Jordan is one of the safest and most enchanting countries in the Middle East, where ancient history, natural wonders, and traditional Arab culture create an unparalleled harmony.

It is bordered by Syria to the north, Iraq to the northeast, Saudi Arabia to the southeast, the Gulf of Aqaba to the southwest, and Israel and the Palestinian West Bank to the west.

Thanks to its strategic location, it has been situated at the crossroads of trade routes for millennia. The country’s territory contains traces of the world’s oldest human settlements, as well as numerous important sites from biblical history. In addition to the diversity of desert landscapes, Jordan’s climate is also extremely varied: everything from Mediterranean climate to desert conditions can be found.

Best places in Jordan

Petra

The „Rose City” is located in southern Jordan and is undoubtedly the country’s most famous attraction.

The city founded by the Nabataeans in the 4th century BC was located along trade routes and had more than 30,000 inhabitants during its heyday. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985, and in 2007 it was chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Among the buildings carved into red sandstone, the most famous is the Treasury, which offers a breathtaking sight with its 40-meter-high facade. The entrance to the city is through the Siq, a 1.5-kilometer-long rock gorge, which is an unforgettable experience in itself. At the end of the path, the imposing sight of the Treasury suddenly unfolds, which has served as the location for countless films.

Petra’s area is extremely extensive, requiring several days for complete exploration. The path to the Monastery involves climbing 800 stone-carved steps, but the effort is amply rewarded by the breathtaking panorama.

Amman

Jordan’s capital and largest city is also called the city of seven hills.

The city, known in ancient times as Philadelphia, has a history of more than 9,000 years and today serves as a modern metropolis and one of the safest centers in the region. A significant portion of the city’s population consists of Palestinian refugees and their descendants.

The Citadel is located in the heart of the city, situated on the highest hill and offering a stunning view of Amman. Here you can find the remains of the Temple of Hercules, the ruins of the Umayyad Palace, and the rich collection of the Archaeological Museum. The nearby Roman theater dates from the 2nd century and is still used for cultural events today.

The Abdoun and Jabal Amman neighborhoods offer an elegant environment for visitors, with numerous excellent restaurants, galleries, and boutiques. Rainbow Street is the center of Amman’s cultural life, where traditional coffee houses alternate with modern bars. The King Abdullah Mosque, with its impressive blue dome, is one of the city’s most beautiful architectural masterpieces.

Jordan’s capital has several ancient Roman monuments

Dead Sea

This unique lake is located at the Earth’s deepest point, 430 meters below sea level.

The lake’s salt content is nine times higher than regular seawater, making life impossible in its waters, but endowing it with unique healing properties. Due to its high mineral content and special atmosphere, the Dead Sea is one of the world’s most sought-after health tourism centers.

Swimming, or rather floating, in the water is a magical experience, as the high density makes it impossible to sink. After the water experience, visitors can get acquainted with the special cosmetic effects of the mud found on the shores. This black mud is rich in minerals and has extremely beneficial effects on the skin.

One of the saltiest lakes in the world

Wadi Rum

The desert region known as the Valley of the Moon is located in southern Jordan and constitutes one of the world’s most impressive desert landscapes.

The UNESCO World Heritage site offers a unique spectacle with its red and orange rock formations, natural stone bridges, and massive sand dunes. T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) also fought here with the Bedouins during World War I.

The protected area of Wadi Rum covers 720 square kilometers and is best explored under the guidance of local Bedouins. During jeep tours, visitors can learn about the desert’s secrets, ancient petroglyphs, and Lawrence’s Spring. Among the rock formations hide naturally formed stone bridges, canyons, and cave temples.

The real magic, however, unfolds at night when the desert’s starry sky is revealed. During overnight camping organized by the Bedouins, visitors can taste the traditional zarb meal, which is prepared in a pit dug in the sand.

Aqaba

Jordan’s only seaside city on the Red Sea coast is also one of the Middle East’s most dynamically developing tourist centers.

The city is strategically located at the border of four countries (Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Israel) and serves as an important commercial port. Aqaba enjoys pleasant, dry weather year-round.

The Red Sea’s crystal-clear water and rich marine life offer unparalleled experiences for divers and snorkeling enthusiasts. The coral garden in the protected area of Aqaba Marine Park is particularly stunning, where numerous rare marine species can be observed.

The city’s modern part features elegant hotels, restaurants, and shopping centers, while the old town welcomes visitors with traditional bazaars and coffee houses. Aqaba Castle dates from the 16th century and provides insight into the city’s history.

The Red Sea coastal town is a popular holiday destination

Jerash

The ancient city referred to as the „Pompeii of the East” is located 50 kilometers north of Amman and is one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the Middle East.

Its history stretches back more than 6,500 years, but it reached its golden age during Roman and Byzantine times. The city was destroyed in an earthquake in 749 and then lay hidden under sand for centuries.

It has several famous attractions. The Roman theater is famous for its stunning acoustics and still regularly hosts performances today. The Hadrian’s Gate stands at the southern entrance to the city and was built to commemorate the emperor’s visit in 129. The main street lined with columns, the Cardo, is still walkable today. Among the city’s religious buildings is the Temple of Artemis, which was dedicated to the city’s patron goddess.

Devastated by an earthquake

Umm Qais

The ruins of ancient Gadara are located in northern Jordan, at the confluence of the Sea of Galilee, the Jordan River, and the Golan Heights.

The settlement, founded as a Hellenistic city, reached its golden age during Roman times and served as an important cultural center. The city was a member of the Decapolis league and was famous for its philosophers and poets.

Among the ruins are the remains of a Roman theater built of basalt and limestone, offering beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. The settlement’s main street, built of black basalt stones, is still walkable today. The decoration of the nymphaeum, or public fountain, represents special artistic value.

Umm Qais’s special attraction lies in the fact that from here you can see three countries – Jordan, Israel, and Syria. The sparkling waters of the Sea of Galilee and the mountains of the Golan Heights create a stunning panorama. The museum displays valuable archaeological finds, including mosaics, sculptures, and coins. Excavations in the area are still ongoing, so new discoveries are expected in the future.

Mount Nebo

According to the Bible, Moses died on this 817-meter-high mountain after viewing the Promised Land.

The mountain is located 10 kilometers from Madaba and has been a pilgrimage site for followers of the three monotheistic religions for centuries. The mountaintop offers an unparalleled view of the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and on clear days, the outlines of Jerusalem.

The Franciscan monastery on top of the mountain was built on the foundations of a 4th-century Byzantine basilica. The temple’s mosaic floors date from the 4th-6th centuries and depict biblical scenes decorated with animals and plants. The cross behind the altar is the work of Italian artist Giovanni Fantoni.

The visitor center’s exhibition showcases the area’s archaeological finds and the history of Christian pilgrimages. The monument next to the mountaintop commemorates Pope John Paul II’s visit in 2000.

Madaba

The „City of Mosaics” is located 30 kilometers southwest of Amman and became famous as the center of Byzantine and Umayyad mosaic art.

The city already existed in biblical times and played an important role in the history of early Christianity. Today it is one of Jordan’s most important cultural and tourist centers.

In St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church is the world-famous Madaba Map, a 6th-century mosaic that is the oldest representation of Palestine. This mosaic, consisting of 2 million pieces, depicts the Holy Land from Jerusalem to the Nile Delta. The map was originally 15.7×6 meters, but only a portion remains today.

The city’s other churches and public buildings are also decorated with rich mosaics. The Church of the Virgin Mary, the Church of the Prophets, and the Church of the Apostles all contain stunning artistic creations. In the Madaba Archaeological Park, the mosaic floors of several buildings can be viewed in one location.

Al-Karak

Karak Castle stands on a 1,000-meter-high hilltop along the ancient trade route between the Jordan Valley and the Red Sea.

The fortress built during the Crusades is one of the finest examples of 12th-century military architecture, which played a key role in the region’s history due to its strategic importance. Saladin captured the castle from the Crusaders in 1188.

The fortress’s massive walls, underground corridors, and casemates can still be explored today. The castle area covers approximately 25,000 square meters and includes various building sections: living quarters, storage rooms, kitchen, and chapel. The northeastern tower offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The city itself also offers interesting sights with its traditional stone buildings and bazaars. Local craftsmen particularly excel in weaving and metalworking. The Karak Archaeological Museum displays valuable finds from the area, dating from various periods.

Dana Biosphere Reserve

Jordan’s largest nature reserve covers 320 square kilometers and runs along part of the Rift Valley.

The reserve combines four different zones: Mediterranean forested areas, steppe grasslands, desert zones, and lowland Sudanese vegetation. This diversity represents unparalleled ecological value in the region.

It is home to more than 800 plant species, many of which are endemic, meaning they are found only here. The animal life is also extremely rich: 38 mammal species, 190 bird species, 36 reptile species, and numerous insect species live here. It provides important refuge for endangered species such as the Nubian ibex and the Syrian wolf.

Ajloun Castle

The fortress was built at the end of the 12th century to defend against the Crusader armies and was completed on the orders of Saladin’s nephew, Izz al-Din Usama.

The castle’s strategic location allowed control of the Jordan Valley and surrounding trade routes. During the fortress’s construction, natural rock formations were utilized, so it organically fits into the landscape.

The square-based castle has seven towers that served different functions: living quarters, storage, watchtowers, and firing positions. The wall thickness reaches six meters in places, providing great resistance against attacks.

The Ajloun Nature Reserve around the castle covers 13 square kilometers and presents a beautiful example of Mediterranean forest vegetation. The area has numerous hiking trails where visitors can learn about the local flora and fauna. From the top of the castle, there is a beautiful panorama of the surrounding mountains and valleys, and on clear days, the Sea of Galilee is also visible.

Great views

Wadi Mujib

The natural attraction known as „Jordan’s Grand Canyon” is the world’s deepest nature reserve.

The canyon begins 400 meters below sea level and rises to 900 meters in height. The reserve is located on the eastern shore of the Dead Sea, and its central part consists of a deep canyon carved by the Mujib River over millions of years.

Wadi Mujib’s special ecological significance comes from the fact that desert and tropical climates meet here, creating an extremely diverse flora and fauna. The area contains 420 plant species, including many rare and endemic species.

Visitors can participate in water hikes that require passing through narrow sections of the canyon, sometimes requiring swimming. The Adventure Trail offers a particularly exciting experience when visitors rappel down waterfalls with ropes. The Siq Trail circular hike also allows walking on dry paths.

Al-Maghtas

The site known as „Bethany Beyond the Jordan” is located on the eastern bank of the Jordan River and, according to Christian tradition, is where John the Baptist baptized Jesus.

The UNESCO World Heritage site since 2015 has been a pilgrimage destination for centuries and plays an important role in the Christian world. Archaeological excavations have uncovered evidence supporting the site’s historical authenticity.

The area contains more than 50 archaeological sites spanning from Roman times to the modern era. Among the most important finds are the remains of Byzantine churches, monastic cells, and pilgrim hostels.
Qasr Amra

The Umayyad desert castle is located 85 kilometers east of Amman, near the Syrian border.

The building, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, was built in the early 8th century and served as a desert residence for the caliphs. The castle is significant both architecturally and artistically because it combines Byzantine, Persian, and early Islamic stylistic elements.

The castle’s main value is the series of frescoes decorating the interior walls, which is a uniquely well-preserved example of early Islamic art. The themes of the wall paintings are extremely varied: hunting scenes, musicians, dancers, and astronomical representations. The star map visible on the dome is a combined representation of southern and northern constellations.

The castle had a thermal bath complex that followed the traditions of Roman baths. The bathing system consisted of three rooms: cold, lukewarm, and hot baths. The heating system operated with underfloor heating, demonstrating advanced engineering knowledge.

Saudi Arabia was long a closed country, but in recent years it has become increasingly open in terms of tourism. So let’s look at 13 wonderful attractions!

Saudi Arabia is also called „the land of the two holy mosques” after the mosques in Mecca and Medina, which are the two holiest places in the Islamic world. It is bordered by Jordan, Iraq, and Kuwait to the north, Oman and Yemen to the south, and Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to the east.

Riyadh

The capital of Saudi Arabia showcases the country’s modern face while being deeply rooted in tradition.

Rising in the heart of the city is the Kingdom Centre, which dominates the skyline with its iconic top. The observation deck at the top of the tower offers a breathtaking panorama of the endless city, especially at sunset.

The historic Al-Masmak fortress takes visitors back to the 19th century when Riyadh was still a small town and played a key role in the establishment of the Saudi Kingdom. The building, now converted into a museum, presents the history of the unification of the kingdom and the traditional lifestyle of the region.

The city’s bustling bazaars, such as Souq Al-Zal, are real treasure troves for those who want to discover local crafts. In addition to traditional perfumes, jewelry, and spices, visitors can gain insight into Bedouin culture, which remains a defining part of the country’s identity to this day.

Al Ahsa

One of the country’s most fertile oases, offering a special atmosphere with its vast palm forests and historical sites. The region, which is part of UNESCO’s World Heritage, boasts more than two million date palms, among which idyllic water sources and traditional villages are hidden.

One of the oasis’s most famous attractions is Al-Qarah Mountain, whose special rock formations hide cool caves. In addition to its unique natural beauty, the place is also of archaeological significance, as it was an important trade route in the region thousands of years ago.

In the historic Al Ahsa souq, visitors can learn about local crafts, such as traditional pottery and carpet weaving. The handicrafts available here are perfect gifts for those who want to take home a piece of Saudi Arabia’s cultural heritage.

Mecca

The holiest city of Islam attracts millions from all over the world every year.

The Kaaba stone is the central part of the Masjid al-Haram mosque, which marks the direction of prayer for Muslims. During the Hajj pilgrimage, believers circle the Kaaba, which is considered one of the most important religious ceremonies.

The city preserves many important sites in Islamic history, including the Cave of Hira, where Prophet Muhammad received his first revelation. This place has special significance for pilgrims, as it is where the revelation of the Islamic religion began.

Its modern infrastructure allows for the comfortable reception of visitors, but due to strict religious rules, the city is not open to non-Muslims. Nevertheless, the spiritual significance of Mecca is felt throughout the world.

One of the country’s most spectacular historical sites, attracting visitors with its spectacular rock formations and archaeological treasures.

The city, which preserves traces of the ancient Nabatean civilization, was once an important trading hub and now serves as an impressive attraction. The region is home to the old town of Al-Ula, made up of traditional mud-built houses. The atmosphere of the settlement invites visitors on a journey through time, while exploring the remains of the once-flourishing city through narrow alleys.

The surrounding rocky countryside is a real paradise for nature lovers. The special formations formed from sandstone, such as the Elephant Rock, provide a fascinating sight, especially at sunset when the colors of the red rocks come alive.

Jeddah

Located on the shores of the Red Sea, this cosmopolitan city is one of Saudi Arabia’s most exciting cultural centers.

The historic core of the city, the Al-Balad district, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and with its traditional mud-built houses provides a fascinating glimpse into the old Arab world. The Nassif House and the old markets preserve the atmosphere of the former merchant city.

Jeddah is also famous for its modern attractions, such as the King Fahd Fountain, the world’s tallest seawater fountain. The spectacular water jet shoots up to more than 300 meters high, especially impressive at sunset when it is illuminated.

The city is also a paradise for diving and water sports. Coral reefs and colorful marine life await visitors in the crystal-clear waters of the Red Sea. Jeddah’s port and Corniche promenade are favorite meeting places for locals and tourists, where elegant restaurants and cafes offer perfect views of the sea.

Hegra

Also known as Mada’in Saleh, it is one of the most significant monuments of the ancient Nabatean civilization, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The site is considered a sister city to Petra in Jordan, as it was created by the same Nabatean culture and hides similarly impressive rock-cut tombs. Walking among the monumental tombs and sandstone rock formations, visitors can discover the once-flourishing past of the region. One of the most famous tombs, Qasr Al-Farid, stands out from the others with its special, solitary form, and is considered one of the best-preserved Nabatean structures.

Besides its historical significance, the surrounding desert landscape of Hegra is also impressive. The huge sand dunes and red rocks create a special atmosphere, made even more magical by the light of the sunset.

Wadi Al Disah

A hidden natural wonder in the northwestern part of Saudi Arabia, famous for its dramatic rock canyons and lush oases.

Hiking or going on a jeep tour in the valley is an unforgettable experience, as the steep cliffs and natural formations offer a varied sight. Among the red and orange-tinted rocks, we can discover smaller caves and rock paintings that preserve the traces of ancient civilizations that lived here.

Medina

The second holiest city of Islam is famous for the Prophet’s Mosque.

The Masjid al-Nabawi was founded by Prophet Muhammad himself in 622 when he moved to Medina, and his tomb is also located here. It has been continuously expanded and decorated over the centuries, making it one of the largest and most spectacular mosques in the world today. One of its most iconic elements is the Green Dome, which covers the tomb of Prophet Muhammad. Originally, the mosque was a simple, mud-built structure, but today it is characterized by huge marble courtyards, impressive minarets, and wonderful decorations.

The Rawdah al-Jannah or the „Garden of Paradise” is a special area inside the mosque located between Prophet Muhammad’s house and the original mosque. According to believers, prayers said here are particularly blessed.

The islands are known as a protected ecological area where rare bird species, sea turtles, and dolphins live. For diving enthusiasts, the colorful world of coral reefs offers an unforgettable experience, as special marine creatures can be observed in the shallow waters.

The historical ruins of Farasan on the islands preserve the memories of the former Arab and Ottoman era. The region once had a vibrant pearl fishing industry, a tradition that can still be felt in the lives of the locals today.

Oman isn’t the most popular Arab holiday destination, yet wonderful locations and beaches await tourists. Let me show you 12 magnificent places!

Oman has numerous tourist attractions, especially in the field of cultural tourism. The sultanate places great emphasis on preserving traditions and ensuring environmental sustainability.

Best places in Oman

Muscat

The capital of Oman is the country’s cultural, historical, and economic center, where modernity meets authentic Arab traditions.

Located on the coast of the Gulf of Oman, the city offers a stunning contrast: mountains and desert in the background, while turquoise sea waves welcome visitors in the foreground. Muscat’s unique atmosphere is defined by elegant Arab architecture, historic forts, and bustling bazaars.

Its most significant attraction is the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. This monumental mosque is one of Oman’s most important architectural creations, capable of accommodating up to 20,000 worshippers at once. Its interior is breathtaking, with huge chandeliers and one of the world’s largest hand-knotted Persian carpets.

Nizwa

One of Oman’s oldest cities was once the country’s capital and remains a major center of cultural and religious life.

Built in the 17th century, Nizwa Fort is one of the most famous symbols of Omani history. The fort’s massive circular tower is a unique architectural solution designed for the city’s defense. The top of the tower offers magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and palm groves. The fort also houses a museum showcasing Oman’s history, culture, and the city’s strategic importance.

The city’s market is one of the most authentic markets. It’s famous for silver jewelry, especially traditional Omani daggers (khanjar), as well as spices, pottery, and fresh fruits.

Wahiba Sands

Located in eastern Oman, between the Hajar Mountains and the Arabian Sea, this desert landscape is breathtaking.

The area offers a spectacular view with sand dunes varying in golden, reddish, and yellow hues, which can rise up to 100 meters high. Traveling across the dunes in a 4×4 vehicle is a great experience.

Bedouin tribes have adapted to the desert’s harsh conditions for millennia. Visitors can peek into traditional tents, learn about local crafts, and taste tea and food prepared by the Bedouins.

Jebel Akhdar

Its name means „Green Mountain” in Arabic, and it’s one of Oman’s most spectacular and unique natural wonders.

Locals have practiced terrace farming on its slopes for centuries. The terraced gardens grow pomegranates, peaches, grapes, walnuts, and roses. The rose water made from Damascus roses grown here is one of Oman’s most famous exports. In spring, the mountain’s rose gardens bloom, offering a special experience with their sight and fragrance.

Its climate differs significantly from the lowland areas. Due to the elevation, temperatures here are often 15-20 degrees cooler, making it particularly attractive during summer months.

Salalah

One of the country’s greenest cities, featuring beautiful white sandy beaches.

While the rest of Oman has a hot desert climate, Salalah welcomes visitors with a tropical climate, lush vegetation, and beautiful beaches. The city is famous for its rainy monsoon season, the „Khareef”.

Between June and September, the monsoon rains bring spectacular changes to the landscape: the desert transforms into a verdant oasis, and the mountains, hills, and valleys burst into vibrant green. During this time, the city and its surroundings become a tropical paradise, with waterfalls, mountain streams, and lush vegetation appearing.

Salalah is famous for frankincense cultivation and is one of the world’s most important frankincense producers. Visitors can get insight into plantation operations and participate in frankincense collection processes.

White sandy beaches can also be found here

Sumhuram

Also known as Khor Rori, located near Salalah, it’s one of the most important archaeological sites.

The settlement was once the center of ancient frankincense trade and is now known as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It held extraordinary historical significance as it played an important role in ancient Arabia’s trade network.

In the ruined city, you can discover ancient temples, warehouses, walls, and other structures that characterized the trading center of that time. The city’s layout shows a typical ancient trading settlement, with temples and cargo areas at its center.

Jebel Shams

The „Mountain of the Sun” is Oman’s highest peak, part of the Hajar Mountains.

Its peak is 3,009 meters above sea level and is considered the highest point not only in Oman but in the entire Arabian Peninsula. The mountain’s unique geological formations, breathtaking panorama, and rich natural environment make it a popular destination for hikers, adventurers, and nature lovers.

Another famous attraction is Wadi Ghul, which is Oman’s largest and deepest canyon. It’s often called „Oman’s Grand Canyon”. At the bottom of the canyon, you’ll find wild landscapes, massive rock walls, and green oases.

The highest point of the Arabian Peninsula

Sur

The city is famous for its maritime heritage, traditional dhow boat building, and beautiful coastline.

One of its most beautiful parts is the Al Ayjah quarter, which lies by the sea. The local houses have white-washed walls and traditional Omani architecture, and the quarter is full of narrow streets, small marketplaces, and shops gleaming with vibrant colors.

The history and construction of dhow boats are showcased at the Dhow Factory. These elongated boats are still made using traditional methods today.

You can also see the making of typical dhoni boats

Wadi Shab

This magical valley and oasis, about 15 kilometers from Sur, is one of the country’s most popular natural attractions.

Its biggest draw is the hiking trail that leads visitors to the inner areas of the gorge. Moving through the valley, across rocky paths and riverbeds, we can discover this wonderful landscape. The hike takes about 1 hour and is relatively easy.

One of its most exciting parts is a small cave with a waterfall. The waterfall comes from one of the pools and can be reached by a short hike. We can swim inside it, which provides the greatest experience.

Popular hiking destination

Al Hoota Cave

The cave is an enchanting natural attraction with its special geological formations, rich minerals, and stalactite formations.

It’s more than 5 kilometers long, but only part of the tour route, approximately 850 meters, can be visited. Its interior is filled with special stalactite formations, static and dynamic mineral formations.

Another special feature is the underground lake located at the cave’s deepest point. The lake’s water is clear and bluish-green in color.

Bahla

A picturesque small town in Oman’s interior, about 160 kilometers west of Muscat. The city is famous for the Bahla Fort, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The country’s most important fort has existed since the 12th century and was in the hands of various dynasties throughout its long history, including the Ya’rubi dynasty who strengthened and expanded it.

The fort is characterized by thick stone walls, towers, and fortress-like structures. A defensive wall was built around the fort, encompassing a huge area. The main attractions include various towers, the moat and gates, as well as inner courtyards where some rooms and warehouses are located.

But the city’s culture is also outstanding. In the areas around the city, sheep and goat farming, crafts, and trade took place, and locals were famous for their pottery art. The pottery from the Bahla area, especially Bahla vessels, featured as unique pieces of local culture and arts along the trade routes.

The castle is an important historical site

Masirah Island

Its sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and wildlife make the island a popular destination.

The island was an important part of Omani and surrounding Arab territories’ history and played a significant role in shipping and trade routes. Its location also gave it strategic importance.

The island is famous for its long, white sandy beaches, where wide sand dunes can often be seen. It has a significant sea turtle population, which lay their eggs on the shores. They are protected animals, of course, but we can observe the hatching of small turtles in several places.

Abu Dhabi often takes a back seat to Dubai. However, you can feel like you’re in a similarly luxurious city here, and Abu Dhabi’s attractions also dazzle visitors. Get to know one of the richest cities in the world!

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and the emirate of the same name, the largest city in the country, and the second most populous after Dubai.

It is located in the central, northern part of the country, on the coast of the Persian Gulf, in the northern foreground of the desert et-Taff region. It was built on an island, connected to the mainland by a causeway and several artificial bridges.

Many say that Abu Dhabi has better preserved its original atmosphere. It’s not for nothing that it’s called the cultural capital of the Emirates.

I spent 4 days in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, which you can read a detailed travelgue here!

Two world records are associated with the mosque. The world’s largest carpet can be seen here, covering an area of 5,700 m2 and weighing a total of 47 tons. In addition, it boasts the world’s largest chandelier, which is 10 meters in diameter.

The palace is a hotel and conference complex that tourists can also visit. The color of the building is meant to reflect the various shades of sand found in the Arabian Desert.

The walls are gilded, decorated almost everywhere with gold and silver mosaics. There are 394 rooms in the hotel, including 114 suites. Most of the suites are furnished with gold and marble.

Louvre Abu Dhabi

With an area of 8600 square meters, it is the largest art museum on the Arabian Peninsula. The permanent collection consists of about 600 artifacts and artworks.

The museum showcases artworks from all over the world, with a particular focus on bridging the gap between Eastern and Western art.

The complex consists of 55 white buildings inspired by old Arab towns. From the outside, it is covered by a dome resembling overlapping palm leaves. Inside, the Nouvel dome is a spectacular architectural solution through which the sun filters in differently each time.

For the first year after its opening in 2017, 13 French museums loaned works to the museum. These include Leonardo da Vinci’s La Belle Ferronniere from the Louvre, Vincent Van Gogh’s self-portrait from the Musée d’Orsay, and a statue depicting Ramses II from the Louvre.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi also showcases ancient artifacts and antiques from the Middle East. For example, a monumental two-headed bust from Jordan that is more than 8,000 years old and a prehistoric stone tool from Saudi Arabia made 350,000 years ago.

Religion

Since we are in an Arab country where Islam is the religion, we need to pay attention to a few things!

Although it’s a city with a more modern outlook (for an Arab country), we should observe the main rules! Men should preferably not walk around in loose tank tops, and women should not wear provocative outfits. Although there are no sanctions for this, it may elicit disapproving looks.

The period of Ramadan is particularly noteworthy (for us, it’s at a different time each year). This is the 9th month of the Islamic lunar calendar, when Muslim believers do not eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. During this time, do not eat or drink in public!

Qatar’s capital is developing rapidly, as evidenced by the fact that it has already hosted the World Cup. Although Doha has not yet reached the level of Dubai in terms of attractions, more and more tourist attractions are being built every year.

In 2014, I had already been to Dubai, but at that time, I was a less experienced traveler, so I missed out on a lot. However, this year I caught up on almost everything!

At the end of January, I noticed that there were particularly good flight deals to the Emirates for early March. I managed to book a trip from Thursday to Sunday, flying to Abu Dhabi in the morning and returning from Dubai in the evening. It was a perfect combination, a rare good deal for non-hot weather. (There might have been even cheaper deals towards the end of March, but that was during Ramadan, so not as ideal.)

This time, I didn’t travel alone; a friend’s 13 and 16-year-old sons came along with me. Dubai is suitable for all ages, they just had to endure walking around the city from morning till night. 🙂

Hungarian citizens do not need a visa, so we could enter the country at Abu Dhabi and Dubai airports with our passports. One thing to be careful about is to make sure the border officer stamps the correct date in the passport.

Luckily, we caught good weather. Friday was a bit cloudy and humid but not very hot. Saturday and Sunday had brilliant sunshine, especially on Sunday, you could really feel the power of the Sun. Those sensitive to sunlight should definitely be prepared, as I also felt the beneficial influx of vitamin D on my skin after just a few minutes.

Abu Dhabi

We departed from Liszt Ferenc Airport at 8.10 with Wizz Air and landed at 16.50 local time (+3 hours time difference).

We used taxis twice. In both Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the official taxi brand is Toyota Camry, that’s what you should look for. The starting fare from the airport to the city is 25 dirhams, and in the city, it’s 5 dirhams. Our ride from the airport to the hotel, about 24 km away, cost 67 dirhams, so it’s very cheap for several people.

Since we also used public transport, we needed to buy a Hafilat card. There’s a machine at the airport (in the middle of the arrivals hall), where you can pay with cash or a bank card. Confusingly, you have to buy it in the „recharge” menu. The card costs 10 dirhams, and any amount above that is for travel. You need to tap the card to the sensor on the bus when getting on and off, and the display will show the remaining balance. There are top-up machines at several bus stops.

That same evening, we visited the famous Sheikh Zayed Mosque. Entry is free, but you need to register on the official website. You can book in ten-minute intervals, and the QR code is sent by email. The entrance is in the small shopping center in front of the mosque, on the -1 level. They weren’t very strict about the time, we got in 15 minutes before our booked time.

The mosque is marvelous both inside and out! If you spend more time in Abu Dhabi, see it both during the day and at night, each has its charm. I specifically booked for the evening to see it illuminated. I was not disappointed! There is no time limit for the visit, you can stay as long as you want. You can only take photos in designated areas, clearly indicated by signs.

It’s essential to cover knees and shoulders, so you can’t enter in shorts! Women need to wear an abaya, which can be bought at several stores at the entrance.

The next day, we took a taxi to the city center. Being Friday, there were hardly any people on the streets. Compared to Dubai, there are not many sights, but it’s definitely not to be missed!

The Emirates Palace building and its gardens are particularly noteworthy! It opens its gates at 10 am, and shorts are not allowed. Nowadays, it functions as a hotel.

Across from it is the Emirates Tower, which has an observatory at the top. We didn’t go up, as it was quite hazy, and we wouldn’t have seen much.

It’s worth walking along the road leading to Al Marina Island, from where you can get a good view of the city’s skyscrapers. On this island is the Emirates Heritage Village, which brings to life the past of Abu Dhabi.

Travel between Abu Dhabi and Dubai

There is a regular bus service between the two cities, marked E101. It runs from dawn to evening, every 20 minutes during the day. The journey takes about 100 minutes.

You can buy tickets at the bus station building, clearly marked as Dubai. You can only pay in cash! They give you a NOL Card, on which the ticket is loaded, costing 25 dirhams. The card fee is 6 dirhams and is valid for five years.

In Dubai, the final stop is at Ibn Battuta Shopping Mall, from where the metro takes you into the city.

Dubai

Useful tips

Dubai covers a large area, so for a short stay, it’s wise to divide which parts to explore. For example, traveling between Dubai Marina and the old town takes nearly an hour by metro, so a lot of time is spent in transit. Try to plan visits to attractions that are close to each other.

Book a hotel close to a metro station for easy access within a few minutes’ walk. The red metro line runs through the city along Sheikh Zayed Road, and most attractions are easily accessible with at most one transfer. Since it mostly runs above ground, the view itself is an experience. We stayed at the 4-star Atana Hotel, a few minutes from the Dubai Internet City metro station. (At 50 euro per person per night with breakfast, it was good value for money.)

Nine years ago, I also took a long-sleeved sweater to the city, as they sometimes cool the interiors quite a lot. Of course, it’s nice to enter the cool from the heat, but it’s easy to catch a cold. If you’re prone to colds, be sure to bring one!

Public transportation

We arrived at Ibn Battuta at 13:45 on Friday, where we topped up our NOL Card with a weekly pass at the metro station. It costs 110 dirhams and allows unlimited use on the metro, tram, and buses for seven calendar days. Except for the 105 (Miracle Garden) and 106 (Global Village) buses, these require an additional 5 dirhams per direction to be on the card.

If you don’t want to buy a weekly pass, load a certain amount onto the card. Dubai’s transportation is divided into zones. The system deducts the fare based on one, two, or more than two zones traveled. Always tap the card upon exiting, where the display shows the available amount.

Buying the card and topping it up is simple and available in English. Here you can also pay by card.

For the metro, note that the last train’s timing is uncertain. Supposedly it runs until midnight on Saturdays, but the Dubai Mall station was already closed at 11:30 PM. So, we had to take a taxi. Don’t be surprised if you get stranded. 🙂

Boat to Dubai Marina

Several boat routes are available. We chose the FR1 from the boat station near Al Ghubaiba metro station to Dubai Marina. I recommend this route for its many sights and the panoramic view. It departs at 13:00 and 18:00, and tickets can be bought at a booth near the boat station. The journey takes about 2 hours and costs 50 dirhams (about 13 euro), payable with NOL Card or cash. Considering the experience, it’s a bargain!

We took the 18:00 boat, just in time to catch the dusk on the sea, so we could see the city’s skyscrapers starting to light up. It passes right by Palm Island and arrives at Dubai Marina near the giant Ferris wheel.

Make sure your camera and/or phone is charged, as we couldn’t stop taking pictures and videos. This is a must-do activity!

Dubai Marina in the evening

The boat docked near Dubai Marina Mall. This area is an artificial bay, filled with skyscrapers and a popular nearby beach.

A promenade runs around the bay, and you can walk for hours among the differently lit buildings.

A few hundred meters away, Marina Beach is a real central spot. It’s crowded with people, even late at night with many swimmers. This is the best spot for a view of the giant Ferris wheel.

Miracle Garden

After breakfast on Saturday, we took the metro to the Mall of Emirates, from where bus 105 goes to the garden. As mentioned earlier, this (and bus 106) is a private bus, so the weekly pass doesn’t apply. The ticket costs 5 dirhams, ensure you have enough money on the NOL Card (10 dirhams for a round trip).

Entry tickets can be bought on-site for 75 dirhams per person (about 18 euro).

Many have probably seen the picture of an Emirates plane adorned with flowers. Well, that’s here. The entire garden is a huge floral empire, with numerous buildings and fairy tale figures decorated with flowers.

Ski Dubai is unique, not found anywhere else, especially not in a desert setting. It’s quite extraordinary. 😊

Madinat Jumeirah and Burj Al-Arab

From the Mall, we took bus 81 to one of the world’s most famous hotels. You can take close-up photos of the hotel on foot, but there’s an iconic spot in the adjacent bazaar for an even better view.

Madinat Jumeirah is a bazaar surrounded by lakes and walkways. It’s a pleasant place, but I wouldn’t call it a must-see. Perhaps visit for the view of Burj Al-Arab.

We had booked tickets online for the observation deck on the 124th and 125th floors at 5:30 PM. It’s advisable to buy tickets in advance, as they sell out days ahead for the most popular times. Tickets for sunset times are more expensive, costing us 244 dirhams.

Since sunset was at 6:25 PM, we reached the top in daylight and watched as the city gradually lit up. It’s a magnificent sight, and I recommend watching the sunset from here!

The entrance to Burj Khalifa is on the lower level of Dubai Mall, near the exit to the Fountain. The elevator takes less than a minute to reach the 124th floor. There’s an open section here, but not all around. The 360-degree view is on the 125th floor. You almost have to fight for a spot to take photos, as everyone wants to get their picture taken first. However, if you are patient, there will always be a free spot for a selfie.

You can stay on the observation deck as long as you like; there’s no time limit. Expect to wait a long time for the elevator down during popular times. We queued for about 45 minutes around 7 PM.

My advice is not to stay in one spot! It’s worth watching the few-minute shows from different locations. The popular spots get very crowded, but for example, on the west side of the lake, at Green Roof, you can enjoy the show lying on artificial turf.

After breakfast on Sunday, we packed up and set off for our last day. Although we had been to the Marina on Friday evening, it’s a must-see during the day too!

The observatory is on the 52nd floor and offers a fantastic view of the „palm tree”. We bought tickets online for the 11 AM slot for 100 dirhams per person (about 25 euro).

The Pointe

This is a beachfront, bazaar-like area at the „tip” of the palm trunk. It offers a great view of the Atlantis Hotel.

There are bean bags on the beach, and we rested for a few minutes under the umbrellas, enjoying the view. (No payment is required.)

There is a fountain show here in the evenings, but unfortunately, we didn’t have time for it.

After the rest, we traveled back to the starting point by Monorail.

Old town, Bazaars

We took the metro to Burjuman station, where the old town begins. This is the „old” Dubai, where everyday life is tangible. The locals stared as we walked down the main street, wondering what tourists were doing there. In one store, there was a huge crowd, but we were the only tourists! I like visiting such places.

Reaching the Creek, many local boats, abras, ferry people across to the other side. The journey takes a few minutes, and it’s a must-try! The boatman collects the fare during the trip.

On the other side, in the Deira district, are the spice, gold, and perfume markets side by side. You can get everything here, but the vendors can be quite insistent. Sometimes they push too hard, and you need to bargain hard. We just walked through the entire bazaar, as we were in a hurry to get to the airport.

And what we missed

One major attraction we didn’t have time for was the Dubai Frame. This window frame-shaped observatory was built a few years ago, an interesting sight even from afar.

Of course, there are still several attractions to visit, but I think we saw most of the city. What we missed, we’ll do next time.

Dubai has become one of the most visited places in the world, with more and more to see in this luxury city every year. The skyscrapers rising from the desert sands are a sight to behold.

It is the most populous and the second-largest city in the United Arab Emirates. It is located on the southern coast of the Persian Gulf, on the Arabian Peninsula.

The capital of the emirate is Abu Dhabi, the country’s largest city by area.

I spent 4 days in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, which you can read a detailed travelgue here!

Attractions in Dubai

Burj Khalifa

The 160-floor tower, tapering upwards in steps, stands at a height of 828 meters and is the tallest building in the world. Located on the 124th floor is an enclosed observation deck, offering a fantastic view of the city and the sea.

Burj Khalifa holds several world records, such as the highest observation deck, swimming pool, entertainment venue, and the world’s fastest elevator.

Tickets for the observation deck must be purchased for a specific time, but once at the top, you can stay as long as you like. It’s advisable to reach the top just before sunset to witness the sun disappearing over the sea horizon.

Next to the building is the Dubai Mall, the world’s second-largest shopping center by total land area!

Buy tickets and find all information here!

To get there, take the red metro line to the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station.

The tallest building in the world

Dubai Fountain

The famous „dancing” fountain in front of Burj Khalifa is the world’s largest of its kind, with only Las Vegas having a similar type.

Especially in the dark, sit on a bench along the lakeside promenade and admire the performance (e.g., to Michael Jackson, Bocelli).

Its unique design features five concentric circles. The water jets shoot up to impressive heights, and the show is visible from more than 30 kilometers away. Thanks to the thousands of WET super-shooters and over 20 colored projectors, the spectacle has become a true visual masterpiece.

There are two performances after 12 noon, but from sunset until 11 PM, the water show can be seen every half hour.

You can see the show in a large area

Palm Jumeirah and Atlantis Hotel

The artificially created island known as Palm Jumeirah is fully developed, which becomes evident when traveling through it.

However, what attracts tourists to the „tip” of the palm is the Atlantis Hotel. It can be accessed by car through an underwater tunnel.

Along the palm’s „fronds,” thousands of luxury hotels and apartments have been built, frequented by celebrities.

The site is not just a hotel but also features a water theme park with an aquarium, slide park, dolphinarium, and many pools. It’s open to outsiders for a fee, allowing visitors to enjoy all these amenities.

To reach it, take the Monorail, whose starting station is accessible by the T1 tram to the Palm Jumeirah 1 stop.

Atlantis Hotel at the end of the palm tree

The View at the Palm

As well as the Burj Khalifa, this is another place to visit.

Located in the middle of the Palm Island, in the Nakheel Mall area, this 240-metre-high lookout offers a magnificent view of the surrounding area.

An elevator takes you to the top level, but before you go, a short video gives you an insight into the design and construction process of the island.

All information here!

Getting there: take the Monorail to Nakheel Mall.

Great view of the palm tree

Dubai Marina

An artificial bay near Palm Jumeirah, you can stroll around it on a developed walkway, shaded by tall skyscrapers.

You’ll see numerous beautiful yachts and the large Dubai Marina Mall is also located here. The T1 tram circles the most picturesque part of the marina, allowing for a scenic ride.

Access: By the red metro line to Dubai Marina Mall stop; or by the T1 tram (with a metro connection at Marina Mall stop).

The Marina is full of skyscrapers

Burj al-Arab

The iconic sail-shaped hotel, Burj al-Arab, stands on an artificial island. It’s Dubai’s hallmark of luxury, often referred to as the world’s first seven-star hotel.

The suites, fashioned in modern Arabic style, are exclusive to guests, but parts of the hotel, including its restaurants, are open to the public.

The Al Muntaha restaurant, situated 200 meters high, offers a spectacular view of the bay. For information on reservations and restaurant visits here.

Access: By bus 8, 81, or 88 to the Burj Al Arab Hotel stop.

Burj Al Arab is one of Dubai’s unmissable buildings

Dubai Frame

One of the newest attractions, resembling a giant picture frame, has quickly become one of Dubai’s most popular sites!

Its upper part features a glass floor, offering a view of the city beneath. The external elevator has glass sides, providing stunning views on the way up and down.

Often overlooked in favor of the Burj Khalifa, it’s considerably cheaper and, according to many, equally impressive.

Access: From Al Jafiliya metro station (red line) take bus F09 to the Dubai Frame stop.

Dubai Frame is one of Dubai’s newest attractions

Dubai Miracle Garden

A garden showcasing an array of flowers in various designs, often recommended as a must-visit.

The garden’s highlight is an Emirates airplane entirely adorned with flowers. Additionally, numerous fairytale figures are displayed, making it an excellent outing for children.

Shopping Malls

Dubai offers a multitude of malls, not just for shopping but also for experiencing unique attractions. Here are three notable ones.

The most striking feature of the Mall of the Emirates is Ski Dubai, a ski resort behind a glass wall! It has five slopes, with the longest being 400 meters. Equipment can be rented on-site. There’s also a children’s entertainment center, Magic Planet. It’s accessible via the red metro line.

Dubai Mall is situated next to the Burj Khalifa, this mall is the world’s largest shopping, entertainment, and leisure destination. It houses The Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, an Olympic-sized ice rink, the educational and entertaining Kidzania, and a vast cinema complex. Several entrances lead to the musical fountain, making it an ideal afternoon outing.

Dubai Festival City Mall is located along the banks of the Dubai Creek, near the international airport. Its unique appeal lies in the evening views from the waterside promenade towards the Burj Khalifa amidst skyscrapers. To get there, take the green metro line to Creek terminal, then cross over by abra from Al Jaddaf Marine station (CR 6 line). The fare is just 2 dirhams.

Bluewaters Island

The latest sensation near Dubai Marina, this small island is accessible by car and on foot.

Home to hotels, shops, and restaurants, its major attraction will be the Ain Dubai Ferris wheel. It operates day and night, completing a rotation in about 38 minutes.

Wild Wadi Waterpark

This popular waterpark, located next to the Burj al-Arab, is unique for its medieval Arabian architectural style.

It’s a great place to spend an afternoon with kids, though be prepared that it’s not a cheap outing!

Jumeirah Mosque

Mosques are quintessential structures in the Arab world, and Dubai has many, with the Jumeirah Mosque being particularly noteworthy.

Built in 1998, it’s a blend of traditional and modern Islamic architecture.

Tourists are allowed to enter, but be mindful of the rules! Long trousers are mandatory, and women must wear long tops and cover their hair.

Access: By bus numbers 8, 9, C10, X28, and 88 to the Palm Strip Center / Jumeirah, Grand Masjid stop.

The Jumeirah mosque is open to tourists

Boating

A popular activity is traveling by boat, offering great views along the way.

There are several routes, and I would highlight the one marked FR1. This route operates between Dubai Marina and Al Ghubaiba (the old town area). I recommend taking the boat heading to Marina, as sailing into the bay at the end provides a wonderful experience of the city’s skyline.

All information here!

Beaches

Due to the climate, the sea water is warm in summer, but can feel somewhat cool for us during winter months. Bikinis are allowed, but avoid wearing „skimpy” swimwear!

One of the most famous is JBR Beach (Marina Beach), located behind the Dubai Marina. This is a long stretch of beach where I personally sunbathed, offering a great view of the Atlantis Hotel.

Another is Jumeirah Public Beach, also known as Sunset Beach. Its unique feature is its proximity to the Burj al-Arab, making it popular for its views.

Religion

Being in an Arab country where Islam is the predominant religion, there are a few things to be mindful of. Even though Dubai is one of the most Westernized cities, it’s important to respect the main cultural norms.

Men should avoid walking around in loose tank tops, and women should steer clear of provocative attire. While there are no sanctions for this, it might attract disapproving glances.

On the beach, bikinis are fine, but again, avoid wearing „skimpy” swimwear.

Particularly during Ramadan (which falls at different times each year for us), the 9th month of the Islamic lunar calendar, Muslims do not eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. During this period, do not eat or drink in public!
