The beer halls are not listed in order of preference! We couldn’t really rank them anyway, since we drank good beer and had a great time at every single one.

Best beer halls in Prague

Pivovar Strahov

The Strahov Monastery Brewery is one of Prague’s most unique beer halls, operating on the grounds of a 12th-century monastery near Prague Castle.

The monastery’s brewing tradition dates back to the early 15th century, and the current brewery reopened in 2000 as a revival of those original traditions. It’s known for its own unfiltered, unpasteurized beers under the Sv. Norbert brand, including pale, amber, dark, IPA, and seasonal specialties.

It’s right on the way if you walk from the Petřín Tower to the castle. We ordered a small beer platter to go with our beer: bread, ham, and butter. The monastery courtyard offered a pleasant setting and good service. I can honestly say everything was perfect!

U Černého vola

„The Black Ox” is one of Prague’s most authentic pubs, popular with locals too.

Although the current establishment has been running since 1965, an inn and tavern stood on the site centuries earlier. The décor has remained almost unchanged: long wooden tables, worn benches, and old coats of arms on the walls. Their two main beers are Pilsner Urquell and both the pale and dark Velkopopovický Kozel.

It’s not far from the monastery mentioned above, on the road up to the castle, between two arcaded buildings. It’s not overrun with signage, which is exactly why the authentic Czech pub feeling comes through so strongly here. So if that’s what you’re after, don’t miss it!

U Dvou koček

„The Two Cats” is one of Prague’s best-known historic beer halls, welcoming guests in the heart of the Old Town, on Uhelný trh square.

The establishment has been running since 1678, making it one of the city’s oldest continuously operating beer halls. For a long time it was known for its excellently poured Pilsner Urquell, and in 2010 it added its own small brewery, producing pale and dark lager along with seasonal specialties. The pub has also served as a filming location for several Czech films.

It’s a must-visit beer hall in the city center, where alongside the beer, the iconic cat mural is also a landmark. The interior is simple, with a genuine pub feel.

U Kunštátů

One of the best craft beer halls in Prague’s Old Town, housed in the historic Kunštát Palace. The building dates back to the 12th century, and according to tradition, George of Poděbrady, the future Czech king, once lived here for a while. The pub doesn’t brew its own beer but offers more than 100 Czech craft beers, including brands from renowned breweries such as Zichovec, Matuška, and Sibeeria.

This is a place the ladies will love too! You can try several specially flavored beers, such as vanilla and grapefruit. I tried a couple: not bad, but I preferred sticking with traditional beer. 🙂

It’s also great that you can order a beer flight: we picked six types of beer and they were brought out on a wooden board. We tried to put together different styles, and the drinks-list photo shows just how many varieties there are to taste. You just write down the numbers on a piece of paper and you’re set.

Lokál Dlouhááá

One of Prague’s best-known modern beer halls, opened in 2009 as the first Lokál location of the Ambiente restaurant group. Its aim was to revive the atmosphere of classic Czech beer halls, combined with outstanding beer quality and traditional cuisine.

It gets its name from its nearly 70-meter-long interior, making it one of Prague’s longest restaurants. On tap you’ll find perfectly kept Pilsner Urquell, along with Kozel dark beer and alcohol-free Radegast Birell. Guests can order their beer in several traditional pouring styles – such as hladinka, šnyt, mlíko, or čochtan. Honestly, I never looked up what these actually mean. 🙂

It’s located in the Old Town, about 500 meters from the Church of Our Lady before Týn, so it’s easy to stop by. It’s technically a restaurant, but the front area was mostly filled with people just there for a beer, like us. Worth stopping in for a drink!

Lod Pivovar

The „Boat Brewery” is one of Prague’s most unusual beer halls, operating on an actual converted boat on the banks of the Vltava, near the Štefánik Bridge. The former sightseeing boat was converted into a brewery.

The brewery produces its own unfiltered, unpasteurized beers, with the pale 10° Legie, the classic Czech 12° Republika, and the dark 13° Monarchie lager always on offer. They also regularly brew special ales and IPAs.

On the deck level, near the entrance, you can still see the old brewing tanks once used to make the beer. The upper deck is open-air, and on a nice day it’s well worth heading up there to enjoy the view along with your beer. 🙂

Pivovar Národní

One of Prague’s newest craft breweries, located in the heart of the city center on Národní třída avenue.

The brewery opened in 2015 in the historic building of the 17th-century Voršilák (Ursuline) convent, giving it a special atmosphere: modern beer-making takes place within the walls of a centuries-old building. Its main beers are produced under the Czech Lion (Český Lev) brand, available in three types: a pale 11° lager, an unfiltered pale lager, and a distinctive amber 13° semi-dark.

Inside, two large brewing tanks are on display, while in good weather you can enjoy a beer in the beer garden in the courtyard. It also operates as a restaurant, reportedly serving very good food.

Pivovar Staré Město

Located in a hidden corner of the Old Town, near Charles Bridge, on U Dobřenských street.

The site’s history goes back to 1413, when a brewery was already mentioned here. The brewery in the building’s cellar has changed hands several times over the centuries, and under its current management has been operating again since 2019.

The beer hall brews its own unfiltered, unpasteurized beers on site, including a classic Czech pale lager, dark ležák, the pilsner-style 12° Ležák, as well as more modern styles such as APA and stout.

Although there are only a few tables in the cellar, the atmosphere is very pleasant. A variety of dishes can be ordered, and they’re praised by almost everyone. When we were there, it wasn’t crowded – a quiet little beer hall I’d highly recommend!

Vinohradský Pivovar

One of the best craft breweries in the Vinohrady district, housed in a historic building, in the former fermentation cellars of the old Vinohrady Municipal Brewery.

The old brewery operated in the first half of the 20th century, after which the space was used for storage until the building was damaged by a fire in 2001. The carefully restored brewery reopened in 2014 and has since become a popular meeting spot in the neighborhood.

Known for its own unfiltered, unpasteurized Czech beers. Its most popular beers include the Vinohradská 11° pale lager, the Vinohradská 12° classic Czech pilsner-style beer, and the more distinctive Jantarová 13° amber lager.

This one is a bit further out from the Old Town area, but it’s just a few tram stops away. It’s a genuinely popular spot – lots of people were there, and we camped out at the outdoor beer counter too. Inside, a large room displays the brewing equipment. If you’re in this neighborhood, don’t miss it!
