Torget

The open-air market next to the harbor has been operating since the 13th century and represents the heart of Bergen’s commercial life. The market is primarily famous for freshly caught seafood and fish, offered by local fishermen and merchants directly from boats or wooden stalls.

The stalls feature almost everything Norwegian waters provide: salmon, trout, shrimp, crabs, shellfish, and the famous Norwegian king crab. Visitors can not only purchase but also consume freshly prepared fish dishes on-site, such as salmon sandwiches or soups made from local catches.

The market today specializes not only in seafood: fruits, local vegetables, handcrafted products, and souvenirs are also available at the stalls. Torget is open year-round, but it’s particularly lively in summer when crowds of tourists visit this traditional Norwegian market experience.

Hanseatisk Museum

The museum is housed in one of Bryggen’s best-preserved original buildings and provides an authentic picture of how Hanseatic merchants lived and worked in the 18th century. The building was constructed in 1704 and has remained nearly in its original state, complete with furnishings and tools.

The exhibition showcases the merchants’ daily life, working conditions, living spaces, and warehouses where dried fish and other goods were stored. Visitors can view the original wooden furnishings, work tools, and personal items that help understand the Hanseatic trading system.

Particularly interesting are the details about the strict living conditions of young apprentices: they lived in unheated rooms in winter, the building operated according to a strict hierarchy, and they had to complete years-long training periods. The museum is an excellent starting point for learning about Bryggen’s history before exploring the rest of the quarter.

Bergenhus Fortress

One of Scandinavia’s oldest and best-preserved fortifications, built in the mid-13th century, has been guarding the entrance to Bergen’s harbor for over 700 years. The fortress was strategically important in the Middle Ages when Bergen was Norway’s most important city and the center of royal power.

The fortress complex’s most significant building is Håkonshallen, completed in 1261 during King Håkon’s reign. This monumental hall was the venue for royal celebrations, banquets, and important state affairs, and still hosts cultural events today.

The fortress’s other outstanding structure is Rosenkrantz Tower, erected in the 16th century on the site of the original medieval defense tower. The tower combines architectural styles from different eras and now functions as a museum where visitors can learn about Bergen’s military history and defense system. Ulriken Mountain Viewpoint

Bergen’s highest mountain stands 643 meters tall and offers a stunning 360-degree panorama of the city, fjords, and surrounding mountain range. Visitors can reach the summit via the Ulriken643 cable car, which covers the journey from the valley to the peak in just 7 minutes.

At the mountain top, there’s a modern viewing building with a restaurant where visitors can enjoy Norwegian specialties while taking in the breathtaking views. On clear days, visibility extends up to 90 kilometers, and the view is even more beautiful than from Fløyen.

Ulriken is an excellent starting point for hiking: several marked tourist trails begin from the summit, the most popular being the Vidden trail, which connects Ulriken to Fløyen along an approximately 20-kilometer scenic mountain route. The mountain also offers winter sports opportunities, and in summer, concerts and cultural events are held at the summit.

Mariakirken (St. Mary’s Church)

Bergen’s oldest building and the city’s most important medieval sacred monument, built in the 12th century in Romanesque style. The church was the central religious site for Bergen’s medieval German merchant community and was used by German merchants for their worship services during the Hanseatic period.

The building’s exterior is simple yet monumental, with massive stone walls and two characteristic towers that have become part of Bergen’s skyline. The church interior is particularly rich: decorated with a baroque-style altar, several medieval frescoes, and a magnificent pulpit from the 17th century.

The church bells are of special value: the largest among them dates from 1697 and still rings on special occasions. Thanks to excellent acoustics, organ and choir concerts are particularly popular here.

Damsgård Manor

This 18th-century rococo-style wooden building is Bergen’s only surviving country manor, built around 1770 as a wealthy merchant’s summer residence. The building is located a few kilometers from Bergen’s city center in a quiet area and is considered one of Norway’s most beautiful rococo architectural ensembles.

The manor’s uniqueness lies in its original interior furnishings, which have remained almost unchanged: ornately painted walls, stucco decorations, magnificent chandeliers, and period furniture make it special. Beside the main building are the English garden and orchard, restored according to original plans.

The building complex operates as a museum in summer, and various rooms can be viewed on guided tours, including the reception hall, music room, and living quarters. Damsgård Manor provides insight into the 18th-century Norwegian elite’s lifestyle and nicely complements learning about the city’s medieval trading history around Bryggen.

KODE Art Museums

Bergen’s largest museum complex consists of four separate buildings (KODE 1-4) located at different points in the city, but all in the center, close to each other. This is one of Norway’s largest and most significant art collections.

KODE’s exhibitions include masterpieces from the golden age of Norwegian painting, including several paintings by Edvard Munch, as well as numerous works by other Scandinavian artists from romanticism to modernism. The collection’s strength is 19th and 20th-century Norwegian art, but contemporary art and international works can also be found here.

The KODE 4 building houses the Rasmus Meyer Collection, which is particularly valuable: it preserves several iconic works by Edvard Munch, as well as outstanding pieces of Norwegian national romanticism. KODE 3 houses industrial art and design collections, while KODE 1 and 2 specialize in contemporary art and temporary exhibitions. The museum regularly organizes concerts and cultural programs as well.

Gamle Bergen Museum

This open-air museum evokes the atmosphere of 18th-19th century Bergen with nearly 50 original wooden buildings transported from various locations and assembled into an authentic street and neighborhood. Among the buildings are residential houses, shops, craft workshops, and public buildings.

The museum’s purpose is to show how Bergen’s residents from different social classes lived in the past century: visible are both the wealthy merchant’s magnificent home and the simpler houses of working-class neighborhoods. Each building is furnished with original furniture, work tools, and everyday objects.

In summer, costumed guides bring the past to life, demonstrating period crafts and daily life. The museum grounds also feature a cozy café offering traditional Norwegian pastries. It’s particularly popular with families because it presents history in an interactive and experiential way.

Fantoft Stave Church

A replica of an original medieval stave church from the 12th century, one of Bergen’s most spectacular sacred structures. The original church was transported from Fortun village to Bergen in 1883, where it stood for over a century until it was completely destroyed by arson in 1992.

The church was reconstructed by 1997 based on surviving plans and photographs and is now viewable again in southern Bergen, in a forested area. The dark-colored, multi-level wooden structure is adorned with characteristic Viking ornaments and dragon-head decorations that evoke pre-Christian Scandinavian motifs.

Stave churches are Norway’s unique architectural heritage, and although only a few dozen remain throughout the country, several can be viewed near Bergen. The Fantoft setting is also special: the church situated in the forest exudes a peaceful, meditative atmosphere and is a popular destination for photographers.

Troldhaugen (Grieg Villa and Museum)

The home and composing location of Edvard Grieg, Norway’s most famous composer, from 1885 until his death in 1907. The villa is located near Bergen in beautiful natural surroundings on the shore of Lake Nordås and now functions as a museum, showcasing the composer’s life and work.

The house is furnished with original furniture, personal items, and Grieg’s piano, allowing visitors insight into the artist’s daily life. In the garden stands Grieg’s separate composing cabin where he wrote his most famous works and from which there’s a stunning view of the lake.

A modern concert hall also operates on the Troldhaugen grounds, seating 200 with excellent acoustics. Concerts are regularly held here in summer, featuring Grieg’s music alongside other classical works. The composer and his wife’s grave is also located here, in a rock cave above the lake.

Aquarium

Opened as Norway’s largest and one of its oldest public aquariums in 1960, it has been continuously expanding and modernizing since. The aquarium presents nine different areas, from tropical marine life to Arctic species.

The exhibition’s main attraction is the presentation of Norwegian fjords and coastal waters’ wildlife: seals, penguins, various fish species, and a huge aquarium where sharks and rays swim can be seen here. The tropical section features coral reefs, exotic fish, and sea turtles.

The feedings are particularly popular, when caretakers provide explanations about the animals’ lifestyles and special characteristics. The aquarium’s outdoor pools allow visitors to observe seals and penguins up close in conditions similar to their natural environment.

Gamlehaugen

This estate built at the beginning of the 20th century is one of Bergen’s most spectacular buildings, now serving as the Norwegian royal family’s Bergen residence. The castle, built between 1900 and 1902, was originally the home of Christian Michelsen, shipping magnate and later Norwegian Prime Minister.

The building was constructed in Scottish baronial style, with elegant towers, an evergreen garden, and stunning views of the Nordås fjord. In 1927, the Norwegian state purchased it, and since then the royal family has used it when visiting Bergen on official occasions.

Gamlehaugen’s park and surrounding areas are open to the public in summer and are a popular walking area among locals. Although the castle itself can only be visited on special occasions, the building’s exterior and manicured park are worth viewing. VilVite (Bergen Science Center)

This modern interactive science museum and science center is particularly recommended for families with children, featuring over 75 exhibitions. The center’s goal is to present natural sciences, technology, and human body functions in a playful way.

Among the exhibitions is a giant Archimedes screw, energy production demonstrations, optical illusions, climatology experiments, and a separate section on Norway’s oil and gas industry. Visitors can actively participate in experiments, try out various devices, and understand scientific principles.

VilVite’s uniqueness lies in the variety of permanent and temporary exhibitions: topics are regularly updated and expanded with new interactive elements. The center also features a large-format planetarium where scientific films and presentations are shown. Bergen weather: when Is the best time to visit?

Bergen is one of the rainiest cities in Europe, with an average of 2250 millimeters of precipitation annually, due to the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean and its geographical location surrounded by mountains. The city’s climate is oceanic, with relatively mild winters and cool summers.

Spring (March–May):

Spring is one of Bergen’s most variable seasons, when temperatures gradually rise to between 5-15 degrees Celsius. By late April and May, the city comes to life, days become longer, and nature begins to bloom. Precipitation remains frequent, but the number of sunny hours increases.

Summer (June–August):

The summer months represent the most pleasant period for Bergen, when temperatures range around 15-20 degrees Celsius, rarely rising above 25 degrees. This season is also relatively the driest, although rain should still be expected. The white nights period is around June, when the sun sets for only a few hours.

Autumn (September–November):

Autumn is a cooler and wetter period, with temperatures gradually dropping below 10 degrees. September can still be pleasant, but October and November typically bring windy, rainy weather. However, the autumn colors and foggy, romantic atmosphere can provide a special experience.

Winter (December–February):

Akershus Fortress

One of Norway’s most significant historical monuments that protected the capital for centuries.

The fortress, originally built in the 13th century, was erected by King Håkon IV to defend the city. It has been rebuilt and expanded countless times over the years, reaching its current form in the 17th-18th centuries. The fortress wasn’t just a military installation but also served as a royal residence during the Middle Ages.

Within the fortress walls is the Norwegian Resistance Museum, which presents the period of the Second World War, with special emphasis on the Norwegian resistance movement. Visitors can explore the old prison dungeons, royal halls, and bastions while enjoying an unparalleled view of the Oslo Fjord.

Royal Palace and Park

The official residence of the Norwegian royal family in the heart of Oslo, an impressive neoclassical style building.

The palace was built in the first half of the 19th century after Norway separated from Denmark. Today it serves as the official residence of King Harald V and Queen Sonja, and the royal family hosts important state events here.

During the summer months, several rooms of the palace can be visited with a guide, including the impressive Banquet Hall, the Council Chamber, and parts of the royal apartments. During the visit, we can gain insight into the life of the Norwegian royal family and the history of the monarchy.

City Hall (Oslo Rådhus)

Oslo’s iconic building serves as the political center of the Norwegian capital and also as the venue for the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony.

The monumental brick building was built between 1931 and 1950, and its distinctive twin towers are defining elements of the city’s silhouette. The interior spaces are exceptionally richly decorated: the walls are covered with huge frescoes and paintings depicting Norway’s history, folk culture, and everyday life.

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in the main hall every year on December 10, which underlines the international significance of the building. Karl Johans Gate

Oslo’s main street connects the city’s two most important points, the Royal Palace and Oslo Central Station.

The street was named after King Charles XIV John of Sweden and Norway, who played a significant role in shaping modern Oslo. They began developing it in the early 19th century, and it gradually became the city’s representative main street. Today, Oslo’s most important public buildings are located along the road, including the University, the Parliament (Storting) building, and the National Theatre.

Vigeland Sculpture Park

The world’s largest sculpture park created by a single artist, showcasing more than 200 works by Gustav Vigeland.

Located in Frogner Park, the sculpture park is one of Oslo’s most visited tourist attractions. Vigeland worked on the grandiose creation between 1924 and 1943, depicting different stages and relationships of human life. The central axis of the park is an 850-meter-long promenade, with bronze and granite sculptures symmetrically arranged.

The central element of the park is the 17-meter-high Monolith Column, carved from a single granite block, depicting 121 intertwined human figures. This impressive creation symbolizes the cycle of life from birth to death.

Perhaps the park’s most iconic sculpture is the Sinnataggen (Angry Boy), depicting a stomping child. The bridge leading from the main entrance of the park towards the central square is decorated with 58 bronze sculptures, showing a wide range of human relationships, from loving embraces to dramatic conflicts.

Ekebergparken Sculpture Park

The sculpture park on Ekeberg Hill opened to the public in 2013 and has since become one of the city’s most exciting cultural venues.

The 25-hectare park features works by internationally recognized artists, including Salvador Dalí, Louise Bourgeois, Marina Abramović, and James Turrell.

Opera House

One of Oslo’s boldest and most modern architectural masterpieces, and among the world’s leading contemporary opera houses.

The building, opened in 2008, was designed by Snøhetta architecture firm and immediately gained international recognition for its special design reminiscent of an iceberg. The Opera House’s roof, covered with white Carrara marble, is actually a spacious public area that visitors can walk on, offering a wonderful view of the Oslo Fjord.

Aker Brygge

One of Oslo’s most attractive waterfront districts is a blend of historical industrial past and modern urban life.

The area, once operating as a shipyard, was transformed into a diverse, multifunctional urban district in the 1980s. Today it’s one of the liveliest parts of the city, housing shops, offices, apartments, restaurants, and entertainment venues.

Boat services to the islands of the Oslo Fjord depart from the harbor, and the Tjuvholmen art district is also located here. It’s especially full of life on summer evenings when locals and tourists enjoy the long, bright nights and vibrant atmosphere.

Oslo Botanical Garden

The garden is home to more than 5,500 plant species and is an important research and conservation site for Norwegian biodiversity.

It was founded in 1814 and is now part of the Natural History Museum of the University of Oslo. The 43-hectare area is divided into various thematic gardens showcasing the flora of different regions of the world, with special emphasis on northern flora. A specialty of the garden is the Arctic-Alpine Botanical Garden, which presents rare plants from the Arctic Circle and high mountains.

One of its most important parts is the Victoria House, where tropical aquatic plants, including the giant Victoria water lily, can be seen. The garden also features the Scent Garden, specifically designed for the visually impaired, where plants can be discovered through scents and touch.

Holmenkollen Ski Jump and Museum

An international symbol of winter sports with more than 100 years of history.

The ski jump located on Holmenkollen Hill is an iconic element of Oslo’s panorama. The first jump was built in 1892, and it has been rebuilt and modernized countless times since then. The current futuristic design jump was built for the 2011 Ski World Championships, and with its 134-meter critical point, it is one of the world’s most modern such facilities. The steel and concrete structure of the jump is a bold architectural solution.

The world’s oldest ski museum is located in the tower of the ski jump, which also showcases more than 4,000-year-old ski remains. Its interactive exhibitions present the history of skiing and ski sports, as well as the story of Norwegian expeditions and polar explorers, including Roald Amundsen. The jump’s lookout offers a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of Oslo and the Oslo Fjord.

Visitors can try out what it might feel like to ski down the steep jump on a ski simulator and experience the excitement of ski jumping through virtual reality. Cross-country ski tracks and hiking trails are built in the area, attracting nature lovers in both winter and summer. National Museum

Norway’s largest art museum presents a comprehensive collection of Norwegian and international art from ancient times to the present day.

The new building, opened in 2022, is located in the center of Oslo, close to the City Hall and the Aker Brygge district. The monumental, modern building is a remarkable architectural creation in itself. The museum unites the collections of the former National Gallery, Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, and Architecture Museum, creating Norway’s treasure trove of culture.

The museum’s most famous treasure is Edvard Munch’s painting „The Scream” which is among the world’s most iconic artworks. In addition, visitors can view works by painters of Norwegian National Romanticism (J.C. Dahl, Adolph Tidemand, Hans Gude), as well as international masters such as Picasso, Matisse, Van Gogh, and Monet. A special part is the Light Hall, a huge, light-filled gallery on the top of the building that hosts temporary exhibitions.

Viking Ship Museum

One of the most unique museums commemorates the Vikings’ impressive seafaring abilities and rich culture.

The museum, located on the Bygdøy Peninsula, features 9th-century Viking ships excavated from burial sites around the Oslo Fjord. The most remarkable of these is the Oseberg ship, built in 834 and used as a burial ship for a noble Viking woman. The perfectly preserved hull and the rich grave goods found inside, including carved sleds, beds, clothes, and everyday items, provide insight into the rituals of life and death in the Viking Age.

The museum also displays the Gokstad ship, which was the largest naval warship of the era, and the remains of the Tune ship. The exhibition is complemented by interactive elements showing the shipbuilding techniques, navigation methods, and trade routes of the Vikings.

A special feature of the museum is the 360-degree panoramic film that virtually revives the Viking Age and guides visitors through the dangerous and exciting journeys of Viking sailors on the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

Munch Museum

The museum dedicated to the world-famous Norwegian expressionist painter Edvard Munch houses the largest collection of the artist’s legacy.

The new Munch Museum opened its doors in 2021 in the Bjørvika district, not far from the Opera House. The 13-story building with bold lines was designed by Spanish architect Juan Herreros and is recognizable from a distance by its slanted roof section.

The collection contains more than 26,000 works, including paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, and sculptures that Munch left to the city. Visitors can follow the artist’s development, see his iconic works such as „Madonna”, „The Sick Child” and several versions of „The Scream”.

Fram Museum

This unique museum commemorates the history of Norwegian polar expeditions, centered around the world’s strongest polar research vessel, the legendary Fram.

The main attraction of the museum located on the Bygdøy Peninsula is the Fram ship, built in 1892 specifically for navigation among polar ice. The ship participated in three famous expeditions: Fridtjof Nansen’s Arctic journey between 1893-1896, Otto Sverdrup’s West Greenland expedition between 1898-1902, and Roald Amundsen’s South Pole expedition between 1910-1912, during which they were the first to reach the South Pole.

The uniqueness of the museum is that visitors can not only admire the ship from the outside but also step onto the deck and explore the narrow cabins, the captain’s cabin, the engine room, and the dining room where the brave polar explorers lived during their long expeditions.

Its interactive exhibitions present the difficulties of polar exploration, extreme climatic conditions, and techniques necessary for survival. The Gjøa Hall displays the first ship to navigate the Northwest Passage, further enriching the collection presenting the history of Norwegian polar expeditions.

Oslo has a four-season continental climate that includes warm summers and cold, snowy winters.

Spring (March-May):

Spring gradually warms up, and the days get longer. The average temperature ranges between 3-15°C, and the amount of precipitation is moderate. Trees start to turn green and plants begin to bloom from the end of April, making the city’s parks particularly beautiful. Pleasant weather can be expected from mid-May, and the number of tourists also gradually increases.

Summer (June-August):

Summer in Oslo is pleasant and mild, rarely too hot. The average temperature ranges between 15-25°C, although heat waves above 30°C can occur. During the summer months, the days are extremely long; in June and July, it barely gets dark, allowing sightseeing 24 hours a day. The „white nights” give the city a special atmosphere.

Autumn (September-November):

Autumn is gorgeous in Oslo as the foliage in the city’s parks and surrounding forests turns red, yellow, and gold. The average temperature gradually decreases, ranging between 0-15°C. Pleasant, summery weather is still common in early September, while by the end of November, winter cold may set in.

Winter in Oslo is cold and snowy, with average temperatures between -5 and 0°C, but periods of frost below -15°C can occur. Snowfall is regular, and the snow cover usually remains from December to March. Days in winter are extremely short; the light period is only 6 hours in December and January.

Best time to travel

The most ideal period for visiting Oslo is the summer months from late May to mid-August, when the weather is pleasant, the days are long, and the city shines in its full splendor. As an alternative, mid-September is also an excellent choice, when the weather is still pleasant, the autumn colors are beautiful, and there are fewer tourists. The winter months are primarily attractive for fans of winter sports and those hunting for the Northern Lights.

Sweden’s largest city is located on the central southeastern coast of the Scandinavian Peninsula, where the excess water of Lake Mälaren – Sweden’s third-largest freshwater lake – flows into the Baltic Sea. The central parts of the city lie on fourteen small islands, which are collectively called the Stockholm archipelago.

City Hall (Stadshuset)

The administrative center of Stockholm, but also serves as a tourist attraction.

This iconic building was designed by Swedish architect Ragnar Östberg and was inaugurated in 1923. It was built in the Scandinavian national romantic style, which combines traditional Swedish architectural elements with modern influences. The brick building’s 106-meter-high tower is one of the city’s symbols, with the golden three crowns (Tre Kronor) at its top, the Swedish national symbol.

Its famous ceremonial halls include the Blue Hall (Blå hallen) and the Golden Hall (Gyllene salen). The Blue Hall is where the Nobel Prize banquet is held annually, while the Golden Hall’s famous mosaics depict significant events and figures from Swedish history.

Birger Jarl’s Cenotaph

This memorial is located at the base of one of the City Hall’s towers, erected in honor of Birger Jarl, the 13th-century Swedish statesman.

Birger Jarl was one of the most significant figures of the Swedish Middle Ages. He worked on political and legal reforms in Sweden and strengthened the Swedish kingdom. Although historians debate whether he was truly the founder of Stockholm, tradition considers him the creator of the city.

The sarcophagus is only a symbolic tomb and does not contain Birger Jarl’s remains. Nevertheless, it’s an important attraction in the city.

Riksdag

Sweden’s parliament is located on Helgeandsholmen island, near the Old Town.

The original building was constructed at the turn of the 20th century in neoclassical and baroque styles. It was renovated and expanded in the 1980s. Its plenary chamber is the scene of parliamentary sessions, which is open to the public.

Kungsträdgården

One of Stockholm’s most popular and important parks.

It was originally the private garden of Swedish kings, later becoming a public park. Its most famous attraction is the row of cherry trees, which are particularly beautiful in spring during blossom time. There are also several statues commemorating important figures in Swedish history.

Drottninggatan

Stockholm’s famous pedestrian street stretches from the Riksbron bridge all the way north to Observatorielunden park.

Its name means Queen Street. It was named in the 17th century after Queen Christina, during whose reign the street was designed as part of royal urban development. There are many shops, stores, restaurants, and cafes here.

Old Town (Gamla Stan)

Stockholm’s historical center is one of the best-preserved medieval city districts in Europe.

The neighborhood, which developed in the 13th century, was originally known as Stadsholmen and was Stockholm’s primary commercial and administrative center for centuries. The medieval architectural elements and narrow, labyrinthine streets still convey the atmosphere of that time.

There are many notable buildings here, some of which I’ll mention below.

Stockholm Palace (Kungliga Slottet)

The official residence of the Swedish king is one of Sweden’s most important historical and cultural buildings. The changing of the guard can be seen every day in a ceremonial setting.

The original royal castle was built in the 13th century and was called Tre Kronor Castle. This was destroyed in a fire in 1697, and the current one was built in its place. The palace is a huge, 600-room building, which is one of the largest royal residences in Europe. It’s not only the official residence of the royal family but also houses several important institutions and museums.

The palace’s representative halls and salons are impressive examples of baroque interior design. One of the most famous rooms is the throne room, where royal ceremonies such as coronations and receptions take place. The royal throne stands at its center.

Another attraction is the Royal Treasury, where the royal crown jewels and other valuable objects can be viewed. The crown, the royal scepter, and the royal robe stand out among these.

Storkyrkan

Stockholm’s oldest church, officially called St. Nicholas Cathedral, stands in the center of the Old Town. It has been the site of Swedish coronation ceremonies and royal weddings for centuries.

According to legend, Birger Jarl himself, the founder of Stockholm, ordered its construction. It was significantly remodeled in the 15th century, when it became Gothic in style. The church’s tower stands out in Stockholm’s skyline and is visible from afar.

Its most famous attraction is the statue of St. George and the Dragon, created by German sculptor Bernt Notke in the 1480s. The statue, made of wood and horn, depicts St. George’s heroic battle against the dragon and has become one of the symbols of Swedish history.

Riddarholmskyrkan

One of Stockholm’s most significant historical churches is located on Riddarholmen island, next to the Old Town.

It was originally built at the end of the 13th century as a Franciscan monastery. At the beginning of the 16th century, the monastery was dissolved. From then on, it became the burial place of the Swedish royal family. It’s not an active church, mainly visited as a memorial.

Most Swedish rulers from the 1600s until the 20th century were buried here. The church contains the burial sites of prominent figures, including Gustav II Adolf, Charles XII, and Gustav V.

Skansen

The world’s first open-air museum and zoo is located on Djurgården island.

Its founder, Artur Hazelius, established the museum with the aim of preserving Swedish rural life, architectural and cultural traditions, which were rapidly changing at the end of the 19th century due to industrialization. Hazelius aimed to showcase folk architecture, old crafts, and traditional Swedish way of life.

Its most important elements are the historical buildings that come from various regions of Sweden. There are more than 150 original buildings from different eras on the museum grounds, which were dismantled, transported here, and rebuilt. One of the most beautiful buildings is a small 18th-century wooden church that originally came from Seglora village. The church is a characteristic example of religious life in the Swedish countryside.

Skansen’s zoo showcases animals living in the Scandinavian wilderness, as well as some domestic animals that have been part of Swedish farming for centuries. Brown bears, wolves, moose, lynx, and otters can be seen. There’s also an aquarium where exotic fish, reptiles, snakes, and other animals can be observed.

Södermalm

One of Stockholm’s largest districts, famous for its bohemian atmosphere and cultural life.

Once the home of the poorer working class, it was considered the city’s industrial center in the 17-18th centuries. The oldest parts of the district still retain the characteristic atmosphere of the old working-class neighborhoods, especially in the form of old wooden houses and cobblestone streets.

Here you can find the city’s trendiest cafes, boutiques, and galleries. The center of this is the SoFo neighborhood. Medborgarplatsen and its surroundings are particularly lively in terms of nightlife, with bars, clubs, and live music venues awaiting visitors.

Sofia Church

The Evangelical church in the Södermalm district is named after Queen Sofia, wife of King Oscar II.

The church was built with red brick, which was a typical material in Scandinavian neo-Gothic architecture. Its most spectacular part is the large central tower that towers over the church. With its distinctive shape and height, it’s visible from afar.

As it stands on one of Stockholm’s highest points, Sofia Hill, there’s a fantastic view of Södermalm and the rest of the city.

Mariaberget

This is a small hill in the northern part of Södermalm, offering a great view of the waterfront and the city.

There are a few tables and benches along the short promenade, so we can enjoy the wonderful view while resting.

Skyview

One of Stockholm’s most spectacular and modern tourist attractions, located at the Globen Arena, officially called Avicii Arena. This is the world’s largest spherical building.

The SkyView itself is a glass-walled gondola-like cabin system. It consists of two cabins that move on a rail system on the outside of the building. Visitors can board the cabins and slowly ascend to the top of the Globen, which is about 130 meters above sea level.

The cabins are completely transparent, so you can enjoy the 360-degree view of the city throughout the journey. From the top, you can see Stockholm’s city center, the islands, the harbor, and distant landscapes.

Hagaparken

One of Stockholm’s largest and most famous parks, located in the northern part of the city on the shore of Lake Brunnsviken.

The park is famous for its English garden-style landscaping. It’s crisscrossed by several kilometers of walking paths that pass through the lakeshore and wooded areas. Boating and rowing opportunities are also available at Lake Brunnsviken.

The park is home to Haga Palace (Haga slott), which is currently the home of the Swedish royal family. The palace was originally built for King Gustav XVI Adolf, but it still functions as an official royal residence, so it’s not open to visitors.

The Butterfly House is worth mentioning, where you can admire various exotic butterflies. There’s also a tropicarium that showcases tropical flora and fauna.

Karlberg Palace

The palace located in the northwestern part of the city, on the banks of the Karlberg Canal, is a significant historical site.

The 17th-century building also served as a residence for King Charles X Gustav of Sweden, and several members of the Swedish royal family lived here. From 1792, it became the center of the Swedish Royal Naval Academy, which still operates here to this day. It’s one of the oldest operating military academies in the world.

The palace is surrounded by a beautiful, huge park known as Karlbergs slottspark. The park features walking paths, statues, and waterfront areas, making it popular among locals as well.

Metro stations

The Stockholm metro network is not only considered a means of transport but also one of the world’s longest art galleries.

There are artworks, sculptures, paintings, and installations at more than 100 stations of the Tunnelbana, which in many cases are related to nature or Swedish culture.

The T-Centralen station is considered the most beautiful station, especially where rock walls decorated with blue and white patterns can be found. Other notable stations include Kungsträdgården and Stadion stations.

In early May, I found a cheap ticket: Tuesday noon outbound with Ryanair, Wednesday night return with Wizz Air. The two tickets cost 32 €, which is really good. The trip was on May 28-29.

From the airport to the city

The airport is located south of the downtown area, with both metro and bus connections. Obviously, the metro is the fastest, reaching the city in 15 minutes. During the day, it runs every 6 minutes, so you can get into the city very quickly. Just follow the metro sign from the arrival hall. Tickets or passes can be purchased on-site from vending machines.

Public transportation

Since I use public transportation a lot, I bought a day pass here too. The easiest way is to buy it on your mobile: download the DOT Billetter app, and after a quick registration, you can purchase tickets or day passes.

I bought a two-day pass (valid for 48 hours, cost about 20 €), which is called the City Pass menu. You need to select City Pass Small, which covers the downtown area and the airport zone. There are 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120-hour passes available. This is valid for buses, metro, and regional trains.

By the way, you’ll notice that there are many cyclists. This is no surprise, as most roads have separate bike lanes on both sides. I felt like there were far more cyclists than car drivers.

Tuesday afternoon

I dropped my bag at the accommodation and walked to Kastellet along the riverbank. The walk there is very atmospheric, with a great view of the opposite side. The modern Opera building stands out there.

I also stopped by Amalienborg Palace and Frederiks Kirke. The church itself is a huge dome, which we can also admire from the inside. It’s open until 5 PM.

Kastellet is a former fortress on a large area that has been preserved in very good condition. The buildings inside have also been nicely renovated. It’s worth walking along the elevated path on its edge.

There are three major attractions around the fortress: St. Alban’s Church, Gefion Fountain, and The Little Mermaid statue. The latter is the most famous, with many people on the shore around it. But it really is a small statue. I can safely say its fame is much greater than what it offers.

After that, I walked along the main street, Strøget. At its western end is the City Hall, which unfortunately is under renovation, and the area in front of it was closed off. So I only saw from the side that it’s indeed a wonderful building. On the right side of the building stands a statue of the famous writer, Hans Christian Andersen.

Opposite the City Hall is perhaps the world’s most famous downtown amusement park, Tivoli. It’s an interesting sight, as if there were a serious amusement park next to Deák Square in Budapest…

Since Copenhagen is quite far north, it stays light until late in May. It only started to get really dark after 10 PM. I spent the evening at Nyhavn. This few hundred meter long canal-side area is full of restaurants. It’s a very atmospheric place, and even more beautiful when lit up. I had a similar feeling to the Naviglio in Milan.

Wednesday

I went to the central station and left my bag in the luggage storage there. There are three types of lockers, but even the smallest is quite large. It cost 70 kroner (about 9 €) for 24 hours. After closing the door, you get a receipt, which you need to hold up to the QR code reader when opening and pay the fee.

The day started with sunshine, but they predicted cloudy weather after 10-11 AM, and rain in the late afternoon. So I walked around in good weather, seeing the remaining sights: Christiansborg Palace, Nikolaj Kunsthal, Vor Frue Kirke.

After a coffee, around 10:30, I went to the Rundetaarn lookout, which is in the center. In the Round Tower building, you have to walk up a spiral corridor, then a narrow staircase at the top. Here, traffic lights help with going up and down. 🙂

From the lookout, you can see Copenhagen very well. Not only the downtown area is visible, but in the distance, you can see the Øresund Bridge between Denmark and Sweden. The entrance fee is 40 kroner, so around 5 €. It’s definitely worth it for this price.

Then I visited the garden next to the nearby Rosenborg Palace. Together, it was a beautiful sight, and I lingered on a bench for a while. I didn’t go into the palace, but you could see that many people were visiting it.

I took the metro to the Christianshavn district, which is the bohemian part of the city. This is symbolized by the Christiania courtyard, where you can find wall graffiti and small shops. The smell of weed was quite noticeable in the air here. 🙂

It’s worth seeing Vor Frelsers Kirke both from the outside and inside. The church’s distinctive feature is the external spiral staircase, which makes it special.

I walked along the canal at the edge of the district towards Nyhavn, which you reach via two bridges. The longer bridge (Inderhavnsbroen) is movable: if a larger ship comes, they stop pedestrian and bike traffic, and part of the bridge opens on rollers. I managed to catch it, and the whole maneuver takes just a few minutes.

There were still two main attractions left. The David Collection Museum is free, so I visited there. It’s set up on four floors, with its most famous part being the Islamic exhibition. But it covers many other arts as well, and even moving quickly, you can easily spend an hour there.

The nearby Nyboder area consists of a few streets. This is where sailors used to live, and the neighborhood has remained original to this day. People still live in the bright, vivid yellow row houses, of course, adapted to modern times.

It started to drizzle, and I still had time, so I chose a bus to ride around the city a bit (I like to wander in the suburban areas too, that’s where you can really get to know a city). Then around 6 PM, I went back to the station for my bag.

Since my flight was at 9:55 PM, I had plenty of time. So I took the 5C bus to the airport, which is mostly used by locals to get to the suburbs.

Summary

Since I hadn’t been to Scandinavian lands before, Copenhagen was a good choice. It’s a pleasant place for a quick trip.

In terms of prices, it’s obviously more expensive than in Hungary, especially noticeable in services. In a café, a long coffee and a cinnamon pastry cost 11 €. However, in shops, goods are not much more expensive. For example, a can of cola was about 0.7 € (true, not the two most famous brands, but there wasn’t much difference in taste).

And the title is apt: a short excursion can be enough. The sights are quite close to each other, the city is not big. So everything can easily fit into two days. But it’s definitely worth traveling here!

Denmark’s capital and the most populous city in Scandinavia, the settlement first mentioned in the 11th century became the capital of Denmark in the early 15th century. During the reign of Christian IV in the 17th century, it developed into a significant regional center.

Copenhagen attractions

Amalienborg Palace

The complex is the winter residence of the Danish royal family. Over the centuries, numerous kings and their families have resided in the four palaces.

It consists of four identical, classical facade and internally rococo-style palaces surrounding an octagonal square (Amalienborg Slotsplads), with the equestrian statue of Amalienborg’s founder, King Frederick V, at its center.

The four parts of the complex are: Christian IX’s Palace, Christian VII’s Palace, Christian VIII’s Palace, and Frederick VIII’s Palace.

Frederik’s Church

Better known as the Marble Church, it is one of Copenhagen’s most iconic buildings.

In the 18th century, King Frederick V decided to build a magnificent church to glorify his reign. The construction began in 1749 but was only completed more than 150 years later, in 1894. Made of fine marble, which its name also reflects.

Known as a masterpiece of Danish classicism, the building is dominated by a massive dome, which is one of the city’s highest points and recognizable from afar. Its interior is characterized by marble and gold decorations.

The Citadel (Kastellet)

One of the best-preserved fortifications in Northern Europe, located by the seaside, close to the city center.

Its construction was started by King Christian IV in 1626, continued by his second-born son and successor, Frederick III. The fortress played a role in defending the city against the English in the Battle of Copenhagen in 1807.

Its layout is star-shaped. Its five bastions are named: King’s Bastion (Kongens Bastion), Queen’s Bastion (Dronningens Bastion), Count’s Bastion (Grevens Bastion), Princess’s Bastion (Prinsessens Bastion), and Prince’s Bastion (Prinsens Bastion). The fortress has its own church and windmill.

Gefion Fountain

Located next to the fortress, it’s the city’s most beautiful fountain.

The Danish mythological goddess Gefion stands in a chariot pulled by four massive oxen. According to legend, these were her sons, whom she turned into oxen; they plowed the land to create the island of Zealand, where Copenhagen is located today. 🙂

Along with the fortress, it’s a great photo spot.

Rosenborg Castle

This magnificent Renaissance building represents an important piece of Denmark’s history and culture.

Ordered by King Christian IV in 1606 as a summer residence, the construction was completed in 1633. Over the years, the castle underwent numerous modifications and expansions but always retained its original Renaissance style. Its exterior is characterized by red brick walls and green copper roofs, along with decorative windows and towers.

The building houses portraits of royal family members and masterpieces of contemporary art. Among the most beautiful rooms are the Great Hall, known for its stained glass and ceiling frescoes, and the throne room, where the Danish kings’ coronation thrones are located.

It also houses the Danish coronation regalia, including the crown, scepter, and orb. The treasury contains royal jewels, as well as the Amalienborg silver and the Flora Danica porcelain collection.

Rosenhaven

The Rose Garden is located next to Rosenborg Castle.

Numerous varieties of roses and other flowers can be seen. It is particularly spectacular during the summer months when the roses are in full bloom, and the entire garden is fragrant.

Christiansborg Palace

The palace houses the Danish Parliament, the Prime Minister’s Office, the Supreme Court, and the Royal Reception Rooms.

Before the current one, two palaces stood here. This was built in the early 1900s after the previous palaces were destroyed by fires. The new building was designed by Thorvald Jørgensen in a neo-baroque style.

Some parts are open to the public, like the Parliament visitor center, the Royal Reception Rooms, and the palace tower, which offers one of the best views of the city. All information here!

City Hall (Rådhus)

The center of Copenhagen’s administration, it is also a tourist attraction because of its exterior.

The building was designed by Martin Nyrop and inaugurated in 1905. In designing it, Nyrop applied the style elements of Danish national romanticism, drawing inspiration from medieval Italian city halls, especially the one in Siena. Its distinctive features are its brickwork, towers, and bastions, as well as its intricately detailed decorations.

Its most famous part is one of the world’s most accurate mechanical clocks, the Jens Olsen’s World Clock (Verdensur). This clock not only shows the time but is also capable of accurately following the year, days, astronomical cycles, and other temporal measurements.

Nyhavn

This is a canal and the surrounding buildings ensemble. One of the most well-known parts of Copenhagen, where tourists love to visit.

The old houses, once home to merchants, have been renovated and now host numerous restaurants. The differently colored houses look beautiful along the waterfront. Old ships can also be seen in the harbor.

Strøget

Copenhagen’s shopping street, which is one of the longest pedestrian streets in Europe.

The streetscape is rich in cultural and historical elements. Amagertorv, one of the street’s main areas, is famous for the beautiful Stork Fountain (Storkespringvandet).

Rundetaarn

The Round Tower was built in 1642 by King Christian IV as an observatory to aid the development of science.

The uniqueness of the tower lies in its interior, where instead of stairs, a 7.5 turn spiral ramp leads to the top, making it unique in Europe. This solution originally served to allow access to the top by horseback or carriage, thus facilitating the transport of astronomical instruments.

From its top, there is a magnificent view of the city, offering a 360-degree panorama.

The Little Mermaid Statue

The bronze statue located at Langelinie Pier represents the main character of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, The Little Mermaid.

The statue, erected in 1913, is relatively small, only 1.25 meters high, which often surprises tourists seeing it for the first time. Nonetheless, it’s a must-see.

Opera House

Denmark’s national opera house is among the world’s most modern buildings of its kind.

The building’s width is 90 meters, its length 127 meters, but the roof length reaches 158 meters: extending 32 meters beyond the building in front of the five-story high glass facade. Its total height is 38 meters.

The 1700-seat building was constructed using quality stone and metal materials, including 105,000 gold-smoke plates. The facade is clad in Jurassic limestone from North Germany, while the surrounding public areas and quaysides are covered in Chinese granite. The foyer and the hall are floored with maple wood.

Børsen

One of Copenhagen’s most significant historical buildings, it once housed Denmark’s stock exchange and now serves as the headquarters of the Danish Chamber of Commerce.

The Børsen building is most famous for its iconic spiral tower, formed by the intertwining tails of four dragons, symbolizing elements of Scandinavian mythology and Denmark’s commercial ties with Sweden, Norway, and Finland at the time.

Nyboder

A few streets away from Frederikskirke, you can see a district of yellow houses, which is particularly striking for its color.

This was established during the reign of King Christian IV of Denmark in the early 17th century, originally for the officers and sailors of the Danish navy. This initiative was one of the first state-supported housing construction projects in Europe.

Tivoli

The famous amusement district is one of the world’s oldest amusement parks.

Opened in 1843, the park offered many attractions even then. It not only provides entertainment options but also a chance to explore Danish culture and arts. The park houses the Pantomime Theater, which has been operating since the 19th century and still offers popular performances today.

Its significance is enhanced by the fact that it allegedly inspired Walt Disney for his own projects.

Sweden’s second-largest city, located in Western Sweden on the Kattegat sea coast.

Founded in the 17th century, this port city is a vital cultural and economic hub. Known for its green spaces, modern art, and unique, friendly atmosphere.

One of its most popular attractions is the Liseberg amusement park, one of the largest in Scandinavia. The Gothenburg Art Museum has an impressive collection, including outstanding pieces of Scandinavian art.

Kalmar

The city has a medieval past and is famous for its well-preserved historical buildings and streets, as well as being an important cultural and educational center.

Its most significant attraction is the well-preserved 12th-century Renaissance castle, playing an essential role in Sweden’s history. Today, it serves as a museum where one can learn about Kalmar and the region’s history.

The Öland bridge, a modern symbol of the city, connects Kalmar to Öland island. The bridge, over 6 kilometers long, is a magnificent structure.

Kebnekaise

Sweden’s highest mountain in the Scandinavian range, located in the municipality of Kiruna.

The main mountain has two peaks, with the southern one being higher at 2102 meters, but due to melting ice, the northern peak has become the higher one. A popular hiking destination for its height and the beautiful views it offers.

A tourist hut at the base is where the summit treks begin. The southern peak can be reached via the slightly longer western route without special equipment for those accustomed to mountain hikes.

Gotland

Sweden’s and the Baltic Sea’s largest island, with a coastline approximately 800 km long.

One of the island’s most unique natural phenomena are the raukar, huge limestone pillars, especially in the Langhammars and Digerhuvud areas. These formations have evolved over millennia due to erosion. Another natural attraction is Lummelundagrottan, a vast stalactite cave system.

Its center, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Visby, is a very atmospheric small town with well-preserved city walls, beautiful church ruins, and winding streets.

Halmstad

Located in the south, on the Kattegat sea coast, the city is known for its beach.

Its historical center houses the 17th-century castle, now a venue for cultural events. The Norre Port is the only remaining city gate, evoking the medieval era.

Trolltunga

Turku

Punkaharju

The city located on the shore of the Flensburg Fjord has a history that dates back to the Middle Ages.

Its strategic significance was due to the Øresund, the narrowest point between Denmark and Sweden, being located here. Today, it operates as a museum where we can tour the royal chambers, the great halls, and the deep-lying casemates.

In the city center, the Church of Saint Mary (Sct. Mariæ Kirke) and the Church of Saint Olaf (Sct. Olai Kirke) are particularly noteworthy, both beautiful examples of the Gothic architectural style.

Egeskov Castle

The Renaissance moated castle is one of Denmark’s most well-known and visited historical monuments.

A perfect example of the contemporary fortified castles, and famous for its well-preserved architectural features and beautiful gardens. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it is still inhabited.

The museum inside the building displays old furniture, paintings, and decorative arts items, showcasing the lifestyle of the Danish aristocracy over the past centuries.
