Belfast, the vibrant capital of Northern Ireland, is an excellent example of Irish history, Victorian heritage, and modern culture.

The city draws attention as the birthplace of the Titanic and through its compelling story of the struggle for peace. The former center of shipbuilding has now become a dynamic cultural capital, where murals preserving traces of the political past and 21st-century art spaces equally define the streetscape. Belfast today is not merely the scene of the Troubles era, but a reborn city that proudly showcases its industrial heritage, lively arts scene, and welcoming atmosphere.

Belfast attractions

City Hall

The monumental building of Belfast City Hall standing on Donegall Square is one of the most outstanding examples of Edwardian Baroque architecture in the United Kingdom. The palace, inaugurated in 1906, was designed by Alfred Brumwell Thomas and was erected as a symbol of the city’s prosperity from shipbuilding and the textile industry.

The building’s facade is covered with Portland stone, while the 53-meter-high central dome is covered with greenish copper, which is a far-visible symbol of the city. Several monuments can be found in the garden in front of City Hall, including the Titanic memorial. During visits to the interior spaces, visitors are enchanted by stunning marble staircases, decorated glass windows, and monumental council chambers.

The building can be toured on free guided tours, during which we can learn about Belfast’s political history and the role of City Hall in public life. From the roof, there’s a beautiful panorama of the city center and surrounding mountains, while in the garden we can take a peaceful walk in the heart of the city.

Belfast Cathedral

The construction of St. Anne’s Cathedral began in 1899, but work is still ongoing on certain sections, which lends a unique character to the building. The blend of Romanesque Renaissance and Celtic style features makes this Anglican cathedral special.

The cathedral is most famous for its stunning mosaics and stained glass windows, which together consist of more than 150,000 pieces of glass. The ceiling of the nave is decorated with Irish Celtic motifs, while the mosaic in the baptismal chapel depicts St. Patrick. The Spire of Hope was completed in 2007 and rises 40 meters above the cathedral’s roof.

A special feature is that visitors can climb the tower, from which there is a breathtaking view of Belfast and Belfast Lough. The cathedral regularly hosts concerts and cultural events that take advantage of the building’s exceptional acoustics.

Albert Memorial Clock

One of the city’s most famous landmarks was built between 1869 and 1870 in memory of Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria.

The neo-Gothic style clock tower stands on Queen’s Square and is made of limestone. Its height is approximately 34 meters, and its ornate carvings evoke the grandeur of Belfast’s Victorian era. The building was designed by W. J. Barre and has tilted slightly over time, as it was built on the city’s former marshy ground – for this reason, it’s often called „Belfast’s leaning tower”.

It was stabilized and restored in the early 2000s, so today it shines in its former glory once again. It’s not only an architectural masterpiece but also an important symbol of Belfast’s history and identity.

The city’s iconic building

Peace Wall

The Peace Wall is one of Belfast’s most moving attractions, embodying the city’s divided past. These walls run between the Catholic and Protestant neighborhoods between Falls Road and Shankill Road and have been built since the late 1960s to curb violence between communities.

The largest and most visited section is along Cupar Way in west Belfast, where the wall’s height reaches six meters in places. The concrete and steel structures are covered with thousands of messages, graffiti, and peace demands left by visitors from around the world. Belfast’s political tours regularly stop here, where local guides tell personal stories about the Troubles era.

Although the walls’ original purpose was to curb conflict, today they function as symbols of peace and reconciliation. However, many local communities still believe they are necessary for security, so their complete removal is still pending.

The wall symbolizes the opposition between the two sides

Bobby Sands Mural

The mural along Falls Road is one of the most iconic political artworks in Belfast, preserving the memory of the IRA prison hunger strike. Bobby Sands died in the Maze prison in 1981 after fasting for 66 days for recognition of political prisoner status.

The massive mural depicts Sands’ face on the wall of the Sinn Féin office and is one of the most visited sites in the republican Falls Road area. The original painting has been repainted and renovated several times over the years to preserve its vivid colors and message. Around it, additional works line up depicting other hunger strike victims and important events in the history of the republican movement.

Visitors often stop to take photos in front of the memorial, which is an important stop on political black taxi tours. The walls of the area are decorated with numerous additional murals depicting Irish mythological figures, historical events, and the community’s aspirations.

St. Patrick’s Church

The church on Donegall Street is Belfast’s most important Roman Catholic religious center, built in 1877 in neo-Gothic style. Its construction was made possible by 19th-century Catholic emancipation and the growth of the Irish Catholic community in the city.

The building’s facade features imposing towers and pointed arch windows that evoke the traditions of medieval cathedrals. The interior space is airy, with a three-nave layout, rich carved stone decoration, and a beautiful altar. The church also contains a remarkable organ dating from the late 19th century that regularly sounds during services and concerts.

The church played an important role in the life of Belfast’s Catholic community during the Troubles, when religious identity was a particularly sensitive issue. Today it’s a peaceful pilgrimage site for believers and an architectural attraction for tourists, embodying Irish Catholic heritage in Northern Ireland’s capital.

SS Nomadic

The only surviving sister ship of the Titanic was completed in 1911 in the same Belfast Harland & Wolff shipyard. The tender’s original function was to transport passengers between land and the ocean liner cruise ships, as the Cherbourg port was too shallow for large ships.

The Nomadic is particularly legendary because on April 10, 1912, it transported passengers to the Titanic before its fateful voyage. The ship survived both world wars, then served for decades as a restaurant ship on the banks of the Seine in Paris. In 2006, Belfast purchased back its historic ship, and it was put on display next to the Titanic Belfast visitor center in 2013.

On the carefully restored ship’s deck, the original elegance comes alive: first-class salons with mahogany paneling, crew quarters, and the engine room are all visitable. The ship is a living history lesson about the golden age of shipbuilding and offers a unique opportunity for visitors to see with their own eyes a piece of White Star Line luxury.

Clonard Monastery

Clonard Monastery and Church in the heart of West Belfast, near Falls Road, is home to the Redemptorist religious community, built in 1911 in Neo-Romanesque style. The complex serves as one of the most significant spiritual centers for Belfast’s Catholic community.

The monastery church is built of imposing red brick, while its interior boasts a stunning sanctuary with rich frescoes and stained glass windows. The church is particularly famous for the Clonard Novena nine-day devotion, which takes place every year in June and attracts more than 100,000 believers. This is one of Belfast’s oldest and most popular religious traditions.

During the Troubles, the priests of Clonard Monastery played an important role in peacemaking, organizing meetings between leaders of Catholic and Protestant communities. The monastery library preserves valuable religious and historical documents that provide insight into the city’s Catholic heritage.

Beacon of Hope

Locally known as „Nuala with the Hula”, one of Belfast’s most famous contemporary sculptures stands on the banks of the River Lagan at Thanksgiving Square. Scottish sculptor Andy Scott’s 2007 work is a 19.5-meter-high stainless steel sculpture depicting a female figure with outstretched arms.

The sculpture’s rings and concentric circles are symbols of hope, thanksgiving, and new beginnings, meant to express Belfast’s peaceful transformation. At night, lighting highlights the impressive structure, which reflects in the Lagan water and is visible from far along both banks of the river. The work’s material continuously changes color depending on the time of day and weather.

The sculpture has become a popular meeting place among locals and a favorite photo subject for tourists. The Beacon of Hope is the starting point for walks to the Titanic Quarter and excellently illustrates Belfast’s modern artistic ambitions and the city’s forward-looking attitude.

St George’s Market

Belfast’s oldest covered market, which has been operating continuously since 1896 at the corner of May Street and East Bridge Street. The Victorian market enjoys protected monument status and is one of the finest examples of 19th-century market hall architecture in the United Kingdom.

The market holds a fish market every Friday, a varied produce and craft-antique market on Saturday, and a food and craft market on Sunday. Visitors can buy local products: fresh fish, meat, vegetables, artisan cheeses, breads, and Northern Irish specialties. Live musicians provide atmosphere during shopping, making the market visit a special experience.

It has won several awards, including the title of Best Market in the United Kingdom in 2014, and is one of the most authentic venues for experiencing Belfast’s culinary culture.

Botanic Gardens

The 28-hectare green oasis founded in 1828 is located in the southern part of the city, adjacent to Queen’s University. It was originally the private garden of the Belfast Botanic and Horticultural Society and was opened to the public in 1895.

The garden’s main attraction is the Palm House, a beautiful Victorian-era heritage designed by Charles Lanyon and Richard Turner Jr. between 1839 and 1852. This is one of the earliest and most spectacular heated greenhouses in the world; its domed arrangement and curved structure was an engineering marvel in its time. A wide selection of tropical plants can be found, including rare palm species and exotic flowers.

The Tropical Ravine dates from 1889 and contains original Victorian cast iron elements, a glass dome, and various climate zones. Walking through the garden, we can discover rose beds, special trees, and peaceful ponds that offer an excellent setting for relaxation.

The Palm House is one of the most impressive buildings of the past

Belfast Castle

It stands on the hillside of Cave Hill, about four kilometers north of the city center, offering stunning views of Belfast and Belfast Lough. The current castle was built in 1870 in Scottish baronial style commissioned by the 3rd Marquess of Donegall, after the original 17th-century castle burned down.

The castle’s architecture follows Scottish castle traditions, with towers, gables, and a stepped facade. The chapel is particularly noteworthy with its Pre-Raphaelite style stained glass windows. In the castle garden, visitors search for a special cat statue: legend has it that whoever finds all nine hidden cats will be lucky.

Today the castle houses a visitor center, restaurant, and hosts numerous events and weddings. The surrounding park offers excellent hiking trails, including the path to the summit of Cave Hill, which some know as McArt’s Fort. Jonathan Swift allegedly walked here, and the rock formation inspired the Land of the Giants section of his work Gulliver’s Travels.

Best museums in Belfast

Titanic Belfast

It opened in 2012 on the centenary of the ship’s sinking and has since become Northern Ireland’s most popular tourist attraction. The building stands in the Titanic Quarter, at the site where the world’s most famous ocean liner was born in the Harland & Wolff shipyard.

The museum building itself is an architectural masterpiece: a six-story, aluminum-clad structure that evokes in shape the ship’s bow and icebergs. Inside, nine interactive galleries allow us to learn the complete story of the Titanic’s design, construction, voyage, and tragedy. Visitors can virtually walk through the shipyard, explore the cabins of different classes, and learn in detail about the circumstances of the disaster.

The museum’s collection is enriched by holographic presentations, original documents, personal items, and moving images. The Ocean Exploration Centre section deals with deep-sea research and the discovery of the Titanic wreck. From the roof, there’s an unparalleled panorama of Belfast Lough and the city’s industrial heritage, and next to the museum, the SS Nomadic can also be viewed.

All information can be found here!

Crumlin Road Gaol

It operated as a prison from 1845 to 1996 and is one of Belfast’s most dramatic historical sites. The Victorian-era prison was designed by Charles Lanyon, who also participated in the construction of Belfast City Hall, and the building was an example of modern prison architecture of the era.

During its 150 years of operation, the prison held more than 25,000 prisoners within its walls, including political prisoners, murderers, and figures from both sides of the Troubles. 17 executions were carried out in the prison, the last in 1961. Legend has it that under the prison, a tunnel led across to the courthouse on the other side of Crumlin Road, where defendants were escorted.

Visitors can explore the cell blocks, execution wing, women’s section, and central guard tower area through guided tours. The museum’s exhibitions showcase the prison’s daily life, famous prisoners, and its role in political conflicts.

All information can be found here!

W5

The W5 interactive science center is one of Belfast’s most popular family-friendly attractions in the Odyssey complex, near the Titanic Quarter. The name refers to the questions „Who, What, Where, When, Why” and the center opened its doors in 2001.

More than 250 interactive exhibits await visitors on four floors, guiding children and adults alike into the world of natural science, technology, engineering sciences, and mathematics. Visitors can try out various experiments, learn about the functioning of the human body, discover the laws of physics, and participate in creative construction projects.

W5 continuously updates its exhibitions and programs to always offer new experiences to returning guests. Its special features include a climax tower where balloons can be magnetically levitated, a shadow freezing wall, and an energy room. The center is an ideal place on rainy days and for families who want to learn in an entertaining way.

All information can be found here!

The MAC

The Metropolitan Arts Centre is Belfast’s largest contemporary arts center, which opened in 2012 in the Cathedral Quarter. The building’s modern glass and metal structure creates a striking contrast with the surrounding Victorian buildings.

The center encompasses three art galleries, two theater spaces, and creative workshops on three floors. The galleries feature contemporary visual art exhibitions showcasing both local and international artists. Exhibitions change every few weeks, so there’s always a new experience for visitors. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, video art, and installations alike.

Theater spaces host performances, dance productions, comedy nights, and music concerts. The MAC is an important venue in Belfast’s cultural life and for the local arts community. On the ground floor of the building, there’s a café and an art shop where works by local artists can be purchased.

Ulster Museum

Northern Ireland’s largest museum and one of its most visited cultural institutions has been operating near the Botanic Gardens since 1929. The institution completed its large-scale renovation and expansion in 2009, during which it was enriched with modern galleries.

The museum’s collection consists of several departments: the natural history section contains dinosaur skeletons and displays of Irish wildlife. The archaeology department boasts a rich Irish Celtic and medieval collection, including the Broighter gold hoard discovered in 1928. The art galleries preserve Irish and European paintings, sculptures, and decorative art objects from the Renaissance to the present day.

Particularly noteworthy is the museum’s permanent exhibition „Conflict” which presents the history of Belfast and Northern Ireland from the Troubles period to the present day. The local history section provides insight into Belfast’s industrial past, the linen industry, and shipbuilding.

Admission is free!

Belfast weather: when is the best time to travel?

Belfast’s weather is characterized by an oceanic climate, which means moderate temperatures and sufficient precipitation throughout the year. Despite its northern latitude, the city experiences relatively mild winters and cool summers due to the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean.

Spring (March–May):

The spring months bring gradually warming weather, when temperatures range between 8-15°C. By the end of April and May, the city becomes green, with plants blooming in the Botanic Gardens and parks. Precipitation is moderate, although capricious weather changes are common. Spring is an ideal time to visit city attractions, as there are no crowds yet and days are getting longer.

Summer (June–August):

The summer period is Belfast’s warmest part, when temperatures hover around 15-20°C, rarely rising above 25°C. June is the driest month, while July and August bring more variable weather. Summer is festival season: the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival takes place in June, and Féile an Phobail in August. The long days (around the summer solstice, daylight lasts until 5 PM) are excellent for outdoor activities and exploring the surrounding countryside.

Autumn (September–November):

The autumn months gift Belfast’s parks and gardens with varied colors. September is still pleasant, with temperatures around 14-17°C, while November is cooler, at 7-10°C. Precipitation gradually increases; October and November can be particularly rainy. Autumn is a suitable time for exploring museums and indoor attractions, as well as experiencing local pub culture.

Winter (December–February):

The winter months are cool but rarely freezing, with temperatures ranging between 4-8°C. Snow is a rare phenomenon in Belfast city center, though it may occur on the surrounding Cave Hill and higher areas. December brings a festive atmosphere with Christmas markets and light decorations. The winter months are the wettest, with frequent overcast, rainy days.

Best time to travel:

The best time to visit Belfast is between May and September, when weather conditions are most pleasant and days are longest. June and July are particularly ideal, when temperatures average around 17-19°C, relatively little rain falls, and numerous cultural events and festivals color the city’s life. September is also an excellent choice: the weather is still pleasant, tourist crowds are decreasing, and autumn colors lend a special atmosphere to the parks.

Wales is one of the most magical countries in the United Kingdom, where medieval castles, picturesque villages, and breathtaking natural landscapes await tourists.

Wales is located as England’s western neighbor, surrounded by sea on three sides. The country’s rich historical heritage stretches back from Roman times to the Middle Ages. Welsh culture is unique, boasting its own language, traditions, and musical heritage.

Like Scotland, it has numerous castles and diverse, wild romantic landscapes.

Conwy Castle

On the coast of North Wales, in the picturesque town of Conwy, stands this 13th-century fortress, which was one of the most important structures of English King Edward I’s Welsh campaign.

The castle was built between 1283 and 1287 and is considered one of the finest examples of medieval castle architecture. Its eight massive towers and thick walls still provide an impressive sight today. Its special feature is that the medieval town wall has been perfectly preserved, surrounding the old town. This is one of the most complete medieval defense systems in Europe.

From the castle walls, there is a beautiful view of the River Conwy and the landscape stretching at the foot of the surrounding mountains. The remains of the Great Hall standing in the castle courtyard and the royal apartments still convey the former luxury.

The castle is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is visited by more than 200,000 visitors every year. Besides the castle, it’s worth seeing one of the smallest houses in Great Britain, which is only 1.8 meters wide. In the town’s charming little streets, numerous small shops, cafés, and restaurants await tourists, offering local specialties and traditional Welsh dishes.

Cardiff

Wales’ capital and largest city is located in the southern part of the country, on the shore of the Bristol Channel. Once the world’s largest coal port, it has now become a modern city.

The castle standing in its center encompasses more than 2000 years of history. On its grounds, you can find a Roman fort, Norman motte, and Victorian castle alike. In the 19th century, commissioned by the Marquess of Bute, architect William Burges rebuilt the castle, creating one of the most magnificent examples of Victorian Gothic. The richly decorated rooms of the Clock Tower and the corner bastion, including the famous Animal Wall, create a wonderful atmosphere.

A popular part is Cardiff Bay, which was once a run-down dock area but is now Wales’ cultural and entertainment center. Here you’ll find the Wales Millennium Centre, the country’s most important cultural institution, as well as the Welsh parliament building, the Senedd.

Snowdonia National Park

The area stretching across northern Wales is Great Britain’s second-largest national park, covering 2,170 square kilometers.

Its namesake is Mount Snowdon, which at 1,085 meters high is Wales’ highest point. The park’s landscapes are characterized by steep mountains, crystal-clear lakes, ancient forests, and picturesque valleys.

Climbing Snowdon is one of Wales’ most popular hikes, with six different paths leading to the summit. The easiest and most frequently used route is the Llanberis Path, while the steepest and most challenging is the Watkin Path. Those who don’t want to walk can reach the summit by the Snowdon Mountain Railway, a rack railway that has been carrying visitors since 1896.

The national park includes many other mountains, including the Glyder range and the Carnedd range. The area contains Betws-y-Coed, the picturesque village known as the „Gateway to Snowdonia” which is an excellent starting point for hiking. The park has more than 2,300 kilometers of hiking trails, from easy family walks to challenging mountaineering hikes.

Portmeirion

On the coast of North Wales, beside Cardigan Bay, you’ll find this special architectural wonder that evokes an Italian-style Mediterranean village in the middle of the Welsh landscape.

Architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis created this settlement between 1925 and 1975, which is one of the most unique creations of British architecture. The village buildings shine with bright colors, and every detail is carefully planned. The central square, the campanile (bell tower), the colorful houses, and the terraces overlooking the sea all evoke the Italian Riviera.

The exotic gardens belonging to the village are full of tropical and subtropical plants that thrive in the Welsh climate thanks to the moderating effect of the Gulf Stream. Portmeirion gained fame thanks to the British television series „The Prisoner” which was filmed here in the 1960s. It’s still the location for numerous films and television productions, and festivals are held here annually.

Caernarfon Castle

On the North Wales coast, on the shore of the Menai Strait, stands this monumental fortification, which is a symbol of English King Edward I’s Welsh conquest.

The castle’s construction began in 1283 on the site of an earlier Welsh fort, and during planning, the walls of Constantinople were taken as a model. The characteristic polygonal towers and colored sandstone walls provide a unique sight.

However, its historical significance goes beyond its architectural value: the first Prince of Wales, the later King Edward VII, was born here in 1284. According to tradition, King Edward I presented his newborn son here to the Welsh as their new prince. In 1969, the investiture ceremony of Prince Charles (then still prince) as Prince of Wales was also held here.

The castle is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Wales’ most visited historical monuments. The museum in the castle courtyard presents the region’s history and the castle’s role in Welsh-English conflicts. From the castle walls, there’s a beautiful view of the Menai Strait and the opposite Anglesey island. It’s also worth walking around the town, as during its more than 800-year history, it has preserved its medieval character with narrow streets and traditional Welsh buildings.

Swansea

Wales’ second-largest city is located on the eastern edge of the Gower Peninsula, on the shore of Swansea Bay.

Despite the city’s industrial past, it has now become a modern cultural center that is proud of its Welsh identity and rich artistic heritage. Swansea was the birthplace of Dylan Thomas, the famous Welsh poet, and many locations in the city are connected to his literary work.

In the center, you’ll find Swansea Market, one of the largest covered markets in Wales. Here they sell local products, traditional Welsh specialties, and handmade creations. The promenade along the coast, the Marina, with its yacht harbor and restaurants, is a popular meeting point.

Swansea’s cultural life is extremely rich: the Grand Theatre, Taliesin Arts Centre, and Dylan Thomas Centre are all significant cultural institutions. Swansea Bay’s long sandy shore is an ideal location for walking and water sports, while the nearby Gower Peninsula offers numerous hiking opportunities.

Pembrokeshire Coast National Park

The country’s only coastal national park covers 629 square kilometers.

The park’s central element is the 299-kilometer-long coastal path that connects Wales’ most beautiful coastal landscapes. The steep cliffs, hidden coves, and sandy beaches create a varied landscape.

Among its most famous attractions are the colorful cliffs around Stackpole Quay, where limestone and sandstone layers form spectacular formations. Barafundle Bay is often called one of Great Britain’s most beautiful beaches, with its crystal-clear water and golden sand.

The national park is also famous for its rich wildlife: it’s home to one of Great Britain’s largest puffin colonies, and dolphins and seals are often seen in the coastal waters. Skomer and Skokholm islands are protected natural areas where thousands of seabirds nest. The park area contains numerous ancient monuments, including prehistoric burial sites, Iron Age forts, and medieval castles.

Llangollen

In the central part of North Wales, in the Dee Valley, you’ll find this charming little town famous for its international music festival and picturesque railway line.

Its name means „Church of Saint Collen” and the town indeed developed around a monastery. The settlement holds a special place in Welsh culture, as it hosts the annual Royal International Musical Eisteddfod festival.

The town’s most famous attraction is the Llangollen Railway, a historic steam railway built in 1865. The trains travel through beautiful landscapes in the Dee Valley, stopping at several stations during the 16-kilometer journey. The railway station itself is also a museum that presents the history of Victorian rail transport. In the town center, you’ll find the famous Llangollen Bridge, a 14th-century stone bridge that spans the River Dee.

The Llangollen Canal, which runs alongside the town, is a popular location for narrow boat excursions. The canal was built in the 18th century and is part of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Anglesey Island

Anglesey Island, lying off the coast of North Wales, is connected to the mainland via the Menai Strait.

The island’s Welsh name is „Ynys Môn”, meaning „Island of Mona” and it was one of the most important centers of Celtic druid culture. Today it’s home to some of Wales’ most beautiful natural and historical treasures, with diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage.

The island’s coastline is 200 kilometers long and hides numerous beautiful beaches. Llanddwyn Island is a romantic location where a monument was erected to Saint Dwynwen, the Welsh saint of love. Red Wharf Bay’s long sandy shore is ideal for family beach activities and water sports.

Among its historical monuments, Beaumaris Castle stands out – Edward I’s last and most perfect Welsh castle – along with numerous ancient monuments. The Bryn Celli Ddu Neolithic burial chamber looks back on a 5,000-year history. The island’s largest settlement is Holyhead, an important port town and starting point for ferry services to Ireland.

Tintern Abbey

In the heart of the Wye Valley, near the English-Welsh border, stands the beautiful ruin of this Gothic abbey.

The abbey was founded in 1131 by Cistercian monks and was an important monastic center for more than 400 years. After its dissolution in 1536, it slowly began to decay, but its romantic ruins still provide an impressive sight today.

The vegetation growing among the high arches and columns creates a special atmosphere. The ruins of the main church, the foundations of the monastic buildings, and the still-standing walls all testify to the former grandeur. The abbey also inspired romantic poetry – William Wordsworth’s popular poem is about this very place.

The Wye Valley itself also boasts special natural beauty. The river’s winding bed, the surrounding wooded hills, and the alternating fields and forests create a picturesque landscape. Around the abbey, you’ll find numerous hiking trails along which you can discover the valley’s rich flora and fauna. The nearby town of Chepstow is also worth a visit, as it’s home to one of Great Britain’s oldest stone castles.

Gower Peninsula

The peninsula stretching west from Swansea city was the first area in Great Britain to be designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1956.

The 19-kilometer-long peninsula boasts stunning coastlines, ancient hillforts, and rich historical heritage. The area’s diverse landscape offers experiences for every nature lover, from sand dunes to steep cliffs.

Its most famous beach is Rhossili Bay, often called Great Britain’s most beautiful coastline. The three-mile-long sandy shore, Rhossili Down hill, and Worm’s Head rock formation together create a breathtaking panorama. Worm’s Head is a rock formation that becomes isolated during high tide, which can be reached on foot during low tide, but the return journey is only possible during low tide.

Gower is also rich in historical monuments. Arthur’s Stone, located in the Rhossili area, is a 5,000-year-old Neolithic burial chamber that, according to legend, is the remains of King Arthur’s table.

Harlech Castle

On top of a cliff overlooking Cardigan Bay stands this impressive medieval fortification, one of the most imposing among Edward I’s Welsh castles.

The castle was built between 1283 and 1287 and is considered a perfect example of concentric castle architecture. The massive walls and towers rising from the mountainside still give the impression of being impenetrable.

Its special strategic significance lay in controlling traffic from both land and sea. The areas below the castle were once washed by the sea, so the fortress could also be approached by ship. Today the sea has receded, but from the castle there’s still a wonderful view of Cardigan Bay and the distant Snowdonia mountains. From the castle courtyard, on clear days, even the shores of Ireland are visible.

Throughout its history, the castle survived several famous sieges. The most famous was the siege from 1404-1409, when Welsh prince Owain Glyndŵr captured it and made it his headquarters. The castle later played an important role during the Wars of the Roses. Today it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the surrounding town of Harlech is an excellent starting point for exploring Snowdonia National Park.

Brecon Beacons National Park

The park stretching across central South Wales covers 1,344 square kilometers and includes four different mountain ranges.

The park’s namesake is the Brecon Beacons range, whose highest point is Pen y Fan at 886 meters high. The park’s landscape is varied, with everything from open mountain pastures to deep valleys and waterfalls.

Pen y Fan is the highest point in southern Wales and the park’s most popular hiking destination. Among the routes leading to the summit, the easiest is the path starting from Storey Arms, which is about 4 kilometers long. From the summit, there’s an unparalleled view of the surrounding mountains and valleys; on clear days, even the Bristol Channel is visible.

The southern part of the national park, the Fforest Fawr area, boasts numerous impressive waterfalls. The special feature of Sgwd yr Eira waterfall is that visitors can walk behind the waterfall. The Waterfall Country, as locals call it, hides dozens of waterfalls found in the valleys of the Nedd, Hepste, and Pyrddin rivers. The park area also contains some British caves, including the Dan yr Ogof cave system, which is one of Great Britain’s largest caves and has impressive stalactite formations.

St Davids

Great Britain’s smallest city boasts only 1,600 inhabitants, but its historical and cultural significance far exceeds its size.

St Davids is the birthplace of Wales’ patron saint, Saint David, and one of the most important centers of Welsh Christianity. The city is located at the westernmost point of the Pembrokeshire coast and was already a Christian pilgrimage site in the 6th century.

The city’s central attraction is St Davids Cathedral, the smallest cathedral in Great Britain. The cathedral stands in a valley, which is unusual since most medieval cathedrals were built on hills or elevated locations. The foundations of the Norman-style building were laid in the 12th century over Saint David’s shrine. The cathedral’s interior is impressive, especially the wooden vault ceiling and rich stone carvings.

Next to the cathedral stand the ruins of the bishop’s palace, built in the 14th century and once one of Wales’ most magnificent residences. Near the city, you’ll find Whitesands Bay, a beautiful sandy beach popular among surfers.

Devil’s Bridge (Pontarfynach)

Located in the heart of the Rheidol Valley, southeast of Aberystwyth, it comprises three bridges built one above the other.

The lowest bridge is the legendary „Devil’s Bridge”, built in the 11th century, and many folk tales and legends are associated with it. According to legend, the devil built the bridge in a single night in exchange for possession of the first soul to cross it. The middle one is an 18th-century bridge, and the top one is an iron structure built in 1901.

The bridges span a deep gorge where Mynach stream joins the Rheidol River. The water plunges 90 meters into the valley, creating the spectacular Mynach Falls. The view from different levels enchants every visitor.

Well-developed walkways are found around the area, from which we can admire the bridges and waterfall from different angles. The viewpoint called Punchbowl is particularly popular among photographers. The Devil’s Bridge Steam Railway, a narrow-gauge railway, also starts from here, traveling along a scenic route through the Welsh highlands.

Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland, but not the capital. Like Edinburgh, it offers many attractions and the Scottish lifestyle can be enjoyed here too.

Glasgow is the third most populous city in the United Kingdom. Its name in Gaelic means “green place”. Located along the River Clyde, in the central-western part of the Scottish Lowlands, it is 75 km west of Edinburgh.

Glasgow Cathedral

The seat of the Archbishop of Glasgow, it is the oldest cathedral on the Scottish mainland and Glasgow’s oldest building.

Dedicated to Saint Mungo, Glasgow’s patron saint, whose tomb is in the middle of the lower church, the cathedral was built in the 12th century. Although beautiful inside and out, it is considered “average” among the famous cathedrals.

Admission is free, but it is advisable to book in advance! (You need to reserve a specific time slot.)

There are many interesting and beautiful graves, offering a nice view of the city. The hill can be accessed via the Bridge of Sighs next to the cathedral.

Liverpool is outstanding not only for football and The Beatles but also for its architectural and cultural attractions.

The city boasts over 2,500 listed buildings. It has an exceptionally high number of non-Anglican buildings along the banks of the Mersey.

Football has long defined the city’s life. It is home to two internationally renowned and successful clubs: Liverpool FC and Everton. Both teams have won multiple English top-flight championships and several international cups.

In addition to sports, the city is a world-renowned cultural center, especially famous for its popular music. Liverpool is the birthplace of The Beatles, one of the most successful bands of all time.

Liverpool attractions

Liverpool Cathedral

One of the largest and most impressive religious buildings in the UK, the cathedral has gradually become a symbol of the city and remains an important center for the Anglican community.

Construction began in 1904 based on the designs of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and took over seventy years to complete, finishing in 1978.

Built in Gothic style, it features massive, steeply rising towers and intricately detailed facades. The sculptures and carvings on the main facade depict numerous figures from the Christian faith, including saints and evangelists.

The building’s length exceeds 180 meters, and its tower rises more than 100 meters, making it one of the tallest in the UK.

The interior is adorned with rich wood carvings and marble columns, and one of its most beautiful features is the large stained glass window, one of the largest in the country.

Royal Albert Dock

Liverpool’s most popular tourist attraction, particularly lively in the evening as a community hub.

Opened in 1846, the dock complex became famous for its unique architectural solutions and historical significance. It was the first structure in the UK built entirely of non-combustible materials — cast iron, brick, and stone — avoiding the use of wood.

Originally a center for industrial trade, the Royal Albert Dock is now a hub of cultural and tourist activity, housing museums, galleries, restaurants, and shops.

The dock received the royal title in 2018, recognizing its important role in Liverpool’s history and development.

The Beatles Statue

This bronze sculpture group was erected in 2015 and depicts the four members of the band: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.

Created by British artist Andy Edwards, the statues show the four musicians walking. The statue commemorates The Beatles’ last joint photoshoot in Liverpool, which took place in 1963. The life-sized statues are intricately detailed, capturing the unique characteristics of the musicians, such as John Lennon’s distinctive glasses and Ringo Starr’s drumsticks.

Its location is significant, as the Pier Head and Albert Dock areas are closely tied to The Beatles’ history.

St George’s Hall

This neoclassical building is one of the most impressive in downtown Liverpool. Opened in 1854, it was designed by Sir Harvey Lonsdale Elmes. It has hosted numerous important historical events, including court trials and political gatherings. The building was a central hub of civic life in the 19th century.

Its Great Hall is one of the largest column-free spaces in Europe, renowned for its mosaic floor and grand ceiling. Due to its excellent acoustics, it frequently hosts concerts and various events. It houses one of the world’s largest organs, with over 7,000 pipes.

Royal Liver Building

Located at the Pier Head, the building also serves as an observation deck. Completed in 1911, it was one of the world’s first reinforced concrete structures at the time. Designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas, it blends neoclassical and art deco elements. Today, it functions as an office building.

Atop the building are two famous bird statues, the Liver Birds, which are symbols of the city. It is said that one bird watches over the city while the other watches the sea. Legend has it that if the birds ever fly away, Liverpool will cease to exist.

The building’s central feature is a large clock tower visible from all sides. The clock faces are larger than those of Big Ben in London.

Having barely returned from London at the end of March, I was already searching for my next destination. I found it – a two-day trip to Scotland in mid-May: one day in Edinburgh and one in Glasgow.

In early April, I saw a 40 euro round-trip ticket to Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh, on Wizz Air and booked it right away. The flight was scheduled to leave on Thursday evening and return on Saturday night, allowing for two full days. Since the attractions in both Edinburgh and Glasgow are fairly concentrated, I allocated one day for each city.

As of March 18, the UK had lifted all COVID-related restrictions, making travel to Scotland hassle-free for Hungarian citizens. Mask wearing was no longer required, although it was mandatory on the Wizz Air flight back home (I don’t understand why, as it wasn’t needed on the way there).

Edinburgh

I stayed in a hostel, starting my long day at 8:45 AM on Friday. Those who can handle a lot of walking can explore the city on foot. Expect to walk well over 10 km, but with so many attractions, you often only need to cover a few hundred meters at a time.

The weather was overcast and windy all day, but we are in the UK, where this is no surprise…

The starting point was the Holyroodhouse Palace, which I could only view from the outside in the morning.

Opposite it is the parliament building, which doesn’t look like what it actually is. It’s a modern building along a street with just a few security guards lounging around. But Scotland is a peaceful country; there’s nothing for the rulers to fear…

From there, I climbed up to Calton Hill, which has several monuments and a stunning view. It’s home to Scotland’s national monument, the Nelson Monument, the Dugald Stewart Monument, and a gallery. It’s worth spending some time at the base, enjoying the panorama from the sea to the city center.

Continuing west on Princess Street, the Scott Monument is visible from afar. You can climb up the Gothic tower. I didn’t go in, as the views from Calton Hill and the castle can’t be surpassed.

Not far away, the national gallery opens at 10 AM, a must-visit for art enthusiasts. But the good news for everyone is that it’s free, so I also took a round.

In the large garden along the way, I checked out the Ross Fountain, which offers a great view of the castle soaring above the rock.

Dean Village is just a 10-minute walk away. This one or two-street area evokes old Edinburgh. Along the stream, you find real tranquility, and the beautiful buildings along the stream offer a lovely view.

I continued west along the Leith stream to visit the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, also free. Well, there are some interesting exhibits here, that’s for sure. 🙂

Then I headed downtown, but on the way, it’s mandatory to check out St Mary’s Cathedral, both inside and out. And entry is free here too!

The southern part of the castle was my next target. Through Grassmarket, I went to the National Museum. Now, this was exactly to my taste.

In Scotland, several cemeteries are tourist attractions. In Edinburgh, this is Greyfriars Kirkyard, where you can peacefully walk and take photos among the grave markers.

I saved the Royal Mile, the main street, for last, with the castle rising at its western end. On the street, you can also freely visit St Giles’ Cathedral, but there are other possible activities (e.g., an optical illusion museum, whisky tour).

The view from the castle over the city is beautiful. Unfortunately, the northern part was not visible due to renovation. I didn’t go inside the castle, as I had enough cultural shock for one day, and this was plenty for Friday.

I enjoy evening walks, so I wandered around downtown even after dark. The Royal Mile was almost empty, much more relaxed than the daytime crowd. And you must see the illuminated castle from below!

Glasgow

Early Saturday morning, I checked out of my accommodation and took the 7:30 AM bus to Glasgow. The journey took 80 minutes, and I bought the ticket online for 3.50 GBP.

In Glasgow too, I explored the city on foot, using the subway just once. There’s a circular route that operates in both directions, covering most major attractions, so you can replace part of the walk with it.

Starting from Buchanan bus station, I headed west. First, I visited the University of Glasgow, passing through Kelvingrove Park. The building itself is beautiful, and so is the Hunterian Museum inside it, offering free exhibitions on various topics.

Next, I went to the Kelvingrove Museum, which is also free to enter. It’s a high-quality museum, covering everything from different cultures to natural sciences. I spent a bit less time there due to a fire alarm that required evacuating the building, but I managed to see most of it.

Then came the Riverside Museum along the Clyde River. Needless to say, it’s also free! I particularly enjoy transportation museums, and this one is top-notch. One of the best features is an old-style street section, giving a lifelike impression in semi-darkness. On the riverside, you can also explore a sailing ship.

There, I tried a Scottish Square Sausage dish. It’s a square meat patty in a bun-like pastry. As they say, it was okay, but I prefer our local sausages. 😊

I walked to the nearby Partick subway station and took the subway to St Enoch station. Walking along the river, I reached Glasgow Green park, where attractions include the McLennan Arch, the Nelson Monument, and the People’s Palace. The latter is a small exhibition showcasing the city’s old life (also free).

In brilliant weather, I visited the Necropolis, a Victorian cemetery on a hill. Many tourists were with me, enjoying the beautiful view and good weather, and the extraordinary attraction!

At the base of the cemetery hill stands the cathedral. Supposedly, you need to book online for entry, but they let everyone in. Inside, it’s more modest than previous churches I visited, but it’s much more imposing from the outside.

Next, I headed to George Square, where Celtic football team fans were celebrating their league title. The square features several statues and the central Scott Monument.

The last stop of the day was Buchanan Street, the main street. It was Saturday and the weather was nice, so naturally, it was crowded. I sat on a bench and listened to the indispensable sound of the Scottish bagpipes.

My bus to the airport left at 6:15 PM, and I flew back with Wizz Air’s flight at 10:15 PM.

Summary

In two days, I managed to explore two great but distinct cities. Edinburgh represents the old times, while Glasgow more so the modern era. I found the old-style houses very beautiful.

A bonus is that most museums are free and of high quality. I visited almost all of them, even if I didn’t spend much time in some.

More days could easily be devoted to both cities, but I managed it with a quick trip. I can only encourage everyone to plan a trip here; you won’t regret it!

Edinburgh is a city rich in historical attractions, making it one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Additionally, the unique Scottish culture and lifestyle offer a special experience for tourists.

Located on the eastern coast of the Southern Scottish Highlands, Edinburgh sits on the southern part of the delta mouth of the Forth River. Its port is Leith. The city, founded in 626 by Edwin of Northumbria, sprawls over a volcanic terrain and became the capital of Scotland in the 15th century.

The backbone of Edinburgh’s vibrant cultural life is its nearly year-round continuous festivals, among which the Edinburgh Festival held every August, and the closely associated The Fringe, the world’s largest international arts festival, stand out.

Edinburgh Castle

Perched atop a volcanic rock peak, the castle is an ancient fortress that served as a royal residence for several centuries. Located at the upper end of the famous Royal Mile street, in the western part of Edinburgh’s Old Town, it’s a must-visit for its spectacular city views.

Having served defensive purposes, the castle houses numerous military facilities. Its most famous parts include the Crown Square (where the royal palace stands), the Portcullis Gate, the Argyle Tower, St. Margaret’s Chapel, and the Mons Meg siege cannon.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a military band festival that has become a symbol of Edinburgh and all of Scotland, is held here annually.

Originally built in 1128 by David I as Holyrood Abbey, the ruins of the abbey can be seen on the northeast side of the building.
Constructed using metal, oak, and granite with innovative architectural solutions, the design was inspired by the surrounding landscape, resembling flowers and an inverted boat.

St. Andrews

A small town on Scotland’s eastern coast (in Fife county), renowned for its tradition-rich university and as the birthplace of golf.

Here lies the unique St Andrews Links golf facility. In 1754, one of the first golf clubs, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, was established. The famous clubhouse is adjacent to the Old Course, one of the world’s most famous golf courses.

Outside the town are the ruins of the cathedral, built between the 13th and 16th centuries and destroyed during the Reformation by followers of John Knox. It’s presumed that relics of Apostle Andrew were placed here, leading to the incorporation of the St. Andrew’s Cross in the Scottish flag.

Glencoe Valley

A volcanic valley on the Scottish Highlands, a popular destination for hikers.

Tall peaks, misty valleys, and numerous streams make this landscape breathtaking. In summer, it’s a haven for hikers and climbers, while in winter, it attracts winter sports enthusiasts.

Also known as the „Valley of Tears” referencing the historical event of the 1692 Glencoe Massacre (where English soldiers killed 38 people).

This is where the scenes were shot where the Hogwarts Express passes through the landscape. This bridge has now become a cult attraction among fans, attracting thousands of tourists each year.

The viaduct consists of 21 arches, each 15 meters wide. The total length of the bridge is 380 meters, and it arches about 30 meters high over the Glenfinnan valley.

A visit to the Highland Wildlife Park is a must, where you can see various animal species, including tigers, wolves, and polar bears, living freely in a beautiful forested and hilly environment.

Aberdeen

Scotland’s third-largest city, it’s also the center of the northeastern region.

It boasts a long, sandy coastline, making it popular among tourists. These beaches extend north of the city for several kilometers.

The city also offers plenty of cultural attractions. The most popular is the Aberdeen Art Gallery, showcasing Victorian, Scottish, and 20th-century British paintings. Another notable institution is the Maritime Museum, which presents centuries of history with the North Sea.

Melrose Abbey

Located in the town of Melrose, its name symbolizes a combination of ‘mell’ (mason’s hammer) and ‘rose’ (a symbol of the Virgin Mary), to whom the Cistercians dedicated the abbey.

The abbey was founded by the Cistercian order under the command of King David I of Scotland in the early 12th century. It’s one of Britain’s most beautiful abbey ruins. Here lies the heart of King Robert I of Scotland.

Nearby are the Roman-era Trimontium fort and Dryburgh Abbey.

Mousa Broch

Part of the Shetland Islands, northeast of the mainland, Mousa Island hosts the best-preserved ancient building.

The double-walled tower (broch) is 12 meters high and 15 meters in diameter, likely built around 100 BC. The original staircase is still visible inside.

Loch Ness

Scotland’s most famous and second-largest lake, known primarily for the mythical monster said to inhabit it.

The legend has circulated for centuries, with the first known mention in Saint Columba’s legend from 565 AD.

In 1934, a photo depicting a long-necked monster emerging from the water was taken. Although later revealed as a hoax, the fame has since made the lake a popular attraction.

On its western side is Urquhart Castle, one of Scotland’s largest fortresses.

Lerwick

If you’re in the Shetland Islands, the region’s center is a must-visit! Those who have seen the crime series „Shetland” will recognize the town. 🙂

It’s home to one of the most famous festivals, Up Helly Aa. Costumed participants parade with torches, culminating in burning a Viking-like ship.

Isle of Skye

Located in the northwest of Scotland within the Hebrides archipelago, it’s considered one of the most beautiful areas.

The small island, with steep mountain ranges, cliffs plunging into the sea, and deep inlets, is rich in natural beauty.

Inhabited since the Mesolithic era, it has a history of Viking rule and was owned by the MacLeod and MacDonald clans.

The ancestral home of the MacLeod family, Dunvegan Castle, is also here.

Orkney Islands

A group of about 70 islands (around 20 inhabited), located 16 kilometers north of the Scottish mainland’s Caithness. The main island is called Mainland (Pomona).

For those who love stunning natural attractions, the coastal areas are a must-visit. The towering cliffs provide breathtaking scenery.

On the main island is the „Heart of Neolithic Orkney” part of the World Heritage Site. This group includes a large burial chamber (Maes Howe), two stone circles (the Stones of Stenness and the Ring of Brodgar), and the Skara Brae settlement.

The Ring of Brodgar, located on Bodgar Headland, predates Stonehenge and ancient Egyptian architectural wonders by thousands of years. Millennia ago, the Orkney Islands were the center of Britain.

Anstruther

This picturesque little fishing town is situated on the coast of the Firth of Forth.

The settlement is filled with beautiful, well-maintained old buildings, among which stands out the centuries-old St. Adrian’s Church. One of its most popular attractions is the Scottish Fisheries Museum, which presents the history of Scottish fishing through detailed exhibitions.

The town hosts numerous cultural and music events throughout the year, including the famous Anstruther Harbour Festival, which celebrates local traditions and the community with music, dances, and boat races.

England is not just about London. The countryside also deserves exploration! Here are 16 wonderful attractions that rank among England’s most beautiful places!

It is bordered to the north by Scotland, to the west by Wales, and to the rest of the way by the North Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, the Irish Sea, and the English Channel.
London

The capital of England is one of the world’s most famous and visited cities.

There’s no need to say much about London, as it offers endless activities across various themes. I spent three days in London but couldn’t cover all planned sights. It’s definitely worth a 4-5 day visit.

Stonehenge

This stone monument still raises many questions today. The archaeological site and its surroundings are part of UNESCO’s World Heritage.

Its construction started around 2500 BC and finished around 2100 BC. The latest theory suggests it symbolizes the unity of tribes previously engaged in warfare.

The complex consists of several circular structures. An outer ditch is followed by a bank, with a northeastern entrance leading to the so-called Avenue. In the center, sarsen stones are arranged in a horseshoe shape, originally linked by horizontal stones.

Windsor Castle

Located west of London, it is the world’s largest occupied castle.

Covering about 52,000 square kilometers, it’s one of the British royal family’s most important residences (the other being Scotland’s famous Balmoral Castle). Over time, the castle has served as a garrison, fortress, home, royal seat, and prison. It has been continuously added to since the 14th century, with the most recent changes following the 1992 fire.

The St. George’s Chapel deserves special mention as a prime example of English Gothic architecture. It has been the venue for numerous royal services, weddings, and particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries, burials.

White Cliffs of Dover

Located in the southeastern coastal town of Dover, known for its port and the iconic white cliffs.

The cliffs’ white color comes from the lime content derived from algae. These chalk cliffs rise about 100 meters above the sea and stretch for several kilometers. A path from the town’s port leads to the top of the cliffs, but descending to the beach offers an even more impressive view.

Durham

Located in Northeast England in the valley of the River Wear, Durham’s setting is particularly beautiful with its city center nestled in a bend of the river.

Its cathedral and castle are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cathedral is a famous pilgrimage site and a stunning example of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture, representing a masterpiece of Norman architecture.

The castle, also built by the Normans, was an important fortress for centuries. Its uniqueness lies in its use as a university college since 1840, with student rooms located in the castle tower.

Bath

Located near Bristol, Bath is famous for its name-sake: England’s only hot spring bath.

Popular since Roman times, the bath complex was developed then but gained its current form only a few centuries ago.

The presence of the bath naturally attracted English aristocracy, which is reflected in the city’s architecture. The most beautiful areas are the Royal Crescent and the Circus, built in the Palladian style in the 18th century.
