19th century, Lord Elgin, the British ambassador, with Turkish permission, removed several statues and reliefs from the building and transported them to London, where they can still be seen in the British Museum today. The restoration of the Acropolis began in the 19th century after Greece’s liberation.

Major excavations took place between 1876-1885 commissioned by the Greek Archaeological Society, but the restoration and examination of the buildings has not been completed to this day.

Buildings of the Acropolis

The complex consists of more than 20 parts, some of which are now only remains.

Parthenon

The Parthenon is the most famous and prominent building on the Acropolis. This Doric-style temple was built in the 5th century BC in honor of goddess Athena. In 1209 it was converted into a Christian church, and in the 15th century into a mosque. Later it was used as a powder magazine.

The temple is Doric in style from the outside, made of yellowish, veined Pentelic marble. The precision of classical era architecture can be observed in every detail of its design. The building’s 70-meter-long and 31-meter-wide foundation is not perfectly square, but slightly curved toward the corners, the columns lean inward, while the pediment slightly leans outward. The temple has eight Doric columns on its shorter sides and seventeen on its longer sides.

Erechtheion

The Erechtheion is another important temple of the Acropolis, built in the 5th century. The building uses a mixture of Doric and Ionic columns and was dedicated to Athena and Poseidon.

This extremely graceful Attic Ionic style building was constructed between 421 and 406 BC, though it was never completed due to Athens’ defeat by Sparta. Its designer is unknown. It was probably the site of legendary King Erechtheus’s tomb, after whom the building was named.

The Erechtheion consists of several parts. Its center is a temple that housed the wooden statue of the goddess. Two porches are attached to this central building on both sides. The most famous of these is the southern porch, whose columns are in the form of draped maidens.

Propylaea

The Propylaea is the entrance hall at the main entrance of the Acropolis. It was built between 437 and 432 BC based on plans by Mnesicles.

Its style, conforming to the Parthenon, shows the form of a Doric temple from the outside with its column row crowned by a tympanum. On the western facade, there are two protruding wings on either side of the entrance, making the Propylaea look more like a palace than a gate. Its representative nature is evidenced by the fact that it was built from valuable building materials, white Pentelic and bluish-black Eleusinian marble.

Nike Apteros

Located at the corner of the Acropolis. This building symbolizes victory and triumph. It served as a sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Nike and once housed the statue of the goddess. Today, a copy of the original statue stands in its place.

Theater of Dionysus

It could accommodate about 17,000 spectators. The theater was built into the hillside, and thanks to its unique acoustics, sounds carried well throughout the auditorium.

The Theater of Dionysus was a prominent venue for ancient Greek drama performances, where works by famous playwrights such as Sophocles and Euripides were presented. It has been renovated and modified several times over the centuries.

Odeon of Herodes Atticus

The building was constructed by a wealthy Greek-Roman citizen and patron named Herodes Atticus in 161 AD in honor of his wife at the time, Regilla.

The theater is a semicircular amphitheater that can accommodate about 5,000 spectators. The theater buildings were partly made of marble, and the Doric columns on its side and the high walls were built in beautiful Roman style.

It is famous for its excellent acoustics. It is still regularly used as a venue for cultural events, concerts, and performances, especially during the summer months.

Visiting the Acropolis

It’s essential to buy tickets online, as it’s almost impossible to do so on site. Do this on the official website!

You need to select a one-hour time slot within the day. Entry is possible 15 minutes before and after the start and end times. So, for example, if we bought a ticket for the 10:00-11:00 time slot, we can enter between 9:45 and 11:15!

In extreme weather conditions, extraordinary closures may be ordered, which has already happened during summer heat waves! It’s advisable not to plan Athens trips during the summer months.

The Acropolis is the most visited site in Athens, so it’s not surprising that large crowds can be expected during certain periods. Generally, the highest visitor numbers are experienced during the following periods:

Summer season (June-August): this is when most people visit, as many tourists travel during this period. During this time, longer queues and crowding may occur.

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-October): these periods are attractive to visitors due to the milder weather. Spring and autumn can be cooler than summer, and fewer tourists are at the Acropolis, which can make for a more pleasant experience for visitors.

Around Easter: during this time, popular celebrations and events take place around Athens and the Acropolis. Many local and foreign visitors come to the Acropolis during this time to participate in the celebrations and other cultural events.

Weekends and holidays: Athenians also frequently visit the Acropolis on weekends and holidays. Visitor numbers may increase during these times, especially around holidays such as the Athens Festival, named after the city of Athens.

Many say that the Greek coastline is one of the most beautiful in the world. Fortunately, there’s plenty of it! Here are 13 Greek beaches from 13 islands!

13 most beautiful Greek beaches

Elafonissi (Crete)

Elafonissi beach is a beautiful lagoon in western Crete, where other wonderful beaches can also be found. However, this one stands out among them all! It’s no wonder it has been named Europe’s most beautiful beach!

Colors play a key role here too. Its shore is pinkish, thanks to coral remnants mixed with white sand. Combined with the crystal-clear water, it offers a fantastic sight.

The beach is well-developed, so always be prepared for crowds. If you want a quieter spot, walk across the lagoon to enjoy relaxation on an island.

Elafonissi beach is particularly recommended for families with children, as the water is about one meter deep at its deepest point.

Myrtos (Kefalonia)

When we talk about Kefalonia, this is likely the first beach that comes to mind. No wonder, as it has been chosen as Greece’s most beautiful beach multiple times.

The unique color of the water is due to the limestone from the mountain behind being washed into the sea by the waves. The snow-white sandy-pebbly beach can also be admired from above, as several viewpoints have been built on the main road leading to it.

These factors result in Myrtos being wonderful primarily due to its variety of colors. The turquoise water, white shore, and grayish-black mountain create an unparalleled color combination.

Kefalonia attractions, beaches

Navagio Bay (Zakynthos)

This isolated bay is perhaps the most famous Greek beach. Many boats dock in the semicircular bay, as people want to see the white sandy beach with the high cliff behind it.

The immense interest and popularity are evidenced by the fact that Navagio is one of the most photographed beaches.

Another attraction is the shipwreck in the bay. Legend has it that this was a smuggler’s ship that sank in a storm in the 1980s. Of course, nothing proves this story, but it has become an integral part of Navagio Bay’s existence.

Many prefer to drive to the area above the cliffs, which offers a fantastic view of one of the most beautiful Greek beaches.

2023 update: authorities do not allow boats to dock due to rock falls. So for now, the bay can only be admired from boats!

Zakynthos attractions, beaches

Porto Katsiki (Lefkada)

Lefkada island might be a bit overshadowed by the most famous ones, even though it’s accessible by car from our country.

Porto Katsiki beach, located in the northwestern part of the island, is somewhat similar to Myrtos in Kefalonia. The turquoise water, pebbly shore, and the mountainside rising behind it also offer a wonderful panorama for tourists.

Tsampika (Rhodes)

The environment of this beach is also impressive. There’s a monastery at the top of the mountain peak, which is associated with a local tradition: those who walk up barefoot will be successful in conceiving children. Give it a try!

From above, you can clearly see Tsampika, which lies at the foot of the mountain and is one of the best, some say the best, beach on the island. Its shore is sandy and gradually deepening, making it ideal for families with small children.

Rhodes attractions, beaches

Lalaria (Skiathos)

Skiathos island has many great beaches, but Lalaria is worth highlighting because it can only be accessed by boat. The beach’s snow-white, pebbly shore attracts thousands of tourists every year.

The blue water, white shore, and gray cliff behind offer a fantastic sight even as you approach the beach.

Skiathos attractions, beaches

Simos Beach (Elafonisos)

Elafonisos is a small island between the Peloponnese and Kythira island. Its area is only 18 square kilometers.

Simos Beach has fine sand, crystal clear water, and since the bay is shallow, it’s an excellent bathing spot for children. It’s not a developed beach, you can’t drive directly to the shore, so you can almost only hear the waves of the sea.

Sarakiniko Beach (Milos)

Sarakiniko is exceptionally not famous for its wonderful sandy beach, but for its „moonlike” landscape. The grayish-white rocks have been shaped into unique forms by wind and waves.

Everyone can find the right part of the shore: there are sandy and rocky areas, as well as shallow and quickly deepening water sections.

Ios Papa Beach (Ios)

I don’t know if anyone has heard of Ios island. It’s located roughly halfway between Athens and Crete. It’s a perfect location for both party-goers and those seeking quiet relaxation.

One of its most beautiful beaches is Ios Papa Beach. It’s located in a small bay, quite hidden, and this seclusion makes it unique. The crystal clear water and the many palm trees around the beach create a wonderful environment.

As the water deepens quite quickly from the shore, it’s not ideal for families with small children.

Kolona Beach (Kythnos)

Kythnos is part of the Cyclades island group, not far from the Greek mainland.

Kolona Beach is a narrow sandy isthmus that separates two sea bays. It offers a special experience as it’s surrounded by water on both sides, creating a wonderful sight.

The island is not crowded even in summer, and the beach is not easily accessible, making the sandy shore perfect for quiet relaxation.

Kamares Beach (Sifnos)

The beach of the capital of this island, located about halfway between the mainland and Santorini, lies in a wonderful environment.

What makes it one of the most beautiful Greek beaches is the combined view of the mountains surrounding the bay and the crystal clear water. The white houses of the small town, Kamares, make the beach even more beautiful.

The shore is fine golden sand that deepens slowly, making it particularly attractive for families and children.

Voutoumi Beach (Antipaxos)

Antipaxos is a small island in the Ionian Sea, south of Corfu. It’s most easily accessible by boat from Paxos.

The water at Voutoumi Beach is extremely clean and transparent, ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The water color ranges from light blue to turquoise, offering a special sight.

The shore is covered with fine white sand and pebbles, with various rock formations in the background. As its water is shallow, it’s ideal for children too.

Saliara Beach (Thassos)

Thassos is also called the greenest island, where sea waves have created a wonderful beach with rounded marbles.

Also known as Marble Beach, Saliara or Marble strand is one of the island’s attractions. The shore covered with white marble stones is tucked away in two bays, which can be reached by boat or car.

Have you seen the 2008 film „Mamma Mia!”? If so, then you might already have an idea of how beautiful the island of Skiathos is, as the film was shot here and on the neighboring island of Skopelos. Its wonderful landscapes, favorable climate, and more than 60 beaches make the island deservedly popular.

Located in the Aegean Sea between Athens and Thessaloniki, Skiathos is part of the Sporades island group. It covers an area of 48 km² and has just over 5000 inhabitants.

The island doesn’t boast many attractions, focusing primarily on beach relaxation and leisure. However, for those interested in hiking, there are opportunities in the pine-covered mountains.

The island has an airport, known for the low-flying planes that pass just a few meters above the road at the end of the runway.

You can reach the island by ferry from the city of Volos, with a journey time of 105 minutes. There are only 1-2 ferry services daily to the island and the neighboring Skopelos.

Skiathos attractions

Skiathos Town

The capital of the island, located near the airport. Most tourists stay here as it is a good starting point for exploring the beaches.

Built on two hills, it offers a great view of the bay. The harbor and the bay area are lined with numerous taverns and bars. The town is characterized by red-roofed, white houses.

It’s worth taking a walk to the small peninsula on the east side of the bay, where you can see the remains of a small fort. From the promenade, there’s a splendid view of the town.

Skiathos’ distinctive white houses with red roofs

Koukounaries

A resort town in the southwest, with many accommodations. A great choice for those seeking an authentic holiday experience without missing out on beach time. Koukounaries Beach is one of the island’s most beautiful beaches.

Kastro

Located at the northern tip of the island, Kastro is accessible only by foot or boat. It used to be the capital.

The settlement, built on rocky terrain, was eventually abandoned, possibly due to the harsh environmental conditions. Several medieval ruins can be found on the rocks. The view is spectacular, making a hiking trip well worth it!

View of the sea

Skiathos beaches

As mentioned, there are more than 60 beaches on this small island, so I will only mention the ones considered the most beautiful.

Koukounaries Beach

Already mentioned above, it is located in the settlement of the same name. Skiathos’ most famous beach, it has often been ranked as Greece’s most beautiful beach.

Its pleasant, fine sandy shore, crystal clear waters, and surrounding hillsides make this beach famous. However, be aware that the sea deepens quickly, so be cautious.

Best-known beach in Skiathos

Megali Ammos Beach

Located on the western side of Skiathos town, this is the capital’s most famous beach. Naturally, it’s a well-developed and easily accessible beach.

Lalaria Beach

Near Kastro and only accessible by boat. Thus, it’s an untouched, stunning seaside area with large white rocks rising in front of azure waters.

Lalaria is only accessible by boat

Tsougrias Beach

Located south of Skiathos on the island of the same name, it’s considered one of the best excursions. Motorboats depart from Nostos Beach to this destination, offering a fine sandy beach and crystal clear waters.

Banana Beach

Near Koukounaries, in a bay, it’s recommended for families as the water is quite shallow. To the north is its „little sibling,” which operates as a nudist beach.

Mandraki Beach

North of Koukounaries, this exotic beach can be reached by car through a pine forest on a sandy road up to a certain point, after which a short walk is required.

Exotic coastline

Agia Paraskevi Beach

Located in the southern town of Platanias, it has a fine golden sandy beach. The beach is well-developed, and a wide variety of water sports are available.

Xanemos

Known for airplanes flying just meters above sunbathers, similar to Saint Maarten. Unlike most beaches, it has a pebbly-sandy composition.

Get a close-up view of aircraft

Skopelos

Located east of Skiathos, several scenes from the „Mamma Mia!” movie were filmed here.

The island is dotted with signs marking „Mamma Mia!” filming locations, and many local travel agencies offer tours and boat trips to these sites.

Known as the „green and blue island”, it indicates the beauty of its vegetation and seashores. Most beaches are pebbly, with water often deepening quickly, but they are crystal clear and most well-developed beaches are sheltered.

You can take a boat from Skiathos to reach the main town of Skopelos.
