Funchal is situated on the southern coast of the island in a natural bay, and with approximately 110,000 inhabitants, it is home to half of Madeira’s population. The city – whose name derives from the Portuguese word funcho, meaning “fennel” – was founded by Portuguese explorers in the 15th century and quickly became an important trading port. Today it attracts visitors with its remarkable sights, flower-filled parks, the architecture of the Portuguese colonial era, and a climate that is unique in a European context.

Monte Palace Tropical Garden

It situated on Monte Hill above Funchal, is one of the most visited natural attractions on the entire island of Madeira.

The garden’s history dates back to the 18th century, when British consul Charles Murray purchased the estate and created a grand park on it. In the 19th century, the palace-like residence of Monte Palace – which for a time operated as a hotel – opened to the public as a tropical garden from the 1980s onwards.

The multi-level, terraced garden conceals a wealth of exotic plants, laurel trees, ferns, water lilies, as well as picturesque waterfalls and ponds. A particularly striking sight is the large panels made from azulejo (Portuguese glazed tiles), several metres high, depicting the island’s history and legends. The garden also houses a privately owned mineral collection, regarded as one of the largest of its kind in the world.

Jardim Botânico

The gardens on the slopes of the Quinta do Bom Sucesso estate cover more than 80,000 square meters and, thanks to their rich collection of plants, showcase exotic species from many parts of the world.

The carefully designed terraces and colorful flower beds create a wonderful setting. The park also features a small natural history museum and a bird sanctuary where visitors can observe rare species up close.

Teleferico da Madeira

The gondola lift departing near the old town is one of Funchal’s most popular activities, which almost every visitor makes a point of experiencing. The 3,200-metre cable car rises to an altitude of 560 metres above sea level, reaching Monte Hill in just 15 minutes. The specially designed gondolas offer a 360-degree panorama of the city, the Atlantic Ocean, and the volcanic highlands.

The cable car has two lines in Funchal: one departs from the seafront promenade and goes to the Monte Palace gardens, while the other continues from there to the Botanical Garden. The views are particularly stunning in the morning and late afternoon.

The cable car ride is a tourist experience in itself, but those visiting Monte Hill should also stop at the Nossa Senhora do Monte church – the resting place of Charles IV, the last King of Hungary, who was beatified by Pope John Paul II.

Nossa Senhora do Monte Church

The Our Lady of Monte Basilica (Nossa Senhora do Monte), rising on Monte Hill, is one of the most important pilgrimage sites on Madeira. The white, twin-towered baroque-style church was consecrated in 1818 on the site of an earlier 15th-century chapel, of which legend has it that one of the first discoverers of Madeira first caught sight of a child living on the island.

The church holds a particularly deep Hungarian connection: here lies Charles IV, the last ruler of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, who lived in exile on Madeira after his abdication and died in Funchal in 1922. Pope John Paul II beatified him in 2004, and his statue and image appear on numerous Madeiran devotional objects. The steps leading to the church offer a splendid view of the city and the bay.

Also on Monte Hill, near the basilica is the Quinta do Monte villa, which was once the home of Charles IV and today operates as an elegant hotel. The pilgrimage site and its Hungarian connections make this a particularly special visit, best reached by the Teleferico cable car.

Mercado dos Lavradores

Built in 1940, the farmers’ market is one of Funchal’s most iconic gathering places. The art déco-style building’s facade is adorned with traditional azulejo tiles, while inside, a market that engages all the senses awaits visitors, showcasing Madeiran flavours, aromas, and colours.

The market offers a wide variety of the island’s exotic fruits – papaya, passion fruit, banana, pineapple – as well as local vegetables. On the lower level, one of Madeira’s largest fish markets operates, where the espada (black scabbardfish) takes centre stage; this deep-sea fish species is one of the island’s gastronomic specialities.

It is worth arriving early, as fresh produce sells out by noon and the market quiets down significantly.

Zona Velha

Funchal’s old town, the Zona Velha, was once a simple fishing quarter, but has since become one of the city’s most atmospheric and most frequently visited districts.

One of the quarter’s distinctive features is the Arte de Portas Abertas project: the doors of several hundred residential buildings in the district are decorated with works by local and international artists. This initiative, which can also be considered an open-air gallery, began in the early 2010s and has since become a postcard-worthy decoration of the Zona Velha.

At the eastern end of the district stands the São Tiago Fortress (Forte de São Tiago), built in 1614 to protect the harbour. With its yellow facade and ocean-facing bastions, it remains a defining element of the skyline today, and its walls host temporary exhibitions. The seafront promenade leads from here to the more modern part of the city, offering fine views of the harbour and anchored ships along the way.

Sé Cathedral

The Sé Cathedral, located in the heart of Funchal on an elegant pedestrian street, is the island’s most significant Late Gothic building, whose construction began in 1493 and was completed in 1508.

Behind the plain, whitewashed exterior lies a monumental interior: the ceiling presents rows of coffered panels carved from local cedar and ivory, reflecting the Iberian Moorish (Mudéjar) influence.

The cathedral’s 55-metre tower is clad in Sevillian azulejo tiles – a motif that is virtually unique in Portugal. In front of the building stands a statue of Pope John Paul II, erected to commemorate his 1991 visit to Madeira. The interior’s high altar is framed by a 16th-century polyptych in the Portuguese-Flemish Late Gothic style – an outstanding work of religious art.

Palácio de São Lourenço

The São Lourenço Palace, situated on Funchal’s seafront promenade, is the island’s first fortress, constructed between 1529 and 1540, shortly after the Portuguese colonisation of the island. The building served not only as a military stronghold but also as the seat of Portuguese colonial administration; today it houses the representation of the Autonomous Region of Madeira and a military museum.

The palace’s collection of decorative arts is outstanding: the former state rooms display 16th–20th century furniture, Flemish tapestries, portraits of European nobility, and relics of the Portuguese Crown. The inner courtyard, the red-brick facade, and the bastions overlooking the Atlantic Ocean together create a remarkable image.

A visit is recommended for all those interested in Portuguese and Madeiran history, or in Iberian Baroque and Renaissance courtly culture. With its viewing terrace overlooking Funchal Bay and its carefully restored rooms, it is one of the capital’s most impressive heritage sites.

Colégio Church

The church in the city centre (Igreja do Colégio) was built by the Jesuits in the early 17th century, as part of a college and boarding school established by the religious order.

Until the 19th century, it was the largest building in Funchal, and with its facade on the cusp of Mannerist and Baroque styles, and its richly decorated interior, it is considered one of the best-preserved churches of its era and style.

The exterior facade, adorned with white-and-black basalt carvings, creates a distinctive contrast. Inside, the gilded wood carvings (talha dourada), painted tile surfaces, and inlaid flooring all evoke the pinnacle achievements of 17th–18th century Iberian Baroque. In 2008, the church also received a magnificent organ, inaugurated by Dutch organist Tom Koopman.

Santa Catarina Park

Funchal’s largest and best-maintained public park, Parque de Santa Catarina, is located near the seafront promenade and the western part of the city. The 36,000-square-metre green space offers flower beds, fountains, a small lake, and pleasant walking paths for relaxation; from the park’s hilly terrain, there is a fine view of Funchal Bay.

A particularly notable feature of the park for Hungarian visitors is the statue of Queen Elizabeth (Sissi) standing beside the Quinta Vigia villa. Empress Elizabeth of Austria and Queen of Hungary visited Madeira twice – in 1860 and in 1894–1895 – spending several months on the island in total. During her first visit, she stayed at the Quinta Vigia villa itself; her memorial statue has been placed on the nearby park promenade.

Between March and September it is open until the evening, and is a regular venue for festivals, cultural events, and open-air concerts. The Quinta Vigia villa today serves as the residence of the President of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

Best museums in Funchal

CR7 Museum

The museum, opened near the harbour on Avenida Sá Carneiro, was inaugurated on 15 December 2013, close to the birthplace of Madeiran football star Cristiano Ronaldo.

The museum was created at Ronaldo’s own initiative, so that Funchal would host the venue where the highlights of his career, his trophies, and personal memorabilia are on display.

The 400-square-metre exhibition space features more than 150 individual and team trophies: among them the five Ballon d’Or awards (2008, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017), four Golden Boots, and medals from league and cup victories with the national team and club teams. Interactive displays, photographs, videos, and a wax figure complete the exhibition. In front of the museum stands a bronze statue depicting the player, created by Madeiran sculptor Ricardo Velosa.

Blandy’s Wine Lodge

The museum on Avenida Arriaga is the most representative venue for the history of Madeiran wine.

The wine cellars, converted from the São Francisco convent, have been in operation since the 17th century, and the Madeiran wines stored here are among the world’s most renowned. The Blandy family, a British wine-trading dynasty, has managed the winery since the 19th century, and it remains one of the region’s defining economic and cultural institutions.

The vast cellars filled with oak barrels offer a walkable exhibition: visitors can learn about Madeira wine’s unique canteiro ageing process, in which the barrels spend their years not in a cellar but in warm attic spaces, undergoing slow oxidative maturation. The collection includes vintages of over a hundred years – a rarity on the world wine market.

Madeira Story Centre

Opened in 2005 with the aim of presenting Madeira’s history from the island’s 15-million-year geological past right up to contemporary cultural life. The museum is housed in a renovated 17th-century merchant’s house, which is itself a valuable piece of architectural heritage.

The exhibition takes visitors chronologically and thematically through the island’s volcanic origins, the era of Portuguese colonisation, the rise of the sugar cane and wine industries, the emergence of 19th-century British and aristocratic tourism, and on to the identity of modern Madeira.

Particularly recommended for those wishing to understand the roots of Madeiran culture, local gastronomy, and the island’s unique folk traditions.

Funchal weather: when is the best time to visit?

The climate of Funchal – and of Madeira more broadly – is classified as a Mediterranean oceanic climate, shaped by the balancing influence of the Gulf Stream. The island is not without reason called the “Island of Eternal Spring”: there are no extreme heatwaves and no harsh winters, the annual average temperature ranges between 18–22°C, and only two distinct seasons can be distinguished – a warmer, drier summer half-year and a rainier, cooler winter period.

Winter (December–February):

Temperature: 14–19°C. More rainfall, with January being the rainiest month. Fewer tourists, lower prices. Christmas and New Year have a special atmosphere, with fireworks.

Spring (March–May):

Temperature: 17–22°C. Gradually less rain, lush green landscape, abundant flowers. April–May: the time of the Funchal Flower Festival, the ideal period for most tourists.

Summer (June–September):

Temperature: 23–27°C. Almost no rain, especially in the south. The sea is also at its warmest: 21–23°C. Peak season, higher prices and more visitors.

Autumn (October–November):

Temperature: 20–25°C. October is the time of the harvest wine festival. Rain returns towards the end of October, but temperatures remain pleasant. Less crowded than summer.

Best time to visit to Funchal:

The generally best time to visit Funchal is April–May and September–October. In spring, the island is at its most beautiful amid a burst of flowers: the Funchal Flower Festival (two weeks after Easter) decorates almost the entire city; daytime temperatures reach 20–22°C, rain is rare, and tourist crowds have not yet reached their summer peak. Múlafossur Waterfall

Sørvágsvatn Lake

This unique lake creates an optical illusion, as if floating above the sea. In reality, it sits about 30 meters above sea level, but from the right angle, it appears to hover high above the waves. The attraction on Vágar island is easily accessible via a hiking trail.

During the hike, you follow a simple path suitable even for beginner hikers. The landscape is varied: pastures, rocky sections, and unparalleled viewpoints alternate. Reaching the lake shore, you’ll understand why this place became famous worldwide.

The nearby Trælanípa cliff wall looks down on the ocean from a stunning height. Many combine the lake hike with visiting the cliffs, so you can see both natural wonders in one trip. The wind can be very strong here, so it’s worth approaching the cliff edge carefully.

Gjógv

In the north, on Eysturoy island, lies this charming little village, which takes its name from a natural gorge in the cliffs. The gorge also serves as the village harbor, where fishing boats are protected from the open sea waves.

The village counts only a few dozen residents, but the hospitality here is enormous. Colorful houses line the hillside, their grass-covered roofs harmoniously blending into the landscape.

Kalsoy Island and Kallur Lighthouse

The island’s nickname is „the flute” – and not without reason, as its long and narrow shape resembles this instrument. The island, accessible through tunnels, hides four tiny villages where practically only sheep and birds roam. The lighthouse standing at the island’s northern tip is one of the most visited places in the Faroe Islands.

The hike to Kallur Lighthouse is moderately difficult, but the view is worth every step. Along the path, countless bird species nest in summer, including puffins. From the lighthouse, you’re greeted by views of endless ocean and green mountains in every direction.

You can reach the island by ferry, which is an experience in itself. During the journey, you can get close to the high cliffs and observe marine life. In stormy weather, the ferry service may be canceled, so it’s worth checking the weather and schedule in advance.

Vestmanna Bird Cliffs

The cliffs running along the western coast are a true paradise for bird lovers. On a boat tour, you can see bird colonies nesting on the high cliff walls up close, where thousands live together. The tour also takes the boat into caves and narrow passages if weather permits.

Masses of puffins, guillemots, and kittiwakes populate the cliffs. The birds’ screeching and the crashing waves create a unique sound concert. The vertical cliff walls rise to heights of several hundred meters, where cascading waterfalls and green vegetation form a colorful mosaic.

The tour is most interesting in spring and early summer when the birds hatch their chicks. The boat captains know the best spots precisely and gladly share local stories.

Saksun

This fairytale village sits in a natural amphitheater surrounded by high mountains.

The lagoon at the valley bottom changes its character with the tides, sometimes a lake, sometimes a muddy area. The village consists of just a few houses, but every building is beautifully preserved. The road leading to the village is an adventure in itself, narrow and winding, but offering beautiful views.

The old Dúvugarðar wooden house functions as a museum, showcasing traditional Faroese life. The grass roofs and traditional black-painted wooden walls perfectly illustrate how people lived here generations ago.

Mykines Island

The westernmost island is one of the Faroe Islands’ most iconic places, where nature still reigns. The island can only be reached by ferry, and during stormy periods, travel becomes impossible for days. Only a few permanent residents live on the island, but tourists and researchers arrive in summer.

The puffin colonies are the island’s main attractions, especially on the small island of Mykineshólmur, accessible by a footbridge. From June to August, thousands nest here, entertaining visitors with their colorful beaks and comical movements. Bird watching here is an unforgettable experience.

Walking along the paths on the island, you can follow the coastal cliffs. The area around the lighthouse offers wonderful panoramas of the surrounding islands.

Tjørnuvík

This northern village sits in the shadow of two massive sea stacks that, according to local legends, are trolls. The contrast between the black sand beach and green mountains creates a special sight.

The stacks called Risin og Kellingin are 71 and 68 meters tall, rising from the open ocean. Legend has it that a troll couple tried to tow the islands to Iceland, but sunrise turned them to stone. Hiking trails from the village offer excellent views of these natural wonders.

In summer, the village beach is popular among locals, though the water remains cold even then. The surrounding mountains’ hiking trails vary in difficulty, so everyone can find a suitable challenge.

Kirkjubøur

This historic village is the cultural heart of the Faroe Islands. The village’s soul consists of St. Olaf’s Church and the ruins of the unfinished St. Magnus Cathedral. The Roykstovan wooden house is reportedly one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited wooden buildings, in use since the 11th century.

The Gothic-style remains of the ruined cathedral date from the 1300s, when construction halted. The functioning St. Olaf’s Church remains a site of religious ceremonies, and locals take pride in its historical significance.

The village coastline offers beautiful walking paths with views of Hestur and Koltur islands. The local family, living in the Roykstovan house for generations, sometimes gives demonstrations of traditional life. It’s easily accessible from Tórshavn by bus or car, making it a perfect half-day trip.

Funningur and Funningsfjørður

This twin settlement sits on the eastern coast of Eysturoy island, where locals live peaceful lives among the fjord’s bends. The road between the villages offers fantastic views of the sea and surrounding mountains.

Hiking trails from the villages lead up to surrounding peaks, from where a 360-degree panorama unfolds. Paved paths accompany the water along the coast, where small bridges and streams make the landscape diverse.

You can often see seals in the fjord, playfully swimming at the water’s surface. Fishing remains an important part of the local economy, and you’ll often see fishermen at work in the harbor. This area is less visited, making it ideal for those wanting to avoid crowds.

Slættaratindur

At 880 meters high, the Faroe Islands’ highest point is every hiker’s dream. The route to the summit on Eysturoy island contains sections of varying difficulty, but well-marked paths help climbers. On clear days, most of the islands are visible from the peak, and you can even see Iceland.

During the hike, you experience every element of the Faroese landscape: pastures, rocky sections, streams, and waterfalls. Vegetation gradually becomes sparse as you ascend. Rising fog often creates a magical atmosphere on the mountainside.

Routes to the summit start from different villages, but the most popular starts from Gjógv. In summer, the days are long, so you can even start the hike in late afternoon.

Drangarnir

These two monumental sea stacks rise out of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Vágar Island.

The larger one is about 80 meters high, while the smaller one is 60 meters high. A natural stone bridge spans between the two stacks, creating a unique sight. A difficult hiking trail leads to the cliffs from the village of Sørvágur, which is recommended for experienced hikers.

Lake Bunyonyi

Located in southwestern Uganda, this „lake of little birds” is one of Africa’s deepest lakes at nearly 900 meters. The lake encompasses 29 islands, several of which are inhabited, each with its own story or legend.

The terraced hillsides rising around the lake show the local population’s centuries-old agricultural traditions. The water is extremely clean and safe for swimming, as no crocodiles or hippos live in it. Punishment Island has historical significance as the former site of the tradition of „punishing” pre-marital pregnancy.

Source of the White Nile

Located in Jinja on the shores of Lake Victoria, this is the source of the world’s longest river, which was a mystery to explorers for millennia. John Hanning Speke discovered this location in 1862, solving the millennia-old mystery of the Nile’s source.

The source area is now a beautiful park where visitors can witness the moment when Lake Victoria’s water begins its long journey toward the Mediterranean Sea. The Speke Monument commemorates the explorer. The nearby Bujagali Falls, though now dammed by a hydroelectric plant, still offers an impressive sight.

Jinja town itself is an interesting destination where rafting and other water sports await adventure seekers. White Nile rafting is world-renowned, with class one to six rapids challenging paddlers of all experience levels.

Mount Elgon

This extinct volcano stretching along the Uganda-Kenya border is Africa’s eighth highest mountain, with its highest point, Wagagai Peak, at 4,321 meters. The mountain’s specialty is one of the world’s largest volcanic calderas, 40 kilometers in diameter.

Mount Elgon National Park’s rich ecosystem encompasses different vegetation zones: from montane forests through alpine meadows to marshy highland areas. The mountain is famous for elephant caves, where pachyderms have been coming for millennia to lick salt from natural salt caves.

Mountain climbing is possible on various routes, from multi-day treks to easier day trips. The Sipi route is the most popular, passing through beautiful waterfalls. More than 300 bird species are found on the mountain, including Jackson’s francolin, which lives only here. The flora is also unique, with several endemic orchid species.

Sipi Falls

Located on the slopes of Mount Elgon near the Kenyan border, this three-tiered waterfall system is one of Uganda’s most beautiful natural sights. The waterfalls cascade from a total height of 100 meters in three separate stages.

The uppermost waterfall is 85 meters high and the most imposing, while the lower two stages are smaller but equally beautiful. Lush coffee plantations spread around the waterfalls, whose visit allows us to learn about traditional methods of growing local arabica coffee.

The hiking trails leading to Sipi Falls vary in difficulty, from easy walks to multi-day mountain treks. The routes offer breathtaking views of the Karamoja plains and distant mountain peaks. Local guides demonstrate the area’s rich flora and fauna, as well as the use of traditional medicinal plants.

Itanda Falls

This natural rock formation and waterfall system in the White Nile near Jinja forms one of the river’s most exciting sections.

Itanda is not a single large waterfall but a series of rocky rapids and whirlpools that challenge even experienced rafters. The diverse birdlife and rich biodiversity of the aquatic ecosystem make this location special.

The waterfall area shows special geological formations where granite rocks have shaped their current form over millions of years. The water’s force has carved out the rock, creating natural pools and slides. According to local traditions, Itanda has spiritual significance, and numerous legends are woven around it.

Budongo Forest

Uganda’s largest natural forest is part of Murchison Falls National Park. This tropical rainforest spans more than 465 square kilometers and is home to more than 500 chimpanzees.

The forest is one of the best locations for chimpanzee tracking in Uganda. Regular tours in the Kaniyo Pabidi and Busingiro areas allow observation of these intelligent primates in their natural environment. The forest is home to more than 360 bird species, including rare and endemic species.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

The „Impenetrable Forest” National Park is located in Uganda’s southwestern corner and is considered one of the world’s most biodiverse forests. The park’s 331 square kilometer area protects ancient rainforest that has remained unchanged for more than 25,000 years.

Its main attraction is mountain gorilla observation. Bwindi is home to more than 400 mountain gorillas, about half of the world’s total population. During gorilla tracking, we can approach these magnificent animals in small groups accompanied by trained guides and armed rangers.

The park consists of four sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo, each home to separate gorilla families. The forest provides habitat for more than 120 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 200 butterfly species. Hiking trails vary in difficulty, from easy nature walks to multi-day expeditions.

Murchison Falls National Park

Uganda’s largest national park stretches between the White Nile, Victoria Nile, and Lake Albert. The park’s namesake is Murchison Falls, where the Nile plunges 45 meters deep through a 7-meter-wide rocky gorge.

The waterfall’s force is so great that the water’s spray can be heard for kilometers, and rainbows often form from the mist. The lower pool called „Devil’s Cauldron” offers an impressive sight with its roaring and swirling water. Kibale National Park

The national park bearing the title „primate capital” is located in western Uganda and boasts one of Africa’s highest primate diversities. The park is home to 13 different primate species, including more than 1,500 chimpanzees.

Chimpanzee tracking here is the best organized and most successful in Uganda, with a success rate of more than 90%. The chimpanzee groups living in the Kanyanchu area have become accustomed to human presence, allowing close observation. Besides chimpanzees, red colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and L’Hoest’s monkeys can also be observed.

The park’s tropical rainforest provides habitat for more than 375 bird species, including rare African species. Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary near the park is a community-managed conservation project where special bird species and other wildlife can be observed.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

One of Uganda’s most famous national parks is located on the Equator line and shows stunning diversity from savannas through rainforests to wetland habitats. The park was named in honor of Queen Elizabeth II in 1954.

The park’s specialty is the tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector. This rare behavior can only be observed in a few places in the world and provides an impressive sight when these large predators rest in the branches of fig trees. The park’s rich wildlife also includes elephant herds, buffalo, and hippos.

The Kazinga Channel, which connects Lake George and Lake Edward, is home to one of Africa’s highest hippo concentrations. Boating on the lake allows close approach to hippos and crocodiles, while lakeside walks reveal various antelope species. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Uganda’s smallest national park protects the Ugandan portion of three volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains: Gahinga, Muhabura, and Sabinyo. The park’s name comes from the word „gahinga”, meaning fence built from volcanic stones in the local language.

The park’s main attraction is mountain gorilla tracking, and it’s also home to Uganda’s only habituated gorilla group. The Nyakagezi gorilla family counts 8-10 members and is available for regular observation. The park is also the only habitat for golden monkeys in Uganda.

All three volcanoes can be climbed in one day. The Sabinyo peak’s specialty is that three countries can be seen simultaneously from here: Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park also provides a home for Batwa pygmy tribes who demonstrate their traditional forest lifestyle.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

This 7,000-hectare reserve is the center of the white rhino reintroduction program in Uganda. It was established in 1998 with the goal of bringing rhinos back to Uganda after the last wild specimens were exterminated in the 1980s.

Currently, more than 30 white rhinos live in the reserve, and the population is continuously growing. During tours, these magnificent animals can be approached on foot or by car, always accompanied by trained guides.

Semuliki National Park

Tourist traffic reaches its peak during two periods. The winter sports season begins in December and ends at the end of March. The summer season from July to September 15th is even more popular. The mountain range’s characteristic light gray limestone towers rise here in a particularly dramatic way above the green pastures.

Seceda’s specialty lies in its varied hiking opportunities. From easy walks to challenging via ferratas for experienced mountaineers, every difficulty level can be found here. Alpe di Siusi

Europe’s largest high-altitude pasture, a magical plateau of 57 square kilometers between 1,680-2,350 meters. This unique natural environment harmoniously combines Alpine meadows, traditional Tyrolean wooden houses, and the sight of steeply rising Dolomite peaks.

The pasture’s history goes back centuries, when local farmers drove their animals here in summer. Traditional mountain farms still operate today, where we can taste fresh cheeses and other Tyrolean specialties.

In winter, it becomes a destination for cross-country skiers and winter hikers, when snow buries the green meadows under a thick blanket. Sella Pass (Passo Sella)

The 2,244-meter-high Sella Pass is one of the busiest crossings in the Dolomites, connecting four valleys: Val Gardena, Val di Fassa, Val Badia, and Livinallongo del Col di Lana valleys. Due to the pass’s central location, it plays a key role in the region’s tourism network.

The Sella Ronda, one of the world’s most famous ski circuits, starts from here. In summer, it’s a paradise for cyclists and motorcyclists, as the serpentine roads offer excellent views of the surrounding peaks.

The cable car from the pass to the top of Sass Pordoi provides direct access to the 2,950-meter „Terrace of the Dolomites”, from where on clear days you can even glimpse the distant Ortler peak. This viewpoint is particularly popular during sunset times.

The geological richness of the pass area is exceptional: here dark volcanic rock meets light Dolomite limestone, creating a special contrast in the landscape. The Pordoi Pass Museum here presents the area’s geological development and World War I events in detail. Sassolungo Group

One of the most recognizable and photographed mountain ranges in the Dolomites, whose 3,181-meter main peak confidently dominates the surrounding landscape.

It consists of five main peaks, of which Sassopiatto (3,026 m) is the most famous alongside Sassolungo. These steep peaks, divided by vertical walls, offer a monumental sight, especially when viewed from Alpe di Siusi.

The mountain group is extremely interesting from a geological perspective: coral reefs from the Triassic period shaped its current form, which explains the characteristic light color and the terraced structure alternating with steep walls. Tofane Mountain Group

The group’s three main peaks – Tofana di Rozes (3,225 m), Tofana di Mezzo (3,244 m), and Tofana di Dentro (3,238 m) – tower above Cortina d’Ampezzo.

These massive peaks, divided by steep walls, offer a monumental sight especially when viewed from the south side. The Tofane’s geological structure is exceptionally varied: the alternation of dark gray main dolomite and lighter limestone layers draws a special pattern on the rocks.

During World War I, the Tofane became strategically important, and numerous historical monuments still preserve the events of that time. The Via Ferrata delle Trincee („trenches via ferrata”) offers a unique hiking experience, as it leads through wartime trenches and bunkers. The Lagazuoi tunnel, which Italian soldiers blew under Austrian positions, now operates as a museum and provides insight into the difficulties of mountain warfare.

The Tofane area’s hiking opportunities are extremely varied: from easy family hikes to extreme rock climbing, everything can be found. Rifugio Giussani and Rifugio Dibona are excellent starting points for exploring higher regions, while the Ra Valles ski lift makes the middle altitudes easily accessible.

Marmolada

Also called the „Queen of the Dolomites” as it contains the mountain range’s highest point, the 3,343-meter Punta Penia.

This imposing mountain range differs from other Dolomite peaks not only in size but also in character: a huge glacier covers the summit regions, which is the Dolomites’ only significant glacier. However, the Marmolada glacier is continuously shrinking due to climate change, giving special significance to visiting it.

The massif’s southern wall is the Dolomites’ largest and steepest rock face, rising more than 1,000 meters above the valley. This „Silver Wall” is beloved by rock climbers, where some of the world’s most difficult climbing routes can be found. The Via Ferrata delle Trincee also runs through the World War I front line here, where Italian and Austro-Hungarian troops fought in the icy heights.

The Marmolada cable car system allows visitors to easily reach 3,265 meters altitude, from where a breathtaking panorama opens over the entire Dolomite mountain range. Villnöss Valley (Val di Funes)

Perhaps the most photographed Alpine landscape in the world, where the small church of St. Magdalena against the backdrop of the Odle mountain group creates an image that has appeared on countless postcards, calendars, and tourist publications.

The valley’s cultural heritage is special: the population still speaks German today and preserves the traditional Tyrolean architectural style. The peasant houses decorated with carved wooden balconies, the onion-domed church towers, and the traditional form of hayricks create an authentic Alpine atmosphere. The farmers living here still cultivate their lands using traditional methods and make their famous cheeses and meat products.

It’s also known as a hiking paradise: the Adolf Munkel Weg starts from here, which is the valley’s most beautiful panorama route. During the hike, we walk through flowering meadows, cross streams, and can continuously admire the changing faces of the Odle group. The Zanser Alm at the upper end of the valley is a particularly popular destination, from where a short hike leads to the heart of Puez-Odle Nature Park.

Fassa Valley (Val di Fassa)

It belongs to the last bastions of Ladin culture, where a significant part of the population still speaks this ancient Romance dialect today.

Canazei, the valley’s central settlement, is one of the most important tourist centers in the Dolomites. From here, cable cars depart to Belvedere and Col Rodella, from where there’s an unparalleled view of the Marmolada and Sella sections. Rosengarten Group (Catinaccio)

The mountain group boasts one of the most romantic legends of the Dolomites.

According to tradition, the dwarf king Laurin planted his kingdom with roses, which still make the rocks glow red at sunset – this is the „Enrosadira” phenomenon. The rock towers grouped around the 3,004-meter main peak Catinaccio d’Antermoia offer the most beautiful sight especially when viewed from Lake Carezza.

Among the several Via Ferratas around Rosengarten, the Santner and Laurin routes are the most popular, offering unforgettable experiences for intermediate-level hikers. The surrounding rifugios, especially Rifugio Vajolet and Rifugio Re Alberto, are excellent accommodations.

Bletterbach Gorge

Often referred to as „South Tyrol’s Grand Canyon”: the 8-kilometer-long and 400-meter-deep geological wonder reveals 15 million years of Earth’s history.

40 different rock layers can be observed on the gorge walls, including 280-200 million-year-old Permian red sandstone and the famous dinosaur footprints.

During the gorge tour, numerous fossils and rock samples can be studied: marine shells, corals, and plant remains tell of the time when this area still lay under a tropical sea. The hiking trail is equipped with professional explanatory boards that help understand the phenomena seen. The gorge is a protected natural area, so it can only be visited with a guide.

Around Bletterbach is the Geopark museum, which makes the area’s geological specialties even more understandable with interactive exhibitions and 3D models. The gorge can also be visited in winter, when icicles and snow-covered rock walls create a magical winter landscape.

Most beautiful lakes in the Dolomites

Lago di Carezza

Lake Carezza bears the name „Pearl of the Dolomites”: a magical mountain lake 85 meters long and 295 meters wide, lying at 1,534 meters altitude at the foot of the Catinaccio group.

The lake’s water color constantly changes: from turquoise to emerald green, from deep blue to almost black shades, depending on light conditions and seasons. This color play is due to the lake’s special mineral composition and light refraction.

According to Ladin legend, the lake was created when a wizard failed to seduce a water fairy, so in anger he threw his emeralds and pearls into the lake. The walk around the lake can be completed in about 40 minutes and offers numerous photo spots with the peaks of the Latemar mountain group towering in the background.

The forests around the lake are extremely varied: spruces, silver firs, and red pines alternate, among which numerous rare plant and animal species live. The Carezza ski area near the lake provides excellent skiing opportunities in winter, while in summer you can hike around the Latemar group.

Lago di Braies

Commonly known as „Pragser Wildsee”, it is the Dolomites’ largest natural lake and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful sights in the mountain range.

The 31-hectare lake at 1,496 meters altitude perfectly reflects the surrounding Seekofel (2,810 m) and Croda del Becco (2,810 m) peaks in its emerald green water surface. The lake’s special color is due to limestone dissolved in the water and light reflection, which creates different shades on the water surface at different times of day.

The 3.5-kilometer walking path around the lake offers a breathtaking experience in every season: in spring the lakeside meadows are full of wildflowers, in summer the forests provide cool shade, in autumn the colorful foliage of deciduous trees reflects in the water, and in winter the frozen lake and snow-covered surroundings create a fairytale atmosphere. At the southern end of the lake is the Pragser Wildsee Hotel, which was already a favorite resort of the monarchy’s aristocracy at the end of the 19th century.

Several hiking trails start from around the lake toward the surrounding peaks: the Dürrenstein viewpoint can be reached with a 2.5-hour hike, while experienced hikers can undertake climbing Seekofel. Boating is also available at the lake, though this can only be used during summer months.

Lago di Misurina

Lake Misurina lies at 1,754 meters altitude and is rightfully called the „Mirror of the Dolomites” as the surrounding peaks are perfectly reflected in its crystal-clear water: the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the Cristallo group, and the rock towers of Cadini di Misurina.

The 15-hectare lake is of natural origin, and its special microclimate is considered healing: the allergology institute has been receiving patients suffering from respiratory diseases for decades.

The 2.6-kilometer walking path around the lake is an easy, family-friendly hike, during which we can admire the panorama of the surrounding mountains. The Grand Hotel Misurina on the northern shore of the lake has historical significance: several famous personalities stayed here, and the hotel itself is part of the lake’s romantic atmosphere. In winter it freezes completely and is also suitable for ice skating.

Lago di Sorapis

Lake Sorapis is perhaps the most uniquely colored lake in the Dolomites: its water is intense turquoise blue, creating an almost surreal effect among the gray rocks.

The lake’s special color is due to rock flour suspended in the water, which comes from the erosive activity of surrounding glaciers. Despite the lake’s small size, it is deep, and the water temperature remains very low even in summer.

The lake at 1,923 meters altitude lies at the foot of the Sorapis group and can only be reached on foot during an approximately 3-hour hike from Misurina. The hiking trail initially passes through forested areas, then leads to increasingly rocky terrain before reaching the lake’s wild romantic environment.

Access to the lake is made difficult by the fact that the last section of the route is equipped with safety ropes, so basic mountaineering experience is required. During the hike, there’s an unparalleled view of the Cristallo group and the distant Tre Cime di Lavaredo peaks. The Sorapis lake area is particularly popular among nature photographers.

Bolzano

The capital of South Tyrol serves as the gateway to the Dolomites, where Austrian and Italian cultures blend.

The capital of the Gardena Valley considers itself one of the most important centers of Ladin culture, where trilingual daily life in German, Italian, and Ladin is still a living tradition. The settlement’s special charm comes from being located in a narrow valley basin, surrounded by the breathtaking panorama of Seceda, Rasciesa, and Alpe di Siusi.

The city is world-famous for its wood carving tradition, which has been practiced here since the 17th century. The works of Gardena Valley wood carvers can be found all over the world, especially among religious-themed sculptures. In Ortisei’s pedestrian street, numerous wood carving workshops and galleries can be found, where you can buy these unique creations directly from the masters.

The Seceda cable car starts directly from the center and takes you up to one of the most beautiful viewpoints in just a few minutes. In winter, Ortisei is part of the Dolomiti Superski area, and in summer it’s the starting point for numerous hiking trails.

San Candido (Innichen)

Located at the eastern end of the Pusteria Valley, it is rightfully considered one of the most authentic settlements in the Dolomites, where the atmosphere of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy can still be felt today.

The city is in a unique geographical position: it simultaneously serves as a passage to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo World Heritage site and as a gateway toward the Austrian border. San Candido’s special beauty is given by the surrounding mountains: from the north the Haunold, and from the south the famous Drei Zinnen (Tre Cime) peaks border it.

Its main attraction is the Collegiate Church from the 12th century, which is one of South Tyrol’s most significant Romanesque churches. The church’s specialty is the 13th-century fresco cycle depicting the life of Christ, which is one of Europe’s most intact medieval painting monuments.

The moderately difficult, 4-kilometer trail ascends 300 meters to the ridge. Along the path, the forest gradually changes, starting from drier, lower sections to the wet, humid forests of the higher regions. Maui Ocean Center

The aquarium complex features more than 60 exhibition spaces, showcasing more than 2,000 fish and marine species living in the waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands. The facility’s pride is the Açores marine habitat, a massive 2.8-million-liter tank where sharks, rays, and other large marine creatures swim. A unique characteristic of the aquarium is that it exclusively exhibits Hawaiian species.

The Akaka Falls plunges 135 meters down a cliff covered with lush, tropical vegetation. An easily walkable, paved half-kilometer path leads to the waterfall, winding through the rainforest. Along the way, visitors can also admire a smaller waterfall, the 30-meter Kahuna Falls.

The park is characterized by lush vegetation: giant ferns, orchids, bamboo groves, and exotic flowers make the environment even more enchanting. It is especially spectacular in the early morning.

Waipio Valley

One of Hawaii Island’s most sacred and breathtaking natural attractions is located on the northern shore of the Big Island.

The Waipio Valley, also known as the „Valley of Kings”, is about 1.6 kilometers wide and nearly 10 kilometers long, bordered on three sides by steep cliffs over 600 meters high. The valley was once home to thousands of native Hawaiians and served as an important center for spiritual and political life. Today, few people inhabit it, preserving its pristine beauty.

At the bottom of the valley, there are black sand beaches and crystal-clear rivers, while in the background, spectacular waterfalls cascade down vertical cliffs. The most famous among them is Hi’ilawe Falls, one of Hawaii’s highest waterfalls at over 400 meters. The road into the valley is extremely steep, so descending is recommended only by 4×4 vehicle or on foot, but the view from the lookout point is also breathtaking.

Pu’uhonua O Honaunau Historical Park

This sacred sanctuary is one of the most important monuments of Hawaiian culture and history, located on the western coast of the island.

Also known as the „Place of Refuge”, the area provided protection for centuries to those who broke the laws or were defeated in war. Priests performed ritual purification for those arriving at the sanctuary, after which they could leave as free people. The park features the Royal Grounds, where Hawaiian rulers lived, and the impressive Ki’i statues (tikis) nearly 3 meters tall that guard the sacred area.

The park’s unique atmosphere and historical significance make it a popular attraction. Visitors can gain insight into traditional Hawaiian lifestyle, view restored traditional huts, canoes, and the fish pond. Cultural demonstrations are frequently held at the site, where ancient craft techniques and traditions can be learned.

Nāhuku Lava Tube

One of the most unique formations in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, it is an underground volcanic lava tunnel.

The lava tube formed over more than 500 years when liquid lava flowed underground, gradually creating this cave system. The tunnel wall has a special pattern due to the flow traces of solidified lava and various mineral deposits. The lava stalactites hanging from the ceiling and the petrified memories of lava flows along the walls offer a spectacular sight.

Approximately 180 meters of the cave is visitable, with a pleasant temperature of 16-18 °C. At the entrance of the cave and its surroundings, ferns and native plants flourish, creating a curious contrast with the harsh, volcanic environment inside the cave.

Kīlauea Iki Trail

The hiking trail in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park crosses an extinct volcanic crater.

The former fire-breathing volcano last erupted in 1959, when hot molten rock shot up 580 meters high from its lava lake. Today, during the 6.4-kilometer circular trail, visitors can walk across the bottom of the crater, where the volcanic heat hidden deep in the earth can still be felt. The surface of the cracked lava plain still steams in places.

The path first runs along the rim of the crater, offering an unparalleled view of the caldera, then descends via a steep path to the crater floor.

ʻImiloa Astronomy Center

The science and cultural center in Hilo uniquely connects Hawaiian culture with modern astronomy.

The name of the institution means „discovery” or „seeking knowledge” which perfectly reflects its mission: to show how astronomy intertwines with the rich cultural heritage of native Hawaiians. The center’s modern planetarium holds impressive presentations about the Hawaiian sky and the Mauna Kea observatories, introducing the latest scientific discoveries in an interactive way.

In the exhibition space, visitors can learn about the Polynesian navigation methods that ancient Hawaiian sailors used to navigate the open ocean with the help of stars. They also present the cosmology of native Hawaiians and how they interpreted celestial phenomena.

James Cook Monument

The monument in Kealakekua Bay commemorates the place where the famous explorer, Captain James Cook, lost his life under tragic circumstances in 1779.

Captain Cook, who first mapped the Hawaiian Islands and named them the „Sandwich Islands” arrived at the shores of Hawaii during his third Pacific journey. Initially, the natives received him as a god, but later a conflict arose in which Captain Cook and several of his sailors were killed. The monument is a white obelisk standing on the shore of the bay and is considered both British and American territory.

The unique feature of the monument is that it can only be accessed by water, either by kayak or organized boat trips. In addition to its historical significance, the site has exceptional natural beauty, offering one of the most beautiful views along the Kona coast.

Hawaii Botanical Garden

Also known as the Garden of Eden, the botanical garden has one of the world’s most extraordinary collections of tropical plants.

The 17-hectare garden is situated on the slopes of the Kilauea volcano, above Onomea Bay, where the volcanic soil and abundant rainfall create ideal conditions for lush vegetation. The garden contains more than 2,000 different plant species, including rare palm varieties, orchids, bromeliads, and a rich collection of local native plants. A special feature of the garden is the world’s largest outdoor orchid collection.

Visitors can explore the garden via a network of walking paths that pass by waterfalls, streams, and viewpoints. One of the most spectacular parts is the Onomea Waterfall, whose rushing sound can be heard far into the dense vegetation.

Mauna Kea Cacao

This special cocoa plantation produces world-class chocolate ingredients thanks to Hawaii’s unique microclimate and volcanic soil.

The mineral-rich composition of the volcanic soil and the precipitation coming from the sea give a unique flavor to the cocoa beans grown here. The plantation managers are committed to sustainable farming and grow their plants using strictly organic methods.

Regular tours are organized for visitors, where they can learn about the entire process of cocoa growing and chocolate making, from plant care through fermentation to handmade chocolate production. The highlight of the tour is, of course, the tasting, where premium chocolates made with different aging and roasting techniques can be sampled. Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation

One of Hawaii’s most famous and highest coffee plantations is the home of the famous Kona coffee.

The plantation, located on the slopes of the Hualalai volcano at nearly 1,000 meters high, provides ideal conditions for producing exceptional quality coffee. The altitude, volcanic soil, morning sunshine, and afternoon cloud cover all contribute to the distinctive, rich flavor profile of Kona coffee.

Visitors can participate in free tours to learn about the entire coffee production process from bush to cup. At the end of the tour, they can, of course, taste freshly roasted coffee specialties.

Rainbow Falls

The waterfall near Hilo is one of the Big Island’s most beautiful attractions.

The waterfall on the Wailuku River got its name – Waianiwaniwa, which means rainbow in Hawaiian – because rainbows often appear in the spray of the falling water in the sunshine. The waterfall drops 24 meters into a natural pool carved by the river into the volcanic rock. The surrounding area is covered with lush rainforest, which is home to numerous native plant and animal species.

The path to the waterfall is of moderate difficulty and leads through wonderful landscapes. During the hike, we pass through bamboo groves, flowering gingers, and huge banana trees. Although the pool is tantalizingly inviting, swimming is not recommended due to the dangerous current and rocks hidden under the water.

Umauma Falls

This three-tiered waterfall is one of the Big Island’s most spectacular natural attractions.

The water of the Umauma River is carried down by three consecutive, stepped waterfalls over more than 90 meters. The combined view of the waterfalls is breathtaking, especially from the upper viewpoint, from which all three cascades can be admired at once. Natural pools have formed between the cascades, in which – following the park’s rules – swimming is allowed during certain periods.

The Umauma Experience park surrounding the waterfall offers numerous adventure opportunities for visitors. The braver ones can glide over the waterfall using the 9-line zipline system.

Kealakekua Bay

The bay is known not only for its historical significance but is also considered one of Hawaii’s best diving locations.

The crystal-clear water in the horseshoe-shaped bay often has visibility exceeding 30 meters, providing an exceptional opportunity to explore the underwater world. The coral reef not far from the bay’s shore is home to more than 200 fish species, including rare and endemic species. Divers and snorkelers can swim alongside colorful tropical fish, sea turtles, and occasionally even dolphins.

The site can be accessed by kayak, organized boat tours, or via a steep path leading down from the viewpoint above the bay to the shore.

Punaluʻu Beach

One of Hawaii’s most iconic and unique beaches is known for its black sand.

The beach owes its existence to volcanic activity: when hot lava flows into the sea, it fragments into tiny black sand particles due to sudden cooling.

One of its most special attractions is the presence of green sea turtles, known in Hawaiian as honu, which often rest on the black sand.

Hāpuna Beach

Papakōlea Beach

The unique green sand beach is among only four beaches in the world where such special colored sand can be found.

The beach gets its green color from the olivine mineral, which is a volcanic crystal. This mineral comes from the crater of the nearby Pu’u Mahana volcano, located at the southern tip of the island. The emerald green shade of the sand is particularly spectacular in sunshine when the crystalline material glitters vividly.

Accessing the beach is adventurous: a nearly five-kilometer hiking trail leads from the South Point parking lot to the seaside. This path can only be traveled on foot or by off-road vehicle, although off-road driving is not officially permitted. The beach forms a crescent-shaped bay surrounded by steep cliffs. Swimming is not recommended here due to strong currents and wave breaks.

‘Anaeho’omalu Beach

Known by locals simply as „A-Bay”, the beach lies in a beautiful bay on the Kohala coast, with a white sandy shoreline lined with palm trees and interspersed with black lava rock segments.

The beach’s specialty is the two ancient fish ponds along the shore, which are remnants of traditional Hawaiian fish farming. These ponds are connected to the sea through underground channels and once provided fresh fish for the ruling elite. Today, walking around the ponds, native water birds and sometimes sea turtles can be observed.

The water here is relatively calm, often ideal for paddleboarding and kayaking. The beach is also famous for its sunsets.

Kaunaoa Beach (Mauna Kea Beach)

This crescent-shaped, white sandy beach is one of the most exclusive and beautiful stretches of the Kohala coast.

The beach was originally designed for guests of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, and even today, a limited number of parking spaces are provided for the public. The gently sloping sandy beach and shallow, turquoise water provide perfect conditions for swimming and sunbathing.

Winter (December-February):

Waimea Canyon

Nā Pali Coast

This breathtaking 17-mile stretch of Kauai’s northern shore is one of the world’s most enchanting and steepest coastlines. It can only be accessed by foot, boat, or helicopter.

Its steep, emerald-green cliffs dramatically rise from the turquoise ocean, in places reaching heights of several hundred meters. The vertical cliff faces are interrupted by narrow valleys and hidden beaches. The unique geological formations of the coastline formed over millions of years through the combined effects of volcanic activity and erosion.

In the valleys along the coast, there were once ancient Hawaiian settlements, traces of which – terraced agricultural areas and sacred sites – can still be discovered today. The area has rich biodiversity: it’s home to rare plants, bird species, and marine life.

One of the most adventurous ways to explore the coastline is by boat or kayak tour, during which visitors can discover caves and waterfalls. Dolphins and turtles are often encountered.

Kalalau Trail

One of the world’s most beautiful and also most dangerous hiking routes runs along the Nā Pali Coast, offering breathtaking views.

The 11-mile trail was used by ancient Hawaiians to reach the Kalalau Valley and its isolated beaches. The hike starts at Ke’e Beach and ends at Kalalau Beach, passing through numerous smaller valleys, streams, and steep cliffs. During the journey, hikers pass through various microclimates: from humid rainforests to rocky hillsides to tropical shores.

The difficulty level of the hike is exceptional; in several sections, hikers must navigate narrow, slippery paths and steep cliff faces, with drops of several hundred meters below. The most dangerous part of the route is the section called „Crawler’s Ledge” where the footpath is only a few centimeters wide and runs along the side of the cliff. A permit is required for the full trail, and at least one night must be spent in the wilderness, but the first two miles – leading to Hanakapi’ai Beach – can be hiked without a permit.

Lihue

The island’s capital and commercial center is located on the eastern shore.

Lihue’s history is tied to the golden age of sugarcane cultivation when the city served as the economic engine of the island. Traces of this heritage can still be discovered at the Grove Farm Homestead Museum, a carefully restored plantation residence.

In the city center is the historic Kauai Museum, which showcases the island’s rich cultural heritage, from ancient Hawaiian civilization to the influences of Polynesian, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, and Portuguese immigrants. The museum’s special collection consists of old photographs, traditional crafts, and artistic creations.

Wailua Falls

One of the highest and most spectacular natural wonders of eastern Kauai plunges 173 feet into a deep, emerald-green pool.

Opaeka’a Falls

One of Kauai’s most easily accessible and yet most beautiful natural attractions, located along a tributary of the Wailua River.

The name of the waterfall in Hawaiian means „rolling shrimp”, referring to the shrimp that were once abundant in the pool below the waterfall. The nearly 150-foot high waterfall cascades down in two branches over a cliff covered with dense, green vegetation and has abundant water flow year-round. The landscape surrounding the waterfall is impressive: lush mountains, dense forests, and the valley of the Wailua River.

The specialty of the waterfall is that it can be viewed from a comfortable lookout point, easily accessible by car along Kuamoo Road (Highway 580). From the lookout point, there is not only an unparalleled view of the waterfall but also of the Wailua River valley and the distant mountains.

Koke’e State Park

A magical nature reserve in western Kauai, offering numerous hiking trails, breathtaking viewpoints, and a unique ecosystem.

The park, covering more than 10,000 acres, is located adjacent to Waimea Canyon and features diverse habitats: from wet mountain forests to drier plateaus. One of the park’s most special plants is the koa tree, native only to the Hawaiian Islands. Besides the native flora, many rare bird species can be observed here, such as the endangered akikiki or the puaiohi.

At the center of the park is the Koke’e Natural History Museum, which presents the area’s history, geology, and biodiversity through interactive exhibitions.

The park has more than 45 miles of hiking trails of varying difficulty levels: from easy walks to challenging, full-day hikes. The park’s most famous lookout points, Kalalau Lookout and Puu O Kila Lookout, offer magnificent panoramic views of the Nā Pali Coast.

Kalalau Lookout

One of Kauai’s most breathtaking viewpoints offers an incredible panorama from an elevation of 4,000 feet of the Kalalau Valley, the cliffs of the Nā Pali Coast, and the Pacific Ocean.

The lookout is located in Koke’e State Park and is relatively easily accessible by paved road. From the viewpoint, visitors can look into the Kalalau Valley, which was home to ancient Hawaiians and which today can only be accessed on foot or by boat. The steep walls of the valley are covered with dense forest, and when the clouds lift, the ocean undulating at the bottom of the valley provides a breathtaking sight.

Spouting Horn

One of the most spectacular natural wonders of Kauai’s southern coast is a special geyser-like phenomenon that has become one of the most photographed locations on the island.

The phenomenon occurs at a lava rock where waves are forced into an underground lava tube, and due to pressure, can shoot up to 50 feet high through a small opening. The water jet becomes particularly impressive during strong waves and is often accompanied by a characteristic hissing, whistling sound. According to Hawaiian legends, the whistling is the voice of Kaikapu, a mighty lizard that a young warrior, Liko, trapped in this lava tube.

The park developed around the Spouting Horn allows observation of the phenomenon from a safe distance. The area is especially popular at sunset.

Fern Grotto

One of Kauai’s most romantic and mystical locations is a cave-like recess covered with ferns along the Wailua River. It was once accessible only to the Hawaiian royal family.

The natural formation was created by thousands of years of erosion by the river, and its walls are densely covered with various ferns, mosses, and other tropical plants. The cave has special acoustics, which has made it a popular venue for weddings and musical performances for a long time.

The cave can only be reached by water, usually as part of an organized tour. On the boat trip upstream, participants learn about local history, flora and fauna, and Hawaiian culture.

Near the Fern Grotto is also Secret Falls (Uluwehi Falls). It’s accessible after a short kayak trip and hike, leading to a beautiful smaller waterfall and natural pool.

Allerton Garden

Located in southern Kauai, it’s known as one of the world’s most beautiful and unique tropical gardens.

The garden was developed in the 1930s by Robert Allerton and his adopted son, John Gregg Allerton, on a former royal estate. The 200-acre area was carefully designed into „garden rooms” separated by hedges, walls, and natural boundaries. The garden has numerous special spaces: there’s a bamboo forest, tropical fruit orchard, waterfront garden, and an impressive Moreton Bay fig tree avenue.

Perhaps the most famous parts of the garden are the giant fig trees, whose enormous aerial roots give the area an almost otherworldly atmosphere – it’s no coincidence that scenes from „Jurassic Park” were filmed here.

The garden is significant not only from a botanical perspective but also represents artistic value: antique statues, fountains, and carefully designed water features make the visit even more attractive. The garden can only be visited as part of a guided tour, during which visitors learn about the history of the garden, the origin and significance of the plants, and the challenges of design and maintenance.

Hanalei Bay

The crescent-shaped Hanalei Bay is one of the most iconic and picturesque locations on Kauai’s northern coast, characterized by lush, green mountains, crystal-clear water, and golden sand beaches.

The town of Hanalei, situated on the bay’s shore, is a charming, laid-back settlement that has preserved its authentic Hawaiian character. In the historical center of the town is the more than 100-year-old Wai’oli Hui’ia Church, whose distinctive green tower and colorful stained glass windows represent unique architectural value.

The bay’s beach is ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and surfing, especially during the summer months when the sea is calmer. The more adventurous can explore the mouth of the Hanalei River and the coastal mangrove swamps, which are home to rich birdlife, by kayak. The location has appeared in numerous films, including „South Pacific” and „The Perfect Storm”. One of the most beautiful views of the bay can be enjoyed from the Hanalei Lookout, located along Highway 56.

Poipu Beach

Often mentioned as one of Hawaii’s most beautiful and safest beaches, it provides an ideal location for families and water sports enthusiasts alike.

The beach actually encompasses two sandy bays separated by a narrow strip of land, Nukumoi Point. The eastern bay is quieter, has shallower water, and is ideal for families with small children, while the deeper water of the western section offers opportunities for more experienced swimmers and divers. The beach is protected by coral reefs, which reduce the force of the waves while offering excellent opportunities for snorkeling and observing colorful tropical fish.

One of the special features of Poipu Beach is that Hawaiian monk seals are often seen resting on the shore, as well as sea turtles grazing in the shallow water. Snorkeling along the coral reef adjacent to the beach, visitors can observe up to 35 different species of fish, including Hawaii’s state fish, the Humuhumunukunukuapua’a.

Ke’e Beach

The endpoint of Kauai’s northern shore, an idyllic sandy beach section. This is where the land meets the legendary Nā Pali Coast, and where the famous Kalalau Trail begins.

The crescent-shaped bay of the beach is protected from larger waves, making it ideal for swimming and snorkeling during the summer months when the sea is calmer. Underwater, there is an extensive coral reef that is home to colorful tropical fish, turtles, and other marine life.

The path runs along the stunning Nā Pali Coast, so hikers can enjoy breathtaking views along the way. During the hike, visitors also cross the Hanakapi’ai River, which can swell significantly during the rainy season, sometimes making crossing a challenge.

The special beauty of the beach comes from the surrounding steep, green cliffs and the massive waves arriving at the shore. It’s important to know that due to strong currents and dangerous waves, Hanakapi’ai Beach is not suitable for swimming – several fatal accidents have occurred here. Visiting the beach is more about experiencing the pristine beauty and power of nature.

The impressive Hanakapi’ai Falls is located 2 miles further from the beach. This is a 300-foot high cascade that pours into a crystal-clear pool.

Kauai weather: when is the best time to visit?

Kauai has a tropical climate that provides pleasant temperatures year-round, yet there are significant differences in rainfall between seasons and different areas of the island.

During the summer months, showers are also less frequent in the northern part of the island, making this the best time to explore the Nā Pali Coast and the Kalalau Trail.

Fall is one of the most pleasant seasons on Kauai, when temperatures are still summery (73-84°F), but there are fewer tourists. The weather generally remains dry during September and October, but the rainier season may begin in November. This period can be ideal for those who want to avoid crowds but still enjoy good weather. The ocean temperature also remains pleasant, so water sports can still be practiced.

Winter (December-February):

Winter in Kauai means the rainy season, especially in the northern and eastern parts of the island, where Mount Waialeale is one of the rainiest places on Earth. The average temperature ranges between 70-79°F, so it’s still pleasant, but frequent showers may limit outdoor activities. The sea’s waves are also stronger during this period, especially on the northern shore, which is good for surfers but can make beach activities more dangerous.

A special feature of the building is that bullet holes from the 1948 civil war are still visible on its outer walls. The museum provides a comprehensive picture of the country’s history from pre-Columbian times to the present day and has a rich archaeological and ethnographic collection.

Manuel Antonio National Park

One of Costa Rica’s smallest but most diverse national parks is located on the Pacific coast, south of the city of Quepos.

Although it covers only 1,680 hectares, it is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations thanks to its breathtaking beaches and rich wildlife. There are four beautiful beaches in the park: Espadilla Sur, Manuel Antonio, Escondido, and Playita. These are characterized by white sand, crystal clear turquoise water, and palm trees, along which numerous hiking trails lead.

The park’s most famous animals are the white-faced capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, and ten sloths, which often approach tourists. In addition, more than 100 mammal species and 184 bird species live here, including toucans, hummingbirds, and parrots.

Corcovado National Park

The park located on the Osa Peninsula is, according to National Geographic, „the most biologically intense place on Earth”.

The park was founded in 1975 and covers more than 41,000 hectares. It is home to extremely diverse ecosystems: tropical rainforests, swamps, mangrove forests, beaches, and coral reefs can be found here. This biological diversity is home to more than 500 tree species, 140 mammal species, 400 bird species, 116 reptile species, and 40 fish species. The most well-known representatives of the fauna include jaguars, pumas, tapirs, anteaters, toucans, and scarlet macaws.

Well-established hiking trails lead through the park, along which visitors can get a closer look at this magical ecosystem. The most popular route is the area around the Sirena Ranger Station, where rare animal species can be observed with the highest probability. However, visitors must be prepared for difficult terrain conditions and high humidity, which can be a serious challenge for less fit tourists.

Playa Conchal

One of Costa Rica’s most beautiful beaches is also located on the Nicoya Peninsula.

It gets its name from the tiny white and pinkish shell fragments that cover the shore instead of traditional sand. The sea is usually calm as the beach is located in a protected bay, making it perfect for swimming and relaxation.

It’s not far from the popular town of Tamarindo, from where the beach is easily accessible. Many consider Playa Conchal to be the most beautiful beach in the area.

Isla del Coco

Located about 550 kilometers off the coast of Costa Rica in the Pacific Ocean, the island has been a national park since 1978 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. It is an uninhabited island that can only be visited with permission, mainly for divers and scientists.

The island is famous for its special geological formations and rich marine ecosystem. It is of volcanic origin and was formed several million years ago. Its shores are lined with steep cliffs and waterfalls, while its interior is covered with dense tropical forest. In the waters around the island, there are more than 30 endemic fish species and marine creatures that are found nowhere else in the world.

It is particularly known for its huge shark populations, including hammerhead sharks, which gather in large groups in the waters around the island. The island inspired Michael Crichton’s famous novel, Jurassic Park, and according to many, also Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic, Treasure Island.

Arenal National Park

This national park in the northwestern part of the country is dominated by the imposing Arenal volcano, which was one of Costa Rica’s most active volcanoes after the 1968 eruption.

The 1,633-meter-high cone-shaped peak of the Arenal volcano is recognizable from a distance, although it has been in a dormant state since 2010. There are eight different ecological zones in the area that are home to more than 850 bird species, as well as jaguars, tapirs, and various monkey species. There are 14 kilometers of well-established hiking trails in the park, along which visitors can discover lava fields, waterfalls, and unique flora.

At the foot of the volcano is Lake Arenal, Costa Rica’s largest artificial lake, which was created in 1973 as part of a hydroelectric project. One of the park’s biggest attractions is the numerous thermal springs that were formed as a result of volcanic activity. These natural spas offer water of various temperatures, and many attribute healing effects to the water with high mineral content.

La Fortuna Waterfall

This impressive 70-meter-high waterfall is located at the foot of the Arenal volcano, about 5.5 kilometers south of the town of La Fortuna.

The Río Fortuna river originates from the side of the Chato volcano and plunges through the dense rainforest into a former volcanic crater. A path of 500 steps leads to the waterfall, which passes through the Reserva Ecológica Catarata Río Fortuna conservation area. Along the way, the impressive flora and fauna of the rainforest unfold, including colorful butterflies, birds, and occasionally monkeys can be observed. The descent takes about 15-20 minutes.

At the bottom of the waterfall, a crystal clear, emerald green pool welcomes visitors, providing an excellent opportunity for refreshment. The water temperature is pleasant, although swimming is only recommended at the edge of the pool due to the strong current. The waterfall is particularly spectacular during the rainy season when the water flow increases significantly.

Guayabo National Monument

Costa Rica’s most important archaeological site is located about 19 kilometers from the city of Turrialba.

The area preserves the remains of a pre-Columbian settlement that was inhabited from approximately 1000 BCE to 1400 CE. The 232-hectare archaeological park is the only national monument in the country that showcases the culture of ancient civilizations.

In the excavated area, stone streets, water supply system, circular and rectangular based buildings, tombs, and the remains of a central acropolis can be seen. Particularly noteworthy are the petroglyph depictions carved from stone and the drainage system, which is still functional today, proving the advancement of ancient engineering knowledge.

The cultural significance of the city of Guayabo is invaluable. It demonstrably proves that complex societies existed in the territory of Costa Rica even before the arrival of Europeans. Based on archaeological findings, the settlement may have been an important commercial and religious center.

Río Celeste

The river located in the Tenorio volcano area means „Heavenly Blue River” in Spanish. It was named after its intense turquoise blue color, which provides a unique sight in the green environment of the dense rainforest.

Its special color is caused by the meeting of two transparent rivers. When the Quebrada Agria and the Río Buenavista converge, an optical illusion is created: volcanic sulfur and calcium carbonate particles scatter in the sunlight in such a way that the water shines in an intense blue color. According to the scientific explanation, the water itself is not blue, but the scattering of light on the mineral substances floating in the water creates this magical phenomenon.

A 3.5-kilometer hiking trail leads to the river through the Tenorio Volcano National Park, during which visitors can discover not only the blue river but also several natural attractions.

„Los Teñideros” is the meeting point of the two rivers, where we can observe the formation of the color. In addition, during the tour, we can see thermal springs, an impressive 30-meter-high waterfall, and a small lake called „Laguna Azul”, where the water shines in a particularly intense blue color.

Irazú National Park

This popular national park is located just two hours east of the capital, San José. Its central element is the Irazú volcano, Costa Rica’s highest active volcano, which rises 3,432 meters above sea level.

The name of the volcano comes from the language of the indigenous Indians, meaning „mountain of fury and thunder”. Its last significant eruption occurred between 1963-1965, beginning on the day of John F. Kennedy’s visit to Costa Rica. The most special feature of the park is the crater at the top of the volcano, which has a diameter of 1,050 meters and a depth of 300 meters. At the bottom of the crater, there is an acidic, emerald green lake, the color of which often changes depending on volcanic activity and weather, sometimes taking on reddish or grayish hues.

On clear days, however, there is an unparalleled view from the summit: both the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean coastlines can be seen simultaneously. In the area called „Playa Hermosa”, we can admire the moonlike landscape formed by volcanic ash and lava, where special rock formations and volcanic formations can be found.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve

One of Costa Rica’s most spectacular natural attractions is located in the Tilarán Mountains, at an altitude of approximately 1,400 meters. Thanks to its special microclimate, it is characterized by a mystical cloud forest that is constantly shrouded in mist.

The reserve is home to more than 400 bird species, including the rare quetzal. The quetzal, with its vibrant green and red plumage, is one of the most beautiful birds in the world. The humid rainforest, full of huge trees, moss cushions, and hanging lianas, offers adventurous hikes.

It is famous for its jungle walks with suspension bridges and adventure parks, where you can admire the canopy of the trees up close. Due to the mystical cloud forest, rich wildlife, and exciting adventure programs, it is a must-see attraction!

Cahuita

This charming settlement is located on the Caribbean coast, in the province of Limón. The Afro-Caribbean cultural influence is strongly felt in the settlement, making it unique compared to other parts of Costa Rica.

The main attraction of Cahuita is the national park, which encompasses 1,100 hectares of terrestrial and 22,400 hectares of marine ecosystem. One of the most spectacular elements of the park is the 600-meter-wide coral reef, which is Costa Rica’s most developed coral reef. The reef is home to more than 35 types of coral and is an ideal place for snorkeling and diving. In the crystal clear water, colorful tropical fish, sea urchins, crabs, and occasionally sea turtles can be observed.

On the land areas, easily accessible paths lead between the white sandy beaches and the lush rainforest. The park has rich wildlife: white-faced capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, sloths, raccoons, and numerous bird species live here.

The settlement of Cahuita itself also exudes an attractive Caribbean atmosphere: colorful wooden houses, reggae music, and authentic Caribbean dishes prepared by the locals – such as rice and beans cooked in coconut milk or fish dishes wrapped in palm leaves – await visitors.

Poás National Park

The main attraction of this popular national park is the Poás volcano, one of the largest and most active volcanoes in Costa Rica.

The volcano rises 2,708 meters above sea level, and its main crater boasts impressive dimensions: nearly 1.5 kilometers wide and 300 meters deep. At the bottom of the crater, there is an acidic lake, which is one of the most acidic natural water lakes in the world, with a pH value close to zero. The color of the lake changes depending on volcanic activity, from emerald green to opaline turquoise. Next to the main crater is the already extinct Botos crater, in which a cold, clear water lake has formed, surrounded by lush rainforest.

Visitors are now allowed to stay at the crater viewpoint for only a limited time (approximately 20 minutes), and protective helmets are also provided for them. Several paths lead through the park area, showcasing different ecosystems, including dwarf forest and high mountain rainforest.

Punta Uva

One of the most picturesque sections of Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast is located southeast of the settlement of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. The name of the area means „Grape Point” in Spanish, referring to the grape trees found on the coast.

Punta Uva consists of two main parts: Punta Uva Playa and Playa Arrecife. Both sections are breathtakingly beautiful, with white sandy beaches, turquoise water, and palm trees lining the coastline. The beaches are mostly calm and quiet. The coral reefs along the shores provide an excellent opportunity for snorkeling and diving, where colorful tropical fish, rays, and coral formations can be observed.

The land areas are characterized by rich biodiversity. Walking along the coastal paths, we often encounter sloths, howler and white-faced monkeys, iguanas, and numerous bird species. One of the favorite activities in the area is kayaking in the coastal mangrove swamps or in open water.

It is also an interesting cultural site: nearby is the reservation of the indigenous BriBri Indians, where we can learn about their traditional lifestyle, knowledge of medicinal herbs, and cocoa cultivation practices. There are numerous organic cocoa farms operating in the area, where demonstrations and tastings are organized for visitors.

Nauyaca Waterfalls

This stunning natural wonder is located about 15 kilometers from the coastal town of Dominical, in the southern Pacific region.

The waterfalls are located on the Barú River and consist of two imposing cascades with a total height of about 80 meters. The lower waterfall is 20 meters high and 60 meters wide, with a natural pool of approximately 1,000 square meters underneath, which is ideal for swimming. The upper waterfall is even more impressive, 45 meters high and continuously pouring down the rock face. Between the two waterfalls, there are additional smaller pools where you can also bathe.

The area is privately owned, owned and managed by the local Don Lulo family, who organize horseback rides to the waterfall, combined with a traditional Costa Rican breakfast. There are three ways to reach the waterfalls: on foot via a 4-kilometer hiking trail, by off-road vehicle, or with the mentioned horseback tour.

Orosí Valley

This picturesque valley is located in the province of Cartago, about 35 kilometers southeast of the capital, San José.

It is crossed by the Orosí River and surrounded by steep mountains on all sides. The valley is situated at 1,000-1,400 meters above sea level and has a pleasant, spring-like climate all year round.

The Orosí Valley is primarily famous for its coffee cultivation: the green carpet of coffee plantations covering the slopes offers a breathtaking sight. The coffee grown in the region is among the best in the world, thanks to the volcanic soil, appropriate altitude above sea level, and favorable climate. Many coffee plantations welcome visitors, where they demonstrate the coffee-making process from cultivation to roasting.

One of the valley’s outstanding attractions is the Lankester Botanical Garden, which is home to more than 3,000 plant species, including 800 orchid species. Also noteworthy is the Orosí Church (Iglesia de San José de Orosí), which is one of Costa Rica’s oldest colonial churches still in use, built in 1743. Next to the church is the Museum of Religious Arts, which showcases religious artifacts from the Spanish colonial period.

The Tapantí National Park is also located in the valley, which boasts rich biodiversity and welcomes nature lovers with numerous hiking trails. The park’s specialty is that it is one of the country’s most rainy areas, which nourishes its extremely lush vegetation and numerous waterfalls.

Playa Flamingo

One of Costa Rica’s most beautiful beaches is located in the Guanacaste region, on the Pacific Ocean coast.

The approximately 1.5-kilometer-long white sandy beach with its crystal clear turquoise water and palm-lined shore is one of the tourists’ favorite destinations. The beach was not named after flamingo birds but after the special pinkish shade of the sand, which takes on an even more intense color at sunset.

The shallow, calm water is ideal for swimming, and the nearshore coral reefs provide an excellent opportunity for diving and snorkeling. The area around Playa Flamingo has a developed tourism infrastructure.

The nearby Marino Las Baulas National Park is famous as a nesting site for giant turtles, so during the appropriate season, there is an opportunity to observe these impressive animals.

Through interactive exhibitions and full-scale reconstructions, visitors can get a glimpse into the golden age of airship travel.

The city center is modern but also contains historical elements. One such example is the Schlosskirche, a 17th-century baroque church that is one of Friedrichshafen’s symbols. At the pier, there is an observation tower offering a beautiful panorama of the lake.

Meersburg

The city’s special atmosphere comes from the unique combination of historical buildings, vineyards, and cultural attractions.

Its most famous landmark is Meersburg Castle (Alte Burg), which is Germany’s oldest inhabited castle. Founded in the 7th century, this fortress has been preserved in impressive condition and provides insight into everyday medieval life. The castle offers a magnificent view of Lake Constance and the Alps.

In the downtown area, there are narrow cobblestone streets and colorful half-timbered houses. It is also an important cultural site, home to the Droste-Hülshoff Museum, which presents the former home of the famous German writer, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff.

The central settlement of the northwestern arm of Lake Constance is famous for its historical heritage, picturesque lakefront, and charming old town.

Its historical center boasts numerous medieval and Renaissance buildings that have preserved their original form well. One of the most important sights is the Sankt Nikolaus Church, built in the Gothic style in the 1300s. Next to the church is the city’s main square, where the famous Rathaus, or city hall, is located, built in 16th-century Renaissance style.

It is also famous for its flower gardens, especially the beautiful green areas of Bodensee Park and Überlingen’s lakeside garden.

Mainau

This small island is the most beautiful part of Lake Constance, which we can also call the Island of Flowers.

The island is owned by the Swedish Bernadotte family, who landscaped and transformed Mainau into a botanical specialty in the 20th century. Its central building is Mainau Castle, dating from the 18th century and still owned by the Bernadotte family. The castle is baroque in style, with an elegant garden and a picturesque chapel.

Its greatest attraction is the wonderful botanical garden, which shows a different face throughout the year. In spring, thousands of tulips cover the park, in summer roses and tropical plants bloom, while in autumn the dahlia festival creates colorful flower fields.

The tropical section is presented in the palm house, where banana trees, orchids, and other exotic plants can be found. One of the most popular attractions is the butterfly house, one of the largest such facilities in Europe, where hundreds of colorful butterflies can be seen in their natural environment.

Konstanz

The largest and one of the most important cities on Lake Constance is located in southwestern Germany, directly on the Swiss border.

Its historical center has preserved its medieval character well, as it did not suffer significant destruction during World War II. The Konstanz Cathedral (Münster Unserer Lieben Frau) was an important ecclesiastical center for centuries and today still welcomes visitors with impressive interiors and an observation tower.

What might make its name familiar is the Council of Constance held between 1414 and 1418, which had a significant impact on European religious and political life. In memory of this, the iconic Imperia statue stands in the harbor, a huge rotating female figure alluding to the corrupt papacy and power games of the time.

Arbon

The Swiss small town’s history goes back more than 2000 years, as it was known as Arbor Felix in Roman times.

One of the city’s most important attractions is Schloss Arbon, an imposing medieval castle that now functions as a museum, showcasing the region’s history from Roman times to the present day. The Sankt Martin Church in the city is also noteworthy, as its tower offers a magnificent panorama of the lake and the surrounding countryside.

It is also an important city from an industrial perspective, as it was the founding location of the famous Saurer vehicle factory, which once manufactured trucks and buses. There are plenty of opportunities for younger visitors as well, such as the Dino Attack interactive experience, which is an exciting dinosaur-themed adventure.

The park’s specialty is that it offers not only amusement park experiences but also animal shows. The most famous of these is the seal and dolphin show. The parrot show is also very popular, where the birds demonstrate impressive tricks.
