Zakopane is Poland’s most famous mountain resort town. The city has been attracting visitors for centuries thanks to its unparalleled natural environment, unique wooden architecture, and rich folk traditions.

In the settlement also called the „Capital of the Tatras”, traditional Góral culture meets modern tourist infrastructure. Zakopane transforms into a skiing paradise in winter, while in summer it becomes a favorite destination for hikers and nature lovers, where fresh mountain air and stunning views guarantee an unforgettable experience.

Zakopane attractions

Krupówki Street

The pedestrian street running through the heart of the city is Zakopane’s liveliest and most famous public space, winding approximately one kilometer through the city center. The main thoroughfare, paved in 1888, has become the alpha and omega of sightseeing, where every visitor eventually finds themselves.

Traditional-style wooden buildings line both sides of the pedestrian street, housing restaurants, cafés, gift shops, and stores selling Polish handicraft products. In shops showcasing Góral culture, tourists can purchase traditional costumes, wood carvings, and oscypek cheese, while street musicians often create atmosphere with their melodies.

It’s especially spectacular in winter when the street is decorated for Christmas against the panorama of snow-covered mountains. In summer, the open terraces are full of life, and vendors dressed in Góral folk costumes add color to the scene. Impressive mountain views await strollers at both ends of the street, providing a unique experience for an urban pedestrian area.

Gubałówka

The 1,126-meter-high Gubałówka hill is one of Zakopane’s most visited viewpoints, accessible by funicular from the city center. The funicular, opened in 1938, takes passengers to the summit in just a few minutes, where a 360-degree panorama unfolds before them.

From the hilltop, there’s a breathtaking view of the main ridge of the Tatra Mountains, including Giewont and the highest peak of the Polish Tatras, the 2,499-meter Rysy. On clear days, visibility extends up to 100 kilometers, and from the viewing terraces, tourists can enjoy not only the mountains but also the panorama of Zakopane below.

Modern tourist infrastructure awaits guests at the summit: restaurants, cafés, and playgrounds can all be found here. In winter, the area transforms into a ski terrain, while in summer it’s a popular excursion destination for families and hikers alike. It’s an excellent starting point for exploring the surrounding mountains, with several hiking trails leading from here toward the Tatras.

Giewont

The 1,894-meter-high mountain is Zakopane’s emblematic peak, whose distinctive outline is recognizable from every direction in the city. The peak’s uniqueness comes from the 15-meter-high steel cross standing on it, erected in 1901 to celebrate the beginning of the new millennium.

The hiking trail to the mountain is one of Zakopane’s most popular excursions, achievable in approximately 4-5 hours round trip. The route starts from the Kuźnice district and leads to the summit via the Kalatówki shelter, where chains assist the climb on the steep rocks in the final section.

From the summit, there’s an unparalleled view of Zakopane and the surrounding valleys, but the area around the cross also holds spiritual significance for Polish believers. The mountain’s name means „sleeping knight” in Polish, as its profile from the side resembles a reclining warrior. It’s important to know that staying at the summit during storms is life-threatening, as the metal cross acts as a lightning rod.

The mountain can be seen from everywhere in the city

Morskie Oko

The Sea Eye Lake is the largest and one of the most beautiful lakes in the Tatra Mountains, located at 1,395 meters altitude in a glacially carved valley basin. The lake’s name comes from the fact that its deepened waves evoke the sea, creating a mystical atmosphere among the surrounding rocks.

The path to the lake is one of Zakopane’s most popular excursions, starting from the Palenica Białczańska parking lot and representing approximately 9 kilometers of walking one way. The route is comfortable and well-developed, making it walkable with families, though horse-drawn carriages or electric taxis can also be used to cover the distance.

A walking path leads around the turquoise-blue lake, offering beautiful views of Rysy peak and waterfalls cascading down the surrounding rock faces. Morskie Oko is also the starting point for trails leading higher, such as to the Czarny Staw (Black Lake) located above it. A mountain shelter operates beside the lake, where hikers can rest and taste local dishes.

One of the most beautiful lakes in the Tatra Mountains

Tatra National Park

The Tatrzański Park Narodowy, founded in 1954, is Poland’s oldest national park, protecting 22,000 hectares of the Polish side of the Tatra Mountains. The park preserves the region’s unique alpine ecosystem and rare plant and animal species, including the chamois, which is the symbol of the Tatras.

The park features more than 270 kilometers of marked hiking trails at various difficulty levels, from family-friendly walking paths to ridge routes reserved for experienced mountaineers. The park’s five valleys – including Kościeliska Valley and Chochołowska Valley – await visitors with different natural attractions and wildlife.

The national park’s visitor center is located in Zakopane, where detailed information about current trail conditions, weather, and hiking routes is available. An entrance fee must be paid to enter the park, with proceeds used for area conservation. This area of outstanding biodiversity significance has been on UNESCO’s list of biosphere reserves since 1993, and was also nominated as a World Heritage site jointly with the Slovak side in 1992.

Wielka Krokiew Ski Jump

Zakopane’s most famous sports facility has become a symbol of the city in recent decades. The jump, built in 1925, has been renovated several times, most recently modernized in 2011, when it received a K-120 classification, meaning the critical point is at 120 meters.

The facility regularly hosts ski jumping World Cup competitions, including the annual Zakopane events that attract crowds of tens of thousands. The museum next to the jump allows visitors to learn about the history of Polish ski jumping and its legendary champions, including Adam Małysz and Kamil Stoch.

The jump area offers beautiful views of Zakopane and the Tatras in both summer and winter. In summer, it’s possible to approach the jump and visit the viewpoints, where tourists can experience how steep the slope is from which competitors descend.

Jaszczurówka Chapel

The chapel in the Jaszczurówka district is one of Zakopane’s most photographed architectural masterpieces, perfectly blending traditional Góral wooden architecture with sacred function. The church dedicated to St. Stephen the Martyr, built between 1904 and 1907, was designed by Stanisław Witkiewicz, the creator of the Zakopane style.

Its uniqueness lies in the richly detailed wood carvings: the decorated beam system, ornamental elements, and distinctive tower all celebrate Góral folk art. The interior space exudes an intimate atmosphere, where the wooden furnishings and colored glass windows create a harmonious unity.

The chapel is located on a hilltop, offering stunning views of Giewont and the surrounding mountains. The surrounding cemetery is also an interesting sight, featuring traditional wooden grave monuments. The church is an active parish, so masses are held on Sundays and holidays, providing visitors with a special experience accompanied by traditional Polish church music.

Kuźnice

The eastern district of Zakopane is also one of the most important starting points in the Tatra Mountains. The area’s name comes from the word for „forges” as ironworks once operated here, using charcoal made from wood from the surrounding forests.

Today, Kuźnice is primarily a gathering place for tourists, from where a cable car departs to the Kasprowy Wierch summit, and numerous marked hiking trails lead from here into the mountains. The district has several mountain shelters and inns where hikers can prepare for their journey or rest after descending.

The area is also lively in winter when skiers and snowshoers head into the mountains from here. The Kuźnice area has several moderately difficult hiking trails, ideal for those who want to experience the beauty of the Tatras without climbing the steepest peaks. The cable car, opened in 1936, is itself a technical curiosity, transporting passengers to nearly 2,000 meters altitude.

Kasprowy Wierch

The 2,023-meter-high Kasprowy Wierch is one of the most easily accessible high peaks in the Tatras, reached by cable car from Kuźnice. The cable car, opened in 1936, was pioneering work at the time and remains one of Europe’s oldest still-operating mountain cable cars.

From the summit, a breathtaking 360-degree panorama opens to both the Polish and Slovak sides; on clear days, even the peaks of the High Tatras are visible. The meteorological observatory at the top has been collecting data since 1936, and its role in researching the mountain range’s weather remains significant today.

In winter, it’s a popular ski slope with runs of varying difficulty levels leading down. In summer, it’s an excellent starting point for hiking the surrounding ridges, such as toward Świnica or Giewont. A modern visitor center operates at the summit with a restaurant and viewing terraces, where tourists can enjoy the special atmosphere of the high mountain environment.

Peaks higher than 2000 meters

Dolina Chochołowska

Chochołowska Valley is the longest and one of the most beautiful valleys in the Tatras, stretching nearly 10 kilometers through the mountains. The valley’s uniqueness is its largely flat terrain profile, making it an ideal choice for families and less experienced hikers.

At the valley entrance is the traditional Góral village of Chochołów, famous for its uniformly styled wooden houses from the 19th century. The path through the valley winds among streams, meadows, and forests, where the colorful autumn foliage is particularly spectacular in fall.

At the end of the valley is the Chochołowska shelter, built in 1953 and an excellent resting place for hikers. From here, the journey can continue to higher regions or toward surrounding peaks. The valley is especially beautiful in spring when meadows fill with wildflowers and streams rush swollen from snowmelt.

Villa Koliba

One of Zakopane’s most important cultural centers, built in the late 1890s based on Stanisław Witkiewicz’s designs. The building served as experimental ground for developing the Zakopane style and was the first example of modern adaptation of traditional Góral architecture.

The villa now functions as a museum, serving to present Witkiewicz’s life work and the development of the Zakopane style. The exhibition provides insight into Zakopane’s artistic life at the end of the 19th century, when the city became Poland’s intellectual center.

The building’s interior displays period furnishings, furniture, and decorative elements, all drawing inspiration from Góral traditions. Villa Koliba shows how Witkiewicz blended folk art elements with European Art Nouveau trends. The museum garden is also worth visiting, where visitors can see traditional Góral sculptures and wood carvings.

Zakopane Style Museum (Muzeum Stylu Zakopiańskiego)

Housed in the House of Inspirations (Dom Pod Jedlami), which was once the home of Stefan Żeromski, a famous Polish writer in the early 20th century. The museum was created to document and popularize the architectural and design movement known as the Zakopane style.

The exhibition details how Stanisław Witkiewicz developed the unique architectural language that was built on Góral folk traditions but adapted to modern needs. Furniture, textiles, wood carvings, and other objects on display all demonstrate the style’s characteristics.

The collection contains original design drawings, photographs, and documents showing the style’s spread and influence in other parts of Poland. The museum building itself is a masterpiece of the Zakopane style, with detailed wood carvings, distinctive roofing, and traditional solutions. Visitors can learn how Zakopane became Poland’s cultural center at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries, and how this architectural movement relates to the era’s search for Polish national identity.

Zakopane weather: when is the best time to visit?

Spring (March–May):

Spring months bring variable weather to Zakopane, when snow is still often encountered in the mountains while winter melts in the city. In late March and April, daytime temperatures range between 5-12°C, and in May can warm up to 15-18°C. This season is less crowded, making it an ideal period for those who prefer quieter hiking, though thorough preparation is necessary due to weather unpredictability.

Summer (June–August):

Summer months offer pleasant, cool weather in the mountains, when daytime temperatures typically range around 20-25°C in the city, while it’s 10-15°C cooler in higher regions. This is peak season for hikers, when most tourist trails are accessible and mountain shelters operate at full capacity. Afternoon showers can be expected, so a rain jacket is definitely necessary.

Autumn (September–November):

The autumn period is one of Zakopane’s most beautiful seasons, when deciduous forests dress in golden yellow, orange, and red. September still offers pleasant hiking weather with 12-18°C temperatures, October features cooler weather of 5-12°C, and November may bring snowfall. Autumn months are less busy, allowing for quieter mountain excursions.

Winter (December–February):

Winter months represent Zakopane’s golden age, when the city transforms into a true winter wonderland. Temperatures range between -5°C and -15°C, but -25°C can occur during colder periods. Snow amounts are usually abundant, creating excellent skiing conditions. This is the busiest period, when accommodations and ski lift areas are flooded with tourist crowds, especially during Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

Best time to visit Zakopane:

The best periods to visit Zakopane are late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September), when there’s pleasant hiking weather, nature blooms or displays colorful autumn splendor, and tourist crowds are still tolerable. Late May and June feature average temperatures of 15-20°C, while September offers pleasant weather of 12-18°C. For winter sports enthusiasts, it’s worth visiting between mid-December and early March, when snow coverage is guaranteed and ski slopes operate at full capacity.

Market Square (Rynek)

Located in the heart of Wrocław, it is Poland’s second-largest market square after Krakow’s main square. The 3.8-hectare square-shaped area has served as the city’s central hub since the 13th century and remains the main stage of urban life today.

Most of the colorful burgher houses surrounding the square were built in the 14th-16th centuries, combining Gothic and Renaissance stylistic elements. Particularly noteworthy are the twin towers called „Jaś i Małgorzata” (Hansel and Gretel) and the famous Town Hall located in the center of the square.

Numerous restaurants, cafés, and shops operate in the area, while the square serves as a venue for various events, fairs, and concerts. In summer, outdoor terraces and frequent cultural programs make the traffic particularly lively.

Town Hall

The Gothic architectural masterpiece standing in the center of Market Square was gradually built between the 13th-16th centuries. The building’s facade is decorated with ornate carvings, tympanum, and the famous astronomical clock that has been operating continuously since 1580.

The most prominent part of the Town Hall is the 66-meter-high tower, which was long the city’s tallest structure. From the top of the tower, there is a stunning panorama of the entire city and the Oder River. Among the building’s interior spaces, the Great Council Chamber stands out, boasting rich stucco decoration and historical paintings.

Today it houses the Municipal Historical Museum, where over a thousand years of Wrocław’s history is presented. The exhibition includes the city’s medieval documents, old maps, and objects showcasing different eras of civic life. The famous Piwnica Świdnicka restaurant is located in the building’s basement, operating since 1273 and being one of Europe’s oldest inns.

Quarter of Four Denominations

A unique part of Wrocław where four different Christian denominational churches are located close to each other. This area is an outstanding example of the city’s multicultural past and the tradition of religious coexistence.

The quarter contains the Roman Catholic Church of St. Vincent and St. James, the Protestant Peace Church, the Orthodox Nativity Church, and the Reformed church. Each building represents a different architectural style, from Baroque to Byzantine style. The Peace Church is particularly significant as it was built for the Protestant community in the 17th century when religious tensions were still very strong in the region.

The Ossolineum library is also located here, which is one of Poland’s oldest and most significant libraries. The area’s atmospheric streets, cafés, and galleries make it a favorite meeting place for local intellectuals and tourists. The quarter is best explored on foot, as the short distances allow easy touring of all attractions.

Sky Tower

Wrocław’s tallest building at 212 meters significantly stands out from the city’s silhouette. The skyscraper opened in 2012 is a modern business and shopping center, symbolizing the city’s dynamic development.

The building is distributed across 51 floors and has three main functions: shopping center on the lower levels, offices in the middle section, and apartments on the upper floors. The observation deck on the 49th floor offers a stunning 360-degree panorama of Wrocław and the surrounding Lower Silesian landscape. On clear days, you can see up to a 50-kilometer radius.

Sky Tower is remarkable not only for its height but also for its modern architectural solutions. The combination of glass and steel is particularly spectacular at night when LED lighting plays with colorful lights on the building’s facade. The shopping center contains more than 270 shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues.

Cathedral of St. John the Baptist

The foundation stone of Wrocław’s oldest church was laid in 1244, and it is considered an excellent example of Gothic style in Poland.

The cathedral’s two 98-meter-high towers are recognizable from afar. The church’s interior boasts impressive cross vaults, stained glass windows, and a Baroque altar. The main nave contains the sarcophagus of St. Hedwig, the patron saint of Silesia, who was laid to eternal rest here in 1267.

It was severely damaged during World War II but underwent careful restoration after the war. Today it still functions as an active parish church and regularly hosts concerts due to its excellent acoustics. The church’s crypt contains the graves of several Silesian dukes and bishops, which preserve important memories of the region’s history.

St. Elizabeth’s Church

One of Wrocław’s most imposing Gothic structures rises near Market Square. The church was built in the 14th-15th centuries, and its 83-meter tower was long the city’s second-tallest structure after the Town Hall tower.

The church’s specialty is that it originally had three towers, but the two smaller towers now stand separately and are known as „Jaś i Małgorzata” (Hansel and Gretel). 302 steps lead up to the main tower, and from its top, there is an unparalleled panorama of Market Square and the city center. The viewpoint is especially popular at sunset for its romantic atmosphere.

Its interior encompasses a huge space that can accommodate up to 25,000 worshippers. The church walls contain numerous valuable Gothic and Baroque artworks, including particularly beautiful altars and carvings. The crypt beneath the church serves as the resting place of many historical figures.

University of Wrocław

It began operating in 1702 as a Jesuit foundation and is today one of Poland’s most prestigious higher education institutions. The university’s main building is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture, erected between 1728-1741 based on Christoph Tausch’s plans.

The university’s most important attraction is the Aula Leopoldina, the magnificent Baroque ceremonial hall decorated with frescoes proclaiming the glory of the Habsburg dynasty. The paintings on the hall’s ceiling depict allegorical scenes that glorify science and wisdom. The hall’s acoustics are excellent, so concerts and ceremonial events are still regularly held here.

The university library has more than 3 million volumes, including numerous medieval manuscripts and rare prints. The Oratorium Marianum, the university church, was also built in Baroque style and boasts particularly beautiful stucco decoration.

Racławice Panorama

One of the world’s most impressive panoramic paintings, depicting the events of the Battle of Racławice (1794). This monumental artwork was painted by Jan Styka and Wojciech Kossak in 1893-1894, originally created for the Millennium Exhibition in Lviv.

The panorama is 15 meters high and 114 meters in circumference, representing a total of 1,700 square meters of painted surface. At the center of the painting stands Tadeusz Kościuszko, leading the Polish peasant armies against Russian forces. The picture creates a three-dimensional effect with special lighting and real objects (cannons, wagons, hay bales) placed in the foreground of the painting.

Its presentation provides a special experience: visitors can view the work while standing on a rotating platform, while sound effects and narration help understand the historical events. The painting is outstanding not only for its artistic value but also for its historical significance, as it immortalizes one of the key battles of the Polish independence struggle.

Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski)

Wrocław’s oldest district is located on one of the Oder River’s islands. This area is the city’s cradle, where a fortified settlement stood as early as the 10th century and where Christianity first took root in the region.

The island creates a unique atmosphere with its atmospheric gas-lit streets, Gothic and Baroque buildings. Besides the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, there are also St. Martin’s Church, St. Giles Church, and the Geological Museum. The former canonical houses now house museums and cultural institutions.

Cathedral Island is connected to the rest of the city by numerous bridges, the most romantic of which is Tumski Bridge. In the evenings, the gaslight creates a special atmosphere, and the island is comfortably walkable. The botanical garden in the southern part of the island boasts more than 7,500 plant species and is particularly spectacular in spring and summer.

Jaś and Małgorzata

„Hansel and Gretel” is one of Wrocław’s most iconic sights, consisting of two medieval gate towers on the northern side of Market Square. The towers were built in the 15th century and originally formed part of St. Elizabeth’s Church as small bell towers.

Between the two towers is a small gate that leads to Św. Elżbiety Street. The towers are about 40 meters high and show characteristic Gothic stylistic features. They probably got their names because of their shape, as they stand next to each other like two siblings or a loving couple.

The towers now function as museums and host exhibitions on Wrocław’s history. From the tops of the towers, there is a beautiful view of Market Square and the surrounding district. This view is particularly photogenic, making it a favorite photography spot for tourists.

Sand Island (Piasek Island)

Another small island on the Oder River, located near Cathedral Island. The island got its name from its sandy soil (piasek = sand in Polish), and today it is a quiet, park-like area.

The island is primarily made famous by the Church of Our Lady on the Sand, built in Gothic style in the 14th century. The church’s red brick architecture and slender tower are characteristic elements of Silesian architecture. The smaller buildings around the church once served as monastic cells.

From the island, there is a beautiful view of Cathedral Island and the towers of St. John’s Cathedral. In summer, it is a favorite resting place for locals and tourists alike, where you can picnic near the river.

Polinka

Wrocław’s modern transportation attraction is a cable car system that opened in 2013. The cable car spans across the Oder River and its tributaries.

It is 2.1 kilometers long, and each of its 18 modern cabins can carry 8 people. During the journey, there is a stunning view of the city, river, and green areas. The cabin also passes over Széchenyi Park, which offers a particularly beautiful sight in autumn and spring.

The journey takes about 20 minutes. The cable car is especially popular at sunset when the city lights begin to come on.

Water Tower

The neo-Renaissance building built at the end of the 19th century now functions as a cultural center. The 42-meter-high tower building was completed in 1897 and long formed the central element of the city’s water supply.

Its architectural specialty is that it combines functional and aesthetic elements. The red brick facade is decorated with ornate carvings and window frames, while the water tank at the top of the tower could once store 600 cubic meters of water. A small park surrounds the building, decorated with fountains and sculptural works.

Galleries, exhibition halls, and concert halls are located on different levels of the tower. From the observation terrace on the top level, there is a 360-degree panorama of the city. The building’s specialty is that sometimes you can also visit the water tank, where they demonstrate the water purification technologies of the era.

Centennial Hall

One of the most important works of 20th-century world architecture, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2006.

The monumental reinforced concrete building built in 1913 was created for the 100th anniversary of Napoleon’s defeat at Leipzig and was originally called the People’s Hall. This 6,000-seat architectural masterpiece was completed based on the bold plans of German architect Max Berg.

The hall’s specialty lies in its contemporary architectural innovations and structural solutions. Bold structural solutions were applied in its construction, using raw concrete as building material, which was considered a revolutionary building material at the time. Its 28-meter dome is crowned by a steel and glass lantern, providing a stunning sight both from outside and inside. The building is the world’s largest reinforced concrete central building, representing an exemplary engineering achievement to this day.

In front of the Hall is one of Poland and Europe’s largest and most spectacular fountains, operating with three hundred water nozzles. The monumental fountain performs water dances to various melodies, and in the evening hours, light shows enhance the atmosphere, thus serving simultaneously as a resting place and spectacular entertainment for locals and tourists alike.

Szczytnicki Park

One of Wrocław’s largest parks, covering more than 100 hectares, encompassing approximately 10 square kilometers of area.

The park’s land was first mentioned in writing in 1204, when Henry I the Bearded donated the village of Stitnic to the monastery of St. Vincent, where shields were manufactured for the ducal forces. The historically significant area was home to fishermen and farmers, and in 1318 the monks sold the village to the city council.

In 1783, Frederick Louis Hohenlohe, commander-in-chief of Wrocław’s garrison, purchased the forest in the village of Stare Szczytniki and established one of the first English-style parks on the European continent. It boasts extremely rich vegetation: it is home to about 350 tree species from Europe, Asia, and North America.

Wrocław weather: when is the best time to visit?

Wrocław is characterized by a continental climate with a four-season cycle, where each season is markedly distinct from the others. The city’s weather shows typically Central European features, with moderate precipitation and significant temperature differences between seasons.

Spring (March-May):

The spring months bring gradual warming when nature comes alive in parks and gardens. March is still cool, with temperatures frequently between 5-10°C, but by May the temperature rises to around 15-20°C. Spring is a rainy season, but many sunny days make sightseeing pleasant.

Summer (June-August):

The summer months are warm and relatively dry, with average temperatures of 20-25°C. July and August are the warmest months when temperatures can rise above 30°C. Long days and little precipitation characterize this period, ideal for outdoor activities and festivals.

Autumn (September-November):

The autumn period begins with gradual cooling, when September still brings pleasant temperatures around 15-20°C. October is already cooler, with temperatures moving between 10-15°C, and November typically shows values around 5-10°C. It’s a rainy season, with frequent fog and overcast weather.

Winter (December-February):

The winter months are cold, with temperatures around or below 0°C. Snowfall is frequent, though it doesn’t always stay for long. December and January are the coldest months when temperatures move between -5 and +2°C. Short days and early darkness characterize this season.

Best time to travel:

The most pleasant time to travel to Wrocław is between May and September, when temperatures move pleasantly between 15-25°C and days are longer. It’s especially recommended to visit the city between June and August when summer festivals and outdoor programs enrich cultural life.

Early September is also an excellent choice, as the weather is still warm but tourist crowds are already diminishing, so you can explore the attractions more peacefully. Among the spring months, May is recommended when it’s already warm enough for comfortable dressing during walks, and the parks’ blooming provides a beautiful sight during sightseeing.

Poznań is one of Poland’s most significant cities, offering numerous attractions to tourists due to its historical past.

It is Poland’s 5th largest city after Warsaw, Krakow, Łódź and Wrocław. The capital of the Greater Poland Voivodeship, it is also one of the country’s oldest and most important cultural centers. The city was founded in 968 and played a key role in the formation of the Polish state. The first Polish rulers were crowned here, so Poznań rightfully bears the title „cradle of Polish statehood”.

Old Market Square (Stary Rynek)

Located in the heart of Poznań, it is one of Europe’s most beautiful medieval market squares.

The square-shaped plaza, established in the 13th century, measures 141 meters on each side and is a perfect example of rational planning in medieval urban architecture. The colorful burgher houses surrounding the square mainly acquired their present form in the 16th-17th centuries, when the city experienced its economic golden age.

The town hall stands in the center of the square, surrounded by numerous buildings of historical significance. On the southern side of the square is the famous Buker House, which now houses the Poznań Historical Museum, while on the northern side stands the baroque Działyński Palace. Beneath the square runs an underground labyrinth that now functions as a museum and restaurant.

In summer it hosts outdoor concerts, fairs and cultural events, while in winter it welcomes visitors with its Christmas market. The terraces of cafés and restaurants around the square provide an ideal place to observe the city’s vibrant life.

Town Hall (Ratusz)

One of the most outstanding works of Polish Renaissance architecture, built on original Gothic foundations from the 13th century.

Italian architect Giovanni Battista di Quadro transformed it in Renaissance style between 1550-1560, creating one of Central Europe’s most beautiful town halls. The building’s façade is dominated by a richly decorated loggia and the characteristic clock tower, on top of which two mechanical goats „fight” each other every day at noon.

The town hall’s interior spaces are equally impressive: the ceiling of the Great Hall is covered with beautiful coffered decoration, while its walls are adorned with portraits of Poznań kings. The Renaissance Hall and King’s Hall also preserve unique artistic treasures, including valuable Flemish tapestries and period furniture. The building now houses the Poznań Historical Museum.

The town hall’s uniqueness is enhanced by the fact that a medieval wine cellar operated in the building’s basement, which is still visitable today. The observatory in the middle of the 56-meter-high clock tower offers an unparalleled panorama of the entire city.

Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral

Poland’s oldest cathedral, built around 968, simultaneously becoming the country’s first center of Christianity.

Originally built in Romanesque style, the church was rebuilt several times in later centuries: it was enriched with Gothic elements in the 14th century, then with baroque elements in the 18th century. The current neo-Gothic exterior was formed in the early 20th century after the 1945 bombings caused severe damage.

The cathedral’s interior preserves impressive artistic treasures. In the nave are the tombs of Polish princes Mieszko I and Bolesław I the Brave, who were the founders of the first Polish ruling dynasty. The Złota Kaplica (Golden Chapel) is a Polish national memorial site where medieval Polish kings rest. The chapel’s interior is decorated with rich gilding and mosaics depicting key moments in Polish history.

The cathedral’s organ dates from 1876 and is considered one of Europe’s largest instruments. From the tower, there’s a wonderful view of the entire Ostrów Tumski island and the Warta River, especially at sunset.

The oldest cathedral in the country

Ostrów Tumski

Poznań’s oldest part, an island on the Warta River where the city’s core was formed in the 10th century.

This place can be considered the cradle of Polish statehood, as the first Polish rulers’ residence and the first Christian temple were built here. The island is still characterized by a medieval atmosphere today: narrow cobblestone streets, historic churches, and a quiet environment await visitors.

The island’s central building is the aforementioned cathedral, but several smaller churches are also located here. St. Margaret’s Church dates from the 13th century, while St. Martin’s Church was built in the 14th century. The Lubrański Academy building, which opened in 1519 as Poland’s first higher education institution, is also located here. The building now houses the archiepiscopal library, which preserves manuscripts and incunabula of unparalleled value.

Ostrów Tumski’s special atmosphere is enhanced by the fact that every evening a lamplighter walks around the island and lights the gas lamps, which is unique in Europe. From the island, there’s a beautiful view of the Warta River and the modern city district rising on the other side.

Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Poznań Fara)

One of Poznań’s most imposing baroque buildings, built between 1651-1701 for the Jesuits.

The church, designed by Bartłomiej Wąsowski and Giovanni Catenacci, is a masterpiece of Polish baroque architecture, a worthy counterpart to the nearby cathedral. The 78-meter-high towers are visible from afar, making it an iconic building of the city.

The church’s interior displays impressive baroque decoration: the nave’s vault is covered with frescoes by Alessandro Sanquirico depicting scenes from the Virgin Mary’s life. The main altar is the work of Pompeo Ferrari from 1727 and is an excellent example of period sculpture. Each side altar was built in honor of different saints, with rich marble decoration and baroque sculpture. The church’s organ dates from the 18th century and regular concerts are held on it.

The Fara’s specialty is that numerous historical figures rest in its crypt, including Poznań bishops and members of local noble families. The corridor system running beneath the church provides insight into medieval times and is partly visitable today. The square in front of the church occasionally hosts concerts and cultural events, especially during summer months.

Celebrities rest in the crypt

Imperial Palace

The palace was built between 1905-1910 as German Emperor Wilhelm II’s Poznań residence.

Berlin architect Franz Schwechten designed it in neo-Romanesque style, intended to embody the symbol of German power in Polish territories. The palace’s construction was part of the Germanization policy, but paradoxically today it is one of the important centers of Polish culture.

The building’s imposing dimensions are impressive: the main building is 120 meters long and contains more than 300 rooms. The interior spaces received rich decoration: marble cladding, mosaics, and period furniture characterize the representative halls. The frescoes in the throne room depict great moments in German history, while the library room houses valuable collections. The palace is surrounded by an English-style garden.

Today it functions as a cultural center: it houses the Zamek Cultural Center, which hosts theatrical performances, concerts and exhibitions. Due to the palace’s historical significance and current cultural function, it occupies a unique place in Poznań’s cultural life and serves as an example of how historical buildings can be utilized for modern purposes.

Citadel Park

Poznań’s largest and most beautiful park, developed on the site of a former Prussian fortress.

The original citadel was built between 1876-1880 and played an important role in the city’s 19th-20th century history. During World War II, the heaviest battles for Poznań’s liberation took place here, so the park is also a memorial site. On the 100-hectare area, a peaceful environment now awaits visitors.

The park contains several museums dealing with the city’s and region’s history. The Military Museum is housed in the citadel’s former casemates and welcomes visitors with a rich armory and uniform collection. The Greater Poland Uprising Museum commemorates the 1918-1919 uprising when Poles won their independence from German rule.

The park’s natural values are not negligible either: more than 3000 trees and shrubs are found here, including rare and exotic species. The park’s two small lakes, numerous fountains and carefully designed flower beds make walks varied.

Malta Lake

The lake is one of Poznań’s most popular recreational areas, an artificially created lake from a tributary of the Warta River.

Created in the 1950s, it has since been the favorite relaxation spot for the city’s residents. The park and beaches around the 2.2 km long and 460-meter wide lake attract crowds in summer, while in winter it offers opportunities for skating and winter sports.

Around the lake are numerous sports facilities: a regatta course where international rowing competitions are regularly held, an ice rink, tennis courts and a golf course. The Malta Ski Center operates ski slopes in winter and functions as a bobsled track in summer. There’s also a thermal bath in the area where you can bathe year-round. The beaches on the lake’s southern shore welcome bathers with sandy beaches and clean water.

Palm House

One of Europe’s largest and most modern palm houses, opened in 1910 in Wilson Park.

The Art Nouveau style greenhouse originally covered 4500 square meters, but underwent major renovation between 2004-2009, resulting in a 7000 square meter display of tropical and subtropical flora today.

The palm house contains more than 17,000 plant species representing different climatic zones. In the tropical rainforest section, an authentic jungle atmosphere is created with waterfalls, bridges and dense vegetation. The desert section showcases adaptation strategies of dry climates with cacti and succulent plants. The temperate zone section features Mediterranean plants, including olive trees, citrus fruits and lavender. The newest section presents the unique flora of the Australian continent.

The Palm House’s specialty is the tropical butterfly section, where more than 60 different butterfly species fly freely among visitors. Interactive exhibitions in the palm house demonstrate the ecological role of plants and the effects of climate change.

All information can be found here!

Poznań Zoo

The zoo opened in 1974 and now cares for more than 3000 animals from 300 different species on 119 hectares.

Located in the Nowe Miasto district, it operates with a modern zoo concept: characterized by enclosures that mimic natural habitats and a philosophy that centers animal welfare. The institution plays an active role in preserving endangered species and nature conservation education.

The zoo’s most special part is the Oceanarium, which opened in 2014 and is Poland’s largest aquarium complex. Marine and freshwater fish, sharks, rays and sea turtles live here in huge aquariums. The tropical house presents exotic birds, amphibians and reptiles, while the safari section creates African savanna atmosphere with giraffes, zebras and antelopes. The polar bear enclosure ensures the animals’ natural behavior with its modern design and large-sized pool.

All information can be found here!

Best museums in Poznań

National Museum (Muzeum Narodowe)

One of Poland’s oldest and most significant museums, operating since 1857.

The main building was built in historicizing style at the beginning of the 20th century and now preserves more than 780,000 artifacts. The museum’s collections cover the complete spectrum of Polish and European art from the Middle Ages to the present day, with special regard to the golden age of Polish painting and international modern art.

The museum’s painting collection is of outstanding value: it contains Poland’s largest Jacek Malczewski collection, with more than 200 works by this great master of symbolism. The 19th-century Polish painting section presents Jan Matejko’s historical compositions, Józef Chełmoński’s realistic landscapes and Władysław Podkowiński’s impressionist works. The European art section contains works by Flemish, Dutch and German masters, including works by Lucas Cranach and Peter Brueghel.

The museum’s specialty is the decorative arts collection, which displays European and Asian porcelains, silverware, textiles and furniture. The numismatic collection contains more than 200,000 coins and medals, among which medieval Polish coins and modern commemorative coins can be found.

All information can be found here!

Military Museum

Located in the Citadel Park area, in the former Prussian fortress’s casemates since 1963.

The museum’s collection presents Poland’s military history from the Middle Ages to the present day, with special regard to the military history of Poznań and Greater Poland Voivodeship. The authentic environment — the 19th-century fortress’s halls and corridors — creates a unique atmosphere and allows for authentic evocation of historical events.

Among the museum’s most valuable pieces are everything from medieval weaponry to World War II uniforms. The memorials of the Greater Poland Uprising (1918-1919) received a separate section: here you can see the former freedom fighters’ weapons, uniforms and personal items. The World War II section presents Polish soldiers’ fight against Nazi occupation and the local resistance movement’s activities. The collection also contains rare documents, maps and photographs.

The museum’s outdoor section displays heavy equipment: tanks, cannons and other military vehicles that show the development of 20th-century warfare. Interactive panels placed on the casemate walls demonstrate the course of battles in Poznań.

Poznań Croissant Museum (Rogalowe Muzeum Poznania)

The unique institution dedicates itself to the tradition and preparation of the Poznań rogal (croissant).

The museum is located in the heart of the Old Town, near Stary Rynek, in an authentic 16th-century bakery that provides the perfect environment for presenting the tradition. The rogal is not just a bakery product in Poznań, but part of the city’s cultural identity, which received European Union protected designation of origin in 2008.

The museum holds interactive demonstrations where visitors can learn about the history and unique recipe of the Poznań rogal. According to tradition, the pastry was made in honor of St. Martin and is the central element of celebrations held every November 11th, St. Martin’s Day. Making the rogal requires special knowledge: the dough must be rolled out in seven layers, then filled with poppy seed, almond and butter-flavored filling.

Visitors can not only observe the preparation process but also try making rogal themselves. The museum also has a small shop where freshly baked rogals can be purchased.

Poznań has a moderate continental climate characterized by four well-distinguishable seasons. The city’s weather is shaped by the alternating influence of Atlantic Ocean and continental air masses, so precipitation is relatively evenly distributed throughout the year.

Spring (March-May):

The spring period is characterized by pleasant temperatures and gradually increasing sunshine. From mid-March, temperatures range between 5-15°C, and by May they rise above 20°C. This season is ideal for discovering the city, as nature’s awakening creates a beautiful atmosphere in parks and historical districts.

Summer (June-August):

Summer months are warm but not too hot, with temperatures generally ranging between 18-25°C. In July and August, temperatures above 30°C may occur, but high humidity rarely causes discomfort. Summer rains are generally short-lived, so they don’t disturb outdoor programs.

Autumn (September-November):

The autumn period often gifts visitors with lasting beautiful weather. September is still warm, with pleasant temperatures of 10-15°C expected in October. November is already cooler, but the colorful foliage makes the city’s parks and historical districts’ walkways particularly beautiful.

Winter (December-February):

Winter months are cold, with temperatures generally ranging between -5 and +3°C. Snowfall often occurs, lending a fairy-tale atmosphere to the city. Christmas markets and winter festivals offer special experiences during this period.

Best time to travel:

For visiting Poznań, it’s best to plan your trip between May and September. The May-June period is an excellent choice: temperatures are pleasant (15-22°C), precipitation is low, and the city’s parks bloom in full splendor. Summer months (July-August) are ideal for outdoor programs, activities around Malta Lake, and taking advantage of long daylight hours. September is particularly recommended: it’s still warm (15-20°C), there are fewer tourists, and autumn colors create a beautiful atmosphere at historical sites.

During winter months (December-February), it’s also worth visiting because of Christmas markets and the romantic sight of the snow-covered city, although warmer clothing is needed then.

Gdańsk, on the shores of the Baltic Sea, was a dominant city in the Middle Ages, so it has plenty to offer.

The most important port of Poland and the capital of the Pomeranian Voivodeship. In the early modern period, Gdańsk was a royal city of Poland. Before Warsaw’s rapid growth in the 18th century, it was considered Poland’s richest and largest city. In the late Middle Ages, it was an important maritime port and shipbuilding city, and in the 14th and 15th centuries, it was a member of the Hanseatic League.

Gdańsk attractions

St. Mary’s Church

One of Gdańsk’s most significant attractions is one of the world’s largest brick churches.

The Gothic basilica in the old town began construction in 1343 and took nearly a century and a half to complete. It has monumental dimensions: 105 meters long, with an interior height of 66 meters, and a tower 77.6 meters tall. It can accommodate up to 25,000 people at once.

Inside, numerous outstanding artworks can be found, including the massive Gothic main altar created in 1467 and Hans Memling’s famous „Last Judgment” triptych. From the church tower, there is a wonderful view of the old town and the Baltic Sea coast.

Artus Court

One of Gdańsk’s most famous historical buildings located in the city’s main square.

Originally a meeting place for wealthy merchants and nobles of the medieval Hanseatic League, it was named after the legendary British ruler, King Arthur. The first building was erected in the 14th century, but it was rebuilt in Gothic style at the end of the 15th century, later enriched with Renaissance and Baroque elements.

The impressive wooden ceiling and decorated walls of the great hall are adorned with rich reliefs, paintings, and carvings. The most impressive attraction is the huge Renaissance stove created in 1545, standing 12 meters tall, which is one of Europe’s most beautiful ceramic stoves.

Neptune Fountain

Standing in the main square in front of Artus Court, the fountain is one of the city’s most popular attractions.

The bronze statue was created in 1615 by Peter Husen and Johann Rogge and was erected in 1633. The creation, which combines Renaissance and Mannerist stylistic features, depicts Neptune, the god of the sea, standing on an ornate pedestal with a trident in his hand.

Legend has it that Neptune once grew tired of the people of Gdańsk throwing gold coins into the fountain, so he stirred the water with his trident, creating the famous Gdańsk Goldwasser liqueur that contains gold flakes.

Gdańsk Crane (Żuraw)

The monumental medieval crane is one of the most well-known port structures of the Hanseatic cities and Europe’s oldest preserved loading crane.

The original structure was built in the 14th century, then rebuilt between 1442 and 1444 when it reached its current form. It served simultaneously as a port crane and city gate, making it a unique building due to its dual function. The structure consists of two huge brick towers connected by a massive wooden crane. The mechanism could lift weights of up to 2 tons to a height of 11 meters, thus playing a key role in port loading and mast installation.

Today it operates as part of the Gdańsk National Maritime Museum, where visitors can learn about medieval port life in Gdańsk and the city’s maritime past.

Iconic building of Gdańsk

Brama Wyżynna (Highland Gate)

One of the city’s most significant historical gates was part of the old fortification system.

The impressive Renaissance-style building was constructed at the end of the 16th century based on designs by Flemish architect Willem van den Blocke. The gate was originally Gdańsk’s main entrance, located at the beginning of the Royal Route (Droga Królewska), and served as the first sight for travelers entering the city.

The façade of the gate features rich decorations and symbolic elements referring to Gdańsk’s historical significance.

St. Catherine’s Church

One of Gdańsk’s oldest and most important churches was built in the 13th century.

The church’s patron saint is Catherine of Alexandria, and during the Middle Ages, it was under the authority of the Teutonic Knights. During World War II, the church suffered significant damage but was restored after the war. In 2006, a severe fire damaged it again, but it was subsequently rebuilt.

One of its most outstanding features is its 76-meter-high tower, which houses an impressive carillon. The carillon plays regularly. The interior of the building is impressive, with Gothic arches and valuable artworks. Johannes Hevelius, the famous 17th-century Polish astronomer, is buried here.

Shakespeare Theatre

The modern cultural center revives the 17th-century theatrical traditions of Gdańsk.

In the 17th century, an English playhouse already operated at the site of the theater, which was one of the first permanent theaters in Poland. Gdańsk was then one of the most important cultural centers of the Hanseatic cities, and William Shakespeare’s works were regularly performed.

Its specialty is the openable roof structure, which allows for outdoor performances, similar to the original Globe Theatre in London. It annually hosts the Gdańsk International Shakespeare Festival, one of the world’s most significant Shakespeare events.

Motława Riverfront

One of the city’s most vibrant areas runs along the Motława River.

The promenade along the bank is lined with colorful historical buildings, cozy cafes, restaurants, and tourist boat docks. Many former warehouse buildings have been converted into hotels, restaurants, and museums.

One of the promenade’s attractions is the Green Bridge (Zielony Most), which connects the historical old town with Granary Island.

European Solidarity Centre

The institution presents the history of the Solidarity movement and democratic changes in Poland.

It opened in 2014 near the famous Lenin Shipyard, where in the 1980s, worker resistance began under the leadership of Lech Wałęsa. This later played a significant role in the fall of communism in East-Central Europe.

The center’s modern, industrial-style building is covered with rust-colored steel plates reminiscent of a ship’s form, referring to its shipyard past. Inside the building are interactive exhibitions, archives, and conference rooms. The permanent exhibition documents the history of the Solidarity movement, the workers’ struggle, and the transition process with multimedia tools, original objects, and personal recollections.

Krakow is one of the most visited cities in Central Europe for a reason. Once the capital of Poland, Krakow has a lot to offer tourists.

Poland’s second most populous city, officially named Stołeczne Królewskie Miasto Kraków (Royal Capital City of Kraków), was the capital of Poland until 1596. Warsaw then became the capital.

Kraków stretches along the banks of the Vistula River, in the upper part of the river. The city is near the northern foothills of the Carpathians but lies on a plain.

Kraków is one of Poland’s most important cultural centers and a major tourist destination in Europe. Its historic Old Town and the Kazimierz district were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1978.

Attractions in Kraków

Many of Kraków’s attractions are located in the Old Town (Stare Miasto), one of Europe’s most beautiful historical districts.

It sits at the foot of the Wawel Royal Castle. The 13th-century merchant town features Europe’s largest market square, Rynek Główny, and numerous historical houses, palaces, and churches.

Planty and the City Walls

In the late 13th century, the Old Town was surrounded by walls for protection against Tatar invasions, later reinforced with additional fortifications.

These defenses stood for centuries but were demolished starting in 1807 by the occupying Austrians. Today, only a few sections remain visible.

Planty is a park-like area running along the former city walls, encircling the Old Town.

Its most famous part is the Barbican, a 24-meter diameter fortress built in 1499, a common feature in medieval castles.

There were nine gates into the Old Town, with the most famous being the Florian Gate. The tower, including its helmet-shaped top, measures 34.5 meters in height. Inside the tower is a neoclassical altar from the early 19th century.

Main Square (Rynek Główny)

The square was built in the 13th century and has been the site of many historical events in Poland.

Its large size was intended to provide market space for traders passing through Kraków.

The square’s highlight is the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice), a Renaissance-era trade hall that symbolizes the city. Its upper floor hosts an art gallery founded by the Czartoryski family and belonging to the National Museum. The building also houses the National Cultural Center.

Beneath the square is a vast cellar system, including the Piwnica pod Baranami (Cellar under the Rams), the most famous cellar. The cellars house cafes, restaurants, the Maszkaron Theater, and a small archaeological museum under the St. Adalbert’s Church.

St. Adalbert’s Church

Located in the southeast corner of the Main Square, this church is among Poland’s oldest stone churches.

According to a thousand-year-old legend, St. Adalbert consecrated the church in 997 and prayed here before his missionary journey to Prussia.

Today, the church’s walls are visible down to the lowest levels. The Romanesque entrance and accompanying stone staircase are on the southern side. The church’s crypt has been transformed into a permanent exhibition titled „The History of Kraków’s Market Place.”

St. Mary’s Basilica

Also known as the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, it’s one of Kraków and Poland’s most famous monuments.

This Gothic church was built in the 14th-15th centuries and is located in Kraków’s Main Square, at the northeast corner in Mariacki Square (Plac Mariacki).

It has two towers. The taller, 82-meter high northern tower is called „Trumpeter.” The smaller, 69-meter high southern tower was built for the church’s bell.

The church’s interior is also magnificent. It has five chapels in the northern aisle.

City Arsenal

Located in the northern part of the Old Town, near the Florian Gate.

Originally built as an armory, it now serves as an exhibition site for the Czartoryski Museum.

The exhibition features artifacts from Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan, and Roman cultures. The displayed objects, including mummies, sarcophagi, Etruscan tomb covers, and numerous statues, date from the 3rd millennium BC to the 4th century BC.

Wawel

Situated in the southern part of the Old Town is Wawel Hill, a defining center of Kraków and medieval Poland.

The complex is surrounded by a bastion system and city walls. Most of the buildings and structures were built in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance era, and Wawel was the administrative center of the Polish state in medieval times.

Wawel Cathedral

Also known as the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Stanislaus and Wenceslaus, it is the archiepiscopal cathedral of the Archdiocese of Kraków.

This cathedral is where Polish kings were crowned and is their final resting place. It is dedicated to St. Stanislaus, Poland’s most important national saint, who is entombed here.

The cathedral houses the remains of 19 Polish kings from King Władysław I to King Augustus III. It is still the burial place of Kraków bishops.

Built from brick and white limestone, the cathedral is a three-aisled basilica with a transept, ambulatory, and choir.

It features three towers, with the most famous being the northern Sigismund Tower, home to the renowned Sigismund Bell.

Royal Palace

Part of Wawel, it served as the residence of the monarchs of medieval Poland from 1038 to 1596.

The palace gained its current Renaissance appearance after King Sigismund I rebuilt it following the 1499 fire. After Warsaw became the capital, the palace was only used for coronations and royal funerals.

The palace features a three-level arcaded Renaissance-style courtyard. The second-floor eastern wing of the royal palace retains the original painted friezes depicting Roman emperors.

The palace’s large inner courtyard hosted many balls, ceremonies, receptions, and knightly tournaments in medieval times.

Today, the ground floor of the palace serves as an arms museum. The Sigismund Tower houses the treasury, where the coronation regalia of Polish kings, 14th-18th century jewelry, and ornate swords are kept.

Dragon’s Den

A small limestone cave under Wawel Hill in Kraków, named after the legendary Wawel Dragon.

The cave consists of three chambers and has two entrances, one natural and the other artificial. It extends 276 meters, with a height of about 15 meters. Visitors can go as deep as 81 meters.

In front of the cave entrance stands the statue of the Wawel Dragon.

Kazimierz

Located southeast of Wawel, this district was the Jewish quarter until World War II.

Though severely damaged during the war, Kazimierz still retains its former urban structure.

Several historical buildings remain, primarily well-restored religious institutions – Catholic churches and synagogues.

Several museums operate in the district: the Town Hall in the Market Square houses the ethnographic collection, while the old tram depot hosts a technical exhibition. The Galician Jewish Museum commemorates Poland’s Jewish heritage.

Steven Spielberg filmed several scenes of „Schindler’s List” in this district.

Oskar Schindler’s Factory

Previously mentioned in relation to „Schindler’s List,” Schindler’s factory in the Kazimierz district is now a museum.

Schindler was a businessman who initially provided jobs to Jewish people. During the war, he helped hide them, saving many Jewish lives.

The factory’s exhibition, titled „Kraków under Nazi Occupation 1939-1945,” features 45 exhibition rooms, guiding visitors through various themes, including the war in 1939, the fate of Kraków’s Jews, daily life and family situations during the occupation, the factory and its people, the underground resistance.

Remuh Cemetery (Cmentarz Remuh)

Located in the Kazimierz district, next to the Remu Synagogue, is the old Jewish cemetery.

It includes some of the oldest preserved Jewish tombstones in Poland, used from 1552 to the 1800s.

Kościuszko Mound

Located in the southwest of Kraków, it’s one of the four ancient mounds in the city. Built in honor of Tadeusz Kościuszko on the Blessed Bronisława Hill.

Standing since 1823, the mound is now part of a complex that includes several museums and galleries.

Exhibits include „The Polish Road to Freedom” and „Hungarian Troops on the Eastern Front 1914-1916,” the Kościuszko Museum, as well as remnants of a fortress and citadel from the Austrian occupation.

As the mound is on a hill, it offers a spectacular view of the city, being one of Kraków’s highest points.

Auschwitz

The Polish capital is an increasingly popular European city as Warsaw has a lot to offer tourists in terms of attractions.

Warsaw is located in the central part of the country along the Vistula River. It showcases nearly every European architectural style and era, including Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Classicism.

Attractions in Warsaw

Old Town (Stare Miasto)

The oldest district was almost completely destroyed during World War II but has been fully reconstructed. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Strolling through the quaint streets of this district, you can find many restaurants and bars to experience excellent Polish cuisine.

Most of Warsaw’s attractions are located in the Old Town area.

Barbican

The Old Town is surrounded by a red brick city wall, with a barbican on the western part.

This small fortress-like brick building, built for the main gate’s defense, was constructed at the end of the 16th century by King Sigismund III.

This barbican takes you into the old town

Market Square

The center of the Old Town, it has been a central place for centuries.

It was almost completely destroyed during the 1944 bombings but has been beautifully rebuilt.

The square’s distinctive feature is the Sawa mermaid statue in the middle. The mermaid is the symbol and protector of Warsaw.

The surrounding buildings of various colors are built directly next to each other, almost each with three windows in width.

The central square with the symbol of Warsaw in the middle

Royal Castle

Originally built as a Gothic castle at the beginning of the 15th century, located on the main square.

The Germans blew it up during World War II, and it was rebuilt only decades later. The public first saw the new castle interior in 1984.

Today, the castle is considered a historical and national monument, also functioning as a national museum.

Today it is a museum

Little Insurgent Monument

The statue of a little boy in a combat helmet is located next to the Old Town wall.

It commemorates children who fought during the 1944 uprising. Since 1983, the statue has been one of the main attractions in downtown Warsaw.

In memory of the child victims of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising

Royal Route

Many of Warsaw’s most important attractions are located on Krakowskie Przedmieście, the most important street of the Old Town.

The street is lined with beautiful Classical and Baroque buildings, and it’s worth walking along its length.

Its most famous building is the Presidential Palace, where watching the changing of the guard is highly recommended.

A statue of one of Poland’s most influential kings, Sigismund III, who moved the royal court from Krakow, making Warsaw the new capital in 1596, is also located here.

St. Anne’s Church

This beautiful Baroque church is located opposite the Royal Castle.

The church’s bell tower also serves as an observation deck, offering beautiful views of the city center.

Palace of Culture and Science (PKiN)

Warsaw and Poland’s tallest building was a „gift” from Stalin after World War II.

It was modeled after Moscow’s Seven Sisters, using American skyscraper construction technology, in the socialist-realist architectural style. It’s the only building outside the former Soviet Union built in this form.

Nowadays, it serves office and exhibition functions, but also houses bookstores, museums, cinemas, and a large conference hall.

Poland, due to its history, has many sights to see. Let’s look at the 20 most beautiful places!

The country, located next to Germany, is over a thousand years old and was one of the strongest states in Europe in the 16th century. I It is bordered to the south by the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It is separated from Denmark and Sweden by a maritime border.
Best places in Poland

Krakow

Not surprisingly, the list of beautiful places starts with Krakow, one of the cities with the most beautiful old towns.

Krakow is one of Poland’s most important cultural centers and a major tourist destination in Europe. Its historic Old Town and the Kazimierz district were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1978.

The Old Town is home to Europe’s largest market square and one of Poland’s most famous monuments, St. Mary’s Basilica.

Zakopane

Zakopane is probably a name everyone has heard! It’s the most famous tourist center on the northern side of the Tatra Mountains, particularly popular in winter for its international winter market.

Not just for skiers, Zakopane welcomes hikers and strollers too. You can take a cable car to the 1123-meter-high Gubalowka, making it a sought-after destination in summer too.

The unique Zakopane architectural style deserves a special mention. The buildings are more ornate, a mix of local folk motifs and Art Nouveau.

Warsaw

Poland’s capital, Warsaw, naturally makes the list of beautiful places. Due to its history, almost every European architectural style and period is represented in Warsaw: Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Classicism.

The Old Town was almost completely destroyed during World War II but was successfully rebuilt, now listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. Most of the city’s attractions are located here.

One of the city’s landmarks is the Palace of Culture and Science, built by Stalin and modeled after Moscow’s Seven Sisters. The view from the top offers a panoramic view of Warsaw.

Białowieża Forest

The largest remaining part of the immense deciduous and mixed primeval forest that once covered the European plain is located on the border of Poland and Belarus.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and biosphere reserve, it shelters the world’s largest free-living population of European bison, Europe’s largest land animal.

In the national park, there are also a wildlife park, a natural and forestry museum, a castle park, and designated bison observation areas.

Auschwitz

This place hardly needs an introduction as everyone knows it. The site of the former death camp established during World War II can be visited today.

Located a few kilometers southeast of Krakow, in the town of Wieliczka, are some of Poland’s oldest salt mines, among the world’s oldest rock salt mines.

The mine has nine levels, the first at 64 meters deep and the deepest at 327 meters. The total length of the mines, including connecting corridors, lakes, chambers, shafts, exceeds 300 kilometers. The visitor’s route is about 2 km long and includes 20 chambers.

The mine has a unique microclimate with constant temperature (about 12-14 °C), pressure, ionization, and lighting, alongside high humidity and sodium chloride content.

Malbork Castle

The world’s largest brick castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.

Built by the Teutonic Knights at the end of the 13th century, it gained prominence after 1309. The entire castle was constructed along the Nogat (a tributary of the Vistula), with the castle moat filled with the river’s water, encircling the castle.

The castle is a magnificent sight, especially from the opposite side of the river. It’s worth a detour if you’re heading to Gdansk.

Wroclaw

This southwestern Polish city has been part of several empires, reflected in its architecture.

Much of its architecture was destroyed during World War II, but many buildings were reconstructed in their original form. As a result, we can see the Gothic town hall and cathedral, the Baroque part of the university, and the neo-Gothic main train station.

Wroclaw’s numerous bridges, due to the Oder River and its tributaries, add to the city’s charm.

Biskupin

The ancient Iron Age settlement, which existed approximately between 738 BC and 622 BC, is one of the most important and best-preserved examples of Polish archaeology.

In Biskupin, a waterfront fortified settlement was found, consisting of a wooden settlement surrounded by fortification walls. The houses were built from wooden structures and covered with shingle roofs. The inhabitants of the settlement engaged in agriculture and fishing.

During excavations, numerous artifacts were discovered, including wooden tools, pottery, and various objects related to the settlement’s structure. The inhabitants likely formed a wealthy, well-organized community that was able to survive and develop even during difficult periods. One of the most important discoveries was that the settlement was protected by a moat and a strong wall, which is particularly interesting from the perspective of technology and defense of that era.
