Matenadaran

Sulfur Baths (Abanotubani)

Tbilisi’s most unique and oldest attraction, where the healing power of natural thermal waters has attracted visitors for centuries.

The Abanotubani district is connected to the city’s founding legend. According to tradition, King Vakhtang discovered the hot springs in the 5th century when during a hunt, a wounded falcon fell into the warm water and was healed. „Abano” means bath, which gives the district its name.

The baths were built in a special architectural style: pools are hidden under semicircular roofs, fed by natural sulfur springs. The water temperature varies between 37-47°C and has healing effects on rheumatism, skin diseases, and other health problems. Operating baths still welcome visitors today, where traditional Georgian massage and sulfur bathing can be enjoyed in an authentic environment.

Holy Trinity Cathedral

The 20-meter-tall aluminum statue erected in 1958 depicts the Mother of Georgia, holding wine and a sword in her two hands. The monument created by Georgian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli was unveiled in 1985 on the shore of Tbilisi Lake. The market is located near the Dry Bridge, from which it gets its name. Here they sell everything connected to Georgian culture and history: Soviet-era objects, antique jewelry, traditional handicraft products, old books, and paintings. Among the vendors are many artists and craftspeople who offer their own creations for sale.

The museum is located in Vake Park and presents the traditional architecture of Georgia’s different regions on an area of more than 70 hectares. In the open-air museum, original or carefully reconstructed houses, churches, defensive structures, and economic buildings can be viewed. Each building was erected in its own original environment, giving us an authentic picture of Georgian village life.

Visitors can enter the buildings and view traditional furniture, tools, and household items. At periodic events, traditional craft techniques are demonstrated, and Georgian folk music and dance performances can be seen. Bibi-Heybat Mosque

The central part of the complex is an open courtyard where the eternal fire once burned, surrounded by cell-like rooms where pilgrims and priests lived. Sanskrit and Persian inscriptions carved into the walls testify to the international significance of the place – pilgrims came here from India and what was then Persia. The temple now functions as a museum where visitors can learn about the history and rituals of Zoroastrianism.

Atashgah has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage tentative list since 1998 and is one of Azerbaijan’s most important tourist destinations. Cultural events are often held in the complex, and on special occasions, the eternal fire is relit.

Nobel Heritage Museum

One of Baku’s most interesting cultural institutions commemorates the Nobel brothers’ oil industry activities in Azerbaijan and the local legacy of the Nobel dynasty.

Geghard Monastery

The monastery’s name means „Monastery of the Spear”, referring to the holy spear traditionally kept here that allegedly pierced Christ’s side during the crucifixion. Although the spear is now housed in the Etchmiadzin Treasury, the monastery continues to hold spiritual significance.

Founded in the 4th century during the early years of Christianity, most of the monastery’s current buildings date from the 12th-13th centuries. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that some parts were carved directly into the surrounding rock walls.

Lake Sevan

Khor Virap Monastery

Its name means „deep pit,” referring to the underground prison where, according to legend, Saint Gregory the Illuminator – later the patron saint of Armenia – was held captive for 13 years at the end of the 3rd century. As a result, in 301, Armenia became the first country in the world to officially adopt Christianity.

Its modern development began in the 19th century when the Russians developed it into one of the most important fortress cities in the Caucasus. It became a stronghold of Armenian art, sculpture, and music, and many famous artists were born here.

A tragic event in its history was the 1988 Spitak earthquake, which claimed more than 25,000 lives and destroyed much of the city’s buildings. The city has since undergone a long reconstruction process, but traces of the destruction can still be seen today.

The city is famous for its traditional houses built from black tuff stone. The Fortress District (Kumayri historical district) is particularly interesting, as it contains the most beautiful examples of 18th-19th century Armenian architecture. Among these, the Church of the Holy Savior and Vartanants Square stand out.

Garni Temple

A unique ancient architectural monument in the Caucasus region, located about 30 kilometers east of Yerevan.

The temple is the only surviving pagan temple in Armenia that dates back to pre-Christian times. According to research, it was built during the reign of King Trdat I (Tiridates) in the 1st century and was dedicated to Mihr, the Armenian sun god.

With the advent of Christianity, most pagan sanctuaries were destroyed, but Garni survived this period. This was probably because it was part of a royal summer residence. In 1688, an earthquake severely damaged the building, and it remained in ruins for a long time. Today it can be seen again in its original form.

The temple was built in the classical Greco-Roman style and bears a strong resemblance to ancient Greek peripteros temples. It has 24 Ionic columns decorated with finely carved patterns. From the large terrace, there is a magnificent panorama of the Azat River Valley and the surrounding mountains.

Khndzoresk Cave City

One of Armenia’s most exciting historical sites is set in a natural environment, amid steep cliffs and deep canyons.

People here carved cave dwellings into the soft volcanic rock and lived in them for centuries. By the end of the 19th century, about 15,000 people lived here, making it one of the country’s largest settlements at the time. The village had its own schools, churches, and markets, and residents built traditional stone houses alongside cave dwellings. By the mid-20th century, people gradually abandoned the caves, and a new village was built above the canyon.

One of the most exciting attractions is the 160-meter-long suspension bridge that connects the two sides of the canyon. Several thousand artificially carved caves can be explored at the site, which once served as homes, stables, or storage areas.

Dilijan National Park

Also known as the „Armenian Switzerland„, this nature reserve welcomes visitors with rich forests, crystal-clear lakes, and historical monasteries.

One of its most popular natural attractions is Lake Parz, a picturesque alpine lake. The park is covered with oak, beech, pine, and maple forests that are home to more than 1,000 plant species. It also boasts a rich fauna, with rare species such as the Armenian mouflon and brown bear.

Haghartsin Monastery

Located in Dilijan National Park, this monastery is one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in Armenia.

Its foundation dates back to the 10th century, but it flourished in the 12th-13th centuries when it was an important religious and cultural center of the Armenian Bagratid kingdom. Its name means „dancing eagles” which, according to legend, refers to eagles flying into the sky as if celebrating when one of the church domes was consecrated.

The complex consists of several churches and auxiliary buildings. The Church of St. Astvatsatsin is the oldest part of the monastery. The Church of St. Gregory is the main church, distinguished by its magnificent dome and cross decorations. The largest and most impressive building is the Church of St. Mary.

Jermuk

One of Armenia’s most famous resorts and spa towns, situated at an altitude of 1,600 meters above sea level.

It has been known for its healing waters since ancient times. The ancient Armenians believed in the healing power of the local springs, and this tradition has continued throughout the centuries. There are more than 40 springs in the area surrounding the town, containing waters rich in various minerals.

However, it is known not only for its spas but also for its breathtaking natural landscapes, which are popular destinations for hikers, nature lovers, and photographers. One of the most beautiful is the 70-meter Jermuk Waterfall. Its surroundings are lined with promenades, allowing close-up views.

Tatev Monastery

The monastery was one of the outstanding centers of medieval Armenian religious life.

The exact date of its foundation is unknown, but the first significant constructions began in the early 9th century. It flourished under the Armenian Bagratid dynasty and became a significant religious center in the 13th century, known for its scientific and religious work.

Its largest church is the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, built in the 9th century. Its interior is covered with beautifully carved stones and artistic decorations, with images of saints and religious symbols adorning the walls. It was not only a religious center but also a center of scientific and artistic life.

One of the monastery’s special features is that a 5.7 km cable car was built to the monastery in recent times. This is the world’s longest single-span cable car and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the canyon and surrounding mountains.

Karahunj

The site is often referred to as the „Armenian Stonehenge”, an ancient megalithic observatory and sanctuary.

Based on archaeological excavations, the observatory was established approximately 6,000 years ago. Archaeologists believe that the site may have functioned as a sacred center where ancient Armenians conducted astronomical observations and held religious rituals. The area may also have served as astronomical reference points.

The large stone group in the center of Karahunj consists of about 200 stones. The most striking is the series of anthropomorphic, monolithic stones that are 3-4 meters high and take various forms. Some have small holes that were used for timekeeping. The stones and their arrangement were designed to also monitor solstices and lunar phases.

Haghpat-Sanahin Monasteries

The Haghpat and Sanahin monasteries are located in northwestern Armenia along the Debed River.

Haghpat Monastery is one of the most important of the two centers and was built in the 10th century. It was a flourishing religious center during the Bagrationi dynasty. Several significant buildings are located on its grounds, the most famous of which is the Church of St. Mary. Its interior is decorated with artworks, frescoes, and religious motifs.

The Sanahin Monastery is located close to Haghpat, and there was a historical and religious connection between the two sites. Its name means „this is the place where sciences are taught” which well reflects its religious and scientific role.

It’s famous for its medieval defensive towers, dating from the 9th-12th centuries. These towers once served both defensive and residential purposes and still reflect the character of a fortified village today.

The highest peak of the Caucasus, Shkhara, is located near Ushguli. It’s a popular destination for mountaineers and hikers.

Batumi

Georgia’s 2nd largest city is located on the Black Sea coast.

It’s one of the country’s tourist centers. At the beginning of the 21st century, it underwent a major transformation, with many modern buildings and hotels being built. It’s famous for its vibrant nightlife, with numerous bars, clubs, and casinos.

Its most beautiful sights are two religious buildings, both part of the World Heritage. The Bagrati Cathedral is a partly ruined church but still offers a wonderful sight. The Gelati Monastery was one of the most important centers of medieval Georgian culture. Within its walls are Georgia’s most significant religious and cultural monuments.

Vardzia

An impressive cave monastery and fortress in the southwestern part, along the Kura River.

Its construction was begun by King George III in the second half of the 12th century and completed by his daughter, Queen Tamar. The purpose of the construction was to create a well-defensible fortress. In the 13th century, it became a thriving religious center, home to thousands of monks. A significant part of the monastery was destroyed in the earthquake of 1283.

Vardzia covers an area of more than 6000 square meters and consists of more than 300 caves, forming a 13-story complex. The caves served as dwellings, churches, storage, and stables.

The most important building of the monastery is the Church of the Assumption, built in the 12th century. The frescoes of the church, which also depict Queen Tamar, are among Georgia’s most significant medieval artistic creations.

Lake Rica

The picturesque environment of the lake in the northwestern part, its clear blue water, and the stunning view of the surrounding mountains make it a popular tourist destination.

It’s located at an altitude of about 950 meters above sea level, with a maximum depth of 116 meters. You can boat on the lake and there are numerous hiking trails around it.

Near the lake is a dacha that was allegedly used by Joseph Stalin as a summer residence. This historic building can still be visited today.

Mtskheta

One of Georgia’s oldest cities, located 20 km northwest of Tbilisi.

It was the capital of the Kingdom of Iberia from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD. In 317, the Georgians adopted Christianity here, and the city remains one of the country’s main ecclesiastical centers, a city of coronation and burial.

Its most famous building is the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. This is the center of the Georgian Orthodox Church and the country’s second-largest ecclesiastical building after the recently completed Sameba in Tbilisi.

Another significant monument is the Jvari Monastery. Legend has it that Saint Nino erected a cross on the highest mountain of Mtskheta. This is considered the country’s first cross. The monastery was built in the 6th century and is one of the most beautiful examples of early medieval Georgian architecture.

Kakheti

This region is the center of Georgian winemaking and has numerous historical and cultural attractions that make it appealing to tourists.

Most of the country’s oldest and most famous wineries are located here. There are over 500 grape varieties in the region. Many wineries welcome visitors where we can taste local wines.

Borjomi

One of Georgia’s most popular resort towns thanks to its mineral water. There are numerous spas and wellness centers.

Borjomi mineral water is very famous, its healing properties were known even in ancient times. It’s a natural, carbonated medicinal water that springs from over a thousand meters deep underground. There’s a spring in the town’s park where we can taste the mineral water.

Near the town is Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park. It covers more than 85 thousand hectares and is one of Georgia’s largest and most important nature reserves. There are excellent hiking and trekking opportunities here.

Martvili Canyon

This beautiful canyon is located 50 km north of Kutaisi.

It consists of several sections, each offering different natural attractions such as limestone rocks, emerald-colored rivers, and waterfalls. The canyon is about 2.4 kilometers long and reaches depths of up to 40 meters in places.

One of the most popular recreational activities is boating on the crystal-clear Abasha River. During this, we can admire the rocky walls and waterfalls up close. Its most beautiful part is the Gachedili waterfall, which is one of the most photogenic spots in the canyon.

Prometheus Cave

Also known as Kumistavi Cave, it’s one of Georgia’s largest and most spectacular cave systems. It’s located 20 km from Kutaisi, so it’s definitely worth visiting if we’re there.

The cave is several kilometers long, with huge underground chambers, stalactites, stalagmites, and columns. Among its spectacular formations are various shaped dripstone sculptures, which are illuminated with colorful lights.

Not only are there guided walking tours, but boat trips are also organized in some sections where underground rivers allow.

Ananuri Fortress

Located on the banks of the Aragvi River, near the Zhinvali Reservoir, about 70 km north of Tbilisi. It’s situated in a strategic location that previously played an important defensive role.

Its construction began in the 13th century and was expanded in the 17th century. The fortress was the seat of the Dukes of Aragvi, who ruled the area. It has massive stone walls and several towers. Its walls and bastions have been preserved in good condition.

Within the fortress is a three-story bell tower that rises above the surrounding landscape. The tower offers a breathtaking view of the entire fortification and the landscape.
