Trieste is a port city in Northern Italy, situated between the Adriatic Sea and Slovenia. For several centuries, it was part of the Habsburg Empire, and until 1918, it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, serving as the empire’s most important shipping and naval port. At the beginning of the 20th century, the city was the fourth-largest in the Empire (after Vienna, Budapest, and Prague).

Piazza Unità d’Italia

This large square facing the sea is one of Europe’s largest seafront main squares.

Its original name was Piazza Grande, but after the 1918 Italian unification, it was renamed Piazza Unità d’Italia, or „Square of Italian Unity” expressing Trieste’s new role as part of the Italian state.

The square is bordered by impressive historical buildings on three sides, while the fourth side opens to the sea. Its central building is the City Hall (Palazzo del Municipio), designed by Giuseppe Bruni and featuring a clock tower on its facade. The Palazzo Stratti houses the famous Caffè degli Specchi, one of Trieste’s most renowned and oldest cafes.

One of the square’s ornaments is the Fontana dei Quattro Continenti, an 18th-century fountain symbolizing the four known continents at the time (Europe, Asia, Africa, and America).

Canal Grande

The artificial canal is one of Trieste’s most romantic and popular attractions.

It was created in the mid-18th century when Trieste was part of the Habsburg Empire. The canal was intended as the city center’s inner harbor, where ships could arrive directly at the quays and easily unload their goods.

The canal banks are lined with elegant palaces and famous buildings reflecting the classical and baroque styles of the 18th and 19th centuries. Several bridges span the canal. The most famous is the Ponte Rosso (Red Bridge), offering beautiful views of the canal and the Sant’Antonio Taumaturgo church rising in the background. Next to the bridge stands a statue of James Joyce, commemorating the Irish writer’s connection to Trieste.

Piazza della Borsa

Located next to Piazza Unità d’Italia, this square was Trieste’s main square until the 19th century and remains one of the city’s most vibrant centers today.

It takes its name from the Borsa Vecchia (Old Stock Exchange) building, which was once home to the Trieste stock exchange and remains one of the square’s main attractions. Its facade is adorned with six monumental columns, topped by three statues referring to the city’s commercial significance.

In the center of the square stands an imposing Neptune statue, symbolizing the connection between the sea and the city.

Trieste Cathedral (Cattedrale di San Giusto Martire)

The city’s most important religious building rises on San Giusto hill, offering breathtaking views of Trieste and the Adriatic Sea.

The cathedral uniquely emerged from the merger of two earlier churches in the 14th century. The building is Romanesque-Gothic in style, with thick stone walls and a simple, robust structure. The facade is decorated with a large rose window, created by Venetian masters in the 14th century. The cathedral’s bell tower was partly built from the remains of an ancient Roman building and remains one of the city’s symbols today.

The cathedral is dedicated to the city’s patron saint, Saint Justus (San Giusto) the martyr. The church houses San Giusto’s reliquary, which contains the patron saint’s remains.

San Giusto Castle (Castello di San Giusto)

This massive fortress, which played a key role in Trieste’s defense, is located on San Giusto hill overlooking the city.

Construction of the fortress was begun by the Habsburgs in the 15th century when Trieste came under Austrian Empire rule. The fortress was intended to strengthen the city’s defenses, particularly against attacks from the Venetian Republic and other rival powers. Construction took place in several phases and reached its final form in the 17th century.

It has an irregular pentagonal shape with thick stone walls and strong bastions that withstood enemy attacks for centuries. Above the main entrance is a relief of the Habsburg double-headed eagle.

Today it functions as a museum and offers unparalleled panoramic views of the city and the Adriatic Sea.

Roman Theater (Teatro Romano di Trieste)

One of Trieste’s most significant ancient monuments is located at the foot of San Giusto hill.

Built in the early 1st century AD during Emperor Trajan’s reign, when Trieste (then known as Tergeste) was an important port city of the Roman Empire. The theater could accommodate several thousand spectators. Behind the stage once stood an ornate columned facade, which unfortunately has not been fully preserved.

Although not completely reconstructed, the stone seats and foundation walls clearly show the original structure. The theater is an open area, visible from the street, and occasionally serves as a venue for cultural events, concerts, and theatrical performances.

Forum (Foro Romano)

It was the city’s former center from political, religious, and commercial perspectives.

Established in the 1st century BC, the forum hosted city council meetings, official celebrations, commercial activities, and public debates. Numerous Roman temples, basilicas, and administrative buildings stood here. Some sources indicate there was also a Temple of Jupiter, built to honor the Roman gods.

Although much of the forum was destroyed or incorporated into the medieval and modern city structure over the centuries, marble columns and column bases, carved stones, and stone fragments are still visible today.

War Memorial (Monumento ai Caduti di Trieste)

This imposing monument commemorates Trieste’s victims of World War I.

During World War I, Trieste was a key strategic city that belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy until 1918, when it was annexed to Italy following the arrival of Italian troops. The monument recalls the tragic events of this period and Trieste’s war victims.

The monument, consisting of bronze and stone sculptures, was created by Attilio Selva, a renowned Italian sculptor. At its center stands a powerful human figure symbolizing struggle, sacrifice, and heroism.

Kleine Berlin

This underground bunker and tunnel system was built during World War II and can be visited through guided tours.

The bunker network was built by the German army (Wehrmacht) after they occupied Trieste in 1943 following Italy’s capitulation. The name refers to how the city functioned as a „little Berlin” under German occupation, where the Nazi army established its own defense and logistics centers.

The tunnel system is divided into two main parts: a civil bunker built for the population, and the military section that served as a command center and shelter for the German army. The underground complex consists of extensive corridors, halls, and protected rooms where original furnishings, wall writings, and war memorabilia can still be seen.

Revoltella Museum

One of Trieste’s most significant art museums, famous for its modern and contemporary art collections.

The museum was founded in the 19th century by Pasquale Revoltella, a wealthy Trieste merchant and art collector. After his death, he bequeathed his luxurious palace and rich art collection to the city. The institution originally showcased his private collection and residence but has significantly expanded over the years.

The museum consists of three buildings. Palazzo Revoltella is the original 19th-century palace that served as the home of the museum’s founder, Revoltella. Palazzo Brunner houses the museum’s modern and contemporary art collection. Palazzo Basevi functions as an exhibition space and research center.

The museum primarily focuses on 19th and 20th-century art but also presents contemporary works. The collection includes works by Italian and international artists, particularly from the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and Italy. Among the most important works are paintings by Giovanni Fattori, Giuseppe Tominz, and Franz von Lenbach.

Sartorio Museum (Civico Museo Sartorio)

One of Trieste’s less known but valuable art and historical museums.

The museum was created by Antonio Sartorio, a wealthy local industrialist, art collector, and patron who supported the city’s culture. The building is an imposing 19th-century palace that combines Italian and Austrian architectural traditions. Its interior spaces reflect the style of the contemporary aristocracy.

The collection features paintings and sculptures by Italian and international artists, with particular attention to 18th and 19th-century artistic movements. Works by artists from Trieste or connected to the city are particularly prominent. The antique furniture and decorative elements showcase the development of local industry and the life of local aristocracy.

Oriental Art Museum (Civico Museo d’Arte Orientale)

One of Trieste’s most interesting cultural institutions provides insight into the world of oriental arts.

Ferdinando Borsari, an art collector who donated the collection to the city, played a major role in founding the museum. One of its most important characteristics is its extensive collection of Asian art from various countries and cultures.

Chinese painting, calligraphy, porcelain, bronze sculptures, as well as the terracotta army and other Chinese sculpture memorials have a prominent place. Japanese culture is also a significant part of the collection, featuring various ukiyo-e (woodblock prints), kimonos, samurai armor, as well as Japanese sculptures and ceremonial objects. Additionally, Islamic world art and artistic treasures from other Asian countries such as Tibet and Nepal are also featured.

Pula, with more than three thousand years of traditions, is the largest city in Istria. The first settlement was founded by the Illyrians. Over time, it was part of the Roman Empire, the Venetian Republic, the Habsburg Empire, and Italy.

Attractions in Pula

Amphitheater

Perhaps the most famous attraction in Istria, it is among the five largest Roman amphitheaters.

The elliptical structure, which could accommodate 23,000 spectators, has a longer axis of 132 meters and a shorter axis of 105 meters. As it was partly built on a hillside, the land-facing side is two-storied, while the sea-facing side has three levels, with the entrance on this latter side. The arena is also elliptical, measuring 68×42 meters.

The building is now relatively far from the sea, as part of the bay was filled in over the centuries. In Roman times, it stood right by the shore, and humans and animals killed during the games were disposed of in the sea through a short channel.

Today, the amphitheater hosts concerts, opera performances, festivals, and sporting events.

Arch of Sergii

The triumphal arch is one of the most important monuments of Roman classical art. It was built by Salvius Postumus from the Sergii family in honor of three members of his family.

It’s a simple arched gate with an attic, where statues of the Sergii once stood. Today, only the inscriptions remain. The central arched opening is richly profiled and mostly decorated with plant motifs. At the top of the arch is a relief of an eagle fighting a snake. The straight line of the arch and the wreath is closed by two triangular surfaces, in which Victory – Victoria symbols are symmetrically depicted. The frieze bears the inscription „Salvia Postuma”.

Temple of Augustus

Located on the western part of the old town, on the forum of the former Roman city, this temple is dedicated to the gods of Rome and Emperor Augustus.

It’s one of the most beautiful examples of Roman cult architecture, with a strong influence of late Hellenistic art visible in the decoration of the friezes and column capitals.

The building is 16 meters wide, 8 meters high, with a square floor plan. It stands on a high pedestal with a deep porch, and four columns on the facade support the pediment.

Porta Gemina

The double gate is one of the gates that remained after the demolition of the city wall in the 19th century. This 2nd-century structure is the oldest gate in Pula.

Gate of Hercules

Located about 100 meters from the double gate, it’s the oldest Roman monument in the city, dating from the 1st century BC.

The keystone depicts the head of Hercules, who was the patron god of ancient Pola. It bears the names of Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus and Caius Cassius Longinus, who were commissioned by the Roman Senate to establish the colony of Pola. The founding of Pola is dated to the period between 47-44 BC.

Kaštel Fortress

Located in the historical center of Pula, on top of the central hill, 34 meters high.

The Baroque fortress was built on the ruins of a medieval castle, which in turn was built on the remains of a Bronze Age settlement, as well as Histri and Roman layers. The fortification, built between 1630-1633, was necessitated by the need for protection against increasingly destructive artillery fire. The fortress was designed and supervised by French military engineer Antoine De Ville. The fortress was originally completed as a square Tuscan-style stronghold, with shorter sides and four strong bastions at the corners, capable of accommodating 24 cannons.

The fortress was rebuilt and expanded in the 17th and 18th centuries, with the original southern entrance relocated to the western side in 1703. Further renovations took place in the second half of the 19th century under Austrian rule. Later, it increasingly lost its defensive significance.

Today, it houses the Historical and Maritime Museum of Istria (Museo storico e navale dell’Istria).

Zerostrasse

Pula’s underground tunnel, built during World War II as a shelter from air raids. It’s now one of the most visited places in the city.

It’s an extensive tunnel system under the city, with nearly 200 passages of varying lengths discovered so far. About 400 meters of this is open to visitors. The temperature remains between 14-18 degrees Celsius year-round.

Chapel of St. Mary Formosa

This Byzantine early Christian basilica was built in the 6th century as part of a Benedictine abbey. Its construction was supported by Archbishop Maximian of Ravenna.

The three-nave basilica had two chapels, of which the southern one remains to this day. The wall paintings were reconstructed in the 15th century based on earlier early Christian images. When the Venetians conquered the city in 1605, many valuable items were taken to St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice.

Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The church was built in the 6th century when the city became an episcopal see. Early Christians prayed at this site in Roman times.

It was expanded in the 10th century and renovated in the 15th century. It gained its current form in the 16th century when a Renaissance facade was added.

The church still contains Romanesque and Byzantine elements, and the upper windows in the nave were also built at this time. Mosaics from the 5th and 6th centuries can still be seen in the altar area. The windows were rebuilt in Gothic style in 1242. The bell tower in front of the church was built between 1671 and 1707 using stones from the amphitheater.

Church and Monastery of St. Francis

Built in the second half of the 13th century, it was rebuilt in Romanesque style in 1314.

On the front wall of the sanctuary, there are remains of Gothic frescoes depicting saints. The rectangular monastery was built simultaneously with the adjacent church.

The sacristy and chapter house are located in the northeast wing, from which a monumental Gothic portal and double bifora open towards the cloister and the monks’ cells, while the refectory, kitchen, and utility rooms were in the northwest wing. In the center is the courtyard with a well.

The monastery was rebuilt several times between the 14th and 17th centuries, and it gained its current form at the beginning of the 18th century.

Fort Punta Christo and Suspension Bridge

Located northwest of the city, near the settlement of Stinjan, this fortification was built during the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy era.

The circular fort has been well preserved, and festivals are sometimes held here. Unfortunately, the area is not open to the public.

There’s a small bay on the shore with a suspension bridge spanning over it. If you’re brave, cross it!

Aquarium Pula

Located 4 km south of the city center in the Verudela Fort built in 1886, this is Pula’s aquarium.

Brijuni National Park

Located west of Pula, the Brijuni National Park consists of a group of 14 islands known as the Brioni (Brijuni) archipelago.

They take the protection of the archipelago seriously: you need to buy a ticket, and tourists are taken around by electric train.

It was populated as early as Roman times. Remnants from this period can still be seen today: besides the ruins of Roman villas, the remains of a Venus sanctuary can also be viewed. Architectural relics from the Middle Ages include a Byzantine fortification and a sixth-century basilica.

After World War II, the leader of Yugoslavia, Tito, established his private residence here. For decades, it couldn’t be visited. Three years after Tito’s death, in 1983, the islands were declared a national park and reopened to the public in 1985.

Beaches and coasts near Pula

There are many smaller and larger coastal areas around the city, of which three beaches stand out.

Plaža Ambrela

This is perhaps the best of the beaches around the city. It’s located 300 meters from the Aquarium Pula.

It’s a small beach surrounded by forest, with white pebbles and shallow water, offering pedal boat rentals and several restaurants nearby.

Fažana

Located about 8 km north of Pula, this town’s beach is very popular.

It has a white pebble shore, and the water deepens slowly, making it ideal for children as well.

Bijeca

The bay of Medulin settlement, southeast of Pula, is the most famous beach.

It’s about 1 km long and is Istria’s only sandy beach. This also makes it extremely popular and often crowded during high season.

You can walk far into the water, there are island-like shoals, and there’s also a water playground.

Split is the second-largest city in Croatia, located in Split-Dalmatia County, and is the largest city in Dalmatia.

Attractions in Split

Diocletian’s Palace

The old town is essentially the palace itself. This ancient palace was built around 300 AD by Roman Emperor Diocletian. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979.

The emperor retired from politics in 305 AD and stayed in the palace until his death in 311 AD.

The imperial palace is 200 meters long, 170 meters wide, with walls 15-20 meters high. It consists of charming narrow streets, squares, and amazing buildings. Almost every small street has restaurants and cafes.

Its most famous gate is the impressive Golden Gate (Zlatna vrata), which is the northern entrance to the palace.

Riva

The famous Split promenade stretches between the palace and the harbor.

The street is full of shops, restaurants, bars, and beautiful palm trees. It’s worth visiting in the evening to enjoy the buzz and atmosphere.

Cathedral of Saint Domnius

The cathedral is named after Split’s patron saint, Saint Domnius, who was martyred under Diocletian. Built in 305 AD, the cathedral has a Romanesque bell tower.

The church has a Hungarian connection: above the main gate, there are two stone coffins containing the earthly remains of Catharine and Margaret, daughters of Hungarian King Béla IV.

It’s worth climbing the bell tower for a good view of Split’s old town.

Temple of Jupiter

Opposite the cathedral entrance, a narrow alley leads to Split’s best-preserved Roman-era monument.

It has been a baptistery since the 7th century, with its most beautiful part being the baptismal font decorated with Old Croatian reliefs.

Prokurative

This Republic Square stands at the western end of the Riva promenade, with beautiful red buildings.

The 19th-century neo-Renaissance style buildings evoke Venetian times. The square somewhat resembles St. Mark’s Square.

Gripe Fortress

A modern fortress complex located east of the city center on Gripe Hill.

The Venetians built the fortress here in the 17th century to defend against Turkish attacks.

Today, the Gripe Fortress houses the Croatian Maritime Museum, the Croatian State Archives, and hosts concerts.

Archaeological Museum

The museum displays Greek sculptures, Greek, Roman, and Illyrian jewelry, everyday objects, and rich findings from the Salona excavations.

It also has a rich lapidarium. Several famous sarcophagi can be found, including the Hippolytus and Phaedra sarcophagus.

Froggyland

A somewhat „interesting” exhibition created by a Hungarian taxidermist.

You can see stuffed frogs in various human life situations. There’s nothing disgusting about it; it can be described as rather funny.

Meštrović Gallery

Ivan Meštrović is Croatia’s and former Yugoslavia’s greatest, world-renowned sculptor, creator of numerous Yugoslav, Croatian, and Serbian-themed, as well as Christian-inspired sculptures.

His works are exhibited in his former home, workshop, and garden. Those who love art should visit this place.

Marjan Hill

A peninsula and forest park west of Split’s city center. Its coast is quite indented and varied, with numerous bays, rocks, and reefs.

The hill itself is 178 meters high, with its highest peak called Telegrin. This is the best viewpoint, offering a beautiful panorama of the city and the sea.

Beaches in Split

Bačvice

Split’s most popular beach, close to the city center. Often crowded during high season.

The shore is gently sloping and sandy, making it perfect for children.

Firule

This popular beach is found not far east of Bačvice.

The sandy-pebble beach is in a bay, surrounded by many bars and restaurants.

Žnjan

This long stretch of coastline, consisting of several parts, is on the outskirts of Split.

It’s a well-developed fine pebble beach, deepening quickly in most places. There are several bars and restaurants on the shore.

Ježinac

This charming beach is found on the southern part of Marjan Hill, west of the city center.

The shore is pebbly and quickly deepening. However, due to the hill above it, this beach has a wonderful location.

Attractions near Split

Trogir

Located 30 km west of Split. The city center is part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage under the name „Historic City of Trogir.” The city is situated on a tiny island between the island of Čiovo and the mainland.

The city appeared in the Game of Thrones TV series as the city of Qarth.

Its old town is one of the most beautiful Croatian city centers. Main attractions include the Kamerlengo Citadel and St. Mark’s Tower.

The Cathedral of St. Lawrence stands in the city’s main square. This Romanesque-Gothic style church, built between the 13th and 15th centuries, has a main portal that is the most valuable architectural sculpture in Dalmatia.

There are many picturesque bays around Trogir, especially the Seget and Saldun bays are very beautiful.

Omiš

Located 25 km southeast of Split at the Adriatic mouth of the Cetina River.

It’s best known for its sandy beaches, formed by the sediment of the Cetina River.

Velika, at the river mouth, is one of the most beautiful beaches in the area. The huge gray rock mass rising behind the city provides a wonderful experience for those relaxing on the fine sandy beach.

The Cetina River reaches the Adriatic through a narrow canyon, making it excellent for whitewater rafting trips.

For those seeking even more adrenaline, you can try zip-lining over the river.

Brač

This island near Split is the third largest in the Adriatic Sea and, with its 778-meter-high Vidova Gora, the highest island.

The southern side of the island is steep, with many rocky cliffs meeting the sea. The northern side, however, gently rises towards the interior of the island.

From Split, you arrive by boat to the town of Supetar, which is the center of the island. It’s a popular holiday resort, from where roads lead to attractions and beaches.

Here you can find one of the most beautiful beaches of the Croatian Adriatic, Zlatni Rat. This pebble beach, known as the „golden horn” extends into the sea in a triangle shape, offering a spectacular sight.

Brac attractions, beaches

Makarska is located 90 km southeast of Split, in the center of the riviera named after it. The northeastern parts of the city extend up to the slopes of the Biokovo mountain range.

Unlike popular Croatian cities (Dubrovnik, Rovinj, etc.), the city does not have an old town, as the Venetians destroyed it after expelling the Turks. Makarska’s current appearance began to take shape from the 18th century.

Makarska attractions, beaches

St. Mark’s Cathedral

Located on the northern side of the city’s central square named after Andrija Kačić Miošić, a Franciscan monk and poet, whose bronze statue stands in the square.

It’s not a large church, but due to the staircase and the huge rock mass rising in the background, it’s a very beautiful sight in Makarska.

St. Peter’s Peninsula

We can take a pleasant walk on the peninsula next to the harbor, from where there’s a great view of the city and the mountains.

We can walk around the peninsula on the promenade. At one point, there’s a padlock collection where we can place a padlock with our partner’s name on the chain fence.

On the eastern side stands the statue of St. Peter, holding the key to Heaven in his hand.

The Church of St. Peter is located here, which was so severely damaged by the 1962 earthquake that it had to be completely demolished. It was rebuilt in 1992 in its original form.

A lighthouse built in 1884 stands on the western part of the peninsula.

Shell Museum

The museum called Malakološki muzej is located in the basement of the Franciscan monastery.

It’s one of the largest shell museums in Europe, with thousands of pieces on display. Most of the exhibition was collected by monk Jure Radic.

Observatory

There’s a recently built observatory in the city center, which can be a pleasant evening program for those wanting to observe the sky.

Vepric

Not far from Makarska, we find a beautiful Marian pilgrimage site.

The Croatian sanctuary was erected in honor of Our Lady of Lourdes at the beginning of the 20th century. The environment of the cave was shaped by the hills and valley gullies, similar to the original pilgrimage site in Lourdes, France.

Several pilgrimages are held annually, making it one of Croatia’s most significant pilgrimage sites.

City Beach (Gradska plaža)

Makarska’s most famous beach is located in the city area, starting from the St. Peter’s Peninsula.

The pebble beach deepens moderately, behind it a row of pine trees and several restaurants and bars await tourists. Most consider it the most beautiful city beach in Croatia.

Nugal

We find this beach in a beautiful environment 2 km south of Makarska’s city center.

The beach is under cliffs, and after heavy rain, a waterfall also cascades down the rocks. The beach can be reached through the forest, with about a 40-minute walk, which includes some elevation. However, during the walk, there are several places with a beautiful view of the sea.

It’s important to know that it’s a nudist beach!

Plaza Cvitacka

Located just 2.5 km north of the city center, accessible via a built promenade.

The beach extends into the sea in a small triangle shape, similar to Zlatni Rat on Brac island. It’s a pleasant place to relax, and it’s usually not very crowded.

Makarska Riviera attractions, beaches

The northernmost part of the riviera is Omis, and the southern endpoint is Gradac. There are several excellent beaches and towns along the nearly 80 km long stretch.

Brela

This charming town is located 15 km northwest of Makarska, known for its beach and a rock.

The rock called Kamen Brela is located on the Punta Rata beach area. The small rocky island and the pine trees on it have become one of the symbols of the Makarska Riviera.

The aforementioned Punta Rata is among the world’s most beautiful pebble beaches. If you travel to the riviera, swimming here is almost mandatory!

Biokovo Skywalk

For those who want the most beautiful view, aim for the mountain range above Makarska.

The Biokovo viewpoint is located in Biokovo National Park, 6 km from Makarska. A 13-kilometer road of poor quality leads up from the entrance.

Tickets must be purchased at the information point at the entrance, which is valid for the entire park.

The glass-floored viewpoint extends over the abyss, so it’s a bit „tricky” for those afraid of heights. But the view compensates everyone.

Sveti Jure

The highest point of the Biokovo mountain range behind Makarska at 1762 meters. It’s also the 3rd highest point in Croatia.

We’ll have a breathtaking view if we drive up here. The more sporty ones can even bike up to the peak!

It can be approached on a winding serpentine road leading from the viewpoint. However, be careful because the road is barely wider than a car, and pulling over is quite difficult.

Omiš

The northernmost part of the Makarska Riviera starts from the town located at the mouth of the Cetina River.

It’s best known for its sandy beaches, shaped by the sediment of the Cetina River.

Velika, located at the mouth of the river, is among the most beautiful beaches on the Croatian Adriatic. The huge gray rock mass rising behind the city provides a wonderful experience for those relaxing on the fine sandy beach.

The Cetina River reaches the Adriatic through a narrow canyon, so excellent whitewater rafting trips can also be taken.

For those looking for even more adrenaline, they can try zip-lining over the river.

Drvenik

A small village in the southern part of the Makarska Riviera, best known for having several daily ferry services to Hvar island (see below about the island).

About 1.5 km from the village is the Gornja Vala beach. It’s one of the most popular beaches in the area, which is not as crowded even in summer as those further north.

Brac

It’s the third largest island in the Adriatic Sea, and with its 778-meter high Vidova Gora, it’s also the highest.

The southern side of the island is steep, meeting the sea with many rocky cliffs. The northern side, however, rises gently towards the interior of the island.

Here you’ll find one of the most beautiful beaches on the Croatian Adriatic, Zlatni Rat. The pebble beach called „golden horn” extends into the sea in a triangular shape, providing a beautiful sight.

Hvar

Located south of Brac, parallel to it, it’s a popular holiday destination. The island has many small, beautiful bays and beaches.

It’s the 4th largest in area, and with its 80 kilometers, it’s the 2nd longest island in the Adriatic after Cres island. Its highest peak is Sveti Nikola (Saint Nicholas) at 628 meters.

We can get to the village of Sućuraj at the eastern tip of the island by ferry from Drvenik. The ferry schedule can be found here!

The most beautiful settlement on the island is the town of Hvar. As it was an important port of the Venetian Republic, we can see several beautiful Venetian buildings.

On the northern shore, Stari Grad and Vrboska are also worth attention. The latter is also known for a palm tree that stands in the harbor on a tiny island. It’s an excellent photography location.

Getting to Brac Island

You can cross from the mainland by ferry, from two main ports. From Split, you can reach Supetar in a 50-minute journey. From Makarska, Sumartin is accessible in a 1-hour journey. Both ferries can carry cars and caravans!

Brac attractions

Supetar

The capital of Brac, where most tourists arrive by ferry from Split. It’s popular for its charming harbor, numerous accommodations, and restaurants.

Its most famous building is the parish church dedicated to the Annunciation. Built in the 17th century on the foundations of an early Christian basilica, its current form was established in the 1730s. In the church courtyard, there is a statue of Mother Teresa by sculptor Petar Jakšić.

About 900 meters from the city center, take a walk to the Sveti Nikola peninsula, where there is a charming cemetery with interesting tombstones and the white-domed, neo-Byzantine Petrinović mausoleum. Among the ancient relics, you can find two early Christian sarcophagi and the remains of a 6th-century villa rustica. Additionally, the view of the city is beautiful from here.

Olive Oil Museum (Muzej Uja)

Olive oil cultivation is popular on the southern Adriatic islands of Croatia. Not far from Supetar, near the village of Skrip, a museum has been established.

It showcases the history of oil making, and you can taste Brac olive oil and berries, as well as other local specialties. The tour takes place in an old olive mill, very interesting.

Bol

The most significant settlement on the south coast, thanks to the nearby famous Zlatni Rat beach (more on this below).

Bol is a secluded bay settlement, surrounded by olive trees and vineyards, with charming old buildings and romantic coves. The town has many accommodations.

Be sure to visit the Dominican monastery on the Glavica peninsula, founded in the 15th century. The complex houses a collection of archaeological, numismatic, early printed books, and liturgical objects. Particularly valuable is Jacopo Tintoretto’s altar painting „The Madonna with Child and Saints.”

A road from the town leads to the 778-meter-high Vidova Gora, offering beautiful views of the surrounding islands.

Sumartin

This is where the ferries from Makarska arrive. A popular holiday destination with lush Mediterranean vegetation, charming streets, and a small church.

From the harbor, there is a view of the opposite Makarska and the steep, barren Biokovo mountains. Its small pebble beaches and little bays offer captivating views.

Pučišća

Located on the northern coast between Supetar and Sumartin, at the end of a deeply indented bay.

In this small town, you may notice many ornate buildings and artifacts. The reason is that Croatia’s largest stonemasonry school is located here.

The view is stunning if you arrive by boat. The stone houses rise in tiers along the bay, as if sailing into an amphitheater.

Milna

Milna is a settlement along an inlet on the western part of Brac. From the heights above the town, there’s a beautiful view of its busy harbor, quaint streets, churches, and Mediterranean-style gardens.

From the harbor, you can clearly see the parish church dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Its richly decorated facade stands between two huge palm trees, which have become symbols of both the church and the town.

Blaca Monastery

Located between Bol and Milna, in a wooded area, this protected cultural monument was established.

The community of Poljica monks was founded in the mid-16th century under the Ljubitovica cave. In the 18th and 19th centuries, they built a two-story stone building here with a church, which has survived to this day with its complete furnishings, astronomical instruments, printing press, archives, and library.

Off the main road, there is a parking area, but a slow-going dirt road leads there. From the parking area, there is about a 2 km long uphill walking path to the monastery.

Vidova Gora

I mentioned near Bol that you can hike up to Brac’s highest point from the town.

Zlatni Rat

Considered not only Brac’s but also one of the most beautiful beaches in the Croatian Adriatic. Its unmistakable shape can be seen in numerous photos.

Named the Golden Horn, this beach extends into the sea in a long triangular shape, which changes in shape and length depending on the tides, currents, and winds. It mainly consists of a white pebble beach, with the remaining part covered by a Mediterranean pine forest.

Martinica Beach

Located on the eastern side of Bol town, along the Dominican Monastery.

This pebbly beach is in a calm bay with beautiful views.

Lovrečina

Between Postira and Pucisca, in a bay, lies this exceptionally beautiful beach.

There are few sandy beaches on Brac island, and this is one of the most beautiful. Its shallow waters make it perfect for small children.

Murvica Beach

3.5 km west of Zlatni Rat is a quiet, yet inviting beach.

A beautiful beach with crystal clear water. It is accessible by car and is worth visiting for a peaceful beach experience.

With the Dinaric Alps closest to the sea here, we find one of the most beautiful coastal areas of the Croatian Adriatic.

The town nestles under soaring mountain ranges, offering a stunning panorama from the famous Saint Peter’s Peninsula.

It’s no wonder it’s one of Croatia’s most beautiful places, as the Makarska Riviera stretches nearly 80 km along the coastline.

It’s worth visiting multiple locations here, as there are excellent beaches and hidden coves to discover. From here, it’s also the easiest access to the island of Brač.

Plitvice Lakes

One of Europe’s most beautiful natural attractions, the lake system attracts many visitors throughout the year.

Plitvice Lakes National Park consists of sixteen larger and two smaller cascading lakes, connected by numerous spectacular waterfalls. This, along with the surrounding environment, has gained international fame.

The highest lake lies at 637 meters, from where the water reaches the lowest lake at nearly 500 meters. In high water, you can see up to 200 waterfalls!

Rovinj

Istria is a popular destination for Hungarians, where Rovinj is perhaps the most beautiful coastal town.

Its old town, jutting into the sea, consists of narrow streets and alleys built around the Saint Euphemia Church. The city’s Romanesque-Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical buildings have preserved an ancient atmosphere with their windows, terraces, balconies, rooftop terraces, gateways, and stairways.

There are many other beautiful towns in Istria, but Rovinj stands out among them.

Dubrovnik

Croatia’s southernmost major city, and perhaps the most beautiful in the country.

I think everyone has seen pictures of its old town. Many European cities have beautiful old towns, but this is surely among the most beautiful! It’s no surprise that it has long been part of the Cultural World Heritage.

You can walk through narrow alleys within the 25-meter high city walls, where many cafes and restaurants are hidden. And for a fantastic view, take the cable car from the old town to the top of the mountain.

Korčula

Did you know that Marco Polo was born here in 1254? At least according to local lore, though there’s no evidence of this. But this shows it’s not just any Croatian place!

The island, located between Makarska and Dubrovnik, has a center, the town of the same name, that is a must-see! The town is also known as ‘Little Dubrovnik’ due to its similarly stunning old town by the sea.

Especially during summer, you can often see programs organized around the Moreška sword dance. This tradition, with its fast rhythm, is now only visible in this region of the Mediterranean and is a popular attraction.

Zadar

It should be noted that here too, there is a peninsula with a wonderful old town built on it.

Zadar’s old town preserves numerous Roman and Venetian remnants. The most beautiful examples include the Land Gate, the Cathedral of Saint Anastasia, and the Captain’s Tower.

The city is a great starting point if you’re visiting the nearby islands of Pag or Vir.

Krk Island

The second-largest island in the Croatian Adriatic is popular among Hungarians, as it doesn’t require much travel to reach.

On the island, everyone can find their favorite pastime. You can walk in the beautiful old town of Krk, the center of the island, enjoy the beaches of Baska, explore the Tuscan-style small town of Vrbnik, or visit a stalactite cave.

Zlatni Rat

Earlier, when mentioning Makarska, I referred to the island of Brač. One of the most beautiful and well-known Croatian beaches is located there.

On the southern part of the island, the “Golden Horn” beach is an iconic image of Croatia. The pebble beach extends in a triangle shape into the sea, offering a magnificent view.

Zagreb

The Croatian capital is conveniently located on the way to the Adriatic Sea, making it a perfect city tour destination!

The Upper Town and Kaptol Hill house Zagreb’s historical memories, where almost all the sights can be found. The most beautiful building is the cathedral, one of the finest Gothic churches in Europe. It has a Hungarian connection, as it was built by King Ladislaus I.

But it’s also worth visiting in winter for a day! The Zagreb Advent Fair has been named Europe’s best Christmas market several times, making the trip well worth it.

Split

The second largest city in Croatia is one of the centers of the Adriatic. Its historic old town is located within the walls of the former Diocletian’s Palace. The ancient palace, built around 300 AD, was constructed by the Roman Emperor Diocletian, where he lived after his abdication. It has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979.

The city is famous for its seaside promenade, the Riva. The street is filled with shops, restaurants, bars, and beautiful palm trees.

Split is also an important transportation hub. It is the easiest point from which to reach the islands of Hvar and Brac. Many consider that the most beautiful part of the Croatian Adriatic, including Makarska and Dubrovnik, begins south of the city.

Trogir

The town near Split is actually located on a small island between the island of Čiovo and the mainland. Its surroundings feature numerous picturesque bays. The historical city center is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The old town developed within the city walls built between the 13th and 15th centuries. The main parts of its defensive system are the Kamerlengo Fortress and the St. Mark’s Tower. The Kamerlengo Fortress is located in the southwestern part of the island, with St. Mark’s Tower to the south.

In the main square of the town stands the St. Lawrence Cathedral, built in Romanesque-Gothic style. Its main portal, created by Master Radovan in 1240, is the most valuable architectural sculpture in Dalmatia.

Motovun

In Istria, not only the coastlines and coastal towns are the main attractions, but also a town built on a hilltop in the middle of the peninsula.

Above the colorful houses on the hillside, a fortress stands on the top, whose walls were already standing in the 13th century. Their length is 436 meters, and their height varies between 9 and 15 meters.

Today it has developed into a significant tourist village. If you are heading to the Istrian coast, be sure to visit!

Krka National Park

Located between Zadar and Split, near Šibenik, the park encompasses much of the Krka River from Skradin to Knin.

The national park can be explored by bus, boat, and on foot. Its most beautiful feature is a large waterfall, Skradinski Buk. Visitors can enjoy the park’s diverse wildlife and eroded landscapes while walking the 1900-meter trail that circles the waterfall.

The area around the park is also rich in historical monuments. The most valuable of these, beyond the waterfall, is a Franciscan monastery situated on a small island in the middle of a lake.

Hvar

Finally, we close our list of Croatia’s most beautiful sights with another island.

Located south of the island of Brac, parallel to it, this elongated island is one of the most popular tourist destinations. The international press has repeatedly ranked it among the most beautiful islands in the world.

Hvar is one of Europe’s sunniest islands, famous not only for its beaches but also for its lavender and olive plantations.

Osijek

The center of the eastern part of the country lies on the banks of the Drava River. The city features numerous beautiful Art Nouveau buildings.

The most significant building in the city center is the fortress. Its central square, the Holy Trinity Square, is lined with 18th-century Baroque buildings. The most notable among them is the two-story palace of the Slavonian Military Command, the Generalkomande.

A standout attraction is the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. This Neo-Gothic church, built of red bricks, has a bell tower that is 90 meters high, making it the second tallest church tower in Croatia and all of Southeast Europe.

Montenegro’s 240 kilometres of coastline have long been a tourist destination. Its attractive landscapes, picturesque old stone houses and beaches attract tourists from home and abroad. It is bordered by Croatia to the west, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the north-west, Serbia to the north-east, Kosovo to the east and Albania to the south-east.

Kotor

What better place to start than with Montenegro’s iconic location, Kotor? The city lies in the bay of the same name, embraced by mountains ranging from 1000 to 1700 meters in height.

Kotor’s old Mediterranean port and the surrounding city walls, built by the Serbian Nemanjić dynasty, are well-preserved and under UNESCO protection. The city’s appearance is significantly influenced by centuries of Venetian rule.

The medieval city walls stretch up to the fortress of Saint John (Sveti Ivan) at 260 meters, where a somewhat exhausting climb rewards you with a magnificent panorama of the city and the entire Bay of Kotor.

Ostrog Monastery

This Serbian Orthodox church is located between Podgorica and Niksic and is Montenegro’s most popular pilgrimage site and one of the most visited churches in the Balkans.

Built in the 17th century into a cliff by the Bishop of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Saint Basil of Ostrog, it’s where he also died, and his body is still kept in the monastery.

The drive there is beautiful, with great views from the serpentine road, and the road quality is pretty good, making the ascent easy.

Budva

Another tourism stronghold of Montenegro, alongside Kotor. Besides natural beauty, such as islands and picturesque coastlines, Budva is rich in historical memories.

The old town lies on a small peninsula and is a cradle of cultural heritage. Narrow streets intersect with small squares and famous buildings like the Holy Trinity Church, housing the tomb of writer Stjepan Mitrov Ljubisa, and the churches of Sv. Ivan, Sv. Bogorodica, and Sv. Sava.

Sveti Stefan

Close to Budva, don’t miss the small island of Sveti Stefan, just 8 km from the old town.

The name refers to a small island that is a hotel complex. Near the entrance is the pebbly beach of the same name, one of Montenegro’s most popular beaches.

The hotel is high-end, offering houses instead of rooms. Be prepared for a significant expense…

Gospa od Škrpjela Church

In the Bay of Kotor lies a small island with the Church of Our Lady of the Rocks. The island offers a fantastic view.

Legend has it that Kotor sailors threw a rock into the sea after each successful voyage as thanks to God, eventually forming this small island.

This legend is celebrated every July 22nd, the feast day of Madonna, the island’s patron saint.

The small museum inside the church is worth a visit to learn about the island’s history.

Long Beach (Velika plaža)

In Montenegro’s south, near the Albanian border, stretches the country’s longest Adriatic beach.

Near Ulcinj town, the coastal strip is about 10 km long. Its advantage is the fine (grey) sandy and shallow shoreline, ideal for families with small children.

The further you go from Ulcinj, the quieter the beach becomes. The farthest part of the beach is near Bojana Island, close to the Albanian border, where tranquility is accompanied by a few restaurants and not much else.

Perast

Though we might be inclined to declare Kotor as the most beautiful town in the Bay of Kotor, Perast could also claim this title!

The aforementioned Church Island and the neighboring Saint George (Sveti Dorde) Island both belong to the town, each an integral part of Perast. I didn’t group the church and the town together because each, individually, is one of Montenegro’s most beautiful places.

Perast is a truly peaceful little town, especially since car traffic is restricted in the summer, allowing pedestrians to leisurely explore the attractions.

Njegos Mausoleum (Lovcen National Park)

It’s rare to find a mausoleum on the highest mountain of a national park. Well, in Montenegro, you can experience this!

Located near Kotor on a mountain peak, it is the burial place of the famous philosopher-poet Petar Petrović-Njegos, a significant figure in Montenegrin history, making it a popular site for locals.

Besides, the panorama from the peak, over 1700 meters high, is a must-see! You can see the Bay of Kotor, reach views into Albania, and allegedly, on a very clear day, even Italy.

Be prepared for a bit of a climb though: nearly 500 steps to reach this breathtaking view.

Skadar Lake (Shkodrai Lake)

The largest lake on the Balkan Peninsula stretches into Albania.

Especially its northern part, near Podgorica, is canyon-like, offering several spots for stunning views. One of the most accessible viewpoints is Pavlova Strana, where the river flowing from the lake resembles the Danube Bend.

The lake is a rich habitat for wildlife, being one of Europe’s richest bird reserves, home to about 270 species, making it a great spot for bird watching.

Lipa Cave

Located not far from the main road between Budva and Podgorica, near the village of Lipa, this cave offers a 2.5 km trek underground, where they even organize music concerts.

The well-developed cave features various sizes and shapes of stalactites and stalagmites, similar to Aggtelek, with excellent guided tours.

Durmitor National Park

A bit off the beaten path, close to the Serbian-Bosnian border, this is considered one of Montenegro’s most beautiful areas!

The Durmitor peak is the country’s highest point (2523 m). The central area of the massif is formed by the Tara, Draga, and Sušica rivers and their deep canyons.

For those who love hiking, trekking, and biking in stunning surroundings, this place is worth a visit!

Piva Canyon

At the foot of Dormitor, stretching north-south, lies the Piva River and its dammed lake.

The 220-meter-high dam, built in 1970, is one of Europe’s largest structures of its kind. The main road passes over the dam, offering a chance to see it up close and enjoy the view.

The lake’s water is incredibly clear, and there are developed bathing spots along its shores.

Puglia, also known as Apulia, is located in the southeastern part of Italy and is famous for its beaches, historical cities, which include the famous trulli and baroque towns.

The most beautiful places in Puglia

Alberobello

Starting with the most well-known place first. Here you can find the famous trulli, which have made the city a part of UNESCO World Heritage.

A trullo is a form of housing: circular in plan, with cylindrical walls and a conical roof, its chimney is at the top of the roof. It’s the stone-built version of a teepee. Many of them can be seen in the so-called monumental zone.

Their development is tied to taxation. Since taxes had to be paid on houses in the 1700s, by order of Count Giangirolamo II Acquaviva of Conversano, houses were built that could be easily dismantled when the tax collector came, and quickly rebuilt after their departure.

Monopoli

The city is visited for its beaches and historical center.

In its downtown, there are labyrinth-like streets where we can walk among whitewashed houses. Its most beautiful building is the Cathedral of Maria Santissima della Madia. The 12th-century Apulian Romanesque church is famous for the icon of Madonna della Madia.

On the beachfront stands a 16th-century fortress, Castello di Carlo V. Built by order of Charles V of Habsburg to protect the city from maritime attacks. It later lost its significance and served as a prison for centuries.

Several wonderful beaches and bays can be found around the city. Examples include Cala Porta Vecchia, Porto Verde, and Capitolo.

Bari

The capital of Puglia, and the second-largest city in Southern Italy after Naples, serves as a starting point for exploring the province.

The Romanesque style is strongly present in the city, blended with local Byzantine and Saracen influences. A standout example is the Basilica of San Nicola, built in the 11th century. It’s one of the most significant church buildings in European Christianity and an important pilgrimage site not just for Roman Catholics but also for Orthodox Christians.

Bari’s old town, Barivecchia, is located on the eastern part, where the ancient city walls still stand. It features labyrinth-like, irregularly branching streets and characteristic medieval buildings.

South of the old town lies Murattiano, the city area with a carefully planned, grid-like street layout. Its main street is Corso Vittorio Emanuele, lined with magnificent palaces built in the 19th century. Here is also the main shopping street, Via Sparano, offering luxury goods.

Ostuni

Its old town, also known as the Citadel or the White City due to its whitewashed buildings, is famous. The most significant buildings are the cathedral and the Episcopal Palace, as well as several noble palaces.

Ostuni is not only popular for its architecture. The olive groves around the city and beaches, such as Costa Merlata, add to its attraction.

Lecce

Located in the southern part of Puglia, on the Salento Peninsula, it’s often called the Florence of the South due to its unified cityscape defined by numerous baroque buildings.

It experienced its golden age in the 17th century when the city was under the control of local bishops. This is when its imposing baroque buildings were constructed. A main characteristic of Lecce baroque is that it does not transform the space, i.e., it stays true to classical architectural forms. However, in terms of decoration, it moves towards more richness and elaboration.

The most significant building is the Basilica of Santa Croce. The church, built in the 14th century, is the finest example of Lecce baroque. Its main feature is the richly decorated façade.

The old town’s center is Piazza Sant’Oronzo in the eastern part of the city, named after the column holding the statue of Saint Orontius. This was the medieval city’s marketplace. The most beautiful buildings stand along Via Visconti and Via Mocenigo.

Matera

The city is famous for the Sassi di Matera, a complex of districts consisting of cave dwellings that form the historical center, which has been part of UNESCO’s World Heritage since 1993.

People lived in these prehistoric cave labyrinths without electricity or water up until the 1950s. It was then that the inhabitants were relocated. In 1993, UNESCO declared the sassi of Matera a World Heritage Site, which today forms Italy’s largest open-air museum.

Polignano a Mare

The town is famous for its steep cliffs rising from the Adriatic Sea, clear blue waters, and the natural caves that line the coast.

Polignano a Mare’s symbol is Lama Monachile. This beautiful little bay where the crystal blue sea meets rocky shores offers a spectacular view.

The famous Italian singer, Domenico Modugno, known for his song „Volare” was born in the town. A statue of him is placed on the seaside promenade, offering a beautiful view of the Adriatic Sea.

Castel del Monte

The most famous of the castles built by Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1996 because of its interesting and unique architectural solutions.

The castle, built in the 1240s, is also referred to as Apulia’s „stone crown” due to its unique octagonal layout. As it lacks the usual military elements of the era, it was probably primarily a representative fortress and only secondarily of a military nature.

Martina Franca

Located in the Itria Valley, the city stands out for its baroque and rococo architecture.

One of the main attractions is the Basilica di San Martino, dedicated to the patron saint of Martina Franca and a stunning example of local baroque architecture. The interior of the basilica is richly decorated with frescoes, gilded carvings, and a magnificent main altar.

The city hosts the famous Valle d’Itria Festival, an internationally renowned opera festival that attracts lovers of classical music and opera from all over the world.

Cisternino

The town is built on top of a 392-meter-high hill overlooking the Itria River valley, thus it is situated in a magnificent environment.

Its center is made up of narrow streets and whitewashed buildings. Several buildings in the town also exhibit the trulli style. The Torre Civica, or Civic Tower, is one of the main historical buildings, having been a central place for community life over the centuries.

Berat

One of Albania’s oldest settlements, previously inhabited by the Illyrians, was founded by the king of Macedonia in 314 BC as Antipatreia.

Its most famous part is the fortress district. The castle hill, steeply rising on the right bank of the Osum river, is surrounded by outer walls and fortifications from the rule of the Despot of Epirus, Michael I, in the 13th century, which remain in good condition. Once home to over thirty Eastern Orthodox churches, today ten remain in nearly original form.

Llogara Pass

The pass creates a connection between the Vlorë Bay area and the Albanian Riviera, at an elevation of 1027 meters above sea level.

Apollonia

As an important city of ancient Illyria, it’s one of Albania’s most significant archaeological sites.

At its height, the city, along with Epidamnos to the north, played a dominant role in the economic, social, and cultural life of the Illyrian territories for a millennium.

Saranda

Influenced by various civilizations, including the Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines, notable remains include the amphitheater, Roman baths, medieval basilica, and the famous Lion Gate.

Blue Eye Spring

This popular tourist attraction’s clear, blue water emerges from a pool more than fifty meters deep.

The force of the water is such that in the center of the spring, it rises 10-15 cm. If a stone is thrown into the center, it does not sink immediately but drifts to the side before sinking.

The spring’s surroundings are a protected area, with oak and sycamore trees, among about twenty other springs.

Durrës

Located on the Adriatic Sea plain, opposite the Italian port cities of Brindisi and Bari.

The city’s several kilometers long sandy beach has been discovered by tourists, so there’s a lot of activity in Durrës during the summer. Its proximity to Tirana makes it a popular holiday destination for locals as well.

The biggest attraction is the 2nd-century Roman amphitheater, discovered entirely by accident in the 20th century. The amphitheater has been partially excavated, revealing an ornately mosaicked chapel underneath the spectator stands in its entirety.

Dajti Mountain

Located east of Tirana, it is one of the country’s most popular natural attractions as part of the Dajti National Park, making the mountain and its surroundings a popular excursion spot.

Dajti Mountain is also known as „Tirana’s Balcony” because of the spectacular view of the city and surrounding area it offers. The easiest way to reach the mountain’s summit is via the Dajti Ekspres cable car, offering a unique experience even on the way up.
