<p><strong>Sofia attracts visitors with its stunning historical heritage. The city uniquely combines ancient monuments with modern urban life.</strong></p>

<p><a href="https://tipsforjourney.com/best-places-in-bulgaria/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bulgaria&#8217;s</a> capital has a history spanning more than two thousand years and is among Europe&#8217;s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Throughout its rich history, the Bulgarian capital has been influenced by Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Slavic cultures, all of which have left their mark on its architecture and culture.</p>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center"><strong>Sofia attractions</strong></h2>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Alexander Nevsky Cathedral</strong></h3>

<p>Sofia&#8217;s most spectacular and significant religious building has become the city&#8217;s symbol over the past century.</p>

<p>The massive Orthodox cathedral was built between 1882 and 1912 in honor of the Russian army that liberated Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. The building was constructed in Neo-Byzantine style and named after Alexander Nevsky, Prince of Novgorod, who is one of Russia&#8217;s most popular saints. The cathedral&#8217;s five golden domes are visible from afar and offer a magical sight, especially at sunset.</p>

<p>The interior is decorated with stunning frescoes and icons. Beneath the crypt is a unique icon museum that houses one of Bulgaria&#8217;s most valuable religious art collections. The cathedral can accommodate up to ten thousand worshippers and is a popular destination for both locals and tourists.</p>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Saint Sofia Church</strong></h3>

<p>The city&#8217;s namesake has been the center of Christian faith in the region since the 6th century.</p>

<p>This historically significant basilica is Sofia&#8217;s oldest surviving church and represents the origin of the city&#8217;s name. The original building was erected during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian, but has been rebuilt several times over the centuries. During the Ottoman conquest, it was converted into a mosque, then regained its original function after liberation.</p>

<p>The interior space, with its narrow, long nave and semicircular apse, shows the classic features of early Christian architecture. Roman-era ruins can be found beneath the church, evoking the city&#8217;s ancient past.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img decoding="async" width="900" height="506" src="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-sofia-church.jpg" alt="The oldest church in Sofia" class="wp-image-6949" srcset="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-sofia-church.jpg 900w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-sofia-church-300x169.jpg 300w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-sofia-church-768x432.jpg 768w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-sofia-church-585x329.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">The oldest church in Sofia</figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>National Palace of Culture</strong></h3>

<p>The central building of Sofia&#8217;s modern cultural life.</p>

<p>The National Palace of Culture, opened in 1981, is one of Southeast Europe&#8217;s largest conference and cultural centers. The palace houses numerous concert halls, exhibition spaces, and conference rooms where classical music concerts, theatrical performances, and international conferences are regularly held.</p>

<p>The palace&#8217;s surroundings are also noteworthy: Bulgaria Square lies in front of it, which is the venue for important social and cultural events. The park in front of the building is decorated with fountains and sculptures, creating the perfect place for walks before or after concerts.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img decoding="async" width="900" height="675" src="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-palace-of-culture.jpg" alt="Main cultural centre" class="wp-image-6950" srcset="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-palace-of-culture.jpg 900w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-palace-of-culture-300x225.jpg 300w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-palace-of-culture-768x576.jpg 768w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-palace-of-culture-585x439.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Main cultural centre</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Vitosha Boulevard</strong></h3>

<p>Sofia&#8217;s main street is one of Bulgaria&#8217;s most elegant pedestrian streets, stretching from Saint Nedelya Church to the National Palace of Culture.</p>

<p>The street is named after the nearby Vitosha Mountains and has been the city&#8217;s most important commercial center since the 19th century. Fashion stores, cafés, restaurants, and bookshops await visitors on the wide sidewalks.</p>

<p>Its special atmosphere lies in successfully combining traditional Bulgarian culture with modern urban life. During the day, business people and tourists walk along the street, while in the evening it becomes a popular meeting place for young people and families.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="675" height="900" src="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-vitosha-boulevard.jpg" alt="Sofia main street" class="wp-image-6951" srcset="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-vitosha-boulevard.jpg 675w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-vitosha-boulevard-225x300.jpg 225w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-vitosha-boulevard-585x780.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Sofia main street</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Banja Bashi Mosque</strong></h3>

<p>Sofia&#8217;s only functioning mosque, which is a beautiful example of Ottoman architecture in the heart of the city.</p>

<p>The 16th-century mosque is among Sofia&#8217;s oldest religious buildings and takes its name from the nearby thermal baths. The mosque is also known as the Hadji Hassan Efendi Mosque, after its builder during Ottoman rule. The building&#8217;s uniqueness lies in the fact that it has continuously served religious functions for five centuries and remains an active prayer house for the city&#8217;s Muslim community.</p>

<p>The mosque&#8217;s architecture follows the classic Ottoman style: it has a central dome and an elegant minaret. The interior space is simple but dignified, with walls decorated with geometric patterns and floors covered with carpets. A small garden surrounds the mosque, where a quiet resting place awaits visitors and worshippers alike.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="598" src="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-Banja-Basi.jpg" alt="The only mosque in the city" class="wp-image-6952" srcset="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-Banja-Basi.jpg 900w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-Banja-Basi-300x199.jpg 300w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-Banja-Basi-768x510.jpg 768w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-Banja-Basi-585x389.jpg 585w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-Banja-Basi-263x175.jpg 263w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">The only mosque in the city</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Borisova Gradina Park</strong></h3>

<p>Sofia&#8217;s largest and most beautiful park.</p>

<p>This vast green area was established in 1884 and named in honor of Tsar Boris III. The park covers more than 300 hectares with lakes and walking paths. During the park&#8217;s design, the famous Swiss landscape architect Daniel Neff worked, combining European and local plants to create a harmonious view.</p>

<p>The park contains numerous sports facilities, including tennis courts, running tracks, and a large stadium. It is particularly beautiful in spring and autumn, when blooming trees and colorful leaves create a wonderful atmosphere.</p>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Saint George Rotunda</strong></h3>

<p>Sofia&#8217;s oldest building has stood in the heart of the city since Roman times.</p>

<p>This circular church was built in the early 4th century and was originally part of a Roman bath complex. The rotunda is Sofia&#8217;s only building that has continuously served religious purposes since Roman times, surviving barbarian attacks, Byzantine rule, and Ottoman conquest.</p>

<p>Inside the church, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman-era layers can be discovered. Among the frescoes decorating the walls are 10th-14th century Byzantine paintings depicting biblical scenes. During the Ottoman period, the rotunda was converted into a mosque, but in the 20th century it was restored and regained its original Christian function.</p>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Zhenski Pazar (Women&#8217;s Market)</strong></h3>

<p>One of Sofia&#8217;s liveliest and most authentic markets.</p>

<p>The name refers to the fact that women traditionally ran this market, and they still maintain this tradition today. The market is located in the city center and has been a shopping destination for locals for decades. Fresh vegetables, fruits, spices, and traditional Bulgarian products are available here, mostly brought by producers from surrounding villages.</p>

<p>Walking among the stalls, visitors can familiarize themselves with the ingredients of Bulgarian cuisine, local cheeses, honey, and homemade jams. In the small restaurants around the market, authentic Bulgarian dishes can be tasted, often prepared from fresh ingredients bought at the market.</p>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Ivan Vazov National Theatre</strong></h3>

<p>Bulgaria&#8217;s most significant theater is the temple of Bulgarian culture and literature.</p>

<p>The neoclassical building, constructed in 1906, was named in honor of poet and writer Ivan Vazov, who was the creator of Bulgaria&#8217;s national literature. The theater&#8217;s facade is decorated with elegant columns and statues depicting muses and famous Bulgarian writers. The building was modeled after the great theaters of <a href="https://tipsforjourney.com/vienna-attractions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vienna</a> and <a href="https://tipsforjourney.com/paris-attractions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Paris</a> and is one of Sofia&#8217;s most beautiful architectural creations.</p>

<p>The theater&#8217;s interior is particularly stunning: gilded decorations, crystal chandeliers, and velvet seats create a festive atmosphere. The National Theatre&#8217;s repertoire includes both classical and modern plays, and regularly hosts foreign companies as well.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="597" src="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-ivan-vazov-theatre.jpg" alt="Named after a famous Bulgarian writer" class="wp-image-6953" srcset="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-ivan-vazov-theatre.jpg 900w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-ivan-vazov-theatre-300x199.jpg 300w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-ivan-vazov-theatre-768x509.jpg 768w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-ivan-vazov-theatre-780x516.jpg 780w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-ivan-vazov-theatre-585x388.jpg 585w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/tipsforjourney-sofia-attractions-ivan-vazov-theatre-263x175.jpg 263w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Named after a famous Bulgarian writer</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Sofia Synagogue</strong></h3>

<p>The largest synagogue on the Balkan Peninsula is a proud monument to Sofia&#8217;s Jewish community.</p>

<p>The synagogue, consecrated in 1909, was built in Sephardic style. The building&#8217;s Moorish-Byzantine architecture is unique in Bulgaria, particularly its colorful dome and detailed ornamentation make it remarkable.</p>

<p>The interior&#8217;s stunning decoration includes traditional Jewish symbols and local artistic elements. The dome above the main altar is particularly beautiful, with its gold and blue colors and the Star of David contained within. The synagogue&#8217;s historical significance is particularly important, as Bulgaria saved its Jewish population from deportation during World War II.</p>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Boyana Church</strong></h3>

<p>The medieval church, part of the UNESCO World Heritage, is located in Sofia&#8217;s suburbs.</p>

<p>The church, built in the 10th-11th centuries, is situated at the foot of the Vitosha Mountains and represents three construction periods. The original small church was expanded in the 13th century, then another section was added in the 19th century. The church is world-famous for its 13th-century frescoes, which are masterpieces of early Renaissance painting and predate Giotto&#8217;s work.</p>

<p>The uniqueness of the frescoes lies in their extremely realistic depiction of saints and biblical figures, which was a revolutionary innovation in Byzantine art at the time. Among the paintings are portraits of Jesus, Mary, and numerous saints, as well as depictions of the church&#8217;s founders, Despot Kaloyan and his wife.</p>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Saint Nedelya Church</strong></h3>

<p>The main church standing in Sofia&#8217;s city center is one of the most important sanctuaries of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.</p>

<p>The church, founded in the 10th century, has burned down and been rebuilt several times, receiving its current form during 19th-20th century reconstruction. The church&#8217;s namesake is Saint Nedelya, a local martyr, in whose honor a sanctuary was erected at this site in the Middle Ages.</p>

<p>Its interior boasts rich iconostasis and valuable frescoes that are among the finest examples of Bulgarian Orthodox art. The sanctuary behind the main altar houses numerous relics, including the relics of Saint Nedelya. It hosts many important ceremonies of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and plays a central role during national holidays.</p>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Bulgarian National History Museum</strong></h3>

<p>Bulgaria&#8217;s largest and most significant historical collection is located in the Boyana district.</p>

<p>The museum opened in 1973 and now preserves more than 650,000 objects from Thracian times to the present day. The collection showcases Bulgaria&#8217;s rich history, including Thracian gold treasures, Roman findings, medieval manuscripts, and folk art creations. The museum building was originally the residence of communist leader Todor Zhivkov, which gives a special atmosphere to the historical exhibition.</p>

<p>Among the museum&#8217;s most valuable pieces are the replica of the Kazanlak Thracian tomb and the Nagyszentmiklós treasure. The exhibition presents the country&#8217;s development in chronological order, paying special attention to the establishment of the Bulgarian state and the formation of national identity.</p>

<p>All information can be found <a href="https://historymuseum.org/?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">here</a>!</p>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>National Art Gallery</strong></h3>

<p>Bulgaria&#8217;s largest fine arts collection is housed in the museum.</p>

<p>The gallery is housed in the former royal palace, which is itself an architectural masterpiece. The museum, opened in 1934, presents the complete spectrum of Bulgarian fine arts from the 19th century to the present day. The collection includes works by the most significant Bulgarian painters, including Vladimir Dimitrov-Majstora, Ivan Milev, and Zlatyu Boyadzhiev.</p>

<p>In addition to its permanent exhibition, it regularly organizes temporary exhibitions showcasing the latest trends in contemporary Bulgarian art. The paintings and sculptures displayed in the palace&#8217;s ceremonial halls are particularly effective in the historical setting.</p>

<p>All information can be found <a href="https://nationalgallery.bg/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">here</a>!</p>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Vitosha Mountain</strong></h3>

<p>The mountain rising at Sofia&#8217;s border attracts nature lovers year-round.</p>

<p>The nearly 2,300-meter-high mountain range is located just 30 kilometers from the city and is a popular hiking destination for locals and tourists alike. Vitosha has national park status and is a protected area due to its rich flora and fauna. The mountain&#8217;s uniqueness lies in the fact that while excellent ski slopes await winter sports enthusiasts in winter, numerous hiking trails offer opportunities for nature walking in summer.</p>

<p>Cable cars from the Dragalevtsi and Simeonovo neighborhoods in the mountain lead up to higher regions, from where breathtaking panoramas open up over Sofia and the surrounding landscape. Vitosha&#8217;s highest point, Cherni Vrh (Black Peak), is a popular hiking destination that experienced mountaineers also like to visit.</p>

<p><strong>Bulgaria is best known for Sunny Beach, but there are several other great attractions in the country worth visiting.</strong></p>

<p>It is bordered by Romania to the north, <a href="https://tipsforjourney.com/best-places-in-serbia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Serbia</a> and <a href="https://tipsforjourney.com/best-places-in-north-macedonia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">North Macedonia</a> to the west, <a href="https://tipsforjourney.com/best-places-in-greece/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greece</a> and <a href="https://tipsforjourney.com/best-places-in-turkey/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Turkey</a> to the south, and the Black Sea to the east.</p>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Sunny Beach</strong></h3>

<p>Bulgaria&#8217;s most famous place, attracting more and more tourists year after year.</p>

<p>The Sunny Beach area refers to the bay between Nessebar and Sveti Vlas. Along the approximately 8 km long, Blue Flag certified beach, there are countless restaurants, hotels, bars, discos, and nightclubs, often referred to as the new Ibiza.</p>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Sozopol</strong></h3>

<p>Located not far from Burgas, this settlement, along with Nessebar, is one of the oldest cities in Bulgaria.</p>

<p>It emerged from the Greek city-state of Apollonia and was a thriving trading city from ancient times until the 17th century. It was known as a <a href="https://tipsforjourney.com/where-to-travel-for-really-good-wine/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wine-producing</a> and fishing town and was an important port for the transshipment of grain from Thrace. From ancient times until the first quarter of the 20th century, Sozopol was a predominantly Greek-populated city.</p>

<p>It is characterized by 19th-century Bulgarian-style houses. The old houses built of wood and stone may be included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in the future.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s also an excellent seaside resort with beautiful sandy beaches and crystal-clear water. The city&#8217;s two main beaches are Central Beach and Harmanite Beach, popular among families and water sports enthusiasts alike.</p>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Sofia</strong></h3>

<p>Bulgaria&#8217;s capital is located in the western part of the country and is considered Europe&#8217;s oldest capital.</p>

<p>Its most famous attraction is the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, one of Sofia&#8217;s symbols. Built in Neo-Byzantine style, the cathedral is the seat of the Bulgarian Patriarch and one of the largest Eastern Orthodox churches.</p>

<p>Among the religious buildings, the central synagogue must be mentioned. It&#8217;s the second-largest Sephardic synagogue in Europe and the largest such religious facility on the Balkan Peninsula. Two permanent exhibitions can be seen: one showcasing the life of the Bulgarian Jewish community, and the other focusing on the Holocaust.</p>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Tsarevets Fortress</strong></h3>

<p>Located in the city of Veliko Tarnovo, it was one of the most significant fortifications as the capital of the medieval Second Bulgarian Empire.</p>

<p>The fortress was built on a high hill, which provided natural protection along with the city below and the Yantra River. It was surrounded by thick stone walls stretching for three kilometers. The walls contained several gates and towers.</p>

<p>Inside the fortress stood the Bulgarian Tsar&#8217;s residence, where the imperial government ruled the country. At its top is the former Patriarchal Cathedral, which was the center of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. The cathedral also functioned as the religious center of the empire.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="675" src="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Tsarevets-fortress.jpg" alt="The most important fortress in medieval Bulgaria" class="wp-image-3885" srcset="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Tsarevets-fortress.jpg 900w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Tsarevets-fortress-300x225.jpg 300w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Tsarevets-fortress-768x576.jpg 768w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Tsarevets-fortress-585x439.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">The most important fortress in medieval Bulgaria</figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Plovdiv</strong></h3>

<p>Bulgaria&#8217;s second-largest city is located in the central part of the country, on both banks of the Maritsa River.</p>

<p>The old town, built on hills with renovated pedestrian streets, is famous for its buildings in the so-called Bulgarian Renaissance style. These houses, partly built of wood, are meant to symbolize Bulgarian self-awareness. The colors and protruding balconies are also eye-catching: based on the richness of the interiors, decorations, valuable furniture, carpets, and frescoes, the owners of the houses were wealthy merchants of the 19th century.</p>

<p>Plovdiv&#8217;s emblematic monument is the amphitheater and ancient theater, the largest outdoor Roman facility in present-day Bulgaria. Its construction began in the 2nd century during the reign of Emperor Trajan. It&#8217;s a masterpiece of Roman architecture.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="506" src="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Plovdiv.jpg" alt="There is also a Roman amphitheatre here" class="wp-image-3886" srcset="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Plovdiv.jpg 900w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Plovdiv-300x169.jpg 300w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Plovdiv-768x432.jpg 768w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Plovdiv-585x329.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">There is also a Roman amphitheatre here</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Rila Monastery</strong></h3>

<p>It&#8217;s the most popular and considered the holiest shrine of Bulgaria and the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. The monastery in the Rila Mountains is surrounded by picturesque forests.</p>

<p>Its history began in the 10th century when St. John of Rila, the patron saint of Bulgarians, retreated to hermitage in the area, and after his death, his followers founded a monastery. It became a cultural center during the Turkish era. In 1976, it was declared a national historical site, and in 1983, UNESCO added it to the <a href="https://tipsforjourney.com/best-world-heritage-sites-in-europe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">World Heritage List</a>.</p>

<p>The four-story monastery buildings contain about 300 monastic cells. A real specialty is the huge, octagonal kitchen in the northern wing of the monastery, which has a ceiling height of 22 meters.</p>

<p>One of the pride of the museum in the southern wing is the intricately carved 14th-century door of the Hrelja Church, as well as the Raphael Cross. The latter is named after Brother Raphael from the 18th century, who carved about 104 religious scenes and 650 miniature figures on the wooden cross measuring only 81 x 23 cm over 12 years of persistent work.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Varna</strong></h3>

<p>Bulgaria&#8217;s third-largest city is located on the Black Sea coast. It&#8217;s an important tourist destination, commercial and cultural center.</p>

<p>Its most spectacular monument is the Orthodox cathedral, whose predecessor was built in the 15th century and expanded in the 17th century. In Dzharnavara Park, there are also ruins of an ancient basilica.</p>

<p>Varna&#8217;s museums are also famous. These include the Varna Archaeological Museum, the aquarium, and the dolphinarium established in 1984, which was the largest in the world when it was built. On the outskirts of the city stands the memorial park of the Battle of Varna.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s worth visiting the Euxinograd Palace, 8 km away. The late 19th-century building&#8217;s style evokes the atmosphere of <a href="https://tipsforjourney.com/best-places-in-france/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">French</a> castles. United Bulgaria was proclaimed here in 1885.</p>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Belogradchik Rocks</strong></h3>

<p>This wonderful natural formation is located in northwestern Bulgaria, near the town of Belogradchik.</p>

<p>They are about 200 million years old formations consisting of sandstone, conglomerate, and limestone. Over millions of years, erosion and natural forces have created special shapes that have been given names. These include the &#8222;Horseman&#8221;, the &#8222;Monks&#8221;, and the &#8222;Bear&#8221;.</p>

<p>The reddish color of the rocks, their shapes, and the surrounding green forests, as well as the Balkan Mountains in the background, create a wonderful landscape.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="506" src="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Belogradchik.jpg" alt="Its shape and the beauty of the landscape attract many visitors" class="wp-image-3889" srcset="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Belogradchik.jpg 900w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Belogradchik-300x169.jpg 300w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Belogradchik-768x432.jpg 768w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Belogradchik-585x329.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Its shape and the beauty of the landscape attract many visitors</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Perperikon</strong></h3>

<p>The archaeological site is one of the most significant historical monuments in the region.</p>

<p>Perperikon has been inhabited for thousands of years. Its oldest parts date back to the Bronze Age and served as a religious and cultural center for the Thracians.</p>

<p>The excavated structures include ancient palaces, water reservoirs, and a large temple built after the spread of Christianity. Many important objects have been found during excavations, including ceramics, coins, weapons, and other antiquities.</p>

<p>Its most famous part is a large sanctuary carved into a rock, which is the largest such structure in the region. The altar, used by the Thracians for their religious ceremonies, was particularly famous for stories related to prophecies.</p>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Ovech Fortress</strong></h3>

<p>The fortress near the town of Provadia has a history spanning more than a millennium. It played an important role for various civilizations as a military and administrative center.</p>

<p>It stands on a rocky plateau surrounded by steep walls. The fortress&#8217;s strategic importance stems from its easy defensibility and its view of the surrounding areas, including the Provadia Valley.</p>

<p>The fortress was first used by the Thracians, then later occupied by the Romans, Byzantines, and medieval Bulgarian states. In the 11th century, it became one of the important military centers of the Byzantine Empire. Later, in the 13-14th centuries, it gained new significance during the Second Bulgarian Empire.</p>

<p>One of the most spectacular elements leading to the fortress is a long bridge built on rock and a staircase carved into stone, which was one of its most important entrances.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="506" src="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-ovech.jpg" alt="Accessed by a long bridge" class="wp-image-3890" srcset="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-ovech.jpg 900w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-ovech-300x169.jpg 300w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-ovech-768x432.jpg 768w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-ovech-585x329.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Accessed by a long bridge</figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Prohodna Cave</strong></h3>

<p>The cave located in the gorge of the Iskar River is popular among hikers, cavers, and tourists due to its special formations.</p>

<p>The cave got its name from its two large natural openings that create a long, tunnel-like passage, as if we were walking through a &#8222;corridor&#8221;. One opening is called the Small Entrance, and the other is called the Large Entrance. The total length of the cave is about 262 meters.</p>

<p>Its most famous and special part is two huge natural windows on the cave&#8217;s ceiling, which locals call &#8222;The Eyes of God&#8221;. These holes are positioned as if forming the eyes of a giant face, especially when sunlight filters through them.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="604" src="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Prohodna-cave.jpg" alt="Like two eyes" class="wp-image-3891" style="width:780px;height:auto" srcset="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Prohodna-cave.jpg 900w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Prohodna-cave-300x201.jpg 300w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Prohodna-cave-768x515.jpg 768w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Prohodna-cave-585x393.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Like two eyes</figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Etar</strong></h3>

<p>The open-air ethnographic museum aims to showcase Bulgarian folk culture, craftsmanship, and lifestyle, especially from the period of the Bulgarian Revival in the 18th-19th centuries.</p>

<p>There are more than 50 buildings, including residential houses, workshops, and water mills. The buildings follow the 18th-19th century Bulgarian architectural style, characterized by houses made of wood and stone, as well as the rich decorations of the Bulgarian Revival period.</p>

<p>The most popular attractions of the museum are the craft workshops. These faithfully demonstrate the crafts of the era, such as pottery, woodcarving, blacksmithing, weaving, cloth making, silversmithing, and bread baking.</p>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Bansko</strong></h3>

<p>One of the country&#8217;s most popular winter resorts is located near Pirin National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.</p>

<p>Its ski center is one of the most modern and well-equipped winter resorts in Southeast Europe. The ski area is over 70 kilometers long in total, with the highest slopes located at an altitude of 2600 meters.</p>

<p>Bansko is not just about skiing, but also has a rich historical past. The city was one of the important centers of culture and economy during the Bulgarian Revival period. It&#8217;s famous for traditional Bulgarian folk music and folklore festivals.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="506" src="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Bansko.jpg" alt="Bulgaria ski resort" class="wp-image-3892" srcset="https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Bansko.jpg 900w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Bansko-300x169.jpg 300w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Bansko-768x432.jpg 768w, https://tipsforjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tipsforjourney-best-places-in-bulgaria-Bansko-585x329.jpg 585w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Bulgaria ski resort</figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Bezbog Lake</strong></h3>
