Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET)

One of New York’s most well-known and most visited cultural institutions, it considers itself one of the largest encyclopedic museums in the world. The unparalleled collection and the magnificent building together make this a must-stop for every art-loving visitor. During just a few hours here it is nearly impossible to see everything, so it is worth thinking in advance which section to explore first.

The museum was founded in 1870 as a civic initiative, with the goal of making art and culture accessible to everyone. Its neo-Renaissance main building on the edge of Central Park has undergone numerous expansions and renovations over the decades. Today the building itself is considered a landmark, whose façade and spacious interiors are impressive in their own right. Its cultural significance is undeniable – it is one of the proudest jewels of American public collections.

The museum’s collection encompasses more than two million objects representing five millennia of human creativity. In the Egyptian wing, the Temple of Dendur – transported from its original site – can be seen, while the European painting galleries offer masterpieces by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and El Greco. The ancient Greek and Roman wing, the arms and armor collection, and the Asian galleries also provide a remarkable experience. The Impressionist and Post-Impressionist rooms showcase works by Monet, Renoir, and Van Gogh.

Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

One of the most significant institutions of modern and contemporary art welcomes visitors in Midtown Manhattan who are interested in 20th and 21st century works. It is considered home to the world’s finest collection of modern art, where nearly every contemporary medium is represented – from painting and photography to design and film. A visit here is not only an aesthetic experience but a true intellectual adventure.

MoMA was founded in 1929 by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller and two associates, with the intention of giving modernism a living cultural home in New York. Over the decades, the original building was expanded several times; the current building, designed by Yoshio Taniguchi, reopened in 2004 and underwent another significant expansion in 2019. The modern architecture dominated by glass and steel perfectly reflects the spirit of the collection. Today it is one of the most visited museums in the world.

The crown jewels of the collection are Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon and Van Gogh’s The Starry Night, which draw crowds on their own. Matisse’s paper cut-outs, Frida Kahlo’s self-portraits, and Jackson Pollock’s drip paintings are all here. The design department presents everyday objects as iconic works of art – such as a Porsche automobile or a Bell helicopter. The film archive holds nearly thirty thousand motion pictures, with regular screenings.

American Museum of Natural History (Natural History Museum)

For anyone who wants to discover the Earth’s natural and cultural heritage in a single place, this museum is a true paradise.

Located on the Upper West Side, next to Central Park, the institution is not only a museum but also an active research center, where hundreds of scientists work to uncover the secrets of nature and humanity. It offers an unforgettable experience for children and adults alike.

The institution was founded in 1869, and its current, imposing building was erected in the late 19th century in a style blending Romanesque and Gothic elements. A bronze equestrian statue of Theodore Roosevelt greets visitors at the museum’s entrance. Over the years the building has grown continuously and today comprises 45 permanent exhibition halls. Its cultural role is immense: this is where the modern, spectacular display style of natural history museums was born.

The museum’s most famous attraction is the life-size blue whale model in the entrance hall, which at 29 meters in length immediately dazzles visitors. The dinosaur halls display original fossils, including one of the world’s finest Tyrannosaurus rex skeletons. The Hall of Planets and Meteorites, the rooms tracing human evolution, and the vividly crafted habitat dioramas all provide a special experience.

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

This remarkable institution is the perfect meeting point of architecture and art, with a building that is itself considered a work of art. The snail-shaped museum rising along Central Park is as stunning inside as it is outside, and over the decades it has become a true pilgrimage site for lovers of modern art. Its unique atmosphere leaves a lasting impression on every visitor.

The museum was founded by industrialist Solomon R. Guggenheim in 1939, but the iconic building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright did not open until 1959. Wright designed the cylindrical, spiraling form so that visitors could continuously view the exhibitions as they walked from top to bottom. The building became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019 and has become one of New York’s architectural symbols. The construction of the building itself took ten years.

The backbone of the collection consists of works by Kandinsky, Klee, Mondrian, Picasso, and Chagall, representing the finest of classical modernism. A particular pride of the museum is the Peggy Guggenheim bequest, which contains numerous Surrealist and Abstract Expressionist masterpieces. Temporary exhibitions always generate great media coverage and also provide an important opportunity for contemporary artists to present their work.

Whitney Museum of American Art

The institution presenting the largest and most comprehensive collection of American art is located at the intersection of the Meatpacking District and the High Line, offering an unparalleled perspective on the fine art heritage of the United States. The institution itself reflects the spirit of this dynamically evolving neighborhood, always feeling current with its constantly renewed exhibitions. Especially recommended for those who wish to gain a deeper understanding of American culture and identity.

The museum was founded in 1931 by sculptor Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, building on her own collection of works by contemporary American artists. It operated at various locations for decades until 2015, when its current building designed by Renzo Piano opened on the banks of the Hudson River. It is the only institution that collects exclusively American art.

The Whitney’s collection contains nearly 25,000 works, spanning from the early 20th century to the present day. Iconic works by Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, Alexander Calder, and Jasper Johns are all represented here. The Whitney Biennial, held every two years, is the most important survey of contemporary American art, regularly presenting provocative and debate-inspiring works. The museum also pays special attention to showcasing the work of marginalized and underrepresented artists.

The Frick Collection

This former private residence on the Upper East Side offers one of the most intimate and atmospheric museum experiences, where visitors can admire the unparalleled art collection of industrialist Henry Clay Frick. The artworks placed throughout the mansion create the feeling of being a guest in an aristocratic home rather than merely visiting a museum. An excellent destination for those who wish to immerse themselves in the works of the Old Masters away from the noise of crowds.

Steel industry entrepreneur Henry Clay Frick had the mansion built in 1913, and after his death it was opened to the general public as a museum in 1935. The building is itself a masterpiece: the classically styled villa was constructed to designs by Carrère and Hastings, with interiors decorated in the Louis XVI style. The museum was under renovation for an extended period and reopened in its full splendor in 2024.

Among the greatest treasures of the collection are Vermeer’s intimate interior scenes, Rembrandt’s self-portraits, Holbein’s English court portraits, and Velázquez’s royal likenesses. Works by El Greco, Goya, Turner, and Whistler are also present, as are valuable Renaissance sculptures and decorative arts objects. The Fragonard Room, whose walls are adorned with the series The Progress of Love, is one of the most celebrated spaces. The original furnishings of the library and entrance hall are still visible in their original state.

All information here can be found!

Brooklyn Museum

One of New York’s most exciting and versatile cultural institutions is located in Brooklyn, where nearly every genre is represented, from Egyptian antiquities to contemporary street art. Thanks to its progressive outlook and inclusive attitude, the museum is also a leader in community engagement.

The institution was founded in 1823, and its current Beaux-Arts building opened in 1897, designed by the firm McKim, Mead & White. Although it is the second largest encyclopedic museum in the United States by size, it long lived in the shadow of Manhattan’s institutions. In recent decades, however, through deliberate renewal it has taken a leading role in contemporary and local community programming.

The Egyptian collection is one of the most significant in the United States, with nearly six thousand objects including mummies and sculptural masterpieces. Judy Chicago’s installation The Dinner Party, a pioneer of feminist art, has been given a permanent home in the museum. The African, Oceanic, and Americas collections are also outstanding. The entire first floor is occupied by the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art.

All information here can be found!

New Museum

The boldest and most provocative showcase of contemporary art draws attention on the Lower East Side, where pushing conventional boundaries is part of the institution’s core mission. The exhibitions on view here regularly spark debates and open new perspectives for visitors. Especially recommended for those seeking a more exciting and daring art experience than mainstream galleries offer.

The New Museum was founded in 1977 by Marcia Tucker, who established the institution after leaving the Whitney Museum to support art that was truly new in the literal sense. Its current building, designed by Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, opened in the Bowery neighborhood in 2007. The building, composed of offset stacked white aluminum boxes, immediately became an icon of the street.

The New Museum has no permanent collection; instead, it surprises with constantly changing thematic group and solo exhibitions. Its standout program is the R&D season, within which emerging young artists can present their work. Over a quarter century of existence, the museum has provided an introduction for numerous artists who are now well recognized – before they became famous. From the top floor of the building, a breathtaking panorama opens over the Lower East Side.

All information here can be found!

Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

For anyone interested in military history, aviation, and the world of space exploration, the museum operating aboard a former aircraft carrier moored on the Hudson River is a true treat. The imposing ship and the real aircraft, submarines, and space vehicles placed on it together provide a unique spectacle and experience.

The USS Intrepid aircraft carrier was commissioned in World War II in 1943, and participated in numerous battles in the Pacific Ocean. It also played a role in the Vietnam War and in the recovery of Apollo program return capsules before being decommissioned in 1974. It was converted into a museum in 1982 and has since become one of New York’s most remarkable attractions.

On board visitors can see the only remaining Lockheed A-12 Blackbird spy plane preserved in flyable condition, which was deployed by the USA during the Cold War. The Space Shuttle Enterprise prototype has also found its permanent home here in a dedicated pavilion. Visitors can also walk inside the nuclear-powered submarine USS Growler, and various simulators are available.

The aircraft placed on the flight deck of the carrier represent different eras and roles. Among them stands out a Concorde supersonic aircraft, which to this day remains the only passenger plane that exceeded the speed of sound.

Museum of the City of New York

The institution presenting the complete history, social development, and cultural heritage of New York City in a single place is located along Fifth Avenue on the edge of East Harlem. The museum is unique in that it concentrates exclusively on the city, laying before visitors its turbulent and fascinating past.

The institution was founded in 1923 with the goal of preserving the memories of the rapidly changing metropolis. The symmetrical Georgian-style building was erected in 1932 and has since become one of the most important guardians of the city’s memory. The museum’s collection grows continually through donations, photographs, and documents that record the lives of all layers of New York society.

A special pride of the museum is the permanent exhibition New York at Its Core, which spans four centuries in a compelling interactive narrative. The collection of more than 750,000 items includes toys, furniture, photographs, films, and fashion objects alike. The Berenice Abbott photo series captures New York of the 1930s in wonderful detail.

All information here can be found!

Tenement Museum

This remarkably vivid reconstruction of immigrant life and working-class daily existence on the Lower East Side offers an entirely different museum experience from traditional collections. It does not parade rows of objects, but rather brings to life the stories of real people in authentically furnished apartments. Anyone who wants to understand how New York became the city of dreams and struggles should definitely pay a visit here.

Its foundation is the tenement building at 97 Orchard Street, built in 1863, whose apartments were home to nearly six thousand immigrants from the 1860s until 1935. The building was saved in 1988-from demolition by Ruth Abram and Anita Jacobson, who created this unique museum. The Tenement Museum was designated a National Monument in 2006, recognizing the importance of immigrant history to American identity. Today it is one of the most exciting and empathetic museums in the United States.

The museum can only be visited on guided tours, which evoke different eras and immigrant stories. The apartments of Irish, German, Jewish, and Italian immigrant families have been restored to their original state, from period furniture to personal belongings. The fragmentary yet moving life stories of the Schneider and Levy families, and the Baldizzi and Rogarshevsky families, still live on vividly within the building.

All information here can be found!

Cooper Hewhere Smithsonian Design Museum

One of New York’s most hidden yet most enchanting institutions awaits lovers of design and applied arts on Carnegie Hill, in a magnificently restored Gilded Age mansion.

The museum was founded in 1897 by Amelia and Eleanor Hewhere, granddaughters of Cooper Union, with the intention of documenting the history of design and decorative arts. Since 1976 it has operated as part of the Smithsonian Institution, and in 2014 it reopened in renovated form within the walls of the Carnegie mansion, now enriched with an interactive experience. The former home of steel magnate Andrew Carnegie is itself a historically significant landmark. The museum is the only institution in the USA dedicated exclusively to design.

The collection encompasses nearly 210,000 objects, from antiquity to the present day. Its special feature is the digital pen and interactive table available to visitors, with which anyone can try their hand at being a designer. The textile, furniture, jewelry, and graphic collections feature iconic pieces, including works by Alvar Aalto, Charles and Ray Eames, and Ettore Sottsass.

All information here can be found!

National September 11 Memorial & Museum

This place of remembrance honoring the victims and heroes of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks at the former site of the World Trade Center serves both as a memorial and a site of learning.

The two reflecting pools created in memory of those killed were built on the footprints of the twin towers and dedicated in 2011, on the 10th anniversary. The underground museum opened in 2014, based on a design by the firm Davis Brody Bond. The wreckage and preserved original structural elements provide a stunning sense of reality. The entire complex is an architectural masterpiece of trauma processing and memory preservation.

The museum’s exhibitions evoke the day of the tragedy and its background through original artifacts, personal belongings, photographs, and audio recordings. The Haul fire truck, which rescuers drove in at the moment of the collapse, is one of the most moving memorial objects. The bronze panels bearing the names of nearly three thousand victims have been placed along the edges of the reflecting pools.

Ankara, befitting Turkey’s capital, boasts numerous excellent museums.

Best museums in Ankara

Museum of the Republic

Located in the historic building of the second Turkish Grand National Assembly, this museum preserves the memories of the early decades of the Turkish Republic.

The parliament building, used between 1924 and 1960, was the site of important political decisions where defining laws were passed and the country’s democratic institutional system was shaped. The building was constructed in neoclassical style, with imposing columns and a dignified facade.

The museum displays the original furnishings of the parliamentary chamber where representatives convened, the presidential podium, and voting machines. Separate exhibition sections focus on the republic’s cultural, educational, and social reforms that modernized the country. Documents, photographs, and period objects illustrate the impact of these reforms on everyday life.

One of the building’s special features is Atatürk’s workplace, which has been preserved in its original state with furniture and personal items. The museum is an excellent complement to the War of Independence Museum, together providing a complete picture of the birth of modern Turkey.

All information can be found here!

Rahmi M. Koç Museum

This museum specializing in transportation and industrial technology is one of Europe’s most interesting technical collections, housed in the historic Çengelhan caravanserai and the adjacent Depo building.

The museum opened in 2005, founded by entrepreneur and collector Rahmi M. Koç, who spent decades gathering the exhibited items. During the restoration of the buildings, the atmosphere of Ottoman caravanserais was preserved while modern museum functions were incorporated.

The exhibition is divided into three main sections: transportation, scientific instruments, and everyday life objects. The transportation section features historic cars, locomotives, airplanes, and ship models, including one of the oldest Turkish railway cars. The scientific section showcases the evolution of measurement, navigation, and communication, with interactive installations that are particularly popular with children. The miniature railway model is a faithful replica of Anatolian railway lines.

All information can be found here!

Çengelhan Rahmi M. Koç Museum

Part of the Rahmi M. Koç Museum, this section presents industrial heritage and everyday cultural objects.

The exhibition focuses on everyday life objects: historic shop furnishings, advertisements, packaging, and household items bring to life Turkey of the past century. A separate section presents the history of Turkish commerce, the operation of guilds, and traditional crafts. One of the most interesting exhibits is the complete furnishing of a 19th-century pharmacy, transported here from its original location.

The museum is smaller than the main Rahmi M. Koç Museum, but for this very reason offers a more intimate and detailed experience. Temporary exhibitions and cultural programs also enrich the offerings, often focusing on local history and craft traditions.

Museum of Anatolian Civilizations

One of Turkey’s most significant archaeological museums, which won the European Museum of the Year Award in 1997.

The institution is housed in a 15th-century bedesten (covered market) and caravanserai buildings constructed during the reign of Sultan Mehmed II. The restored building complex is itself an art historical treasure, with domes and vaults showcasing characteristics of Ottoman architecture.

The museum’s collection presents Anatolia’s history in chronological order from the Paleolithic to the Classical period. The most valuable pieces include finds from the Neolithic settlement of Çatalhöyük, including the world-famous mother goddess statues and murals. Relics of the Hittite Empire have been given a separate hall: giant statues, reliefs, and royal inscriptions can be seen, evoking this once-mighty empire. Finds from the Urartian, Phrygian, and Lydian civilizations also create an impressive exhibition.

All information can be found here!

Ethnographic Museum

This museum specializing in Turkish folk culture and traditions opened in 1930, one of the country’s first Republican-era museums.

The building was designed in classical Seljuk style, with its white marble facade and distinctive gateway evoking the atmosphere of old Anatolian medrese buildings. The structure originally also served as Atatürk’s temporary resting place from 1938 to 1953, until the Anıtkabir was completed.

The collection comprises more than 60,000 objects representing every aspect of Turkish folk life. The textile collection is particularly valuable: Ottoman-era kaftans, embroidery, carpets, and kilims are on display, showcasing the distinctive motifs of different regions. The metalworking, carving, ceramics, and calligraphy rooms feature excellent examples of traditional Turkish crafts. A separate section deals with Turkish room furnishings, where the complete furniture of a traditional Ottoman house can be viewed.

All information can be found here!

War of Independence Museum

This museum dedicated to the memory of the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1923) is located in the building of the first Turkish Grand National Assembly.

The building constructed in 1920 witnessed the birth of modern Turkey; it was here that the laws and decisions were passed that transformed the Ottoman Empire into a republic. The original assemblies were held in the building’s central hall, which remains visible today in its original state with period furniture and furnishings.

The museum’s exhibition presents the events of the War of Independence in detail: maps, weapons, documents, photographs, and personal items tell the story of the Turkish nation’s struggle for survival. A separate section focuses on Atatürk’s leadership role, military genius, and the war’s crucial battles. One room displays portraits and biographies of the members of the first National Assembly who participated in making historic decisions.

State Art and Sculpture Museum

This museum presenting the development of Turkish fine arts and sculpture is one of the country’s most significant contemporary art collections.

The institution opened in 1980, with the goal of presenting Turkish artistic movements and creators from the late 19th century to the present day. The painting collection chronologically presents the development of Turkish art: from the late Ottoman period’s works reflecting Western influences to Republican-era modernist movements. It also contains abstract, expressionist, and conceptual works that demonstrate the diversity of Turkish art.

A separate room focuses on Orientalist painting, where Turkish artists immortalized their own culture and landscapes. The sculpture section contains imposing bronze and marble works, many of which are visible in copies throughout Ankara’s public spaces.

Ulucanlar Prison Museum

The former prison building opened as a museum in 2011, serving as a witness to Turkey’s dark political history.

The institution, which operated from 1925 to 2006, also held political prisoners, including writers, journalists, and politicians who were imprisoned under various regimes. The building’s original cells, corridors, and execution site have been preserved, providing an authentic museum experience.

The exhibition uses wax figures and sound effects to bring to life the prison’s daily routine, showing prisoners’ living conditions and the mechanisms of political oppression. A separate section deals with the stories of famous prisoners and the development of Turkish democracy.

Best museums in Johannesburg

Apartheid Museum

South Africa’s most important institution of history opened in 2001 with the aim of documenting and preserving the memories of the apartheid system for posterity.

The building’s modern, symbolic architecture itself carries a message: its seven pillars represent the seven principles of the South African constitution. Visitors randomly receive either „white” or „non-white” entrance tickets, thus experiencing the feeling of segregation from the very first moment.

The museum guides visitors chronologically through 22 thematic exhibition spaces from the National Party’s 1948 election victory to the 1994 democratic elections. Documentary films, original photographs, personal objects, and interactive exhibitions showcase daily life during the segregation period. One of the most sobering exhibition sections tells the stories of political prisoners, while another section documents the Sharpeville massacre.

It not only conveys historical facts but demonstrates the devastating impact of the apartheid system on society through human stories. A gallery dedicated to Nelson Mandela’s life traces his journey from his Robben Island cell to his presidential inauguration. The visit is a profound experience that often takes several hours, but it is essential for those who wish to understand South Africa’s contemporary history.

All information can be found here!

Sci-Bono Discovery Centre

Africa’s largest interactive science museum opened in 2005 in the Newtown cultural district in a converted power station.

The building’s industrial past has been preserved, but the interior space has been completely transformed to accommodate more than 350 interactive exhibits. The name meaning „for the benefit of science” in Xhosa reflects the museum’s educational mission.

The exhibitions cover a wide spectrum: installations suitable for experimentation can be found in physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, and technology. Visitors can generate electricity, understand how light and sound work, or program robots. The Digital Dome planetarium presents the universe with 3D projections, while the Energy exhibit showcases different energy sources and the importance of sustainability.

All information can be found here!

South African National Museum of Military History

The museum, founded in 1947, is located in the Saxonwold district, near Zoo Lake, and presents South Africa’s military history from the Boer Wars to the present day.

The building was originally created to preserve Second World War memories, but its collection has since expanded significantly. The museum is situated in a 22-hectare park, where tanks, aircraft, and artillery equipment can be viewed in the outdoor exhibition area.

In the indoor exhibition halls, we can learn about the history of South Africa’s wars in chronological order: documents from the Boer Wars, the African theaters of the First and Second World Wars, as well as the border wars are all featured. The collection of personal items is particularly valuable: soldiers’ letters, diaries, uniforms, and decorations give a human face to historical events.

One of the museum’s special features is the presentation of the history of African mercenaries and Black soldiers, who rarely appear in official military history accounts. The Spitfire and Messerschmitt aircraft located in the outdoor area are particularly popular among visitors.

All information can be found here!

Johannesburg Art Gallery

The museum, which opened in 1915, is located in the heart of Joubert Park and boasts one of Africa’s most significant art collections. The building’s architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens, designed the museum in a classical neo-baroque style, which is an architectural attraction in itself.

The collection contains more than 9,000 works of art: from works by European masters – including Picasso, Monet, and Rodin – to contemporary African art. The collection of works by South African artists is particularly significant, showcasing the country’s artistic development from the colonial era to the present day. The museum is continuously expanding and pays special attention to acquiring works by Black and colored artists.

Among the galleries is a rich sculpture collection that can also be viewed in the building’s inner courtyard and the surrounding park.

All information can be found here!

Wits Art Museum

The museum located on the University of the Witwatersrand campus opened in its current, modern building in 2012, although its collection has more than a century of history.

Its collection contains more than 10,000 works of art, primarily focusing on African contemporary and historical arts. The representation of South African artists is particularly strong: the collection includes art from the apartheid era, activist works by Black and colored artists, as well as post-apartheid artistic trends. European and international pieces are also present, but the emphasis is clearly placed on the African perspective.

The museum organizes constantly changing temporary exhibitions that explore themes of African identity, politics, social justice, and cultural heritage. The institution actively supports new generations of artists and regularly hosts debut exhibitions by young creators.

All information can be found here!

Lindfield Victorian House Museum

The Victorian villa built in the 1890s is located in the historic Parktown Ridge neighborhood and provides an authentic picture of the lives of wealthy European settlers during the gold rush era. The building showcases the elegant style of the late Victorian era with its original furniture, furnishings, and decorations.

The house’s special feature is that the original Stuart family’s personal belongings are also on display: family photographs, correspondence, and everyday utensils help us understand the lifestyle of the era. As a result of serious research work, every room has been faithfully reconstructed, from the fireplaces to the heavy brocade curtains.

During guided tours, visitors can explore the salons, bedrooms, kitchen, and staff quarters. The building’s architecture is also noteworthy: the cast-iron balconies, glazed verandas, and decorated facade reflect the architectural trends of the time. The garden is designed in Victorian style with period-appropriate plants and a cast-iron pavilion.

All information can be found here!

The institution located in the Newtown cultural district opened in 1994, right at the dawn of democracy, with the aim of showcasing the rich cultural diversity of the African continent. The building is housed in a converted warehouse that perfectly fits the district’s industrial heritage.

The museum’s collection contains more than 3,000 objects from different regions of the continent. The exhibition presents traditional African sculptures, ritual masks, textiles, jewelry, and utilitarian objects from more than 40 African countries. The West African tribal art works and the spiritual objects of South African ethnic groups are particularly valuable. Interactive exhibition elements allow visitors to understand the cultural and religious significance of individual objects.

Museum Africa’s special feature is that it not only displays historical objects but also supports contemporary African artists. The museum emphasizes Africa’s rich cultural heritage.

All information can be found here!

Origins Centre

The museum opened in 2006 on the University of the Witwatersrand campus presents the story of Africa’s origins and humanity’s cradle. The center’s special feature is that it places the culture, art, and spirituality of Africa’s first people in focus in a modern museum environment.

The exhibition guides visitors chronologically: from the earliest stone tools through reproductions of San people’s rock paintings to the formation of modern African identity. One of the most spectacular parts is the digitally reconstructed versions of cave paintings thousands of years old, originating from the Drakensberg Mountains and other South African sites.

The interactive exhibitions allow visitors to understand how people lived in different regions of Africa, what tools they used, and how human culture developed. The museum places special emphasis on presenting the traditions of indigenous peoples, especially the San and Khoi communities.

All information can be found here!

James Hall Museum of Transport

Africa’s largest transport museum opened in 1964 and preserves more than 250 vehicles in a historic building complex.

The collection spans the period from horse-drawn vehicles of the late 1800s to modern cars, showcasing the development of South African transportation. The museum’s special feature is its collection of rare and unique vehicles: South Africa’s first gasoline-powered car, President Paul Kruger’s carriage, and more than 60 motorcycles can be found here. In one separate hall, the history of fire engines is presented, including vehicles that participated in fighting Johannesburg’s major fires.

The museum’s interactive exhibitions allow children to climb aboard some vehicles and experience what it was like to travel on a 1920s bus. There is also a vintage tram on the museum grounds that operates on its original track. Numerous historical curiosities can be found around the building: for example, former tram stops and road signs that preserve memories of Johannesburg’s urban transportation. The museum regularly organizes vintage car rallies and transportation history lectures, making it a must-see for classic vehicle enthusiasts.

All information can be found here!

Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre

One of South Africa’s most important memorial and educational institutions, which presents the history of the Holocaust and other genocides in a global and local context.

Its collection consists of archival photographs, historical documents, survivor testimonies, and audiovisual materials. In addition to the Holocaust, it also presents, for example, the Rwandan genocide, with a strong comparative perspective. Personal objects and stories are particularly emphasized, as they make historical events more relatable.

The center’s aim is not only to process the tragedies of the past but also to emphasize human rights, tolerance, and social responsibility.

Best museums in Lausanne

Olympic Museum (Musée Olympique)

One of the world’s most comprehensive sports museums opened in its new form in 2013 on the shores of Lake Geneva, in a stunning building that stands as an architectural masterpiece in its own right. The museum presents the history of the Olympic ideal across three floors, from the ancient Greek games to the modern Olympics, with the help of more than 10,000 artifacts.

In the interactive exhibition spaces, visitors can try out numerous sports on simulators, view Olympic medals, torches and sports equipment, and gain insight into the lives of Olympic athletes. The museum’s pride is its audiovisual archive, which preserves more than 43,000 hours of footage from the history of the Games.

The complex also includes an impressive sculpture park where various artists’ Olympic-themed works can be seen. Thanks to its lakeside location, there are unparalleled views of the French Alps, while the museum’s café and restaurant offer a Mediterranean-style terrace. The building also received environmental certification for its sustainable architectural solutions.

MUDAC (Musée de Design et d’Arts Appliqués Contemporains)

The Museum of Contemporary Design and Applied Arts is housed in a 17th-century building, which previously operated under the name Maison Gaudard.

The museum opened its doors in 1995 and has since become one of Switzerland’s most significant design museums, showcasing a wide spectrum of contemporary art, design, graphics and textiles. In addition to the permanent collection, several temporary exhibitions are organized annually, focusing on 20th-21st century design, fashion art, typography and industrial design.

Its special feature is that it not only displays objects but also the creative process, giving visitors insight into designers’ working methods. Despite its smaller size, the museum has gained international recognition by exhibiting the works of renowned designers such as Jean Prouvé and Charlotte Perriand.

All information can be found here!

Collection de l’Art Brut

One of the world’s most significant outsider art collections has been operating since 1976 in an 18th-century castle, the former Château de Beaulieu building.

The museum was founded by French painter Jean Dubuffet, who was a committed advocate of art created not by academic artists, but by self-taught creators, people suffering from mental illness, or those living on the margins of society.

The collection contains more than 60,000 works of art from approximately 1,000 artists: paintings, sculptures, textile works and installations. The exhibited works often speak with shocking intensity and honesty about the inner world and human experience that doesn’t fit into conventional artistic directions. The museum also regularly organizes temporary exhibitions that introduce new artists or arrange thematic displays.

All information can be found here!

Hermitage Foundation (Fondation de l’Hermitage)

A villa from the 1850s houses this art foundation, which has welcomed audiences with outstanding temporary exhibitions since 1984. The building was once the home of banker Charles-Juste Bugnion, who was renowned as a great art patron, and after his death, his property was transferred for artistic purposes.

The foundation organizes 3-4 major exhibitions annually, focusing on 19th-20th century art: works by Monet, Magritte, Cézanne and Picasso have been displayed here. In terms of exhibition quality and curation, the foundation has earned international fame.

The six-hectare English park surrounding the building is a true oasis above the city: tree-lined paths, grassy areas and beautiful views of Lake Geneva and the Alps. The tea room operating on the villa’s terrace is an excellent place for relaxation combined with a cultural experience. From spring to autumn, the park also functions as a sculpture park where contemporary artists’ works can be seen.

All information can be found here!

Vidy Roman Museum (Musée romain de Lausanne-Vidy)

The archaeological museum on the shores of Lake Geneva, at the site of the ruins of the Roman settlement Lousonna, provides insight into everyday life during the Roman era. The settlement was established around 15 AD and was located along an important trade route that connected Italy with the Rhine region.

The museum building was built directly over the excavated ruins: beneath the glass floor, the remains of the Roman vicus (small town) are visible, including the foundations of streets, houses and public buildings. The exhibition displays mosaics, bronze objects, ceramic vessels, coins and everyday items, all discovered on site.

A special attraction is the visual reconstruction in the museum’s basement, which shows what the interior of a Roman house might have looked like with furniture, tools and decorations. The museum also contains interactive elements: visitors can try Roman games or learn about the writing systems of the era. The outdoor part of the ruins site is freely accessible, and informative signs help with orientation.

All information can be found here!

Museum of Archaeology and History (MCAH)

The institution located in the heart of the Palais de Rumine presents the history of the Lake Geneva region from the Neolithic to the present day, and even into the future.

The free-to-visit permanent exhibition begins with a full-scale lakeside excavation and Neolithic cemetery visible through a glass floor, then continues with the year 3081, followed by 1803, the date of Vaud canton’s independence.

The museum’s history dates back to 1818, when the first collection of the cantonal museum was created. The institution, named Museum of Antiquities in 1852, Archaeological Museum in 1877, and then Historical Museum in 1908, has been housed in the Palais de Rumine building since 1908. The year 1955 was a turning point when, under the leadership of curator Anne-Lise Reinbold, the museum adopted its current name. The building is located in the central Place de la Riponne.

The museum’s collection numbers more than 100,000 objects covering every historical period from prehistory to modern times. The exhibition includes ceramics, baskets and wooden objects from the Neolithic period, discovered on the region’s lakeshores. The museum offers three permanent exhibition rooms: one dedicated to prehistory, one to history, and one to the coin and medal collection. Special pieces include the famous princely chariot burial from Payerne from the early Iron Age, as well as decorations from Saint-Sulpice.

All information can be found here!

Zoological Museum

The zoological collection on the fifth floor of the neo-Renaissance Palais de Rumine building displays animals from all over the world.

The museum’s specialty is the world’s largest stuffed white shark, which is 5.89 meters long and the centerpiece of the spectacular exhibition. Visitors can freely explore the wonders of the animal world displayed in old-fashioned vitrines, with free admission.

The institution’s roots go back to 1818, when the cantonal museum was created, initially containing only 678 shells, 377 fossils, 239 foreign and domestic birds, a small Surinamese snake collection, and a few quadrupeds preserved in alcohol. In 1833, with the acquisition of Daniel-Alexandre Chavannes’ collection, the zoological collections expanded significantly. They moved to the newly built Palais de Rumine building in 1909.

The museum’s collection now numbers approximately 50,000 vertebrates and nearly 2 million invertebrates. The main gallery regularly displays the major groups of vertebrates, while the comparative anatomy room features skeletons and specimens preserved in glass vessels with impressive detail.

The entomological collections, especially the ants, represent the museum’s highlight – the institution has operated as a recognized ant research center since 1982. Special collections include Vladimir Nabokov’s butterfly collection, as well as James Rochat’s insect collection of 100,000 specimens.

All information can be found here!

Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts (MCBA)

The institution, which has been present on the Swiss art scene since 1841, has been located in the heart of the Plateforme 10 arts district since 2019. The museum presents numerous temporary exhibitions throughout the year while drawing on its rich collection of more than 10,000 works of art, spanning from the late 18th century to the present day.

It was created in 1841 through private initiative from funds donated by artist Marc-Louis Arlaud, who became the institution’s first curator. In October 2019, the museum moved to the new Plateforme 10 facility. The building’s architecture is the work of Barcelona’s Estudio Barozzi Veiga design studio, whose monumental brick form evokes the site’s past, the history of the locomotive depot.

The museum’s reputation is due to five magnificent collections: works by Abraham-Louis-Rodolphe Ducros, Charles Gleyre, Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, Félix Vallotton and Louis Soutter. The collection’s main emphasis spans from the 18th century to post-impressionism, with fine examples of Cubism and Vaud abstract art.

The modern and contemporary art collections include works by Marcel Broodthaers, Rolf Iseli, Tadeusz Kantor, Charles Rollier, Daniel Spoerri and Maria Elena Vieira da Silva. Between 1990-2010, the museum focused on acquiring works by significant international artists.

Admission is free on the first Saturday of every month.

All information can be found here!

Geological Museum

The collection located on the third floor of the Palais de Rumine is a true history book, full of treasures and testimony to an often mysterious past. The free-to-visit permanent exhibition offers fossils, crystals and an explanation of the formation of the Alps for the general public.

The museum was created in 1818 and moved into the Palais de Rumine in 1906. Initially, the institution mainly preserved and displayed about a thousand minerals donated by Tsar Alexander I to Frédéric-César de La Harpe, before diversifying over time. In 1874, thanks to Eugène Renevier’s efforts, the museum gained its independence and opened to the general public from 1878.

Among its greatest attractions is „The Welcome Nugget”, a replica of the largest gold nugget ever found, weighing 57.3 kilos, as well as one of Europe’s most complete mammoth skeletons, discovered in the Praz-Rodet gravel pit near Brassus. The museum’s collection manages approximately one million rock, fossil and mineral samples.

The mineralogical exhibition is continuously enriched and displays magnificent crystals from all over the world, including a unique collection of polished stones from the Swiss Alps, including large pink fluorites. The museum has the most significant collection of fluorescent minerals in the country. Additional highlights include remarkable examples of ichthyosaurs, giant palms and ammonites.

Yerevan welcomes visitors with a rich cultural offering, and its museums are true treasures of the country’s history, art, and traditions. Below, I present the Armenian capital city’s most significant museums, which are equally interesting for those interested in history, art, and ethnography.

Best museums in Yerevan

Armenian Genocide Museum

Next to the Tsitsernakaberd memorial site, it opened in 1995, providing detailed documentation of the tragedy that occurred in the Ottoman Empire.

The museum’s earth-sheltered building offers an underground route through a dark chapter of history: photographs, personal items, letters, and diplomatic documents tell the story of the systematic genocide. The exhibition specifically addresses the fate of survivors, orphan rescue operations, and international responses.

Its collection also includes accounts by foreign diplomats, missionaries, and journalists who were eyewitnesses to the events. Some rooms focus on cultural genocide: documenting destroyed temples, annihilated manuscripts, and scattered communities. On the memorial wall, the names of countries that have officially recognized the Armenian Genocide can be read.

All information can be found here!

Armenian History Museum

The institution on Republic Square is the guardian of Armenia’s national memory, presenting the country’s history from the Stone Age to the present day.

The museum building, founded in 1921, was built in neoclassical style according to Alexander Tamanyan’s plans and is part of the square’s unified architectural concept. The collection contains more than 400,000 items, of which approximately 35,000 are on permanent display.

Outstanding pieces of the archaeological department include Urartian finds from Erebuni fortress: bronze helmets, written cuneiform tablets, and ritual vessels. Jewelry and weapons from the Bronze Age Metsamor site testify that Armenia was a center of advanced civilization thousands of years ago. The ancient numismatic collection displays coins from Armenian kingdoms and evidence of Silk Road trade connections.

The medieval department attracts attention with its rich manuscript collection, liturgical objects, and craft masterpieces. Particularly valuable are the illuminated gospels, which are pinnacle achievements of Armenian book painting. The museum’s ethnographic section presents traditional Armenian lifestyle: folk costumes, carpets, household utensils, and craft tools from different historical regions.

Modern exhibitions document the formation of the Armenian Republic, the Soviet period, and the achievement of independence. Personal items, photographs, and documents bring to life the eventful events of the 20th century.

All information can be found here!

Cafesjian Art Center

The contemporary art museum located in the Cascade stairway building complex is built on the private collection of American-Armenian businessman Gerard L. Cafesjian.

The center, opened in 2009, aims to place Yerevan on the region’s contemporary art map and serve as a bridge between East and West. The building’s five underground levels offer several thousand square meters of exhibition space for modern and contemporary works.

The collection’s main emphasis is on glass art: American artist Dale Chihuly’s monumental glass installations are the museum’s crown jewels. The chandelier-like creations in vibrant colors, abstract glass forms, and light effects provide a stunning visual experience. Additionally, the center displays contemporary paintings, sculptures, and video art works by international and Armenian artists.

The design of the building’s interior spaces is itself a work of art: elegant courtyards, naturally lit galleries, and modern architectural solutions are in harmony with the exhibited works. In addition to the museum’s permanent collection, it regularly organizes rotating temporary exhibitions that address contemporary themes.

All information can be found here!

Ararat Museum

The institution dedicated to the history of the Armenian national drink, cognac, is located in the Ararat cognac factory building, which operates in one of the world’s oldest cognac distilleries.

The factory, founded in 1887, is not only the stronghold of Armenian cognac-making but also a source of national pride, as its products have gained worldwide fame. Visiting the museum is also a guided tour of the factory, providing insight into every phase of cognac production.

During the tour, the giant barrel warehouse can be viewed, where cognacs decades and even centuries old mature in oak barrels. The atmosphere here is special: aromas from wood and cognac permeate the air while the barrels stand in silent rows. Among the oldest stocks are rarities over 100 years old, which were once favorites of Winston Churchill and other world politicians.

In the museum section, old photographs, original documents, and exhibition pieces presenting the factory’s history can be seen. Particularly interesting are cognac samples from the Tsarist and Soviet periods, whose labels and bottles also represent historical value. The museum presents the traditional technology of cognac-making, grape varieties, and the science of the aging process.

At the end of the visit, there is also an opportunity for tasting, where several vintage cognacs can be sampled with expert guidance. During the tasting, the effect of different fermentation and aging methods on the flavor profile can be learned. In the museum shop, exclusive bottles can be purchased, some of which were produced in limited editions and are collector’s items.

Matenadaran

One of the world’s most significant manuscript collections is a true treasure of Armenian culture, preserving more than 17,000 manuscripts and 300,000 archival documents.

The institution, part of UNESCO World Heritage, means „book repository” in Armenian and is the repository of codices, gospels, and scientific works from the 5th-18th centuries. The building, handed over in 1959, was designed by Markar Grigoryan, and in front of its facade stands the statue of Mesrop Mashtots, creator of the Armenian alphabet.

The collection’s specialty is that it contains not only religious texts but also historical chronicles, medical treatises, mathematical works, and astronomical treatises. The oldest parchment manuscript dates from the 5th century and proves the early flourishing of Armenian literacy. Many codices are decorated with rich illuminations: gilded initials, miniature paintings, and ornamental borders adorn the pages.

The museum’s exhibition halls present manuscripts in thematic order: separate sections deal with the Bible, historical works, natural sciences, and art. The giant-sized Homilies Gospel is particularly impressive: a 13th-century parchment book weighing more than 27 kilograms requires two people for careful handling. Among the manuscripts are centuries-old medicinal plant catalogs, testifying to the advancement of Armenian medicine.

Martiros Saryan House Museum

The former home and studio of the greatest figure of Armenian painting now preserves the artist’s rich oeuvre as a museum.

Martiros Saryan (1880-1972) was the founder of Armenian modern painting, whose work spans almost the entire 20th century. The house, built according to the artist’s own plans, was home to him and his family from 1932 until his death and now preserves more than 300 paintings, graphics, and sketches.

Saryan’s style is known for its unique use of color: he painted Armenian landscapes, Mount Ararat, Yerevan’s streets, and scenes of everyday life with intense, vibrant colors. His art combines the influence of French post-impressionism with Armenian national motifs, placing special emphasis on southern light and the unique atmosphere of the Caucasian landscape.

The museum’s rooms present the artist’s creative career in chronological order: from early symbolist works to the liberated use of colors, then to the monumental landscapes of the mature period. The studio section has remained in its original state: the easel, brush set, and unfinished canvases evoke the artist’s presence. Personal items, photographs, and correspondence provide insight into Saryan’s private life and relationships with his contemporaries.

A separate room deals with Saryan’s theatrical works: set designs, costume sketches, and works created for Armenian opera and ballet art. The artist actively participated in the visual planning of Yerevan’s reconstruction, and his color theory studies influenced the city’s architectural appearance.

Armenian National Gallery

The country’s largest and most significant art collection is located on Republic Square and is the most important guardian of Armenia’s fine arts heritage.

The gallery preserves several thousand works of art that provide a comprehensive picture of the development of Armenian art. The museum building is an example of Soviet-era monumental architecture and forms a complex together with the History Museum.

It was founded in 1921 and initially had a modest collection. Over the decades, however, it continuously expanded and has now become a central institution of Armenia’s cultural life. The building’s multiple floors house the rich collection, which is presented to visitors in thematic and chronological order.

The collection includes medieval Armenian art, including valuable miniatures and manuscripts, as well as masterpieces of 19th-20th century Armenian painting. Aivazovsky’s seascapes and Saryan’s vibrantly colored works deserve special attention. The museum also preserves works by European masters, including Rubens, Tintoretto, and Doré. Contemporary Armenian art also occupies a significant place in the exhibitions.

All information can be found here!

Armenian Ethnographic Museum

This museum offers the best opportunity in the capital to learn about Armenian folk culture and traditions.

The institution provides a comprehensive picture of the daily life, customs, and crafts of the Armenian people over the centuries. The museum is particularly valuable for those who want to gain a deeper understanding of the roots of Armenian identity and the role of traditions in modern culture.

The museum was founded in 1978, although the collection contains much older materials. The institution’s goal was to document and present Armenian ethnographic heritage, with particular attention to traditions that became endangered during the 20th century. The building contains several rooms that organize the exhibition material according to different regions and periods.

The collection richly documents Armenian folk costumes, which show significant regional variations. In addition to embroidery, woven textiles, jewelry, and household items, reconstructions of traditional Armenian home interiors can also be viewed. Objects related to folk crafts deserve special attention: pottery, metalworking, carpet weaving. The museum also preserves objects related to traditional Armenian wedding and holiday customs, which provide insight into the rich world of community life.

Erebuni Museum

This museum is a must-stop for those interested in antiquity, as it presents the story of Yerevan’s founding.

The institution is located directly next to the archaeological site of Erebuni Fortress, which embodies the city’s ancient roots. The museum offers a unique opportunity to learn about the Urartian civilization, which was once the dominant power in the region.

The fortress was founded in 782 BC by Urartian King Argishti I, and the museum was opened in 1968 on the occasion of Yerevan’s 2750th anniversary. The building is located near the archaeological excavations, so after visiting the museum, visitors can directly view the ancient site itself. The purpose of establishing the institution was to present and preserve the Urartian-era finds discovered in and around the city.

During the exhibition, visitors can learn about the daily life, religious customs, and military traditions of the Urartian civilization. A special feature of the collection is the mural reconstructions that show the decoration of the former palace. Coins, jewelry, weapons, ceramic objects, and cuneiform clay tablets form the backbone of the collection. Particularly impressive is the cuneiform inscription that reports on the founding of the fortress.

Sergei Parajanov Museum

This special museum reveals a unique artistic world to visitors, presenting the life’s work of the Soviet film director and visual artist of Armenian origin.

Parajanov was one of the most original figures of the European artistic avant-garde, whose surrealist-inspired works and visually stunning films continue to inspire artists today. The museum’s atmosphere reflects the artist’s distinctive vision and poetic imagination.

The museum was opened in 1991, shortly after the artist’s death in 1990. The institution was housed in a beautiful building in traditional Armenian architectural style. During his life, Parajanov was subjected to significant persecution by Soviet authorities for his non-conformist art, so the museum is also a monument to artistic freedom.

The collection includes Parajanov’s collages, ceramics, puppets, and drawings, which he often created in prison or under house arrest with limited resources. It is a special experience to view the set designs, props, and costume designs for the director’s famous films, including materials from the iconic „Sayat Nova”. The museum’s exhibition spaces are arranged to reflect Parajanov’s aesthetic world: full of colorful, eclectic, and symbolic elements. Through personal items, correspondence, and photographs, we can also gain insight into the artist’s private life.

All information can be found here!

Megerian Carpet Museum

The institution dedicated to the art of traditional Armenian carpet weaving is simultaneously a museum, workshop, and living cultural center.

Here, visitors can not only admire the finished works but also gain insight into the millennia-old techniques of carpet making. The museum’s special feature is that it is located in a working manufactory where masters work with traditional methods, thus providing an authentic experience for those interested.

The Megerian family has been involved in carpet making for several generations, and their enterprise has become one of the most famous representatives of Armenian carpet art. The museum was guided by the preservation of family traditions and respect for carpet weaving when they created this special place in the heart of Yerevan.

In the exhibition space, more than two hundred antique and modern carpets can be viewed, including rarities that are several hundred years old. The collection showcases the characteristic patterns and colors of different Armenian regions, as well as the development of carpet making over the centuries.

One of the museum’s main attractions is the workshop, where weavers can be seen working live with the traditional hand-knotting technique. Visitors can learn about the method of producing natural dyes, preparing wool, and designing intricate patterns.

Antwerp’s largest museum opened in May 2011 in the Eilandje district, on the banks of the Scheldt River.

The building is a stunning 60-meter-high architectural masterpiece made of red sandstone and glass, which is itself a work of art. The museum’s name, „Museum by the River”, refers to its location and Antwerp’s riverine connections.

The Antwerp City Council decided to build the museum in 1998 on Hanzestedenplaats, and the first brick was laid on September 14, 2006. During the project, collections from several former museums, including the Ethnographic Museum and the Maritime Museum, were relocated to the new site. The museum presents Antwerp’s history in a global context, emphasizing the city’s role as an international trading center.

The museum’s collection counts nearly 600,000 pieces, some of which can be viewed in permanent and temporary exhibitions across five floors. The exhibitions cover diverse themes, including trade, maritime history, and Antwerp’s cultural diversity. Visitors can discover the city’s history from prehistoric times to the present day, while enjoying panoramic views of the city, port, and river from the top of the building.

The Royal Palace of Caserta (in Italian: Reggia di Caserta) is a breathtaking palace in Baroque and Rococo style located in the Campania region of Italy, in the city of Caserta, which is near Naples.

The palace is considered one of the largest and most magnificent royal residences in Europe, and is often referred to as the „Versailles of Southern Italy„. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

About the Royal Palace of Caserta

The history of the Royal Palace of Caserta

The palace was commissioned by King Charles III of Spain (who was also King of Naples and Sicily) in the mid-18th century. The king wanted the palace to compete with Europe’s largest royal residences, such as the Palace of Versailles, and to be worthy of the power and wealth of the Bourbon dynasty.

Construction began in 1752 under the direction of architect Luigi Vanvitelli, who was one of the most significant figures in Italian Baroque architecture. Although the palace was never completely finished during Vanvitelli’s lifetime, the work was continued thanks to his son, Carlo Vanvitelli.

Architecture and interior spaces

The Caserta Palace is impressive with its grandiose dimensions: 247 meters long, 5 stories high, and featuring more than 1,200 rooms, 34 staircases, and 1,742 windows. The interior is richly decorated: frescoes, statues, marble columns, and inlaid floors make the rooms exceptional.

Throne Room: The central part of the palace is the ornate Throne Room, adorned with gilded decorations, wonderful frescoes, and enormous chandeliers. This room served as the venue for royal ceremonies and receptions.

Chapel: The palace’s imposing royal chapel is reminiscent of the Versailles chapel and boasts fine Baroque decorations. Royal weddings and religious ceremonies were held here.

Theater: The palace also includes a smaller theater designed for performances by the Bourbon court. The theater has wonderful acoustics and an elegant interior.

The Palace Park and Gardens

The park of the Caserta Palace is also impressive, extending in a seemingly endless axis behind the palace, covering about 120 hectares. The garden is decorated with fountains, artificial lakes, waterfalls, and statues that harmoniously blend with the surrounding hills.

The palace’s famous English garden was commissioned by King Ferdinand III’s wife, Maria Carolina. This English-style garden is enriched with exotic plants, artificial lakes, and romantic pavilions.

One of the central elements of the palace park is the huge waterfall located at the end of a long canal. Along the water’s path, fountains depict mythological scenes, such as the story of Diana and Actaeon.

The role of the Caserta Palace in history

The palace was one of the most important residences of the Bourbon dynasty and became the venue for numerous historical events. During World War II, the building was used as headquarters by the Allied forces, and the agreement on the surrender of German forces in Italy was signed here in 1945.

It is not only a special attraction for history and architecture enthusiasts but may also be familiar to film fans. It has been the filming location for numerous famous movies; for example, some scenes from Spaceballs and Star Wars were filmed here. The palace’s grandiose spaces and classical elegance provide an excellent film set.
