Lugano is one of Switzerland’s most popular tourist destinations, thanks to its wonderful location and outstanding cultural attractions.

The city’s character is defined by the magical combination of Italian architecture, palm-lined promenades, and surrounding mountains. Lugano is the third most important center of the world-famous Swiss banking system (after Zurich and Geneva). Due to its location, it is an important transportation hub from which Como and Milan are easily accessible.

Lugano attractions

Parco Ciani

The English garden on the shores of Lake Lugano is the city’s most popular public park, covering 63,000 square meters. Founded in 1845, the park is one of the city’s oldest and most beautiful green spaces, originally owned by the wealthy Ciani family before becoming city property in 1912.

The park’s special features include plane trees over 200 years old, exotic plants, and well-maintained flower beds that offer dazzling colors in spring and summer. Sculptures, fountains, and small romantic bridges placed along the pathways create a pleasant atmosphere.

The lakeside location offers wonderful views of the water and surrounding mountains. It is a favorite resting place for locals and tourists alike, where you can picnic, read, or simply stroll. In summer, it also hosts various cultural events and concerts.

Monte San Salvatore

The 912-meter high mountain is one of Lugano’s symbols, offering breathtaking panoramas of the city, the lake, and the surrounding Alps. A funicular has been taking visitors to the summit from the Paradiso district since 1890, making the journey in just 12 minutes.

On clear days, you can see all the way to Mont Blanc, the Apennines, and the Po Plain from the top. The 360-degree view encompasses both arms of Lake Lugano and the imposing mountain ranges. At the summit, there is a small chapel and a museum showcasing the mountain’s geological and natural treasures.

Hiking trails also lead to the summit on foot, at various difficulty levels. The mountain was once Hemingway’s favorite place in Lugano. A restaurant and terrace await visitors, where you can taste local specialties alongside the stunning views.

Via Nassa

The main street of the historic old town is Lugano’s most elegant shopping street, attracting visitors with its arcaded corridors and exclusive shops.

The street is of medieval origin, with its characteristic Lombard-style arcades built in the 15th-16th centuries and forming part of the protected heritage. Along Via Nassa, luxury brands, jewelers, Swiss watch salons, and antique shops line up.

The route starts from Piazza Cioccaro and leads to the Santa Maria degli Angioli church. Besides shops, numerous cafés and restaurants can be found here.

Santa Maria degli Angioli

The Franciscan monastery church was built in 1499 and houses Lugano’s most significant religious monument. The building was originally located outside the city walls but is now an integral part of the center, close to the lakefront.

The church’s real treasure is Bernardino Luini’s Renaissance fresco from 1529, depicting the Passion of Christ. The monumental wall painting covers the entire altar wall of the church and is considered an outstanding work of North Italian Renaissance art. The fresco’s richness of color and detail is stunning, reflecting the influence of Leonardo da Vinci’s school.

The church’s interior is simple, which highlights the significance of the fresco. Additional smaller Luini frescoes can also be viewed beside the altar. The church also hosts cultural programs and concerts, being particularly popular for classical music performances due to its excellent acoustics.

Piazza della Riforma

The heart of Lugano, this central main square is the center of the city’s social and cultural life. The rectangular square was created in its current form in 1830, bordered by neoclassical buildings on all sides. The square takes its name from the cantonal constitutional reform of 1830.

Facing the square is the Palazzo Civico, or City Hall, built in 1844 in neoclassical style. Its façade is adorned with statues of notable Ticino personalities. The ground floors of the buildings surrounding the square house restaurants, cafés, and boutiques.

In summer, it is one of Lugano’s liveliest places, filled with people sitting on terraces. The city’s major events, concerts, fairs, and the Estival Jazz festival in July are held here. In winter, it hosts a Christmas market with an ice rink and festive lighting.

Cattedrale di San Lorenzo

Lugano’s cathedral stands atop a hill in the city’s historic core, offering excellent views of the lake and city. The first church was built on this site in the 9th century, while the current building began to take its present form in the 13th century, then was rebuilt in Renaissance style in the 15th-16th centuries.

The most striking feature of the façade is the three Renaissance portals adorned with rich stone carvings and reliefs. The central portal’s tympanum is particularly valuable, with carvings dating from 1517. The façade is framed by two towers, though only one was fully completed.

The interior is three-naved, beautifully decorated with frescoes and stuccos. The baroque side altars and richly decorated ceiling are impressive. The stairs leading to the cathedral and the surrounding small squares exude a Mediterranean atmosphere. The church hosts regular services and cultural events, with organ concerts frequently held within its walls.

The city’s cathedral

Lugano Lake Boat Tour

The 48.7 square kilometer lake lies on the border between Switzerland and Italy and is Lugano’s main natural attraction. The lake has a special U-shape with two arms, between which Monte San Salvatore rises. The water surface has a maximum depth of 288 meters, and its crystal-clear water and surrounding mountains offer a stunning sight.

Passenger boats and excursion boats run regular routes connecting lakeside settlements. The shipping company offers various routes, from short one-hour tours to full-day excursions. The routes touch Swiss and Italian lakeside villages, each with its unique character.

From the boats, there are unparalleled views of waterfront villas, the green mountain slopes, and picturesque bays. A boat trip at sunset is particularly popular.

It is also worth admiring the city from a boat

Monte Brè

The 925-meter high mountain rises directly above Lugano and is known as „Switzerland’s sunniest mountain”. The funicular to the summit has been running from the Cassarate district since 1908, itself a historically significant means of transport. From the top, a 360-degree panorama unfolds before visitors.

The view includes Lake Lugano, the city, the surrounding mountains, and on clear days, you can see all the way to the Apennines. At the top of Monte Brè is a charming small village, Brè, which has preserved its traditional Ticino character. The village features narrow streets, stone houses, and small cobblestone squares awaiting strollers.

The Wilhelm Schmid Museum operates in the village, dedicated to the locally-born expressionist painter. Several restaurants and terraces are located at the summit and in the village, where local specialties can be tasted. Hiking trails lead down to the valley and to other mountains, at varying difficulty levels.

Parco San Grato

The 62,000 square meter botanical garden is located near the village of Carona, at 690 meters altitude, on the northern side of Monte San Salvatore. The park was opened in 1956 and has been continuously expanding its plant collection since. The special microclimate allows for the cultivation of both Mediterranean and Alpine plants together.

The garden’s main pride is its collection of azaleas and rhododendrons, which includes more than 1,000 varieties. In late April and early May, the park transforms into a veritable sea of flowers when these plants bloom simultaneously.

Thematic garden sections showcase different plant families: camellias, magnolias, tulip trees, and numerous exotic plants. Along the park’s walking paths are viewpoints offering stunning panoramas of Lake Lugano and the surrounding mountains. A wooden observation tower also stands in the park, from which the landscape can be admired from even higher.

Gandria

The picturesque fishing village on the eastern shore of Lake Lugano, just 5 kilometers from the city, feels like stepping into another world. The settlement clings to the mountainside, with houses built almost on top of each other following the steep terrain. A network of narrow, winding streets, stairs, and arcades makes up the village.

Gandria is one of the best-preserved medieval settlements in the Ticino region. Cars cannot enter the center, creating a particularly peaceful, authentic atmosphere. The house façades are pastel-colored, with flowers adorning their balconies. Along the waterfront, atmospheric terrace restaurants await visitors.

From Lugano, it can be reached by boat or on foot via the beautiful lakeside walking route. The walking route is especially recommended as it offers wonderful views of the lake. The Swiss Customs Museum operates in the village, providing interesting insights into the history of smuggling and border control due to its proximity to the Italian border.

The nearby village is located in beautiful surroundings

Best museums in Lugano

LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura

The modern cultural center opened in 2015 on the lakefront, on the site of an old railway station. The building was designed by renowned Italian architect Ivano Gianola, characterized by contemporary design and functionality. The white, geometric-shaped structure is home to both traditional and modern art.

The center combines multiple functions: museum, concert hall, and theater. The museum section presents Swiss and international contemporary art, as well as housing the Cantonal Art Collection, which contains 19th and 20th century works. Exhibitions change regularly, so there is always something new.

The LAC’s 1,000-seat concert hall has excellent acoustics and hosts classical music concerts and opera performances. The 200-seat theater provides a venue for experimental performances and smaller productions. The square in front of the building, Piazza Bernardino Luini, serves as a venue for cultural events, fairs, and outdoor programs. The LAC restaurant’s panoramic terrace offers beautiful views of the lake.

All information can be found here!

MUSEC – Museum of Cultures

The ethnographic museum presents the art and objects of non-European cultures. The institution was founded in 1989, initially as a cantonal ethnographic museum. In 2015, it moved to its current beautifully renovated villa, which is itself an architectural attraction.

The collection consists of material artifacts from African, Asian, Oceanic, and Native American cultures. Masks, sculptures, textiles, jewelry, and ritual objects represent different cultures. In addition to the permanent exhibition, regular temporary exhibitions are held, focusing on a deeper presentation of a particular culture or theme.

The museum’s goal is not only to present material culture but also to promote cultural dialogue and understanding of different worldviews. The park surrounding the villa, decorated with Mediterranean plants and sculptures, provides a pleasant environment for relaxation.

All information can be found here!

Hermann Hesse Museum

The museum of the Nobel Prize-winning German-Swiss writer is located in Montagnola, near Lugano, in the house where Hesse lived between 1919 and 1931. The building called Casa Camuzzi now serves entirely to present the writer’s life and work. The museum was founded in 1997 and has since become a pilgrimage site for Hesse fans.

The exhibition chronologically presents Hesse’s life story, from his birth in Baden-Württemberg to his years in Ticino. Original manuscripts, letters, photographs, and first editions can be viewed. A separate room deals with Hesse’s painting, as he was not only a writer but also a talented watercolorist. The Montagnola landscapes frequently appeared in his watercolors.

The museum’s garden is beautifully maintained and evokes the Mediterranean environment that Hesse loved so much. The building’s atmosphere has been preserved, so visitors can truly get a glimpse into the writer’s daily life.

All information can be found here!

Lugano weather: when is the best time to visit?

Lugano has a Mediterranean-like, mild climate, making it Switzerland’s warmest region. The year is divided into four distinct seasons, but even the winter months are relatively mild compared to the Swiss average. The city’s protected geographical location and proximity to the lake ensure balanced weather throughout the year.

Spring (March-May):

The season begins with gradual warming; March can still be cool, but by April, daytime temperatures are around 15-18°C. The awakening of nature offers a beautiful sight, especially in parks and botanical gardens, where the blooming of rhododendrons and azaleas is stunning. Rain is still frequent, but the number of sunny hours gradually increases.

Summer (June-August):

The warmest period, when temperatures regularly reach 25-30°C. In July and August, pleasant 18-20°C in the evenings is typical. This season is ideal for lakeside bathing, boating, and outdoor programs. Occasionally, heavy summer showers and thunderstorms may occur, but they usually pass quickly. With many hours of sunshine and pleasant evenings, this is the city’s liveliest season.

Autumn (September-November):

September is still summer-like warm, a perfect time for hiking and sightseeing with fewer tourists. By October, it becomes cooler, with temperatures between 12-18°C typical. The autumn colors are particularly beautiful in the surrounding mountains. In November, the approach of winter is noticeable, with more frequent rain.

Winter (December-February):

The winter months are mild; the temperature rarely drops below freezing in the city. The average daytime temperature is around 5-10°C. Snowfall is rare in the city, although it is common in the surrounding mountains. Winter is the wettest season, but the Christmas period creates a special atmosphere with festive lighting and markets.

Best time to travel Lugano:

The ideal travel period is from late April to early October, when the weather is best and all attractions and services are available. May and June are particularly recommended, when nature is blooming, the weather is pleasant (20-25°C), and it is not yet as crowded as in July-August. September and early October are also excellent choices, when the temperature is still pleasant (18-24°C). The summer peak season (July-August) is ideal for those seeking lakeside life, swimming, and lively cultural programs, although higher prices and larger crowds can be expected during this time.

As one of Switzerland’s most important cities, Lausanne has numerous excellent museums. Here are the best ones!

Best museums in Lausanne

Olympic Museum (Musée Olympique)

One of the world’s most comprehensive sports museums opened in its new form in 2013 on the shores of Lake Geneva, in a stunning building that stands as an architectural masterpiece in its own right. The museum presents the history of the Olympic ideal across three floors, from the ancient Greek games to the modern Olympics, with the help of more than 10,000 artifacts.

In the interactive exhibition spaces, visitors can try out numerous sports on simulators, view Olympic medals, torches and sports equipment, and gain insight into the lives of Olympic athletes. The museum’s pride is its audiovisual archive, which preserves more than 43,000 hours of footage from the history of the Games.

The complex also includes an impressive sculpture park where various artists’ Olympic-themed works can be seen. Thanks to its lakeside location, there are unparalleled views of the French Alps, while the museum’s café and restaurant offer a Mediterranean-style terrace. The building also received environmental certification for its sustainable architectural solutions.

All information can be found here!

MUDAC (Musée de Design et d’Arts Appliqués Contemporains)

The Museum of Contemporary Design and Applied Arts is housed in a 17th-century building, which previously operated under the name Maison Gaudard.

The museum opened its doors in 1995 and has since become one of Switzerland’s most significant design museums, showcasing a wide spectrum of contemporary art, design, graphics and textiles. In addition to the permanent collection, several temporary exhibitions are organized annually, focusing on 20th-21st century design, fashion art, typography and industrial design.

Its special feature is that it not only displays objects but also the creative process, giving visitors insight into designers’ working methods. Despite its smaller size, the museum has gained international recognition by exhibiting the works of renowned designers such as Jean Prouvé and Charlotte Perriand.

All information can be found here!

Collection de l’Art Brut

One of the world’s most significant outsider art collections has been operating since 1976 in an 18th-century castle, the former Château de Beaulieu building.

The museum was founded by French painter Jean Dubuffet, who was a committed advocate of art created not by academic artists, but by self-taught creators, people suffering from mental illness, or those living on the margins of society.

The collection contains more than 60,000 works of art from approximately 1,000 artists: paintings, sculptures, textile works and installations. The exhibited works often speak with shocking intensity and honesty about the inner world and human experience that doesn’t fit into conventional artistic directions. The museum also regularly organizes temporary exhibitions that introduce new artists or arrange thematic displays.

All information can be found here!

Hermitage Foundation (Fondation de l’Hermitage)

A villa from the 1850s houses this art foundation, which has welcomed audiences with outstanding temporary exhibitions since 1984. The building was once the home of banker Charles-Juste Bugnion, who was renowned as a great art patron, and after his death, his property was transferred for artistic purposes.

The foundation organizes 3-4 major exhibitions annually, focusing on 19th-20th century art: works by Monet, Magritte, Cézanne and Picasso have been displayed here. In terms of exhibition quality and curation, the foundation has earned international fame.

The six-hectare English park surrounding the building is a true oasis above the city: tree-lined paths, grassy areas and beautiful views of Lake Geneva and the Alps. The tea room operating on the villa’s terrace is an excellent place for relaxation combined with a cultural experience. From spring to autumn, the park also functions as a sculpture park where contemporary artists’ works can be seen.

All information can be found here!

Vidy Roman Museum (Musée romain de Lausanne-Vidy)

The archaeological museum on the shores of Lake Geneva, at the site of the ruins of the Roman settlement Lousonna, provides insight into everyday life during the Roman era. The settlement was established around 15 AD and was located along an important trade route that connected Italy with the Rhine region.

The museum building was built directly over the excavated ruins: beneath the glass floor, the remains of the Roman vicus (small town) are visible, including the foundations of streets, houses and public buildings. The exhibition displays mosaics, bronze objects, ceramic vessels, coins and everyday items, all discovered on site.

A special attraction is the visual reconstruction in the museum’s basement, which shows what the interior of a Roman house might have looked like with furniture, tools and decorations. The museum also contains interactive elements: visitors can try Roman games or learn about the writing systems of the era. The outdoor part of the ruins site is freely accessible, and informative signs help with orientation.

All information can be found here!

Museum of Archaeology and History (MCAH)

The institution located in the heart of the Palais de Rumine presents the history of the Lake Geneva region from the Neolithic to the present day, and even into the future.

The free-to-visit permanent exhibition begins with a full-scale lakeside excavation and Neolithic cemetery visible through a glass floor, then continues with the year 3081, followed by 1803, the date of Vaud canton’s independence.

The museum’s history dates back to 1818, when the first collection of the cantonal museum was created. The institution, named Museum of Antiquities in 1852, Archaeological Museum in 1877, and then Historical Museum in 1908, has been housed in the Palais de Rumine building since 1908. The year 1955 was a turning point when, under the leadership of curator Anne-Lise Reinbold, the museum adopted its current name. The building is located in the central Place de la Riponne.

The museum’s collection numbers more than 100,000 objects covering every historical period from prehistory to modern times. The exhibition includes ceramics, baskets and wooden objects from the Neolithic period, discovered on the region’s lakeshores. The museum offers three permanent exhibition rooms: one dedicated to prehistory, one to history, and one to the coin and medal collection. Special pieces include the famous princely chariot burial from Payerne from the early Iron Age, as well as decorations from Saint-Sulpice.

All information can be found here!

Zoological Museum

The zoological collection on the fifth floor of the neo-Renaissance Palais de Rumine building displays animals from all over the world.

The museum’s specialty is the world’s largest stuffed white shark, which is 5.89 meters long and the centerpiece of the spectacular exhibition. Visitors can freely explore the wonders of the animal world displayed in old-fashioned vitrines, with free admission.

The institution’s roots go back to 1818, when the cantonal museum was created, initially containing only 678 shells, 377 fossils, 239 foreign and domestic birds, a small Surinamese snake collection, and a few quadrupeds preserved in alcohol. In 1833, with the acquisition of Daniel-Alexandre Chavannes’ collection, the zoological collections expanded significantly. They moved to the newly built Palais de Rumine building in 1909.

The museum’s collection now numbers approximately 50,000 vertebrates and nearly 2 million invertebrates. The main gallery regularly displays the major groups of vertebrates, while the comparative anatomy room features skeletons and specimens preserved in glass vessels with impressive detail.

The entomological collections, especially the ants, represent the museum’s highlight – the institution has operated as a recognized ant research center since 1982. Special collections include Vladimir Nabokov’s butterfly collection, as well as James Rochat’s insect collection of 100,000 specimens.

All information can be found here!

Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts (MCBA)

The institution, which has been present on the Swiss art scene since 1841, has been located in the heart of the Plateforme 10 arts district since 2019. The museum presents numerous temporary exhibitions throughout the year while drawing on its rich collection of more than 10,000 works of art, spanning from the late 18th century to the present day.

It was created in 1841 through private initiative from funds donated by artist Marc-Louis Arlaud, who became the institution’s first curator. In October 2019, the museum moved to the new Plateforme 10 facility. The building’s architecture is the work of Barcelona’s Estudio Barozzi Veiga design studio, whose monumental brick form evokes the site’s past, the history of the locomotive depot.

The museum’s reputation is due to five magnificent collections: works by Abraham-Louis-Rodolphe Ducros, Charles Gleyre, Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, Félix Vallotton and Louis Soutter. The collection’s main emphasis spans from the 18th century to post-impressionism, with fine examples of Cubism and Vaud abstract art.

The modern and contemporary art collections include works by Marcel Broodthaers, Rolf Iseli, Tadeusz Kantor, Charles Rollier, Daniel Spoerri and Maria Elena Vieira da Silva. Between 1990-2010, the museum focused on acquiring works by significant international artists.

Admission is free on the first Saturday of every month.

All information can be found here!

Geological Museum

The collection located on the third floor of the Palais de Rumine is a true history book, full of treasures and testimony to an often mysterious past. The free-to-visit permanent exhibition offers fossils, crystals and an explanation of the formation of the Alps for the general public.

The museum was created in 1818 and moved into the Palais de Rumine in 1906. Initially, the institution mainly preserved and displayed about a thousand minerals donated by Tsar Alexander I to Frédéric-César de La Harpe, before diversifying over time. In 1874, thanks to Eugène Renevier’s efforts, the museum gained its independence and opened to the general public from 1878.

Among its greatest attractions is „The Welcome Nugget”, a replica of the largest gold nugget ever found, weighing 57.3 kilos, as well as one of Europe’s most complete mammoth skeletons, discovered in the Praz-Rodet gravel pit near Brassus. The museum’s collection manages approximately one million rock, fossil and mineral samples.

The mineralogical exhibition is continuously enriched and displays magnificent crystals from all over the world, including a unique collection of polished stones from the Swiss Alps, including large pink fluorites. The museum has the most significant collection of fluorescent minerals in the country. Additional highlights include remarkable examples of ichthyosaurs, giant palms and ammonites.

Lausanne exudes a special atmosphere: the narrow streets and stepped alleyways of the medieval old town evoke bygone eras, while the modern city district and university environment lend a vibrant, youthful spirit to the settlement.

Lausanne is the cultural capital of French-speaking Switzerland, a dynamic city built on three hills along the shores of Lake Geneva. It is the country’s fourth-largest city after Basel, Geneva, and Zurich. In the 20th century, it became one of the centers of international sports, as it is home to the International Olympic Committee, the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and approximately 55 international sports federations.

Lausanne attractions

Lausanne Cathedral

The most significant achievement of Swiss Gothic architecture was built in the 12th-13th centuries and has become the symbol of Lausanne over the centuries. The cathedral, consecrated in 1275 in the presence of Emperor Rudolf of Habsburg, features a special rose window on its facade depicting the months of the year and the seasons in allegorical form.

Inside the church, visitors are greeted by stunning stained glass windows, the most famous of which is the 13th-century rose window with its unique cosmological representations. A distinctive feature of the structure is the richly carved tympanum of the south portal, depicting the Last Judgment with 260 figures.

It’s worth climbing the 75-meter bell tower, not only for the 360-degree panorama but also because Switzerland’s last night watchman lives here, calling out the hour toward the city’s four cardinal directions every hour between 10 PM and 2 AM. This tradition has been unbroken since 1405 and is part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage.

The tower also functions as a lookout point

Château St-Maire

One of the most important historic buildings in Lausanne’s old town, built at the end of the 14th century as a fortified episcopal residence.

The thick stone walls, narrow windows, and massive towers still exude a medieval atmosphere, clearly reflecting its original defensive function. The castle later took on an administrative role and today serves as the seat of the Vaud canton government.

Although its interior spaces are not freely accessible to visitors, it is an important sight due to its exterior appearance and location. Together with the nearby cathedral, it is a defining element of the city’s historic character.

Ouchy Harbor and Lakeside Promenade

The Ouchy district on the shores of Lake Geneva is one of the city’s most popular meeting places, from where regular ferry services depart for Évian and French towns on the opposite shore of the lake.

The several-kilometer lakeside promenade takes us past palm trees and Mediterranean vegetation, offering an unusual sight at the foot of the Alps. Along the promenade, numerous restaurants, cafés, and ice cream shops await visitors.

The Château d’Ouchy, a neo-Romanesque castle built on the ruins of a 12th-century fortress, now operates as a hotel but has historical significance: the Treaty of Lausanne was signed here in 1923. In summer, the beach and swimming pools make the area special, while in winter it’s the Christmas market.

The castle is now a hotel

Lake Sauvabelin and Observation Tower (Lac de Sauvabelin)

The wooden observation tower rising 30 meters above the city, built in 2003, is a unique architectural creation accessible via 302 steps. The structure is made from 1,140 cubic meters of Swiss pine, and its spiral form offers a special sight both from the outside and inside.

From the top of the tower, a 360-degree panorama unfolds: on clear days, not only the entire city of Lausanne, Lake Geneva, and the French Alps are visible, but also Mont Blanc. The path leading to the observation point runs around a picturesque 3.8-hectare forest lake, which is an excellent spot for picnicking or an easy walk.

The zoo in Sauvabelin forest park is unique in that it’s not a conventional zoo: European wild animals – deer, wild boars, goats – can be freely observed in their natural environment. The wooden restaurant on the grounds has a terrace that is a popular destination for local families who like to take trips here on weekends to escape the urban hustle. Several hiking trails cross the area, leading into the surrounding forests.

The view of the Alps from the top is magnificent

Place de la Palud and Old Town

This medieval square is the heart of the old town, where the Fountain of Justice (Fontaine de la Justice), built in 1505, stands opposite the town hall. Among the figures of the sculpture group, the most notable is the enthroned Justitia, at whose feet kneel a pope, a sultan, an emperor, and a Bernese bailiff, symbolizing that the law stands above everyone.

Nearby is the 17th-century town hall, on whose facade a mechanical clock operates: at every hour, moving figures appear depicting important moments in Lausanne’s history. On Tuesday and Saturday mornings, there is also a market in the square where local products and handicrafts are available.

The narrow medieval streets, steep staircases, and covered passageways (escaliers du Marché) of the old town create a unique atmosphere. The area is filled with small boutiques, antique bookshops, galleries, and traditional restaurants. The Escaliers du Marché, the main stairway, connects the lower and upper town with 163 steps and remains the busiest pedestrian passage in the historic center today.

Flon District

The former district of warehouses and industrial buildings has been transformed into Lausanne’s cultural and entertainment epicenter since the 1990s. During brownfield rehabilitation, the old buildings were creatively repurposed: today design shops, art galleries, dance studios, concert halls, and trendy restaurants line the area.

At the heart of the district is Les Arches, an imposing railway viaduct under which there is much nightlife: a multitude of clubs, bars, and concert venues can be found here. Flon is one of Switzerland’s most famous underground music scenes, where international artists perform on a weekly basis.

Street art works and modern installations visible on building facades and walls add further color to the district. MAD (Musée des Arts Décoratifs) offers eclectic design exhibitions, while Cinémathèque shows classic films in an Art Deco cinema. The district is easily walkable, and the M2 metro line also passes through it.

Place Saint-François

This square, forming the business and commercial heart of the city, was developed on the site of a Franciscan monastery built in the 1300s, from which it takes its name. Today, the square’s only medieval reminder is the church built in the 13th century, whose tower originally served as the monastery’s bell tower but later continued to function as a Protestant church.

The square also serves as Lausanne’s main bus station, from where countless local and regional services depart. Among the buildings surrounding the square are impressive palaces and banks, masterpieces of 19th-20th century architecture. The M2 metro, one of Europe’s shortest underground lines, also has a station beneath the square.

The surrounding area forms Lausanne’s busiest shopping district: Rue de Bourg and neighboring streets await visitors with luxury shops, Swiss watches, and chocolate specialties. At Christmas, the square hosts a Christmas market, while in summer open-air concerts and events are held here. From the roof terrace of the nearby Globus department store, there is a beautiful panoramic view of the old town.

Esplanade de Montbenon

This expansive terrace is an excellent location for taking panoramic photos: from here opens one of the best views of Lake Geneva, the French Alps, and the Lavaux vineyards. The park-like space, created in the 1880s, was once home to a casino and palace but today functions as a cultural center and popular meeting place.

The central building of the area is the Casino de Montbenon, which is no longer a casino but a congress center and concert hall. On the square in front of the building, summer concerts, film screenings, and various city events are held, which are freely accessible.

On the eastern part of the terrace is the building of the Cinémathèque suisse, which is Switzerland’s national film archive and an arthouse cinema in one. The institution has more than 70,000 films and organizes regular screenings and retrospectives. Montbenon park is also popular among families due to its playgrounds and shady trees.

Le Flon Market (Marché du Flon)

The covered market operating in the Flon district’s modern business center opened in 2006 and has since become the city’s gastronomic hub.

The industrial-style space of the former warehouse building now houses more than twenty stalls where local producers, bakers, butchers, cheese sellers, and greengrocers offer their wares. Wine fairs and gastronomic events are also regular around the market, showcasing the culinary treasures of Vaud canton.

But it doesn’t just function as a traditional market: several restaurants, cafés, and street food stands can also be found here where freshly prepared food can be consumed. The venue is popular at lunchtime among office workers, while on weekends locals visit with their families.

Palais de Rumine

This monumental neo-Renaissance style building was built in 1904 and dominates the northern side of Place de la Riponne.

Gabriel de Rumine, a Russian-born patron, left his fortune to Lausanne in his will with the condition that it be used for community and cultural purposes – thus this palace was born, housing five museums. The six allegorical statues visible on the building’s facade symbolize branches of science: geography, history, archaeology, zoology, geology, and fine arts.

On the building’s ground floor is the Cantonal and University Library, which preserves Vaud canton’s most important scientific collection. The upstairs rooms house the Zoological Museum, Geological Museum, Archaeological and Historical Museum, and the Numismatic Cabinet.

The Zoological Museum has an outstanding collection: more than 150,000 specimens, the most impressive of which is a 14-meter-long shark and dioramas depicting Alpine fauna. The Geological Museum preserves thousands of minerals, fossils, and meteorites, including an 80-kilogram quartz crystal.

Lavaux Vineyards

Although administratively not part of Lausanne, the World Heritage vineyard terraces stretching along the shores of Lake Geneva in the city’s immediate vicinity offer a wonderful sight and experience.

The vineyards extending over 800 hectares were created thanks to the work of Cistercian monasteries founded in the 11th century, and the terraces bordered by stone walls built on steep slopes can still be seen in their original form today.

The region’s specialty is the „three suns” effect: the grapes simultaneously receive direct sunlight, light reflected from the lake’s surface, and warmth radiating from the stone walls. This microclimate enables the cultivation of excellent quality white wines, primarily the Chasselas grape variety. Lavaux is divided into six wine regions, the most famous of which are Dézaley and Calamin.

Numerous hiking trails are found in the region that guide visitors through the terraces: the most popular is the section between St-Saphorin and Lutry. Along the route, wineries, small villages, and panoramic viewpoints await interested visitors. The area is easily accessible from Lausanne by train or boat, with the Cully or Grandvaux stops being particularly ideal as starting points. In autumn, harvest festivals and wine celebrations add color to the offerings.

Lausanne weather: when is the best time to visit?

Spring (March–May):

March still brings cool and variable weather, but by April real spring arrives: temperatures rise to between 12-18°C, and trees blossom in parks and gardens. In May, pleasant temperatures around 20°C can be expected, although rain may occasionally occur. This period is ideal for exploring the city, as there are no large crowds yet and nature is splendid in beautiful colors. Walking around Lake Sauvabelin and in the Lavaux vineyards is particularly enjoyable.

Summer (June–August):

The summer months are warm and sunny, with temperatures generally ranging between 25-28°C, though in July-August they can reach 30°C. The proximity of Lake Geneva has a pleasant cooling effect, and the lakeside beaches and bathing areas are excellent for use. In summer, the city’s cultural life also picks up: open-air concerts, festivals, and events await visitors. The number of rainy days is relatively low, although heavy thunderstorms can occasionally occur in August.

Autumn (September–November):

September still offers pleasant temperatures around 20-22°C and is a great time to visit the wine regions, as the harvest takes place at this time. In October, the weather turns cooler (12-16°C), but autumn foliage displays the surrounding forests and parks in wonderful colors. By November, foggy, gray weather sets in, which is relatively common around the lakes during this period. Autumn is ideal for those who prefer a quieter, less touristy atmosphere.

Winter (December–February):

Winter in Lausanne is relatively mild, with temperatures rarely falling below -5°C, generally ranging between 0-5°C. Snowfall occurs but persistent snow cover is not typical in the city – though the nearby Alps’ excellent ski areas are only 30-60 minutes away. December awaits visitors with magical Christmas markets and festive decorations. January-February are the wettest months, with drizzling rain and foggy days being common.

Best time to travel Lausanne:

The best time to visit Lausanne is from late May to late September, when pleasant, warm weather can be expected and the city’s cultural life is most vibrant. May and June are ideal choices for those who want to avoid summer crowds but still explore in sunny, pleasant weather. July-August is perfect for lakeside beach activities and outdoor programs, although tourist traffic is highest then. September is particularly recommended: temperatures are still pleasant (18-22°C), harvest festivals begin in the Lavaux vineyards, and lively cultural programs await interested visitors in the city as well.

Lucerne, with its historic old town’s narrow streets, medieval bridges, and unique atmosphere, is one of Switzerland’s most beautiful cities.

The city’s atmosphere is a unique blend of Swiss traditions and modern tourist services. The carefully preserved architectural heritage and the meeting of natural beauty make Lucerne one of the most beautiful gems at the gateway to the Alps. Its cultural economy is also significant: numerous museums, concert halls, and festivals make the city attractive to millions of visitors annually.

Lucerne attractions

Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee)

The Vierwaldstättersee is one of Switzerland’s most beautiful and significant lakes. The 114 square kilometer water surface spans across four cantons and, due to its special shape, is one of the country’s most picturesque natural formations.

Lucerne’s historic center is located on the lake shore, from where breathtaking panoramas open up to the surrounding Alpine peaks. The water is crystal clear and pleasantly warm in summer, making it ideal for both swimming and water sports.

The lake’s specialty is the network of steamboat services that connect the lakeside settlements. Historic steamers operating since the 1800s provide romantic travel experiences while allowing us to explore every corner of the lake. With the Wilhelm Tell Express, we can even reach the surrounding mountain ranges.

The lake was named after the town

Old Town

One of Switzerland’s best-preserved medieval city centers, which has been shaped into its current form since the 13th century. The narrow cobblestone alleys and colorful facades of burgher houses radiate an authentic medieval atmosphere.

Among the buildings grouped around Weinmarkt square, there are numerous historically significant houses whose fresco-decorated facades refer to the city’s rich merchant past. Unter der Egg street and Kramenplatz are particularly spectacular sections of the old town.

The old town’s specialty is that it successfully combines historical traditions with modern urban life. A multitude of cafés, restaurants, and boutiques can be found in the ground-floor spaces, while the upper floors of the buildings have retained their original functions.

Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke)

One of the most famous symbols of Lucerne and all of Switzerland, built in 1333 over the Reuss River. This is Europe’s oldest covered wooden bridge, originally 270 meters long, now 204 meters long.

Under the bridge’s roof structure, there are 111 triangular paintings depicting significant events in Lucerne’s and Switzerland’s history. These works from the first half of the 17th century are by Hans Heinrich Wägmann and are valuable pieces of Swiss painting history.

The octagonal Water Tower (Wasserturm) standing in the middle of the bridge was built in the 13th century and was originally part of the city’s fortification system. Today it appears in Lucerne’s official coat of arms and is one of the city’s most photographed motifs.

In 1993, a tragic fire destroyed most of the bridge, but careful reconstruction managed to restore it to its original state. During the restoration, original materials and techniques were used, so the bridge retained its historical authenticity.

Lucerne’s iconic bridge

Town Hall

The Rathaus was built between 1602-1606 in Renaissance style and is still the center of the city’s administration today. The building’s facade facing Kornmarkt square is particularly imposing, with its richly decorated balconies and coats of arms.

The building’s most characteristic element is the ground-floor arcade, which shows Italian influences and under which markets were formerly held. In the town hall’s inner courtyard is the famous clock, which chimes every hour and is an important timekeeping point for locals.

The town hall’s historical significance lies in the fact that Lucerne’s council sat here for several centuries, and decisions determining the city’s fate were made here. It still performs active administrative functions today, but tourists can visit certain parts of it.

Water Tower

One of Lucerne’s oldest and most characteristic buildings, built around 1300 in the middle of the Reuss River. The 43-meter-high, octagonal tower was originally part of the city’s defense system.

During its history, the tower served many functions: it served as a prison, treasury, archive, and even as a torture chamber. It played a central role in medieval urban life and was a symbol of the city’s power.

It is one of the city’s most famous symbols and, together with the Chapel Bridge, appears in the city’s coat of arms. Although its interior is not accessible to visitors, its external appearance and historical significance make it a mandatory photography point for every tourist. Its specialty is that it stands in the middle of water, providing a special sight from every angle.

It had several functions in the past

St. Leodegar Church (Hofkirche)

One of Lucerne’s most important religious and historical monuments, a defining element of the lakeside landscape.

The church is the city’s most famous temple, built in the 17th century on the ruins of a former Benedictine monastery. Although part of the original church – especially the two characteristic Gothic towers – remained from the Middle Ages, today’s building mainly represents the early Baroque style, which is a rarity in Switzerland.

The church’s richly decorated interior hides impressive altars, intricate wood carvings, and a valuable organ. It is not only a venue for religious events but also frequently hosts classical music concerts.

Stands out with its tower

Musegg Wall

The remaining part of Lucerne’s medieval city wall, built in the 14th century to defend the northern part of the city. The approximately 870-meter-long wall with nine towers is still visible today and is one of Switzerland’s best-preserved medieval fortifications.

Of the nine towers, three – the Schirmer, Zyt, and Männli towers – can be visited from the inside. The Zyt tower is particularly interesting, as it houses Lucerne’s oldest clock from 1535, which still works today and, as a unique privilege, strikes one minute earlier than the city’s other clocks.

The wall’s walkway offers beautiful views of the old town, the lake, and the surrounding mountains. Walking along the wall, we can gain insight into medieval city defense techniques and contemporary architectural solutions.

It is not only historically significant but also an active part of the cityscape today. It is a favorite walking place for locals and a mandatory program point for tourists, especially for those interested in medieval history.

Spreuer Bridge (Spreuerbrücke)

The bridge was built in 1408 over the Reuss River and is Lucerne’s second oldest covered wooden bridge. The 80-meter-long bridge’s name comes from the German word „Spreu”, meaning chaff, because mills were allowed to discharge chaff into the river here.

The bridge’s main attraction is the 67 paintings under the roof structure, which are works by Kaspar Meglinger from the 17th century. These pictures depict the Dance of Death (Totentanz) and are outstanding examples of medieval moralizing art.

The paintings’ specialty is that death affects all social classes equally – king and beggar, young and old all appear in the compositions. This theme was popular in the Middle Ages and reminded people of life’s transience.

Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal)

The monument is one of the world’s most moving sculptures.

The 10-meter-long and 6-meter-high relief was created in memory of the Swiss Guards who fell during the French Revolution. It was designed by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and carved by Lucas Ahorn in 1821 into the side of a natural rock face.

The sculpture depicts a dying lion with a broken spear piercing its body, while protecting a shield decorated with French lilies with its paw. The lion’s head is contorted with pain, its eyes tearful. Mark Twain called the monument „the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world”.

The monument commemorates the events of August 10, 1792, when 786 of the Swiss Guard defending King Louis XVI at the Tuileries Palace lost their lives. Swiss mercenaries were known throughout Europe for their reputation for loyalty and bravery.

Society of Jesus Church

Built in the 17th century on the banks of the Reuss River, near the Reussbrücke, commissioned by the Jesuit order according to architect Heinrich Mayer’s plans. It is Switzerland’s first major Baroque church.

The church’s facade is impressive Baroque style with two towers that are defining elements of Lucerne’s landscape. The interior is richly decorated with stuccoes and frescoes, which are works by Francesco Antonio Giorgioli and Pietro Antonio Torri from the 18th century.

Its specialty is the main altar, which is partly marble, partly painted wood, creating an optical illusion. The sanctuary’s dome fresco depicts the life of Saint Francis Xavier, who was one of the most famous saints of the Jesuits.

Mount Pilatus

The 2,132-meter-high peak is located in the immediate vicinity of Lucerne and is one of the city’s main natural attractions. The mountain’s name allegedly comes from Pontius Pilate, who supposedly found his final resting place here according to legends.

Getting up the mountain is an experience in itself: the world’s steepest cogwheel railway, the Pilatusbahn, has been carrying visitors up since 1889. The 4.6-kilometer track ascends with a 48% gradient, which is a world record in its category.

From the summit, an unparalleled panorama opens up to the Alps, Lake Lucerne, and several Alpine peaks. On clear days, you can see the Jungfrau, Eiger, and Mönch, which are the most famous peaks of the Bernese Alps.

Its tourist infrastructure is excellent: restaurants, hotels, and numerous hiking trails are available to visitors. In winter, ski slopes operate, while in summer, hiking opportunities await adventure seekers.

Bourbaki Panorama

Located in Lucerne’s city center, in a circular building specially built for this purpose, this wonderful circular painting can be found.

The 112-meter-long and 10-meter-high, 360-degree painting immortalizes one of history’s dramatic episodes: the escape and Swiss internment of a French army of more than 87,000 during the 1871 Franco-Prussian War.

The painting was created by Edouard Castres, who himself participated in the events. The work is not only an artistic masterpiece but also carries a powerful humanitarian message.

All information can be found here!

Richard Wagner Museum

The museum is located in the former residence of the famous German composer, the villa called Tribschen, where Wagner lived with his family from 1866-1872. This was one of Wagner’s most productive periods, where he composed the Siegfried Idyll and The Mastersingers of Nuremberg.

The museum’s collection contains Wagner’s personal belongings, manuscripts, correspondence, and period instruments. Particularly valuable are those documents relating to the composer’s Swiss years, which provide insight into his creative processes.

The villa itself is also historically significant: Wagner’s son Siegfried was born here, in whose honor he composed the famous Siegfried Idyll. The house’s original furnishings have partly remained, so visitors can get a glimpse into 19th-century bourgeois lifestyle.

The museum’s specialty is that it regularly organizes concerts featuring Wagner’s works. The villa’s park offers beautiful views of Lake Lucerne and Mount Pilatus, which could have provided inspiration for Wagner’s music as well.

All information can be found here!

Art Museum (Kunstmuseum Luzern)

Opened in 1932, it preserves Central Switzerland’s most significant fine arts collection. The museum operates at two locations: in the historic building in the city center and in the modern KKL (Kultur- und Kongresszentrum Luzern) building.

The collection focuses on 19th-20th century Swiss and international art. The museum is particularly rich in Swiss Impressionist and Expressionist works, as well as contemporary installations. Works by Ferdinand Hodler, Félix Vallotton, and other significant Swiss artists represent national traditions.

The museum’s program is dynamic and varied: continuously changing exhibitions showcase contemporary art, and thematic displays are prepared on classical periods as well. The institution is an active participant in international artistic life.

The modern exhibition spaces in the KKL building were designed according to architect Jean Nouvel’s plans and provide an ideal environment for presenting contemporary art. The building itself is also an architectural attraction that harmoniously fits into the lakeside.

All information can be found here!

Sammlung Rosengart

One of Lucerne’s most prestigious private collections, showcasing artifacts collected by the Rosengart family over several generations. The collection focuses on masters of classical modernism and impressionism.

The museum’s main treasures are Pablo Picasso’s works: more than 200 drawings, graphics, and paintings from the artist’s various creative periods can be found here. Among these are significant pieces from the 1950s and 1960s, when Picasso was experiencing his best period.

An impressive collection of Paul Klee’s works is also visible: approximately 125 works represent the diverse oeuvre of the Swiss-born artist. Besides Klee and Picasso, works by Cézanne, Monet, Renoir, and Matisse can also be found in the collection.

The Sammlung Rosengart’s specialty is its personal tone: the exhibition’s atmosphere is more reminiscent of a private residence than a traditional museum. Angela Rosengart, the collection’s last guardian, personally knew Picasso, and this connection permeates the entire exhibition.

All information can be found here!

Swiss Museum of Transport (Verkehrshaus der Schweiz)

One of Europe’s largest and most comprehensive transport-themed museums opened in 1959 and has been continuously expanding and modernizing since then.

The museum’s collection covers all transport sectors: rail, road, shipping, aviation, and space exploration are all represented. The Swiss railway history collection is particularly rich, showcasing world-famous Swiss trains and the development of mountain railways.

The institution’s interactive character makes the visitor experience special. Simulators, experimental stations, and practical demonstrations make it possible for visitors to gain their own experiences in the world of transport. The planetarium and IMAX cinema offer additional exciting programs.

The Hans Erni Museum is also located on the museum grounds, showcasing the life’s work of the famous Swiss painter and graphic artist. The entire complex is family-friendly and offers experience-rich programs especially for children, while adults can also learn much about the history and future of transport.

All information can be found here!

Lucerne weather: when is the best time to travel?

Lucerne’s climate is temperate continental, influenced by both the Alpine environment and the presence of Lake Lucerne. Due to the city’s relatively protected geographical location, it has less extreme weather conditions than the higher Alpine regions.

Spring (March-May):

Spring gradually warms up, with temperatures around 8-12°C at the end of March. In April, daytime temperatures of around 15-18°C can be expected, and in May, it can even rise above 20°C. This period comes with beautiful blooming, but occasional showers should be expected.

Summer (June-August):

The weather is most pleasant during the summer months, with average temperatures between 20-25°C. In July and August, temperatures can even rise above 30°C. The lake water is 20-22°C, providing ideal bathing conditions. Afternoon thunderstorms are more frequent in summer.

Autumn (September-November):

Autumn is a long and pleasant period, with temperatures still around 18-22°C in September. In October 12-16°C, and in November 5-8°C are typical. This period is ideal for hiking and sightseeing, but the number of rainy days increases.

Winter (December-February):

During winter months, temperatures around 0-5°C are characteristic. Snowfall is not everyday, but it occurs, especially in January and February. The lake doesn’t freeze, but the surrounding mountains turn snow-white, providing a beautiful winter panorama.

Best time to travel:

The most ideal time to visit Lucerne is between May and September. During this period, the weather is most pleasant, with temperatures around 18-25°C, and most tourist attractions operate fully. The ascent to Mount Pilatus is also certainly possible, and the lake’s pleasant temperature allows for water sports as well.

As Switzerland’s largest city, Zurich is an important center. The city is a very atmospheric location between the picturesque Lake Zurich and the Alpine mountains.

It is located in the northern part of the country, on the shores of the elongated Lake Zurich. It lies at only 400 meters above sea level, but the high peaks of the Alps are part of the panorama.

Grossmünster

The Romanesque Protestant church is one of Zurich’s four major churches and an iconic building of the city.

Built in the 12th century, the church was one of the main sites of the Swiss-German Reformation. Because of this, its interior is particularly simple. The two towers were first erected at the end of the 15th century, then after a fire, the current neo-Gothic towers were completed in 1787.

Many people didn’t like the church – Richard Wagner, for example, mocked its appearance by calling it two pepper shakers. Despite this, it remains Zurich’s most famous building.

Fraumünster

One of the four main churches mentioned above, its pointed green spire stands out in Zurich’s skyline. It is located „opposite” the Grossmünster, on the other side of the Limmat River.

The monastery church was built in 853 on the remains of an abbey. The current church was built in the 1100s and was later renovated several times.

Its most famous attraction is the five large stained glass windows designed by artist Marc Chagall and installed in 1970. Each of the 5 windows has a dominant color and depicts a biblical story.

Its mountainous green tower can be seen from afar

St. Peter

The church located in the old town now looks back on a thousand-year history, making it one of Zurich’s most important historical buildings.

Before the Reformation, St. Peter was the city’s only parish church, while the others were part of monasteries. The current building was consecrated in 1706, built as the first church under Protestant rule.

What immediately catches the eye about the church is the clock. Not without reason, as this is Europe’s largest church clock face (8.7 meters in diameter).

Europe’s largest watchmaker

Lindenhof

The Lindenhof in Zurich’s old town is the historical site of the Roman fort and later the Carolingian Kaiserpfalz in Switzerland. It lies on Lindenhof Hill, on the left bank of the Limmat.

It remained a venue for civil assemblies until modern times. As an important location, in 1798 the citizens of Zurich took an oath here to the constitution of the Helvetic Republic.

Being on a hill, its elevated position makes it a popular place among tourists. Especially looking eastward, a wonderful view unfolds before us.

Bern boasts one of Europe’s most beautiful medieval city centers, where history and modern life blend harmoniously.

Switzerland’s de facto capital is the fourth most populous city after Zurich, Geneva, and Basel. The UNESCO World Heritage city is situated in a bend of the Aare River and still preserves its medieval character today. Its name is connected to the bear, which has also become Bern’s heraldic animal, and this symbolic connection can still be found in many places today.

Old Town (Altstadt)

Bern’s historic old town is one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval city centers and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1983.

The heart of the old town consists of long, cobblestone streets lined on both sides by arched arcades. Under the 6-kilometer-long arcade system, numerous boutiques, cafés, and restaurants create a pleasant atmosphere for visitors.

Most of the colorful-fronted buildings date from the 15th-18th centuries and are carefully restored to preserve their original beauty. The ornately carved fountains found on the streets further enhance the medieval atmosphere. Due to the old town’s meticulously crafted details and harmonious architectural unity, Bern rightfully considers itself one of Europe’s most romantic capitals.

Clock Tower (Zytglogge)

One of Bern’s most iconic symbols and the medieval clock tower standing in the heart of the city, which has been keeping time for more than 800 years.

The tower, originally built between 1218-1220, served as the city’s western gate, then later functioned as a prison and clock tower. Its current stunning astronomical clock was made in 1530 and still operates with its original mechanism. The clock not only shows the time but also indicates the months, days, moon phases, and zodiac signs, making it a true technical masterpiece.

A few minutes before each hour, a special performance begins: a rooster crows, then a jester strikes the bell while bears march around the tower. This magical spectacle always attracts crowds and has become one of Bern’s most beloved attractions.

During guided tours inside the tower, visitors can learn about the complex mechanism of the clockwork and ascend to the viewing terrace, from where a beautiful panorama of the old town unfolds.

A symbol of Bern

Bern Cathedral

Switzerland’s most imposing Gothic cathedral and the city’s tallest building, recognizable from afar with its 100-meter-high tower.

Construction of the cathedral began in 1421 and took more than half a century to complete. The church’s most outstanding feature is the richly decorated main portal, adorned with more than 200 carved figures depicting scenes of the Last Judgment. Among the detailed stone carvings, angels, saints, and biblical figures found their place, representing masterpieces of medieval stone carving.

The interior of the church is equally impressive: stained glass windows, Gothic vaults, and an organ built in 1726 with 5,404 pipes await visitors. After climbing the 344 steps leading to the tower, a breathtaking view opens up over Bern, the Aare river bend, and on clear days, even the distant Alps. The cathedral is not only a religious center but also hosts cultural events, with organ concerts being particularly popular among visitors.

Standing out from the city centre

Federal Palace (Bundeshaus)

The impressive home of the Swiss federal parliament and one of Bern’s most significant political buildings.

The Bundeshaus was completed in 1902 in neo-Renaissance style and stands on a hill from which there is a stunning view of the Alps. The central part of the building is dominated by a 64-meter-high dome crowned by a statue of the goddess Helvetia. The parliament’s two chambers, the National Assembly and the Council of States, hold their sessions here, and the building functions as the center of Swiss democracy.

Visitors can view the ornately furnished council chambers and learn about Switzerland’s political system through guided tours.

There are also organised tours of the Parliament

Käfigturm (Cage Tower)

The „Cage Tower” is one of Bern’s most interesting historical buildings, a witness to the city’s medieval past and now serves as a cultural center.

Built in the 13th century, the tower originally formed part of the city’s second defensive ring, then later operated as a prison, hence its „cage” designation. Over the centuries, it was rebuilt several times and served various functions: besides those mentioned, it was also a city office.

The tower’s specialty is that it has an arched passage in its lower part that connects the two parts of the city, allowing both pedestrians and vehicles to pass underneath. Plaques placed on the tower walls present important events in Bern’s history.

Rose Garden (Rosengarten)

One of Bern’s most romantic locations, where more than 200 rose varieties bloom and from which the city’s most beautiful panorama opens up.

The Rosengarten spreads on the higher bank of the Aare River and originally served as a cemetery before being transformed into a rose garden in 1913. The carefully maintained garden is now famous not only for its roses but also for its view, which opens up over the entire old town and river bend. Besides the various rose varieties, irises and other ornamental plants enrich the garden’s flora.

The Rose Garden is a popular meeting place for both locals and tourists. The landscape becomes particularly magical at sunset.

Marzili Bath

One of Bern’s most popular outdoor baths and community spaces located on the banks of the Aare River.

Marzilibad is a special outdoor bath complex that has been operating since 1782 and is one of Europe’s oldest riverside baths. The facility is located on one of the Aare River’s calmer sections, where the water becomes pleasantly warm. The bath is not only suitable for swimming but is a real community center.

The complex offers various pools for all age groups, including a separate children’s pool and a 50-meter competition lane. In summer, Marzilibad becomes a vibrant cultural center: concerts, film screenings, and various community events are regularly held here.

Nydegg Bridge

One of Bern’s oldest and most beautiful bridges arches over the Aare River and connects the two parts of the old town.

The original wooden bridge was built in the 13th century to connect the old town with the other side of the river. The current stone bridge was built around 1844 and has been one of Bern’s most important transportation routes ever since. The bridge not only serves a practical function but is also architecturally outstanding: built in classicist style, it harmoniously fits into the historical cityscape with its elegant arch.

From the Nydegg Bridge, there is a beautiful view in both directions of the Aare River, as well as of the old town’s towers and rooftops. Below the bridge, the Aare’s crystal-clear water meanders slowly, and especially in summer, it’s a popular spot for sunbathing and relaxing on the riverbank.

Bear Park

Home to Bern’s heraldic animal and one of the city’s most popular natural attractions, where brown bears can live freely.

Bears have been symbols of Bern for centuries, and the city’s name is also connected to the bear. The Bear Park opened in 2009 on the banks of the Aare River and provides a modern, nature-friendly environment for the bears. The park covers more than 5,000 square meters with wooded areas, ponds, and caves where the bears can follow their natural behavior.

Visitors can observe the animals from a two-story walkway while learning about the bears’ lifestyle and the importance of nature conservation through information boards.

Near the Bear Park, there is also the old bear pit, which has historical significance and where Bern’s bears were kept for centuries. Today, this area is also part of the modern park and reminds us of the long historical connection between the city and the bears.

Gurten Hill

Bern’s local mountain and popular excursion destination, from which the city’s most beautiful panorama opens up.

The 858-meter-high Gurten Hill can be reached by a comfortable rack railway that has been operating since 1899 and is itself a tourist attraction. At the hilltop, there is an observation tower from which a breathtaking 360-degree panorama unfolds: we can see Bern, the Aare River bends, and on clear days, we can see all the way to the Alps.

Gurten is popular not only for its view but also for its year-round program offerings. In summer, outdoor concerts, festivals, and children’s programs are held here, while in winter it provides skiing and sledding opportunities. The hill has numerous hiking trails that offer opportunities for nature lovers at various difficulty levels.

Gurten is particularly popular among family visitors, as there is also an adventure park and playground here where children can have fun in a safe environment.

Kirchenfeld District

One of Bern’s most elegant and greenest districts, home to numerous museums and cultural institutions.

The district, developed at the end of the 19th century, became Bern’s cultural center, where the city’s most important museums are located. The district’s characteristic feature is the wide, tree-lined promenades and imposing bourgeois villas.

The district includes Helvetiaplatz, around which several significant museums are located, including the Bern Historical Museum and the Swiss Alpine Museum. The area is an excellent example of 19th-century urban planning, where they successfully created a balance that combines cultural functions with residential needs.

Bern Historical Museum

Switzerland’s second-largest historical museum presents Bern and Switzerland’s rich past through impressive collections.

The museum is housed in an imposing, castle-like building built in 1894. The collection contains more than 500,000 objects spanning Swiss history from prehistoric times to the present. The museum is particularly famous for its Burgundian treasury, which is one of Europe’s most valuable medieval collections. These gold and silver objects, weapons, and textiles date from the 15th-century Burgundian Wars.

The museum’s modernized exhibition spaces also offer interactive experiences where visitors can learn about history in a playful way. The museum also organizes regular temporary exhibitions that illuminate different historical periods or cultural phenomena in Switzerland.

Einstein House

The former home of world-famous physicist Albert Einstein now operates as a museum as part of the Bern Historical Museum.

Einstein lived in this modest apartment at Kramgasse 49 from 1903 to 1905, on the second floor with his wife, Mileva Marić, and their first child. Here he developed the revolutionary theory that forever changed the world of physics. The house has since been converted into a museum where visitors can gain insight into the scientist’s daily life and scientific work.

The three-room apartment is furnished with original furniture and personal items that evoke Einstein’s Bern period. The museum’s exhibition presents the story of the theory of relativity’s creation, as well as important milestones in Einstein’s private life and scientific career.

Visitors can view the documents and photographs that testify to the time when Einstein was still an unknown patent clerk and worked in his spare time on those theories that would later bring him the Nobel Prize.

Paul Klee Center

The museum dedicated to the art of world-famous Swiss-German painter Paul Klee is one of Bern’s most significant institutions.

The building designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano opened in 2005 and is itself a work of art. The three wave-like structures evoking „hills” harmoniously blend with the surrounding landscape and have gained worldwide recognition for their unique architectural solutions.

The museum boasts the world’s largest Paul Klee collection, preserving more than 4,000 works by the master. In the exhibition spaces, we can follow Klee’s artistic development, from his early watercolors to the abstract works of his mature period. The museum’s specialty is that it presents not only the paintings but also Klee’s theoretical writings and pedagogical work.

Swiss Alpine Museum

A unique museum dedicated to the world of Swiss mountains, presenting the natural and cultural heritage of the Alps.

It opened in 1905 and has been Europe’s leading alpine museum ever since. The collection presents every aspect of mountain life: from geological formation through flora and fauna to human activity and cultures. Visitors can learn about the natural history of the Alps, the history of mountaineering, and traditional alpine lifestyles.

One of the museum’s most outstanding parts is the map collection, which presents Switzerland’s different regions through three-dimensional models. These detailed scale models allow visitors to see the country’s geographical conditions from a bird’s-eye view. Through the museum’s interactive exhibitions, they provide insight into alpine ecosystems and the secrets of mountain hiking.

The museum pays special attention to the effects of climate change in the Alps and uses modern multimedia tools to show how glaciers and the mountain environment are changing. The collection also includes numerous historical mountaineering equipment and documents that tell the story of the conquest of the Alps.

Bern weather: when is the best time to visit?

Bern has a moderate continental climate that provides four well-distinguished seasons, each with its own special charm and program opportunities.

Spring (March-May):

Spring in Bern is a pleasant and gradually warming period when the average temperature ranges between 8-18°C. The city’s blooming parks and gardens are particularly beautiful during this period, and the days become increasingly longer. Precipitation is moderate, although spring showers may occasionally occur. This season is ideal for sightseeing and outdoor programs.

Summer (June-August):

During the summer months, Bern basks in pleasant warmth, with average temperatures ranging between 15-25°C. The days are long and generally sunny, although brief showers may occasionally occur. This is the most ideal period for outdoor bathing, hiking, and city festivals. We can spend particularly enjoyable time on Gurten Hill and along the Aare riverbank.

Autumn (September-November):

Autumn in Bern is a season splendid in beautiful colors when the average temperature gradually decreases from 12°C to 5°C. The days shorten, but this period is often still characterized by pleasant and sunny weather. The autumn foliage colors are particularly beautiful in the city’s parks and surrounding forests. Precipitation increases, but it’s still a suitable period for sightseeing.

Winter (December-February):

Winter in Bern is cold, with average temperatures ranging between -2°C and 4°C. Snowfall is frequent, and the city is particularly romantic in its winter atmosphere. Christmas markets and winter sports make this season attractive. Winter sports opportunities await visitors on Gurten Hill.

Best time to travel:

For visiting Bern, late spring (April-May) and early autumn (September-October) can be considered the most ideal periods, when the weather is pleasant, nature is beautiful, and tourist traffic is also more moderate.

Lake Constance, situated at the foot of the Alps, is a popular holiday destination thanks to its location, attractions, and excellent infrastructure.

The freshwater lake, located at the border of Austria, Germany, and Switzerland at the northern foot of the Alps, is the third largest lake in Central Europe after Lake Balaton and Lake Geneva. It receives its water mainly from the Rhine, and the water color is light greenish. During snowmelt, the water level often suddenly rises by 2-3 meters. Its maximum depth is 254 m.

Bregenz

The capital of Vorarlberg, Austria’s westernmost province, is situated in a beautiful natural environment.

The city has a rich historical past dating back to Roman times when it was known as Brigantium. Today it is primarily known as a cultural and tourist center, particularly famous for its summer music event, the Bregenz Festival, with its unique stage built on the water that is known worldwide.

The city can be divided into two main parts: the Old Town and the more modern lakeside district. In the Old Town, you’ll find charming medieval streets and the 13th-century Martinsturm, which is one of the symbols of Vorarlberg. From the tower, there is a magnificent view of Lake Constance and the surrounding mountains.

Lindau

Located in southern Germany, on the border of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Its most unique part is the old town, situated on an island connected to the mainland by a bridge.

Its most famous attraction is the harbor, guarded by a 19th-century lion statue and a lighthouse. This famous entrance is one of the most photogenic locations at Lake Constance. The lighthouse is Bavaria’s only such structure, open to visitors, and offers stunning panoramic views from its top.

The city center is full of medieval buildings, narrow cobblestone streets, and charming squares. The old town hall with its beautiful facade and frescoes is particularly noteworthy.

The iconic building of Lindau

Friedrichshafen

This German city is located in the middle of the northern part of the lake.

It is primarily known as the birthplace of Zeppelin airship travel. For this reason, its most important attraction is the Zeppelin Museum, which presents in detail the history of the famous airships, including the legendary Hindenburg. Through interactive exhibitions and full-scale reconstructions, visitors can get a glimpse into the golden age of airship travel.

The city center is modern but also contains historical elements. One such example is the Schlosskirche, a 17th-century baroque church that is one of Friedrichshafen’s symbols. At the pier, there is an observation tower offering a beautiful panorama of the lake.

The birthplace of Zeppelin

Meersburg

The city’s special atmosphere comes from the unique combination of historical buildings, vineyards, and cultural attractions.

Its most famous landmark is Meersburg Castle (Alte Burg), which is Germany’s oldest inhabited castle. Founded in the 7th century, this fortress has been preserved in impressive condition and provides insight into everyday medieval life. The castle offers a magnificent view of Lake Constance and the Alps.

In the downtown area, there are narrow cobblestone streets and colorful half-timbered houses. It is also an important cultural site, home to the Droste-Hülshoff Museum, which presents the former home of the famous German writer, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff.

The area around Meersburg is an excellent wine-growing region, so viticulture plays a significant role in the city’s life. The lakeside promenade is full of wineries where you can taste the region’s famous wines, especially Riesling.

Great wine-growing countryside

Überlingen

The central settlement of the northwestern arm of Lake Constance is famous for its historical heritage, picturesque lakefront, and charming old town.

Its historical center boasts numerous medieval and Renaissance buildings that have preserved their original form well. One of the most important sights is the Sankt Nikolaus Church, built in the Gothic style in the 1300s. Next to the church is the city’s main square, where the famous Rathaus, or city hall, is located, built in 16th-century Renaissance style.

It is also famous for its flower gardens, especially the beautiful green areas of Bodensee Park and Überlingen’s lakeside garden.

Centre of the north-western part of the lake

Mainau

This small island is the most beautiful part of Lake Constance, which we can also call the Island of Flowers.

The island is owned by the Swedish Bernadotte family, who landscaped and transformed Mainau into a botanical specialty in the 20th century. Its central building is Mainau Castle, dating from the 18th century and still owned by the Bernadotte family. The castle is baroque in style, with an elegant garden and a picturesque chapel.

Its greatest attraction is the wonderful botanical garden, which shows a different face throughout the year. In spring, thousands of tulips cover the park, in summer roses and tropical plants bloom, while in autumn the dahlia festival creates colorful flower fields.

The tropical section is presented in the palm house, where banana trees, orchids, and other exotic plants can be found. One of the most popular attractions is the butterfly house, one of the largest such facilities in Europe, where hundreds of colorful butterflies can be seen in their natural environment.

Konstanz

The largest and one of the most important cities on Lake Constance is located in southwestern Germany, directly on the Swiss border.

Its historical center has preserved its medieval character well, as it did not suffer significant destruction during World War II. The Konstanz Cathedral (Münster Unserer Lieben Frau) was an important ecclesiastical center for centuries and today still welcomes visitors with impressive interiors and an observation tower.

What might make its name familiar is the Council of Constance held between 1414 and 1418, which had a significant impact on European religious and political life. In memory of this, the iconic Imperia statue stands in the harbor, a huge rotating female figure alluding to the corrupt papacy and power games of the time.

Medieval town

Arbon

The Swiss small town’s history goes back more than 2000 years, as it was known as Arbor Felix in Roman times.

One of the city’s most important attractions is Schloss Arbon, an imposing medieval castle that now functions as a museum, showcasing the region’s history from Roman times to the present day. The Sankt Martin Church in the city is also noteworthy, as its tower offers a magnificent panorama of the lake and the surrounding countryside.

It is also an important city from an industrial perspective, as it was the founding location of the famous Saurer vehicle factory, which once manufactured trucks and buses. The Saurer Museum today presents the industrial heritage of the region, providing insight into the history and technological development of the factory.

Sankt Gallen

This Swiss city, located 11 km away, is the cultural and economic center of the region.

The settlement is best known for its world-famous 8th-century Benedictine abbey, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The abbey library preserves one of the world’s oldest and most valuable book collections, and its impressive baroque hall offers a special sight.

The old town is full of beautifully decorated, painted gabled balconies, which are characteristic architectural elements of Sankt Gallen. The Textile Museum here provides insight into Sankt Gallen’s famous textile industry past, as local lace and embroidery were sought-after products worldwide for centuries.

Ornate buildings are a striking feature of the city

Conny-Land

Located 15 km from Konstanz, this is Lake Constance’s most popular amusement park.

Attractions at Switzerland’s largest amusement park include the Cobra roller coaster, which has one of Europe’s steepest tracks and a section that starts backward. There are plenty of opportunities for younger visitors as well, such as the Dino Attack interactive experience, which is an exciting dinosaur-themed adventure.

The park’s specialty is that it offers not only amusement park experiences but also animal shows. The most famous of these is the seal and dolphin show. The parrot show is also very popular, where the birds demonstrate impressive tricks.

Geneva is one of Switzerland’s most important cities, primarily due to its wonderful location and atmosphere. As one of the centers of watchmaking, it is rightfully famous and popular worldwide.

The second most populous city in Switzerland after Zurich, it lies on the shores of Lake Geneva, at the outflow of the Rhône River. The city is surrounded by three mountain ranges: the main ridge of the Jura Mountains from the northwest, Mount Vuache from the south, and the Salève mountain range from the southeast.

Geneva attractions

Lake Geneva

The second-largest freshwater lake in Central Europe after Lake Balaton. 60% of the lake belongs to Switzerland and 40% to France.

The southern part of the lake extends into Geneva, making the city’s view even more beautiful. Several attractions are associated with the lake.

Jet d’Eau Fountain

An iconic attraction of Geneva and one of the city’s most famous symbols is the fountain on the lake.

Originally built in 1886 for industrial purposes: it was used as part of the city’s hydraulic network to release water pressure. Locals soon realized that the fountain could become a tourist attraction, so in 1891 it was moved to Geneva’s center and has served as a cityscape element ever since.

Its uniqueness lies in shooting more than 500 liters of water per second to a height of 140 meters daily. It’s particularly spectacular when it reaches its maximum height, especially on sunny days or with night illumination.

The fountain on the lake is a symbol of Geneva

St. Pierre Cathedral

An important site of the Geneva Protestant Reformation located in the old town.

Construction began in 1160, and it took more than a hundred years to complete. Its architectural style combines Gothic and Romanesque elements, while the facade is adorned with a classical portico added in the 18th century.

One of the cathedral’s most important historical figures is John Calvin, a key figure of the Protestant Reformation, who preached here in the 16th century and formulated the doctrines of Calvinism. His chair, known as „Calvin’s Chair”, can still be seen in the church today and has become a symbol of Protestantism.

Visitors can climb the cathedral tower via stairs, offering a magnificent panorama of Geneva and Lake Geneva.

The dominant church of the city

The Reformation Wall

A memorial wall dedicated to Calvinist churches located in front of the University of Geneva in the Bastions Park (Parc des Bastions).

This is an approximately 100-meter-long, straight stone wall intentionally left unadorned. At the center of the monument stands a 5-meter-tall group sculpture of four figures, with the Greek initials of Jesus of Nazareth carved into its stone base. It depicts the most important initiators and theologians of Calvinism: Theodore Beza, John Calvin, Guillaume Farel, and John Knox.

To the right and left of the central sculpture group are smaller, approximately 3-meter-tall statues representing historical figures associated with the Reformation who helped and promoted it, accompanied by reliefs showing the events that made them worthy of commemoration.

Geneva was the centre of Calvinism

Place du Bourg-de-Four

One of Geneva’s most charming squares located in the city’s old town, popular among both locals and tourists.

The square originally served as a Roman marketplace and was an important trading center in the Middle Ages, where travelers and merchants gathered.

Today, it remains a vibrant and bustling place surrounded by cobblestone streets, colorful old buildings, and cafes. In the middle of the square stands a beautiful fountain dating from the 18th century.

Flower Clock

One of Geneva’s most colorful attractions, located in the English Garden (Jardin Anglais) in the heart of the city.

It not only serves to tell time but is also an impressive example of garden art, as every part is made up of flowers. The clock was created in 1955 to honor the city’s watchmaking traditions.

The clock face is about 5 meters in diameter, making it one of the largest flower clocks in the world. It is regularly replanted according to the seasons, so its color and pattern constantly change. More than 12,000 plants are used for the clock annually.

Palace of Nations

One of Geneva’s most important buildings serves as the European headquarters of the United Nations (UN).

Its architectural style combines Art Deco and neoclassicism. The building complex includes several special rooms, including the Great Assembly Hall, which is the largest room and can accommodate more than 2,000 people. Important UN meetings and conferences are held here.

We can also enter the building as part of a tour. During tours, visitors can learn about the UN’s peace and human rights efforts and visit the halls.

The UN Headquarters in Europe

Broken Chair

A symbolic sculpture standing in front of the Palace of Nations on the Place des Nations.

Created in 1997 by Swiss artist Daniel Berset, the artwork depicts a 12-meter-tall wooden chair standing on three legs, with its fourth leg broken as if blown off by a mine.

The artwork powerfully draws attention to the devastating effects of wars, particularly injuries caused by mines and cluster bombs. Due to its size, it’s visible from afar and often serves as a site for events and demonstrations held in front of the UN.

Botanical Garden (Jardin botanique)

One of Switzerland’s most beautiful and largest botanical gardens, located in the city’s international quarter, close to Lake Geneva’s shore.

Founded in 1904, it now spans over 28 hectares, housing thousands of plant species and numerous beautiful natural habitats. The garden’s purpose is not only to showcase plants but also to preserve biodiversity.

The garden includes various garden sections and thematic areas. The rosarium features numerous rose varieties, and there’s an Alpine garden displaying the flora of the Swiss Alps. The garden also includes a medicinal herb garden where you can learn about plants used for medical purposes, and a large arboretum where you can admire impressive trees and rare shrubs.

The greenhouses are particularly popular with visitors, as they showcase special tropical and subtropical plants, including exotic flowers, orchids, and various cacti.

Bains des Pâquis

An interesting place on the shore of Lake Geneva that is also used as a sauna.

Its uniqueness lies in allowing visitors to swim directly in Lake Geneva’s waters while enjoying the spectacular view of the lake, the Alps, and the city’s surroundings. In winter, saunas and hot baths operate, making it a popular relaxation spot even then.

Brunswick Monument

The neo-Gothic mausoleum is located in the Jardin des Alpes park on the shore of Lake Geneva.

The monument was built in memory of Duke Eugene of Savoy-Brunswick, who died in 1871. He left his entire fortune to the city of Geneva on the condition that they build him a tomb in the city center.

The monument is 21 meters tall and resembles Italian Gothic art forms. The execution of the statue and decorations is elaborately detailed: Gothic columns, ornate towers, and fine stone carvings make it special. On top of the mausoleum stands a bronze equestrian statue of Eugene of Savoy-Brunswick.

Built in memory of a prince

Patek Philippe Museum

When in Geneva, you can’t miss a watch-related museum!

One of the city’s most important art and industrial museums was established by the Geneva Watch Traders Association to showcase the history and traditions of Geneva watchmaking.

The museum houses more than 4,000 watches, watch mechanisms, and timekeeping devices that reflect various aspects of the art of watchmaking. The collection includes timepieces from different historical periods, from antique pocket watches through 20th-century modern pieces to the latest technical innovations. Among the watches are masterpieces from many famous Swiss watchmakers, including Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Longines, and Vacheron Constantin.

One of the most special parts of the museum is the collection of rare and unique watches that are impressive from both artistic and technical perspectives.

As the country’s third-largest city, located in the northwestern part at the Swiss-German–French tripoint along the banks of the Rhine, it is often referred to as Switzerland’s cultural capital.

Attractions in Basel

Basler Münster

The Basel Cathedral is not only an important religious building in Basel but also one of the most significant in Switzerland.

The current church, mainly built in Romanesque style, started in the 12th century and was completed in the 13th century. It was later expanded with Gothic elements in the 14th and 15th centuries. It acquired its present form after being rebuilt following an earthquake in the 14th century. It became a Protestant church in the 16th century.

Its exterior makes it a dominant architectural symbol in the Swiss Rhine region. The facade and the two massive towers are covered in red sandstone, giving the building a distinctive color. Inside, the spatial arrangement and decorations represent a mix of architectural styles from different eras. The naves are covered by high Gothic vaults, while the stained-glass windows depict biblical stories and local saints.

The church houses the sarcophagus of Queen Anne of Habsburg and her son, Charles. It also features the famous tomb of Erasmus of Rotterdam, a humanist scholar and theologian who died in Basel.

Marktplatz

The marketplace has been a center of commerce, politics, and social events since the Middle Ages.

The most significant building here is the Rathaus, or Town Hall, which stands out with its impressive appearance and ornate facade. Originally built in the 14th century, it has been expanded and modified several times in the 16th century and later, now displaying a mix of Renaissance and Baroque styles.

The square is surrounded by various shops, cafes, and restaurants, and a market is regularly held here.

The town hall is a striking building with its colour

Spalentor

The Spalen Gate is one of Basel’s best-preserved medieval city gates and an important part of the city’s historic core.

Built in the 14th century, the gate was one of the main entrances to the city. At this time, Basel became an important commercial and scientific center in Europe. Several city gates were demolished in the 19th century, but fortunately, this one was preserved for posterity.

The gate is of solid construction, with high towers covered in tiles. Inside the gate, you can see the coat of arms decorations and Gothic arches.

St. Johanns-Tor

The St. John’s Gate is another significant former city gate that has been preserved.

Also built in the 14th century, it was named after the nearby St. John’s Monastery, which once stood close to the gate. It has been expanded and reinforced over time.

While not as imposing as the Spalentor, it has largely retained its original medieval form. It’s worth a walk here, as the Rhine is just a few minutes away.

Mittlere Brücke

Basel’s iconic bridge connects the old town with the pedestrian street Greifengasse on the opposite side.

Built in 1225, it is one of the oldest surviving bridges along the Rhine. The bridge has played a key role over the centuries as one of the main crossing points on the Rhine, linking Northern Europe with Southern Europe.

A notable feature is the Käppelijoch chapel in the middle, which was built for the protection of travelers. Its tiled roof is decorative, and many padlocks hang on its door grills.

Connecting the old city with the other side

Tinguely Fountain

The fountain is not just an urban attraction. It is also an outstanding example of modern art, where the interplay of movement and water creates a unique experience.

Swiss kinetic artist Jean Tinguely designed and created it in the 1960s. The sculptures are made of metal and are equipped with water-driven mechanisms that set the sculptures in motion.

Offene Kirche Elisabethen

Next to the Münster, it is the other most important and spectacular church.

Built between 1857 and 1864 in the neo-Gothic style, the construction was funded by the city and its citizens. For this reason, it remains an important community venue to this day. This is reflected in its name: open church.

From the outside, the Gothic style is very apparent: tall, slender towers, rich sculptural decorations. Inside, the church is vast, with its most striking feature being the colorful stained glass windows. Alongside traditional Christian symbols, contemporary art pieces also find their place, indicating the church’s openness and diversity.

The church is also a community place

Botanical Garden (Botanischer Garten der Universität)

The garden features a vast variety of plant species, serving not only as a place for outings but also as an important scientific center.

The garden officially opened in the 19th century and has been continuously expanding and evolving to showcase the impressive diversity of plants from around the world. It spans several hectares and consists of various horticultural and landscape elements, including outdoor beds, greenhouses, and thematic gardens.

It includes thousands of species, from local wild plants to rare and endangered species. Among the most famous are the orchids, carnivorous plants, and a multitude of trees and shrubs from tropical rainforests.

Zoo Basel

One of Switzerland’s oldest and best-known zoos, it opened in 1874.
