What time zone is Shanghai in?

Shanghai operates on China Standard Time (CST, UTC+8). China does not observe daylight saving time, so the time in Shanghai remains consistent throughout the year.

When is the best time to visit Shanghai?

The spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) periods are generally considered the most ideal for visiting Shanghai. The weather is pleasant, temperatures are moderate, and the rainy season does not make travelling uncomfortable.

Spring (March–May) is one of the best times to visit Shanghai. Temperatures generally range between 10–22°C, and the cherry blossoms give the city a special atmosphere. However, some rain should be expected.

Summer (June–August) in Shanghai is hot and humid, with temperatures regularly exceeding 35°C. This period is also riskier in terms of typhoons, and is therefore less recommended for visiting.

Autumn (September–November) is also an excellent period, with milder temperatures and less rainfall. Daytime temperatures are generally between 15–25°C, and the sky is clearer.

Winter (December–February) in Shanghai is cool and grey, with temperatures around 0–10°C. Although snow is rare, the damp and foggy weather makes this not the ideal time to visit.

How many days should you spend in Shanghai?

At least 3–4 days are generally recommended to explore Shanghai. The city is vast and incredibly diverse, so even a week would not get boring.

In 3 days, you can generally fit in the most important sights: the Bund, Nanjing Road, Yu Garden, and the Pudong district.

With a 4–5 day stay, you can explore the city at a more leisurely pace, including museum visits, a boat trip on the Huangpu River, or a visit to Disneyland.

What is the official currency in Shanghai?

China’s official currency is the Chinese yuan (CNY), also known as renminbi (RMB). In Shanghai, all everyday transactions are conducted exclusively in Chinese yuan.

Almost everywhere, only Chinese payment apps (WeChat Pay, Alipay) are accepted. It is worth researching in advance and, if possible, withdrawing cash from ATMs at the airport or banks. However, many hotels and larger restaurants also accept Visa and Mastercard.

Do people speak English in Shanghai?

Shanghai is one of the most English-friendly cities in China, especially in tourist areas, hotels, the airport, and larger restaurants. However, English proficiency is far from universal in everyday life.

In districts frequented by tourists – such as the Bund, Xintiandi, or the French Concession – there are generally staff who can communicate in English. English signs and bilingual announcements at metro stations also help with navigation.

In smaller restaurants, markets, and at street vendors, however, it is almost certain that no one will speak English. In such cases, a translation app – such as Google Translate or DeepL – comes in handy, and it is worth downloading it in advance and making it available in offline mode.

What type of plug is used in Shanghai?

China primarily uses the following socket types: Type A (two flat pins), Type I (angled pins), and Type C (two round pins). European devices will most often require a travel adapter.

The mains voltage in China is 220 Volts, 50 Hz. Therefore, most European electronic devices can be used without a voltage converter — an adapter is only needed because of the plug shape.

How does internet and SIM card usage work in Shanghai?

The internet in China is heavily restricted: many well-known sites and apps – including Google, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and YouTube – are not accessible due to the ‘Great Firewall’. It is worth installing and setting up a VPN in advance, while still in Hungary.

Local SIM cards and eSIMs are available in Shanghai, which can be used for mobile data. Additionally, tourist SIM cards offering unlimited data are increasingly available.

Is tipping customary in Shanghai?

In China – and thus in Shanghai – tipping is not a widespread custom. In most restaurants and service providers, tips are neither expected nor accepted.

In luxury hotels and restaurants specifically catering to foreign tourists, a small tip may be given, but it is not obligatory. At street food vendors and local restaurants, leaving a tip would be completely unusual.

Travel and transportation

How do I get from the airport to the centre of Shanghai?

Shanghai has two international airports: Pudong International Airport (PVG), located approximately 40–50 km east of the city centre, and Hongqiao Airport (SHA), which is closer to the downtown area.

From Pudong Airport, the fastest option is the Maglev (magnetic levitation train), which reaches Longyang Road metro station in just 7–8 minutes, where you can transfer to the metro. A direct metro line (Line 2) is also available, though this takes considerably longer (approx. 1 hour).

From Hongqiao Airport, you can easily and quickly reach the city centre by metro (Lines 2 and 10) in approximately 30–40 minutes.

Taxis are also available at both airports, and Didi, the Chinese equivalent of Uber, can be used via a smartphone app.

What is the most convenient way to get around Shanghai?

Shanghai’s public transport network is one of the best and most modern in the world. The metro covers most tourist destinations and is fast, cheap, and easy to use.

The metro network consists of 20 lines and reaches virtually every corner of the city. English signs and maps at stations help with navigation. Tickets can be purchased at ticket vending machines.

Taxis are also a popular mode of transport, and the fares are relatively affordable. The Didi app (China’s Uber) is particularly convenient, as the destination can be entered in both Chinese and English.

Accommodation and safety

Is Shanghai a safe city?

Shanghai is one of China’s safest cities, and tourists generally report pleasant, safe experiences. Due to the strong public security presence and state surveillance, the crime rate is low.

Pickpocketing and minor thefts may occur in crowded places, markets, or on public transport, so it is worth keeping an eye on your valuables. At night, the city centre is also relatively safe, but as in any large city, you should be vigilant.

Which neighbourhood is best to stay in Shanghai?

The most popular areas for tourists to stay in Shanghai are the Bund area, the Old French Concession, Xintiandi, Jing’an, and the Pudong district. These are well located, with numerous restaurants and attractions accessible on foot.

The Bund area is located near Shanghai’s most famous tourist spot – from here, the riverfront, Nanjing pedestrian street, and historic buildings are accessible on foot.

The French Concession, with its charming tree-lined streets, bistros, and boutiques, is ideal for those seeking a pleasant, quieter neighbourhood in the city centre.

Xintiandi is Shanghai’s fashionable and elegant district, where excellent restaurants, bars, and shopping opportunities are found within preserved old buildings.

Jing’an is a well-connected, vibrant neighbourhood with a temple, shopping centres, and a wide range of accommodation options.

Pudong is the heart of modern Shanghai, with its skyscrapers, the Oriental Pearl Tower, and the Lujiazui financial district. It is primarily recommended for business travellers, but tourists also frequently choose it for its spectacular panorama.

Are mandatory vaccinations required for travelling to Shanghai?

Travelling to Shanghai generally does not require any mandatory vaccinations for most travellers. However, some recommended vaccinations may be considered, especially for longer stays in China.

Is tap water safe to drink in Shanghai?

Drinking tap water in Shanghai is not recommended. Although the water supply is officially treated, most residents and tourists use bottled water due to the risk of contamination from old pipe networks.

Bottled water is easily available in supermarkets and small shops, generally very cheaply. Hotels usually provide mineral water in rooms free of charge, and hot water dispensers are also widely available.

Most tourists use tap water for brushing their teeth, but those with a sensitive stomach should also use bottled water for this purpose.

What are the must-see sights in Shanghai?

Shanghai’s most well-known sights include the Bund, the skyscrapers of the Pudong district, Yu Garden, the Old French Concession, and the Xintiandi district. Together, these places create Shanghai’s unique character.

The Bund is Shanghai’s symbol: the colonial-era buildings lining the Huangpu River form an impressive panorama, facing the ultramodern skyscrapers of the Pudong district. It is particularly stunning at sunset and when lit up at night.

The Pudong district showcases Shanghai’s modern face: the Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Tower, and Jin Mao Tower are iconic skyscrapers reaching into the sky. From the observation deck of Shanghai Tower, a breathtaking panorama of the city unfolds.

What are the most popular foods and drinks in Shanghai?

Shanghai’s cuisine is rich and varied: the most well-known local specialities are xiaolongbao (steamed filled dumplings), shengjianbao (pan-fried dumplings), and hairy crab. Among drinks, Chinese tea and local beer brands are the most popular.

Xiaolongbao is Shanghai’s most famous culinary speciality: small, thin-skinned dumplings that conceal hot broth and filling. The best xiaolongbao can be tasted at Din Tai Fung or Jia Jia Tang Bao restaurants.

Shengjianbao is similar to xiaolongbao, but the bottom is fried crispy in a pan. An excellent breakfast or snack from street vendors.

Hairy crab is an autumn seasonal delicacy that is almost adored in Shanghai – it is offered throughout the September–November season from Yangcheng Lake.

Chinese tea culture is also strong in Shanghai: jasmine tea, pu-erh tea, and green tea can be tasted in teahouses. Street boba tea (tapioca milk tea) is also extremely popular.

What are the important holidays and festivals in Shanghai?

Numerous important holidays and festivals are held in Shanghai throughout the year. Among the most memorable are Chinese New Year, the Mid-Autumn Festival, and the Dragon Boat Festival.

Chinese New Year (Chūnjié) is the most important Chinese holiday, held in late January or early February. Fireworks, lanterns, and parades fill the city. The most spectacular celebrations take place along the Bund and around Yu Garden. It is important to note that many shops and restaurants close during the festive period.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is held in September or October. Traditional mooncakes are tasted, and people stroll through the city in the light of the full moon. It is celebrated in Shanghai with beautiful decorations and festive markets.

The Dragon Boat Festival takes place in June and is celebrated with dragon boat races and the eating of traditional zongzi (rice balls wrapped in bamboo leaves).

The Shanghai International Film Festival is generally held in June and is one of Asia’s most significant film festivals.

Shanghai public transport – airports, ticket types, prices

Travel by train

When booking my flight tickets, I had already decided to travel from Beijing by high-speed train. It covers the approximately 1,300 km distance in 4.5 hours, traveling at a constant speed of 350 km/h. It’s impressive, but you absolutely cannot feel this speed on the train.

I wrote about ticket purchasing and railway station procedures in detail in part 1 (read more useful advice)!

Sunday

The train arrived at Hongqiao Railway Station, from where I took Metro Line 2 to the city center to reach my accommodation. The hotel was next to the main railway station, and I could easily get everywhere by metro.

On this day, my program included the pedestrian street Nanjing Road and the skyscraper area across the Huangpu River. I left the hotel around 5:30 PM and walked from People’s Square along Nanjing Road to the riverbank.

Since the early May holiday was in full swing, there were crowds everywhere. But this had a good side: the skyscrapers had special illumination, and the „show” was much more impressive than on weekdays. It’s worth walking along the entire length of the riverfront. I managed to take excellent photos, videos, and timelapses from several spots.

Monday

Monday turned out to be only a „half” day, as it rained quite heavily until early afternoon. Rain is common here due to the ocean, but fortunately, precipitation didn’t hinder me again during my trip.

I left the hotel around 3 PM for the Jade Buddha Temple. This is a temple with a very pleasant atmosphere, where I happened to witness a ceremony. Afterward, I could view the main sanctuary.

I then stopped at a small eatery. I usually look for places that don’t cater to tourists but are frequented by locals. I found this place in a side street, and they were quite surprised to see a tourist there. 🙂

After my beef noodle soup, I visited the nearby Huaihai Road, which is a somewhat European-style district. Its outstanding building is the Wukang Mansion, which is a smaller version of the Flatiron Building (which can be seen in New York). Several other buildings also give this area a European feel.

I waited for dusk in the Qibao district on the outskirts of Shanghai, which is far from being a touristy area (I only met two non-Chinese families in total). Yet most visitors would surely love this area of a few streets. It’s especially beautiful when they start illuminating it as darkness falls. There are many shops and eateries, though it’s true you can explore it quickly. But it was definitely worth traveling an hour each way for this sight!

I took the metro back to the city center, where I walked through the elegant Xintiandi area. This is a shopping street with many stores and bars. It’s worth coming here in the evening.

The last attraction of the day was the skyscraper area. Get off Metro Line 2 at Lujiazui station, and you’ll emerge right next to the iconic Oriental Pearl Tower. You can take great pictures here, but the Shanghai Tower and other skyscrapers are also impressive…

On this day, I made a trip to Hangzhou, a city one hour away by train, which is considered one of China’s most beautiful cities. I’ll write about this in detail in the next part!

Wednesday

My last full day in China fortunately had perfect weather, and I visited the remaining sights. And to crown it all, I had an evening appointment at the Shanghai Tower.

First, I took a walk in People’s Park and had a coffee in the pleasant environment. From there, I went to the Shanghai Museum, where I had an entry slot for 10:15-11:00 (entry is free, but you need to register in advance via WeChat or in person). I also passed by the modern theater, which is truly beautiful.

The Shanghai Museum is a multi-level, also modern building, but it was a big disappointment. Only a few halls were open, and although they had good exhibitions, I finished seeing everything in about 30 minutes. They could have arranged it so that only one or two halls were closed at a time, but anyway…

From the museum, I took the metro to the Longhua Pagoda, where entry is free. This is also a significant temple in the city, but fewer tourists visit. It’s no coincidence that the majority were locals, holding incense sticks asking for blessings. It was interesting to see people continuously walking around the huge pagoda and praying.

From there, I went to the Tianzifang district, which is an area of alleys, mainly intended for tourists. It’s worth a walk, but I didn’t spend much time here.

Next came the Yuyuan district with its famous garden. There are many tourists here, thanks not only to the garden but also to the architecture of the surrounding streets. We can see wonderful buildings, especially the small inner streets are very atmospheric. Next to it is the Yuyuan Garden, which is also worth visiting. It was one of the most famous gardens of the Ming Dynasty, where emperors also rested. The entrance fee is 40 yuan, and it covers quite a large area.

The Bund riverfront area is about a 5-minute walk away, so I took one last look at the skyscrapers on the opposite bank.

I took the metro to the other side and next was the city’s highest observation deck, the Shanghai Tower. I bought tickets on trip.com ($25), but you can also buy them on-site depending on availability. Although you can buy tickets for a two-hour time slot (I chose the 18:30-20:20 slot), they will let you up anytime if it’s not full. I was already in the elevator at 6 PM, half an hour early, so I managed to reach the 118th floor while it was still light.

Fortunately, the humidity wasn’t high, so I was greeted with a particularly good view. And as it began to get dark, the whole city lit up:

Thursday

The plane to Shenzhen was departing at 1:30 PM, so I had plenty of time for breakfast. I needed to go to Pudong Airport, which is directly accessible via Metro Line 2. However, at Longyang Road, you can transfer to the Maglev magnetic train. Of course, that’s what I traveled with!

Getting off the metro, the Maglev station is clearly signposted (a few minutes’ walk), where I bought a ticket for 50 yuan. The magnetic train departed a few minutes later. Unfortunately, it now runs at „only” 300 km/h, although it was tested to go faster. Well, anyway, at least I tried this too. 🙂

Transportation between airports and city

Shanghai has two major international airports: Pudong International Airport (PVG) and Hongqiao International Airport (SHA).

Pudong International Airport

Shanghai’s main international airport, located about 30 km from downtown. It has two terminals (T1, T2) that are connected by walkways.

Maglev

The fastest mode of transportation, reaching Longyang Road metro station in just 7 minutes, where you can transfer to metro lines 2, 7, 16, and 18. It operates from morning until late evening in both directions.

The Maglev is the world’s fastest commercial train, capable of traveling at speeds of 300 km/h. Thanks to electromagnetic levitation technology, the train glides almost silently.

Ticket price: 50 yuan one-way, 80 yuan round-trip. The return ticket is valid for seven days.

Metro

Line 2 connects downtown to the airport. It stops at several central locations (Century Avenue, Lujiazui) with numerous transfer options. It operates from morning until late evening.

Since the other terminus of Line 2 is Hongqiao Airport, travelers can travel directly between the two airports with a transfer.

Buses

Several bus routes operate to downtown under the name Airport Line. They run from morning until evening.

It’s advisable to use the Maglev or Line 2 metro, as they will get you to the center much faster.

Night transportation

Late Night Bus handles nighttime transportation. It operates between 11 PM and 5:30 AM.

Main stops: Longyang Road, Century Avenue Metro Station, East Yan’an Road.

Hongqiao International Airport

This airport primarily serves domestic flights and some regional international flights, and is located closer to downtown (about 13 km). It has two terminals (T1 and T2).

Metro

From Terminal 1, Line 10 takes you downtown. There are transfer options at several locations.

From Terminal 2, Lines 2 and 10 operate. Line 2 also takes you directly to Pudong Airport.

Bus

From Terminal 1, bus 807 operates from morning until late evening.

From Terminal 2, several bus routes are available.

Night transportation

One bus route, 316, operates at night. It runs from 11 PM to 5 AM.

Shanghai city transportation

Shanghai’s public transportation is one of the most advanced in China, and the metro is particularly recommended.

The metro is one of the world’s largest and busiest systems with more than 20 lines and hundreds of stations. It’s fast, reliable, and covers the entire city, making it the most popular transportation mode. English signs and automated machines help tourists navigate. The metro network map can be found here!

The city bus network is dense, but without knowledge of Chinese, it can be difficult to navigate as many routes don’t have English signs.

Worth mentioning is the DiDi application, which is equivalent to Uber. The application is also available in English.

Ticket types

Single-trip ticket

On the metro and buses, the ticket price depends on the distance traveled, generally between 3-6 yuan. Tickets can be purchased from automatic machines at metro stations.

Day passes

The one-day pass is valid for 24 hours from first use, allowing unlimited travel on the metro. Price: 18 yuan.

The three-day pass is valid for 72 hours from first use, allowing unlimited travel on the metro. Price: 45 yuan.

Maglev & Metro ticket

There is a combined ticket type for the Maglev magnetic levitation train that runs between Pudong Airport and Longyang metro station.

The one-day pass includes Maglev travel. There is a single-trip Maglev ticket (Maglev Single Trip + Metro One-day Pass: 55 yuan) and a round-trip Maglev ticket (Maglev Round Trip + Metro One-day Pass: 85 yuan).

On the metro, you can travel unlimited times for 24 hours from first use.

One of the economic centers of the Far East, it is located in the middle part of the eastern Chinese coastline, in the Yangtze River estuary area. For a long time, the British ruled the city, then the French, Americans, and Japanese also created their own districts, called concession areas. These still define Shanghai’s character today.

Shanghai attractions

Oriental Pearl Tower

The tower is one of the most recognizable symbols of Shanghai’s skyline.

The 468-meter tall tower is located in the Pudong business district and is particularly impressive due to its futuristic design. Its three main spheres and smaller connecting elements provide a unique aesthetic experience, especially at night when the building is illuminated with colored lights.

The tower has several observation decks offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city. The highest viewing point is at 351 meters, from where you can see even the distant suburbs on clear days. One of the most exciting parts is the glass-floored observation deck, which provides a special experience for those who enjoy heights.

Inside the Oriental Pearl Tower, there is also a museum showcasing Shanghai’s history. Through interactive exhibitions, visitors can learn about the city’s development from ancient times to the present day. The building also houses a revolving restaurant where guests can enjoy the city’s panorama while dining.

The Bund (Wai Tan)

One of the most beautiful and spectacular parts of Shanghai’s historic center.

The promenade along the western bank of the Huangpu River is lined with impressive European-style buildings constructed at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The famous panorama of the Bund creates a sharp contrast with the modern skyscrapers rising on the opposite side.

The area is particularly popular in the evening hours when the skyscrapers shine in colored lights, and the river water reflects the spectacular cityscape. One of its iconic attractions is the Peace Hotel, which attracts visitors with its art deco style and rich history. The riverside promenade is an excellent location for photography.

Shanghai Tower

One of China’s and the world’s tallest buildings, at 632 meters, it dominates the city’s skyline. The spirally twisted design is not only aesthetically special but also aerodynamically optimized, making it more resistant to wind and earthquakes.

The tower’s observation deck is located at 561 meters, making it one of the world’s highest public viewing points. From here, there is a breathtaking panorama of the city, especially at night when Shanghai’s lights are shining. The ultra-modern elevators take visitors to the top in less than a minute.

The Shanghai Tower is also special from a sustainability perspective: its glass covering provides energy-efficient heat regulation, while inside the building, green terraces and natural ventilation systems support environmentally friendly operation. The building also houses luxury offices, hotels, and shopping centers.

Yu Garden (Yuyuan)

The traditional Chinese garden was built in the 16th century during the Ming Dynasty. It is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved classical gardens in Shanghai.

The garden area features meticulously designed ponds, ornate bridges, and pavilions, all among the finest examples of Chinese landscape architecture. The famous Dragon Wall, with its special decorative elements and undulating lines, is one of the most well-known parts of the garden.

Around Yu Garden, there are traditional markets and restaurants where visitors can taste local specialties, such as the famous xiaolongbao steamed dumplings.

Nanjing Lu (Nanjing Road)

One of Shanghai’s most famous shopping streets reflects the vibrant energy of the modern metropolis.

The street consists of two parts: the western section is filled with luxury brand stores, while the eastern section offers more traditional, Chinese-style shops and markets. The famous Shanghai No.1 Department Store, one of the city’s oldest shopping centers, is located on this street.

The evening lights of Nanjing Lu are particularly impressive when the colorful array of neon advertisements and LED displays illuminate the street. The street is full of restaurants, cafes, and entertainment venues, making it a perfect place for an evening stroll.

Jade Buddha Temple (Yufo Si)

One of Shanghai’s most important Buddhist sanctuaries is home to two beautiful jade statues. One is a 1.9-meter seated Buddha, a masterpiece carved from white jade, and the other is a smaller reclining Buddha, symbolizing the tranquility of enlightenment.

The temple was founded in 1882 and has undergone several renovations over the years but has preserved its traditional Chinese architectural style. The building’s red walls, ornate carvings, and gilded Buddha statues create a special atmosphere.

In the sanctuary, visitors can light candles and offer incense. The temple is one of the city’s important spiritual centers, worthily representing China’s religious traditions.

Shanghai Old Street

One of the city’s most authentic districts evokes the old times.

The historic street is located near the Yuyuan Garden and was once one of the city’s most important commercial centers. Most of the buildings reflect the traditional Chinese architectural style from the Ming and Qing dynasties, with red wooden columns, ornate roof structures, and elegant pagodas.

It is famous for its traditional Chinese shops selling handicrafts, silks, calligraphy, and antiques. In the teahouses, you can taste famous Chinese teas, and it’s particularly attractive for food lovers. You can taste traditional city dishes such as the famous xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) and fried crab rolls.

Tianzifang

One of Shanghai’s most charming cultural districts offers a unique blend of traditional Chinese hutongs and modern art galleries.

The area, interwoven with tiny alleys, is located in the former French Concession area and has become a popular tourist attraction. Among the shikumen-style houses built in the early 20th century, there are cozy cafes, design shops, and contemporary art galleries that create a unique atmosphere.

In the shops, you can find unique handicrafts, paintings, and works by local artists. Live music is often heard on the streets, further enhancing the vibrant atmosphere of the place. Food lovers won’t be disappointed either, as there are numerous international and Chinese restaurants in the area where you can taste the city’s traditional flavors.

Xintiandi

One of Shanghai’s most exclusive districts combines traditional shikumen architecture with contemporary shops and restaurants.

What was once a quiet residential area has now become a vibrant area that attracts both tourists and locals. Among the carefully restored buildings, you can find stores of world-famous fashion brands, elegant cafes, and fine dining restaurants.

However, it is not only a paradise for shopping and gastronomy enthusiasts but also has important historical significance. The site of the first congress of the Chinese Communist Party is located here, preserved as a museum.

Wukang

One of the most interesting districts is located in the former French Concession area.

The area is famous for its shikumen-style buildings and art deco architectural solutions that represent one of the defining styles of early 20th century Shanghai. The elegant, shady streets lined with plane trees and historical buildings of the district are popular with tourists.

One of its most famous attractions is the Wukang Building, formerly known as the Normandie Apartments. Built in 1924, it is one of Shanghai’s oldest and most iconic residential buildings, designed by the famous Hungarian-born architect László Hudec. The triangular corner building stylistically recalls the Parisian Haussmann era, a prominent example of French Renaissance and art deco architecture of the time. It closely resembles Flatiron Building in New York.

Qibao

The historic district is famous for its well-preserved old town, canals and traditional Chinese architecture.

It is one of Shanghai’s best-known water towns, dating back to the Sung Dynasty (10th-13th centuries). Its name means „Seven Treasures”, which according to local legend refers to the treasures found in the region.

Its main attraction is the old town canal system, lined with charming stone bridges and traditional wooden houses. The narrow alleys are full of authentic restaurants and street vendors. And the Qibao Museum offers an insight into the history and traditions of the area.

Longhua Temple

Shanghai’s oldest and most significant Buddhist temple has a history spanning more than a thousand years.

The sanctuary, originally built during the Tang Dynasty, has survived numerous wars and reconstructions but still retains its original structure and spiritual significance. The temple complex’s impressive pagoda is particularly noteworthy as it is one of the oldest standing wooden and brick pagodas in China.

The temple area consists of several buildings, including the Hall of the Heavenly Kings and the Great Buddha Hall. Visitors can admire the massive Buddha statues, the smoking incense, and the peaceful inner courtyards. In spring, beautiful cherry trees bloom in the temple garden, providing a special attraction for visitors.

Century Park

Shanghai’s largest urban park is located in the Pudong district, near the modern skyscrapers.

The park covers about 140 hectares, combining Chinese, English, and Japanese garden design elements. It’s an ideal place for nature lovers to relax, with vast green spaces, lakes, and promenades welcoming visitors.

Its central feature is Century Lake, surrounded by shady walkways and pleasant picnic spots. Boat rentals are also available. The park’s various themed gardens, such as the flower garden and bamboo grove, showcase the beauty of nature.

Shanghai Museum

One of the most important cultural institutions boasts an unparalleled collection.

The impressive building, shaped like a bronze vessel, is located in the heart of People’s Square and houses more than 120,000 artifacts. The exhibits include ancient bronze sculptures, porcelain, calligraphy, and classical Chinese paintings.

The museum’s particularly noteworthy bronze collection showcases masterpieces from China’s early dynasties. Visitors can learn about the country’s artistic development from the Neolithic period to the Qing Dynasty. The various galleries are arranged thematically, making it easy to overview the rich history of Chinese art.

Shanghai Natural History Museum

One of China’s most modern and comprehensive natural science institutions showcases the Earth’s wildlife and history with impressive exhibitions.

The museum contains more than 10,000 exhibits, including ancient fossils, rare animal specimens, and interactive scientific displays. It is divided into different thematic zones showcasing nature’s evolution, geological eras, and the diversity of life.

One of the most impressive exhibitions is a giant dinosaur skeleton. In the evolutionary gallery, visitors can learn about the development of living organisms from the simplest unicellular organisms to modern humans. The geological section is particularly exciting, showing the planet’s geological changes, volcanic activities, and mineral resources.

Chinese Art Museum

Located in the former main building of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, the distinctive red pavilion houses one of the country’s most significant art institutions.

The museum primarily displays modern and contemporary Chinese art, providing excellent insight into Chinese art trends of the 20th and 21st centuries. The permanent exhibitions include traditional Chinese paintings, calligraphy, and innovative multimedia installations.

One of the museum’s most popular attractions is the digital reconstruction of the famous painting „Along the River During the Qingming Festival” which interactively presents life in ancient China.

Shanghai Disneyland

The Walt Disney Company’s most modern and one of its largest amusement parks opened in 2016.

The park is divided into six themed zones and features numerous unique attractions specifically designed for Chinese visitors. The Enchanted Storybook Castle is the world’s largest Disney castle, which is not only an iconic attraction but also offers interactive experiences, such as a magical journey into Cinderella’s story.

The amusement park holds special experiences for all age groups. The TRON Lightcycle Power Run is a futuristic roller coaster based on the popular film and is one of the fastest Disney attractions. For adventure seekers, Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure offers a unique experience created with innovative technology, where visitors find themselves in the middle of a naval battle.

Shanghai Ocean Aquarium

One of Asia’s largest and most modern marine life institutions provides an impressive insight into the wildlife of the world’s oceans and rivers.

The aquarium is divided into nine thematic zones, displaying aquatic creatures according to geographical regions. The exhibitions include China’s native aquatic species, the special creatures of the Amazon jungle, and rare animals living in the icy waters of Antarctica.

One of the most exciting parts of the facility is the world’s longest underwater tunnel, which takes visitors through various marine habitats over 155 meters. Through the tunnel’s glass walls, sharks, rays, and other extraordinary marine creatures can be observed up close. The floating movement of giant jellyfish and the sight of colorful coral reefs provide a particularly impressive experience.

Zhujiajiao

The picturesque water town is located on the outskirts of Shanghai and has a history spanning more than 1700 years.

Also known as the „Venice of the East,” the settlement with its narrow canals, traditional stone bridges, and ancient buildings exudes a special atmosphere. The old town quarter is connected by dozens of historical bridges, the most famous being the Fangsheng Bridge, built in 1571, which with its five arches is one of the region’s most impressive structures.

The town holds numerous cultural and historical attractions. The Kezhi Garden, once owned by a wealthy merchant, still preserves the traditional characteristics of Chinese garden design. The temples, traditional teahouses, and period residences offer insight into the everyday life of old China. The old town market is particularly attractive to visitors, as they can taste authentic local foods, handicrafts, and traditional Chinese delicacies there.

Shanghai weather: when is the best time to visit?

Shanghai has a four-season, humid subtropical climate that includes hot, rainy summers and cool, occasionally freezing winters.

• Spring (March-May): Spring is mild and gradually warming, with average temperatures ranging from 10-22°C. This season is rainy, especially during April and May, when humidity also increases. The blooming parks and pleasant weather make this one of the best times to explore the city.
• Summer (June-September): Summer is hot and humid, with frequent rain and storms. Average temperatures range from 25-35°C, but the heat index can feel even higher due to the high humidity. The mei-yu (plum rain) season begins in June, bringing heavy rainfall, while typhoons may occur in August and September.
• Autumn (September-November): Autumn is the most pleasant season, with mild, dry, and sunny weather. Average temperatures range from 15-25°C, and precipitation decreases significantly compared to summer. The fresh air and autumn foliage make this period particularly attractive for tourists.
• Winter (December-February): Winter is cool and occasionally wet, with average temperatures ranging from 2-10°C. Although it rarely snows, the cold, windy weather and high humidity can make it feel colder than the actual temperature.

Best time to visit

The most ideal time to visit Shanghai is during spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November).
