Dunrobin Castle

Located north of Inverness on the east coast, in Golspie.

Its first mention dates back to 1401 as the residence of the Earls of Sutherland. Over the centuries, it has been expanded and remodeled multiple times. Its current L-shaped complex emerged in the 17th century.

The magnificent French garden, modeled after Versailles, was created in the mid-19th century by Charles Barry, the architect of the Westminster Parliament.

Drummond Castle

The castle is most famous for its garden, known as „the best example of terraced gardens in Scotland”. It is situated on a part of the rocky ridge known as Gask Ridge.

The castle consists of a tower house built at the end of the 15th century and a villa built in the 17th century, both of which were remodeled in Victorian times.

The garden was created in 1630 and rebuilt in the 19th century.

Balmoral Castle

Located along the River Dee, in the area known as Royal Deeside, within Cairngorms National Park.

The estate was purchased in 1852 by Queen Victoria and her consort, Prince Albert, and remains the favorite summer residence of the royal family to this day.

The prince immediately began planning the expansion of the castle and the construction of a new, larger castle suitable for the royal family. The new castle, built about 100 meters from the old one, was completed in 1856. The old building was then demolished.

Today, it is open to visitors continuously from April to July, until the beginning of the queen’s annual visit. Of the interior spaces, only the ballroom is open to the public.

Glamis Castle

One of the easternmost castles in Scotland. This building is the residence of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne.

The castle has been the property of the Lyon clan since the 14th century, but it only gained its current form in the 17th century. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, the mother of Queen Elizabeth II, spent her childhood here.

The castle is known as one of the most haunted places in the world. It is said to contain a walled-in monster within its walls. According to legend, it was a deformed child of the residing family, who was kept confined within the castle walls all his life and then walled in after death.

Culzean Castle

Near the town of Maybole, on Scotland’s Ayrshire coast, the castle is built atop a cliff. Previously inhabited by Scottish nobles, the Earls of Ailsa from the Kennedy clan.

The L-shaped Culzean Castle was built at the end of the 18th century for David Kennedy, the 10th Earl of Cassilis. It also has a beautiful 500-hectare park.

Its main attraction is the oval staircase with a glass roof in the center of the building and the semi-circular, sea-facing salon that opens from it.

One of its rooms was made available to General Dwight Eisenhower during World War II, which now houses an exhibition about his life.

The castle’s image adorns the back of the five-pound note.

Inveraray Castle

Located in western Scotland on the shores of Loch Fyne, it has been owned since the 17th century by the Duke of Argyll, head of the Campbell clan. It is also referred to as one of Scotland’s most beautiful castles.

There has been a ducal residence on the site since the 15th century, but the current baroque-gothic castle was built in the 17th century and reached its final form at the end of the 19th century.

Its most famous part is the armory, which is 21 meters high. The displayed weapons showcase the history of Scotland and the Campbell clan.

Kilchurn Castle

Located not far north of Inveraray Castle, at the northern tip of Loch Awe, it is a popular photography site due to its location and surroundings.

First built in the mid-15th century by the Campbell clan, who expanded the castle and their domain over the next 150 years. It was then transformed into a fortress, and by the end of the 1700s, the site was abandoned.

Dunvegan Castle

Scotland’s oldest continuously inhabited castle, which is the ancestral home of the famous MacLeods.

One of its features is the Fairy Flag, an ancient family heirloom. When unfurled, it helps the family thrice: its magic repels enemies, staves off famine, and brings fertility.

The 14th-century castle has exhibitions, and outside, a large garden offers a beautiful view of the sea, from where seal-watching trips are also organized.

Kelburn Castle

Located 35 km west of Glasgow near the seaside town of Fairlie, this colorful castle has been owned by the Boyle family since its construction in the 18th century.

The reason I say colorful is that in 2007, the owner decided to paint the walls in colors at the suggestion of his children. Various patterns and fairy-tale figures were thus painted on the walls.

Unfortunately, the office dealing with monuments only temporarily authorized this, so it’s uncertain how long the castle can be seen in this form.

The most beautiful fortresses in Scotland

Stirling Castle

Located in the city of Stirling, this castle is one of the largest and most architecturally and historically significant in Scotland.

The castle’s foundation was built in the 14th century, but the main buildings are from the 15th and 16th centuries. Several Scottish kings and queens were crowned within its walls.

In the southern part of the upper courtyard is the palace block. Its construction was started by James IV but is actually associated with James V. It features both Renaissance and late Gothic architecture. It is considered one of the most impressive Scottish buildings.

Eilean Donan Castle

The castle is built on an island in Loch Duich in the western part of the Scottish Highlands.

It serves as the headquarters of the Scottish MacRae clan. The name literally means „Island of Donan” and is named after a 6th-century hermit.

The castle was built in 1220 by King Alexander II of Scotland and was completely destroyed by an English fleet in 1719. It was rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century.

Today, the castle houses a museum. One of its interesting features is that its former kitchen is set up with characteristic sounds to create the impression that food is being prepared for the lord.

The castle can only be approached on foot, via a stone bridge.

Urquhart Castle

The castle is located next to Loch Ness, along the A82 main road, between Fort William and Inverness.

It was one of medieval Scotland’s largest strongholds. Unfortunately, it is quite dilapidated, but still impressive as it majestically sprawls atop a hill.

The walled part of the castle resembles a horizontal figure eight, oriented northeast to southwest. Although no upper level remains intact, the positions of the supporting beams can be seen in the stone walls, illustrating the construction methods of the time.

The visitor center features an exhibition about the castle’s history, including several medieval relics.

Dunnottar Castle

A ruined, medieval fortress situated on a steep, rocky promontory on the northeastern coastline of Scotland.

While the current castle ruins date back to the 15th and 16th centuries, a fortification existed here in the early medieval period. The ruins rise about 50 meters above sea level.

Dunnottar played a significant strategic role in Scottish history from the Middle Ages until the Enlightenment. Its location allowed for monitoring ships heading towards North Scotland and controlling land traffic.

The castle can be accessed via two footpaths. One is an 800-meter, partially steep footpath, equipped with some newly built stairs, connecting it to a car park along the coastal road (which joins the A92 main road). The other is a 3-kilometer tourist path originating from behind the harbor in Stonehaven, heading south along the cliff top to the castle. This path is quite narrow and steep in places but offers beautiful sea views.

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle, an ancient fortress, sits atop a volcanic rock peak. It’s located at the upper end of the famous Royal Mile street in the western part of Edinburgh’s old town.

A royal castle has stood here since the 12th century, participating in numerous historical conflicts as one of the most important strongholds of the Kingdom of Scotland.

Most of the current buildings date from after the 16th century, with the notable exception of St. Margaret’s Chapel. This is Edinburgh’s oldest surviving building, constructed in the early 12th century.

Other notable structures include the royal palace and the 15th-century Great Hall. The castle also houses the Scottish National War Memorial and the National War Museum of Scotland.

It is the annual venue for the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a military band festival that has become a symbol of Edinburgh and indeed all of Scotland.

Glasgow is the third most populous city in the United Kingdom. Its name in Gaelic means “green place”. Located along the River Clyde, in the central-western part of the Scottish Lowlands, it is 75 km west of Edinburgh.

Attractions in Glasgow

Glasgow Cathedral

The seat of the Archbishop of Glasgow, it is the oldest cathedral on the Scottish mainland and Glasgow’s oldest building.

Dedicated to Saint Mungo, Glasgow’s patron saint, whose tomb is in the middle of the lower church, the cathedral was built in the 12th century. Although beautiful inside and out, it is considered “average” among the famous cathedrals.

Admission is free, but it is advisable to book in advance! (You need to reserve a specific time slot.)

Necropolis

Next to the cathedral, on a hill, lies a bizarre yet beautiful place: a Victorian cemetery where wealthy Glaswegians were buried in the past.

There are many interesting and beautiful graves, offering a nice view of the city. The hill can be accessed via the Bridge of Sighs next to the cathedral.

George Square

Glasgow’s main square, named after King George III, is adorned with statues of famous Scottish people.

In the center stands the Sir Walter Scott memorial, and on the east side is the impressive City Hall.

Buchanan Street

Close to George Square, running north-south, is Glasgow’s main shopping street.

The nearly 1 km long street between St Enoch Square and The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall is lined with elegant shops, restaurants, and bars.

Kelvingrove Park

This 34-hectare park west of the city center offers tranquility.

The park features playgrounds, a lake, a music pavilion, statues, and a fountain. It is Glasgow’s most important public park.

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum

Located in the southwestern part of Kelvingrove Park, this is not only one of Glasgow’s, but also Scotland’s most popular attractions.

The museum’s collections mainly come from the original Kelvingrove Museum and the McLellan Galleries. It boasts one of the world’s most beautiful collections of arms and armor, as well as a vast natural history collection. The collection includes many outstanding European artworks, the most famous being Salvador Dalí’s Christ of Saint John of the Cross.

University of Glasgow

Founded in 1451, the university has produced and employed world-famous scholars. Visitors can explore its campus.

The main building houses the Hunterian Museum, which, in addition to significant ancient artifacts, displays items and original inventions of Lord Kelvin. The museum is free to visit.

The Lighthouse

Located in a street parallel to Buchanan Street, this famous exhibition space designed by Rennie Mackintosh showcases architecture, applied arts, and city history.

Visitors can climb a spiral staircase to the top of the building’s tower for a beautiful view of the city center.

Riverside Museum

Situated along the River Clyde, this building houses Glasgow’s transport museum, which many consider one of the best in the world.

Primarily showcasing the city’s transport history, it features numerous vehicles and interactive exhibits. A ship is also visitable in front of the building.

Glasgow Science Centre

Almost opposite the Riverside Museum, on the other side of the River Clyde, is a museum perfect for children.

It is actually a science and technology museum consisting of three main buildings: the Science Mall, Glasgow Tower, and an IMAX cinema. Many interactive exhibitions make it an enjoyable experience for children.

The Tenement House

At 145 Buccleuch Street, this property is an apartment in a tenement house built in 1892, preserved in its early 20th-century condition.

The apartment was owned by Agnes Toward from 1911 to 1965, and after her death, an organization turned it into a museum. Visitors can see a close-to-original representation of how local residents lived at that time.

Kibble Palace and Glasgow Botanic Gardens

Along the River Kelvin, this 1000 sqm park features several greenhouses and is home to many beautiful plants.

Kibble Palace is a 19th-century wrought iron-framed greenhouse, primarily housing New Zealand and Australian ferns. The park is also inhabited by many tame squirrels, which can be fed.

People’s Palace

Located in Glasgow Green park, this museum and greenhouse showcases Glasgow’s industrial past and local dialect through exhibitions.

The museum hosts a collection of artifacts, photographs, prints, and films that depict how Glaswegians lived and worked in the past.

In front of the building is the beautiful Doulton Fountain.

In early April, I saw a 40 euro round-trip ticket to Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh, on Wizz Air and booked it right away. The flight was scheduled to leave on Thursday evening and return on Saturday night, allowing for two full days. Since the attractions in both Edinburgh and Glasgow are fairly concentrated, I allocated one day for each city.

As of March 18, the UK had lifted all COVID-related restrictions, making travel to Scotland hassle-free for Hungarian citizens. Mask wearing was no longer required, although it was mandatory on the Wizz Air flight back home (I don’t understand why, as it wasn’t needed on the way there).

Edinburgh

I stayed in a hostel, starting my long day at 8:45 AM on Friday. Those who can handle a lot of walking can explore the city on foot. Expect to walk well over 10 km, but with so many attractions, you often only need to cover a few hundred meters at a time.

The weather was overcast and windy all day, but we are in the UK, where this is no surprise…

The starting point was the Holyroodhouse Palace, which I could only view from the outside in the morning.

Opposite it is the parliament building, which doesn’t look like what it actually is. It’s a modern building along a street with just a few security guards lounging around. But Scotland is a peaceful country; there’s nothing for the rulers to fear…

From there, I climbed up to Calton Hill, which has several monuments and a stunning view. It’s home to Scotland’s national monument, the Nelson Monument, the Dugald Stewart Monument, and a gallery. It’s worth spending some time at the base, enjoying the panorama from the sea to the city center.

Continuing west on Princess Street, the Scott Monument is visible from afar. You can climb up the Gothic tower. I didn’t go in, as the views from Calton Hill and the castle can’t be surpassed.

Not far away, the national gallery opens at 10 AM, a must-visit for art enthusiasts. But the good news for everyone is that it’s free, so I also took a round.

In the large garden along the way, I checked out the Ross Fountain, which offers a great view of the castle soaring above the rock.

Dean Village is just a 10-minute walk away. This one or two-street area evokes old Edinburgh. Along the stream, you find real tranquility, and the beautiful buildings along the stream offer a lovely view.

I continued west along the Leith stream to visit the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, also free. Well, there are some interesting exhibits here, that’s for sure. 🙂

Then I headed downtown, but on the way, it’s mandatory to check out St Mary’s Cathedral, both inside and out. And entry is free here too!

The southern part of the castle was my next target. Through Grassmarket, I went to the National Museum. Now, this was exactly to my taste.

In Scotland, several cemeteries are tourist attractions. In Edinburgh, this is Greyfriars Kirkyard, where you can peacefully walk and take photos among the grave markers.

I saved the Royal Mile, the main street, for last, with the castle rising at its western end. On the street, you can also freely visit St Giles’ Cathedral, but there are other possible activities (e.g., an optical illusion museum, whisky tour).

The view from the castle over the city is beautiful. Unfortunately, the northern part was not visible due to renovation. I didn’t go inside the castle, as I had enough cultural shock for one day, and this was plenty for Friday.

I enjoy evening walks, so I wandered around downtown even after dark. The Royal Mile was almost empty, much more relaxed than the daytime crowd. And you must see the illuminated castle from below!

Glasgow

Early Saturday morning, I checked out of my accommodation and took the 7:30 AM bus to Glasgow. The journey took 80 minutes, and I bought the ticket online for 3.50 GBP.

In Glasgow too, I explored the city on foot, using the subway just once. There’s a circular route that operates in both directions, covering most major attractions, so you can replace part of the walk with it.

Starting from Buchanan bus station, I headed west. First, I visited the University of Glasgow, passing through Kelvingrove Park. The building itself is beautiful, and so is the Hunterian Museum inside it, offering free exhibitions on various topics.

Next, I went to the Kelvingrove Museum, which is also free to enter. It’s a high-quality museum, covering everything from different cultures to natural sciences. I spent a bit less time there due to a fire alarm that required evacuating the building, but I managed to see most of it.

Then came the Riverside Museum along the Clyde River. Needless to say, it’s also free! I particularly enjoy transportation museums, and this one is top-notch. One of the best features is an old-style street section, giving a lifelike impression in semi-darkness. On the riverside, you can also explore a sailing ship.

There, I tried a Scottish Square Sausage dish. It’s a square meat patty in a bun-like pastry. As they say, it was okay, but I prefer our local sausages. 😊

I walked to the nearby Partick subway station and took the subway to St Enoch station. Walking along the river, I reached Glasgow Green park, where attractions include the McLennan Arch, the Nelson Monument, and the People’s Palace. The latter is a small exhibition showcasing the city’s old life (also free).

In brilliant weather, I visited the Necropolis, a Victorian cemetery on a hill. Many tourists were with me, enjoying the beautiful view and good weather, and the extraordinary attraction!

At the base of the cemetery hill stands the cathedral. Supposedly, you need to book online for entry, but they let everyone in. Inside, it’s more modest than previous churches I visited, but it’s much more imposing from the outside.

Next, I headed to George Square, where Celtic football team fans were celebrating their league title. The square features several statues and the central Scott Monument.

The last stop of the day was Buchanan Street, the main street. It was Saturday and the weather was nice, so naturally, it was crowded. I sat on a bench and listened to the indispensable sound of the Scottish bagpipes.

My bus to the airport left at 6:15 PM, and I flew back with Wizz Air’s flight at 10:15 PM.

Summary

In two days, I managed to explore two great but distinct cities. Edinburgh represents the old times, while Glasgow more so the modern era. I found the old-style houses very beautiful.

A bonus is that most museums are free and of high quality. I visited almost all of them, even if I didn’t spend much time in some.

More days could easily be devoted to both cities, but I managed it with a quick trip. I can only encourage everyone to plan a trip here; you won’t regret it!

Located on the eastern coast of the Southern Scottish Highlands, Edinburgh sits on the southern part of the delta mouth of the Forth River. Its port is Leith. The city, founded in 626 by Edwin of Northumbria, sprawls over a volcanic terrain and became the capital of Scotland in the 15th century.

The backbone of Edinburgh’s vibrant cultural life is its nearly year-round continuous festivals, among which the Edinburgh Festival held every August, and the closely associated The Fringe, the world’s largest international arts festival, stand out.

Attractions in Edinburgh

Edinburgh Castle

Perched atop a volcanic rock peak, the castle is an ancient fortress that served as a royal residence for several centuries. Located at the upper end of the famous Royal Mile street, in the western part of Edinburgh’s Old Town, it’s a must-visit for its spectacular city views.

Having served defensive purposes, the castle houses numerous military facilities. Its most famous parts include the Crown Square (where the royal palace stands), the Portcullis Gate, the Argyle Tower, St. Margaret’s Chapel, and the Mons Meg siege cannon.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a military band festival that has become a symbol of Edinburgh and all of Scotland, is held here annually.

Royal Mile

The main street of Edinburgh, with the castle at its western end. Its length is approximately one Scottish mile (about 1.6 km).

Today, the Royal Mile is an eclectic mix of gift shops, restaurants, pubs, historical attractions, and is also the main venue for the Edinburgh Festival.

St Giles’ Cathedral

Located on the Royal Mile, this Gothic church hosted the first parliament of Mary, Queen of Scots.

Throughout its history, it has been destroyed by siege, fire, and expanded or rebuilt several times, with significant alterations made between 1829 and 1832.

The Thistle Chapel, built within in 1911, is one of the most beautiful chapels in Scotland, adorned with flags depicting the crests of the Knights of the Thistle Order.

The Real Mary King’s Close

Below Edinburgh lies an extensive labyrinth, parts of which are open to visitors.

Guided tours are led by costumed guides who share many stories and legends. It’s definitely worth booking tickets in advance!

Holyroodhouse Palace

At the end of Canongate Street, an extension of the Royal Mile, stands the baroque-style royal palace, which served as the residence of Mary, Queen of Scots.

Originally built in 1128 by David I as Holyrood Abbey, the ruins of the abbey can be seen on the northeast side of the building. Today, it is the official residence of the Queen of Scotland, as well as the venue for receptions and state ceremonies. The building also houses The Queen’s Gallery.

Scottish Parliament

Located opposite Holyroodhouse Palace, this building won the Building of the Year award in 2005.

Constructed using metal, oak, and granite with innovative architectural solutions, the design was inspired by the surrounding landscape, resembling flowers and an inverted boat.

The National Monument

Inaugurated in 1822 atop Calton Hill, based on the designs of Playfair and Robert Cockerell, it commemorates Scottish soldiers who died in the Napoleonic Wars.

Originally intended to be an exact replica of the Parthenon, funding ran out, so only a fraction was completed. Locals refer to the monument as „Edinburgh’s Disgrace”.

Nelson Monument

Adjacent to The National Monument is the memorial for Admiral Lord Nelson, built between 1807 and 1815 based on Robert Burn’s designs.

The 33-meter-high round tower is accessible by 143 steps, offering a panoramic view up to the estuary of the River Forth.

Scott Monument

This Gothic structure on Princes Street commemorates Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott and is the world’s second-largest writer’s monument after Havana’s José Martí Memorial.

The 61-meter-tall tower has several observation decks, with the highest reached by climbing 287 steps.

Floral Clock

Located near Princes Street, opposite The Royal Scottish Academy, this clock is decorated with flowers.

It is the world’s first floral clock, created in 1903, with a circumference of 10.8 meters and a diameter of 3.5 meters.

Dean Village

About 1.5 km walk from the center, along the Leith stream, is a part built in the 19th century.

It’s a great place to wander among the old-style buildings in this peaceful neighborhood. Along the stream, you can take a scenic walk on the Water of Leith Walkway.

Holyrood Park

Close to the center, this huge 250-hectare park is open to visitors. It is connected to the Holyroodhouse royal palace and was formerly a 12th-century royal hunting estate.

For those who like hiking, definitely go up to the top of Arthur’s Seat, which offers magnificent views of the city and the sea.

Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

Originally a medicinal herb garden, it now covers more than 28 hectares and boasts one of the world’s largest rhododendron collections.

The garden also features a greenhouse with tropical and rainforest plants in their native climate.

Best natural places, cities in Scotland

Edinburgh

Referred to as the „Athens of the North” the vibrant cultural life of the Scottish capital makes it an excellent choice for a few days’ visit.

If visiting in August, you can experience the Edinburgh Festival and The Fringe, the world’s largest arts festival.

Its most famous landmark is Edinburgh Castle, perched on a hill above the Old Town. Here, you’ll find the Scottish National War Museum and the coronation jewels.

To reach the castle, you’ll walk the renowned Royal Mile, flanked by fantastic historic buildings like St. Giles Cathedral.

At the other end of the Royal Mile is the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official residence of the Scottish Queen. When the Queen is not in residence, its historical apartments are open for viewing.

Edinburgh attractions

Glasgow

Scotland’s largest city is situated on the banks of the River Clyde. Just 80 km from Edinburgh, it’s a must-visit.

The city’s Celtic name translates to „green place”, hinting at the roughly 70 parks and green spaces in Glasgow.

One of its most famous buildings is the nearly 1000-year-old St. Mungo Cathedral. Nearby, you can explore the Necropolis, a Victorian cemetery with nearly 3500 memorials, including graves and mausoleums of the wealthy and leaders of that era.

In the West End, you’ll find the Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Scotland’s most visited attraction.

The botanical garden features a huge Victorian cast-iron greenhouse with a vast array of plants from around the world.

Glasgow attractions

St. Andrews

A small town on Scotland’s eastern coast (in Fife county), renowned for its tradition-rich university and as the birthplace of golf.

Here lies the unique St Andrews Links golf facility. In 1754, one of the first golf clubs, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, was established. The famous clubhouse is adjacent to the Old Course, one of the world’s most famous golf courses.

Outside the town are the ruins of the cathedral, built between the 13th and 16th centuries and destroyed during the Reformation by followers of John Knox. It’s presumed that relics of Apostle Andrew were placed here, leading to the incorporation of the St. Andrew’s Cross in the Scottish flag.

Glencoe Valley

A volcanic valley on the Scottish Highlands, a popular destination for hikers.

Tall peaks, misty valleys, and numerous streams make this landscape breathtaking. In summer, it’s a haven for hikers and climbers, while in winter, it attracts winter sports enthusiasts.

Also known as the „Valley of Tears” referencing the historical event of the 1692 Glencoe Massacre (where English soldiers killed 38 people).

Glenfinnan Viaduct

One of the most famous railway bridges in the world, popularized by the Harry Potter films.

This is where the scenes were shot where the Hogwarts Express passes through the landscape. This bridge has now become a cult attraction among fans, attracting thousands of tourists each year.

The viaduct consists of 21 arches, each 15 meters wide. The total length of the bridge is 380 meters, and it arches about 30 meters high over the Glenfinnan valley.

Cairngorms National Park

The United Kingdom’s largest national park, dominated by the Cairngorms mountain range.

Its central part is the Glenmore Forest Park, which also serves as a visitor center. Located on the shores of Loch Morlich, it’s an ideal starting point for a hike. From here, you can also reach the uppermost car park, where you can hike to the highest mountain peaks.

A visit to the Highland Wildlife Park is a must, where you can see various animal species, including tigers, wolves, and polar bears, living freely in a beautiful forested and hilly environment.

Don’t miss stopping in the charming town of Aviemore! From there, you can travel by steam train or taste excellent beers at the local brewery.

Aberdeen

Scotland’s third-largest city, it’s also the center of the northeastern region.

It boasts a long, sandy coastline, making it popular among tourists. These beaches extend north of the city for several kilometers.

The city also offers plenty of cultural attractions. The most popular is the Aberdeen Art Gallery, showcasing Victorian, Scottish, and 20th-century British paintings. Another notable institution is the Maritime Museum, which presents centuries of history with the North Sea.

Melrose Abbey

Located in the town of Melrose, its name symbolizes a combination of ‘mell’ (mason’s hammer) and ‘rose’ (a symbol of the Virgin Mary), to whom the Cistercians dedicated the abbey.

The abbey was founded by the Cistercian order under the command of King David I of Scotland in the early 12th century. It’s one of Britain’s most beautiful abbey ruins. Here lies the heart of King Robert I of Scotland.

Nearby are the Roman-era Trimontium fort and Dryburgh Abbey.

Mousa Broch

Part of the Shetland Islands, northeast of the mainland, Mousa Island hosts the best-preserved ancient building.

The double-walled tower (broch) is 12 meters high and 15 meters in diameter, likely built around 100 BC. The original staircase is still visible inside.

Loch Ness

Scotland’s most famous and second-largest lake, known primarily for the mythical monster said to inhabit it.

The legend has circulated for centuries, with the first known mention in Saint Columba’s legend from 565 AD.

In 1934, a photo depicting a long-necked monster emerging from the water was taken. Although later revealed as a hoax, the fame has since made the lake a popular attraction.

On its western side is Urquhart Castle, one of Scotland’s largest fortresses.

Lerwick

Anstruther

This picturesque little fishing town is situated on the coast of the Firth of Forth.

The settlement is filled with beautiful, well-maintained old buildings, among which stands out the centuries-old St. Adrian’s Church. One of its most popular attractions is the Scottish Fisheries Museum, which presents the history of Scottish fishing through detailed exhibitions.

The town hosts numerous cultural and music events throughout the year, including the famous Anstruther Harbour Festival, which celebrates local traditions and the community with music, dances, and boat races.
