Day 1

I arrived on Thursday morning from San Francisco after an overnight bus journey. First, I traveled from Union Station to Long Beach in the southern part of the city. The metro runs mostly above ground, and you can see a lot of littered areas. This isn’t the real glamour one expects from LA.

Long Beach, however, is a very pleasant place, with fancy yachts in the palm-lined harbor. The aquarium is also located here.

I traveled back to Union Station because the free shuttle to Dodger Stadium departed from there. The baseball game was at an interesting time: Thursday at 12 o’clock. To this day, I don’t understand why it was on a weekday at noon. It showed in the attendance too, as the stadium was only half full.

Although I don’t know the rules of baseball, it was definitely worth going. Firstly, I had never been before, and secondly, I got to see live how Americans make a show out of everything. During the breaks, there were constantly some kind of prize games. For example, couples had to kiss and one of them was selected by the camera, and they immediately won some small prize.

Even David Beckham was there, who has been living in Los Angeles for years. There was a big ovation when he appeared on the screen.

The entire game lasted nearly four hours; they really drag it out with these constant breaks. By the end, it was a bit boring, but overall it was a great experience.

Since I was quite tired, I dozed off a bit at my accommodation in Koreatown and only went out for dinner.

Day 2

On this day, I had a ticket to Universal Studios. I thought I would be there until about the afternoon, but I enjoyed it so much that I stayed until 8 PM.

I arrived at the entrance at 9 AM by metro and then the studio’s special bus. Well, anyone who comes here should really set aside a full day! Especially if arriving with children. There are lots of things to try in a huge area. Of course, the 4D programs were my favorites.

I liked the Harry Potter castle the best, and I tried it twice. Both times I had to queue for about half an hour, which is unfortunately the case in most places. But it’s worth it for the experience!

I joined the studio tour, where they take you around in a small train while the guide explains everything. Famous movie cars are displayed (Magnum, Fast and Furious, The Flintstones, etc.), and the most famous scene from War of the Worlds is still standing.

On the way back to my accommodation, I got off on Hollywood’s main street to see the glamour at night as well. Well, here too you have to face the negative side. There are many beggars and homeless people on the street, not the most uplifting sight.

Day 3

In the morning, the coastal area, Santa Monica and its surroundings were on the program. The weather was pleasant, and there were lots of people on the beach. The view from here is fantastic; you can see all the way to the shores of Malibu.

The Santa Monica Pier was a must-visit, where besides the amusement park, there’s also the sign marking the end of Route 66.

From here I walked south to Venice Beach, from where I explored the Venice Canals area. This is an artificial canal area with bridges and, of course, nice little houses on the shore. It’s a charming neighborhood, worth taking a walk.

I headed towards Hollywood by bus. Fortunately, there were few beggars now, so I could peacefully explore the Walk of Fame area. You can see the stars of many celebrities; you can spend time finding your favorites.

Not far from there, a bus departs for the Griffith Observatory, from where there’s a magnificent view of the city and the famous Hollywood sign. I deliberately went late afternoon so I could photograph Los Angeles in the brilliant sunshine and then when illuminated after dusk.

After that, I only had time for dinner before heading back to my accommodation, as I was leaving early the next morning for San Diego.

The 12 best museums in Los Angeles

Getty Center Museum

Founded by American oil billionaire J. Paul Getty, the institution consists of two building complexes: the Getty Center in Los Angeles houses modern art treasures, while ancient masterpieces can be viewed in a villa built in an antique style in Pacific Palisades, California.

The Getty Villa is modeled after a building in the Italian city of Herculaneum. Its rooms display paintings by Van Gogh and Gauguin. The exhibition showcases not only paintings, drawings, and sculptures but also furniture and ornate utilitarian objects.

The museum also appeared in a film: the 1997 movie „Bean: The Ultimate Disaster Movie” starring Rowan Atkinson was filmed here.

One of Los Angeles’ most popular science museums, covering multiple subject areas.

Main sections:

• The Space Shuttle Endeavour is an iconic piece of space exploration that tells the story of the United States space program.
• The Ecosystems showcases Earth’s various ecosystems, such as rainforests, deserts, and oceans.
• The Creative World explores engineering sciences and innovation, including architecture, transportation, and technology.

Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)

The largest art museum on the West Coast, featuring artwork from around the world.

Main sections:

• Asian Art: pieces from India, China, Japan, and Korea’s artistic heritage, including sculptures, textiles, and ceramics.
• European Art: works by classical European painters such as Rembrandt, Renoir, and Cézanne.
• Contemporary Art: works by modern and contemporary artists such as Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons.
• Latin American Art: pre-Columbian artifacts and works by modern Mexican artists such as Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo.

Several famous works are on display. Notable among these is Urban Light, Chris Burden’s famous outdoor installation consisting of 202 cast iron street lamps. Another is Levitated Mass, Michael Heizer’s monumental sculptural work featuring a walkway under a 340-ton granite boulder.

Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County

One of the largest and most comprehensive natural history museums in the USA, showcasing Earth’s history, biological diversity, and cultural heritage.

• Dinosaur Hall: one of the museum’s most famous sections, housing North America’s largest dinosaur skeleton collection, including massive Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops skeletons.

Hammer Museum

One of Los Angeles’ most renowned contemporary art centers. Founded in 1990, it bears the name of oil magnate Armand Hammer.

The museum pays special attention to showcasing contemporary art, particularly works by new and emerging artists. Its collection also includes works by famous artists such as Rembrandt, Van Gogh, and Monet.

The Broad

The museum has become world-renowned for its combination of innovative art and iconic architecture.

It boasts a collection of over 2,000 artworks spanning contemporary art from the mid-20th century to the present. It addresses themes such as identity, technology, social change, and the challenges of modern life.

Among its famous works is the Infinity Mirrored Room. This is Yayoi Kusama’s light and mirror installation that creates an illusion of senses and infinity.

Petersen Automotive Museum

One of the world’s most significant automotive museums, showcasing both transportation history and the development of the automotive industry.

Founded in 1994 by Robert E. Petersen, an automotive magazine publisher. The museum’s facade consists of 100,000 square feet of stainless steel ribbons, their undulating forms evoking the speed and movement of cars.

Its permanent exhibition presents the history of the automotive industry, from early vehicles to modern sports cars: classic cars, race cars, and custom-built models, including Rolls-Royce, Ferrari, and Bugatti.

A special part of the museum is the Vault, which showcases more than 250 rare and unique vehicles from around the world, including royal, presidential, and celebrity cars. This can only be visited as part of a guided tour.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA)

This museum showcases works of the modern era. More than 7,000 artworks can be seen, including paintings, sculptures, installations, and media art pieces.

Its permanent collection features works by defining artists of the second half of the 20th century and early 21st century, such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Barbara Kruger, and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Japanese American National Museum

Located in the heart of Little Tokyo in Los Angeles, this institution is the most significant guardian of the history and culture of the Japanese community living in the United States.

The museum uniquely presents the Japanese American experience, with particular emphasis on issues of immigration, assimilation, and identity. The rich material of the exhibitions provides insight into the community’s everyday life and historical struggles. The institution was founded in 1992 and is housed in the building of the historic Nishi Hongwanji Buddhist temple, which was built in 1925.

The collection contains more than 100,000 objects and photographs documenting the history of Japanese immigration from the 1880s to the present day. The most moving exhibition is the permanent display titled „Common Ground: The Heart of Community” which presents in detail the history of internment camps and the community’s survival strategies. The museum preserves original objects from Manzanar and other camps, personal letters, and diaries. Temporary exhibitions showcase contemporary Japanese American artists and modern issues of cultural identity.

Academy Museum of Motion Pictures

A true pilgrimage site for film lovers, this stunning museum showcases the history and magic of filmmaking.

The institution is located in Hollywood, along Wilshire Boulevard, and offers visitors one of the world’s most significant film art collections. The museum’s modern building is a sight to behold in itself.

The museum opened in September 2021, after decades of planning and development. The complex consists of two main parts: the Saban Building, which is a renovated art deco building from a former department store built in 1939 (originally the May Company), and the new sphere-shaped building made of glass and concrete, designed by Renzo Piano.

The museum’s collection includes 13 million photographs, 190,000 film cans, 80,000 screenplays, and 61,000 posters. Among the permanent exhibitions is „Stories of Cinema” which presents the history and technique of filmmaking with interactive elements. Visitors can see original Oscar statuettes, iconic film props, including the original shark from Jaws, Dorothy’s ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz, and costumes from numerous legendary films.

The museum’s 1,000-seat David Geffen Theater screens classic and contemporary films, while temporary exhibitions explore topics such as the work of Hayao Miyazaki or the filmmaking of Pedro Almodóvar.

Italian American Museum of Los Angeles

Located in Los Angeles’s historic Italian neighborhood, this charming, community-oriented museum celebrates the contributions of Italian immigrants to the city’s development.

The museum is a small but rich venue where visitors can learn about the history and cultural heritage of the Italian American community in Southern California. The institution places special emphasis on personal stories and family memories.

Los Angeles is the second-largest agglomeration in the United States. It’s an important economic and cultural center, and one of the world’s most significant entertainment industry hubs. Geographically, the city is large, spanning over 1,200 km², making it bigger than New York and Chicago.

Los Angeles attractions

Hollywood

Known as the center of the American film industry. Essentially, this refers to Hollywood Boulevard.

Its biggest attraction is the Walk of Fame. On the Hollywood Walk of Stars, you can find the names of the most famous people in the entertainment industry on a star. It can be a fun game to search for your favorite celebrity! 🙂

Over 2,000 names are already on the walk and continue to be added. If a star has made a significant contribution to the entertainment industry, they receive a star on the walk.

Other nearby attractions include Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, Guinness World Records Museum, and star hand and footprints in concrete next to the Chinese Theatre.

Unfortunately, there are quite a few homeless people in the area, which can be a bit degrading. Be prepared that not everything will be glamorous!

Access: Red metro to Hollywood / Vine Station.

Rodeo Drive

Located in Beverly Hills, this street is lined with luxury brand stores like Gucci, Prada, etc. It’s considered one of the world’s most expensive streets.

Even if not for shopping, it’s worth taking a walk. Who knows, you might run into a celebrity! 🙂

The Original Farmers Market

The city’s most famous and most touristy market. You can find everything here: fruits, hot food, souvenirs, etc.

You can try various cuisines: Mediterranean, Japanese, Israeli, Mexican, and more.

Beverly Hills

Los Angeles’ prestigious neighborhood where many celebrities live. Take a walk here – there’s a chance you might encounter a celebrity on the street!

Santa Monica

The city’s, and perhaps the West Coast’s, most famous beachfront area. This is the official end of Route 66, marked by a sign.

You might recognize this beach area from the Baywatch TV series. You’ll see many sports enthusiasts: surfers, soccer players, beach volleyball players.

It’s always bustling with numerous shops, cafes, and restaurants for tourists. The pier features an amusement park (Pacific Park) and an aquarium (Heal the Bay Aquarium).

Access: „E” (Expo) metro to Downtown Santa Monica terminal.

Venice

South of the Santa Monica beachfront, you’ll find Venice Beach.

I definitely recommend walking from the Santa Monica pier along the Venice boardwalk! Though it’s about 4 km, the atmosphere and scenery make it worthwhile!

A few streets inland, you’ll find the Venice Canals. Walk among the canal system – it’s a beautiful neighborhood!

Long Beach

The city’s southern coastal area with beautiful beaches and skyscrapers. This was one of my favorites in Los Angeles.

Its biggest attraction is the Queen Mary, the most famous luxury ship from the first half of the 20th century, anchored in the harbor.

Access: „A” (blue) metro to Downtown Long Beach stop.

OUE Skyspace

A downtown observation deck located on the 70th floor of the US Bank Tower. It offers a complete panoramic view of the city.

Unlike Griffith Park, you’ll see the city up close here, but if you want to see the entire city, go to the Griffith Observatory. Plus, that one is free, while this is paid.

Another attraction is the glass slide (skyslide), which lets you slide from the 70th to the 69th floor. Unfortunately, it’s quite short, so there’s not much chance to get scared.

Griffith Park and Observatory

Los Angeles’ best viewpoint, which is also a planetarium. It’s worth going before sunset to watch the city light up. A truly amazing experience!

Entry to the building is free, but planetarium shows are paid.

Access: From Vermont / Sunset metro station (red metro), take the DASH Observatory/Loz Felix bus to the final stop.

Walt Disney Concert Hall

An iconic building in downtown Los Angeles, home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Similar to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. No wonder – the same architect designed both. It’s one of the world’s best acoustic concert halls.

An imposing building definitely worth seeing. It has five concert halls, one of which is outdoors. You can enter and view the building for free during the day.

Funded by the Disney family. In gratitude, the rooftop garden features the Lillian Disney Garden, with a mosaic „Blue Ribbon” fountain built in Lillian Disney’s honor.

Union Station

Los Angeles’ main railway station, built in art deco style in the 1930s. It has an impressive hall and has been a filming location for several movies.

Dodger Stadium

Los Angeles’ baseball team is world-famous, as is its stadium. Free buses from Union Station take fans to the stadium.

If there’s a baseball game during your visit, don’t miss it! You’ll experience a true American show! I attended a game against San Diego – though I didn’t understand the game, the atmosphere was fantastic!

Angels Flight Railway

Connecting Hill Street and Grand Avenue in downtown since 1901. It’s also known as the world’s shortest railway.

It has two historical cars named after former Los Angeles residents: Olivet and Sinai. Both cars have a traditional wooden design in dark orange and black.

Although the ride is very short, it’s worth trying for the nostalgia and atmosphere!

Runyon Canyon Park

One of Los Angeles’ most popular outdoor locations near Hollywood Boulevard.

The park’s biggest draw is its spectacular panorama. From the heights, you’ll have a stunning view of downtown Los Angeles, the Pacific Ocean, and on clear days, even Catalina Island.

You can choose from three main hiking trails of varying difficulty levels. Runyon Canyon Road is perfect for easier walks. The Star Trail is of medium difficulty, while the Hero Trail is the steepest and most intense route.

Los Angeles programs

Universal Studios Hollywood

The most famous park of the famous film studio, a true high-tech amusement park. There are so many attractions that a full day is just enough to explore it.

Some shows include: Harry Potter Castle and 4D show, Waterworld film giant pool show, Krustyland: Simpsons family park, Jurassic Park adventure tour, Transformers 3D roller coaster.

Its most popular attraction is the studio tour. During the approximately half-hour trip, a live guide takes you through massive studio buildings and sets (you can’t get off the train).

To make it less boring, they’ve incorporated some attractions into this trip: Through 3D glasses, you can experience dinosaurs attacking the train and King Kong saving you, or a subway tunnel collapsing during an earthquake, or even dropping into a car chase from Fast and Furious.

One section displays famous vehicles side by side. You can see Magnum’s red Ferrari, the Back to the Future car, the Flintstones family vehicle.

A large area is dedicated to the Harry Potter film. Around the castle, you can spend time in shops and cafes from the movie.

To be honest, I didn’t plan to stay the whole day. However, I enjoyed myself so much that I left after dark. There were some shows (like the Harry Potter castle) that I sat through multiple times.

Access: Red metro to Universal City/Studio City stop, with a free shuttle bus to the entrance.

Disneyland

The amusement park created by Walt Disney in 1955 in Anaheim, 40 km from downtown. It was the world’s first entertainment-themed amusement park.

Disneyland Park is divided into 8 different „continents”: Main Street, U.S.A., Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, Mickey’s Toontown, Frontierland, Critter Country, New Orleans Square, and Adventureland.

The park has nearly 100 attractions, including Alice in Wonderland, Autopia, Chip ‘n Dale Treehouse, Disneyland Railroad, Goofy’s Playhouse, Indiana Jones Adventure, Mickey Mouse House.

Access: From Union Station, take the Metrolink Orange County Line or Amtrak Pacific Surfliner to Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center, then take bus 14 or 15.

Aquarium of the Pacific

Located on the Long Beach waterfront, it’s one of the USA’s largest aquariums.

The institution offers over 20 galleries and more than 12,000 marine creatures. The aquarium showcases marine life from three major ocean regions:

• North Pacific: Cold-water animals like sea otters, puffins, and jellyfish, plus a seabird zone.
• Tropical Pacific: Colorful coral reefs and tropical fish. Partly an outdoor exhibition showcasing reef ecosystems.
• Southern Pacific: An interactive shark and ray tank where visitors can touch these special animals. Also featuring turtles and exotic fish species.
