Seoul is a true Asian metropolis where modernism and historical past coexist harmoniously.

The capital of South Korea is one of the most popular tourist destinations among Asian countries, including Thais, Japanese, and Chinese. Located on both banks of the Han River, the city’s history dates back to 18 BC, when Baekje, one of the three Korean kingdoms, established its capital in the southeastern part of today’s Seoul. Seoul was the capital of historic Korea from 1394 to 1948, with a brief exception (1399-1405).

Seoul attractions

Gyeongbokgung Palace

One of Seoul’s most important historical and cultural sites. Its meaning is „Palace of Shining Happiness”.

Built in 1395 as the largest palace of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897), it served as a royal residence and governmental center. Over time, it was significantly damaged twice but today, most of the original structures are visible again.

The palace’s most impressive building is the Geunjeongjeon Hall. In the main throne room, the king handled official affairs and held ceremonies. The Gyeonghoeru Pavilion is located in the middle of an artificial lake, used for banquets and official events. The lake’s surface beautifully reflects the building.

Today, the Korean National Folk Museum is also located here, showcasing Korean culture and daily life.

Changdeokgung Palace and Huwon Garden

Another historically important building in Seoul that is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its meaning is „Palace of Prosperous Virtue”.

This was the Joseon Dynasty’s second royal residence, originally built in 1405. Destroyed during the Japanese invasion in the 16th century, it was rebuilt in 1610 and remained the residence of many kings in the following centuries.

The palace’s greatest attraction is the Huwon Garden, also known as the „Secret Garden”, exclusively reserved for the royal family. One of the garden’s most famous structures, the Juhamnu Pavilion, stands beside an artificial lake and once served as a library.

Namsan Tower (N Seoul Tower)

The 236-meter-high observation tower is located at the summit of Namsan Mountain, at an altitude of 480 meters above sea level.

The tower offers stunning views of the city on multiple levels, both day and night. Its exterior is illuminated by colorful LED lights at night. It’s famous for its „Lovers’ Locks”. On the fence at the lower level, couples traditionally place locks as a symbol of their love.

The cable car from the base of Namsan Mountain is a popular way to reach the tower. Beautiful views can be enjoyed during the journey.

All information can be found here!

Cheonggyecheon

The 11-kilometer-long creek in downtown Seoul is a popular recreational spot for locals and tourists.

Cheonggye Plaza marks the creek’s starting point, featuring a waterfall and interactive artworks. It’s a popular venue for festivals and events. Several traditional stone bridges span the creek, connecting pedestrian walkways.

Jogyesa Temple

One of Seoul’s most important Buddhist centers and temples.

This is the spiritual center of the Jogye Order, prevalent in South Korea and the largest traditional Buddhist sect in the country. Originally built in 1395, it was moved to its current location in 1910 during the Joseon Dynasty when Buddhism was marginalized in favor of Confucianism.

The temple’s main part is the Daeungjeon Hall, which houses three massive Buddha statues: Shakyamuni Buddha, the Buddha of the Past, and the Buddha of the Future. The large bronze temple bell is located in the Beomjonggak Pavilion and is used during Buddhist ceremonies.

Bukchon Hanok Village

A village full of traditional Korean hanok houses, showcasing the era of the Joseon Dynasty.

Located in central Seoul between the Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung Palaces. Due to its location, Bukchon, meaning „northern village”, was once home to aristocratic families.

These traditional houses are made of wood and paper, with characteristic tiled roofs and inner courtyards. Over 600 hanok houses exist, many of which remain in their original form. Some still function as residential homes, while others operate as museums, cultural centers, or tea houses.

Itaewon

The district is popular among locals and foreigners alike, known for its nightlife, restaurants, and clubs.

After the Korean War, the area was originally developed to cater to the nearby stationed American soldiers, which led to the construction of bars, restaurants, shops, and clubs serving them.

Gwangjang Market

One of Seoul’s oldest and most famous traditional markets.

Founded in 1905 during the Japanese occupation to create a commercial center for Koreans. It was the first permanent market in Korea.

Numerous items are sold, and many delicious foods can be tasted. For example, Bindaetteok, or mung bean pancake. This is one of the market’s most famous dishes, fried crispy and made from fresh ingredients.

Among crafts, it’s famous for traditional Korean silk, linen, and cotton fabrics used to make hanboks (traditional Korean clothing).

Perhaps the most authentic market

Deoksugung Palace

Besides the two palaces mentioned earlier, this one is worth visiting as an important historical site.

It became prominent in the late Joseon Dynasty and preserves unique traces of the modernization era. Originally a smaller noble residence, it was transformed into a royal palace after the Japanese invasion (1592-1598).

„Deoksugung” means „Palace of Loyalty and Longevity”, named by King Gojong to express his respect for the dynasty. This was the Joseon Dynasty’s last functioning royal palace, and King Gojong established the Korean Empire here in 1897.

The palace encompasses several traditional Korean buildings (such as the Junghwajeon throne room) and a European neoclassical building, the Seokjojeon. This was one of the first Western-style buildings in Korea, built as a symbol of modernization. Today it operates as a museum, showcasing the palace’s history and royal life.

Seoul weather: when is the best time to visit?

Seoul has a four-season temperate continental climate, featuring hot, rainy summers and cold, dry winters.

Spring (March-May)

Spring is mild and pleasant, with gradually warming weather. Average temperatures range between 7-20°C, and from April onwards, parks and gardens bloom with flowers. Precipitation is relatively moderate, making this one of the most ideal times for sightseeing.

Summer (June-September)

Summer is hot, humid, and often rainy. Average temperatures range between 22-30°C, but the high humidity makes it feel much hotter. The monsoon season lasts from late June to August, when heavy rains and tropical storms can occur. Due to the heat and humidity, this is less ideal for sightseeing.

Fall (September-November)

Fall is Seoul’s most pleasant season, with sunny, dry, and fresh weather. Average temperatures range between 10-22°C, and precipitation significantly decreases compared to summer. The city’s parks and mountainous areas are stunning during this time due to the colorful autumn foliage.

Winter (December-February)

Winter is cold and dry, with average temperatures ranging between -6 and 4°C. Snow is common in Seoul, and wind increases the feeling of cold. Although winter months are less favorable for sightseeing, the Christmas lights and winter sports can offer a special experience for enthusiasts.

Best time to travel:

The most ideal time to visit Seoul is during spring (March-May) and fall (September-November), when the weather is mild, dry, and particularly favorable for exploring the city.

South Korea is one of Asia’s leading countries, where you can find modernism, nature, and the past. Let’s look at 10 wonderful locations!

Its only land border is the Korean Demilitarized Zone, which it shares with North Korea. The two closest countries are China and Japan (bordered by sea). South Korea, with its great historical past, is now one of the world’s leading economic powers and a member of numerous international alliances.

Seoul

South Korea’s capital is one of Asia’s most beautiful and modern cities.

The city, lying on both banks of the Han River, has a history dating back to 18 BC, when Baekje, one of the three Korean kingdoms, established its capital in what is now the southeastern part of Seoul. The city is full of historical sites, such as the Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, and Deoksugung palaces, which recall the royal past.

Additionally, popular tourist destinations include the parks along the Han River, Namsan Park, and the Jongmyo Shrine. The Daehangno Road is popular among young people, where bars, small theaters, entertainment venues, and cafes can be found.

Jeju Island

South Korea’s largest island is located in the southern part of the country.

The volcanic island is famous for its stunning natural beauty, unique culture, and peaceful atmosphere, which is why many call it „Korea’s Hawaii.” The island became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007.

Here lies the country’s highest point, Mount Hallasan at 1,950 meters. Around the mountain are volcanic craters and lava caves, of which the Manjanggul Cave is particularly famous. The island’s coastline is dotted with stunning rocks, black sand beaches, and waterfalls, such as the Cheonjiyeon and Jeongbang waterfalls.

A unique feature is the Haenyeo female divers, who practice underwater hunting without breathing apparatus as a special tradition. This profession is part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. The island’s symbol is the Dol Hareubang (stone statues), which stand as ancient spiritual protectors along roads and gates.

Busan

South Korea’s second-largest city is located on the East Korean Sea coast.

It is the country’s most popular excursion destination among Koreans as well. Here you’ll find the most famous beach, Haeundae Beach. The approximately 1.5 km long beach has fine sand, with numerous bars and restaurants along its shore waiting for visitors.

Its historical attractions must also be mentioned. One of the most beautiful is the Haedong Yonggungsa Temple. The Buddhist temple stands on the seafront, which is a rare location as most Korean temples are found in mountains.

Busan’s cuisine is famous for its seafood. Dishes such as sannakji (live octopus), tteokbokki, and various fish soups (like milmyeon) all provide unmissable experiences. For street food lovers, BIFF Street is recommended.

Gamcheon Cultural Village

One of Busan’s most iconic attractions, often referred to as „Korea’s Santorini” due to its colorful houses.

It originally developed during the Korean War when refugees settled in the area. The village’s appearance underwent a dramatic change in 2009 when the local government and artists jointly began a cultural revitalization project. The once gray houses were painted in colors, artworks were placed, and the settlement was transformed into a tourist attraction.

The narrow streets and alleys are filled with murals, sculptures, and various artworks. The statue of the literary figure, The Little Prince, stands out as the most famous creation.

Colourful houses are spectacular

Seoraksan National Park

One of South Korea’s most beautiful natural areas has been part of UNESCO’s biosphere reserve since 1982.

At the park’s center stands Mount Seoraksan, the country’s third-highest peak (1,708 meters). Its name means „snowy rock mountain”, as its peaks are covered with snow caps in winter, making the landscape particularly picturesque.

The Ulsanbawi Rock, a massive granite rock, is one of the park’s most famous attractions. Climbing the rock is challenging, but the panorama from the summit offers an unforgettable experience. The Buddhist Sinheungsa temple is famous for its huge bronze Buddha statue and atmospheric ambiance.

The summit is one of the most beautiful parts of the park

Gyeongju

Often referred to as a „living outdoor museum”, the city is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

For more than 1,000 years, it was the center of the Silla Kingdom, which became the first unified kingdom of the Korean peninsula. During its heyday, the city was one of Asia’s most flourishing cultural centers. The architectural wonders of the Silla period, Buddhist art relics, and remnants of traditional Korean culture can still be found today.

The Bulguksa Temple is one of Korean Buddhism’s most important sanctuaries. Its wonderful carvings and architecture are outstanding. Another important temple is Seokguram Grotto. This beautifully carved cave sanctuary houses a massive Buddha statue. The Cheomseongdae Observatory is one of the world’s oldest surviving observatories, dating from the 7th century.

Boseong Tea Plantations

South Korea’s largest tea-growing regions are famous for their premium quality green teas.

The most famous is the Daehan Dawon tea plantation, which is open to visitors. The view of the organized, terraced tea fields is particularly picturesque, especially early in the morning or at sunset. The area’s cafes and restaurants offer many specialties, such as green tea ice cream, pastries, noodles, and even meats seasoned with green tea salt.

The teas produced here are highly valued both in Korea and internationally for their special taste, aroma, and excellent quality.

Andong Hahoe Village

One of South Korea’s best-preserved traditional villages is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The name Hahoe means „river embracing”, referring to the village’s geographical location, as it lies along the S-shaped Nakdong River. Among the hanoks are richly decorated noble residences and simpler, common houses, reflecting the social hierarchy.

It was established during the Joseon Dynasty and has been inhabited through multiple generations since then. The village’s uniqueness lies in the fact that it was home to a single clan, the Ryu family, for centuries. This community has preserved its traditions to this day.

Nami Island

One of the country’s most popular tourist destinations is located about 60 km from Seoul.

The island’s true popularity, however, began in the 2000s: some scenes from the Korean television series „Winter Sonata” were filmed here, giving the location international fame.

Its most famous attractions are the carefully arranged tree lanes. The rows of metasequoia trees, larches, birch trees, and ginkgo trees create a special sight. It’s especially worth visiting in autumn when the red foliage creates a wonderful landscape.

Additionally, numerous leisure activities are available. Sailing on the Bukhangang River or participating in water sports is popular. For adventure seekers, the island can be reached via an impressive zipline that crosses over the river.

DMZ

The Demilitarized Zone is one of the Korean Peninsula’s most interesting locations, stretching between South and North Korea.

This 4-kilometer-wide and 250-kilometer-long zone was established in 1953 as part of the armistice agreement between the two countries. The zone was created based on the 1953 Panmunjom armistice agreement and has remained in the world’s spotlight ever since.

From the Dorasan Observatory, visitors can get a glimpse into North Korean territory. On clear days, nearby North Korean cities, farms, and the famous propaganda village (Kijong-dong), built by the northern side for propaganda purposes, are visible.
